Kelly Burkenstock,MD

DR. BURKENSTOCK'S SKIN • BODY • HEALTH

At the South’s hallmark Anti-Aging Institute, Dr. Kelly Burkenstock uses traditional and alternative medical disciplines to provide an exceptional healthcare experience. She also studies with international anti-aging luminaries to bring back cutting-edge European procedures and treatment protocols.

Extensively trained in both Eastern and Western techniques, and with a fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, she offers a host of services including bio-identical hormones, DNA science-based weight loss program, hair restoration, Botox®, fillers, custom designed supplement regimens and so much more. She confidently and warmly shares her wisdom about health and skin care to help all her clients achieve beautiful skin and fabulous health for life.

"I AM PROUD to announce that my son, Dr. Austin Burkenstock, is joining my SKIN • BODY • HEALTH practice. He brings a focus on preventative internal medicine that will allow us to expand our anti-aging and holistic offerings even more. I am particularly excited about bringing the success we have had with my DNA weight loss program."

Dr. Burkenstock explains that with a simple mouth swab, she can generate a custom DNA report allowing her to determine a patient’s unique mix of protein, carbs and fat along with the optimal exercise parameters their body needs to burn fat most efficiently.

She also evaluates DNA brain genes related to cravings, sugar mutations and other factors to recommend diet and supplements that address genetic weaknesses and maximize results. "Along with this weight loss breakthrough, I am going to Paris this year to further research exciting new beauty trends because Europe leads the curve. In Europe, they are 10 years ahead of us in anti-aging, skin and hormone innovation."

Another key factor in anti-aging, says Dr. Burkenstock, is the correct use of bio-identical hormones. "Through my experience, I’ve learned the best and most natural hormones to combat middle-age menopause and low testosterone in males. A custom daily hormone cream helps avoid the peaks and valleys experienced with other forms of treatment. My custom compounded hormone creams for women and men provide the best results with the least amount of product – often less than a pea-sized drop. Libido, vitality, orgasms, stamina and energy are all improved."

Dr. Burkenstock understands that every client is unique and wants the best treatment for his or her body type and goal. She consults with her clients on an individual basis to develop the therapies that will benefit them the most. "When I say, ‘You Are So Worth It!™’ I really mean it. Everything I do shows that my clients deserve the very best."

TREATING PATIENTS WITH CARE & COMPASSION

"THROUGHOUT MY TRAINING, I saw firsthand how internal medicine can treat a wide range of conditions, allowing the physician to treat patients throughout their life span. I chose this specialty to allow me to develop long-term relationships with patients to make sure they remain healthy. In addition, I enjoy the acuity of seeing patients in the hospital should the need arise. Providing treatment in both the hospital and clinic settings further cements our relationship and affords me an even more thorough understanding of their health journey and how to best treat them."

By keeping up to date on the latest medical literature and techniques, and actively training medical residents at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Dr. Burkenstock is especially suited to treat a wide variety of conditions with cuttingedge knowledge and experience. "As residents rotate through my specialty area, I teach quality patient care including compassion, caring for the sick and dying, and the treatment of acute medical conditions." A particular passion of Dr. Burkenstock’s, evidenced by his ongoing, specialized training, is treating metabolic syndrome, where he has experienced great success with treating high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. With a preventative philosophy, he believes in testing and treating small deficiencies before thay become long-lasting problems.

Dr. Burkenstock will rotate between the New Orleans and Mandeville practice locations and will enjoy seeing many new patients, being able to spend more time with each one. “I’ll offer readily available and convenient appointments, especially for acute visits, which is important with the upcoming cold and flu season and ongoing Covid concerns. Telemedicine appointments will also be available. There is a perception that doctors want to move on to the next patient as quickly as possible at the expense of the patient. I’m committed to treating our patients and clients like family - with a smile and concern for the whole person rather than just seeing them as their condition."

Dr. Burkenstock has lived in Mandeville since 2006, moving from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. “I fell in love with the community and wanted to return here to provide primary care in the city where I grew up, and the place I now call home."

DR. BURKENSTOCK'S SKIN • BODY • HEALTH

Dr. Austin Burkenstock will soon join Dr. Burkenstock’s SKIN • BODY • HEALTH practice!

Dr. Burkenstock is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician specializing in treating adults 18 years and older for a broad range of issues, including high blood pressure, thyroid conditions, obesity, diabetes and asthma. He also focuses on anti-aging and preventative care, as well as lifestyle changes.

As an internal medicine doctor, Dr. Burkenstock can also prescribe preventative medicines to ensure that patients and clients enjoy maximum health and vitality. Ashley Mentel: Sharing the American Dream

IN SHARING THEIR inspirational stories, many women who’ve found purpose and passion in life reveal their driving force is a strong female figure. Sometimes it’s a teacher, mentor or mother, but in many cases, it’s a grandmother. Despite the generational gap, which brings changes in societal norms, gender roles, world views and technology; the influence and connection shared can be surprisingly strong. The adage, ‘The more things change, the more they stay the same,’ comes to mind as Ashley Mentel, a young Latina entrepreneur, describes the unique, almost mystical bond she shares with her grandmother, Carmen. “We may come from different backgrounds, but we are connected by the lineage of our ancestors,” begins Ashley, who aspires to emulate her Salvadoran abuelita (grandmother). “The world is different in many ways, but what hasn’t changed is the importance of selfless love of family. I want her sacrifices, heritage and faith to live through me. As a child, I was

fascinated with her stories of life in El Salvador and the obstacles she faced as a working immigrant woman alone in California, unable to speak English. Like many other Latinos, her motivation was providing a better life for her family. She left her home and children to follow the American Dream, paving the way to a better future for us. No matter how great the hardships, the loneliness and the discrimination, her dedication to family overruled all. Without her courage, I wouldn’t be here.”

Ashley chose her studies of language, culture and psychology at Southeastern to further understand and carry on the familial and spiritual work of Carmen. Describing their relationship as the strongest intuitive connection she’s ever felt, Ashley traveled to El Salvador to personally research their ancestors, the Nahuat Pipil. There, she learned more about the little-known indigenous tribe all but annihilated during political and racial upheaval in 1932. As she better understood her grandmother’s stories of shame and fear as an oppressed, darkskinned child, Ashley’s admiration for

Carmen’s incredible spirit only grew. “Along with a strong Catholic faith, she maintained and shared with me the sacred oral tradition of her indigenous religion - the mystical beliefs that life, although incredibly difficult, could also be magical. It’s in my blood to act as her kindred spirit and share that hope for a better life with her people – my people, by helping them experience the advantages that she worked so tirelessly to give me.”

LA Tribu 985

PART OF ASHLEY MENTEL'S mission to serve Latino immigrants is to help integrate them into this area’s English-speaking population, reinforcing their self-worth and importance to the community. She explains, “My company, LA Tribu 985, is more than a translation service. It’s a solution to language and cultural barriers for Latinos living here. My research has found that the Latino population is the second largest minority group in the US with Spanish being the second most spoken language here. There are now over 322,500 Hispanic Louisianians. As for St. Tammany, expansion from surrounding parishes is due to environmental issues like natural disasters and the search for higher flood zones; people escaping crime and poverty; and people seeking better education systems and living standards. These factors make it a ‘key migrant destination’ forecasted for significantly larger populations. My service not only provides translators and English classes, but also recognizes the value of the Latino community and provides the support system and the tools to become properly integrated into their new community successfully.”

members to develop and use their voice to not just chase, but to fully live their American Dream. “As many Latinos can attest, the language barrier is still the number one obstacle that makes surviving here alone most challenging and discouraging. My grandmother’s sacrifices made a better life for my family and me. When I put myself in her shoes, I can barely imagine the courage needed to be alone in a country with no family or resources, unable to speak its complicated language. I provide many services to help break down barriers and connect Latinos to their new communities to achieve success including educational and financial resources, and knowledgeable guidance in navigating their new community. I am beyond passionate about what I do.”

Ashley also acts like a family member for those who’ve left theirs behind. Like a tribe, she says, LA Tribu 985 is dependable, provides support, and values all the tribe members. Ashley’s mission is to provide resources necessary for all For more information, please call 985-630-8487 or email latribu.324@gmail.com.

Mandy Mae Poche'

Mandy Mae Fine Art

Walking through Mandy Mae Poche’s gallery in Ponchatoula, it’s easy to assume each room displays the work of a different artist, but Mandy expresses herself through different styles, color palettes and subject matter. Louisiana themes dance on canvases from large to small. Figurative works in lively colors hang near impressionistic ones that whisper in muted tones.

Reflecting her credo and original studio name, Follow Your Art, Mandy says her trajectory as an artist is the result of following her heart, rather than the well-meaning advice of other artists. “I’ve broken just about every rule I was advised to follow, but I can’t take this leap of faith without being true to myself. I was told to choose just one style, and that making mass-produced prints and selling online was the only way to make it financially. My different approaches reflect how I’m feeling or what’s going on around me at different times. I can’t express all that in one style or color scheme. We do make prints for special occasions, but I’m most satisfied when painting one-of-a-kind pieces that create a unique connection with the buyer. To me, that special connection is best made at the gallery where they can see it, feel it, and understand me - not through an online transaction.”

ENTERPRISING WOMAN

Follow Your Art

M andy and her husband, Josh, met at church, and although their first date was an art walk, Josh didn’t yet know of Mandy’s secret calling. While working at a hospital to provide for her family, Mandy prayed to find an alternative to her “less than fulfilling” job while painting only as a personal outlet. Early in the relationship, Mandy offered to paint pieces for Josh’s new home. “I insisted she not go to the trouble because I was afraid I wouldn’t like them,” says Josh. “She did it anyway, and when I saw them, I was in awe. They were beautiful, and I realized she was a true artist.” Of her muse, business partner and husband, Mandy says, “He’s always challenging me to reach my potential and the reason this all happened.”

With her father’s words echoing in her head, “Don’t pursue art, you’ll always struggle,” Mandy needed Josh’s intervention to see painting as a viable livelihood. After signing her up for Ponchatoula’s Art and Wine Stroll without her knowledge with just a month to prepare, Josh’s faith in her overshadowed her fear. Once committed, Mandy created more than 50 small pieces, sold nearly everything at the event, and got dozens of orders from enthusiastic, new fans. Not realizing Covid would soon hit, Josh encouraged her to quit her job. “Follow your dream,” he said. “We’ll figure it out.” Mandy prayed and found faith in God, Josh and herself.

Lockdowns, devastating storms and studio location changes didn’t damper the couple’s spirits or Mandy’s growing popularity. After outgrowing her first retail space, Mandy considered leaving Ponchatoula on the advice of others, but her heart’s vision materialized when a space on West Pine became available for Follow Your Art Gallery. When that building sustained severe damage during Hurricane Ida, Mandy’s response was to paint an inspirational “Louisiana Strong” message on the gallery window by generator light, in between stacking and protecting her artworks with tarps. In the aftermath and cleanup surrounding the gallery, the couple saw a community in need of care and food. Even though all they could offer was Mandy’s messages of hope and hotdogs, lines grew, with their battered storefront becoming a rallying place for rebuilding. “We served thousands of meals with money raised from the sale of storm-related artwork. That’s when you realize art can make a difference in the world,” muses Mandy. “My Dad has passed, but I think he’d be proud I chose this life.”

When the search for a new gallery began, the Troxclair family offered unused space in their building across the street from Follow Your Art. Capitalizing on the new start, Mandy rebranded herself as Mandy Mae Fine Art based on her increasing popularity, commissions for largescale pieces, and the layout of her newfound space. “We now have individual rooms so I can display my art in collections rather than just the open space I had before. I can show my various styles in a way that makes sense and draws a diverse audience – which I love. My most popular pieces are displayed in The Church Room. I was always drawn to churches and inspired to paint them, along with old houses and barns, in an abstract style, usually in pastel hues with metallic accents. They just seem to speak to people.”

Inspired day and night, Mandy paints pieces for her gallery, produces commercial and private commissions, hosts Sip & Paints, does live events including weddings, and curates her own art shows. “The next one is October 15, during Ponchatoula’s Art & Wine Stroll. The theme, ‘Affirmations,’ represents big emotions like ‘Wanted,’ ‘Brave’ and ‘Sophisticated’ through contemporary abstract female figures. The July theme was ‘Louisiana,’ and I sold over 80 pieces. It’s been a crazy ride and a dream come true at the same time, and I always wonder if I made the right decision. Ironically, it’s getting through the toughest times that shows me I’m right where I belong – following my art.”

Mandy Mae Fine Art is located at 128 West Pine Street in Ponchatoula. For more information, please call 985-507-4260 or visit facebook.com/@MandyMaeFineArt.

Dr. Tod Aust: Hope for the Hopeless

DR. TOD AUST is an interventional pain management physician with a passion for what others describe as hopeless causes. “Because I can take more time with patients than is the norm in many volumebased practices, I’m referred complex injury cases, long-term chronic pain cases with overlapping issues, and cases that have repeatedly eluded effective treatment – the worst of the worst.”

Aust advocates ‘Pain Relief without Pain Pills’ saying, “It’s of utmost importance to educate patients that pills aren’t the answer. Opioids can’t heal an injury or cure arthritis, and any initial relief is often short-lived when their tolerance builds up. My job is to listen and ensure them that this is a long-term partnership where if they won’t quit, I won’t quit. The physical exam and patient interaction are key - not just looking at an MRI.”

Aust says that difficult cases often involve several pathologic processes causing overlapping pain in one area. This is challenging because treatment of one problem does not relieve the pain from the others, so the pain remains if only one source of overlapping pain is treated. A plan must be made for each problem, and the patient must understand the processes causing overlapping pain.

“By partnering with patients in their care rather than dictating treatment based on imaging alone, 95% of our patients achieve improvement. I’m proud of our dedicated team and the compassion they extend to patients who are desperate for relief, and we are honored to contribute to research making real advancements in the field.

Dr. Aust Interventional Pain is located at 740 Gause Boulevard in Slidell. For more information, contact 985-377-1884 or visit austpain.com.

Help for Sciatic Nerve Pain

WHETHER YOU HAVE it or know someone who does, sciatica can truly be a pain in the butt and often down the legs. This is because your pain is traveling along the sciatic nerve. When this nerve gets irritated, it causes the condition known as sciatica, and unfortunately, there is no magic cure for it.

The sciatic nerve can get pinched in a few different ways: one is in the lower back where the nerves come out of the spine, another is in the buttock as it passes through some of the muscles. The treatment for each can be very different. There are some things that you can do to ease your pain regardless of the cause.

1. Drink plenty of water. The discs in your lower back are made up primarily of water and will shrink when dehydrated. Your muscles will also get stiff when dehydrated. So put down the soft drink and pick up a bottle of water.

2. Avoid sitting for prolonged periods. Our spines are not made to sit all day. They get compressed, which can eventually cause pinching of the nerves. Your sciatic nerve also runs right down the buttocks right next to your sit bone and can get irritated by prolonged sitting. So set a timer, and every 30-60 minutes get up and move.

3. Exercise daily. This does not mean that you need to become a gym rat. Simply walking for 45 minutes per day can help to keep your body healthier, your muscles looser, and your spine stronger.

4. Consult a Physical Therapist. Physical therapists are the experts on non-surgical treatment of the muscles, spine, nerves, and joints. We can put together a program for you that specifically addresses the cause of your sciatica. Studies show that 93% of patients that go to physical therapy discharge with a successful outcome! If you're suffering from sciatica, reach out and get the help that you need.

Billy Beaudreau is a board certified, fellowship trained physical therapist with Comprehensive Physical Therapy located at 5404 Highway 22, Suite 200 in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-272-1017 or visit cptnola.com

Colorful Blooms for the Holiday Season

WHY WAIT FOR spring when you can have bright, colorful blooms for the holidays? Growing amaryllis indoors is simple – just follow these few steps:

1. Select the biggest and best-looking bulbs that are free of cuts, bruises and insect holes. Small bulbs will be more economical but do not produce as well. You can take advantage of local nurseries/garden centers, although online mail-ordering offers the most varieties. Bulbs will be dormant. Planting indoors now should produce blooms in six to eight weeks. Count backwards from the desired bloom time..

2. Amaryllis have very large, top-heavy blooms. Clay pots provide the most stability. Choose ones that are six to eight inches wide and allow at least one inch clearance between the bulb and the pot rim.

3. Plant in well-draining potting soil, positioning the bulb neck above the soil surface. Soil from the garden/outdoors holds too much moisture for indoor growth media. Bulbs inherently have all the ‘food’ they need. No need to fertilize. Top the soil with moss or small pebbles for a finishing touch.

4. Position the pot in a sunny window receiving indirect light and maintain evenlymoist soil. Drip trays protect table/counter surfaces. Rotate the pot by one half every few days after a stalk has emerged to develop straight growth. Large blooms will appear at the end of the bloom stalk. If necessary, use a small wire or wooden support, similar to ones used for orchids, found at most nurseries. Secure stalk with pretty raffia or simple jute twine

5. Strap-shaped leaves appear from the top of the bulb after the bloom stalk has emerged. Flowers can be left on the plant or cut to make an attractive display when combined with other seasonal flowers and greenery. Cut flowers can last up to two weeks by trimming stalks a few inches above the bulb. All leaves remain attached to the bulb as it stores energy for next year’s blooms.

6. Keep the plant indoors, watering when the soil feels dry, in the same sunny location but out of direct light. In April, transplant to a well-drained location in the garden outside for a spring display the following year. HAPPY GROWING!

Simply Satisfying Staycation

Log House

NEARBY, A HIDDEN treasure transports guests to a seemingly different place and time to rediscover the art of communing with nature. Bolo Creek Cabins offers acres of private wilderness traversed by a babbling creek and teeming with sights and sounds of the swamp.

For those with bucket lists including bass fishing, stargazing from a secluded cabin, hiking wooded trails seeking wildlife, and listening to the symphony of frogs after rain, Charles Lee and Denise Dorsey offer their personal piece of paradise. Their two cabins on over 100 wild acres right outside Picayune, MS are available for a staycation, romantic get-away or adventure with the kids. “It feels like you’re in a great wilderness,” says Denise, “but you’re only about 10 minutes from WalMart.” Adds Charles, “And it’s under an hour from the Northshore. We fell in love with this land and built the first cabin, The Log House, in 2000 and then added The Birdhouse in 2010. With each visit, we discover something new. It’s always an adventure combined with the peace and relaxation nature offers without the crowds and noise of campgrounds.” Charles notes, “The Birdhouse is built right on the creek and the Log House is just a short walk to water, but you can’t see one cabin from the other. Even if both are rented, you still feel you have the place to yourself. We also own the property across the creek, so you just see woods – no neighbors. And because there’s no ambient light, the view of the night sky is extraordinary.”

Denise and Charles say they can’t wait to bring their grandsons to see the magic that happens at Bolo Creek Cabins, named for their location on the Hobolochitto Creek. “It’s the simple

things we did as kids that we want to share with them and other families,” says Denise as Charles reflects on favorite guest memories. “Beyond building fires and making s’mores, a Girl Scout leader asked me for a unique troop adventure here. I suggested a night hike where the scouts would point their flashlights at tree roots to look for green diamonds, which are actually the glow of spider eyes. Afterwards she reported that the spider hunt was the trip’s highlight. Another guest’s small son excitedly pulled on his dad's pants leg, pointed across the creek and asked who had turned on the Christmas lights. The dad was delighted to explain it was scores of fireflies twinkling nearby.”

Charles continues, telling of a knitting group that visits regularly for camaraderie that can only be achieved away from modern day distractions. He affectionately calls another repeat group The Rollercoasters, whose preferred activity is sitting on the creek’s beach with a stocked ice chest.

“I’d stop the tractor and just listen as the low rumble of conversation would burst into screams of laughter over and

over like a thrill ride." The couple also eagerly recounts their care in building the raised cabins that feature a panoramic view of lush surroundings through walls of windows, porches and decks. Describing favorite activities, Denise adds, “Each visit is different based on the season, the creek height and whether we want to relax or explore.” They are equally enthusiastic about water sports like tubing and toy boat races with the kids; a sighting of migrating Indigo Buntings and other wildlife in the cypress swamp affectionately called The Dee’s Knee’s; playing rainy-day games on the concrete under the cabins; or simply finding “just the right piece” of driftwood on their morning hike. No matter the season or the activity, they agree, Bolo Creek Cabins are the perfect place to decompress and rediscover the power of nature to rejuvenate the body and the soul.

CANDY MARTIN

WE GOTTA FACE the music! There's a sound we don't want to hear - the sound of the envelope opening. What am I referring to? The avoidance of opening bills and notices. One of the side effects of financial illiteracy is the reality of financial irresponsibility that is a result of not learning about finances and HOW MONEY WORKS.  This is not an indictment - just an awareness. Financial literacy is not taught in most schools, nor is it the topic of most family dinner conversations. These reasons would seemingly give someone a financial illiteracy hall pass, but the world doesn’t work that way.

We, the AK Legacy Foundation's Women-NBusiness Non-Profit Organization, are here to do our part! We are aware that an estimated 44% of women do not have an emergency savings account. We have launched a "One Book-At-A-Time" Drive in an effort to irradicate financial illiteracy and provide financial education and business development in the form of free books, webinars and live events. This is possible by donations from the kindness of strangers, commitments from our WNB VIP Exclusive Memberships and our annual fundraising business conference.
