Celebrating Gratitude NOVEMBER IS ALL about coming together. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, we prepare our homes and our hearts to receive friends and relatives as we celebrate gratitude for our blessings. A favorite new tradition of mine is to take each day of the month to acknowledge something for which we are thankful, practicing mindfulness and appreciation for all that we have. In this month’s issue, you’ll read about our Enterprising Woman, Erica Williams. Erica brings together her talents and gifts through many endeavors that give back to her community. Along with building a thriving salon business in her home town of Slidell, Erica now shows gratitude for financial support she received in the past by running a program to help young women attain college scholarships. Also featured this month is our focus on senior living and related services. Our golden years can be greatly enhanced by the way we live our lives and take care of ourselves. Keeping active, staying healthy and being social are just some of the key factors to living a long and happy life. Generations of Care In Ponchatoula LISA HUGHES BEGAN her career in 1990 working at the same New Orleans area funeral home where her mother, Diane Nata, worked. Today, Hughes has built a family business where she, daughter Megan and Nata serve the Ponchatoula community. Hughes loved her job and went on to serve her funeral director’s apprenticeship in Chalmette where she and husband Harry were raised. By August of 1999, Hughes had earned her Louisiana Funeral Director’s License and in 2002, received her Louisiana Life, Health and Accident Insurance License. Hughes has arranged and directed funeral services in New Orleans, Metairie, the West Bank, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parishes. When relocating after Hurricane Katrina, she and Harry chose Ponchatoula. There, she would also pursue her dream of going out on her own. A love of the industry and a drive to help people make Hughes’ career very fulfilling. “This is my calling. I love helping families. There’s a lot to know in the industry and that’s gained through experience and a willingness to learn. Certain certifications are voluntary, but I earned those in order to better serve families.” Hughes completed a 180-hour program to become a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner, which fosters ongoing personal and professional growth with continuing education and the goal of raising funeral service standards. When a church building in Ponchatoula became available, Hughes saw

the opportunity to build her own business, LN Hughes Funeral Services. “It’s been a lot of work, but I’ve dreamed of this opportunity for a while. The inside is totally remodeled. Our chapel/visitation area seats 100 people, the reception room has a full-service kitchen, and we have a large lobby with two arrangement offices. It’s tastefully done, modern and light. It’s welcoming, not intimidating.” Hughes gears ceremonies directly toward family with the Celebration of Life video at the heart of the service. “They see their loved one’s childhood, wedding, children, grandchildren, vacations—their whole life. I offer guidance and support, assisting them but not dictating. The goal is to allow the grief process and help with healing.” To minimize stress during difficult times, Hughes, a NFDA Certified Preplanning Consultant, also offers pre-arrangements. “People come in to arrange for themselves or a loved one and have the option to pay in advance which locks in costs. Or, they may leave written instructions with payment at the time of passing.” Hughes is thriving in the place she has worked her whole career to build. “I’m honored to help families in times of need with a full-service funeral home. HAVE YOU EVER heard a buzzing, humming or hissing sound for no reason? You can be sitting in total silence, it can be the dead of night, yet a buzzing sound is in your ears and doesn’t go away. If so, you may be experiencing tinnitus, and you’re not alone. Nearly 15 million Americans experience the exact same sensation. Tinnitus is when you “hear” sounds that don’t exist due to a problem within your ears. Most commonly, this is experienced by those of us that work in loud environments or are exposed to loud noise. For example, musicians, construction workers or those of us that regularly shoot guns are at risk of being affected by this condition. There are two kinds of tinnitus: subjective and objective. Subjective tinnitus stems from problems with your outer, middle or inner ear causing only the person affected to hear these sounds. In the case of objective tinnitus, your doctor can also hear it during an examination, with the sound being caused by structures near your ear - such as blood vessels, tiny bones or muscle contractions. Tinnitus is not an illness or disease itself, it is always a symptom of another medical condition, ranging from simple problems such as compacted ear wax, stress or hearing loss, to more complex matters such as neurological disease and head trauma. Although there are no specific cures, there are multiple ways to manage tinnitus through distraction/relaxation techniques, and hearing devices. You can try playing background music on the radio or running a fan to distract yourself or mask your tinnitus. Sound generators can also play

shares about her career as a Director of Operations for Tulane Health System and her love for the nonprofit volleyball program she founded. One wonders how opening a salon fit into her master plan. “I lived near Magazine Street for a few years and one of my favorite things to do was to enjoy a Saturday morning pampering at the upscale salons. When I moved back to Slidell, they didn’t have a blow dry bar and I wanted to recreate one of my favorite pieces of the city.” Since opening The Blow Dry Bar, she says the business has unexpectedly been a catalyst for community involvement. I’m honored to be a part of Olde Towne organizations and the revitalization of this area.” Williams says she’s continuing her family’s mission to better their community. “My grandmother, Pearl Williams, was a councilwoman in Slidell when women in politics were rare. She inspired my love for this city. As a kid, I loved visiting city hall with her. She would let me run around the council chambers and pretend to cast votes by flipping the voting switches.” Williams fondly recounts Pearl’s many endeavors including her beloved Children’s Wish Endowment. “She’d let me pick out gifts and help set up parties at the Olde Towne Soda Shop where the ill children were so excited to ride on the firetruck. She received many honors including the Athena Award, Citizen of the Year, and she has a garden dedicated to her in John Slidell Park in remembrance of her dedication to Keep Slidell Beautiful.” Williams credits her experience as a collegiate athlete for preparing her to carry the torch as the third generation of Williams’ women to be involved in the Slidell community. “It was a fantastic experience and my turning point. I learned time management, self-sufficiency and how to rise to the occasion.” While in school, Williams excelled in her studies of political science and business while also training daily for her full-time job as a college volleyball player. “I had to develop discipline to balance school and sports. I attended practice, traveled for games, and still had to make time to study, but I did it for my future and my mom. Like Pearl, Wynn exemplified passionate leadership over the years serving as president for Keep Slidell Beautiful, The Rotary Club, and is an alumna of Leadership Northshore. Another life-changing influence for Williams was the job that lead to her career in healthcare. “During my senior year, I needed to work to help save for college. I started as a registration clerk and ER tech at the local hospital. Throughout college, I worked at local physician offices to help pay my bills. When I moved back to Slidell after graduating, I began working at the Heart Hospital where I was promoted to ER physician practice coordinator. I loved being involved in making changes that lead to better patient care so when it came time to further my education, I chose a Master of Healthcare Administration over a law degree. Today I am blessed to work as a Director for the largest healthcare company in America, HCA.” Reflecting on her path, she credits the scholarship that led to her college sports career as a gamechanger. Four years ago, she established the non-profit Southern Elite Training Academy as a way to help others on their own paths. Her vision for the program was not only securing college scholarships for the athletes but also preparing them for what collegiate athletics actually entails. “Club volleyball is expensive and like myself, many athletes are not able to play unless they have financial assistance through sponsorships. So, I started a nonprofit that would incentivize businesses to help us pay for uniforms and travel costs. It’s my passion to afford athletes the opportunity of playing on a national stage and possibly being recruited to play in college. I’m proud to say that in 2018, all seven of my seniors received scholarships.” With so many different interests, projects and talents in play, one might assume Williams is scattered. WE KNOW THE adage, “You cannot take it with you, when you go.” The Will and the Living Trust both provide a method for transferring your estate. With the Living Trust, you create a Trust instrument while alive, then, you transfer your property to the Trustee of the Trust, and your property becomes re-titled in the name of the Trust. In contrast the Last Will does not transfer your estate until you pass. The Will is then submitted for probate and that process re-titles your assets to your named beneficiaries. Privacy Concerns. The probate/succession process creates a civil/public record with a copy of the Will. But, the Living Trust also results in having the Acts pertaining to immovable property, and an extract of Trust, filed in the public record. Control Concerns. A Trust permits you to name successor Trustees and beneficiaries. Certain living trusts can also permit you to control later property distributions. With the Will, the Testator can also establish control with usufruct interests, conditional bequests, and incorporating testamentary trusts, a trust that only goes into effect when conditions are

THE AMERICAN SLEEP ASSOCIATION says that about 10% of people suffer from teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. It can happen day or night. Many factors can contribute to this condition. The effects of grinding and clenching can be detrimental to your chewing muscles and teeth when left untreated. So, what does bruxism look like? Many associate it with the noises made by a bed partner at night. But, more often, the grinding is silent. Frequently, it is done unconsciously while sleeping, intensely concentrating or focusing. These unnoticeable movements can place excessive forces on the teeth, joints and muscles of the head and neck. Over time, this consistent overuse can produce facial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders, tension-type headaches, earaches and even neck pain. It frequently causes tooth damage to several or all teeth. Often, grinding wears down the outer layer of your teeth and can event result in fractures. What puts you at risk for bruxism? Some of the most common risk factors include medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and amphetamines; stimulants including tobacco, caffeine or recreational drugs; alcohol consumption; acute stress; and age, with the condition more common in children. Bruxism is also commonly associated with mental disorders such as ADHD and sleeping disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. While it might take time to find the cause of your bruxism, break down of your teeth often occurs long before other symptoms appear. Protecting your teeth and muscles of mastication can be helped with the simple use of an occlusal guard (often referred to as a night guard), custom-made to your teeth and your habits. Fall Is The Time To Plant Trees THE BEST TIME to plant trees in Louisiana is from November through early December. During that time, the soil is still warm which encourages vigorous root growth, and trees will have several months to get established before next summer’s heat. Planting at this time is especially beneficial for balled-and-burlapped trees because they lose so much of their root system when they are extracted from the ground. Here are some points you need to consider: • Select a tree that will mature at the appropriate size. I cannot stress this too much. Generally, small trees are those that grow from 15 feet to 25 feet tall, medium-sized trees grow from 30 feet to 55 feet tall and large trees are those that grow 60 feet or taller. • Think about the purpose of the tree and why you feel it is needed. This will help you determine what characteristics the tree should have–such as its shape, size and rate of growth, type of flowers, attractive berries, brightly colored fall foliage or unusual bark. • Decide if you want a tree that retains its foliage year-round (evergreen) or loses its leaves in the winter (deciduous). • Choose trees that are well adapted to our growing conditions. A number of northern species of beech, maple, conifers and others you might see in catalogs are not suitable for our area. • Check the location of overhead power lines, and if you must plant under them, use small, low-growing trees. Also consider underground water lines and septic tanks. Don’t forget walks, driveways and paved surfaces that may be damaged by the roots of large trees. Locate large trees at least 15 feet away from your house or any paved surfaces. • Water a newly planted or transplanted tree whenever the weather is dry. This is the single most important thing you can do to ensure its survival, especially the first summer after planting. Enjoy all the colors of the fall season and plant a tree!

Combine apple cider, pear nectar, vodka and ginger ale in shaker and stir until well-blended. Rim the glass with brown sugar. Place apple slice inside glass. Pour into ice-filled glass and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

Muddle the figs, jam, lemon juice and honey in a cocktail shaker untile the figs are mostly broken down. Add ice and vodka, and shake the mixture vigorously until chilled. Strain into martini glasses and garnish with slices of fresh fig.

Shortly after their first introduction, Ava found herself on a mini road trip to Kentwood with Dawn. It turned out that Dawn had an opportunity to sell one of her listings and needed an agent to represent the buyer, and Ava was flattered that she was the “chosen one!” Time passed, and Ava had an opportunity to help out Dawn with an open house event. While she was putting out signs advertising the open house that morning, Ava realized she could no longer feel the right side of her body. She vanished from the scene and headed to the hospital. Ava later texted Dawn, apologizing that she was in the hospital, but promised to talk later. In the summer of 2019, Dawn and Ava got to catch up and reconnect. Dawn and Ava united to form a team of agents for buyers and sellers to rely on. They want clients to feel taken care of completely. In 2002, while attending the University of New Mexico, Ava Marsalone began her career working as an estate transaction coordinator. To start, take decluttering room by room or even start with a smaller space. Commit to a few hours a week until you have completed the process in each room and can get your house for sale on your desired date. Set up boxes marked to keep, store, donate or trash. Keep garbage bags handy for unexpected trash. It is always helpful to do your research. Know the proper places to donate your things. Research storage units, pricing and determine approximate length of time you’ll need the unit in order to stay within your budget. While decluttering, keep in mind your new space. Are you downsizing or moving to a bigger home? This information can help determine how much you keep or get rid of. And, yes, this process can be emotional. Try to ask yourself if it’s been more than a year since you’ve used something. If so, you can get rid of it more easily knowing someone else might have a greater need for it. And lastly, make every attempt not to buy new things before you sell your house, this will keep your moving hassles to a minimum.
