Living in the Moment

MOTHER'S DAY IS

upon us—a time which

makes many women feel loved and appreciated. However, it’s a bittersweet day for me. It’s been 21 years since my mother died of lung cancer at the early age of 53. I was an only child and very close to

her. Every year is a constant reminder of the things her death stole from my past and my future. I had my own child without a mom for help and guidance and have had to rely on myself for more than I ever thought possible. Although my heart is heavy, I believe having my daughter was my saving grace and can’t imagine my life without her in it. As I go through the different phases of my life with my daughter, it reminds me of the things I once shared with my mother and that brings peace back into my life. This month our Enterprising Woman Taylor Alfonso also shares her story of the special bond she has with her mother and her daughter. As a child she watched her mother successfully run her own business, setting an example for Taylor to become a headstrong and heartstrong entrepreneur. Her

Cleanse Medspa: A Better Version of You THERE’S A FRESH, new place in Mandeville to rejuvenate. New Orleans native Dana Naccari opened Cleanse Medspa less than six months ago and it’s already taken off, giving clients state-of-the-art procedures and happy faces. While the facility is new, it’s Dana’s experience that sets her apart. “I trained with a leader in medical esthetics and worked with highly renowned doctors and plastic surgeons here for 13 years.” Top of mind for Dana while designing her new environment was comfort. “I wanted the spa to be inviting , so I designed it to look like my home. It’s warm and soothing, not like a doctor’s office. My staff makes everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. Two popular offerings are HydraFacials and LED Light Therapy which is definitely the most relaxing.” The latter treatment stimulates collagen resulting in smaller pores and less wrinkles, lightens brown spots and melasma, and kills bacteria that causes acne. Because best results come from regular skin care, Dana created the Cleanse Medspa membership program. “I want to be affordable. People go to the gym regularly to take care of their body and they need to take care of their face every day too. It shouldn’t be priced like a luxury, it should just feel like one. We have four packages for almost everyone’s budget.” All membership levels include unlimited LED Light Therapy, discounted Botox and discounts on all other services. Another popular service is the Non-surgical Facelift/Skin Tightening. Microcurrent technology stimulates muscles in the face and neck and around the eye for a lifted, firmer appearance. Dana says the results are amazing, “It’s great to do before a special event because the results are immediate. And you can get longer lasting results with consecutive treatments in as little as five weeks.” Natural looking results are most important to Dana and her staff. “Our procedures stimulate your own natural collagen and with Botox no one leaves looking pulled or frozen. We help our clients walk out looking like a fresher, younger version of themselves.” Cleanse Medspa is located at 1011 N. Causeway Blvd., Unit 26 in Mandeville. Eleven Eleven Wellness Solutions: Healing Energy IN NUMEROLOGY, THE number 1111 is often considered to be a wake-up call and indicates a connection with the angelic realm, God, or Source Energy that determines your ability to manifest your desires and achieve your full potential. It signifies being on the verge of transformation and transition. Ashlie Boteler founded Eleven Eleven Wellness Solutions in 2019 with the intent of being a catalytic portal to guide individuals towards identifying and reaching the next level in their purpose. Ashlie has always had a passion for the human condition. For 16 years, her career has been helping others achieve their goals and reach for a greater version of themselves. From personal training, health/nutrition coaching, life coaching, and energy healing, she has assisted others on their journeys to betterment in all areas. No matter the goal, Ashlie realized that the obstacles that hindered her clients’ true potential were because of undone inner work healing. The body achieves what the mind believes, so if the mind-work has not been done, the outward goals will only go so far before failing. Ashlie is the product of this premise and a fan of self-development. She knew that if she were to impact clients that she would need to personify this lesson. In 2016, she began seeing a holistic healer to destroy her own limiting beliefs. Some things came up that she didn’t realize were holding her back in her relationships, career and self-esteem. She allowed herself to release those beliefs so she could excel. In 2018 Ashlie hired a life coach and for seven months did inner work and formed new beliefs launching new ideas, providing clarity in all areas of her life and even helping her financially. From the immense success she was having, she broadened her credentials from a certified personal trainer/wellness coach to a certified life coach and Usui Reiki practitioner, aiding others in their own healing work and transformations. In her office, she works with women who want to get unstuck and find clarity in their business, life and relationships. She helps them feel like they are living their life on purpose and learn to feel confident in asking for what they want. Coming from a holistic approach, her services highlight the fact that all change comes from within self. Initially, she consults with clients to discuss the value her guidance will give in reaching their goals. She teaches how to quiet the mind, hear from spirit, and act using tools that work best with one-on-one coaching, group sessions, and in-person or distance reiki. Eleven Eleven Wellness Solutions is located at 1795 W. Causeway Approach, Suite 102 in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-236-1111 or visit www.ElevenElevenWellnessSolutions.com 8

Salon 51: Where Service Meets Style EXPERIENCE MATTERS AND Kristie Raborn of Salon 51 in Hammond has it. Kristie is a native of Hattiesburg, but after 30 years in Tangipahoa she feels right at home. She considers each client special, personally welcoming everyone through the door. Kristie began in the business 22 years ago with milestones in 2005 when she bought Salon 51, and again in 2011 when she built her new building. The award-winning salon, which won Northshore’s Best in Tangipahoa for both Best Hair Salon and Best Day Spa, is home to a great variety of services. Along with hair care and styling including updos, keratin and extensions, they also offer massages, waxing, facials, microblading, lashes and makeup. Kristie laughingly adds, “We even still do perms!” Because Salon 51 can also do their magic on location, they are a favorite for weddings, proms, homecomings, sorority socials and other special events. “We can set up almost anywhere and roll with it,” says Kristie. “We’ve done people’s hair and makeup in homes and up to the highest end event centers.” Salon 51 also exclusively provides services for The Oaks on 22 Wedding and Event Center in Ponchatoula. Since Kristie has made the surroundings so comfortable and inviting, many people still choose to prepare for their big event at the salon. “If a group wants to come in and have a pre-party while we prepare them for the main event, they have access to our kitchen. They can bring in food and drinks for the bridal party. And my husband Chuck and daughter Charlee will come in and be the hospitality makers setting up punch, sandwiches and fruit for the group.” Kristie humbly praises her staff who range from their 20s to their 60s. Their experience provides a range of expertise in different styles that can satisfy clients’ every wish. “I have to give them so much credit. I couldn’t do this without them.” What are their summer favorites? Kristie says keratin treatments are helpful for the hot, humid months, and because they offer extensions, clients don’t have to go out of the area for that specialized service. “And our younger girls are great at doing balayage, a French coloring technique similar to ombre where the color is applied freehand.” Salon 51’s professionally trained massage therapists offer standard services such as deep-tissue massage, specialty treatments such as pre-natal massages and sugar scrubs. No matter what the service, Kristie invites everyone to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of her salon where she says clients will feel as though they are being welcomed into her living room. Salon 51 is located at 41601 Veterans Ave., Suite #100 in Hammond. Visit facebook.com/SALON-51-163679646606/ or call 985-419-2727 for more information. 10 Sophisticated Woman | May 2019

Bella Style Salon: Modern Style In Historic Slidell JEN BELLAU BAUDIER has “Bella” in her name and seems destined to be right where she is—in the business of beauty. Jen has been in the industry since she was 13 years old and opened Bella Style Salon in 2009. Jen says, “I decided to start my own place so I could take care of my guests with a high level of customer service. I opened in a 900 square foot space and stayed there for six years before making the decision to purchase a beautiful 100 year-old historic building in the preservation district of Slidell.” The Carey Street location in Olde Town Slidell has prospered since its 2015 debut and offers a full range of services including haircuts, color and style, makeup, manicures and pedicures, hair removal services, lash treatments, facials and spray tans. ‘Shaped by beauty. Refined by style,’ is the chic salon’s motto. Jen explains, “At Bella Style our commitment to excellence and service leaves our guests with the ultimate beauty experience. Our team's participation in continuing education arms us with the latest trends and innovations in haircuts, beauty, hair color and fashion. Our exclusive alignment with Aveda allows the guest to maintain their look with a premier line of products that are both great for them and the environment.” Jen’s commitment has been rewarded for three years running with recognition in the elite Salon Today 200 for top performance and growth by this national industry publication. Their loyal customers agree with reviews such as, “Best salon experience I’ve ever had. Things were super professional, clean and everyone was so kind. I’ll definitely be returning for any of my hair needs!” Jen recently retired from behind the chair after 15 years and became fully focused on running all aspects of the salon to make Bella Style exceed all expectations. She is comfortable leaving the styling to her many talented hair professionals, makeup artists, estheticians and customer experience team members. Her staff shares her vision of delivering exceptional service and is rigorously trained in the Aveda system which Jen says is very structured and detailed. “Aveda is a very disciplined company in the way they train their people. They provoke us to think about the smallest details to please our guests.” And the Bella Style artists work in-studio and out. On location services are also offered for weddings and special events. “On the day of your wedding or special event, we’ll come to you with everything needed to make you look and feel your best. We cater specifically to you and provide the luxury of getting ready in your own space without any additional stress." Bella Style Salon is located at 2265 Carey Street in Slidell. Payable-On-Death Accounts And Your Estate Plan WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET

PROBATE ASSETS ARE

assets that must go

through a succession for purposes of re-titling: transferring title/ownership from a deceased owner to the rightful beneficiary. The most familiar probate assets include real estate and vehicles. However, some assets like retirement accounts, some annuities, and life insurance are non-probate assets, meaning those assets typically do not go through succession. Instead, non-probate assets are paid via a contract to a “designated beneficiary.” Customarily, bank accounts are also considered probate assets that must go through succession to correctly update ownership of remaining funds on deposit for someone who has passed. A Louisiana statute, La R.S. 6:314, permits a depositor to turn a probate asset into a “designated beneficiary” type of asset, where a beneficiary can access funds on deposit without having to first formally open succession. The Louisiana statute permits a depositor to provide an affidavit, or an act executed with a bank officer to designate named beneficiaries of remaining funds at the depositor's death. The bank may conclusively rely on the affidavit or act for disbursement of the funds. The bank will update the name of the account as a “payable-ondeath to” account. Upon the bank’s receipt of the death certificate, the bank releases the depositor’s funds to the named beneficiary. In practice, we see widowed clients that want to provide an easier route for children to access funds and pay for final and ongoing expenses without having to first open succession. In addition, clients with limited assets try to plan so their beneficiaries

may forego a formal succession process. Both cases lend to favorable circumstances for considering a payable-on-death account. Consider if the Louisiana “POD” statute might coordinate with your estate planning needs and intentions.

Rhizomes and Tubers and Bulbs – Oh My! WRITTEN BY SUSIE LATHAM ANDRES, ST. TAMMANY MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION

MANY GARDENERS ENJOY planting a variety of rhizomes, tubers and bulbs throughout the year. Collectively all of these plants are considered “bulbous.” Spring and summer bulbous ornamental plants are very popular in the South and are among the easiest flowers to grow successfully. Favorites include iris, amaryllis, caladiums, gladiolus, gingers, lily, spider lily and daylily. Most of these are considered perennials, meaning they will rebloom year after year. Rhizomes – also called rootstocks – are thickened stems that grow horizontally as they travel on or just below the soil surface and send stems above ground. Tubers are underground stems that store food. A true bulb is a complete or nearly complete miniature of a plant encased in fleshy, modified leaves called scales which contain food reserves. Most bulbous plants like at least six or more hours of direct sunlight. Adequate drainage is critical as these plants do not like wet feet, although some (especially lilies) will tolerate somewhat moister conditions. Specific information on planting times, growing conditions, and other considerations is available on the LSU AgCenter website (lsuagcenter.com). Once the blooms have faded, don’t trim back the foliage immediately. Bulbous plants use the foliage to produce food which is stored for growth next season. Leave the foliage attached until it begins to yellow, then cut and toss it into your compost pile. Some bulbous plants can remain in the garden while dormant over the winter but others do best when dug up and stored in a cool, dry place. If the plants are getting crowded, divide them and spread them across your garden or pass along to neighbors; do this while plants are dormant in early spring. With proper planting and minimal attention these herbaceous perennials will be a great addition to your garden for years to come. Happy gardening!

in the area that is reminiscent of Magazine Street. Little does young Taylor know that the building she beholds right across the street will, in 20 years, be home to her own budding boutique.

NOW, TAYLOR ALFONSO

sits in the chic surroundings of her Stella and Grace

Boutique recounting her journey so far. She points through the Robert Street display window, “I grew up right there watching my mom run her shop. She’s the smartest businesswoman I know and I learned how to treat customers from her. She was made to be her own boss and I knew I wanted the same thing.” Amidst the high ceilings and large glass windows that make for a bright, open showplace where colorful fashions pop against dark walls, Taylor continues, “I knew I wanted to be in Olde Town, on this corner, in this building.” The timing was right as the previous tenant retired just as Taylor began the endeavor of her dreams. But following that road wouldn’t be easy. Taylor graduated from Loyola in Political Science and was considering law school when she was diagnosed with a heart condition. “My doctor said if I wanted to have children, I needed to do so as soon as possible.” Taylor and longtime boyfriend Bradley Alfonso accelerated their wedding plans to start their family. Taylor’s face lights up as she describes daughter Stella Grace for whom the shop is named. “She has the self-confidence at three that many people never have. She puts outfits together, insists on picking out her own clothes – and she’s good! She’s spunky and sassy and loves to chase and catch the chickens on our farm.” If Stella Grace is strong and independent, the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. Taylor’s not afraid to be different. “When I wanted the shop to have black walls, my mom wasn’t convinced but I had a clear vision and it worked.” Her husband, who owns Alfonso’s Pharmacy, also knows Taylor’s sense of self and fearlessness. “When I went shopping for my wedding dress, Bradley only asked that it be white. But the moment I saw the pink dress in the store, I had to have it. All he could do was shake his head as I walked down the aisle. He also wasn’t thrilled when I jumped in and swam with the lemon sharks on our honeymoon in Bora Bora, but I just had to do it.” Family has taught Taylor to be true to herself. She appreciates her mother’s example and the work ethic that both parents instilled in her. “My dad always said, ‘What you put in is what you get out,’ and that has served me in my business and in my life.” When Taylor’s first child, son Brady, was diagnosed with autism, she put everything else on hold, determined to find help for him. “It took a year to get him in the stem cell treatment program at Duke University but we’ve seen a big change. He’s blossoming now.” With Brady’s condition improving, Taylor felt the time was right to open Stella and Grace but she knew she’d need help. Bradley works long hours at the pharmacy and Taylor was dedicated to being a hands-on owner. She is grateful for her “village” of five generations of family that all agreed to help with the kids so she could devote the necessary time to the business and to her mom who also helps her every day in the shop. “My customers come to me for the personal attention I give them. I want them to be comfortable, feel good and look great.” Taylor says clothes have always mattered to her and that she remembers life events by what she was wearing. “Clothes are art. Your clothes tell your story. When I go to market I have certain customers in mind and I buy for them. With the help of my family, I’m able to live and breathe this store and that comes through to my clients.” In the six months since Stella and Grace opened, Taylor has already expanded into the next building and looks forward to more growth. “In five years I hope this place is booming. I hope my son is talking more and that my family is happy.” And in 20 years, a grown-up Stella Grace may find herself standing on the threshold of the store that bears her name, and like Taylor before her, be ready to continue the adventure her mother began. Stella & Grace Boutique is located at 2260 Carey Street in Slidell. For more information please visit shopstellagrace.com or call 985-265-4412. Sophisticated Woman | May 2019 25

CYPRESS POINTE HOSPITAL is an award-winning, destination hospital located just east of Hammond offering a

culture of treating patients as if they were family members. State-of-the-art technology is offered throughout the 63,000 square foot facility that houses specialties in Bariatrics, Cardiology, ENT, Gastrointestinal, General Surgery, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Occupational Health, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Podiatry, Urology and more. Physician driven and patient centric, Cypress Pointe is committed to excellence and growth. Currently under construction, adjacent to the hospital is a new, two-story, state of the art, class A, medical office and outpatient building with covered patient drop off and pick up. The building is approximately 35,000 square feet and connects to Cypress Pointe Hospital with completion scheduled for December of 2019. The project offers custom designed suites to meet each tenant’s specific need with generous allowances allocated towards the design and construction of the tenant improvements.

A Master Plan Glenda Dobson, president and chief executive officer stated, “Currently, the physicians working at Cypress Pointe Hospital have offices all over the community. The medical office building will offer them closer accessibility next to the hospital so they can provide comprehensive patient care in one location.” Eighty percent of the building is currently leased, with an urgent care and a retail pharmacy as anchors to the first floor. Other build-outs are Ortho-spine and Orthopedic suites with Cypress Pointe Pain Management on the second floor. There is also interest in Physical Therapy and Behavioral Health for suites in the complex. “As we have more physicians wanting office space in Hammond, we will have space available for them on our Cypress campus.” said Dobson. “There is room on the property to build another building if there is a need for additional office space in the future.” The medical office building is the first step of the overall master plan as it will strategically benefit the hospital by providing a convenient one-stop shop for physicians and patients. The Cypress Pointe master plan details even more growth in the future including a major name hotel that will be open to the public. The facility will fill a need in an area that has two sports parks, an airport, and Interstate 12 nearby and will also provide a destination for patients’ families to stay overnight if they are from out of town.

Other Amenities Additional master plan elements have mixed use developments incorporated into the hospital campus footprint with unique amenities targeted specifically to Cypress clientele. Restaurants will be needed to support the hotel guests and other residential growth in the area. A 300-unit apartment complex and Providence Ridge, offering single-family movein-ready homes, have also been developed east of the hospital campus. “We want to make this an all-encompassing medical complex,” said Dr. Chad Domangue, Member Manager of Cypress Pointe Hospital and Board-Certified Neurologist and Pain Management Specialist.

For more information on leasing space, call Brandon McFarren at 850-607-6069, ext. 106 or bmcfarren@catalysthre.com or contact Glenda Dobson at Cypress Pointe Hospital, gdobson@cpsh.org. Sophisticated Woman | May 2019 27

could use more energy

energy levels are lower than ever before (lack of sleep, chronic stress, infections, inflammation, hypothyroidism, diet, etc.), but another possible cause for the increase in fatigue is toxicity. Our environment is loaded with substances that can be harmful, which is why the field of toxicology is quite massive. There’s a magnitude of ways environmental toxins can lead to fatigue: toxins can interfere with nutrient absorption, suppress the immune system, inhibit mitochondria, disrupt hormone balance and can cause direct damage to the brain, liver, kidneys, and digestive tract. Common exposures include the food supply, personal care products, housing, environment and water. One common toxin is plastic. There are several compounds in plastic making it dangerous, including BPA and phthalates. Many BPA free plastics contain BPS or BPF, which may actually be worse than BPA. The American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement expressing concerns about chemicals from plastic leaching into food and harming children. Avoiding plastic is one great way to start decreasing your overall toxic load. Other than avoidance, which can sometimes be difficult, a yearly or quarterly detox can be incredibly helpful to lower the total body burden of these chemicals. When done properly, a detox may help with many symptoms including fatigue, joint pain, irritability, skin health, constipation, poor concentration, digestive issues, headaches and more. If you think toxic exposure might be part of what is keeping your energy low, consider talking with a doctor who is trained in environmental medicine. There are ways to help rid your body of the harmful things to which we are unknowingly exposed.

Susan Iseman Cramond: Double Agent Woman WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST

HELPING PEOPLE IS what she does. Whether it’s settling clients into a new house or sending them off on the get-away of a lifetime, Susan Iseman Cramond has the connections to make their dreams come true at home and far away. Susan is both a real estate agent with K2 Realty and the owner of her own travel agency, Create a Trip, LLC. “The common denominators are personal service and knowledge of the industries,” says the well-travelled Pennsylvania native. “K2 isn’t a big box realtor, we’re a boutique agency with so many local connections. And on the travel side, I’m right here for the local clients I assist - a person with real experience they can see and talk to.” Susan moved to Louisiana 18 years ago and landed a job in travel due to her proficiency on the computer. Her sister worked for Delta so the love of travel ran in the family. Susan has been all over the world including Italy, Scotland, Ireland, England, the Caribbean and more. For clients who want a getaway but don’t have a particular destination in mind she suggests a cruise. “It’s all there for you on a cruise so you can just relax and enjoy. An Alaska cruise is my favorite. I’m always ready to go back for the scenery and the wildlife. European river cruises are also very popular. You can be in a different city every day and see three to four countries.” With the growing popularity of internet booking sites, Susan is often asked if travel agents are a thing of the past. “Not at all – we’re coming back. Many people call because the web is so overwhelming, and we have the experience to sort it out for them. Also, it’s hard to know what you’re actually getting. What’s represented on the internet isn’t always the reality once you get there. I specialize in destination weddings, honeymoons and family reunions and many people need the help of an experienced professional in order to bring those big, all-important events together perfectly.” What are the most sought-after destinations? Susan says Sandals continues to be a hot ticket. “And Hawaii is less expensive than you’d think. As an agent, I can use wholesalers to keep flight and accommodation prices down.” Along with her successful travel business, Susan speaks fondly of her 20-year marriage to husband Gary and their two teenaged daughters, Abby and Sophie. Home life also includes artistic passions. Susan has painted for decades favoring realistic, fun and whimsical New Orleans themes. And her clothing designs range from practical to charitable. Susan designed Create A Trip Fun Fashions which features palazzo-style pants that don’t wrinkle, so they are great for traveling. And as the Dress a Girl Around the World Louisiana Ambassador, she shares her creative gifts with those less fortunate by crafting homemade dresses that are distributed in other countries through mission trips. 34 Sophisticated Woman | May 2019

Not one to stand still, Susan ventured out to add real estate agent to her list of accomplishments. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since high school and seven years ago, I just went out and did it. I help buyers, especially first-timers, to do their homework. We fill out worksheets to sort out all their options. It’s a huge step so the more educated they are the better the result.” And results are Susan’s bottom line. “In both the travel agent business and the real estate business, success is defined by how the client feels at the end of the transaction. It’s their reaction when we finalize their home sale or when they get home from their trip and tell me how it went.” And customers are quick to sing her praises. “Thanks for all your help with our amazing trip to Italy!! Everything was seamless and perfect thanks to you!” and “If there’s an award for an agent who is diligent, patient, thorough, amiable, and goes above and beyond the call of duty, it would go to Susan Cramond. She didn’t hesitate at our list of demands. She researched…and was able to find us everything we wanted and we could not be any happier with the outcome of all her hard work.” Susan says she is happy to do double agent duty along with enjoying her family and charity work. “The seasonality of real estate and travel balance each other out and feed off each other. Real estate customers come back to plan a trip, and travel clients come back to list their houses. It all comes full circle.” For more information, call 504-812-2166 or email createatrip@gmail.com . It may need to be repeated every four to six months. However, in some patients, one treatment can break the cycle of bruxism for a year or more. If left untreated, TMD can cause breakdown of the joint and more permanent damage.

mayor's note

Mandeville Sets Sail for the Future WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

THE CITY OF MANDEVILLE is proud to announce that the Port Marigny Project has been settled and the City is looking forward to a beautiful development enhancing our lakefront landscape. The Port Marigny permit was originally filed in our Planning Department in 2015 and went through two years of public meetings with our Planning and Zoning Commission prior to being recommended to the City Council. After many meetings, the City Council identified areas of concern that the owners addressed, and the project was returned to Planning and Zoning for review and recommendation; however, the City Council eventually voted the project down. It then ended up in federal litigation for two more years. Recently, the City Council passed an ordinance to provide mixed uses for property at lower density levels. The City was then able to negotiate a settlement that will provide a future development that will deliver appealing architecture and a lifestyle for which our citizens can be proud. The City of Mandeville was also recently recognized at a St. Tammany Parish Council Meeting for garnering several awards, including “One of the Top 100 Places to Live” by Relocate America, “Tree City USA” by The Arbor Foundation, “Safest City in the State” by SafeHome.org, “One of the Best Places to Retire” by Niche and “Best Place to Escape in Louisiana” by Expedia. According to Expedia, “Louisiana is made for slowing down life to a drawl. Located on the placid shores of Lake Pontchartrain, Mandeville is the right setting for sailing off into the sunset." We are blessed to live in a city filled with history and resources that can be enjoyed by all. For more information, call 985-626-3144 or visit cityofmandeville.com.

Northshore Human Society GiveNOLA Day

A Full-Service Veterinary Hospital Including:

WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NORTHSHORE HUMANE SOCIETY

ON TUESDAY, MAY 7,

Northshore Humane

Society will participate in another GiveNOLA Day, a day that has raised over $250,000 for the no-kill, nonprofit animal rescue and community veterinary clinic. Hosted by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, GiveNOLA Day is the community's one-day, online giving event to inspire people to give generously to the nonprofit organizations that are making our region stronger. Last year was Northshore Humane Society’s best year! Out of 700+ participating charities from across the state, NHS was among the top three

ÂŽ

in donations raised. Scott Bernier, CEO of NHS, stated, “GiveNOLA Day has become a significant fundraiser for our rescue having a direct, positive impact on our lifesaving work. We’re hoping for another successful year! Many dogs, like Winnie, come to Northshore Humane Society suffering from heartworm disease, a disease if left untreated is always fatal. The treatment is costly, but NHS makes sure every dog with the disease is cured and adopted heartworm free. Donations from GiveNOLA Day help to find lifesaving treatments for dogs just like Winnie. Bernier urges you to donate to your favorite charity on this day. Your donation on May 7th (midnight to midnight) will not only directly benefit the charity of your choice, but every dollar raised during that designated time will also be increased with additional "lagniappe" dollars.

A PARADE OF empowered women smartly outfitted from head to toe, inspiring speakers with moving stories, and a bounty of bid-worthy auction items benefitting a supportive sisterhood all united at Sophisticated Woman’s Hats Off Luncheon, held on April 5 at Vintage Court in Covington. Ingrid Rinck, owner of Sensible Meals, was voted 2018 Enterprising Woman of the Year by readers’ popular vote. Runners up were Missy Hymel of Accelerated Hand Solutions and Celeste Hart of Creating U Academy. Lisa McKenzie, Founder and President of You Night and Ooh La Bra, delivered the keynote address sharing the life-changing experience that You Night provides for women facing life beyond cancer. Gina Pausina Cherry offered a poignant testimonial for You Night detailing her personal challenges and the uplifting support that she received from the community of survivors, and Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jules A. Walters explained the importance of treating the whole patient when going through breast reconstruction after cancer treatment. A runway show presented the 2018 Enterprising Women paired with the You Night ladies as they proudly sashayed down the aisle. Proceeds from the silent auction went to You Night. The day’s festivities culminated in a colorful balloon release celebrating the inspiring life of Sophisticated Woman Magazine’s founder Joanne Gallinghouse.
