THE REALITY THAT you are soon to have a Signature _____________________________________ teenager is one that causes a blend of emotions and questions. Am I really that old? Date ________________________________________ How did this happen? And yes, the old cliché, “Enjoy them while they are young, because the time will fly by,” is true. It also brings you back to those years which were filled with new discoveries of independence, yet the struggles you begin to face as life turns from childhood merriment, to teen angst. Remember the first time you felt the thrill of a chance at victory, and then despite your best effort, realized the disappointment of defeat? What about the first time you felt the sting of rejection? There is no way I would want to go back. Would you? November 7 will catapult our family into the teen scene and all that follows with it. Are we ready? Who knows? Like every other phase of life, we will learn as we go, make our mistakes and hope not to repeat them. But mostly, I hope that we will try to put ourselves back into that time when we had the same experiences and feelings and try to underColors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. stand what our teen is going through. Tweens take center stage in this issue, as our Enterprising Woman caters specifically to their needs. And this month is National Healthy Skin month, so it is a great time to introduce your teens and tweens to a life long routine. Behind the Scenes with Kerry Parsons KERRY LEBRETON PARSONS has poured all of her time into opening her new store, Blossom Girl Tween Gifts and Accessories. Recently, she was able to take a day off to enjoy pampering and relaxation during her Enterprising Woman photo shoot. Her day started at Paris Parker Salon in Mandeville, where she was treated to hair and make-up by the very talented stylist Audra Malnar-Brown. Embrace Your Inner Girl: Kerry LeBreton Parsons— Blossom Girl Tween Gifts & Accessories

Sophisticated Woman | November 2011
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON
KERRY LEBRETON PARSONS loves children. But for Kerry, adolescent girls hold a special place in her heart. “No matter their age, I love them all. I have a passion for children, but especially for girls. I want them to have the knowledge I wish I would have had when I was growing up. I want all of them to know that whoever they are is okay. I want to empower them to be themselves.” This passion for mentoring young girls is how Blossom Girl Tween Gifts and Accessories came to life. For Kerry, her “tween” (or adolescent) years were not the easiest. Her recollection of those critical formative years is one of insecurities fueled by the difficulties of peer pressure and the struggle to fit in. However, like most young women, Kerry discovered and embraced her girlhood. As an adult, she graduated from the Aveda Institute as a makeup artist and esthetician. She went on to work for local spas, and then worked for a dermatologist where she strengthened her knowledge of proper skin care. Eventually she became a full-time nanny (to three beautiful kids) where she was able to work with children—her passion—and also indulge the little girl she cared for with her background in makeup artistry. “I would always style her hair and do her makeup,” she recalls. “It was a wonderful time together.” Along the way, Kerry met her husband Chris. Her dream was and still is, to be the voice of understanding for young girls when they need it most. She started to host small spa, diva and makeup parties, and although she was highly successful, had a yearning to offer something more. “We really wanted to build on this concept of nurturing the well-being of young women,” she notes. “We decided to open our store, Blossom Girl, to teach young women about this transitional phase of their life.” Kerry incorporated proper skin care, makeup tips and hair care into the essence of the store. In addition she addressed what every young girl needs to handle her first period—possibly the most crucial rite of passage for a pubescent girl. “I envisioned

like they are spending it on quality items.” between daughters and parents. “Some girls come in with money they have earned independently so I want them to feel like they are spending it on quality items. And for every girl who brings in a good report card, we offer a percentage off discount. There are mothers who will simply call me and ask me to choose something for a gift, because they trust me to do it based on how I have helped them find such great gifts in the past. And gift wrapping is always free,” Kerry says. For Kerry, realizing her dream in her hometown has been a great blessing. “Mandeville is so homey, and no matter how far away you go, people always seem to find their way back,” she says. She and her husband Chris spend much of their time together, planning their future. “I am so grateful to God and to my husband for helping me to achieve this goal. I hope to have my own children within the next few years, and I want this store to be the go-to place for any sort of tween girl issue,” she says. “I hope all parents embrace their children’s style and help them grow into the people they are capable of being.” As for her role, Kerry says, “It is purely genuine. I love the store. I love the girls. Be who you are and if you do nothing else, find your inner girl.” Blossom Girl Tween Gifts and Accessories is located at 22 St. Ann Suite #1 in Mandeville. For more information, contact Kerry at 985-626-6280 or by email at info@blossomgirl.net. You can also visit them on the web at blossomgirl.net.

the store as the place girls and their mothers—or girls and their friends—can come, ask questions, hang out and just feel at home,” she says. “I want to help girls feel that confidence they need to survive in the tween world.” For moms, she wanted to create a place they would enjoy shopping for or with their daughters. Kerry’s mission is to help every young girl be themselves and not worry so much about what others think. “Sometimes I may be able to frame something in a different way than a mother might, because I am young enough to remember these years, but old enough to have gotten through it,” she says. “I can make a connection on their level. We all struggle with wanting to be more like someone else. I want girls to know that they are great just the way they are and to be the best version of themselves—not someone else.” Kerry’s extensive background in skin care coupled with the Good For You Girls skin care line she carries in the store, provide the ideal tools for upcoming skin care and makeup classes. “Skin care is so important at this age,” she notes. “Mothers can come in and buy a foolproof kit equipped with everything they need to start their daughters on the right path to lifelong healthy skin care habits.” The first menstrual cycle is a major transition during the tween years, and the First Period Kit contains everything a young girl needs to feel confident and maintain discretion as they go through it. Whimsy is essential at Blossom Girl, and items like the temporary glitter tattoos, slumber party question kits, room décor and jewelry ensure it is prevalent. They also host Makeover Mania or Spa birthday parties. Accessories like purses and headbands offer something for every taste. Gifts are a cinch to find as Kerry has worked hard to ensure that items are age-appropriate, helping to ease the struggle

JUST 37 MILES NORTH of the bustling Big Easy, lies an idyllic place where three rivers meet. It’s a city where growth and prosperity abound, but small-town charm is unwavering. “Hey y’all”s,” and “How ya doing’s?” are inevitable during any stroll down these sidewalks. From warm and welcoming residents to fantastic dining and entertainment, there are countless reasons to love this southern town. It is beautifully and uniquely Covington. History has left its mark on this nearly 200-year-old city, which also serves as the parish seat. Special care has been taken to ensure the preservation of Covington’s historic homes and buildings. “We want visitors to sense Covington’s exceptionality from the moment they set foot here,” says Mayor Mike Cooper. In that spirit, Mayor Cooper recently announced several plans for downtown revitalization projects, including resurfacing all streets in the historic district. Covington may appear old-world, but it is far from antiquated. Its restaurants rival New Orleans’ most acclaimed dining hotspots. As for the shopping, you may want to bring an empty suitcase to cart home your finds. Boutiques, antique shops and art galleries can be found in abundance. Covington has cultivated an expansive
list of special events. In fact, it’s come to be known for them. From riverside concerts to downtown block parties, there’s something happening almost every week. The “Blues Fest Christmas” holiday concert will take place on November 26 at the Covington Trailhead. The city also caters to art lovers. Every November—November 12 and 13 this year—50,000 visitors from all over the United States flood into Covington for the Three Rivers Art Festival, a two-day juried show of arts and fine crafts. Twice a year, the St. Tammany Art Association hosts an evening of art, music, food and wine at its Spring for Art and Fall for Art events. There’s something to suit every age and interest in Covington. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike or bike the 31-mile Tammany Trace, which begins at the Covington Trailhead, or boat the scenic Bogue Falaya River. Visit the Covington Farmer’s Market—there are two each week—to buy fresh, locally-grown produce. Covington is home to several charming bed and breakfasts, perfect locations for a relaxing weekend retreat or an extended stay. It may not be the big city, but it certainly is big on charm. Make Covington your escape, and you just might want to call it “home.”

No Holiday in The Garden WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK
HOLIDAYS ARE IN SIGHT, but this is no time for a holiday in the garden. It is the time to trim, rake and dig. Bushes, shrubs and even trees should be shaped up for their winter stance. Soon the growing rates will slow way down. Azaleas, forsythia, bridal wreath and fruit trees are among early spring bloomers which should not be trimmed as their flower buds are already set in. Fall shrubs with berries may be pruned now. The loaded branches make great seasonal décor. This is the ideal time to work on all your bulbous plants. Thin out day lilies by digging out the entire root. Fan out the plants and pull the bulb sections (root and all) apart. Find sunny spots to replant and as the attached leaves decay, turn them into the surrounding soil as feed for next year’s plants. Purchase new bulbs for spring and summer and store them in the refrigerator for about a week before planting. Choose well-drained, sunny spots for best results with almost any type of bulb. Most native grasses will survive the cold and come back in full force when spring
arrives. Plant grasses where they will not be overwatered. They come in many textures and colors and can be a beautiful background plant for any garden setting. Pampas grass is one of my favorites with beautiful five foot tall seed spikes. Plant these in sunny areas. Colorful Japanese forest grasses like shade. Smaller in height, they make an excellent border plant and add lots of exotic color in leaf and seed. Blue oat grass will be a standout all alone in an attractive urn–like planter. These are great for shaded areas like front porches or entry ways. It is time to get out and get busy making your fall garden ready for its winter rest. Investing time now is a way to gather the family together in a place of natural beauty. Raking, clipping and digging are always more fun when done with lots of hands—and it is quicker too. That leaves time for a cup of hot chocolate around the fire pit in a wellgroomed yard, and then a well-deserved winter rest for all—nature included. Be thankful for her bounty.

WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
IT HAS RECENTLY come to my attention that Louisiana residents can save money on their homeowner’s policies, if they have built or retrofitted their residences to reduce the amount of loss from a windstorm or hurricane. To be eligible for the discount from insurance agencies who write in Louisiana, the mitigation improvements have to comply with the requirements of the State Uniform Construction Code. Mitigation improvements include, but are not limited to: roof deck attachments; secondary water barriers; roof coverings; brace gable ends; construction techniques which enhance or reinforce roof strength; roof-covering
performance; roof-to-wall strength, wall-to-floor-tofoundation strength; opening protection; and window, door, and skylight strength. Chances are you may have made some of these improvements to your home, unaware that you could receive a discount. Please contact your insurance agent to see if your home meets these requirements and to find out what information you must provide in order to qualify. The forms are available on the City of Slidell’s website, www.slidell.la.us, as a courtesy to our residents. For more information, please visit the Louisiana Department of Insurance at www.ldi.la.go.
Charting Mandeville’s Financial Future
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
THE CITY OF MANDEVILLE has another election on November 19. This one concerns broadening the use of a permanent one cent sales tax originally passed in 1959. It is not a renewal or increase. This election will allow us to continue to use these funds for 75 percent of our police budget and city hall operations, as well as infrastructure projects. The tax will remain whether it passes or fails; voting no will not remove the tax. This election is crucial to our police and city operations. Your vote is important. There has recently been a lot of discussion regarding taxes and the expenses of city governments. Some cities are facing serious financial difficulties. I am happy to report that Mandeville has a strong financial position. In order to ensure our continued financial stability, I am establishing a citizens committee to
address long-range financial plans for our city. The committee will be comprised of a selection from each council member along with my own appointments. I have asked Ray C. Baas, Chairman of the Civic Coalition to chair the committee. Our new Finance Director, Frank Oliveri will be a non-voting member to provide assistance in analysis and financial information. The group will identify revenue and legal spending, review expenses, and make recommendations, to ensure that Mandeville continues to maintain its commitment to our citizens, with qualified employees and a level of services that meet citizen expectations. I believe this will be a great step in charting the city’s financial future. I expect the committee to begin meeting in November.

One Election at a Time

WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
WITH LOCAL ELECTIONS behind us, more focus will begin on next year’s presidential election and federal issues. Expect to hear more about jobs plans, deficits, European debt crises, trade agreements, infrastructure modernization and federal regulations. I learned a lot recently from Tom Donahue, President of the U.S. Chamber at our Committee of 100 Fall meeting. It was no surprise that Donahue’s compelling presentation was about the economy and all the factors that are contributing to its on-going decline. I always leave these meetings feeling so informed with facts, that I can take a break from my usual daily doses of Fox and CNN. During the two-day meeting, there was conversation among colleagues about federal regulations that are strangling businesses and individuals, stopping
building projects from single family homes, to churches, to commercial development. In the labor department alone there are over 100 regulations. Ever since health care reform was approved last year, “regulations” has been the one word I have heard over and over from Chamber members, to congressmen and senators. The U.S. Chamber, with the backing of its Federation Partnership with Chambers across our country, is addressing and providing alternative solutions to all the above, including a six-point jobs plan featured on the front page of their website, USChamber.com. As our board of directors plans for 2012 with a focus on local and state issues, we will stay tuned in to the U.S. Chamber for not just hope and optimism, but action and solutions on issues that indeed impact our members and local economy.

From Destruction to Healing
WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
ONE OF THE MOST iconic images from Hurricane Katrina is the photo of the devastated Interstate 10 Twin Span bridges connecting New Orleans to Slidell. The destruction of these bridges demonstrates the power unleashed on the entire New Orleans metro area, including St. Tammany Parish, on August 29, 2005. Shortly after the storm, an idea began to form—an idea to turn destruction into construction. This idea quickly spread, and much effort and several years later, two sections of the former I-10 Twin Spans will now be used by the residents of St. Tammany and all surrounding parishes as a fishing pier. The pier is scheduled to open December 29, 2011. Two spans, each approximately 2,300 feet long, will be connected to the shore by a bridge. When
first opened, temporary facilities will include a bait shop, snack bar, restrooms and fee collection area. Transportation will be provided for citizens who need help getting to the bridge and pier itself. The west span will be opened in the future. Everyone involved is passionate about turning a negative into a positive project, which can be enjoyed by families for generations. It is a great way to help the healing from the difficulties we all faced. This site of former destruction has now been turned into a place of family fun. Traffic from the new twin spans rolls by, demonstrating the resilience of this place and its people. The reclaimed roadway has been transformed and now enjoys a new life. Healing, indeed.
Communicating Value
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
AS BUSINESS PEOPLE, we all want to build relationships and gain customers, but we all face challenges when approaching marketing communications. Staying in contact with our customers is the key to business promotion. In order to stay relevant, you must make your message valuable. If the challenge is to reach out effectively to prospective, current and past customers without making them feel “sold,” the solution is this: provide free value with every marketing communication, whether through a Web site, a newsletter, an e-mail, over the phone, or in person. When you consistently provide valuable information, you position yourself as a helpful expert and a good company with which to do business. In time, your unique value will become your differentiator— the thing that makes your business appealing.
Providing valuable information in your communications can also make your contacts more likely to pass that information—and your name—to another potential customer, giving you more exposure in the marketplace. Centering your communications on the concept of value can also give you an advantage in sales negotiations. It is better to focus these conversations on the value you offer than on the price you charge. If your sales leads already associate you with value and expertise, your negotiations are likely to be easier. Whether you are a big company or a small business, for-profit or nonprofit, the best step you can take today to improve your communications is to commit to delivering value in every contact you have with customers. To learn ways to help you communicate your business, contact the Chamber today at www.estchamber.com.

Ponchatoula—An Artistic Haven
34
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
WHENEVER PEOPLE HEAR the name “Ponchatoula,” they envision strawberries and antiques. Ponchatoula is much more. Ponchatoula is also an up-and-coming artistic community. Many different talents can be found including painters, sculptors, jewelry-makers and quilting-blockers. Each October, Ponchatoula hosts the Berry Patch Quilt and Art Expo with an outdoor display of over 200 quilts aflutter from the downtown architecture. This year’s event was a magnificent success. Ponchatoula has quickly become an artistic leader in the newly-initiated Northshore Quilt Trail Association. Wooden quilt blocks depicting the history and culture of Ponchatoula, as well as others demonstrating business motifs and personal
quilt-pattern favorites, are displayed throughout the community. The Art Station in downtown Ponchatoula, displayed the first painted quilt block in Louisiana, but many others have followed in their artistic footprint. The mission of the Association is to “showcase the historical beauty and cultural significance of the art of quilt.” The Quilt Trail will provide an economic boost to tourism while promoting community and corporate collaboration with other Northshore parishes. The city of Ponchatoula encourages everyone to participate in this community project or come and view this splendid display. Please contact Donna Mollere or Kim Zabbia at 985-386-8815 for more information.

AgeLess The
Wellness • Weight Loss • Hormones Do you suffer from fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain or decreased libido?
Dr. Burkenstock’s Skin • Body • Health has the answer. Hormonal and metabolic disharmony can lead to fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain and decreased libido to name just a few. Dr. Kelly Burkenstock has formulated AgeLess Rx—The Answer to bring your body back into balance. “When the body’s hormones, vitamins and metabolism are unbalanced, it will be in a state of inflammation, says Dr. Burkenstock. “This results in accelerated aging and weight gain that lower the patient’s energy, mood, health and overall well-being.”
“What I love most about being a patient of Dr. Burkenstock’s, is her ability to not only make you look beautiful—she makes you feel beautiful. Her dedication to her patients’ well-being, goes far beyond what one expects from a physician.”—Brenda

Before
Dr Burkenstock integrates an age management, weight-loss and nutrition plan in conjunction with medical testing and a complimentary fitness club membership to offer a comprehensive solution to reinstate the body’s natural equilibrium. “Before I met Dr. B. I was fatigued, overweight at 290 pounds, and suffered multiple symptoms including leg pain,” recalls Gary Sallinger, patient of Dr. Burkenstock’s. “She diagnosed me with diabetes, high cholesterol and vitamin deficiencies. She prescribed a comprehensive approach using vitamins and targeted medications, combined with diet and exercise. Today, I am a healthy 220 pounds, I look better and I feel 20 years younger.” Key components of this comprehensive program include metabolic blood, urine and blood sugar testing, cholesterol, and thyroid status, along with the patient’s acid/base balance and hormone/ vitamin status that drives the body’s equilibrium. “Our customized AgeLess Rx program includes lifestyle assessment, hormone and vitamin therapy, a custom diet and exercise plan as well as traditional medications,” Dr. Burkenstock notes. “The bottom line is that you can be one of the 20 percent that looks and feels great at any age!” Because—You are so worth it!
