THINK PINK
Breast Cancer—Find Answers ALL AROUND US PEOPLE are touched daily by cancer—whether it is a scare, a diagnosis, or the loss of a dear friend or loved one to the disease. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a blatant reminder of this. It is precisely because of events like this that strides against all forms of cancer have been made and will continue to be made. Here on the Northshore, Lakeview Regional Medical Center wants every woman to “Fight Like a Girl” this October. Their cutting edge Breast MRI System gives radiologists a view like no other, allowing them to actually differentiate between benign and malignant masses.Turn to St. Tammany Parish Hospital this month for special pricing on tests that can save your life. Women’s health screenings and bone density tests are included. As recently as August 23rd of this year, the American Cancer Society’s website (www.cancer.org) posted an article concerning new findings regarding BRCA mutations. According to www.cancer.org, mutations of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have caused a small percentage of both breast and ovarian cancers. On the same website, cancer survivors talk about what they discovered while attacking their illnesses and give advice on what women can and should do to take an offensive role in their healing after a breast cancer diagnosis. In addition to the latest medical findings and survivor wisdom, you can find support, physicians, research options and countless other sources of information. The bottom line is, resources are abundant and Sophisticated Woman wants to offer you one stop to a handful of the finest concerning breast cancer on the web. Turn to page nine for our list. Knowledge truly is power.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month have regular screening exams. The recommendations for when to start screening for breast cancer, and what methods to use, vary a little from organization to organization. Most physicians recommend annual screening mammograms starting at age 40. Starting at age 20, women should perform self breast exams on a monthly basis. Report any abnormality, including breast lumps or nipple discharge, to your physician. Ask your physician to show you how to perform a selfbreast exam. Finally, your physician should perform a clinical breast exam each year. Each woman should know her family’s history. There are certain gene mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 that can increase a woman’s chances of developing ovarian or breast cancer. Be sure to let your doctor know about any family members with a history of breast or ovarian cancer. If multiple members of your family have had breast or ovarian cancer (especially at an early age) your physician may recommend testing for the BRCA mutation. Ideally, a member of your family who has been affected by either breast or ovarian cancer should also be tested for this mutation.

Sophisticated Woman | October 2010
AS OCTOBER ROLLS around again, the spotlight returns to one of the most important issues in women’s health—breast cancer. Most women associate October with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. No other medical condition deserves a month dedicated to its awareness and prevention more than breast cancer. Whether it’s as a survivor, a loving daughter, a doting aunt or a caring friend, it’s hard to find a woman who hasn’t somehow had her life touched by this common and often fatal disease. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common malignancy in US women, and is the second leading cause of death from cancer. Statistically one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over her lifetime. This means roughly 200,000 US women being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer each year, and an extra 50,000 or so being diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer. Early detection is the key to survival. Known risk factors for breast cancer include: older age, family history/genetics, earlier age of first menstrual period, later age of menopause, first pregnancy occurring after 30 years of age, dense breast tissue, and a history of exposure to radiation of the chest for diseases such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Things associated with a decreased risk include: later age of first period, earlier age at menopause, greater number of pregnancies, and a history of breast feeding. What steps can you take to help protect yourself? One of the most important is to

should have a pleasing, hourglass shape. A great bra should make you look in the mirror and say, “Wow!” Improving the way you look and feel can be as simple as finding a professional bra fitter. Eight out of ten women are wearing the wrong size bra. An expert fitter can, with a few simple measurements, determine your proper size and put you into bras that will help you look better and provide immediate comfort and relief. Going to a bra fitting can cause anxiety in many of us. We may feel ridiculous asking for help with what sounds like a simple shopping task (we’re normally such good gatherers). We may also feel self-conscious and embarrassed about our bodies. Using an expert is a smart way to shop, and keeps you from buying bras that don’t fit.

Gynecologic Oncologist/Robotic Surgeon Opens Women’s Cancer Care On The Northshore Patricia Braly, MD DR. PATRICIA BRALY is a nationally recognized expert in the area of women’s cancer. During her thirty year career, she has distinguished herself as an academic physician, as a gifted surgeon and over the past few years as a robotic surgeon. This all culminated in her induction last year into the prestigious Society of Pelvic Surgeons, a group of 125 of the top surgeons of this type in the world. However, when one initially meets Dr. Braly, they are not overwhelmed by these credentials, but rather, struck by her pleasant demeanor and confident style which quickly puts one at ease even in the most dire of circumstances. To the benefit of Northshore patients who need her care, Dr. Braly recently decided to open her own practice here. Women’s Cancer Care in Covington, nestled among magnificent trees and a serene landscape, has a very welcoming appeal. When visitors are greeted by the unique life-sized wooden horse on the office porch there is recognition that this is not the traditional stark medical office to which they have grown accustomed. Whether it be the seasonal decorations adorning her wooden horse or the equestrian motif throughout the building, one is impressed by the tranquil and soothing feel which emanates from her office. As you step through the door, it is apparent that every detail is designed to put patients at ease at a time when they may be facing challenging times. “My goal in opening this practice is to be able to individualize our approach to patients. We address a woman’s fear and anxiety as we assist her with so much more than just the medical issues,” she says. As a specialist in Gynecologic Oncology (“G-Y-N Oncology”) Dr. Braly is among a small group of specialists who care for women with cancers of the uterus, ovaries and cervix. Gyn Oncologists are doctors who train in the specialty of Ob Gyn and therefore are both surgeons who operate on the patient and also clinicians who prescribe and give chemotherapy. Three additional years of training are required after Ob Gyn residency to become a Gynecologic Oncologist. In addition to her training, Dr. Braly spent 20 years as a professor. Her years as a professor include Chief of Gyn Oncology at City of Hope, the University of California San Diego and LSU Health Sciences in New Orleans. She also was on the Board of Gyn Oncology–a position held by only five individuals in the country at a given time. Now, as the only Gyn Oncologist on the Northshore she plans to continue her academic style while combining an empathetic consideration of a patient’s needs to the delivery of care.

ABOVE LEFT: Patricia Braly rides her horse Salvador during a competition. ABOVE RIGHT: Dr. Braly and staff. or specialty doctors Dr. Braly is quick to assure that, “We always try to make things user friendly for our referring physicians. Our office supervisor, Karen Ponthier, functions like an air traffic controller. It’s unbelievable how many things she can keep in the air at any given time and she along with her two staff members, Shelly Bailey and Sharon Gorman, are always able to make sure that patients flow smoothly through the process.” Because Dr. Braly must coordinate the office practice with hospital and surgical activities, the scheduling can be quite a feat. “Karen has that unique ability to maintain a rapport with patients in the office while interfacing with the scheduling of surgeries at several hospitals. She is truly a godsend!” Despite the demanding professional life, Dr. Braly attributes much of her success to the balance in her life. Her husband of 31 years, David Powers, M.D., is also a physician who has a nephrology practice on the Northshore. They have four children, one two year-old grandson, Hanley, and another grandson on the way. Anyone who knows Dr. Braly recognizes her long-standing passion for horses. She and her 18 year-old daughter spend most of their weekends on the hunterjumper circuit. The entire family enjoys the leisurely down-time they have on their 60 acre estate, Paradocs Ranch, in North Covington. It is apparent that Dr. Braly brings a special set of talents to her profession. However, she attributes much of her success to the strength she gets from her patients, “At a time when these women have every right to complain and bemoan their situation—they don’t—they simply deal with what they have been given in a way that is so inspirational for the rest of us.” Women’s Cancer Care has locations at 606 West 12th Avenue in Covington and 4228 Houma Blvd. Ste. 130 in Metairie. To schedule an appointment, call 985-892-2252 or 504-883-8318. Learn more about Dr. Patricia Braly on the web at www.womenscc.com.
Sophisticated Woman | October 2010
“There are so many reasons why women choose us for care,” Dr. Braly states. “We may be able to avoid the woman having to undergo multiple procedures by making the diagnosis and staging the cancer during a single operation.” Patients usually come to Women’s Cancer Care after their referring doctor has found or suspects a cancer or premalignant condition on their workup. Other women seek out Dr. Braly because they have already had cancer or because of a genetic predisposition to certain cancers. These patients may benefit from cancer-focused surveillance or risk-reducing surgery. Sometimes patients have seen multiple doctors and come to Dr. Braly for answers no one else seems to be able to find. “Many of my patients find comfort in the fact that this is indeed the final step in their search for a diagnosis. Our intimate practice means patients have an easier time navigating through the many bureaucratic layers in the medical arena. Because of Dr. Braly’s involvement in current clinical research and clinical trials, state-of-the-art treatment options are available locally. Dr. Braly emphasizes, “It is seldom necessary now to go out of the area for women’s cancer care.” However, her close relationships with colleagues at academic institutions across the country facilitate patient referral if it becomes necessary. Dr. Braly feels very blessed to have a wonderful support staff at Women’s Cancer Care. “We have a small staff which allows for personalized approach to every patient. My nurse practitioner, Lisa Ashton, is the mainstay of our practice. She handles everything from pre-op and genetic counseling to scheduling and assistance with chemotherapy regimens.” Since most of the patients are referred from primary care

Amblyopia—The Path to Correction
THERE ARE MANY things that we feel we cannot do without. Our children and sight are two at the top of my list. Amblyopia is something that affects both of these. It is a condition in which one of the eyes develops poorer vision than the other. This occurs when a child has strabismus—constant eye turn, congenital cataract or anisometropis (refractive error difference between the eyes). Untreated or undiagnosed, there can be permanent vision loss. Treated in time, vision loss is reversible. The critical period of visual development ranges from nine months of age up to age eight.

age eight.

Strabismic amblyopia can be treated by surgical correction of the eye muscles. Anisometropic amblyopia can be corrected with glasses, eye patching and atropine drops. The goal of atropine treatment is to penalize the better eye to force the weaker eye to pay attention. Once treatment is initiated, vision is expected to improve to its maximum ability in about three months. Symptoms of amblyopia are difficult to detect. Most children will automatically adapt to amblyopia by using only the good eye. When this occurs, there may not be complaints of visual problems. It is of the utmost importance that children have a thorough, comprehensive eye examination preferably by six months of age and definitely prior to starting school. Eyesight is a precious commodity not to be taken for granted.

AFTER 20 PLUS YEARS of avoiding it, I finally went to see a chiropractor. My son in law, Mark Richard, tended to me and in his most capable manner explained the sounds that I was hearing myself make. Dr. Mark explained the differences in the clunks and pop–pop–pops. Clunks are not good. This sound means tension and tightness, which indicate that the malady has been going on for so long that maladjustment has taken place. The pop– pop–pop sounds made in simple, smooth sequences means that typical movement is occurring, and that the spine needs minimal pressure for realignment. Essentially, my work with clients is the same. Talking through transitions is about safely negotiating movement and making appropriate adjustments. When people wait too long, the processes take longer and tenderness and discomfort may be unavoidable. When people exercise healthy coping mechanisms, they are better adjusted. What I notice after my visits is that I feel rested, like I’ve had a nap and weigh less. In a similar manner, I hope that clients talking to me feel relief and are better able to manage what they may face next, like nothing had ever gone wrong or when it has, that things again will be just.

Jean-ology Part 2— The Rise is the Reason WHY IS IT THAT WOMEN have to school themselves on the multitudinous terms and factors involved in buying a pair of jeans? For the guys—it’s so much simpler. Last month we looked at the various leg-openings available for blue jeans. This month we’re talking rise. The rise of a pair of women’s jeans is where the jeans sit on your hips and waist. This is measured by the length from the top of the waistband to the center point between the legs of the jeans (front). Different jean companies have different names and definitions of rises available. Here are some general guidelines as you search for the rise that is right for you.

Madame X—A Captivating Woman WRITTEN BY MIMI NOTHACKER
THE HISTORICAL NOVEL, I am Madame X, is a pleasure to read. The narrator—Madame X— carries the reader on a journey to antebellum Louisiana, to Paris after the War Between the States and into the American arts scene of the 1880’s. It explains the circumstances surrounding the creation of a famous painting “A Portrait of Madame X.” Several names and locations mentioned in the book will be familiar to the reader. The strikingly beautiful main character, Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau, is born to a life of privilege in New Orleans. A few years prior to the Civil War, she spends much of her childhood at Parlange, her grandmother’s sugar plantation, northwest of the city. After the outbreak of the Civil War, as a young woman, she and her mother move to Paris, to escape the turmoil back home and to assimilate into Parisian society. In Paris, they encounter John Slidell, (Slidell, Louisiana’s namesake) and his wife Mathilde. They also meet the Baroness Michaela Pontalba (Pontalba apartments’ namesake). During their extensive and exhaustive social climbing, they meet many prominent Frenchmen and Americans, including the renowned artist, John Singer Sargent. Smitten with Virginie’s beauty, Sargent asks permission to paint her portrait. Of course, she agrees, thinking that it will enhance her social standing. Over time, Sargent created several portraits depicting Virginie—or as she was known in the art world thereafter—“Madame X.” If you are familiar with A Portrait of Madame X, you know that Virginie’s image eventually became immortalized as one of Sargent’s finest works. Those who read the novel will learn how the famous portrait affected her life thereafter. I am Madame X by Gioia Diliberto, is available at St. Tammany Parish Libraries.

Falling for Hammond WRITTEN BY MELISSA GRIFFIN
TOP: Bruce Hume painting during the annual Hot August Night. LEFT: Magestic live oak tree near downtown. RIGHT: Columbia Theater of the Performing Arts. the 2nd Saturday Sidewalk Sales in the fall. Music in the Square at Cate Square Park is one more reason to fall in love with Hammond. Falling for Hammond gets easier as we look into the future. The renovation of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts is yet another venue for cultural interests from the ballet to bands like Boys II Men. New developments like the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center that recently opened in downtown will keep people invested in their community for years to come. A public-transit system (whose central hub will be in downtown) is on the horizon, making a visit to Hammond enjoyable and convenient. Traditionally, Southeastern Louisiana University is considered a commuter school, but as the city continues to grow, we see the spirit of the community captivating graduating students and giving them a reason to stay, to work, to live and to build their lives here in Hammond where—generation after generation—the people make the city.
In a city of 20,000 residents, it’s amazing to witness how Hammond is quickly becoming a cultural hub for the Northshore region.
Sophisticated Woman | October 2010
IF THERE’S ONE COMMON trait that most southern men and women possess, it is pride. In southeast Louisiana it’s a sense of pride in our community, in our Saints and our Lions (win or lose) and in our mixed heritage that keeps us moving from the intense summer days into Mardi Gras season and back again. When people from other parts of the country ask us why we live here, we smile and say, “There’s no other place like it!” In a city of 20,000 residents, it’s amazing to witness how Hammond is quickly becoming a cultural hub for the Northshore region. There’s an energy here that draws people in for new business ventures, newly inspired art and even retirement. What builds a city like Hammond? Not bricks and mortar, although downtown Hammond has stunning, historic commercial and residential architecture. It’s not the landscaping, complete with some of the most majestic live oaks you’ve ever seen. It’s the people that make Hammond so intriguing. In Hammond we take our community pride to the streets, to the tracks and to the park! This year we celebrated when our city was named the “Cleanest City” for the fourth time in the State Division H Cleanest City Competition. We have litter like everywhere else, but Hammond’s cleanliness is attributed to our dedicated city administrators and citizens. August in southeast Louisiana always proves to be the hotter than we think we can handle, but each year locals find cool activities that help us forget the heat and still pass a good time! This year during the 15th Annual Hot August Night on August 20, downtown Hammond hosted a record number of guests. Approximately 10,000 people attended the event to meet friends for fun and fine dining, for the hot deals at their favorite stores, for the live music that filled the streets and businesses, and for the ever-popular art stroll and wine tasting. Events like Hot August Night have caught the attention of the regional art community. Even before downtown Hammond became a certified Louisiana Cultural District in 2009, art has been a major focus of the events hosted by the Downtown Development District. Events like; Hot August Night and Starry November Night (November 19, 2010) and now the new downtown event, Art in April With Champagne. Each brings as many as 50 artists to Hammond to exhibit their work, providing a unique venue for the artist-meets-art-enthusiast scenario. Realizing that not everyone is an art enthusiast, there are many other activities to get excited about. The community block party “Take It to the Tracks” brings people together for a relaxing way to end their week, as does the Hammond Market (year-round farmer’s market) and

І LeaderS Celebrate Slidell
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
LAST AUGUST, when the City of Slidell’s Department of Cultural & Public Affairs challenged elected officials and community business leaders to become artists for a day, the resulting “Super Bowl Exhibit” and auction wowed audiences and netted over $12,000 in funding for the city’s outdoor mural project. Now those efforts have earned the department two prestigious national 3CMA (City-County Communications and Marketing Association) Awards. A first place Savvy Award for the city’s marketing efforts, which garnered tremendous publicity, and a second place Silver Circle Award for the Cultural Extravaganza and Super Bowl Auction. Slidell was the only Louisiana city to take home a Savvy Award from the conference. In both categories, Slidell beat out other cities with populations of up to 800,000 and budgets of up to $40,000. The awards mark the third time in less than a year that the city’s cultural programming has garnered national attention for Slidell. In November of 2009, the City of Slidell brought home the National League of Cities’ Gold Award for Municipal Excellence for its arts
programs and cultural economy development efforts. It was the first time any Louisiana city has received this prestigious award. More recently, the city was selected as one of Americans for the Arts “100 Local Arts Index Cities,” an 18 month study which will focus on strong local arts leadership and local innovative arts programs, and will use a comprehensive approach to measure the health and vitality of the local cultural economy. More and more people are sitting up and taking notice of Slidell and all that we have to offer. I think it’s important for people to realize that these cultural events help bring tourists to our area and help attract new businesses. They provide a tremendous economic impact, which is more important than ever in this current economic climate. It’s good business and a great way to strengthen our community. Clearly, Slidell’s art scene is an integral part of what makes the city such a great place to live. We invite everyone to join us for our cultural events and help us celebrate Slidell.
More and more people are sitting up and taking notice of Slidell and all that we have to offer.

Historical St. Tammany
WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
DID YOU KNOW that the US Government named St. Tammany Parish the second healthiest place in the country to live in 1850? This year marks the bicentennial of St. Tammany Parish. As part of our celebration of 200 years, St. Tammany has created a bicentennial website, www.stpgov.org/bicentennial. This site is a wonderful resource to learn little known facts and information about our parish and its extensive history. Did you know that Christ Episcopal Church in Covington is the oldest continuously occupied non– residential building in St. Tammany? Did you know the first phone call in St. Tammany was placed on June 17, 1884, between Mandeville and Bayou Lacombe? There is an interactive timeline on the website, a section dedicated to families and people, and a section dedicated to businesses which have played an important role in St. Tammany’s development. There is also a section where citizens can write their own accounts of St. Tammany Parish history. Many of
us have parents or grandparents who have some wonderful memories of earlier times in our parish and we invite you to add to the history of our home. We have also included a calendar of events for bicentennial related celebrations happening during this year. We also recently unveiled our first five Cultural Icons who are now on permanent display in the Parish administrative building, located at 21490 Koop Drive in Mandeville. Our Cultural Icons are citizens from St. Tammany or who lived a significant portion of their lives here, and who made an impact on our region and elsewhere through their contributions to the culture of our parish. The first five Cultural Icons for St. Tammany Parish are boxer Tony Canzoneri, musician Louis Prima, author Dr. Walker Percy, basketball great “Pistol” Pete Maravich and musician Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. Take a few moments to check out the St. Tammany Parish Bicentennial website and Cultural Icon display. There is a lot of history right here in St. Tammany.

22nd Judiciary is Changing Lives

MAYOR OF COVINGTON

COVINGTON IS home to many special organizations whose missions involve work such as providing food (Food Bank), facilitating home ownership (Habitat for Humanity), and facilitating family services (Youth Service Bureau). Another that stands out to me not only for its mission, but because it was instituted by the very Judicial District Court that prosecutes its clients, is Drug Court. The 22nd Judicial District Drug Court Program is the result of the practical application of solutions, combined with the compassion that justice summons. Established in 1998 by Judges Peter Garcia and Elaine DiMiceli, the program is designed to address the needs of those in our community with substance abuse problems in order to keep them out of the criminal justice system. And it’s working. The recidivism rate is only seven percent post graduation. The program enhances the general welfare of the entire community by teaching clients new behaviors utilizing local resources that provide treatment and family support, and creating a
suitable recovery environment conducive to living a drug/alcohol free lifestyle. Drug Court clients go through a rigorous multiphased program that includes intensive day treatment, family therapy, weekly drug/alcohol screening and weekly appearances before a Judge for progress assessment. Full-time employment or enrollment in school or job training is also required. Recovery and “mainstreaming” as I call it, give its clients the opportunity to take control of their lives in their own community. It takes courage and hard work. The understanding and support of the community helps too. It’s hard to accurately describe all that Drug Court accomplishes in one short article, so I encourage you to visit www.22ndjdc.org/DrugCourt to learn more. All of us know at least one person who has been the victim of addiction. We want to see that person successfully overcome the disease. That what’s Drug Court is doing. It’s helping heal members of our community. That’s justice at its best.

City Council and Mayor Support Economic Development
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
THE CITY OF SLIDELL was honored to be selected as one of 12 communities to participate in the Louisiana Economic Development “Louisiana Development Ready Communities Pilot Program.” This collaborative project has provided the customized support for economic growth and support to prepare Slidell to effectively compete with out-of-state communities for jobs, business development and capital investment. The citizens and city officials were excited as Slidell is focused on planned smart growth for the future. During the process, many volunteers have given countless hours in dedication, including project chairs, Brenda Case and Jack Francioni. It has been determined that the City of Slidell has numerous strengths, primarily market access and quality of life. With
the assistance of the LED team leaders, the Steering Committee created a statement reflecting the longterm vision for the community with a concise and clear statement as follows: “Slidell will be a thriving city with quality jobs and quality of life opportunities for its residents.” With the support of Mayor Freddy Drennan, the Slidell City Council on August 24, 2010, passed an ordinance (in lieu of a simple resolution) in support of the completed Strategic Economic Development Plan and pledged to support the program. The recent presentation to Sec. Stephen Moret of the LED, proved that the efforts of the citizens of Slidell have made a positive impact on creating a bright future for economic promise.

Accepting Business Appreciation Award Nominations

THEY SAY HARD work makes you lucky. Our Chamber is now accepting nominations for the Small Business Advisory Council’s 10th Annual Business Appreciation Awards. This is one of our most popular events, as it is a true celebration of local people’s hard work and resulting success. Nominations will be accepted for seven different award categories. All nominations must be returned to the Chamber by Friday, October 19. Award categories include: Site to See, All in the Family, High Tech, EEIC (Encourages Employee Involvement in Community), Service with a Smile, Out of the Gate Running and Employee Training. Self nominations are accepted. If you are interested in nominating a deserving business, nomination forms can be downloaded from the Chamber’s website, www.sttammanychamber.org. If you aren’t nominated you can’t be a lucky winner! Most of the award titles are self explanatory. Some years the confidential selection committee members decide to add a special category, a surprise for the attendees and the winners alike. In 2009 a category entitled “Everything Old is New Again” was presented
to Albertson’s of Mandeville who moved into a vacant shopping center spot; Bedroom Galleries by Cordell, who moved into a renovated former car dealership; The Lake House, located in the historic former Bechac’s Restaurant on the Mandeville lakefront, and the renovated Covington Holiday Inn. The Out of the Gate Running Award is annually presented to a brand new business that has hit the ground running through hard work, great business practices, and higher than average first year success. Last year it was presented to Liz Munson of Liz’s Where Y’At Diner and Kathy Deano of Corks N Canvas. Awards will be presented on Wednesday, November 17 at Benedict’s Plantation. Doors open for registration at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon. Cost to attend the luncheon is $30 for members; $35 for nonmembers. We hope to fill the room for this 10th anniversary celebration of business in St. Tammany West! To make your reservation or to download an award nomination form, visit our website at www.sttammanychamber.org or call 892-3216.

Celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month During October For the team of Registered Dental Hygienists (RDH) at Mandeville Dental Care and Covington Dental Care, educating patients on proper oral hygiene techniques is the most important thing they do every day. Gum disease can be linked to everything from heart disease and diabetes to low birth weight babies. According to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, the risk of preterm birth increases three to five times in women with periodontal disease than in women without it. A healthy mouth is the gateway to overall systemic health.

For Ashley Burris, RDH her greatest joy comes from getting to know her patients and giving
them a cleaner mouth and an immediate esteem boost. She has some advice for her adult patients out there. “Periodontal Disease can go undiagnosed because you may not even have pain,” she says. Periodontal “probes” or “checks” measure the space between the gums and the bone. These probes are a key indicator of gum health. “If you visit the dentist now, you will save so much money in the future. Prevention is what keeps the costs down.” Ashley graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry in 2003.

Kim Icamina, RDH, says the part of her job she relishes the most, is teaching patients habits that will last a lifetime. “I love it! I love when I have a patient that comes in and you totally reform their habits and their mouth becomes healthy.” She says even very young children can learn a proper tooth care routine. These habits, along with regular dental exams, can be instrumental in preventing dental health problems throughout their lives. “In both children and adults, we want to see you at least two times a year. If something pops up in between visits and we can catch it early, chances are we can fix it right away,” Kim says. “Brushing at night is especially important. That is when the bacteria in your mouth say ‘I have the whole place to myself.’” Kim graduated from LSU School of Dentistry in 1993 and you can meet her at Mandeville Dental Care.
