Margaret S. Burns, Esq. PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY
AT A GLANCE • Juris Doctor Southern University Law Center • B.A. - College of Charleston, SC • Personal Injury, Family Law, Criminal Law • Louisiana State Bar Association Louisiana Association for Justice 22nd JDC Bar Association Junior League of Greater Covington • Person Most Admired: Oprah Winfrey • Hometown: Monroe, LA • Favorite Book: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee • Favorite Quote: “If you look at what you have in life, you'll always have more. If you look at what you don't have in life, you'll never have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
YEP. I’M ONE of “those” attorneys. I get that response sometimes from people when I tell them what it is I do for a living. I always reply with a question, “Have you ever been in an auto accident?” The answer is always a resounding, “no.” People’s worldviews are limited, in main part, by their experiences. If a person hasn’t been through the deeply traumatic experience of being involved in a serious auto accident with serious injuries, they just don’t understand why we truly need “those” attorneys. They don’t understand what it’s like to miss work, or lose your job and not be able to provide for your family, nor do they understand what it’s like to live in intense pain day in and day out. They can't comprehend what it’s like to be unable to feel happiness and contentment in your life, because all you can worry about is the next huge hospital bill that’s coming in. And they especially don’t understand what it’s like to do all of this without a knowledgeable, aggressive personal injury attorney. I could write a book describing the truly insidious tricks and tactics car insurance companies employ to protect their money. That is their one, true goal. I know this because I used to be an insurance claims adjuster. Also, I know what it’s like to be defrauded and duped by these companies after suffering through a really serious auto accident in college. It happened to me and it changed my life. I didn’t think I needed an attorney. And now, I don’t want it to happen to you. So, yes–I am one of “those” attorneys and very proudly so.

THE LAW HAS been my life’s passion — not because of what the law is, but the liberty the
law gives. The law’s capacity to educate, enrich and empower its citizens inspires me to do more, help more and be more. I have been an attorney for over 20 years. In the beginning of my legal career, I practiced out of my home office in Ponchatoula. I hung my own shingle as the sole practitioner of Erica D. Williams, Attorney at Law, LLC in Downtown Hammond and continue to practice here. Primarily, I focus on the areas of family law, personal injury, civil litigation, juvenile law and workers' compensation. In addition, I have devoted my career to public service. I understand the importance of helping individuals and families who cannot afford to retain legal representation. As such, I purposefully dedicate pro bono hours to both adults and minors who need help in matters pending in Family and Juvenile Court. In District Court, I provide legal representation though the Office of the Public Defender to the indigent who cannot afford to hire private counsel. Professionally, my number one goal is to instill confidence in my clients. Even though they may be enduring some of the toughest times in their lives, through my representation, they have someone on their side to ensure that their legal issues will be resolved in an efficient, fair and compassionate manner.

Dancing On The Waves of Hope HOW MANY TIMES can one person get knocked down and get up again before "I've had enough!" is their final decree? Gina Pausina Cherry continues to get knocked down with unthinkable hardships that no one ever wants to endure, but she is determined to conquer that wave no matter how many times it hits her. From being diagnosed with stage II breast cancer with the BRCA gene in June 2017 – only 5 months before her wedding date – to losing her first son, Joey, age 21, in a fatal car accident on December 26, 2018, and then losing her father and her rock, Stanley Pausina, in January 2021 to COVID, the knockdowns keep coming. Although she has faced much heartache and loss, she continues to find meaning and purpose behind all that she has endured. In 2017, after her breast cancer diagnosis, she felt that she was being called to make sense of everything she had gone through during treatment including the physical and emotional changes that were taking place. She thought about what talents God gave her and her ultimate driving force for life that she could share with others. Shortly after she had finally decided to make the most of her illness, she tragically lost her son. "The loss of your child is like your heart being ripped out of your chest. A piece of me was missing. The spark or flame I had for life was extinguished, and I didn’t know when or if it would ever come back. My Dad would have me meet him once a week for lunch just to make sure I was up, dressed and getting out of the house. Time will never heal this type of loss. You just figure out how to navigate the waters and keep swimming forward without drowning." As time passed and the year 2020 came, Gina’s need to use her creative energy were even more intense than before. Now, it was not only her drive from surviving cancer, but also the profound loss of her son leading her to find meaning. After much soul searching, she formed an 22 Sophisticated Woman | October 2021
women's care month idea that would help others while helping herself by creating something she loved. It would be her saving grace. Dance had always been a part of her life and she was ready to share that healing gift. She would create a dance team for women diagnosed with cancer and undergoing the wretched therapies of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. From Gina’s early days of dance beginning at age five to being a member/officer of the Mt. Carmel Academy Carmelettes, and then being selected as a member and staff of the American All-Star Dance Team, she has performed, judged, coached and formed new dance teams as well as directed junior high and high school dance teams for over 35 years. Also, as a certified group fitness instructor, she has been teaching group fitness at Franco’s Athletic Club for 11 years and has been in the industry over 20 years. Even with all of the challenges her community has faced in the past two years, Gina feels that now the time is right and that the first cancer dance team for women, the Bionic Babes, Dancers of Hope, will be the new talk of the town. Gina’s mission for the Bionic Babes is to provide an outlet of exercise for women that have dealt with cancer and to develop camaraderie with others who understand the emotional and physical changes of a woman’s body during treatment. “It’s my goal for the ladies to have fun together in order to help the body as well as the mind. The team will participate in parades, festivals, recitals and other community events.” One of the loftiest goals for Gina is to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “It’s at the top of my bucket list of things to do in life. I started having my husband reserve his vacation time to take off the week of Thanksgiving because I keep telling him, 'One year soon, we’re going.’” Gina's sense of faith, determination and perseverance has always been her strong suit. She says she is most thankful to her husband, Ben Guillory, for encouraging her to make her dream a reality for the Bionic Babes. Two other wonderful ladies and friends that so generously offered to support and help her, Jannie Gavrin Markey (featured in photos), and Sue Ellen Stewart (not pictured), have stood by Gina and waited patiently for her green light and direction of the vision she has for this dance team. Gina would also like to thank her supporters and friends in the community for embracing the Bionic Babes: Kelli Bouza Manville of Kelli’s Kreative Dance, Paige Henderson of Bellus - A Photography Boutique and Julie Naquin of JN Designs.
Bionic Babes, Dancers of Hope is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization open to women 30 years of age or over who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer and have undergone treatment, whether they are a fighter or survivor. Tough Love WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
Most people fully expect their marriages to last forever, but when love turns tough, many couples turn to the serious business of divorce. In Covington, Sheila O’Connor maintains an unconventional yet seriously effective Family Law practice. On the walls of her office’s reception area hang fierce mantras that introduce clients to her bold style. “The War Room,” “Marriage is Grand - Divorce is 100 Grand,” “Queen of Effing Everything,” and “S#*! Happens Here, Lawyer Up!” are a few of the milder messages displayed that are suitable for print. “Lawyers – especially women lawyers – get a bad rap,” says the matter-of-fact but also warmly welcoming O’Connor. “My world can be patriarchal and sexist. It’s important to show I’m capable and confident. I owe it to clients to be the toughest person in the room, and I send out that message right away.” Of her beginnings, O’Connor says she is from nowhere and everywhere, having moved frequently in her youth. However, clad in both an I♥︎NY baseball cap and T-shirt, she wears the love of her birthplace on her sleeve. “New York is my happy place. The city’s pulse calms me. Family law is mentally draining so I often escape to New York for peace and anonymity, getting lost in the whole vibe.” Attending Northwestern State University in Natchitoches was O’Connor’s introduction to Louisiana, and Loyola’s law program brought her to New Orleans. “My passion in law is the children. I worked at a law firm while going to law school at night. It was challenging, but that’s who I am,” O’Connor says, recounting her own rough childhood with a single mom. “Kids suffer collateral damage from their parents’ choices – and that’s sad.” After earning her law degree in 1993, O’Connor continued to work on the Southshore until 1998 when she opened her own practice in Covington. With the wherewithal to practice in higher profile cities, she explains her choice of the Northshore. “I moved here a year after graduating and commuted to work. I fell in love with St. Tammany and decided to stay for the great family atmosphere it offered my children.” From practicing by herself in a tiny space, O’Connor’s reputation and success quickly spurred on growth to a fully staffed operation. “I’m known for being aggressive when I need to be, and also bluntly honest. I think that sets me apart. I won’t take a case I’m not passionate about.” But her tough side is tempered by compassion. “As a woman, I’m maternal, in touch with feelings and altruistic - with both men and women. The law dictates 50/50 custody when feasible, and I’m on board with that. It’s important both parents stay in their children’s lives.” Embracing her own family life, O’Connor’s great joy is spending time with daughters Kendall and Kelly, who both live nearby and are married to men she describes as fantastic. “I value experiences over material things and want to instill that into my grandkids. Since I was poor growing up and never had vacations, I love to travel now. I’ll take the family skiing for Mardi Gras, to Disney, on cruises or just to the beach. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.” O’Connor also has a soft spot for another family member whom she spoils rotten and regularly brings to the office – fittingly, her English bulldog, Trump. “I love my little buddy. He always makes me smile.” On other guilty pleasures, she shares, “Who’d think that a ballbuster attorney would scrapbook, but it’s how I remember my travels. I also hate to cook, so I don’t. For escape, I’ll binge watch reality shows.” That viewing is also acting homework as O’Connor has landed roles on television and in movies. “It’s my alter ego. Since I have ‘trial attorney’ on my resume, I’m often called for roles like the one I got in New York for the Investigative Discovery Channel.” As a Certified Master Life Coach, the multi-faceted counselor exhibits more of her depth. “Part of my job is therapy, particularly dealing with the most precious part of clients’ lives – their kids. As an insider, I’m better able to represent them. My first goal is always to resolve issues cooperatively and amicably.” A former client also called on O’Connor to perform his upcoming wedding for which she became an ordained minister. Displaying her unique humor, she quips, “Yep, I can marry them out of this window and divorce them out of that one.” Despite the occasional droll comment or spicy language, O’Connor reveals that she is also spiritual person. “I’m proud of my relationship with God right now. It’s something that’s taken time to come to.” Just as tough love encompasses a mixture of seemingly opposite actions and emotions for the good of oneself or others, Sheila O’Connor has cultivated a wide range of talents and tactics that have brought her to this special time and place in her life — a place where she can do so much good for her clients and her family by being unabashedly and unapologetically her unique and authentic self. O'Connor Law Firm is located at 302 West 26th Avenue in Covington. For more information, please call 985-867-1575 or visit oconnor-law-firm.net. Bringing Senior Living Home PERISTYLE RESIDENCES family of senior caregivers is expanding to the Northshore with a refreshing concept for residential assisted living in a one-of-a-kind facility. Jason Hemel and Sean Arrillaga welcomed the opportunity to bring their warm, homestyle care to the expertly designed facility originally established as Beau Provence, giving it a new feel as The Peristyle at Beau West Assisted Living and Memory Care. Not only do Jason and Sean bring more than three decades of experience in senior living and services, but they also bring a New Orleans family environment to what has become an industry traditionally run by large corporate entities. Hemel explains the Peristyle difference. “The name is a nod to the beautiful area in City Park that holds great memories for so many New Orleanians. Along with our extensive experience, it’s our mission to bring more than a well-run institution – it has to feel like home with all the uniqueness our area brings. We do this with local people in all areas of management and care, giving us a common bond with our residents and allowing us to be more flexible than big national chains. And not the least of that is our food. It’s a real treat to get three meals a day from Chef Al Edwards who trained at Gulf Coast fine dining establishments. The food has to be good if it’s going to feel like home.” Before creating Peristyle, Arrillaga and Hemel met at the St. Margaret’s organization where Sean served as Director of Home Health and Hospice and Vice President of Operations-Western Region, participating in the development of St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Belleville Assisted Living Center in Algiers, LA. After serving in the finance department of premier non-profit nursing facilities in New Orleans, Jason became a licensed administrator and served as COO of St. Margaret’s overseeing nursing homes, an assisted living facility, a pharmacy company and a therapy company. After Katrina, as VP of Business Development, he participated in projects including St. Margaret’s at Bywater, St. Luke’s Medical Center, St. Luke’s at Belleville and St. Margaret’s at Mercy nursing home and hospital. 34 Sophisticated Woman | October 2021
business profile
Understanding the importance of their environment to residents’ well-being, the Peristyle founders’ vision focuses on facilities in homelike settings. With only 46 beds in mostly private suites with some companion suites, Peristyle at Beau West combines the best of expert design for memory care residents with opportunities for social interaction and enrichment. Jason explains, “It’s the nicest designed facility in the New Orleans region. It’s freestanding with porches, walking paths and lush outside spaces, so it breaks down the barriers of most memory care units that are housed in the interior of larger structures. Our residents have free-flowing access to all areas indoors and out – with all safety precautions, of course. They can socialize, participate in religious services, exercise classes and music concerts, and receive guests in beautiful surroundings. Jason also highlights other advantages such as the full-building generator that reduces the need to evacuate, 24-hour nursing staff, the ability for family members to take residents out for lunch and excursions, and the prime location in Mandeville just minutes to the Causeway bridge. “We have several physician groups affiliated with Northshore hospitals that come for rounds, which reduces the need for residents to go out for doctor visits. It’s a comfort to families that their loved ones’ physicians come to them. We can also provide end of life care with local hospice partners.” Stressing the importance of experienced and caring team members, Jason adds that the new Peristyle ownership appreciates the dedication of the facility’s long-term caregivers who know residents’ history, and has retained excellent leaders in key positions: Milisa Hubbard as the Director of Activities and Enrichment, and Alaina Hines as the Director of Admissions and Community Liaison. “Alaina and Milisa have grown up in their positions here and are invaluable to us and the residents they care for. We’re also pleased to add a new team member with experience managing a residential assisted living home in Covington, Lynette Walker, as Director of Operations. With our experience in senior living and memory care on the Southshore, it’s a natural progression to bring our warm, local style of operating to Northshore families looking for outstanding personal care in a home-like setting. We couldn’t be happier with this masterfully designed and inviting building, the beautiful and accessible grounds and the excellent location.” Making the best decision regarding care for a loved one is a journey, and the team at Peristyle understands that it can be difficult and stressful on the family. As a welcoming resource for information and guidance for caregivers, they invite you to call for a private tour. The Peristyle at Beau West is located at 100 Beau West Drive in Mandeville. For more information or to schedule a private tour, please contact: Alaina Hines at 985-778-0755, email: alaina@peristylebeauwest.com or visit: peristylebeauwest.com.

FOLLOWING HURRICANE IDA, many of us are out cleaning our yards and repairing our homes. It is common for our bodies to feel sore after a day of doing these activities, especially if we have been relatively inactive for a while. But how do we tell the difference between normal soreness and an injury? Soreness in our muscles and joints happens to everyone. Whether you are exercising for the first time or go outside to pull some weeds in the spring, our bodies will respond to this by feeling some aches and pains. It is believed that small, microscopic damage is occurring in our muscles that cause this soreness. Our bodies naturally heal this damage without any lingering issues. A little bit of ice and rest is usually all you need for your pain to go away. There are a few things to look for that will determine if the new ache or pain you are feeling is muscle soreness or a new injury: 1. Did you feel or hear anything specific that caused you pain? 2. Is there any bruising or swelling around the site of soreness? 3. Is this a common site for you to get sore? 4. Has the pain lasted longer than three to five days. If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is more likely that you have caused an injury in your body or perhaps reaggravated a previous condition. This injury may have caused more

Fearless Financial Planning For $ophisticated Women WRITTEN BY AMANDA G. VILLEMARETTE, MS
AS WE NAVIGATE 2021:THE SEQUEL and dive into another uncertain school year, the struggle is real for students, parents, faculty, grandparents and everyone in between. Sunlight hours are reduced in October and continue through December, but placement is still a consideration since a thin, metal container in full sun for several hours may still hold too much heat and dry out quickly. Tilt plants to extend over the container edge for a softer look as they grow. Stars Align To Share Their Gifts WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
As a kid growing up in Slidell, Greg Barnhill always knew he would be a professional songwriter and performer. He didn’t know exactly how he’d achieve this goal, but he believed. Now, Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated and living in Nashville, he regularly returns to the Northshore to share the benefit of his talent and experience with aspiring artists looking to bolster faith in themselves. So strong is his conviction to mentor, he and dedicated supporters began the Ozone Music Education Foundation and Ozone Songwriter Festival. In its third year, the festival will kick off with hit-making luminaries including rock band Journey’s Jonathan Cain and country music hitmaker Gary Baker along with Barnhill on November 5 at Old Rail Brewing Company in Mandeville. On his enthusiasm to invest and mentor in his home parish, which garnered him the 2021 St. Tammany President’s Art Award - Native Son Award, Barnhill recalls his childhood. “I started jumping on stage and singing at family weddings. With their encouragement, I felt that rush and knew music is what I was meant to do. My mother was a songwriter, and when I started writing songs and got positive response - that was it. My first big break came when Mom couldn’t make her performance at the Nashville Songwriters Association International Festival. I drove up, took her place and Warner Brothers offered to sign me as an artist and songwriter.” Even with a promising record deal, Barnhill recounts his rocky road to Nashville, living on $200 dollars a week and weathering many professional ups and downs before writing Grammy-nominated megahit “Walkaway Joe” recorded by Trisha Yearwood and Don Henley. Now, with a star-studded discography too long to recount (visit gregbarnhill.com and prepare to be impressed) and serious industry cred as a creative and performing artist, Barnhill possesses the clout and relationships to host a world-class event which he has graciously anchored in St. Tammany Parish. “It’s been my lifelong dream to have this career and an honor to share my knowledge through the festival and the foundation - not only with kids but all aspiring songwriters.” Just as Barnhill believed, the festival’s Showcase headliner, Jonathan Cain, took believing to unprecedented heights when he penned the story of his own trek to global, record-breaking success with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” Inspired by the words of encouragement his father offered during difficult times, it is described as a "perfect rock anthem," and achieved Top-10 Billboard chart position when it was released in 1981. Over the next 40 years, it has continued to set records around the world including “best-selling digital track from the 20th century” with over 7 million sold in the US alone. The song also proved its staying power with remakes by various artists including the wildly popular “Glee” version which introduced the anthem to a whole new generation. 44 Sophisticated Woman | October 2021

For aspiring songwriters seeking lofty inspiration, Cain will deliver in Ozone’s unplugged, storyteller-style Friday night Showcase event. Of his eagerness to motivate others through his story, in alignment with Barnhill’s goals, Cain talks about faith in his recent memoir – the importance of his family’s faith in him and his renewed faith in God. Reflecting on his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction he says, “A ceremony like [that] can easily be forgotten, but the music that’s been created will inspire listeners decades from now. It’s a story about patience, persistence and the pursuit of something majestic and one I’m honored to share.” To learn more about Cain’s accomplishment-heavy resume including multiple Platinum and Diamond-selling records, visit jonathancain.org. Complementing Barnhill and Cain at the Showcase will be Gary Baker. Despite a phenomenal writing career spanning over 30 years, Baker jokes, “I won’t be very entertaining between Jonathan
Greg Barnhill
and Greg.” But don’t let the humble and genial industry giant fool you. His record sales prove otherwise with his megahit “I Swear” winning the 1995 Grammy for Best Country Song and selling more than 20 million copies internationally between recordings by both All 4-One and John Michael Montgomery. Baker has also played with his songwriting partner Frank J. Myers in Marie Osmond’s band; written number one hits “I’m Already There” for Lonestar, “Once Upon a Lifetime” for Alabama and hits for The Backstreet Boys and Reba McIntyre; and boasts over 35 filmography credits on IMDb. This veteran artist is sure to share valuable insights and humorous anecdotes about his long and successful career. The 2021 Ozone Music Festival will continue on Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7 with 140 local, regional and national artists performing on four stages at and around the Mandeville Trailhead. Elevating the festivities at the free, family-friendly event will be food trucks along with soft drink and adult beverage vendors. For musicians, PreSonus will present a Home Studio Lecture and Lab on their digital audio workstations hosted by Nashville songwriter, producer and mix engineer, Greg Bieck, who has worked with notables such as John Oates, Kenny G, Destiny’s
Jonathan Cain
Child, Lionel Richie, Daryl Hall and Pavarotti. Edgar (Dino) Gankendorf, Partner-Provosty and Gankendorf, will host a seminar on legal aspects of the music business, and the Pontchartrain Film Festival will host a segment on making music videos. Festivalgoers will see and hear songwriters perform original songs in Country, Folk, Rock, Pop, Funk, Afro-Caribbean and more. It’s an opportunity to join in the dance that is the relationship between musical artists and their audience - to be touched by those baring their soul and, in return, give encouragement to those seeking faith in their work. Just as a young Greg Barnhill was cheered on by supporters, this is the chance to witness the dawn of the next bright newcomer turned superstar. Hopefully, one with the heart of Barnhill and his dedicated board and staff whose mission it is to give a high-profile performance venue to many songwriters normally limited to pouring their heart out in cafes or at open mic nights. Maybe, the festival will see the debut of a young beneficiary of the Ozone Music Education Foundation’s mentorship or free instrument program who will go on to write the next great anthem that reminds us all to Never Stop Believing. Nonna Randazzo's: A Sweet Celebration CELEBRATING with King Cake is a beloved New Orleans custom spread around the world by relocated natives longing for sweet memories, travelers reliving their revelry after returning home, and locals sharing their seasonal spirit with friends and family far away. But, one might be surprised to learn that, since Katrina, one of the most popular names in king cakes bakes and ships from the Northshore, ensuring the sweet tradition rolls on. “This September marked Nonna Randazzo’s 15th year in St. Tammany, and we’re so happy with the support this community has shown us and our ability to give that support right back,” says Joel Randazzo Forjet, daughter of founding Randazzo brother, Lawrence. “We’re also excited to unveil a new and special king cake flavor that we’ve created and named especially for St. Tammany. It’s the best way we know how to show our appreciation for everyone who welcomed us and continues to help us expand in size and offerings.” The name and flavor of the new confection are under wraps until the unveiling, when dignitaries and media get a first look and taste and anniversary cake will be given to the public at the bakery’s Covington location. The anniversary celebration will also include events centering around community and charitable endeavors. Joel and husband Felix, the head baker, along with their children and families – all involved in the business - will present Miracle League Northshore with a generous contribution, as they have for the past several years. The funds support a special field and facilities at Coquille Parks that help children of all abilities to play sports. Also, the proceeds from cookie sales will benefit the Tunnel of Towers Foundation Fallen First Responders Home Program, of which the family of Police Captain Vincent Liberto was a beneficiary. Never resting as small business owners, Joel says they’ve grown Nonna Randazzo’s into so much more than the bakery that started generations ago. “We still follow the exacting standards that were established decades ago including truly handmade desserts, but we’ve also made the Covington location an inviting place for gatherings with lunch, wine, specialty drinks, to-go items, and catering. Our daughter, Lauren, completed John Folse’s program at Nichols and is the chef for our special wine dinners which sell out very quickly. At 15, our grandson Felix IV helps with shipping and is learning the business; at 8, Jaxton already knows he wants to be a baker, and the little ones have the very important job as tasters. This is our legacy from my parents, and our family will continue to make it grow. We work hard to make sure it will endure by running a quality operation that appreciates and contributes to our community.” 46 Sophisticated Woman | October 2021
