SEPTEMBER HAS always been one of those months for me that starts with great anticipation. When I was little it was because my Dad and I shared the same birthday month.

Now, it is the expectation of cooler weather, the excitement of Saints football (can I get a WHO DAT?), the simple pleasure of watching playground baseball as the seasons change before your eyes, and the thought of that first pot of cool weather gumbo. You know the one.

Between playground ball, dance, extracurricular school activities, fundraisers and gearing up for Saints football, the fall can seem to come in with a vengeance, not to be outdone by summer. Maybe, the trick is to take it all in and relish in those things we love the most about this time of year.

But she’s also just as likely to tinker with that recipe or contribute copy to an advertising campaign.

As vice president of advertising at Gallinghouse and Associates, Laura has excelled in taking a strategic approach to the creative process.

“People would probably describe me as being ‘inquisitive,’ but the fact is, I am nosey and I always will be,” she said. “Advertising is a great profession for me because I love learning about peoples’ businesses.

Laura has worked in the ad industry for the last 25 years. As an account supervisor for the Ruth’s Chris Steak House account, Laura contributed to the unparalleled growth and success of locations throughout the country and the world. After two years of commuting

to the city from Mandeville, she decided to join Gallinghouse. “The move was an opportunity to work with a group of seasoned professionals who traded in the Causeway for the peaceful atmosphere of the Northshore,” she said.

And while the agency is located in Covington, Laura pointed out that it services clients throughout the Gulf South. According to her, location is not the factor in whether or not an agency/client relationship is successful. truly commendable. After seeing their friend Paula’s sister suffer from breast cancer, Laura and Cheryl enlisted in a three-day, 60-mile walk in Dallas to benefit cancer research.

Her husband John credited her commitment to family and love of adventure for their successful marriage of 28 years. Together they have raised two children, Stacy (23) and Peter (20). Despite the fact that both have moved away from home to attend college, the Tobins have remained a close-knit group. To this day, they still take family vacations and enjoy weekly dinners together.

“We have instilled in our kids the importance of family, but we spend time together because we genuinely like each other,” Laura said. During the summer, you can often find the whole crew—sometimes beagle included—out in their boat fishing or water skiing.

“Laura plays as hard as she works,” claimed John.

instrumental in reviving Northshore activity within the New Orleans chapter of the American Marketing Association, where she serves on the board as programming chair. Her commitment to the continuing education of the advertising profession was extended to the agency a few years ago when social media was beginning to be used as a marketing tool. She instituted a series of “lunch and learn” sessions where staff would research and report on a social media topic, allowing the agency to get up to speed on the new media quickly and efficiently.

One of the most profound experiences of her life was when Laura pitched in to help during and after Hurricane Katrina. As St. Tammany Parish Director of Health & Human Services, Laura’s husband John was assigned to run the parish special needs shelter during the evacuation. Laura volunteered to work with him in a support role, helping staff the registration desk and manning radios. Little did she know that her work would extend to cook, server, errand runner and whatever else was needed for nearly a month.

“As horrible as the storm was, and as much tragedy as we were surrounded with, there was something very rewarding about the shelter experience for me. I felt like I was able to contribute and make a difference at a very visceral, basic level. It’s something that I don’t get to do in my ‘normal’ life.”

Laura’s family and friends would probably beg to differ.

According to Cheryl Sohn, a friend for more than two decades and Gallinghouse’s creative director, Laura has a sense of loyalty that is

HOW MANY OF US brush our teeth and notice blood on the tooth brush? What happens when your gums bleed during a routine cleaning at the dentist’s office? Are you dismissed after hearing a lecture about the importance of flossing or told to return sooner for your next cleaning? We know that three out of four adults are unaware that they have some form of gum disease. Healthy gums DO NOT bleed.

Is the bleeding from lack of care, a genetic predisposition to periodontal or gum disease or bacteria in the body taxing the immune system? Many times the dental team relies on traditional approaches with no avail.

We now have two revolutionary molecular tests that help periodontists and general dentists identify patients with and at risk for periodontal disease. MyPerioPath® detects the presence and quantity of specific bacteria associated with periodontal disease, while MyPerioID PST® (which the company licenses from Interleukin Genetics) provides a means of quickly and accurately assessing an individual’s genetic risk for periodontal disease.

MyPerioID PST—Determines the cause and depth of periodontal infection and identifies individual genetic susceptibility to periodontal disease. This test enables the clinician to establish which patients are at increased risk for more severe periodontal infections due to an exaggerated immune response.

Patients with a family history of periodontal disease and compromised immune systems should consider MyPerioID PST. Adolescents, patients who continue with disease activity despite therapy and who have lost, or will

lose teeth to periodontal disease are also candidates for the test.

MyPerioPath identifies the type and concentration of specific perio-pathogenic bacteria that are known to cause periodontal disease. This test helps support the clinician with better risk assessment and personalized treatment options for more predictable patient outcomes.

This test can be used as a “baseline” for any patient who may be at increased risk for periodontal infections including those with signs and symptoms of a periodontal infection and those who are not responding positively to their current treatment. Patients who test positive for genetic susceptibility (with the MyPerioID PST test) or have Type I or Type II diabetes, a history of cardiovascular disease and tobacco use are also candidates, along with women of child bearing age.

Both tests are very simple and require the patient to spit into a vial which is sent off for analysis. A detailed report is generated for you and the dental team in order to provide a treatment plan tailored directly to you with the specific answers we have been missing in dentistry in the fight to save teeth.



A FRIEND OF MINE has joined an online social network and is completing compatibility tests. Her answers are compiled with others and accessed for compatibility. The bottom line tests are called “must haves” and “can’t stands.” Her “must haves” include good sense of humor and good grooming.

While her “can’t stands” are lying and laziness. If I were compiling a “must haves” list, I’d have to say, “must have all his teeth.” The teeth don’t have to be natural, but they’d have to be a full set.

Anyway that got me to thinking about what are “must haves” and “can’t stands” in the Employer-Employee relationship.

Employer list of “must haves” might include appreciation, punctuality and problem solving. Employer “can’t stands” could be tardiness, waits for someone else to solve problems and lying.

Employee list of “must haves”: appreciation, flex schedule and bonuses. Employee “can’t stands” might be unpredictable scheduling, noisy work place and sense of company not moving forward.

Not every item has to match, but some differences can be deal breakers. Relationships can survive and surpass incompatibility.

Like my Mom used to say, “You need to get really good on the things you want from others because these people want the same thing from you.”

Makes sense to me. Positive people are drawn to other positive people. I enjoy positive people everywhere and am thrilled to work with problem solvers and hard working trend setters. Yep, I do.

IT IS MY PLEASURE to serve you and this great city. As the former Chief of Police, I have been very fortunate to travel and represent the City of Slidell many times.

I always meet people who ask where I am from. Here’s what I tell them.

I live in a small city that has some of the best schools in the state. We have a very low crime rate, thanks to our great police department. We live in a city that has 32 parks and it’s not unusual to see ladies out walking or jogging and children playing early in the morning or late at night.

Where we live, when businesses close for the night, they don’t put bars across their windows and they don’t pull down chain link gates across their doors. In our city people work together and live together. They understand

the quality of life. Cultural activities thrive. On any given weekend, there is an abundance of things to do, from free concerts in the park to festivals in Olde Towne.

We live in a city that has some of the best food in the world. You want it, we have it.

We live in a city that provides all the amenities of a great metropolitan area, with shopping, entertainment and benefits that a big city provides. Louisiana is a sportsman’s paradise and Slidell is no exception. We have five fresh water rivers in our parish. We have access to one of the largest lakes in the United States and that lake flows into the Gulf of Mexico, which has some of the best fishing in the country.

I am proud to call Slidell my home. It truly is the best kept secret in the south.



Chamber Development Benefits Everyone

LAST YEAR, the Board of Directors of the Pontchatoula Chamber reviewed membership needs and hired a full time Executive Director to enhance member benefits.

Chamber development and member services are the focus of this position. In addition, monthly business luncheons and enhanced Chamber After Hours events present opportunities for businesses to introduce themselves to members of the community.

A written Chamber Resource Guide for locals, newcomers and visitors is on track for public distribution in January of 2011. It will serve not only as a business guide; it will highlight attractions in our area as well. Meanwhile, Southeastern University’s Economic and Business Development team will conduct a commerce/shop local study in partnership with the Ponchatoula Chamber. The

results of this study will determine the direction of future marketing campaigns for Ponchatoula.

Businesses and non-profits both look to the Chamber to assist in fulfilling their community service needs.

The business expo has been a good vehicle for these match-ups and member participation has reached an all time high.

Ponchatoula is brimming with friendly people, an historic downtown and a strong sense of community.

Chamber development can only be an asset to increasing the positive attention to our community, resource development and overall membership benefits. Both the business community and the citizenry realize the benefits of the numerous resources the Chamber continues to provide.



WE HAVE A BUSY FALL brewing in the City of Mandeville.

Brown bag concerts are returning to the Mandeville Trailhead and the Dew Drop has concerts beginning in September, running each month through December.

The beginning of the 2010 school year marks the start of a new initiative in the parish that will begin with Mandeville schools. Keep Mandeville Beautiful is hosting a school paper recycling program at Woodlake Elementary, Mandeville Elementary, Pontchartrain Elementary and Mandeville Junior High. KMB received a $10,000 Keep Louisiana Beautiful Community Grant to implement the program, which focuses on white paper only. Each month,

thousands of pounds of paper end up in landfills instead of being recycled. The program will educate the children on recycling both at school and at home. The grant covered all start up costs and Southeast Paper Recycling will service the dumpsters weekly free of charge.

We have several job opportunities available with the city which have just opened up—check out our website and your local newspapers for those listings. Also, Laporte, Sehrt, Romig & Hand has begun the operational audit on our administration which will conclude in October.

Revitalize your Eyes with Little Downtime ARE THE WINDOWS to your soul hidden by half-drawn shades? Are your eyelids droopy, dark, wrinkled or puffy from age, sun damage or heredity?

Few procedures in cosmetic surgery are as rewarding as eyelid surgery, but optimal results depend upon your cosmetic surgeon’s ability to determine the precise cause. What may appear to be sagging upper lids can actually be laxity of the forehead and brow.

What seems to be extra skin underneath the lower lids may in fact be bulging fat pads.

Droopy, sleepy eyes may be related to conditions associated with internal structures below the lid rather than the eyelid itself.

The most common procedures to remedy eyelid maladies involve the removal of redundant skin and underlying fat pads and oftentimes laser resurfacing of the lower lid skin—all of which can be done in the office with local anesthesia. Excess skin of the upper lids is removed with a scalpel or laser within the natural lid fold, and the two accessible pads of bulging fat are eliminated if indicated. After the incisions are sutured or glued, the skin heals inconspicuously. Lower lids may also require excess skin removal, but to remedy puffiness, enlarged fat pads underneath the skin are often accessed from the inside of the eyelid so that no skin excision is necessary and consequently, no scarring results. Typically, the skin is only moderately loose after fat pad removal, and laser resurfacing can tighten, lighten, and smooth this area.

It is no exaggeration to say that an hourlong procedure under local anesthesia with minimal downtime can erase the effects of tired-looking, aging eyes and restore a more youthful, rested appearance.





What Happened to Headgear?

HOW MANY OF US remember having braces twenty or so years ago? Who remembers the appointment when the orthodontist looked at you and said, “You know young Johnny (Suzy), if you want to get the best result, I am going to need you to wear this for about 18 hours a day.” At this point our eyes would enlarge to about four times the normal size and an unsettling feeling in the pit of our stomach would arise. We just realized what “this” was: the dreaded headgear.

Immediately, the visions of ostracism, teasing and taunts flashed through our minds, along with the thought of, “Do I really have to wear this thing that long... or at all?” This exact scenario would play out daily in the offices of orthodontists everywhere, and from this was born “non-compliance therapy.”

Non-compliance therapy does not necessarily mean zero compliance. The patient still bears the responsibility of maintaining excellent oral hygiene, wearing elastics as prescribed, showing up for appointments, and not breaking the appliances. What it does mean however, is that the orthodontist can accomplish the same goals without headgear. These goals can be guiding the growth of a small lower jaw, pushing upper molars back, to intruding the back teeth.

For the growing patient whose lower jaw is too short in relation to the upper jaw, the orthodontist has a wide array of completely

intra-oral appliances that provide a “headgear effect.” In addition to being not clearly visible to others, they are usually glued in place. This means the appliance is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This 100 percent compliance ratio means that the Herbst, Mara or whatever the headgear-like appliance will not have to be worn for such a long duration.

For patients whose upper and lower jaws are in harmony but the teeth do not match up correctly front-to-back, appliances that push the upper molars back abound. What all of these appliances mean to the patient is that while the overall treatment time to accomplish the orthodontic goals may not be reduced substantially, the time in “braces” is shortened.

Headgear still remains a valuable and effective orthodontic appliance, though the psychosocial impact of it can be devastating to an adolescent’s self-esteem. The use of intra-oral appliances that deliver the “headgear effect” has been transformational for the orthodontist, the parents and mostly, the patient.



The vagina is a delicate ecosystem composed of good bacteria. Just like the mouth and the intestinal tract, the bacteria maintain a healthy pH to ward off the bad bacteria that can cause foul smelling discharge or irritation. Many factors can affect the normal balance of the vagina. Scented fabric softeners and detergent can cause an allergic inflammatory reaction that may serve as a vehicle for infection. This can lead to vaginal itching, discharge and pain with intercourse. Women use these products to make themselves feel “fresh” but in fact it makes it much worse. Some of the worst reactions I have seen have been with wet wipes or similar, sometimes leading to permanent scarring.

Call your doctor if you are having what you think is a recurrent yeast infection. It may not be yeast but rather an allergic reaction or bacterial overgrowth that can be made worse by self medicating with over the counter preparations. In summary, you do not need to clean or freshen the vagina. The “oven” will clean itself.

OH YEAH, THE BEAUTIFUL summer bloomers are now looking a bit frazzled! Don’t despair—think of the cool, crisp days ahead and use them to make your yard a place of happy memories.

Amaryllis and agapanthus, once loaded with beautiful blooms, now look like clumps of wilted vegetation. Giant grasshoppers have enjoyed eating their leaves this summer.

Bone meal will replace the loss of nutrients for any bulbs. Aerate and add new top soil.

These efforts will ensure a beautiful showing next year!

Coleus and acalypha (copper plant) belong in your fall garden. Their colors will compliment the fall leaves. Pink-flowered and purple-leaved loropetalum enjoys sun or shade and is winter tolerant. Pruning may

be necessary once loropetalum gets a good growing start. Bee balm, echinacea and larkspur make nice fall gardens and will continue through a mild winter. Liatrus is a perfect background addition to any garden.

Don’t overlook the fall vegetable garden.

Spinach should be put in now. Cut sunflowers and hang them upside down to dry.

This will create seeds for next spring. Herbs should be thinned and young plants started in clay pots that can be moved indoors when temperatures plummet.

Poinsettia plants and christmas cacti should be placed in protected spots that get no artificial light. This will encourage blooms and keep them out of frosts. Why not bring them in? Clean their pots and give them a biodegradable soap bath and some fertilizer (this applies to all house plants coming in).

Remember with poinsettias to place them indoors in a place that will be dark at night.

Cut hydrangea blooms and hang upside down in dry, dark spots. These will be excellent filler for holiday arrangements. Remulch the yard for winter after removing dead leaves and plants that have finished their summer cycle. Okay, now get out and enjoy each beautiful September morn filled with crisp fall air.



IN HIS NOVEL, The Shack, author William Paul Young makes a daring attempt to explain the elusive mystery of the purpose of life and death. Although the text could be improved with better editing, its content is compelling.

The Bible reads, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places” and after reading this novel, I think that among those places might be a shack, which is the setting for most of the story.

Young’s story tells of the consolation of Mack, the father of six-yearold Missy, who was brutally murdered while on a trip with her father and siblings. Although the entire family is gravely affected by the heinous crime, Mack’s emotional pain (which he refers to as the “Great Sadness”) is the main focus.

Mack receives a written invitation from someone signed “Papa,” to visit the shack where Missy’s bloody clothing was found.

Since his wife refers to God as “Papa” he is intrigued and plans to accept the mysterious invitation. Mack does not tell his family his plans, but his friend Willie knows and thus becomes the narrator.

During Mack’s visit with “Papa,” who could be a dream, apparition or hallucination, the author tries to explain why humans struggle in their attempts to communicate with the divine infinite. The author presents an unconventional view of God, specifically the “Holy Trinity.” However, I believe that inquisitive readers might find the parable helpful in coping with their own “Great Sadness” and the spiritually curious might benefit from reading and discussing it with a group. Anyone who enjoyed The Five People You Meet in Heaven would probably appreciate The Shack.
