publisher's note
To Everything There Is A Season AS SEASONS COME, so they must go. October has always been my favorite time of the year. It is when the leaves change colors and begin to fall. I can`t wait to decorate my home with fall decorations and enjoy the cooler temperatures! However, this year is much different. To all of our readers who have grown to love our publication throughout the years, you can certainly empathize with the heartbreak we have had to face upon Joanne Gallinghouse’s sudden passing. With much consideration and love, Joanne’s family has made the decision to consolidate the two companies. Gallinghouse Marketing + Creative will merge into G&A Publishing operations with a renewed and strengthened focus on making Sophisticated Woman and Northshore`s Best everything she had ever envisioned it to be—and so much more. With this transition comes another change. I am honored and humbled to take the reigns and make decisions as I ask, "What would Joanne do?" Our team is dedicated to carrying out Joanne’s vision of growth and community outreach while continuing to bring the publication to the next level. Sophisticated Woman will always be about women inspiring and supporting women in all walks of life. Moving onward and upward you will notice changes in the look of our publication and its content. We will strive to evolve and also continue to grow our readership as we reach out to extended areas . Joanne once told me a story about a conversation that Walter and she had many years ago. He asked, “What happens when you run out of Enterprising Women to put on the cover?” Joanne’s reply, “Really Walter. That day will never come!”

licensed physical therapist Jennifer Fabre originally opened Therapeutic By Design Fitness and Wellness, LLC in 2004 in Baton Rouge and relocated to Mandeville in August of 2015. Fabre says the cornerstone of her practice is one-on-one, quality patient care. “Therapy is not only for treating a specific physical condition or diagnosis,” she explains. “It is about looking at the entire person and determining ways to alleviate the impact the physical condition has on that person’s overall well-being and quality of life.” Her personalized, hands-on approach means that each session is performed in a private, relaxed setting that allows for focused treatment. Unlike traditional clinics that see clients in a group-setting, at Therapeutic By Design each visit is customized for the individual patient. Her office offers traditional physical therapy, orthopedic and spine rehabilitation and wellness services as well as specialty treatments such as neuro-developmental techniques, sport rehabilitation, balance retraining for falls or vestibular impairment, treatment for chronic or progressive diseases, healthy aging and functional fitness programming. Fabre explains that, “whether you are recovering from a sports injury, coping with a life-altering debility, of average fitness and wanting to upgrade a workout routine, or perhaps seeking new ways to manage osteoarthritis, Therapeutic By Design Physical Therapy is dedicated to helping you become pain-free while optimizing, restoring and/or maintaining your overall fitness, function, and health according to your personal goals and lifestyle.” Jennifer M Fabre, PT, PhD, CSCS at Therapeutic By Design is located at 594 Asbury Drive, Suite D in Mandeville. An Empowering Program To Help Women Embrace A Life Beyond Cancer WRITTEN BY LISA MCKENZIE
THERE ARE OVER 15 million cancer survivors in the United States. In growing numbers, women in our communities are struggling with the emotional and physical aftermath of cancer. This includes everything from depression, lack of concentration and low energy, to psychological issues such as fear of recurrence or lack of self esteem due to the harsh physical changes from surgeries. Most physicians simply do not have enough time during routine office visits to deal with the psychosocial care that women require. Established in 2013, You Night’s mission is to create alternatives to traditional support groups by providing year-round empowering experiences for women who desire a sisterhood of support. You Night teaches cancer survivors how to overcome the physical and psychological challenges of cancer treatment through teamwork, coaching, and skills training. Our signature program is our "runway training program", where, for five months, participants work together to eventually show off their skills and teamwork in front of friends, family members and health care providers. Throughout their experience in our programs, participants are taught many powerful skills that cultivate a positive attitude of support. By asking survivors to step outside their comfort zones by 8

becoming "runway super stars", they discover an inner strength and inner beauty that many of them did not know they had. After the program is over, the ladies remain in the program as "alumnae" and continue in activities that support each other's on-going needs, while they use their newfound strength to pay it forward to new participants. To date, You Night has helped 250 survivors adapt to and embrace their life after cancer in St. Tammany and New Orleans. Women who are looking for support from our organization and from women who "get it" (even if they don't want to walk the runway!) are encouraged to write us at teamyounight@gmail.com or visit: www. younightevents.com You Night St. Tammany will be held Thursday, October 25th at the Castine Center in Mandeville. Tickets start at $100. The evening features the runway show, and includes a post party with the Topcats, and food and beverages from favorite St. Tammany restaurants. The You Night Runway Empowerment program is funded by sponsor donations and gifts to the "We Lift You Up" Fund, a 501c3 non-profit fund established to help women embrace life beyond cancer. You Night Events LLC is located at 234 Lee Lane, Suite C in Covington. For more information, call 877-591-5936 visit younightevents.com.

Eight Ways to Disguise Vegetables in Your Family’s Meals WRITTEN BY JOY FELDMAN, NC JD
Most Americans shy away from filling one half or more of their plate with vegetables. Yet these magnificent marvels should be the high point of your meal. They are loaded with abundant nutrients that benefit the blood, bones, and organs. Some even fight cancer. So how do you go about sneaking these vegetables into your young one’s daily diet? The following ideas are simple suggestions to creatively add more veggies into your family’s lifestyle. Feel free to add your own creative spirit. 1. Vegetable Chili: Instead of making chili mainly with beans, substitute cooked vegetables such as chopped onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower or others that you enjoy. 2. Vegetable Pizza: Try making your own pizza with a thin, wheat-free crust. Then add a thick layer of chopped vegetables. 3. Vegetable Enchilada or Taco: Instead of filling taco shells or enchiladas with beans or pork, fill them with cooked veggies. 4. Vegetable Sushi: For those who cannot stay away from sushi, make some Nori rolls at home filled with cooked vegetables. 5. Vegetable Enriched Meatloaf: When you make a meatloaf with ground meat, add precooked diced vegetables and some flavoring. 6. Vegetable Quiche: This food has been in vogue and enjoyed by many people for a long time. Just add a whole lot of veggies into the mix and even into your crust. 7. Vegetable Fritters or Vegetable Pancakes: Instead of using potatoes, try using zucchini or cauliflower in your favorite recipe. Have some fun with these simple ideas, and watch your children devour their healthy foods. Here’s to your Health!!

Growing Fall and Winter Veggies WRITTEN BY MICHAEL NORMAN
YES YOU CAN grow veggies in the fall and winter! In fact, I prefer this time of year to be in the garden. The weeds are not as aggressive, there are fewer bugs feasting and the weather is quite pleasant and typically much less humid. The first step toward home-grown vegetables is preparing the garden. After removing all of the spent summer plants, lightly turn over the soil while adding some good organic fertilizer–I prefer to use rabbit manure–and a little Epsom salt. Be certain the bed or container drains well. Plant roots need oxygen. If they are constantly in soggy soil, they will rot and drown. The following is a list of veggies you can grow on the Northshore during the fall and winter: Root Veggies – beets, carrots, garlic, radishes, parsnips, turnips. Plant these by directly seeding them into the ground. Plant the seed about ¼ inch deep, and thin the plants to leave a space of about 3 inches in between. Leafy veggies – Lettuce, collard greens, swiss chard, mustard greens, spinach. These may either be direct seeded or by transplanting seedlings. Again, sow seed about ¼ inch deep, and thin to a 6 inch spacing between plants. Cole crops – broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower. These are best started by setting out transplants, leaving a spacing of about 18 inches between them. When purchasing transplants, look for healthy, compact seedlings. Although you can find many seedlings at the big box stores, I prefer to patronize the locally owned feed and seed stores. I find the staff at these to be most knowledgeable and helpful. So get out in the garden, enjoy the great fall weather and grow your own healthy food!

Allure Dental REDEFINING THE DENTAL
experience is the name of the game at Allure Dental. From a welcoming waiting room to luxurious amenities during your visit, comfort is clearly a top priority. Entering the building feels like walking into a friend’s living room more than into a dentist’s office. The soothing surroundings, friendly staff and relaxing scents combine to create an environment that eases even the worst of dental anxieties. This precision in creating a comfortable atmosphere reflects the gentle care and attention to detail that define Dr. Daniela Eversgerd’s practice. In addition to a multi-sensory approach that helps to put patients at ease, her office utilizes state-of-the-art technology to ensure the most thorough and efficient treatment. Exam rooms are equipped with rotating television screens or for a quieter experience you can opt for Bose noise-canceling headphones. Either way, plush blankets and specially-crafted scents make it impossible not to relax. A Northshore resident since 2013, Eversgerd worked with Dr. Charles Foy in Madisonville for a few years before deciding to make her vision for Allure Dental a reality. She says the area immediately felt like home, so it only made sense to materialize her dreams here on the Northshore. She opened the doors to Allure Dental on Highway 190 in Mandeville in January of 2017, and for two years in a row Dr. Eversgerd has been voted the Northshore’s Best Dentist. She believes this is a reflection not only of her standard of care but of her relationships with patients. “There isn’t this huge doctor-patient separation that people feel with most dentists. People feel like they’re coming to visit a friend. They know I’ll take care of them,” she says. Allure Dental is located at 1901 Highway 190 in Mandeville. Water, October And The End of Summer WRITTEN BY ELLIS V. LUCIA
WATER. In my hometown you were never very far from water. It seems as if I’ve spent my life seeking it or it seeking me. The former was preferred as there was no better way to beat the heat. The latter was no fun because in Louisiana you run out of higher ground quickly. My childhood home was five houses from the Mississippi River and a ferry landing. From a child’s perspective the 24-foot high levee was a monumental playground built for cardboard box sledding and various games involving endlessly rolling down the slope and onto the apron that bordered the River Road. On the river side of the levee from its base to the Mississippi’s edge is called the batture. Lined with willow and river birch, elm and sycamore the batture was an amusement park and a constant source of mystery. There was no shortage of respectful mischief rising like the tide from young inventive minds. Ponding water created fishing holes and adjacent sandy pits made for imaginary quicksand that could swallow you whole. It's not just the river—bayous, lakes, swamps, even swimming pools are ubiquitous. It’s hard to imagine the justification for a swimming pool in this state. When my wife asks me to turn the 16 16 Sophisticated Sophisticated Woman Woman || October October 2018 2018
sprinkler system on it’s not unusual for me to wait 15 minutes to see if it rains. Or if she asks if it’s going to rain and I answer yes. I had an Uncle Dominic who had a fishing camp for a home. You could walk out of his front door and drop a crab net or a fishing line into the water. Dinner? Done. Didn’t even need a pole. You could even scoop your own bait. We all loved going to visit Uncle Dom. No end to the amusement. I would tell you about summer weekend days spent gliding on water skis on the peaty, ale colored water of Blind River. But it would include tales of gators and moccasins and I don’t want to scare you. I’m reasonably sure if you are short of money and you desperately need a swimming pool all you would have to do is put shovel to earth and keep digging. The water will find you. This is why October is my favorite month as it marks the end of our five months of summer and relief from the oppressive heat and unpredictable rain. It is also the time I can remove the life jacket that I have taken to wearing at home. With the cooler weather at our doorstep here’s my recipe for Island Kebabs you can cook indoor or out.
foodies
Island Kebabs Ingredients: 1
whole chicken breast (two halves/about 1 lb)
1 pound beef tenderloin ½ cup olive or canola oil 3 cups pineapple juice 1 cup unfiltered apple cider vinegar ½ cup soy sauce ½ cup teriyaki sauce 4 cloves garlic mashed 1 tablespoon preferred hot sauce 1 tablespoon honey or Steen’s cane syrup (optional) ½ fresh pineapple cut into chunks 1 red bell pepper cut into 1 ½ in pieces 1 green bell pepper cut into 1 ½ in pieces 4 small red onions quartered 12 whole button mushrooms
Directions: 1. Mix the liquid ingredients and the garlic in a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl. 2. Pour half the liquid evenly into two separate quart freezer bags. 3. Add the chicken to one bag and the beef to another and roll to coat all pieces and
marinate for up to eight hours.
4. Add four tablespoons olive or canola oil to all the vegetables and fruit to a gallon bag 5. Place all vegetables and fruit on a cookie sheet or in a foil roasting pan and
toss with olive oil, kosher salt and pepper.
6. Keep the proteins separate and assemble the kebabs first with a mushroom
then with alternating vegetables, protein and fruit ending with a mushroom.
7. Cook outdoor over a hot charcoal/gas grill or indoor on a griddle, turning once.
Cook beef to desired doneness and cook chicken until it is fully cooked. Sophisticated Woman | October 2018 17

Large-scale lighting and Shaker-style painted cabinetry combine in a crisp balance for a clean, tidy, warm family space. A hallway is lined with antique doors, each one different, adding a bit of surprise to the story of the home. In the master suite the color palette remains neutral while the textures take over. The bedroom sports a beautiful focal wall of reclaimed wood and a pair of rustic sliding doors to the bathroom, and the classic furnishings provide the balance needed to create a luxurious and restful suite. A bit of sparkle from the mirrored nightstands adds a hotelstyle touch. Behind the footed tub, a mortar-washed brick wall plays with light and shadow. Though the room is largely open, the feeling is enveloping and warm just like the family who lives here.

ASHLEY GEOGHEGAN
Healing Pets Holistically WRITTEN BY CINDY LOBERT PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
PASSION IS A funny thing. Some people try to find theirs for decades. Others know their life purpose before they can even recite the alphabet. Such is the case for veterinarian Dr. Ashley Geoghegan—affectionately known as Dr. G. “My goal was always veterinary medicine,” she said. “There was never a Plan B.” A glimpse into her past might reveal why. Growing up, pets were simply part of her family. After dinner, her parents would grab bags of dog or cat food and take Dr. G and her brother to feed colonies of stray animals. Her love and compassion for animals of all kinds started at a very young age. “I feel more myself when I’m around animals,” she said. “I feel off when there are no animals around. I can remember my childhood neighbors’ pets and their names, but I can’t remember my neighbors’ names,” she chuckled. Dr. G strives to adopt shelter, stray or abandoned animals—specifically the ones that no one else will adopt. “I find the misfits, or maybe they find me,” she said. Now a mother herself, she has four young, energetic children and equally energetic pets. “At this point, I’m trying to keep the animal kingdom to a dull roar,” she laughed. “We’re down to two dogs, three feral cats, one bearded dragon and some fish.” She firmly believes that having pets is beneficial to children, teaching them empathy, compassion and responsibility. Dr. G grew up in New Orleans and attended the University of Miami on an ROTC scholarship. She graduated from LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and entered the US Army as an officer. She traveled the world caring for the canines who serve our country. She treated President Bush’s bomb dogs as well as the 9/11 search and rescue canines. Dr G also had the honor of serving at Guantanamo Bay, caring for the dogs who guard the prisoners. She was slated for anti-terrorist training in Iraq when tragedy struck. Her husband Dr. Shaun Carpenter was diagnosed with cancer, and Dr. G flew home to take care of him. She completely overhauled their lifestyle, threw away most of the food in their pantry and replaced it with whole organic foods. “I started researching natural treatments and holistic approaches to caring for our bodies and was very encouraged by the results,” she explained. “It soon occurred to me, if this works on people, why not on animals?”
cover story With a husband who was now cancer free and doing great in the new lifestyle, Dr G turned her focus toward the health of her four-legged patients. She owned a mobile veterinary clinic at the time, and after eight years she had begun to feel burned out. “I saw the same patients with the same problems, year after year. They were living but not thriving,” she said. “It was always, take this pill, take this medicine. I knew something had to change, and I knew that I could be the one to change it.” Intrigued by the possibility of combining Eastern and Western medicine, Dr. G began integrative medical training under the renowned Dr. Huisheng Xie of the Chi Institute. She then opened VetNaturally offering integrative and holistic treatments like acupuncture, food therapy, Chinese herbs, medical massage, essential oils and laser therapy. These treatments have given new hope to once paralyzed patients who now walk with “nothing but needles and herbs” as well as cancer patients and everyone in between. Dr. G is an enthusiastic champion of her craft. “I really enjoy working with the referring veterinarians and having a team approach to health care. When patients get the best of the east with VetNaturally and the best of the west from their family veterinarian, the results are truly incredible.” With an abundance of gratitude to Mandeville Animal Hospital for housing VetNaturally for the last few years, Dr. G has set her sights on the future. She is expanding her services and building a state-of-the-art new facility created by architects Greenleaf Lawson and Sal Longo, with construction by Brett Davis. The Girod Street treatment center in Mandeville won’t be an ordinary veterinarian’s office. Dr. G envisions a holistic veterinary medical center with a pet spa, medical massage, medical baths for geriatric patients, luxurious pet suites, and a grassy playground with water features—all with a focus on the community. “We want pet parents to enjoy our new place, too,” she says. The building is set to break ground this fall. “We’re not ahead of curve,” she says with a smile. “We’re defining it.” Dr. G is a clear leader in her field. She guest teaches integrative medicine at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine as well as the Chi Institute in Florida where she received her integrated certification. Her training and life experience have come full circle. She recalls being a veterinary student at LSU and a professor pointing out every one of her furry patients in a treatment row of 100 cages. This professor pointed to a cage and said, “Geoghegan,” then point to another, “Geoghegan, Geoghegan.” A fellow student asked the professor how she knew these were Dr. G’s patients. “Because they all have a pillow, they all have a blanket and they all have a toy,” she quipped. Dr. G continues to bring the same compassion, love and tender care to every one of her patients. VetNaturally by Dr. G is located in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-718-999 or visit vetnaturally.com. The future home of VetNaturally will be at 123 Girod St. in Mandeville. Sophisticated Woman | October 2018 23

Believe. Ask. Receive.
October 18-21
WRITTEN BY DR. MARY SPEED
TO HAVE THE things we want, we go through a time-tested process of believing, asking, then receiving. This concept may seem simplistic; however, recall when you were a youth and decided that you wanted an item or permission to go somewhere. You asked and believed that the adults in your life would follow through or that that special person would ask you out and it happened. How you decide what you want has a process too. In the book Success Principles, Jack Canfield writes, “You have control over three things in your life—the thoughts you think, the images you visualize and the actions you take (your behavior).” For example: The thoughts you think: I want a new phone. The images you visualize: I want the phone to have the capacity to take photographs at long range and be small enough to fit in my back pocket. I can see myself opening the box. I see myself making my first call. The actions you take: I am going to send my spouse an email with a photograph of this phone and let him know that I would like for us to plan to go phone shopping Friday afternoon. In this process, you have used your powers of thinking, visualizing and taking action to believe, ask and then receive. Vince Lombardi once said, “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” Practice leads to perfected behavior. Good news—we can master new processes to effect new outcomes! What we think about truly matters. The next three months will see the realization of dreams coming true and the magic of the holidays abounding. The magic is BELIEVING. Do you remember that magic you had to believe as a child? You still have that magic!

OFTEN, THE LARGEST liquid asset in an estate is the money contained in a qualified deferred compensation plan such as an IRA or 401(k) plan. Money in IRA accounts will not normally be covered by a will. Instead, an IRA inheritance is distributed according to beneficiary designation forms. If you hold significant assets in one or more individual retirement accounts, you might want to consider setting up a special type of revocable living trust that is specifically designed to act as the beneficiary of your IRAs after you die. An IRA Trust is a specific type of revocable living trust designed for the sole purpose of holding your IRA accounts for a beneficiary after your death. Different sub-trusts maybe established within the IRA trust agreement for multiple beneficiaries, including your married spouse. Each sub-trust may be designed to fit the unique needs of each beneficiary. For example, you might decide to have the required minimum distributions be held inside the IRA trust, which means the funds can only be used for the benefit of the beneficiary as determined at the discretion of the trustee. This is often called an accumulation trust. Another option is to have the required minimum distributions paid out to the beneficiary at the time the trust receives each distribution. This type of arrangement is referred to as a conduit trust. If you want to create a lasting legacy for your family, the sub-trusts established within the IRA trust agreement can be set up to continue for many years into the future. Finally, since the IRA trust is a revocable trust, you can change the terms of any or all of the subtrusts at any time prior to your death.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS
Nine STPPS Scholars Named National Merit Semifinalists Nine STPPS students representing three high schools were named 2019 National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These students, who are ranked among the highest performing high school students in the state and the top one percent in the nation, will compete for prestigious National Merit Scholarships later this school year. The semifinalists are Christopher Le from Fontainebleau High; Martha Clark, Madelyn Mendoza, and Matt Richardson from Mandeville High; and Courtney Gasser, Dalton Lovitt, Dustin MacLaughlin, Austin Thombs, and John Yu from Northshore High. For the third time in the last four years, Northshore High boasts the most National Merit Semifinalists of any traditional public non-magnet high school in the state of Louisiana with five semifinalists. “Congratulations to these young men and women as well as their families,” said Superintendent Trey Folse. “This accomplishment is the result of years of hard work and dedication by these students with the support of their families, teachers, and schools.”
Saint Paul’s National Merit Semifinalists Saint Paul’s School is pleased to announce that eight members of the Class of 2019 have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jackson Gold, Hyde Healy, Ross Hightower, Cullen Irwin, Stephen Millet, David Needles, Andrew Norlin, and Christopher Wilson are included in the academically talented group of high school seniors who will compete for some of the 7,500 National Merit Scholarships valued at over $31 million dollars. Saint Paul's Nation Merit Semifinalists for 2019 include: David Needles, Stephen Millet, Cullen Irwin, Jackson Gold, Ross Hightower, Christopher Wilson, Andrew Norlin, and Hyde Healy.
SSA National Merit Semifinalists St. Scholastica Academy Seniors Gabi Bradford and Meg Mercante have been named National Merit Semifinalists.
