Appreciating Our Blessings THIS MONTH OUR focus on both giving
thanks and senior care go hand in hand. With all of our challenges over the past years, one blessing is the lesson of the importance of family. Personally, as I get older, I appreciate more and more the strength, patience and resilience that parents need to guide their families – no matter what life brings. I now understand firsthand, being a parent myself, the sacrifices, the worry and the breadth of knowledge it takes to navigate the complexities of life. I also understand that, at some point, those roles reverse because children are often called upon to step into the caretaker role for aging parents and loved ones. On the Northshore, we are blessed with increasing resources to help seniors enjoy their silver years and for their families to assist and guide them through the process. In this issue we focus on a wide range of topics important to seniors — from senior living and medical issues to financial and legal matters. For our November cover story, we feature two women who have partnered in business to live their best lives while caring for family and community. After years of friendship, Margo Castaing Rainold and Molly Dugger Koenig are combining their individual strengths to double their service to clients and the community while their families enjoy close ties and fun times. Now with a flourishing real estate partnership, their experience and love of the area are helping others make the Northshore home, including growing families and more mature homeowners ready to downsize. No matter what stage of life we are in, we should continue to learn every day that the key to true happiness is thankfulness for what we have. My wish for all of us this Thanksgiving is to come together on things of true importance and appreciate the blessings all around us.

Premier facilities, healthcare providers and local businesses offer amenities, care and services for those with increasing needs. along with personal service for the whole family.

Bringing Senior Living Home PERISTYLE RESIDENCES
family of senior caregivers is expanding to the
Northshore in a one-of-a-kind facility. Jason Hemel and Sean Arrillaga welcomed the opportunity to bring their warm, homestyle care to the expertly-designed facility originally established as Beau Provence, giving it a new feel as The Peristyle at Beau West Assisted Living and Memory Care. Jason and Sean bring more than three decades of experience in senior living and services along with a New Orleans family environment — in contrast to the norm of operations run by large corporate entities. Hemel explains, “Along with our extensive experience, It's our mission to bring more than a well-run facility. We know it has to feel like home with local people in management and care, giving us a common bond with residents and allowing us to be more flexible than national chains. And the food has to be good to feel like home." Because environment is important to residents’ well-being, the Peristyle offers a homelike setting. With only 46 beds, Peristyle at Beau West combines expert design for memory care residents with opportunities for social interaction and enrichment. Jason explains, “It’s freestanding with porches, walking paths and lush outside spaces — breaking down barriers that memory care units housed in the interior of larger institutions have. Our residents have access to all areas, indoors and out. They socialize; attend religious services, exercise classes and concerts; and receive guests in beautiful surroundings. Jason highlights other advantages including the full-building generator reducing the need to evacuate, 24-hour nursing staff, ability for family to take residents out for excursions, and prime location in Mandeville just minutes to the Causeway. “Several physician groups affiliated with Northshore hospitals come for rounds. It’s a comfort to families that their loved ones’ physicians come to them.” Stressing the importance of experienced and caring team members, Jason adds that the new Peristyle ownership has retained excellent leaders in key positions: Milisa Hubbard, Director of Activities and Enrichment, and Alaina Hines, Director of Admissions and Community Liaison. “Alaina and Milisa are invaluable to us and the residents they care for." Making the best decision regarding care for a loved one is a journey, and the team at Peristyle understands that it can be difficult for the family. They welcome caregivers to contact them to receive information, guidance and private tours. The Peristyle at Beau West is located at 100 Beau West Drive in Mandeville. For more information or to schedule a private tour, please contact Alaina Hines at 985-778-0755, email alaina@peristylebeauwest.com or visit peristylebeauwest.com. Sophisticated Woman | November 2021

Checklist For Your Last Will & Testament WRITTEN BY BRITTANY V. CARTER, ATTORNEY AT LAW
WHERE DO YOU
begin when you start
thinking about your finances and handling your estate matters? A good place to start is to think about who you want to handle the affairs of your estate after you pass away. This person will be your Executor/ Executrix and should be someone you trust and who will work together with an attorney to ensure your last wishes are legally executed. You will also want to think about if you want to plan for and include prepaid final arrangements, whether you prefer burial or cremation and any other specific requests regarding your final resting place. Next, it is time to think carefully about what assets you want to leave to whom. In your Last Will and Testament, you have the option to leave all or part of your estate to whomever you choose. It is important to have a written Last Will and Testament in place, preferably drafted by a professional attorney, to ensure that your assets pass on to those you have chosen. A Last Will and Testament can be as specific as you would like in order to conform to your exact wishes, which may not otherwise be accomplished without creating your estate documents. Consult with an attorney who works primarily in this area of the law who can answer your estate-related questions and help guide you with your estate documents according to your specific situation. This will help eliminate possible error or dispute of the validity of your documents in a court of law to help ensure the succession process goes as smoothly as possible for your loved ones. Although estate planning can be overwhelming, once you have created your estate documents, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing you have successfully provided for your loved ones. Brittany V. Carter, Attorney at Law, LLC provides legal services regarding wills, trusts, estate planning, family law and other services. Her law firm is located at 90 Louis Prima Drive, Suite A in Covington. Doubling Their Success WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
They were destined
to meet, and their common interests and values led to family
friendships, a career partnership and an ambitious vision for the future. Molly Koenig and Margot Rainold grew up within an hour’s drive from each other in Covington and New Orleans respectively, but it wasn’t until they met while attending college out-of-state that their lives began to become intertwined. Competitiveness and a strong desire to create their own best life were two of the common threads that would bind them and their future families. Having grown up a third-generation Covington native and graduate of St. Peter School and SSA, Molly returned home after college to work in Corporate Health and Wellness and to build a family life like the one she feels fortunate to have received. “I knew Covington would be my home. My parents live nearby, and my husband Clay and I have three children, Evie, Hayes and Lola who are following the family legacy at St. Peter. While working in Corporate Wellness, I gravitated towards sales and found that I love meeting clients from different backgrounds who I can help with personalized service.” It was quarantine, says Molly, that caused her to reflect on taking her career to the next level. “It’s always been important for me to work in a way that’s best for my family. I wanted to reinvent myself and define my own success. As I watched Margot navigate her own journey, she was doing just that, and you couldn’t help but see how fulfilling and exciting it was for her.” After living in New Orleans and attending St. Martin’s in Metairie from pre-K through high school, Margot was ready to strike out and pursue her creative interests. She earned a degree in art history and ventured to Atlanta seeking a career in photography. Eventually, though, her love of family and friends brought her home to earn an additional degree in interior design in 2009. By 2014, Margot had also earned her real estate license. “I saw that the two careers could go hand in hand. With expertise in renovations and design, I could create plans that help clients visualize what a potential home could become. My relationship with vendors and contractors allowed me to not only design, but also put a price point on that vision for them.” As Margot developed her career, she also grew her family. She and husband, Zandy, now share three children – daughters Reese and Charley, and son Win. In the meantime, Margot was introduced to a company that would prove life-changing for her and eventually, also for Molly. “The McEnery Company has been an industry leader in commercial real estate on both sides of the Lake since 1980. After working for two other brokers, I knew McEnery Residential’s standards of excellence in agent support, their client centric focus, and boutique, luxury customer service were truly unique. There, my specialized expertise could be utilized to its full extent. McEnery expanded into residential real estate just three years ago and was recently voted the number one real estate company in New Orleans. With the success of the brand and my desire to move our young family here, I suggested that the company establish a Northshore office which we opened a year ago.” Molly was thrilled her good friend had moved closer to her and had found an organization that fueled her enthusiasm and drive – so much so, that Molly wanted in. “I had renovated, built and sold personally, and I enjoyed that process, but Margot’s love of the company and her vision for its growth was infectious. I was nervous to talk about partnering with her, but she was living this life of being passionate about her work while still contributing to the community and being fully involved with her family. I wanted that too, and she welcomed me with open arms.” Margot and Molly share many things. They have aggressive goals regarding the growth of their business noting that they are looking for a bigger office as they recruit agents. With the combination of real estate experience and drive, they are on track to double their sales each year over. When asked about their ambitious nature, both cite a love of competition starting with multiple school sports and Molly Dugger Koenig and Margot Castaing Rainold – continued on page 24 Sophisticated SophisticatedWoman Woman| |November November2021 2021 23 23

continuing today with Molly completing Iron Man Triathlons and Margot taking first place in tennis tournaments such as the recent Aces for Autism for which McEnery Residential was the title sponsor. Empowered by McEnery Residential’s company philosophy and support from company leadership, both Molly and Margot appreciate opportunities to support the community, from running a Kids Join the Fight lemonade stand and Hurricane Ida relief efforts in Terrebone and Lafourche Parish, to what is becoming a lifelong commitment to Hogs for the Cause. Each aspect of Molly and Margot’s life and work are unified under their overriding goal – both are huge believers in creating the life they want and passing that example down to their children. Molly explains, “Work, play and community aren’t separate things. Life happens all at once. The kids came with us to pick up our signs before the winds of Ida began. They love seeing us work and helping when they can. Margot’s house has a generator, so we sheltered there while the kids played together. Our youngest ones, Evie and Win, love each other – we’ve already started planning their wedding.” Margot adds, “And along with both families grilling, playing and going to the gym together, it’s important that they see us working hard too. Winning isn’t easy. It takes hard work and dedication to get what you want, but that’s also where the satisfaction comes in. Knowing you delivered a superior service and developed a real relationship with a client is a valuable personal reward. The kids definitely pick up on Mom’s mood, and being personally fulfilled makes being truly present with them much easier.” Molly agrees. “If you’re not competitive, this is not the career for you. Our husbands have become great friends and understand that they may need to tag team watching six kids while we tend to clients, even when we’re on vacation together. But if you enjoy what you’re doing and who you’re doing it with, it feels more like an adventure than work.” Communication, they both say, is the key to their ability to share so many aspects of their lives together. It also helps that each one brings their own strengths to the team. “I’m the morning and people person, more focused on the big picture, the next market trend and business development,” says Molly. “Margot has so much experience and is very detailed. She doesn’t miss a thing and isn’t afraid to be tough while representing the best interests of our clients.” “We’re a strong team,” Margot concurs. “Even with our different styles, people get our names mixed up, so we made the company name easy – just remember M&M Residential. We love going above and beyond for our clients who become so much more than that. Even if you don’t think it’s our job, ask us anyway. We have the connections to get things done and the determination to deliver in a uniquely qualified and personalized way. We’re here to win for our customers, our families and ourselves.” McEnery Residential Northshore is located at 170 Moores Road in Mandeville. Help Feed A Homeless Animal For Thanksgiving WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
THANKSGIVING IS A time for us to set aside our worries and take a moment to be grateful for all that we have. Regardless of what life throws our way, many of us are lucky enough to have food, water, shelter and the familiar comforts of our daily lives. When you and your loved ones gather together this year to eat and give thanks, please take a moment to remember the many animals in our community that are not so fortunate. Northshore Humane Society is saving more homeless dogs and cats than ever before. The cost to provide food, proper medical care, housing and supplies for all of our animals has a significant impact on our nonprofit shelter. In addition, we are a non-governmental organization that does not receive any tax funding, making your generosity critical to the animals in our care this upcoming holiday season. On average, it costs $13.90 to feed a homeless animal for a month. While seemingly insignificant, with nearly 250 animals under our care at our adoption facility and in foster homes, your

contribution of any size makes a true difference. This holiday season, we need your support! Please consider joining our cause and give back to those less fortunate than yourself. Together we can make Thanksgiving special for an innocent animal in need! To donate, please visit northshorehumane.org or mail a check directly to NHS at 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Is It Muscle Soreness Or An Injury? WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT
FOLLOWING HURRICANE IDA, many of us are out cleaning our yards and repairing our homes. It is common for our bodies to feel sore after a day of doing these activities, especially if we have been relatively inactive for a while. But how do we tell the difference between normal soreness and an injury? Soreness in our muscles and joints happens to everyone. Whether you are exercising for the first time or go outside to pull some weeds in the spring, our bodies will respond to this by feeling some aches and pains. It is believed that small, microscopic damage is occurring in our muscles that cause this soreness. Our bodies naturally heal this damage without any lingering issues. A little bit of ice and rest is usually all you need for your pain to go away. There are a few things to look for that will determine if the new ache or pain you are feeling is muscle soreness or a new injury: 1. Did you feel or hear anything specific that caused you pain? 2. Is there any bruising or swelling around the site of soreness? 3. Is this a common site for you to get sore? 4. Has the pain lasted longer than three to five days. If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is more likely that you have caused an injury in your body or perhaps reaggravated a previous condition. This injury may have caused more extensive damage that may or may not heal properly. A comprehensive physical therapy evaluation can help to determine the severity of your injury and help you heal appropriately and as quickly as possible.

$ophisticated Women Plan for Retirement WRITTEN BY AMANDA G. VILLEMARETTE, MS
WHEN IT COMES
to saving for retirement,
we are aware that sooner is better. If you don’t believe me, spend a few moments with an online compound interest calculator and prepare to sulk if you did not take advantage of this magic money multiplier sooner. If the thought of retirement investment jargon such as “Social Security, Pension, 401k/403b/457/TSP, IRA (Roth, Traditional, Spousal, SEP), Nonqualified, Annuity,

Cash-Value Life Insurance, and Real Estate” causes your head to spin and sends you running in the opposite direction, you are not alone! According to a 2020 Federal Reserve report, 25% of Americans

You’ve heard it here before: Define your goals, set the plan and stay the course. Rinse and repeat. The goal is to make your money last without sacrificing your lifestyle and dreams once your salary comes to an end. Do you and your husband want to retire early? Travel the world? Do you dream of simply having time to enjoy life’s little gifts and make memories with children and grandchildren? Or maybe you adore your career, and you intend to work as long as possible. Your wish might be for your business to survive you and to pass on your earnings to your loved ones or a favorite charity. Depending on your desires and time frame, each person’s plan for retirement may look entirely different. But ultimately, we ALL want and need to plan for a financially secure retirement.
result of these species that are closely related and have interbred only with each other. Louisiana irises are dormant in August and September and begin growing October through the end of May. Rhizomes can be planted in November.
GROWING TIPS • Locate away from large trees or plants with extensive root systems. • Blooming occurs March through May with optimal blooms occurring in areas receiving six or more hours of sun with afternoon shade. • Place near water sources to maintain damp conditions if September-April rainfall is inadequate. Water weekly during dry spells.
RAISED OR GROUND-LEVEL BEDS • Remove unwanted vegetation and turn soil by a depth of eight inches. Amend sandy soils with four inches of organic matter. Improve clay soil by adding two to four inches of organic matter. • Place rhizomes one to two inches below soil level and 12-18 inches apart. • Mulch two to four inches deep. Pine straw is best for air flow, sun shade, feeding the soil, and permeability during rain/watering. • Fertilize lightly in February with no nitrogen such as a 0-20-20 ratio. Use an all-purpose fertilizer such as Osmocote, 8-8-8 or 13-13-13 in October.

• Use an 18-inch diameter by minimum eight inches deep container filled with soil. • Place the rhizome just below the soil surface with at least four inches of foliage extended above the water surface. • Water keeps rhizomes hydrated and protected from the sun. No mulch necessary. • Fertilize with aquatic tablets placed under the pot during growing periods. Irises are a symbol of faith, hope and wisdom. Sometimes they are given to those who may need uplifting and support. Consider Louisiana irises now for spring color. Happy Gardening! Sophisticated Woman | November 2021 33
