Breast Enhancement “A friend recommended Dr. Kinsley for breast augmentation to me. Just a few months ago I had the silicone breast augmentation done. This is the best gift I have ever received. I am amazed at the self confidence and joy I have with my body now. Dr. Kinsley and her staff were so professional and gave me the feeling of long lost friends. Thank you Dr. Kinsley for finally making it easy for me to look in the mirror.” —Sandra, Mandeville

WAS ANYONE ELSE as happy as I was to Signature _____________________________________ finally see their toes? The warmer weather seems to be here to stay. Even though we Date ________________________________________ celebrated the New Year just three short months ago, that renewed feeling can be gradually doused by everyday life. Thank goodness for the blessing of spring. The whiff of the first spring day creates in me the urge to let the fresh air in and make everything easy and light. The windows are opened, closets are sorted, gardens are prepared for spring planting and everyone seems to be out and about walking, boating, riding bikes and celebrating Mardi Gras and the luck of the Irish. It seems like that renewed energy comes surging back, and everyday life seems to be more exhilarating. In this issue, you can virtually feel the warmth and energy of spring. Is Invisalign Right for Me?

MANY ADULTS AND teens alike can benefit from orthodontic treatment. However, some patients may become self-conscious about having to wear braces. For patients who want to improve their smile without interfering with their day-to-day lives, Invisalign is a great option. The clear, custom aligners are removable, which makes for easy eating, brushing and flossing. Best yet, there is little or no disruption to the patient’s lifestyle other than office visits to deliver aligners and monitor progress. Invisalign can correct a wide range of orthodontic problems, including crowding, widely spaced teeth, cross-bites and overbites. The series of aligners are worn for two weeks each, and patients return to the office every four to eight weeks for delivery of more aligners and evaluation of treatment progress. The treatment generally takes anywhere from six months to a year to complete, with results comparable to traditional orthodontic treatment.

wavy, spiral-shaped ruffles. For the brazen bride, short dresses are in this year. For all of the ladies waiting to slip into their romantic flowing chiffon and tulle ball gowns with their bouquets of fresh indigenous flowers spilling over at the sides; you are on the cutting edge of current trends. Dresses with layers upon layers of fabric will swish and sway down many an aisle this year. For the groom, rumor has it—grey is the new black. Wedding belts, ala Chelsea Clinton, decadently bedecked in everything from Swarovski crystals to feathers, rhinestones, lace and pearls, seem to be here to stay for awhile. In keeping with the theme of textured depth and elegance, look for petal and bloom appliqués near the neck, hemline and on the train of the bride’s chosen frock. Blush and bashful just won’t do this spring. Trend watchers say saturated hues like magenta, Kelly green, Slate grey, mochas and violet purples please the eyes and buck traditional trends this year. For bridesmaids,

Sophisticated Woman | March 2011

CAN YOU RECALL THE SCENE in Steel Magnolias where Shelby (Julia Roberts) refers to her signature wedding colors—blush and bashful? What about the red velvet groom’s cake in the shape of an armadillo? How about all of those ladies with sassy wide-brimmed hats dancing the two step to Zydeco music? That was a wedding (albeit a movie wedding) steeped in southern tradition. Right now in 2011, southern traditions continue to linger, even as modern brides stay on the cusp of current trends. For every bride, there is that one dress that makes them feel as though no other woman can wear it the quite the way they can. For the unsuspecting groom at the end of the aisle, seeing his bride for the first time in that very dress is the moment he remembers forever. Designers, planners and trend watchers are forecasting another year filled with billowy romance, adorned with texture. Look for tulle and lace combinations, floral appliqués, crystal and rhinestone embellishments and

designers’ 1950’s vintage-inspired looks ooze sophistication and simplicity without upstaging the bride. Vintage weddings are giving brides the chance to place their own signature on the event, as this trend is seeing couples create their wedding day ambience from things like handmade favors and family heirlooms incorporated into the ceremony and reception. Outdoor venues are also a hit, while little extras like dessert tables (in addition to the traditional cakes), after parties and after hours snacks (like sliders), man caves with cigars, brandy and even video gaming stations, entice guests to go the distance. Virtual guest books, photo booths and slide shows add an interactive feel to the event. All wedding traditions started somewhere, and some of today’s modern brides are starting their own by cutting out oldies but goodies like the bouquet toss, the cake cutting ceremony and even the cake. Wherever the trends take us, southern weddings will always remain a celebration between families and dear friends, surrounded by beauty, elegance, romance and history. Use the pages in this issue as your guide to creating lasting wedding memories.

and Bridegroom to Be PLANNING AND ORGANIZING a wedding can be stressful for any couple. It doesn’t have to be if you plan accordingly. Your dress and tux will look perfect if you are slimmer, have glowing skin and you’re de-stressed. In addition to exercise and eating well prior to the special day, you may need to stimulate your metabolism so that your gown and tux fit just right. Consider a seaweed body wrap. This thorough two and a half hour session will detoxify and slim you down up to 24 inches (results vary by individual) in just one session. Some brides pair the wrap with a cellulite massage to target specific areas. They feel better when they slip into their swimsuit, like their bikini, for the honeymoon trip. The cellulite massage will also help to reduce even more unwanted inches. This spring most bridal gowns feature styles that show your arms, underarms and back. If you’re like most women, you’re concerned with unwanted body hair. The options like shaving, waxing or depilatory creams will only result in razor burn, irritated raw skin, unsightly bumps and even burns from the chemicals in the creams. Body sugaring is an advanced all-natural method of hair removal that dates back 2,000 years to the days of Cleopatra. Egyptian women still use this technique to remove their entire facial and body hair prior to marriage because of the positive results. With multiple sessions, the hair will not return. Finally, prior to the big wedding day, stress may overwhelm some brides and bridegrooms. The ideal stress reliever is a full body massage, which will relax and soothe you. Whether you carry your tension in the neck, shoulders or back areas, the power of touch is the all-natural solution to pain relief for you and your entire wedding party. Your local independent day spa is waiting to help you achieve the ideal wedding day.

How do you relay the seriousness of such an important test without stressing your child to the point of anxiety? There are several things you can do to ensure your child will have a good experience. “My child doesn’t test well.” This is something I hear a lot. You need to realize that standardized testing is only an accumulation of skills taught throughout your child’s schooling. If you fear your child will not pass a standardized test with flying colors, they may not be retaining information. Maureen (Moe) Clary— Poised to Lead

Sophisticated Woman | March 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

MAUREEN CLARY—MOE—as she is known, has worn many hats during her life; single mother, breast cancer survivor, businesswoman, home builder, community leader and now as a candidate for Covington’s next mayor in the April 2nd election. Some hats have been easier to wear than others, but each one has shaped the person she is today—an industrious professional woman, dedicated to her family, her community and her commitment to public service. “I am asking Covington to hire me as their Chief Executive Officer (CEO), just as you would hire a qualified person to run your business,” she says. “I will bring 30 years of business experience to city hall and an innovative, intelligent approach to creating a more vibrant economy. I see this as an opportunity to take the experience that I have gained over the years, and use it to improve this place I call home.” Having achieved success in the construction industry, commercial real estate and urban planning throughout her storied career, Moe says her position as executive vice president of Latter and Blum’s property management division, overseeing eight million square feet of properties and managing over 225 employees, is the job that prepared her the most for running a city. “I used to tell the property managers that my job was like being the mayor of a small city. Every morning when I wake up, I am responsible for making sure the lights come on, the bills are paid, and I then have to promote this property.” She currently works as a preeminent independent consultant where the culmination of her years of business expertise, leadership wisdom and arduous work ethic intertwine. Moe’s vision for Covington involves keeping the city she knows and loves thriving, while forging a successful path for its future. “As a city, we cannot operate in a vacuum. We must build partnerships with and leverage the resources of nearby communities. We need to make people aware that Covington is an excellent place to do business, and also to have a business.” She says within her first 90 days in office she will conduct an operational audit within every department to find out what is working efficiently and what is causing the roadblocks to efficiency. “Once this is determined, we can work on how do we get to where we want to be.”

love about this city is that it is urban living with a small town feel. I love living in downtown. I love that I can walk to nearly everything, and that there are weekends I don’t even have to get in my car.” As a leader, Moe sees herself as a person willing to ask the tough questions and find solutions. “As the mayor, you have my commitment that every decision will answer these three questions, ‘Is it effective? Is it efficient? Is it the best decision for the people and businesses that call Covington home?’”

approach to creating a more vibrant economy.

Sophisticated Woman | March 2011

Preservation is paramount, but assessing the diverse needs of the citizenry is also a priority. “Covington is an interesting mix of lifelong residents and residents who have chosen Covington for different reasons. In the environment we live in today, 8:30 to 4:30 is unrealistic. People still want the opportunity to do everything in person, but I want to step up technology so that we can use it in our citizens’ favor.” She would like to see the day when people can do most, if not all, of their business with the city online, when they cannot make it into the physical office. “I would like people to be able to register for sports, apply for permits, contact public works for service requests and monitor the status of those requests—all online,” she says. Moe is committed to fostering “a culture of excellence” in every aspect of city government. “Everyone from the clerk who takes your utility payment to the voice who answers your call at public works for city services will be expected to perform professionally. From my experience, people crave and respond to great customer service.” Her philosophy is that employees need to be motivated and given the training and tools they need to do their jobs. And they must be held accountable. “I believe that people do not expect perfection, they expect you to be honest and make a great recovery. I can guarantee that if we make a mistake, we will admit it, apologize for it, fix it and move on.” She and her husband, Peter Link, are parents to a combined family of six adult children and proud grandparents to a dozen grandchildren. They ardently support local non-profits. Peter was recently recognized as one of the Real Men of St. Tammany for his dedication to his family and his community. Moe has been intricately involved with Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West since 1999, serving first on the board of directors and then as president and CEO. She also volunteers with the Children’s Advocacy Center, Hope House and is a member of the Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force. As a resident, Moe finds many reasons to love Covington. “What I

Sophisticated Woman | March 2011

THE LOSE DAT Team Weight Loss Challenge—the 10 week fitness program exclusive to Franco’s—has people on the Northshore talking. People like Darlene of Mandeville, who signed up for the third season of Lose Dat on the very same day she heard about it. “I am tired of saying tomorrow and looking at the mirror and being ashamed of myself. I want to

an ad for Lose Dat and everyone looked like regular people; people like me.” —Darlene, Mandeville look good and feel good. I want to take care of me. I want to start a new lifestyle. I want to join the human race again and not be embarrassed to go out with my husband because I am too heavy. I saw an ad for Lose Dat and everyone looked like regular people; people like me.” Season three begins with orientation on March 22nd. Mark Bascle is the fitness director of Franco’s Health Club and Spa in Mandeville. “This program was designed for anyone that has reached that point in their lives where they are no longer willing to wait one more day for change,” he says. “People want some kind of routine when they join a health club. Without a plan and accountability, people often times find themselves unable to follow through on their fitness goals.” The Lose Dat program is an unprecedented combination of tried and true techniques coupled with Franco’s own fitness finesse. It requires a 10 week commitment, five hours per week. The competition between teams is partnered with a diverse training routine. Participants are introduced to something new every week which causes “muscle confusion” and prevents the body from reaching a plateau. With a typical workout (doing the same types of exercises a few times a week), muscles become accustomed to the routine and results are minimized. Muscle confusion mixes things up the so the muscles have a harder time adapting. In turn they work harder, and the weight loss results are visibly drastic. Will McGhee, a grocery produce manager from Lacombe and the top weight loss winner from the 2010 fall season, honored that commitment at the urging of his wife, who had herself lost 20 pounds in the program. His weight had topped out at 316 pounds. He excelled, he says, because of the support of his fellow team members and with the guidance of his personal trainer. “We did every kind of workout you can imagine, in the weight room, on the treadmills, in the pool. We learned so much about nutrition and proper eating habits,” Will says. By the end of the 2010 Fall

Lose Dat competition he had lost over 67 pounds and has lost a total of over 80 pounds to date. Each season culminates with a fantastic party, complete with prizes. Julie Hudson, the program director for Franco’s says the team dynamic, not the prizes, is the huge motivator. “The group dynamic brings a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment,” she says. “If you’re going to endure you might as well endure with someone else.” She says some teams even stay together after the program ends for regular weekly work outs, waiting for the next Lose Dat Challenge to launch. Last season, the 11-member winning team, the “Red Hots,” lost a total of 258 pounds and a combined average of 11.5 percent total body weight. Everyone on the team agreed that personal trainer Rob Jacob, team captain Kathy Mays and the bonds of friendship formed within those 10 weeks, inspired them and kept them motivated. “I had been a

member of Franco’s for years,” team member Lee Mackenzie says, “but I was too intimidated to take classes.” She says during Lose Dat the group effort was what kept her going. “Everyone is losing weight and it’s the team dynamic that really inspires you.” Mark says belonging to a team instills confidence and pride, “We see people start to come out of their shells. They are not just members of our health club; they are part of our Franco’s family. We find it extremely important to establish a solid connection with our members.” Karen and Bill Magee are part of the Lose Dat and Franco’s communities. They will both return for the spring session. Karen returns as a motivational coach, while Bill will participate again as a team member. “At age 56 I just felt like I needed get fit again. I heard a lot about Lose Dat. The most important part of the program for me was to learn about how much garbage we put into our body and how simple it is to adopt a healthy lifestyle with the food we eat.” Over the first two seasons, the Lose Dat Challenge has seen 220 people lose a combined 3700 pounds, and seen people meet and exceed their fitness goals. Sandy Franco, founder and owner of Franco’s says it has been amazing to see. “When people go through a challenging experience together, something happens. They far exceed their capabilities and it may not have happened if it weren’t for the encouragement of their team mates. When it ends, there is a sense of accomplishment and bonds are formed that last a lifetime.”

Season three of the Lose Dat Team Weight Loss Challenge begins March 28, registration ends March 19th. To register, go to www.myfrancos.com or stop by in person at 100 Bon Temps Roule in Mandeville, 985.792.0200.

POnChatOUla

YEARS Ponchatoula—Rich in History & Community

Sophisticated Woman | March 2011

WRITTEN BY JIM PERRIN

26

2011 MARKS THE SESQUICENTENNIAL (150 years) of Ponchatoula’s incorporation in 1861. Like all the major cities in Tangipahoa Parish, Ponchatoula began as a railroad settlement in the mid-nineteenth century. The construction of the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad through this area in 1852 and 1853 prompted settlers to move to the first railroad crossing north of the swamps. In the van of the railroad construction crews was a company surveyor named James B. Clarke, who purchased a section of land and surveyed a town he would call Ponchatoula. Clarke laid out city blocks, common areas for schools, parks and streets, and began selling lots in his new town in late 1854. The piney woods settlement of Ponchatoula was named for the nearby Ponchatoula River to the west of the city. The name Ponchatoula is a Choctaw term meaning hanging hair, a reference to the abundant Spanish moss which festoons area trees. Additional settlers moved to Ponchatoula and the village was incorporated in February 1861, just weeks before the outbreak of the Civil War. The war’s destruction and subsequent reconstruction period slowed the growth of

the community, but by 1870, Ponchatoula boasted a population of 320 souls. The economy of the Ponchatoula area during the nineteenth century was centered on farming and lumbering of both pine and cypress timber. The pace of economic activity quickened in the opening years of the twentieth century with the emergence of the strawberry industry as a major cash crop for area farmers. By 1910, there were over a thousand residents of Ponchatoula and the downtown area had developed with a number of impressive brick buildings along the main street. During the decade of the 1920’s two large cypress lumber mills operated at the southern edge of Ponchatoula conducting logging activities in the nearby swamps. This industrial growth sparked a concurrent increase in the municipal, educational and social infrastructure in the community. The importance of lumbering on the area economy later declined as mill operations concluded with the cutting of the last viable cypress trees in the swamp. The strawberry industry also declined after World War II and Ponchatoula came to adopt a more varied economy. Many workers commuted from Ponchatoula to work in chemical and industrial plants along

Ponchatoula’s Strawberry Festival held each April, attracts visitors by the tens of thousands to enjoy the charm of the “Strawberry Capital.” The opening years of the twenty-first century find Ponchatoula to be a vibrant and dynamic community, which has been able to retain that small town atmosphere so attractive to families seeking a new home.

We’re All in This Together BY NATURE, human beings are drawn toward connections. Usually, the earliest and most sustaining connections we experience are with family. Mental illness is a family experience—shared together, but suffered separately. It is unlikely that people navigate their lives unscathed by the distress that mental illness can create for families. The incidence of mental illness in the U.S. population is estimated to be one in four persons, with one in five families affected. These families encounter a profoundly unique suffering in their experience of illness given the influence that symptoms may have on interpersonal relationships. Relational suffering is described as a complex, intense, human experience that involves the loss of relationships with significant others. Families describe that often, it is not the family member with the mental illness that suffers the most, but rather the other family members. Children are particularly impacted by mental illness diagnosed in family members. Mental illness impacts on parenting. For example, studies find that parents who have mental illness offer less sensitive and competent parenting, with depressed mothers less likely to be emotionally available and affectionate. These families have lower cohesion and poorer communication than other families. Interventions with a mental health professional for families affected by mental illness, can be effective in lending support to work with children across the developmental spectrum rather than considering a child’s age as an obstacle in treatment. For example, psycho-education interventions with a depressed parent and children can increase the understanding of mental illness and lower the risk of the children internalizing the symptomology. Family members typically want to be involved, and appropriate referrals can help facilitate this process.

The Message of Flowers WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK

As time went by, the elegant ladies of the Victorian era made these sweet smelling bouquets into small, tightly gathered arrangements of aromatic flowers which they bound together with colorful ribbon and often wore on the bodice. These were called tussie-mussies or nosegays as they literally kept the nose gay. Floriography—the language of flowers— came into use during the Victorian era to communicate messages which were otherwise socially unacceptable to voice. One could send flowers or plants to a lover or sweetheart to convey special meaning. Flowers used in courtship, weddings and other special occasions took on secret hidden meanings. White lilies and lily of the valley were frequently used in bridal bouquets to indicate the bride was pure of heart, trustworthy, humble and sweet. Red roses symbolized true love, and any solid colored rose was a confirmation of true love.

not fall intoon the reception tables Floralto arrangements could be embellished with ivy to signify love, honor and thoughtfulness. Bridal bouquets made from violets communicated friendship, fidelity, affection and love. As baby’s breath and red roses both carried the meaning of everlasting love, they also came to be a part of many bridal bouquets. The orchid was the elegant symbol of love, beauty and refinement and usually indicated wealth; while magnolias signified beauty, love of nature, nobility and splendor. Red tulips declared that, “You are loved.” If you wished to be more subtle one sent petite sunflowers to signify, “You are adored.” Jonquils denoted desire (definitely a feeling not to be voiced in good company in Victorian times) and violets remembrance. It is interesting and exciting today to see how we can incorporate these Victorian meanings into our present day use of flowers in arrangements. І leaders Vote Early, Vote Often?

WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON

IN APRIL THE VOTERS of Covington will elect a new mayor and council, and in just a couple of months a new face and writer will appear in this spot to represent them. While I support term limits, I will leave kicking and screaming, but it will be time. In Covington the limit is two terms. Boy, eight years can fly by and they were the best of my life. And as hard as it will be to leave it behind, I believe that a different perspective, fresh energy, new priorities and renewed creativity bring opportunity to our city. Long term incumbency can lead to complacency and the phrase, “because that’s the way we’ve always done it.” Those who don’t support term limits will argue that it’s up to the people to decide. It’s a tall order to

challenge a long term incumbent with years of established influence, and what we in Louisiana have come to call political machines and wealthy war chests. I prefer the level playing field insured by term limits and I applaud those who offer themselves for public service. Either way, the voters of Covington have some major decisions to make in April, and I encourage them to carefully consider their choices, but most of all to make them and make them count in the voting booth. The right to vote has been hard won, and each time you exercise it, you honor the people who have fought and died for your right to do it. Your vote is your voice. Let yours be heard.

Northshore Rising Professionals Energize the Chamber

WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT

DURING COMMITTEE MEETINGS, several dynamics take place at once. Not only is there give and take, speaking and listening, with leaders, doers and followers present, there is also a flow and transfer of energy taking place. As CEO of our Chamber, I attend some but not all, of our active committees’ meetings. Most are held monthly, with action steps taken by members in between, and staff support where needed. However, in the first month of the year I do attend each meeting and brief each one on some of the specific goals of other committees and goal-related events we have planned in the Chamber year ahead. We have a lot going on at once, so this verbal communication is important. But while I am there to speak, I also listen and observe.

One of our youngest committees is the Northshore Rising Professionals—the NRPs. In its third year, energy is high and goals ambitious. They boast over 50 active members and their 2011 goals include: collaboration with other committees, provide social and networking opportunities, increase committee and Chamber membership, and community outreach. I left the NRP meeting filled with positive energy! I “caught it” from their members. Because of it, I expect great things from NRPs this year. If you want to “catch it” too, visit our website for more info on the NRPs and our other positively active committees at www.sttammanychamber.org.

Chamber Ambassadors keep the Heart Beating

THE EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER has installed its new Board of Directors for 2011 and is moving full speed ahead with the Program of Work. The Chamber provides its members with the tools they need to be successful in being able to provide for their families or in order to keep their business and community viable. I always say, the membership is the heart of any chamber. The Ambassador Program is a vital source to the Chamber. Although every single member has the responsibility of being both a good representative of the Chamber and an advocate for the Chamber, it is the responsibility of the formal Ambassadors group to keep that heart beating. The Ambassadors serve as the liaison between the Chamber members and the Chamber leadership so that business needs can be met and so that leadership in the Chamber is acutely aware of how members can better be served on a local, state, and even on the federal level. Mark Baham of STARC, Committee Chairman of the Ambassador group explained, “Some of the richest

resources in St. Tammany Parish are the wonderful, generous-hearted people who live here. Many of those same individuals, as a business owner or as a professional, are keenly aware of the advantage of networking and working together in order to make St. Tammany Parish (the fastest growing parish and the fourth largest parish in the State of Louisiana) an even better place for all of us.” “Ambassadors serve as greeters at each monthly luncheon and at events such as the Business After Hours. Each new member is adopted by and ambassador as soon as they join. Then, the ambassador, who is the first point of contact, link new members with current members; thereby continuing to develop an even stronger Chamber group. Good ambassadors, in essence, are the public relations face and heart of the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce.” To find out more about membership or the Ambassador program, check out www.estchamber.com.

Jacob has experienced rampant injustice too, early in his life, and is therefore is loathe to trust anyone. He ridicules counselors, teachers, preachers and mentors, who, despite their best efforts, cannot reach a scarred, scared, aloof and lonesome young man. However, the conclusion of the novel hints that there is hope for Jacob as he breaks out of the “patterns of paper monsters.” The Patterns of Paper Monsters (2010) by Emma Rathbone is available at St. Tammany Parish Library and in local bookstores.

Meet Colby!

Registered Dental Hygienist

Colby Jenkins, RDH, is relatively new to the field of dental hygiene, but she has always had a fascination with oral health. She wants every parent to know that kids learn from your example how to take care of their own teeth. “The more they see Mom and Dad brushing and flossing, the more they will imitate that behavior,” she says. “I am always stressing to my pediatric patients the importance of flossing and brushing at least two times a day.” Adding to pediatric problems is the lack of fluoride in the water on the Northshore. Colby suggests fluoride rinses, supplements and sealants for children. Colby graduated from LSU School of Dentistry in 2009.
