Marrying Trends and Traditions WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
Styles and taste in wedding customs change over the years, but
couples are combining something old with something new to add unique twists to their bridal festivities. Here are a few ways couples are keeping it fresh by putting a new shine on their favorite traditions. When it comes to the sparkling tradition of engagement rings, brides who want to feel like a princess are taking a cue from Kate Middleton, who was given Princess Diana’s 12-carat, oval, blue sapphire ring surrounded by fourteen diamonds. Rather than a diamond center stone, a stunning sapphire or other glittering gemstone makes a standout statement. Rather than hearing “Dearly beloved,” from a Justice of the Peace, couples are asking bridal party members or friends to officiate the marriage ceremony. Online programs allow an accessible way to become an ordained minister. After registering with the proper authority (usually the clerk of court) and getting a license to wed, a best friend or relation can handle the marriage license and preside over the ceremony. A loved one will be able to share personal details and experiences that will make the nuptials extra special. Technology can bring the big day to friends and family who would otherwise not be able to attend. Using live streaming or social media allows grandma or a good friend to be “present” for a once-in-a-lifetime event that means the world to them. Don’t forget etiquette and technical considerations, but with the growing popularity of this trend, those issues should be easily handled by a tech-savvy friend or professional photographer/videographer. All the single ladies can share in the fun of a flower toss with a “breakaway bouquet.” Instead of one large arrangement, opt for individually wrapped stems loosely bundled together. When the bouquet is tossed, the flowers will separate allowing several ladies-in-waiting to snag a lucky bloom. As a memento, a festive group photo can include the multiple friends and family members who caught a stem. Many couples are tossing out the garter toss, opting not to make a show of lifting the bride’s gown as she sits atop the best man’s lap. Grooms are taking their own moment to quarterback the festivities by passing a football to one of their unattached groomsmen. It’s a play that ensures a completed reception. Going out with a bang is also growing in popularity. The traditional sendoff has evolved from throwing rice and birdseed to waving sparklers and now can even imclude fireworks. What was once only the stuff of movies is now offered locally for a show-stopping shower of shimmering light. Hire a professional to handle legal and safety concerns, then sit back as you delight in a magical ending to a perfect beginning. k 8 Sophisticated Woman Wedding Magazine | 2019-20

What’s Hot with Honeymoons WRITTEN BY STEPHANIE MILLER MURPHY, MILLER MURPHY TRAVEL
Even though sipping a frozen cocktail while lounging on the beach will never lose its charm, more and more newlyweds are taking advantage of their
honeymoon to see and experience some of the world’s most amazing destinations. Here are my top picks for bucket-list honeymoon experiences.
Safari Honeymoons What better way to begin married life than with a romantic glamping (glamour + camping) adventure in the bush of Africa? Adventure and romance go hand-inhand on a safari honeymoon. It absolutely will be a vacation that can be checked off of the bucket list. Imagine hot air ballooning over the Serengeti or a candlelit dinner under the stars in the bush. Take an outdoor, rose petal-filled, romantic bath for two or sail into the sunset in a traditional mokoro canoe while sipping champagne. Think of the thrill of heading out at dawn as the sun is rising and setting your eyes, for the first time, on a majestic male lion, a grazing elephant or a dazzle of zebra. Return to your lodge for an afternoon of relaxation, spa treatments and high tea before heading out on your evening game viewing activity. End your day with a gourmet dinner and dip in your private plunge pool. Combine your safari honeymoon with an extension to one of the islands of the Indian Ocean such as beautiful Zanzibar for a safari and beach honeymoon combo. Another popular combination with safari is to head to Cape Town, South Africa, a city known for its beauty, sophistication, surrounding Winelands and history.
Adventure Honeymoons Newlyweds can pick adrenalin over endorphins and venture to destinations that offer a wide variety of adventure on their honeymoons. Australia is a wonderful destination for thrill-seeking honeymooners where there is endless adventure and wilderness. Couples can take surfing lessons, learn to hang glide or hike through the rainforest at Byron Bay. The Cradle Mountains feature amazing countryside for hiking, horseback riding or biking. There is a reason the Great Barrier Reef appears on so many honeymoon bucket lists. This immense natural phenomenon is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. From getting up close and personal with the abundant marine life to taking in spectacular views of the reef by air, the list of incredible experiences to be had in this area is almost endless. 10
Sophisticated Woman Wedding Magazine | 2019-20
Another adventurous option is a honeymoon to Peru. From sandboarding in Paracas to climbing Machu Picchu, Peru is a wonderful destination for adventure-seeking honeymooners. Couples can extend their honeymoon to include a cruise through the Amazon or the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. Iceland is also a hot honeymoon destination this year. Take in the beauty of the Northern Lights or cuddle under the midnight sun when you honeymoon in Iceland. With its dramatic scenery, wilderness lodges, exploding geysers, steaming hot pools and thundering waterfalls, the land of fire and ice is a remarkable honeymoon destination.
Planning An engaged couple cannot start planning soon enough when it comes to bucket list honeymoons. A minimum of six to eight months is recommended for a safari or adventure honeymoon. It is important to establish your trip budget in advance of planning and don’t forget to factor in important expenses such as travel insurance, visas and vaccinations. Working with a professional on the planning of your honeymoon will ensure you have time to focus on the many details of your upcoming wedding. Bucket list trips usually happen once in a lifetime. Why not begin your new life together by checking off one of these spectacular travel experiences on your honeymoon? k Stephanie Miller Murphy, CTA is a luxury travel advisor and owner of Miller Murphy Travel – an affiliate of Brownell Travel and Virtuoso. Say “I Do”To The Shoe WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
After saying yes to the dress, you’ll want to say I do to
the shoe! You’ll need your perfect pair in time for your first
dress fitting and you’ll want to consider style, comfort, price and maybe even non-traditional options that show your shoeniqueness. No matter the style of the dress, wedding shoes are an opportunity to use a small detail to express yourself in a big way. Some brides will opt to have a more formal or higherheeled pair of shoes for the ceremony and a more fun or functional pair for the reception. We’ve all seen the basket of flip flops next to the dance floor for the bridal party so they can dance the night away more comfortably, but there are plenty of more daring and playful options. Color: While a white dress is still very much the norm, colorful shoes can coordinate with the bridesmaids’ dresses and groom’s attire, wedding colors or seasonal colors. Black shoes can also be a stunning choice that matches a formal black tuxedo. Want some eye-catching drama? Gold, metallic finishes, bright jewel tones and beads, studs and stones will do the trick. Heel: A high heel can provide glamor and enhance the line of a dress but may not be the ideal choice for a graceful walk down the aisle or, if the ceremony is outdoors, through grass or sand. A wedge may provide more stability, sandals may be the go-to choice for a beach wedding and a kitten heel or flats may be the ideal answer for being stylish but remaining worry and pain free as you dance and socialize throughout the evening. Frills and Thrills: Accents like ruffles, mesh, lace and other embellishments can take a lower-heeled shoe from plain to pretty and take a high-heeled number over the top. These additions can complement the elements of the wedding gown or bridesmaids’ attire, can coordinate with the cake design, add a romantic twist or simply add whimsy and fun to your look. Style: Go for conservative, try for trendy or think totally out of the shoe box. From white lace booties or festive cowboy boots, to sneakers and works of art—the sky is the limit on imagination that reflects your personal story. Don’t underestimate the importance of your wedding day shoes, whether it’s one perfect pair or several for the different phases of the day. You’ll want just the right ones to start the day feet first, glide down the aisle and dance the night away! 12

Fun and Flexible Engagement Party Planning WRITTEN BY ASHLEY CULICCHIA CASH, THE GRACEFUL HOST
Being engaged comes with a rush of emotions and excitement. There are plenty of festivities for couples to look forward to during an engagement – and the first celebration is usually the engagement party! This party is a fun way to get loved ones together to celebrate a big milestone. Luckily, there aren’t many rules for how to throw an engagement party, and many times the future bride and groom even participate in the planning process. Here are six easy steps to help you plan a successful engagement party! 1. Decide who will be hosting. Many times, it’s the bride’s or groom’s parents who will host, but there’s really no set rule. Anyone can host an engagement party! Also, remember that you can have several parties thrown by different hosts, which is common if you or your fiancé live far from home. 2. Choose a location. Engagement parties can be formal or informal, so there’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to the party location. Whether it’s a private room for a sit-down dinner or a casual crawfish boil or backyard barbecue, you can choose the perfect venue for your personal style. 3. Determine the guest list. As a general rule of thumb with all pre-wedding celebrations, anyone who is invited to the engagement party would also receive a wedding invitation. You don’t need to invite every guest on your wedding list to the engagement party, though. You can choose to keep the engagement party as big or small as you’d like. 4. Make a wish list. You don’t necessarily need to have a complete wedding registry ready for the engagement party, but it is helpful to at least have a wish list picked out for guests who want to bring a gift. 5. Set a date. The engagement party is the official kick-off to all of the wedding celebrations, but it can happen during any point in a couple’s engagement. There is no problem delaying an engagement party if it will be a long engagement, or if you can’t travel home right away. 6. Send out the invitations. The type of party you’ll be throwing – formal vs. informal – will determine the style of invitation you choose. Paper invitations are appropriate for either party style, but if you choose to go more casual, you can also consider sending an e-vite. Invitations should be sent four to six weeks in advance. Think about sending out early invitations with accommodations information if travel will be involved for guests. Side note: your engagement party invitations don’t need to match the wedding invitations. Remember, engagement parties are all about having fun with loved ones, so don’t stress! k Ashley Culicchia Cash owns The Graceful Host, a full-service New Orleans wedding planning and event design studio for clients who expect creativity and high-touch service. Shine On You Crazy Diamond!
Round: The most popular and timeless choice, round diamonds account for 75 percent of all diamonds sold. Round diamonds are brilliant cut and have 58 facets, maximizing their sparkle factor. A round diamond is a sure bet. Celebrity proponent: Carrie Underwood Princess: The second most popular shape, after the round diamond. The traditionally square or slightly rectangular, four-sided, pyramid shape is cut with many intricate facets creating lots of sparkle. A princess cut must be set withprongs protecting the corners and is beautiful as a solitaire. Celebrity proponent: Kate Bosworth Emerald: The name stems from the most traditional cut for emerald gemstones. Rectangular with long step-cut facets framing the open table (the face of the diamond), an emerald cut emphasizes the clarity of a diamond. Celebrity proponent: Jennifer Lopez Asscher: The same step-cut facets of an emerald cut, except square. Again, diamond clarity is a must for this shape. The dramatic cut evokes a vintage appeal. Celebrity proponent: Gwyneth Paltrow Cushion: The cushion cut is the perfect in-between of the princess and the round. Square or rectangular with rounded pillow-like corners, its large facets create a brilliant sparkle. Celebrity proponent: Hillary Duff Oval: An oval diamond has a beautiful brilliance created from intricate facets. Oval diamonds can accentuate long fingers or create the illusion of slender fingers for smaller hands. Celebrity proponent: Kirsten Dunst Marquise: Like the oval, a marquise diamond’s elongated shape can make fingers appear long and slender. Their brilliant cut can maximize carat weight and the interesting shape is perfect for those with a flair for the dramatic. Celebrity Proponent: Ashlee Simpson Pear: An ideal combination of a round and marquise diamond, the pear shaped diamond is pointed at one end. We love this unique shaped diamond in a solitaire setting. Celebrity proponent: Katherine Heigl Radiant: This square or rectangular diamond is defined by its brilliant-cut facet pattern in both the crown (bottom) and pavilion (top) of the stone. Celebrity proponent: Drew Barrymore Heart: A unique and obvious symbol of romantic love, the heart-shaped diamond has yet to make a comeback as a popular engagement ring style. Celebrity proponent: Lady Gaga

What to Wear Underneath It All k
Lingerie For the Perfect Fit on Your Perfect Day You can pick the most beautiful wedding gown imaginable, but if you don’t have the right foundation, the silhouette might not look the way you
expect on your wedding day. When you select your gown, be sure to think about the lingerie you’ll need. Take measurements while you’re still in the dress shop so you’ll know exactly what you need underneath. Consider things like strap width, the length of the illusion panel and how far the neckline plunges. Take pictures from each angle so you’ll remember how the dress fits after you leave the dress shop. And after you buy your undergarments, take them to dress fittings to ensure a proper fit. • Some dresses are more structured, so you may not require an underwire bra. Or, you can choose to have padding or a bra sewn into your dress to offer support. If you don’t plan to wear a bra, remember to get some skin-colored pasties. • You will also need to think about panty lines. If you are wearing a very fitted dress, a seamless thong or boyshort is the best option. If your skirt is wider or requires a crinoline, you have more options for underwear. Be sure to match the color of your underwear to your skin, not your dress. It will look more natural and give a smoother image. • On your wedding day, have adhesive tape on hand to account for perspiration or weight loss. You want to feel completely comfortable when you walk down the aisle!
