ONE OF MY EARLIEST childhood memories was standing on a stool at the sink watching my father shave. The relationship between fathers and daughters is such a unique one and teaches us the lessons for future relationships; my father would regularly bring home flowers to my mother even after years of marriage, it taught me the kindness of men. My father is a storyteller and still surprises me with stories about his life that I had never heard before. On my last visit home to England, I learned that he witnessed Picasso draw the Dove of Peace at the World Fair. It truly amazes me what he has seen in his lifetime. Growing up, my parents ran a boy’s boarding school, so, along with my five siblings I had to share my father’s time. He made family dinners a priority, a tradition that we carry on in my home. It is so easy to get caught up in all our activities that we lose sight of what is important. The family time we spend with our children and the memories that we create will be with them forever. I watch my husband, Jerry and our son together and witness the bond that they have and know that I am truly blessed. June is the issue we meet some of the great men on the Northshore. Our Enterprising Man, Dr. Gary Agena achieves that balance with his busy practice and family life. To read his story, please go to page 18. Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathers out there and a special thank you to my father and my husband for being the fathers that they are.

Louisiana Security Freeze

WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB

DO YOU WORRY that someone may “steal your identity” or access your credit information if they obtain your social security number (SSN)? If so, there is a way to “freeze” your SSN so that no one may access your credit file without your PIN number, not even you. What this means is two things: 1) you could put your SSN on a billboard without a worry in the world, and 2) you had better protect your PIN number. Louisiana was actually one of the very first states to implement this “security freeze” law back in July of 2005. The actual law is found at La. R.S. 9:3571.1, but for a layperson, the best information can be found if you simply do an internet search (like Google) for “Louisiana Security Freeze.” What you must do is contact each credit bureau individually. The big three are the most important: 1) Experian (1-888-397-3742), 2) Equifax (1-800-685-1111), and 3) TransUnion (1-888-909-8872). However, there is a new bureau making some strides called Innovis (1-800-540-2505) that you may wish to freeze, as well.

You should be able to freeze your credit files with each bureau by mail, internet, or telephone. The fee for doing so is $10 for each bureau. However, if you are age 62 or older (or a victim of identity theft), it is free. How the freeze works is that no one may access your credit (not even you) unless you plan ahead. If anyone tries to access your SSN, it will come back as being “blocked” or “frozen.” If you know that someone will need to access your credit (to open a new account, a new credit card, or get a credit score or loan, etc...) you must “lift” the freeze for a set amount of time. The fee for this lift is $8 (or free if age 62 and over) and the lifts do not always occur immediately. For people who do not need to open new credit lines frequently, the security freeze is relatively inexpensive to implement (possibly free) and yields a lot of peace of mind.

When Is Vinegar Not Horizontal Vinegar?1/6 5.05” x 2.12”

WHEN IT IS MADE from the juice of a particular grape from the rich valleys of Northern Italy, and has aged at least 12 years in a series of wooden barrels (usually five to eight, all different woods in ever decreasing sizes), at no point allowed to ferment and has no additives of any kind. This is authentic balsamic vinegar. Without fermentation, it is not true vinegar at all. Backed by the European Union in 1979, consortia formed for grading balsamic vinegars. Aceto Balsamico Tradzionico (ABT), the true unadulterated product, must be produced in the Modena and Reggio Emilia area. The consortium watches from the grape harvest to1/2 theVertical finished product— including the shape of x the bottle. ABT is 5.05” 6.56” used by the drop, never poured, and may be sipped as the finest of liqueurs with a price tag between $50 and $500 or more. However, not all balsamic vinegar need be ABT. As with wine, the very cheapest can be used for cooking but those with discriminating tastes can select a much higher quality, vintage and taste. As always, the higher the quality, the higher the cost.

“Without fermentation, it is not true vinegar at all.” However, again like wine, there are some thoroughly acceptable balsamic vinegars within a moderate price range. A good quality balsamic is made with grape must (the juice containing the skins, seeds and stems) and red wine vinegar, aged in wooden barrels for six to eight years. The cheapest is cider vinegar with caramel, sugar and a thickener added to imitate the color, taste and viscosity of the real thing. The rest is up to your own taste buds – and your pocketbook. SKIN

IN MY DERMATOLOGY career, I have been privileged to practice first on the Northshore for 13 years, then in New Zealand for five years, and now, for the last 13 years, back home again. Sadly, I have witnessed over these years a steady increase of melanoma, the potentially lethal skin cancer. During my early years, a melanoma diagnosis often brought tears from the staff, knowing that one of our patients may lose his or her life in a relatively short period of time. Melanoma back in the 1980s was uncommon, and therefore was not recognized as potentially dangerous by patients early when treatment is typically curative. When I relocated to New Zealand, the melanoma incidences in Nelson were documented to be the highest in the world. I saw new cases of melanoma at least once a month, and, on two different occasions, diagnosed three in one day. Here in South Louisiana, my associates and I detected six new cases in April. Fortunately, most were recognized early, and an office procedure will likely eliminate them permanently.

With melanoma incidences rising, early detection is crucial. Why the drastic change from the 1980s to so many more in New Zealand and now on the Northshore? We have not only caught up with the fair-skinned South Pacific Kiwis in our affinity for the sunny outdoors, but we have also jumped into tanning beds, adding ultraviolet DNA damage at five times the rate of midday sun exposure. It is a simple, yet potentially deadly, equation. With melanoma incidences rising, early detection is crucial. Schedule an appointment for your spot check today.

Something to Smile About— Brown Family Orthodontics WRITTEN BY MARA BEEBE

ABOVE: Dr. Edward Brown, III, Dr. Jessica Brown, Dr. Edward Brown, Jr. IN BUSINESS FOR FOUR decades, Brown Family Orthodontics continually stays on top of the latest and greatest technologies available to provide a winning smile for each and every patient. As one of the first orthodontic practices in Louisiana to use self-ligating brackets and other functional appliances, their stronghold as one of the Northshore’s most trusted orthodontic practices has been by the relationships they have built through years of treating families and by providing online information and resources for their patients. Dr. Edward Brown, Jr. originally opened his practice on the south shore and grew steadily over the years. Dedicated to the belief in their five-star service to patients, two of Dr. Brown’s children, Dr. Edward Brown, III, known to patients as “Dr. Ed” and Dr. Jessica Brown, as well as Dr. Eric Macaluso, now rotate among their six networked offices in Covington, Mandeville, Metairie, Uptown, Franklinton and Ocean Springs, MS. Technology is an important element to

the business. Their easy to navigate website is an extensive portal to everything about them, their services, patient forms, free online games and the new ultimate orthodontist application, the Sorriso Ortho App for android and iPhone. This app is a reference application for orthodontists, parents and patients that has learning tools about orthodontic procedures and updates from the industry. However, what sets Brown Family Orthodontics apart is their willingness to work with clients on treatment options and their exceptional track record of treatment time. Known for completing treatment during the estimated treatment time, Brown Family Orthodontics always consults with a client, paying close attention to dental age and what option and maintenance plans will be most beneficial. Procedures can include braces, non-brace treatments, appliances and dentofacial orthopedics to correct and control the direction of teeth, or to gradually pull, expand, separate and maintain

teeth and jaw alignment. “Retainers are the pajamas for teeth— the insurance to keep your teeth straight,” states Dr. Ed. Surgical orthodontics straightens jaw irregularities and can be treated in conjunction with braces. Their overall goal is to present the best possible treatment plan for you or your child so that the final product is achieved with stunning results and improved self-confidence. “This is why during each visit we try to make a conscious effort to speak with every patient and update them about their treatment progress, hygiene or changes in the treatment plan. We are committed to keeping our patients informed and will always make time to answer their questions,” says Dr. Jessica Brown. Visit Brown Family Orthodontics— they will give you something to smile about. Eating Youthfully WRITTEN BY PAUL CIMINO

THE RENOWNED WRITER Brillat-Savarin once said, “It has been established that a succulent, delicate and careful diet delays the ravages of old age.” Proof of that might lie in the ageless beauty of Sophia Loren, who credits her diet (which includes much olive oil and spaghetti) for retaining her youthful good looks. Science tells us that wrinkles are caused by poorly nourished skin and muscles that do not have the necessary resiliency. Therefore, it would seem only reasonable to conclude that those of us who eat properly will look younger than those who do not. Italian food is extremely varied, offers something different and indeed something unusual, every day of the year. Italians have been wonderful cooks for many centuries, and in fact, it was an Italian woman who first won the coveted Cordon Bleu. However, for all good reasons, Italian cuisine is without comparison. Madonna! Ciao and Buon Appetito.

Insalata di Scampi e Funghi (Shrimp and Mushroom Appetizer) 1 lb baby portabella mushrooms ½ cup olive oil Juice of one lemon ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp minced garlic 1 lb cooked and cleaned shrimp 1 ¼ tsp salt 2 tbsp minced parsley Wash and dry the mushrooms. Remove the stems and slice the caps thinly. Add the oil, lemon juice, pepper and garlic. Marinate in the refrigerator about two hours. Thirty minutes before serving, mix in the shrimp and salt. Taste for seasoning, and sprinkle in the parsley.

SOUTHERN PAIN AND NEUROLOGICAL CONSULTANTS

І men in business

What Few Can Do— Southern Pain and Neurological Consultants WRITTEN BY MARA BEEBE PHOTO BY JULIE O’DAY

WITH MORE THAN 100 years of experience between them, Paul J. Hubbell, III, M.D., F.I.P.P., Donald E. Richardson, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Jeffrey A. Borchardt, M.D. of Southern Pain and Neurological Consultants provide relief to patients with chronic pain by targeting the source of the pain, lessening the patient’s need for Donald E. Richardson M.D., F.A.C.S. medication and reducing their Paul J. Hubbell, III, M.D., F.I.P.P. recovery time. Over 80 percent of the population suffers from lower back pain, many from disc degeneration (bone-to-bone contact at the facet joint) which usually affects the neck, back and extremities. Interventional techniques such as radiofrequency and diagnostic injections utilize small needles to target the offending nerve with either heat or numbing medication so that it cannot send pain signals to the brain. According to Dr. Hubbell, these are the “the least invasive, least risky and most cost productive procedures.”

Dr. Richardson specializes in deep brain stimulators (first developed by Dr. Richardson in 1973 to treat Parkinson’s disease) to manage conditions such as Tourette syndrome, facial pain, Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and migraines. A control device much like a pace maker is implanted in the patient and sends electrical signals to certain parts of the brain. “Implanted continuous infusion spinal pumps are utilized when other options have failed,” says Dr. Richardson. “A new technique called minimally invasive lumbar decompression (mild®) targets the thickened ligament that compresses the disc in the epidural space (spinal stenosis). Contrast is injected to assess the ligament under an x-ray and the affected area is thinned out,” states Dr. Hubbell, who has extensive training and certification for the procedure, which is less invasive than back surgery. FATHER’S DAY

І lifestyle

Simple Gifts WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED

WHY DO DADS sometimes seem to not enjoy receiving gifts? One reason is that receiving gifts is unsettling. Men typically compartmentalize their lives and manage them by keeping everything and everyone neatly in place. It is like the difference in purses and wallets. Women leave their purses all over the place but men keep their wallets tidy and close at hand. Work, family, friends and activities are organized according to plan and are pleasantly uneventful—usually. Gifts, however, for Father’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, and other events, blur the boundaries. Watch the bewildered look on your dad’s or man’s face as he receives a gift. What compartment does this belong? He will relax once he understands what the gift is or is informed, “Dad, I made it. It is a pot to hold your keys.” Connecting gifts to work helps to lessen his anxiety. A few gift suggestions for Father’s Day: Redeemable coupons for: sleeping in on a Saturday because you work hard. Complete silence for 30 minutes (or variations of 10 minute intervals), so you can think. Listening without interruption for 10 minutes about your work and only one or two questions to show my interest in what you do. A wallet size picture of the two of you. A larger photograph for his desk. A screensaver image of something connected to his hobby. Other ideas are a water bottle or a story written by you, “A Happy Day With Dad.” Ultimately, the best gift is a wish for a Happy Father’s Day!

І GARY M. AGENA, M.D.

The Family Man— One-on-One With Gary M. Agena, M.D., Obstetrics and Gynecology WRITTEN BY MARA BEEBE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

“ I treat each person with the same attention and compassion I would want extended to my own family.”

CELEBRATING THE PRACTICE’S one-year anniversary this June, Dr. Agena intentionally keeps his practice small so that he can personally connect with his patients throughout all stages of their reproductive lives. For new patients, especially for parents with daughters coming in for their first visit, he believes it is important to have a one-on-one consultation to help the patient (and parents) get to know him, express their concerns and feel at ease. This level of respect and empathy is given to every patient no matter what their needs. “Many times I will continue to assess a patient’s situation and check in on them between visits,” says Dr. Agena. The Louisiana native was born in Chalmette to an engineer father and a stay-at-home mother and grew up living in Africa, the Caribbean, South America, West Virginia, and back to his home state to graduate from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) in Natchitoches. A Northshore resident since 2006, Dr. Agena now works permanently in his Madisonville office after commuting for several years to Hammond and calls Covington home with his wife, Dee and their family of three children: Landon, age 13; Alison, age 8; and Chloe, age 5. An essential part of his team, Dee is Dr. Agena’s registered nurse and office manager. Dr. Agena’s family-friendly practice specializes in all stages of reproductive health: adolescents who are beginning their annual exams; contraceptive counseling; prenatal care, delivery and postpartum; perimenopausal and postmenopausal management; and other gynecological issues such as urinary incontinence and hysterectomies. He has hospital privileges at St. Tammany Parish Hospital as well as Lakeview Regional Medical Center. Dr. Agena delivers each baby himself. “Because I am a sole practitioner, my patients do not have to feel nervous or anxious about having someone they do not know deliver their baby,” he says.

Dr. Agena’s office is also a comprehensive OB/GYN facility all under one roof. Rather than having to visit another facility for lab work or an ultrasound, testing is performed in-house. Dee collects the lab samples and ultrasounds are performed by ultrasound technician, Katie Smith. From the clinical receptionist, Samantha McEachern to their billing specialist, Tamie Kraft, making patients feel cared for is how they run their business. “We are here for all of our patients, all of the time. Because of the access to electronic files, Dee and I can provide care for a patient from wherever and whenever necessary. Dee is able to pull up the patient’s data, medications, conditions, everything and not have them feel like they have to wait until Monday to reach us,” states Dr. Agena. Dr. Agena has a doctorate of medicine from LSU in New Orleans and he completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He returned to Louisiana and worked at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, three times receiving the North Oaks Champion award for excellence in patient care and completed his certification as a da Vinci® robotics surgeon. He is an honorary member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists for special excellence in endoscopic procedures and is a da Vinci® Surgical System trainer across the Gulf Coast area for Intuitive Surgical Inc., a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery.

The da Vinci® Surgical System combines computer and robotic technologies to provide enhanced visualization and precision during pelvic surgery and is used in over 60 percent of all hysterectomies performed nationwide. It is surgery with the smallest incisions, the potential for less recovery time and overall, for optimum patient outcomes. Dr. Agena’s ability to make each person feel special is an extension of how he spends time with his own family. This family man not only works hard but plays hard. All three children as well as Dr. Agena participate in a weekly, family karate class; enjoy fishing on the weekends; and cook together most evenings. “Every person, even the kids, has an apron. We cook together, sit down at the table together and clean up together. This is a big center of our life,” he says. Being together includes family and friends, especially when it comes to crawfish boils. “Dee is a ‘crawfish fanatic’ and throws regular, weekend boils. Our most recent boil was to watch the Kentucky Derby. We dressed up in all types of hats— bowlers, fedoras and clothing. It is always a lot of fun and another good reason to have a get together,” laughs Dr. Agena. Dr. Agena’s gifts to his patients far exceed his talent, experience and certifications. It is the manner and attention in which he treats each and every person. He believes that it all comes down to the respect he has for his patients. “Patients are not just a number, they are unique individuals with their own special gifts and needs. I treat each person with the same attention and compassion I would want extended to my own family,” states Dr. Agena.

WELCOME

Meet Our New Art Director— Dianne Waller Associate Publisher Sarah Cottrell turned the tables on our new Art Director Dianne Waller and asked her some of the questions that we like to ask our Enterprising Women.

Where were you born? I WAS BORN in Pasig, a suburb of Manila, Philippines. My mother is from Manila.

What is your life story?

Sophisticated Woman | June 2013

AFTER LIVING IN the Philippines as a toddler with my five siblings, my father graduated from medical school and we moved to his home state of New York and settled in Queens for a few years. I spent the majority of my childhood, until age fourteen, in Westchester. My father was in the Army Reserves and went to the Gulf War, upon his return, he re-enlisted as active duty, and we moved to Savannah, Ga. where he was assigned. I graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy and enrolled in Armstrong Atlantic State University.

20

What brought you to the Northshore? I MET MY HUSBAND, Evan at the Savannah Blues Bar where he was playing guitar with Eric Culberson. He asked me to move with him to Mandeville to be close to his parents.

Favorite thing about living on the Northshore? THE TAMMANY TRACE. It is the perfect family activity. I love to ride my bike—I used to ride the Bronx River Parkway from Bronxville, N.Y. to New Rochelle, N.Y. with my dad every Sunday. Riding on the Trace brings back great childhood memories.

GRADUATION

Christ Episcopal School’s graduating class of 2013: Clayton Williams, Mason Sheen, Graham Beck, Mandy Savage, Matthew Murphy and Sam Batson, pictured with faculty.

Plaza, the students have all been fully submerged in the 100-year celebration by learning about the history of Covington High and the traditions that were established before their time. They also learned about the significance of building the Bell Tower Plaza and how it connects the past, the present and the future. For the next chapter, some of them will choose post-secondary studies, some will choose the military and others will join the workforce. However, all will begin the next chapter by contributing to this vast world in their own unique way. I urge students to be who your heart beckons you to be and remain true to yourself. Even more, the class of 2013 is all starting a new chapter as they leave Covington High and its rich history behind. Congratulations 100th class of Covington High!”

TWO AREA HIGH SCHOOLS recently celebrated landmarks in their school’s history— Christ Episcopal School in Covington celebrated the school’s first high school graduation while Covington High School celebrated their 100th graduation. Christ Episcopal School Headmaster John Morvant explained, “Our first high school graduation represents an important milestone for Christ Episcopal School. Starting a new high school program was a challenging proposition, and the members of our inaugural graduating class have been an integral part of the development of our program. We are deeply grateful to these pioneering students and to their parents for the confidence and faith they gave us as we began this journey together four years ago. We are proud of our graduating seniors, and feel confident that they are well prepared for college and beyond.” For every journey in life, there is always somebody to forge the first path into unknown territory. In the case of Christ Episcopal High School, those six “somebodies” are Sam Batson, Graham Beck, Matthew Murphy, Mandy Savage, Mason Sheen and Clayton Williams. Covington High School Principal Deborah McCollum addressed the 300 plus graduating class of 2013, “This entire school year, the students have been a part of the Centennial celebration of Covington High. From the Centennial Kickoff and the September stage production of Mr. Gary Mendoza’s play, ‘What Fire Could Never Burn,’ to our ‘Roarin’ thru the Decades’ homecoming week and finally, the groundbreaking of the Centennial Bell Tower

BROWCH!

NEW CLIENTS • $99/Month • UNLIMITED EVERYTHING!

BEING IN THE WAXING business for as long as I have, I have come across my fair share of what I like to call “Browch”— botched eyebrows. As I have explained to my clients many times, eyebrows are sisters, not twins. However, there is an art to beautifully shaped brows. My approach is part design, part “What God gave ya.” To correct a browch, it is necessary to let them regrow before having them professionally shaped. Nothing pleases me more than naturally full brows that I get to shape to perfection; however, this is rarely the case. Most women have tweezed, waxed or threaded by their teens. The absolute worst are the dreaded nail shop brows. These brows are identified by their thinness, hook and lack of arch. The thing that blows my skirt the most is the fact that many nail shop technicians are not licensed to wax. A brow wax is only legally performed by a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist in Louisiana.

I get to shape to perfection. I urge clients to not frequent these places, as they are uninsured, untrained, and worst of all, unhygienic. It is important to know when you have any part of your body waxed, that the technician never double dip their sticks into the wax, as this will contaminate the entire pot. If the wax is cool enough to touch your skin, it is not hot enough to kill bacteria, disease or bloodborne pathogens. This is why you may pay $15 at a reputable spa or salon verses the $8 at a nail shop. I assure you, your health, safety and Bombshell eyebrows are well worth it!

Slidell developed in the area now known as Olde Towne. In 1962, when the Slidell Chamber was first formed, Gause Boulevard, West Hall Avenue and Robert Road were still gravel roads and there were no twin spans until 1965. That was also about the time “things started cracking” as described by Fred Finch, Jr., the tourism and recreation director for the Chamber. The Neuhauser’s pasture became the Slidell Computer Complex, which is now Textron Land and Marine headquarters, connecting Slidell to the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and the John C. Stennis Space Center in nearby Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. During the next decade, Slidell tripled in size expanding businesses and neighborhoods. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Slidell experienced a storm surge causing damage to the majority of homes and businesses. The community as a whole rallied together to rebuild and came back stronger than ever. Situated at the intersection of Interstates 10, 12, and 59, Slidell is an easy target for economic development and growth. Since 2005, the East St. Tammany Chamber has doubled in size currently representing over 1,000 local businesses. Mayor Freddy Drennan refers to Slidell as the “best kept secret of the south” and describes it as a virtual paradise with opportunities for fishing, hunting, shrimping, crabbing, crawfishing, boating, swimming and camping. Guided or personal boat tours can give you a close-up view full of wildlife and beautiful scenery on local bayous and rivers. In less than thirty minutes, you can be on sandy beaches in Mississippi or at a sports arena near the French Quarters.

І LEADERS Does Your Worklife Fulfill You?

WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON, PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

FOR MANY STUDENTS, June is the first month of summer vacation— a time to finally relax and enjoy all that life has to offer. For those of us who are not students, it is just another month to continue following our employment routine. Four lessons to improve your outlook can be achieved by asking yourself “Does your worklife fulfill you? Are you happy at work, and if not, what can you do to be happier in your employment?” The first step leading to an improved happiness quotient is to perceive problems not as unmanageable struggles or obstacles, but as opportunities and challenges. Yes, easier said than done, but it is a mindset that you can activate and achieve with practice. The second is to not sweat the small stuff. We all

know it is easier to focus on something miniscule and to blow it up into a giant problem than to let those small issues go. Just let them go. Thirdly, choose your business associates wisely. If you spend time at work with negative thinking people, they will eventually bring you down to their level. Lastly, accept that which you cannot change. Children quickly learn that life is not fair; we as adults need to remember this lesson, and not obsess on what simply is not in our control. Learning these four simple lessons will help you become more fulfilled at work and happier with your work routine. It is not a summer vacation, but it will lead to a more relaxing work environment.

Join the Chamber

WRITTEN BY BY JANET FABRE SMITH WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER, MEMBERSHIP CHAIR

WHEN I MOVED to the Northshore, I asked many people which organizations they thought I should get involved with to really get to know the community. Resoundingly, the response I got time after time was “Join the Chamber. It is a strong and respected organization and if you are in business, you really need to be a member.” So, I did just that. I discovered that the St. Tammany West Chamber is a broad and diverse organization of 1,000 members (representing over 30,000 employees in our area) made up of the largest businesses and some of the smallest. However, each segment is served in a different way. I know that for most small businesses, generating leads and growing the business is a priority. The Chamber offers numerous opportunities for

networking and promoting your business including a referral program for people seeking a recommendation. My company generated business from one of those referrals that has resulted in enough new revenue to pay for our Chamber membership for the next 65 years! Larger companies may be more interested in being part of a group that has the ear of state legislators and other governmental officials. They know there is strength in numbers and their investment in the Chamber pays off because of the power of the combined voices of businesses in our area. Whatever your interest, you can be assured that there is a place in the Chamber for you. Take the same wise advice that I was given and join the Chamber today.

On Flag Day, June 14, “Millennia,” José-Maria Cundin’s reproduction of the Declaration of Independence will be displayed in the City Hall lobby. It is an international fine arts press dedicated to the publication of documents that have served as the cornerstones of liberty over the last thousand years. “Millennia” has been an inspiration to freedom-loving people across the nation.

I also want to thank Bill Dobson, his staff and entire board for hosting the Mandeville Seafood Festival for the past 34 years. This humble community service began as a small hometown festival and grew in popularity to a major event bringing together residents across the parish, state and the entire Gulf South. We truly appreciate the time, effort and hard work given to produce an event that was enjoyed by so many for three and a half decades and proudly saluted our nation’s independence. The good news is that the Mandeville Seafood Festival will continue! Now brought to you by Chetta Productions, the festival will be held in Fontainebleau State Park July 4 – 6. BARBARA KINGSOLVER’S The Lacuna is an ambitious historical narrative that only Kingsolver can imagine. The Lacuna is the story of Harrison William Shepherd told through his journal entries, personal letters and newspaper clippings. It takes a while to get into the flow from his boyhood in Mexico to the precarious shelter offered by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as he worked as their cook. Through Kahlo and Rivera, he is acquainted with Leon Trotsky, in exile from Stalinist Russia. Later, we find Shepherd back in the states, taking up residence in Asheville, N.C., writing potboilers about the Aztecs and investigated by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). Although Kingsolver brings her usual delight for language and knack for wellresearched storytelling, the novel leaves a lot to be desired. At times, it seems to be rambling with no point. Shepherd appears to simply be watching life pass him by, never really taking part in the narrative of life that swirls around him. The events of the novel from the Mexican Revolution to the darkening political winds of America during and after World War II seem not to affect Shepherd on a personal level, and this is what is lacking in Kingsolver’s novel. Nonetheless, Kingsolver’s novel about art and revolution leaves the reader wanting for more. Much more. Barbara Kingsolver’s The Lacuna is available as an e-book at St. Tammany Parish Library and in area bookstores.

Mother Nature’s Classroom WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK

AT THIS PARTICULAR time of the year, children are home from school and looking for something to keep their minds engaged. What better place to keep them occupied than in Mother Nature’s classroom? A good place to start is watching a seed turn into a living plant. Find a small area in your yard that has good light, border the area with landscape timbers and create a rectangular enclosed garden. Fill in with fresh topsoil. If the area has grass below, use a heavy layer of newspaper to keep the grass from invading the planting area. Mix in sand and begin with a fresh, weed-free place to start seeds or seedlings. Using both can be fun because your young student can see the progress more quickly. Vegetable plants and flowering plants can be used together. Your local nursery should have all the ingredients you need and a quick visit to the local library to obtain a gardening guide will help prepare for what is ahead. If you do not have room for a garden bed, containers will work just as well and may be easier for a small child to manage. They can also be moved if the growing conditions are not working out.

Allow your youngster to be the primary caretaker. Make sure they have a pair of gloves and tools that are age appropriate. They should water, prune and fertilize as needed. This will teach them responsibility. Once they see things growing and perhaps harvest a few vegetables, you will have created a future gardener. They may even be more willing to try vegetables or greens that they have never eaten before. Encourage them to help you in your established garden areas. Teach them about top mulching with pine straw, trimming the finished bloomers and maintaining a beautiful, green yard. Many hands lighten the yard chores and surprisingly, questions will abound. If you do not know the answer, use the opportunity to look up information together. Field trips to our many local nature areas will help them learn to identify and name plants. How many trees can you name? Can you name all the shrubs and blooming plants in your garden? This summer would be a great time to start learning these things together. Mother Nature’s classroom is packed with interesting subjects and always welcomes newcomers!

Get in the Loop

WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT

AT PARISH GOVERNMENT, we work every day to provide the citizens of St. Tammany a safe environment in which to live, and an efficient system to provide direction when an emergency situation does arise. As we approach hurricane season, we encourage every person in the Parish to have plans in place in anticipation of weather events. However, we would like you to be looped into our plan as well. We are asking that a member of every household in the Parish access the link to the ALERT St. Tammany self-registration portal at stpgov.org and sign up for our Parish-wide emergency telephone alert system. You can also sign up directly through an app on the Parish’s Facebook page at facebook.com/sttammany parish. This system will link your address to as many

as three phone numbers, including cell phones. In the event that you need to be notified because of a weather emergency such as a mandatory hurricane evacuation, a man-made disaster like a hazardous materials spill or any event, which requires action on your part to get you and your family members to safety, this system will place an alert call to the numbers associated with your address. For families with elderly parents living alone, in addition to their own home phone, the system can link the cellular numbers of able-bodied family members to the elderly person’s address, who will also be notified if their loved one needs to take action. Take a minute and get in the loop. These calls can save a life.
