Change of Seasons Brings New Beginnings THE CHANGE OF seasons brings endings that usher in new beginnings, and I have bittersweet feelings as this summer comes to an end. My daughter, Brooklie, spent her mid-year break with us here at the magazine as an intern. And while the team and I will miss her, she is off to a fresh new

adventure in Ruston as she starts her second year at Louisiana Tech pursuing a degree in marketing. In this issue, you’ll get to know this month’s Enterprising Woman, Tracy Gold of Tranchina and Mansfield Law Firm. Ms. Gold’s personal and professional life is centered around family, and we were delighted to learn about her husband and three sons along with her career in family law, which allows her to passionately advocate for children. On page 26, our MENtionable Mike Cooper takes us on a journey through his family’s involvement in Northshore history, his two terms as Covington mayor and his plans to run for Parish President. Another exciting beginning is the launch of our new publication Sophisticated Homes. Over the years, we’ve showcased some of the most beautiful houses

I’ve been approached by many agents asking me to share the stories of their clients’ homes, so we created this new platform. I know that we can showcase our Northshore lifestyle and homes unlike anyone else. Along with bringing the Sophisticated style to the homes we feature, we’ll get to know the hard-working agents who help everyone from firsttime home-buyers to families who are ready for their forever, luxury dream home and everything in between. I truly believe that our readers deserve the best, and we aim to give them just that.

Estate Planning for Second Marriages WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET
ESTATE PLANNING CAN
be relatively
straightforward when it is the first marriage for both parties. Often, spouses opt to leave their estates to one another, and then, upon the second spouse’s passing, the remaining balance may go to children or grandchildren. However, when we consider second marriages, the landscape can be much more involved. For example, spouses may bring their own separate property into the marriage. As time passes, spouses may also accumulate community property together. First, the spouses should understand that inheritance outcomes, under Louisiana default law, differ for each type of property. Then, spouses should determine if they have different plans for their different types of property. If so, the Last Will should be drafted to provide clear instructions to carry out The Testator’s wishes. Children of prior marriages should be taken into consideration along with any children of the second marriage. Sometimes, spouses may structure their Last Will and Testament in one fashion and their non-probate assets and beneficiary designations in another. Non-probate assets like life insurance and retirement accounts may contain beneficiary designations different from the beneficiaries named under a Will so that the Testator can adequately address concerns for each set of children, including the extent of support each child may require.
IT’S POSSIBLE TCounseling O services H areEavailable AL for survivors of sexual assault.
Additional considerations include potential problems arising from beneficiaries becoming co-owners of property. The Testator should consider how joint beneficiaries might coordinate, and if persons appointed to act in a fiduciary role are to make joint decisions. After reflecting, it may be determined that joint beneficiaries and appointments may not be the best decision.
You don't need to go through this alone, help is here for you.
The nature of your property, your family dynamic, and ultimately, your intentions should all be addressed before executing an estate plan when you re-marry.
Counseling is free of charge through the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault in St. Helena, Tangipahoa, and Livingston Parishes. Services are confidential, professional, and trauma-informed.
Christie Tournet & Associates, LLC, provides estate planning, estate administration and commercial law services. The practice is located at 1795 W. Causeway Approach, Suite 103A in Mandeville. 985-951-2177, tournetlaw.com.

Think Dental Implants are Expensive? Think again. WRITTEN BY CHANTAL CAUSIN, DDS
DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE now the standard of care in replacing missing teeth. Missing teeth actually constitute a dental disability and could alter your quality of life by affecting nutritional intake, limiting participation in certain activities and leading to a host of other digestive issues in the long term. The loss of just one single tooth could lead to many other changes in your mouth. Options to replace a missing tooth are dental implants, fixed or cemented bridges, or removable partial dentures. Of the three, only dental implants function most like your natural tooth and root. A dental implant cannot decay, and studies have shown that they have a 95-98% success rate. They are minimally invasive, and in most cases, cause very little to no post-operative pain. Removing insurance from the equation, a single dental implant is approximately the same cost as a fixed 3-unit bridge that replaces a single tooth. Dental insurance may provide a discount on one procedure or the other depending on your policy. Long-term, bridges may actually be more expensive. They can be difficult to clean and according to the American Dental Association, may need to be replaced every 10 years on average due to decay, fracture, or the necessity of root canal treatment. Sometimes when a bridge fails, other teeth are affected, which may lead to additional tooth loss and more extensive treatment. Dental implants are a cost effective option to consider when making an informed decision about

Nancy Parker: A New Orleans Jewel ON AUGUST 16, the City of New Orleans lost a beloved and integral part of her community. Television newswoman Nancy Parker died when the stunt plane she was reporting from crashed near Lakefront Airport. Nancy was a storyteller, a wife, a mother and a passionate advocate for the "Big Easy." Nancy put her heart and soul into everything she did. With laughter and love, honesty
and compassion—she conveyed the story like few others could. Nancy's love of journalism began at an early age in her hometown of Opelika, Alabama. While still in high school, she had a job anchoring the evening drive news at a local radio station, WJHO. The ambitious 17-year-old spent many long days balancing homework with evening radio shifts, working towards transforming the small glass booth into a larger window of opportunity. She went on to anchor at several stations before making New Orleans' FOX 8 her long-time home in 1996. The respected reporter's career spanned 30 years culminating in a 22-year tenure at FOX 8 where she earned five Emmy Awards. Her career highlights were impressive to say the least. From covering Pope Paul II’s visit to Saint Louis to a one-on-one interview with George W. Bush on the Katrina Recovery, Nancy always brought kindness, integrity and enthusiasm to every story she crafted. But the accolades were not the focus of her career, merely the icing on her King Cake. It is clear that her passion revolved around home and family. From her article A Love Letter to the City of New Orleans, written in the city’s tricentennial year, she recalls being captivated by the Big Easy, "I saw people in New Orleans dance for no reason and call me 'beeeeeby.' I liked that. Something about this place stole my little girl heart and refused to let it go. The spirits cast a spell on me..." And on returning to the city and her heart’s desires, she continues, “A busy career in broadcasting brought me back here. A young man I met on a news story in Alabama in 1989, years before my job in the city, just happened to be a New Orleans area native. He had the same swagger that the city did. I married him a few years later. He stole my heart just like New Orleans did… the spell never wore off. " And Nancy cast her own spell on her beloved city and its viewers. As a familiar face for decades, Nancy was a master at capturing the essence of the story. She made the city better and stronger with her kindness and her remarkable joie de vivre. She embraced the city that was her sparkling diamond in the rough. She loved what she did—and the people of New Orleans and countless others loved her right back.

wonderful sons and loving husband of 25 years, David. Although she adds a little about herself, including her recent battle with breast cancer, family is certainly at the center of her personal and professional life, which Ms. Gold traces back to her childhood in Scarsdale, New York. Ms. Gold says her father, Larry Suslow, was her first mentor and introduced her to life as an attorney. He and her mother, Kiki, fostered a deep love of the values that shaped her all-important relationships. “My childhood was idyllic,” she

recalls fondly. “My parents shared a happy fifty-year marriage. I grew up with an older brother (from her mother’s first marriage), a sister, six cats and two dogs. We were fortunate to enjoy family vacations, Broadway shows and concerts, but nevertheless, my parents instilled a strong work ethic. My first job in high school was at my father’s law firm.” Ms. Gold was introduced to New Orleans when her brother attended Tulane, and she fell in love with the city. She too attended Tulane and studied psychology and sociology before going back to New York to attend Brooklyn Law School. After graduation, the avid crime-novel reader honed her legal skills as an ADA in the Kings County District Attorney’s office. “It’s not like on TV,” explains Ms. Gold. “I worked with the police, interviewing witnesses and criminals during 24-hour ride alongs and had daily contact with juries and judges. The experience was invaluable and taught me to think on my toes. But after several years, the cases were emotionally draining because I became attached to the victims of violent crimes and their families.” After five years with the DA, Ms. Gold returned to New Orleans with her husband to start a family in a city more relaxed than New York. “That was 23 years ago and we’ve made a great life here with our three children, family and friends.” Ms. Gold focuses solely on family law and has been with Tranchina & Mansfield Law Firm for over 10 years. She credits Frank Tranchina with being a great mentor and proponent of work/life balance. “I call myself a ‘Mommy Lawyer’ because I structured my schedule around attending school events and activities. Yorker in me though, and can be tough when a client needs me to be—especially when it comes to the welfare of a child in a custody case.” She believes that her childhood as part of a blended family, her education in psychology and years of professional experience allow her the perspective to help clients become healthier parents and navigate through the tough times. “My husband, David, was the child of a painful, ugly divorce and I don’t want that for anybody. I always strive to protect children in the divorce process. To me, being a good family lawyer means always being available to listen and give guidance.” Ms. Gold wanted to recreate the lifestyle in which she was raised. She and David found the right feel in St. Tammany Parish. “I love the wholesome environment, getting to know so many people in the community, and the wonderful schools our children attended, Kehoe France and St. Paul’s.” Ms. Gold eagerly elaborates on her crowning achievement and the center of their family—her three sons. “We are blessed that our kids are self-driven, well-adjusted, respectful, and happy. They have always supported each other and I am proud to say they’re great friends. David and I raised them with love, support, and structure, but with the freedom to explore and be their best selves.” Her oldest, Max, is 22 and recently graduated summa cuml aude from Washington and Lee University. He was a Johnson Scholar at college and St. Paul’s valedictorian. Ms. Gold is thrilled that he has returned to New Orleans to work as a software engineer. Jackson is 18 and also excels in academics. He was St. Paul’s salutatorian and earned both a perfect 36 on the ACT and a National Merit Scholarship. Jackson was also a starting defender on the St. Paul’s state championship lacrosse team. He will attend the University of Alabama Honors College to study computer science. At 14, her youngest son Sam has faced more adversity than his brothers. At eight years old, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Ms. Gold says he has a great attitude and doesn’t let it hold him back. He also has been recognized for academic excellence by St. Paul’s and carries on the tradition of lacrosse. Ms. Gold says she most values loyalty, compassion, integrity, and empathy in her law practice and taught those values to her boys early on. “We also stressed being kind, patient, and generous with others. Both Max and Jackson were the President of Habitat for Humanity at St. Paul’s, and our family is a proud supporter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. We take part in the annual walk as Team Gold and Sam was even the 2018 pediatric hero. Just as I was raised, we had dinner together every night when they were younger. Now that they are older and busy with careers, college, and lacrosse, when we are able to sit down for a family meal or simple movie night, I couldn’t be happier.” Tracy Gold is an attorney at the law office of Tranchina & Mansfield, LLC. Hair Restoration Treatment Options WRITTEN BY JASON GUILLOT , MD
STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNIQUES IN facial plastic surgery for aesthetics can enhance and enrich people’s lives like never before. Advances in surgical and non-surgical treatments provide many options for patients to reach their desired goals. To many, a full head of hair represents attractiveness and desirability both personally and professionally. Treatment options for hair loss have come a long way since the unsightly plug methods of the past. New advances can help you achieve natural looking results using either of the two well respected hair restoration techniques. One is the traditional "strip" harvesting method and the other is the newer, automated Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) with the NeoGraft instrument. The benefits of the NeoGraft procedure include no scalpel incision, no sutures or staples, no linear scar, and a quicker recovery time. Regardless of the chosen surgical technique, surgical hair restoration can produce natural hair lines with top quality, long lasting results. In addition to surgical hair restoration techniques, there are a variety of procedures for patients with hair growth goals. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments, microneedling, and photo light therapy can be done in the office with little to no downtime. These methods can be used in conjunction with the surgical treatments or as standalone procedures for promoting hair growth. If you are considering any hair restoration or hair growth treatments, consult with a physician specializing in these techniques before scheduling any procedure. Discuss your needs and goals to ensure the appropriate treatment plan is in place to best meet your expectations for hair restoration and to make sure your experience will be discrete and comfortable.

One study published in Human Reproduction found that vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of recurrent miscarriage by promoting cellular immunity and autoimmunity. The assessment of vitamin D levels are recommended in women with recurrent pregnancy loss and Pate Wellness suggests assessing vitamin D even in the preconception period to help prevent miscarriage and to enhance fertility. An optimal vitamin D level should be between 60 – 80 ng/mL.

symptomatic thyroid disease to decrease the risk of miscarriage, but the subject is still controversial. One study in Clinical Endocrinology found that the overall incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes increased by 28.6 percent in women whose TSH was above 2.5 mIU/l. A TSH above 2.5 mIU/l was also associated with higher incidence of miscarriage. We suggest having a full thyroid panel to include TSH, free T3, free T4, anti TPO and reverse T3 to ensure optimal thyroid function prior to conception.

Deep Roots. Familiar Routes. WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY CALLEN KATES
A YOUNG BOY bikes through streets heavily lined with pine trees and dotted with houses. As he pedals from his Tyler Street home to his grandparents’ door near St. Paul’s, little does he know that 50 years later he will still be rooted near the alley under his wheels. Today, inside Mike Cooper’s Covington home with wife Catherine, the walls hold books, old pictures and historic maps that illustrate his journey to arrive right back where he started. “Technically, in 1953, the closest hospital was in Bogalusa, but I think it’s fair to say I was born and raised here,” laughs the former two-term mayor of Covington. “I was baptized at St. Peter Church and attended St. Peter School, Covington Jr. High and St. Paul’s. The big landmarks then were the new St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Badeaux’s Drive-In, and the new St. Tammany Parish Courthouse on Boston Street, dedicated in 1960.” The colorful history lesson continues, “The Southern Hotel building housed Tugy’s Bar and a café, Claiborne Hill had a Dairy Queen, and there were full-service gas stations downtown. One summer, I worked for City Drug Store making deliveries on my trusty bike. It was the typical small town of its day. Did you know my dad was mayor back then?” In fact, Cooper’s family goes back for generations in Covington and Madisonville. In the early 1900s, Captain Victor LeBlanc operated freight boats between New Orleans and the Northshore, and Ernest Cooper worked at the Mackie Pine Oil Plant in Covington. Fast forward to 1967 when Mike’s father Ernest took office as mayor of Covington serving for 24 years. “It was my first taste of politics and it was pretty neat. We delivered signs and knocked on doors,” says Cooper, recalling his excitement as a 13-year-old participant. “The Saints held their first training camp at St. Paul’s that year. Since Dad was mayor, I got to ride in the Police Chief’s car that met the players’ bus at the Causeway. We escorted them in and got to watch practice. I grew up seeing my dad as an integral part of the community and I wanted to do the same.” High school brought another mentor. “I greatly admired Coach Gene Bennett. For junior year basketball tryouts, I was still recovering from a serious car accident, and I could see his apprehension when I showed up. I told him, ‘Don’t worry Coach, I’m not here to try out. I want to be your team manager.’ He taught me that I didn’t need to make the score, but as manager, I facilitated the win by organizing and planning for the team. I’ve taken that lesson into every leadership role I’ve ever had.” In 1977, after putting himself through college and earning a degree in City and Regional Planning, Cooper landed a job in the St. Tammany Parish Planning Department. The Covington City Council later appointed him to their Planning and Zoning Commission on which he served for 10 years. When the mayor’s seat opened in 2011, Cooper says he was called to run, “It’s in my blood. I won in the primary and was re-elected in 2015 with no opposition. I was fortunate to work with a great city council to provide amenities and services for our citizens. And, as I learned in high school, teamwork is invaluable, so I appointed qualified, dedicated people to lead our departments.” Cooper cites a comprehensive road program and improvements to drainage, parks and playgrounds as a few of his proudest accomplishments. “I also wanted informal interaction with citizens, so I introduced Coffee with Mayor Cooper. We met quarterly and I’d give updates and answer questions. It was great to communicate with residents and business owners in that casual setting.” Covington’s bicentennial in 2013 was also meaningful to the descendant of past city leaders. “It was moving to share my family's legacy during that celebration. It really brought the community together.” As Cooper reflects, his wife, Catherine, returns from delivering signs for his upcoming campaign for Parish President. She confirms a meeting for him as she cheerfully whisks through the room. Of his future Cooper says, “My education, experience and desire to serve has culminated in this next step for me. Catherine is a great supporter. We’ll be married 11 years this month. She’s contributed greatly to my success and is invaluable on the campaign trail.” Also, always faithfully by his side sits Button, who Catherine and Mike rescued from Animal Services in 2010. Aside from family time, the Coopers focus on worthwhile community causes. “Much of my spare time is spent at charity events, and when I’m home, I enjoy grilling for family and friends. And I still love riding my bike around the neighborhood.” An accomplished man pedals along his childhood route, now bustling with activity but still lined with trees and the familiar feeling of home. For generations, his family has shared a deep-rooted dedication to shaping the future of a growing and prosperous St. Tammany while maintaining its character—a legacy he is proud to carry forward. Why Not Plant An Herb Garden? WRITTEN BY KATHLEEN GUIDRY, ST. TAMMANY PARISH MASTER GARDENER
HAVE YOU EVER considered growing an herb garden? This might be the year to start one... yes, even in the fall. The aromas of different herbs are wonderful. You could grow enough to make a few special tea bags, experiment with the wonderful essential oil trend that is gaining popularity or enjoy new herbs and spices in cooking and baking. The soft, fleshy green parts of the plant are considered the herbs and the other parts (the stems and seeds, etc.) are the spices. The months between September and February are considered the cool season for herbs and most can even tolerate the freezes we get down here in the deep south. Lemon balm can thrive the entire year or for many years as can chives, rosemary and oregano. In fact, perennial herbs like these are usually planted in the fall to give them a chance to get good and strong before the stifling days of our summers. Rather than attempting to grow plants from seeds on your first try, buy a few starter plants from your favorite garden store. Pick out a few that you really like to smell. You will find that herbs aren’t too fussy about where you plant them, and most can even survive through the care of novice gardeners. You can get planting tips from the LSU AgCenter website at www.lsuagcenter.com. When you feel the urge to start picking a few to use, try to make your cut close to a leaf intersection to ensure rapid regrowth. If the idea of a separate garden seems overwhelming to you, grow a few in pots and place around your existing garden. Next year you will likely feel the urge to expand and possibly create a new garden that is solely dedicated to herbs. Happy Gardening! 28 Sophisticated Woman | September 2019

Coping With Suicide Survivor's Grief WRITTEN BY PAT MASHBURN
THE STATISTICS ARE staggering. 122 people die by suicide each day in the United States, or just over 44,530 each year. On average, anywhere from 8 to 10 people are affected by each suicide, and we call them survivors. That’s 968 new survivors a day and 353,320 a year. We hear a lot following a suicide, including a proliferation of information on warning signs and awareness, but little or nothing about the person left behind. The moment a person becomes a survivor, their past, present, and future are compressed into a single moment in time which will define much of the rest of their life to come. Any coping skills a person possessed up to that point usually can’t hold up to this extreme stress, and putting the pieces back together is often a moment to moment struggle before it can become addressed day by day. There are many myths and misconceptions about those who grieve such a loss, and survivors just want to be understood. But, how does one explain what is seemingly incomprehensible? What makes suicide grief different from other types of grief and why is it so hard for survivors to talk about it? Healing is a process and this profound loss calls for the help of professionals and fellow survivors including counselors, support groups and those willing to share their training and experiences through their advice and the story of their personal journeys. I encourage suicide survivors to seek all means available to help them heal. Your pain matters. Your experience matters. Your healing matters. No one can take that away from you. Pat Mashburn is the author of "Just Breathe— Surviving a Loss to Suicide” and served as a volunteer crisis responder with law enforcement and the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office for five years. 32 Sophisticated Woman | September 2019
