OVER THE YEARS there have been a number of studies that have attempted to draw correlations between various aspects of health and walking speed. It makes a lot of sense. If you are able to walk faster, you are probably more comfortable walking, therefore you will probably walk more. Walking burns more calories, helps retain muscle strength, and offers a whole host of other health benefits. The most recent study of this type looks at the link between walking speed and knee osteoarthritis. It was published last month in Arthritis Care and Research. In this study, 1,858 participants were timed when walking. It turns out that the population that consistently walked faster had less knee pain and less evidence of knee joint degeneration than those who walked more slowly. “That’s a no-brainer!” I hear you saying. “Of course they walk faster. Their knees don’t hurt!”

The Truth About Porcelain Veneers
2/3 Junior Page Bleed—6.1295” x 11”
PORCELAIN VENEERS have been through several changes since their invention in the early 1980’s. Initially held in by adhesives, the etching of teeth with acid allowed for a more predictable outcome. Today companies have branded their veneers with familiar names like, Lumineers®, da Vinci, Empress®, Emax, Feldspathic veneers, etcetera. What should the consumer know about the different brands of veneers as well as the procedure to create a beautiful life-like smile? The determination of the type of veneer is determined by the dentist after an evaluation and conversation with the patient to clarify their goals. Underlying tooth color, existing wear patterns, length of the final veneer, position of existing teeth, lip position and facial symmetry are many aspects that must be taken into consideration before the procedure is started. Tooth preparation is the key to both beauty and longevity! For patients with mild to moderate color change and minimal wear patterns, preparations that remain in the enamel layer allow for the strongest, most beautiful, and most life-like result. For patients with tetracycline type staining or misaligned teeth, more aggressive tooth preparation may be needed to achieve the desired result. Many times these restorations must be finished in the dentin (second layer of the tooth) which slightly lowers the bond strength to the veneer. When considering treatment, it is important to ask the appropriate questions and communicate your expectations. Ask the dentist to show you photographs of their own completed treatment. Spend the time getting comfortable with the dentist’s protocol, especially the emphasis he or she places on the temporaries.

Register online at www.estchamber.com or call (985) 643-5678. I did my doctoral work on children’s behavior, in residential treatment, and maternal contact. I learned that children can accept mother’s absence if she has good reason to be absent (deceased) or is consistent with visiting. Overall, children who had mothers who visited them routinely demonstrated more positive than negative behavior. Discipline and motherhood go together. Not all discipline practices fit every child. The child who is outgoing, talkative, extroverted needs short timeouts and suffers away from the action. Solitary confinement is difficult for an extrovert. The child who is ingoing, quiet, introverted needs a “time in”—that is placing a chair in the middle of the room. This is a better way of capturing his attention. Taking the introverted child Colors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. aside and talking to him alone enforces This ad may not be used without permission from G&A Publishing. Failure to acknowledge or return this proof will not alter contract obligations. the behavior that needs to be corrected. He likes the one-on-one attention whereas the extroverted child wants to be with the others, the introverted child enjoys time away from everyone. In all cases the briefest time necessary to correct the behavior is best. “Stand right there, and count silently to 30 by spelling each number.” Or saying, “Go to your room, and when you get a grip, you may rejoin the family for dinner.” Extroverts take ownership of the situation and “get a grip” immediately. Mothers are observant and know the nuances of what discipline practices work best for each child. Grandmothers are like this too. On a personal note, readers who follow my column may recall that my son, David, was married last May. He and his wife Rosa, are expecting their first child this May. I’ll update y’all every now and then about how we are doing.

Put Your Best 985-893-7350 Breast | Fax 985-893-7686 Forward! AS WE CELEBRATE Mother’s Day this month, it gives us the opportunity to reflect upon our womanhood, motherhood and as women—pregnancy. It is quite possibly the biggest milestone in a woman’s life. There is no other time when her body will go through more changes than when she is carrying a child. Just as we’re all unique, the extent of those changes and how quickly they happen is unique for every woman. The first parts of the body affected by pregnancy are often the breasts. Women generally go up at least one band size and one cup size during pregnancy because of many factors. Among them, the body’s own preparation for breast feeding, swollen breasts and a rib cage that is changing to accommodate a growing baby. During pregnancy a woman’s maternity bra needs will depend on how much and how often her body changes. It’s more important than ever to wear the right size bra. An ill-fitting bra can cause pressure on sensitive, tender and sore breasts. In contrast, a well supporting bra will alleviate unnecessary strain on your neck and shoulders caused by heavier breasts.

An ill-fitting bra can cause
pressure on sensitive, tender and sore breasts.
Look for bras that are 100 percent cotton or a cotton blend. The bra you select should have the capability to accommodate the many changes that accompany motherhood. Consider whether or not you plan to nurse your baby, and invest in a comfortable, durable nursing bra as well. There are many bras designed to fit several band and cup sizes to allow for your body’s fluctuations during this time. Most importantly women should be able to choose bras that are functional but still retain their personal style!

Casey Sanchez, seasoned stylist of Element A Redken Salon in Mandeville, says she likes to break the ice when she meets new clients by asking how they decided to come to her. She notes that as a stylist, she personally gains a great deal from feedback and inquiries from clients. “I like to immediately get on the same page with my clients. For example, if someone asks for a trim, I will first determine what their idea of a trim is, so that we can establish what the client means precisely,” she says. “It is also good to let your stylist know what you don’t want, so that we do not repeat that hairstyle or technique.” Casey also says she and most stylists agree that if you are unhappy with something about your cut after you leave the salon, come back to the stylist so they can tweak it to make you happy. “Our ultimate goal is to have a happy client. We want people to ask about your stylist. We like nothing more than an open line of communication.”

Imagine what your life would be like if you had energy, excitement and clear thinking everyday…
IT IS SO RARE—that precious time we have to ourselves. Many of us use this time to tend to our own personal care through a fresh hairstyle, or grooming and pampering at our local spa. When you do decide to get away and plunge into that new style or day at the spa, here are some ideas from the experts about what to expect, and how to make the most of your visit.
Dora Ochoa has nearly 15 years experience as a spa owner. Through her Body Sugaring USA Day Spa, she handles the most personal aspects of grooming for both women and men. “The most important thing to know is that your spa professional should be well trained and have experience in delicate areas,” she says. “Also, do not be embarrassed to ask us anything. I have heard and seen just about everything and I probably have a solution to address your concerns.” Dora says for her personal practice, discretion and personal, prompt attention is key. “When people come to see me, they are the only appointment I have at that time slot. I offer them a very discreet setting, so even when they are having work done in the bikini line area, they are well-covered and made to feel at ease. The bottom line is that every client should be treated with the utmost respect.”

Experience Meets Excellence— Dr. Elizabeth Dimitri, DO, Dimitri Dermatology & Cosmetic Center

Sophisticated Woman | May 2012
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON
HER LOVE OF EVERYTHING SCIENTIFIC coupled with her fondness for visual stimulation, has proven to be an excellent marriage for Dr. Elizabeth Dimitri, DO of Dimitri Dermatology. “I was always the girl who wanted to make everyone more beautiful. This is what drew me to dermatology,” she says. “With dermatology, I can utilize my scientific brain, and I can literally see the pathology—what I am diagnosing.” Locations of Dimitri Dermatology on both the Northshore and Southshore, have served the medical and cosmetic dermatologic needs of this region for the past decade. With dermatology regularly on the cusp of innovation, Elizabeth and her colleagues recognize the importance of offering those innovations to every community they serve. “In our Covington office, our patients already know how dedicated we are to their medical dermatology needs,” Elizabeth notes. “Our goal is to offer the same standard of medical care, infused with more cosmetic treatment options. We are equally as dedicated to patient-centered care when it comes to the cosmetic branch of dermatology. Add to that the fifty-plus years of combined medical experience which our staff has earned, and our patients win all around.” Standards such as laser treatments, Botox, fillers and Microdermabrasion are offered at what Elizabeth describes as competitive prices. “We truly do give patients what they need as opposed to what they do not need,” she stresses. “For example, we only recommend treatments that will produce the best outcome for our patients. We listen to what patients ultimately wish to accomplish, tell them what we
“For example, we only recommend treatments that will produce the best outcome for our patients. We listen to what patients ultimately wish to accomplish, tell them what we can utilize to accomplish that goal, and give them a realistic scenario of how close we can come
can utilize to accomplish that goal, and give them a realistic scenario of how close we can come to that goal with the tools at our disposal. We tailor each person’s plan to fit their specific needs. We aim for the most efficient process to obtain the optimum outcome.” Patients may see the use of fillers such as Sculptra®, which stimulates tissue to actually grow collagen, in combination with other options like Alpha Hydroxy acids and laser techniques. Elizabeth says no laser platform is out of reach for her team, and the results they achieve with laser therapy are remarkable. “Our laser nurse is an RN (registered nurse) and she has produced superb results, under the supervision of a physician, on patients with everything from Rosacea to simple hair removal.” Soon two more communities will benefit from the Dimitri Dermatology team. Elizabeth and her colleagues have committed their resources to serving the underserved, less populated communities of Bogalusa and Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. “We have patients now who will literally travel hours to have their skin ailment, or their child’s ailment, seen by a physician,” she says. “We are dedicated to bringing these necessary services to these areas so that no one will have to travel 100 miles to see us.” These offices will now be able to accommodate patients with skin cancers, eczema, psoriasis, acne and common childhood skin disorders that need specialized care. “Dermatology is blossoming, and when we merge the medical and cosmetic areas of our practice we create a formula that we are confident about offering to all of our patients—especially those who have not had the benefits of our services until now.”
As a wife and mother, Elizabeth stresses to her family the importance of slathering on the sunscreen, especially during the weekend hiking adventures they embark on regularly. But when she is home, she sheds her doctor’s smock for her Mom frock. “Children are so easily amazed,” she says. “It reminds me to notice the small details in life that I might otherwise miss.” Elizabeth says an experience as a teenager really impacted the way she prioritizes as an adult. “As a teen I volunteered at a local hospital with children who suffered from terminal brain tumors. Seeing those families go through what they did taught me at a young age what was really important in life.” As a result, family is paramount, and helping others is next in line. Because dermatology is an area of medicine with visible results, which can greatly impact the quality of someone’s life, it only feeds into what Elizabeth describes as her “Fairy Godmother” syndrome. “Most problems can be addressed, but they must first be assessed. Teens, for example, should come in at the earliest stages of acne, because we can begin to treat it. Everyone wants to feel and look their best. We can help you do it.” The same holds true for conditions like psoriasis and common skin cancers. “Dermatology is my joie de vivre,” she says. “And every member of our team is here for the same goal—we are all committed to providing the best care and outcome for all of our patients.” To schedule an appointment at the location of Dimitri Dermatology’s Slidell or Covington offices, please call 504-465-8390. Additional locations include Kenner, New Orleans East, Bogalusa and Bay St. Louis, MS. Visit dimitriderm.com for more information.

Coupled with white; greens look clearer, reds look deeper, browns look richer, pinks look fresher and as seen in this month’s fashion picks—blues look crisper. High Notes From the Hats Off Luncheon WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
WITHIN THE LOVELY SETTING of a mild spring day and a group of elegant ladies and gentlemen, Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington played host to our annual Sophisticated Woman Hats Off Luncheon. With a silent auction, an inspirational keynote address and question and answer session by locally, nationally and internationally renowned Chef Susan Spicer, coupled with an informative speech by Jenny Dexter, director of the Hats Off beneficiary and local non-profit, HOYST ( Homeless Outreach for the Youth in St. Tammany), guests were both uplifted and entertained. Sophisticated Woman Associate Publisher, Sarah Cottrell and local radio personality Charles Dowdey of the Lake 94.7, served as mistress and master of ceremony and had the privilege of announcing the 2011 Enterprising Woman of the Year, as voted in by our readers. Georgie Brooks Myrtle of Georgie’s English Kitchen and Garden,
and Sophisticated Woman’s December 2011 Enterprising Woman was duly honored. She was elated as she graciously accepted her award from Sarah. Congratulations Georgie! Sophisticated Woman fashion editor, Patty Beal, was the official judge of our yearly hat contest. This year Ellen La Roca was awarded Most Interesting hat, while former Sophisticated Woman Enterprising Woman from January 2012, Grace Comeaux-Piro won for Most Beautiful hat. Keynote speaker, Chef Susan Spicer, was available before the luncheon to mingle with guests and sign copies of her book, Crescent City Cooking:Unforgettable Recipes From Susan Spicer’s New Orleans. As is the case every year, net proceeds from this event benefit a local non-profit. This year, thanks to many generous sponsors, donors, luncheon attendees and the hard work of the dedicated staff of Sophisticated Woman as well as volunteers from HOYST, Hats Off 2012 was a great success.

Hollywood loves the HydraFacial™ and now, this amazing treatment of the stars is available at Doctors Medical Center, LLC. Celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Adrienne Maloof, Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Winslet and Amy Poehler use the HydraFacial™. Now Marie Osmond of “Donnie and Marie” can be added to the list! In a recent interview with Prevention Magazine, Marie was asked to share her skin secrets, and she said; “I’ve had a HydraFacial™, which is a non-laser skin resurfacing. I had a second procedure, which was done with infrared light; it tightens the skin and stimulates collagen to make your face look more toned. And I use a lot of sunscreen.” There are so many treatments on the market, yet Hollywood doctors such as Dr. Paul Nassif, Dr. Harold Lancer and Dr. Zein Obagi are relying on the HydraFacial™ to get the results they want. The HydraFacial™ treatment has been designed to nourish and moisturize the skin, leaving it soft, supple and hydrated—the perfect defense against winter dryness. The HydraFacial™ combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration all in one quick, non-invasive treatment. It is truly beneficial for everyone, with serums that specifically target skin issues including sun damage, blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged pores, brown spots, uneven skin tone and fine lines and wrinkles. To find out how to get this Hollywood treatment in the New Orleans area, please contact Erin from Doctors Medical Center, LLC at (985) 288-4181.

WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
WHILE WE ALL hope this year’s hurricane season is an uneventful one, I encourage all citizens to prepare now. Making a family emergency plan and an evacuation plan is very important for your family’s safety. Sometimes, citizens may be asked to evacuate should a storm head our way. Storm preparation is a responsibility we all share, and we need to take a few moments to make sure everyone is ready. We will continue to communicate with you about potentially dangerous storms and necessary evacuations. We will use www.stpgov.org, the St. Tammany Parish Facebook page, Access St. Tammany Channel 10 and all other resources to keep the citizens of St. Tammany Parish informed and aware. If you do
evacuate, please monitor www.stpgov.org wherever your location for up to date information on conditions and reentry. WWL radio 870 AM will have a broadcast center in our headquarters of Emergency Operations. Please take the time to discuss preparations and evacuation plans, should the need arise. Last minute preparations are always difficult. Take time to include your pets, relatives and any friends or relatives who are medically dependent or may need assistance with their plans. Review this plan with your family. The time you spend now can save lives of loved ones later. Thank you for joining with us as we prepare for hurricane season.

Go Green—Save Some Green
32
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
“APRIL SHOWERS BRING May flowers!” We know this is especially true in sunny and warm Ponchatoula. Planting shrubs and flowers helps create a healthy atmosphere and builds a nurturing environment for other living creatures, but there are other small actions besides gardening you can take toward leading a greener life and maintaining and sustaining our planet Earth. By turning off the water while brushing your teeth and even while soaping up in the shower, you not only cut down on water usage, but save on household expenses. You can stop junk mail and cut down on wasteful paper production and disposal by contacting the Direct Marketing Association at www.dmaconconsumers.org.
Blowing out your refrigerator coils at least twice a year will save energy consumption. Turning down your water heater to 130 degrees will do the same. Do you know your water heater accounts for nearly 20 percent of the energy used in your home? These are just a few ideas for living a greener life and saving your hard-earned dollars at the same time. It doesn’t necessarily take a horticultural expert to cultivate a colorful, bountiful yard, nor does it take a lot of time or effort to live green. By making small changes, Ponchatoula can be a healthier community, and you’ll be able to concentrate on cultivating your garden instead of paying outlandish utility bills.

On the Cusp of Growth
WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
WE CONSTANTLY hear about our country’s debt and deficit, but we don’t hear enough about the importance of growth. With even three percent growth in the GDP, increased federal tax revenues could create a huge difference at the federal level. Taking it to the local and statewide level, our Northshore Legislative Alliance, the partnership among the East and West Chambers and Northshore Business Council, recently partnered with the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation to host a luncheon featuring Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Steven Moret. Moret took office along with Governor Jindal in 2007. The national recession had just begun, yet the new administration set audacious goals to make Louisiana a place of opportunity. They focused on key areas including workforce development and cultivating existing business and industry. They did not let the perception
of our state and the fact that we were at the bottom of many economic indicator lists hold them back. During the luncheon, Moret gave several examples of business development lists such as Forbes, where Louisiana’s rankings have gone up an average of 20 spots in the last four years! It was incredible to hear that, despite the bad economic news coming out of Washington. According to Moret, Louisiana is the next economic powerhouse of the south. We still have work to do. There is actually even more work because of the results. Now, more site selectors are here on behalf of businesses looking to relocate or expand! Our Chamber will work with our legislators and parish officials to ensure continued positive results and job creation, and as the voice of business to achieve the growth so important to our parish, state and country’s well-being.

Covington Competes for State Title
WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER,
I AM PROUD TO announce that the City of Covington was recently declared a district winner of the 2012 Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s Annual Cleanest City Contest. I am extremely grateful to all those who worked so hard to make this happen. In addition to the citizens who cleaned up their own properties, the Covington Garden Club, Keep Covington Beautiful and the city departments labored alongside each other to clean up streets, restore signage and remove trash as well as much more. The City of Covington will now advance to the state
competition. Judging will take place on Wednesday, May 9, at 8 a.m. Covington will compete against other district winners within our same population range (4,500 to 9,499). Kyle Martin, co-chair of the Covington Garden Club, says that the state competition will hold our City to even higher standards. Martin says, in addition to general cleanliness, the judges will also be looking for edged sidewalks, manicured lawns and colorful flowers on display. With the continued help of the community, I’m sure we’ll be strong competitors in the state finals.

East St. Tammany Launches New Website
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
IN BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS, the role of information technology through the use and management of information with the assistance of computer based techniques and tools, is very vital in the automation process. The web has implicated the preservation, distribution as well as the accumulation of organizational data or information. The Chamber has stepped up to the challenge and engaged in “tech smart” options for membership retention and growth. Providing additional tech services to our members and the community, saves time, which we all relate to money. One of the new exciting links we are kicking off with the new East St. Tammany Chamber website is ChamberED, including You Tube videos on business
tips, an online book club and roundtable conversations on business topics. Coming on June 19, the Technology Committee is hosting a TECH SMART CONFERENCE to help your employees be tech savvy. This conference is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Northshore Harbor Center. Three tracks are available to all registrants with nine topics to choose from including: Is Social Technology Right for MY Business? The cost for this all day event is only $59.99 for the first 100 registrants. The Committee has provided for excellent speakers and this workshop will help your business get “Tech Smart.” For more information, please check out our website at www.estchamber.com or call us at 985-643-5678.

building remains the same, the seating capacity has increased due to a redesign of the floor plan. The new auditorium will accommodate a standing crowd of 1,201, fixed row seating of 752 and table seating of 595. Total cost of the construction was $8 million, with approximately $7 million funded by FEMA and the balance paid by the City of Slidell. There are a few people I would like to thank; Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects of New Orleans for designing the facility, VCC LLC for overseeing the construction and Stuart Consulting Group for serving as the Program Manager. I would also like to thank former Mayor Ben Morris, whose tireless efforts and dedication to the City of Slidell secured the funding from FEMA for the Slidell Municipal Auditorium.

WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN,
I AM PLEASED TO announce that the City of Slidell recently held the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. The city’s Friends of the Arts organization kicked off the opening with the “Arts, Camera, Action!” gala. This grand opening of the auditorium, as well as the recent openings of the Slidell Senior Center and the Rufus Viner Community Center, marks a milestone in the city’s recovery efforts. The auditorium is the last of all the city buildings destroyed by, and subsequently repaired following, Hurricane Katrina. The new 22,166 square foot, two story facility replaces the original auditorium, which was built in 1953 and demolished in 2010 after sustaining heavy damage during the hurricane. Though the footprint of the new
