BIRTHDAYS ARE SOMETHING we all seem to Signature _____________________________________ take for granted, especially as we get older. This year, my birthday was incredible thanks Date ________________________________________ to my husband—who planned the first party I have had in years—and to everyone who came out to celebrate the occasion with us. But Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October, reminds us all that there are many families who cherish every birthday of their mothers, sisters, daughters, wives or friends for different reasons. Because they have managed to battle breast cancer and win. This is what Breast Cancer Awareness represents; fighting the fight against a disease we all know so much about, but have yet to fully understand; reminding us all to know our family history, get regular mammograms and understand the language of our bodies; and shining a light on breast cancer and its victims, so that research and advancement continues. In this issue, we are proud to stand with our advertisers for our annual Shop-toStop Breast Cancer campaign. We bring you Colors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. insight from a woman who has been on both This ad may not be used without permission from G&A Publishing. You will also meet our Enterprising Woman, who has been instrumental in tackling countless issues, including health care, throughout her career in public service. No matter how you spend these next 31 days, take a moment to think of the women who are fighting for their health, the physicians who are working to heal them, and the researchers who continue to search for answers. And remember—every birthday is a gift—one that should be celebrated.

Who’s in Control of Your Oral Health?
OVER THE YEARS many patients have commented that their dental care is tied directly to their insurance benefits. Many do not see a dentist for years unless they change to a job where dental benefits are offered. For many, dental insurance is the extent of their dental budget. Long term oral health varies greatly for many of the patients we see. Is it luck? Is it strong teeth? Is it the dental insurance? Is it the home care? Who is in control?

From Physician to Cancer Patient DR. KIMBERLY ALLISON, author of the new memoir, Red Sunshine, felt the full force of breast cancer’s stark irony when as a breast pathologist and young mother, she delivered her own breast biopsy slide to the lab for diagnostics. Within one day, a stage three cancer diagnosis became the beginning of a new and unexpected chapter in her life. Red Sunshine recounts Kim’s one year journey from nursing her eight month old son before cancer crept into her life, through treatments, surgery, radiation and finally her one-year anniversary when she is cancer free. She was kind enough to make time to offer advice as both a pathologist and a cancer patient to Sophisticated Woman readers. “Be good to yourself,” she says. “That means taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. Get your annual mammogram. Be aware of changes in your breasts. Be your own best advocate.” According to Kim, in any medical crisis, women can take charge of their own health and medical care through simple steps. “Educate yourself on your options. Ask questions. Never leave yourself in the dark,” she says. For the woman with a newly diagnosed case of breast cancer, the path to a treatment plan begins with an accurate pathology report. “Ask if the diagnosis was made by a pathologist experienced in breast pathology. Because many aspects of your treatment will be based on the details of the pathology, it can pay to get a second pathology opinion.” And finally get on the same page with your physician. “Ask about your treatment options. What are the pluses and minuses of these choices? Ask how your care will be coordinated. What types of doctors will be involved in your treatment (surgeon, oncologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon)—and will they be discussing your case together so they can coordinate your treatment plan?” Most importantly—live. “Believe in yourself and your treatment. Keep LIVING! Whether your prognosis is excellent or guarded—you are here today and very much alive.” Visit www.sophisticatedwoman.com for a complete transcript of questions and answers with Dr. Kim Allison. To read more about Kim’s story visit www.redsunshine.org.

REGENCY HOSPITAL
16
FOR PATIENTS IN need of specialized longterm acute care in the throes of a critical illness, Regency Hospital of Covington is the facility of choice. Specializing in wound care and the treatment of complex respiratory diseases, Regency Hospital has two boardcertified pulmonologists on staff. “We are a small, specialized hospital with less than 40 beds,” says Mark Knower, MD, FCCP, one of the two staff pulmonologists. “Our primary focus is to wean respiratory patients off of the ventilator, so that recovery can be fully realized.” Regency Hospital is a center of excellence for complex respiratory care. According to Dr. Knower, the entire respiratory staff is completely focused on what their team needs to do each day, to ultimately bring patients to a point where they breathe on their own without mechanical ventilation. “In a larger, conventional hospital setting, the staff may not always have the time to devote wholly to the goal of weaning a patient off of these machines,” Knower says. “However, at Regency Hospital, my workload allows me to spend more time with patients and their families, and consult with my staff on the best treatment plans possible.” Dr. Knower and his Regency Hospital colleague, board certified pulmonologist Dr. Ricardo E. Blanco, MD, have cared for patients with chronic lung issues like asthma, as well as patients who suffer from severely debilitating disease such as lung cancer, COPD and pneumonia. “Generally a patient will be referred to us if they have advanced lung disease which has encountered an infectious agent. These patients often need a prolonged treatment protocol involving round-the-clock care, intravenous (IV) antibiotics and rehabilitation. We are able to provide this concentrated, intense level of care. This is what we do every day.” For every patient whose condition still requires critical medical attention, Regency Hospital bridges the gap. Respiratory therapists, critical care nurses and a medical
staff versed in several specialties, round out the specialized care. Critical care patients with cardiac, renal, infectious disease, posttraumatic and neurological issues are also referred and admitted. “I have worked in other LTAC hospitals during my career,” Dr. Knower says. “The staff at Regency Hospital is some of the best I have ever worked with to date.” Patient referrals generally come from local hospitals and professionals such as family physicians, social workers and case managers. For Dr. Knower, the need for a specialty hospital like Regency Hospital, which is part of Select Medical, is prevalent. “With such a large segment of the population getting older, critical care needs increase. We are such a great resource for critical care patients to have,” he notes. As a resident of Mandeville, Dr. Knower has come to love the community setting of the Northshore and the people he has met. “More than any other community I have seen, people here are interested in taking an active role in the improvement of their health. They are truly concerned about their role in the process of getting better.”

Deeply Rooted Service to Others—Nita Hutter, State Representative
20
“I didn’t want to have a title. From the start, I wanted to file meaningful bills that would make a difference —not only for my district but for Louisiana.”
FROM THE TIME Nita Rusich Hutter was a child, she wanted to help others. The youngest of four, her father owned a small business and her mother was a full-time mom. They worked hard, and Nita grew up seeing entrepreneurship, selfreliance and a family foundation that instilled the belief that she could do anything—as long as she remembered to put others first. When choosing a career, education was always foremost in her heart. She graduated from Delgado, then Loyola, and then Tulane with a master’s degree. She taught high school in St. Bernard Parish and then moved into administration at Delgado. But in 1995, some people had something else for her to do. A seat on the St. Bernard Parish Council caught her attention, and many encouraged her to run. Reluctant at first, Nita realized that an elected position would allow her to serve on a larger scale while she continued to cultivate the next generation of leaders through her work in education. It was a difficult race, but Nita Hutter became the first woman to serve on the Parish Council. She was reelected in 1999 without opposition. Then the resignation of her state representative left the community without a voice. Once again, people called upon Nita to run, and she began her service as a state lawmaker. “My service at the parish level had given me the experience I needed—not only to be a successful candidate but to be an effective state legislator,” Hutter said, looking back on the events that took her from educator to lawmaker in only five years. “I didn’t want to have a title. From the start, I wanted to file meaningful bills that would make a difference—not only for my district but for Louisiana.”
TOP LEFT: Hutter files paperwork with Clerk of Court Lena Torres as she qualifies to run for Senate. TOP RIGHT: Nita and her sister, Donna Phister, with their mother, 95-year-old Juanita Rusich. ABOVE: Nita and volunteers after a day of campaigning in Slidell.

Sophisticated Woman | October 2011
While others made a ripple, Nita Hutter was making waves. She authored legislation that toughened penalties for domestic violence. She passed laws cracking down on pain management clinics that were feeding addictions. She pushed legislation that gave tax credits to Louisiana’s ports, leading to expansion and creating jobs. She streamlined state education, making it easier for students to take online courses and transfer credits. She rose to the chairmanship of the powerful House Transportation Committee, steering millions of dollars to needed projects on both sides of Lake Pontchartrain. She was elected a historic five times to chair the Women’s Caucus. Then, Hurricane Katrina. “Like many, I saw entire neighborhoods washed away,” she said. “I was in the Parish Government Complex when the storm hit and was there for the aftermath that left us flooded and without help for days.” Also like many, Hutter became the victim of unscrupulous contractors. She lived in a trailer for five years, and today is finally seeing her home nearing completion. “I had a job to do,” she said. “My responsibility was to fight for the people I represent—to make sure they were able to get home, stay home and rebuild their lives. I needed to fight for the restoration of local healthcare—which is still an ongoing battle. I needed to be there for the people I had sworn to serve.” That service earned her accolades as the Alliance for Good Government’s Legislator of the Year and the Business and Professional Women’s Woman of the Year. As she finishes the rebuilding of her house so she, too, can finally be home, Nita is still putting others first. She could easily walk away from the responsibilities of public service and focus on her career and her family. Instead, once again, the public has asked her to serve them and she is running for state Senate in District 1, which serves voters in St. Tammany, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and Orleans Parishes. It’s a challenging move. House districts include about 45,000 people; Senate districts are nearly three times that size. “I’ve never shirked a challenge, and I believe the voters are more interested in my record than my address,” Hutter said. “Bobby Jindal represented the Northshore in the House while living in Kenner. Steve Scalise serves St. Tammany and lives in Metairie. John Hainkel represented the Northshore while living in Uptown New Orleans. It’s not about where you’re from. It’s about where your heart is, and my heart is in service.” If birthplace does play a role, many of Hutter’s former constituents moved to the Northshore after Katrina, and many of her family and neighbors came north even earlier. She’s not a stranger. “It was initially people on the Northshore who encouraged me to seek the Senate seat,” Hutter said. “At the end of the day, I need to know I did my best—not as a candidate and not as a ‘politician,’ but as a public servant. Color forecasters such as Pantone report that strong contrast is prevalent. Designers are combining bright hues with neutral tones. As far as texture goes, you’ll see a lot of lace and touches of leather. And for silhouette, the pant leg is going to extremes from long and super wide leg openings, to slimmer and shorter looks.

Hammond—A Historical Hometown WRITTEN BY ERIC DUMAS PHOTOS BY KAREN KNAPPER
IF YOU SPEND any time standing on the sidewalk at the intersection of Thomas Street (U.S. Highway 190) and Railroad Avenue (Business U.S. Highway. 51)—in the middle of downtown Hammond—the first thing you’ll notice is the amount of cars and trucks that drive by. And yet, you’ll contrast the flow of people and traffic with the scene of beautiful tree-lined sidewalks, historic buildings of all shapes and sizes, and community pride spelled out in all the window signs supporting our beloved hometown teams (including a major state university), cultural event advertisements, and endless variety of locally-owned shops and restaurants. In short, Hammond’s pride and unique character are found in the dedication of the people who care for, and contribute to, our businesses, culture and history. They are what create this eclectic mix, this true “gumbo” of a town we call home. Hammond became a state Main Street community in 1984 and immediately hit the ground running. Partnerships between public and private groups, as well as businesses and residents, has produced an exemplary character and successful development for Louisiana’s Main Street communities. Back then—and still today—residents proposed little change to the historic beauty of downtown Hammond. The challenge became one
of preservation and enhancement, by instilling a greater sense of pride in and connection to the downtown community, as well as bringing in new and promising business opportunities. The people responded in miraculous ways. With the establishment of a Downtown Development District Authority and partnerships with many—and often times all—of the local merchants, Hammond has been deemed a Louisiana Cultural District, named one of Louisiana’s Cleanest Cities five years in a row, and has enjoyed acclaim from national and international visitors, organizations and awards. Starry November Night is Hammond’s pride and joy of family events, complete with real snow, pictures with Santa, music— including the U.S. Navy band—star-gazing, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a plethora of shopping deals and steals. As the arts have become a central focus for new businesses and community organizations, the Columbia Theater and Hammond Regional Arts Center are leading the way with the Lunch Lecture series, Art in the Park, Music in the Park and live performances that run the spectrum from Boys II Men to The Music Man. Current projects in the works include the Hammond Pavilion—a state-of-the-art cultural events center available for many events,
including our twice-monthly Hammond Farmers’ Market. Also, a possible trail-to-rail system called Tangi Trail that would run the length of Tangipahoa Parish and straight through the middle of Downtown Hammond, as well as immense growth and unique possibilities offered by our proud Southeastern Louisiana University community. With so much to do and such a bustling commercial district, it’s amazing Hammond still feels like the vibrant, historic and colorful downtown it has always been. The people are the same—vibrant, enthusiastic and proud. This is what keeps old friends around downtown and entices newcomers to share in, and contribute to our beauty and culture.

І leADeRs Successful Completion of Erosion Deterrent Project
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
THE CITY OF SLIDELL recently completed a project to help deter erosion along the W-14 Canal. The city constructed a box culvert to the affected section of the canal, approximately 300 feet between Gause Boulevard and Florida Avenue. The erosion caused one of Slidell Memorial Hospital’s (SMH) buildings to partially cave in. While the box culvert was necessary to address the erosion problem, an added benefit is that SMH will be able to use that area for parking. Construction of the project began in May 2010. Richard C. Lambert Consultants provided the design and construction engineering. J.V. Burkes and Associates surveyed the site and Fleming Construction oversaw the construction. The final cost of the project
was $1,716,186 which was reimbursed by the State of Louisiana through a capital outlay grant, facilitated by Councilman Sam Caruso, District E. Councilman Caruso was integral in securing funding for this project through the state, and I would like to thank him for his diligent work. We are fortunate that funding for this project was available. We have not lost sight of the fact that much of the city’s infrastructure is aging, and we will continue to face unexpected problems. We will work diligently to minimize the costs and secure additional funding when available, but there may be times such funding is not available. This is why it’s so important that we build a reserve in our budget. We have to plan ahead.
Make Your Vote Count
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
ON OCTOBER 22, Mandeville residents will be asked to go to the polls to renew a police millage that was passed ten years ago. The proposition is broken down to two millages which total 8.6 mills. This money represents 26 percent of the police department budget and helps to fund salaries and operations. It is a renewal of the same millage we have had for ten years. Our department has done a tremendous job. Our officers are top notch, and continue to obtain certifications in specialized techniques. The department is up to date in technology and remains proactive in fighting crime. They play a large part in maintaining the quality of life we all cherish. The Mandeville Police Department also plays a role in keeping school children safe by enforcing area school
zones. They have recently stepped up neighborhood patrols in an effort to curb speeding within subdivisions. The department plays an integral part in the many public entertainment events the city is able to offer. The fall is especially active with events like Sunset Symphony on the Lake and Sunset Sundays. These events are all in full swing and could not proceed without the cooperation and dedication of our outstanding police force. So, when you vote on October 22, please keep in mind that the millage renewal on the ballot is not an increase, but merely represents a continuation of the stellar services already in place, provided daily by your Mandeville Police Department.

The Many Benefits of the Chamber
34
WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
FALL BRINGS A renewed sense of energy and awareness of the benefits of Chamber membership. Chamber committee members work together with our staff to provide an array of opportunities for business owners to market, network, or learn. All of these are designed to help members grow and succeed. Attendance has been high at our bi-monthly sessions of Member Orientation, which is not just for new members. It is a networking opportunity for longtime, new and prospective members, as well as an information session on membership benefits and opportunities to get involved. In alternate months Business to Business (B2B) roundtables are held. Smart small business owners know the best way to make things happen in their business is to network, make one on
one contact, and tell potential customers about their products or services. Among our most active committees is our Small Business Advisory Council, which offers monthly seminars at 8 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Southeastern University Center on Koop Drive. The October topic is Search Engine Optimization-Making Your Website Easier to Find. November’s topic will be Creating an Effective Business Budget/Business Plan. Join us for Speed dating for business on October 5. It is fun and effective. We request reservations for each event mentioned here. For more information about any of our committees, issues, events or programs, or if you are interested in becoming a member of our chamber, call 985-892-3216 or visit www.sttammanychamber.org.

Slidell Economic Development Alliance (SEDA)
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
CITY OF SLIDELL MAYOR, Freddy Drennan has appointed 13 business and community leaders to form the Slidell Economic Development Alliance (SEDA). SEDA is an advisory group formed to coordinate and support the goals and recommendations by the “Louisiana Development Ready Communities Pilot Program,” adopted by the Slidell City Council in 2010. This collaborative project has provided the customized support for economic growth to prepare Slidell to effectively compete with out-of-state communities for jobs, business development and capital investment. Planned Action Steps have several areas including education and workforce, and leadership development among others. Infrastructure, for example, includes working with the St. Tammany Economic Development
Foundation to develop adequate sites for a business park and creating attractive access entryways to the city. Working with the city to institute a concierge, business-friendly process for new or expanding businesses in the community is also on tap as well as solving transportation issues. Marketing and communications will include steps to promote activities within the community and to reach out to surrounding markets. Quality of life will include promoting low crime and attracting businesses to the Olde Towne area. It will also include, creating a recreational department without negatively impacting the existing parks, enhancing cultural opportunities, and working on the overall improvement of the environmental and aesthetic quality of life.
Investing in Covington
WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
ONE OF THE PRESSING responsibilities I have had since taking office, is evaluating all city departments in preparation for formulating next year’s operating and capital budget. In the 2012 budget submitted to the city council for review, my goal was to streamline services, promote cost efficiency and eliminate unnecessary expenses. I have cut several vacant positions in various departments, shifted job responsibilities, and eliminated funding for the purchase of new city vehicles next year. With these realized savings and a projected increase in sales tax revenue, I proposed to incorporate projects and improvements into the 2012 budget which promote economic growth in our city. Improving deteriorating streets in our downtown is a top priority. The budget
includes funding to mill and resurface most, if not all, of the streets in our CBD. Paying special attention to streets, sidewalks and infrastructure will ensure the retention of existing businesses and encourage new economic development in Covington. It is important that we invest in the enhancement of our city. We want visitors to recognize the beauty of Covington from the moment they enter downtown. The budget ensures that citizens’ tax dollars are conscientiously spent on projects that better our community, including improvements to streets, sidewalks, and recreational facilities and programs. Under this budget, residents can expect to see improvements in water, sewage and drainage systems, and measures will be taken to improve traffic flow and transportation routes.

The Adventures of Flat Bill
38
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN in your life, you may have heard of The Adventures of Flat Stanley, the amazing flat boy who “can slip under doors, fly like a kite, and best of all, travel by mail” from one classroom to all parts of the world. Today we’re going to follow “The Adventures of Flat Bill,” a dollar spent locally in Ponchatoula. A local customer put Flat Bill into Heidi the Hairdresser’s tip jar at the corner beauty salon. Every afternoon around two o’clock, Heidi takes a dollar from her jar and crosses the street to purchase her afternoon grande-sized cup of strong, hot java. From there, Flat Bill, was used to pay local student, Barbara the Barrister’s salary. Barbara had a hot date with the
SLU quarterback that night, and used Flat Bill, to purchase mascara at the family-owned drug store down the block. Doug the Drugstore owner used Flat Bill to take his sick germ-infested daughter, Dolores to the town’s general practitioner. Dr. Dogood placed Flat Bill in the collection basket at his church, which ultimately donated the money to the local food bank. The food bank used Flat Bill to help purchase peanut butter for the Farris family, known for their six mischievous children. Flat Bill took a wild ride through the local economy. What is the lesson to be learned from Flat Bill’s escapade—buy local, Ponchatoula!

Welcoming Dr. F. Joseph Ferrara! I graduated from LSU School of Dentistry in 2003 after attending Archbishop Rummel high school and LSU. After graduation, I practiced in Mandeville, Hammond, and Covington. From 2003-2004, I taught at the advanced practice clinic (senior student rotation) at LSU School of Dentistry. I have been happily married to Laura since 2003. We have a 30 month old daughter named Becca and are expecting a little boy in December. I am a colon cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in 2008 and had chemotherapy through most of 2009. I am committed to delivering quality dental services to my patients in a caring, gentle environment. I feel it is important to avoid bigger problems by addressing smaller problems early; prevention is key. I love to help patients achieve their ideal beautiful smiles. Making people happy is a priority to me. I am a member of American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, and Northlake Dental Association.
