TIME IS FLEETING. That is what I learned this summer. With mere days until another school year begins, it seems that summer has slipped through our fingers yet again. We made the most of it, and we made many memories, and I am grateful. But time continues to pass as this month marks many milestones. My husband will celebrate a significant birthday this month (50), one child begins his journey into Junior High, and one child will embark on her last year of elementary school. Things are moving along as they are designed, yet the pace seems to quicken as we get older. My take away is that we do our best to appreciate these moments as they happen—even when we think we have nothing to appreciate—given that they can change instantaneously, and there is little we can do about it. As you gear up for whatever this transitional month may bring, join us as we meet two extraordinary women who bring countless people through the milestone of their first home purchase every day. Learn about what time has done to enhance modernday dentistry and meet some of the best in their field in our Northshore’s Top Dentists section. And take a peek at home decorating trends local designers are watching this fall. To my husband I wish a happy birthday filled with joy. To all children starting the school year, may you find success in the months ahead. Most of all, as we go about our busy days, here is hoping that we appreciate the moments that we might normally take for granted, because they can be easy to miss once they are gone.

OPAL
A: DYSMENORRHEA, or painful menstruation, is a common problem for many women. The uterus is a big muscle that contracts during the menstrual period to aid in menstrual flow. Usually the pain with the contractions is mild, lasting one to two days each month. However, if pain is severe enough to interfere with your daily activities, this is abnormal and needs further investigation. Symptoms of dysmenorrhea include: cramps or pain in the lower abdomen or lower back, pulling in the inner thighs, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and headache. Primary dysmenorrhea has no underlying

School is in but Summer’s not out IS SCHOOL STARTING earlier each year or is it my imagination? The kids may be heading back to school but that doesn’t mean summer is over. Sleeveless outfits and swimsuits are still in style with our hot southern weather. I recently saw an expectant Mom who enjoys the sleeveless outfits and swimsuits, but doesn’t enjoy the razor burn and bumps associated with shaving. She raved at how wonderful it was to be hair free without the ugly dark shadows shaving leaves behind. In addition, when you’re pregnant it can be challenging to address the bikini line. Hot temperatures continue until after September and fortunately we can still wear summer styles. The best part about Body Sugaring is that hair grows less and less after each session until it stops growing for good. Women in Middle Eastern countries have been using this method to remove their facial and body hair for over 2,000 years. It is all natural and it works! Male clients love the fact that their backs, ears and nostrils do not become irritated after a grooming session. This fall if your favorite team apparel seems a bit snug when you dress up for that football game, schedule a seaweed slimming wrap and lose up to 24 inches or more (results vary by individual). The combination of organic seaweed, massage and exfoliation you receive during your session will have you so relaxed, you may just sleep away the inches. When you awaken, the results you will see after being measured will have you cheering for joy. Go ahead and wear your white outfits this month. Just because September is around the corner doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing cool clothing because Labor Day is at our doorstep.
Dora Ochoa’s office, Body Sugaring USA Day Spa, is located in Mandeville at 1800 West Causeway Approach, Ste. 122. Call 985-626-5538 or visit bodysugaringusa.com. Dora is a Licensed Massage Therapist and is nationally certified in therapeutic massage and bodywork.

Northshore’s Top Dentists
Taking Personal Care to a New Level Dr. Charles A. Schof, Jr.— Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON
Every patient’s dental health is thoroughly evaluated so that Dr. Schof is able to develop a long-term plan to preserve oral health. “With every patient we are embarking on an ongoing relationship. Ultimately our goals are; comfort, appearance, longevity and health. My primary concern is that they get the healthiest mouth they want in their own time frame. You are in complete control of your oral health plan.” According to Dr. Schof, many patients may avoid the dentist because they dread being judged based on their oral health issues. “We do not judge anyone based on the health of their teeth,” he says. “We are all about moving forward. When I am looking at someone’s teeth, I am automatically assessing the long-term health of each tooth and how we will maintain it. We will work with every patient so that their treatment plan proceeds at their pace, and on par with their budget.” For nearly 20 years, Dr. Schof has seen the practice of dentistry advance by great margins. In his eyes the greatest strides have been made in early detection of potential problems, which leads to less dental intervention. “The best dentistry is really no dentistry,” he says. “We practice minimally invasive dentistry. We want to help you care for your oral health so that we face fewer problems down the road. Medical science will keep us all around longer, and we will need our teeth to enjoy a quality of life. My goal will always be to have my finger on the pulse so that I can give my patients the best that technology has to offer. I cannot imagine myself doing it any other way.” The Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence is located at 240 Dalwill Drive in Mandeville. Call 985-626-4401 to schedule an appointment or visit www.charlesschof.com.
Sophisticated Woman | August 2012
ROOTED IN OLD SCHOOL principles, Dr. Charles A. Schof, Jr. of the Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence, thrives on staying abreast of the newest in technological innovations in dentistry. “In my practice I believe in treating others the way I would want to be treated,” he says. “To that end, I have focused on learning and embracing cutting edge technology, which has allowed us to become incredibly efficient. The technology is there, it is better, so why not use it?” Efficiency is just one aspect of his practice Dr. Schof has worked to achieve. “Who wants to spend all of their free time at the dentist? I don’t. That is why I have spent so many hours learning the newest, most advanced technologies and techniques. I can literally perform your root canal and place your crown in the same day,” he says. His newest educational venture will begin soon as he embarks on a one year implant residency. Dr. Schof will tell you that his highly professional, personable staff is a large part of what he feels sets his practice apart. “This is the best staff I have ever had in my entire career,” he notes. “They are sincere, caring ladies who truly do care about every person who walks through the doors. They are literally the glue that holds it all together.” He also notes that everyone on his staff has a stellar work ethic. “When I perform a procedure on a patient, either myself or one of my staff members will follow up with that person within 24 hours. In my opinion, customer service is a lost art. We are determined every day to resurrect that art.” From their professional approach to every patient, to treating patients as welcome guests, patients often linger for awhile after a treatment just to catch up with the staff.

FOR NEARLY THREE decades, Dr. Jay Fagan has offered Northshore residents extensive, professional periodontal care with stellar results. “Periodontal disease can cause both loss of bone and tissue around teeth,” he says. “When this occurs, patients often need more intricate, skilled care which is what I have consistently provided over the past decades.” Treatment options for periodontitis can range from deep cleaning of the affected gums, bone grafts to promote tooth preservation, periodontal surgery, and the technologically advanced Laser-assisted new attachment procedure or LANAP Laser surgery. “The LANAP procedure involves very little pain and no sutures. We are able to stimulate bone regeneration with minimal discomfort and faster recovery time.” Dr. Fagan works hand in hand with many dentists and orthodontists to offer simple extractions, hygiene services, skin grafting and cuspid exposure procedures in order to prepare the mouth for braces. Aesthetic choices are available for people who would

like to change the look of their smile but do not necessarily face oral health issues, and for those who are missing one or more teeth. “Many people come to me because they feel that their smile is ‘gummy,’” he says. “This can be treated with aesthetic crown lengthening procedures. Some patients have ‘receding gums’ which can be corrected with skin grafting procedures. For people who are missing teeth, I will often place dental implants. ” Educated at the LSU School of Dentistry, Dr. Fagan proceeded to earn his Certificate of Periodontology from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. Since that time he has established roots on the Northshore, where he built his successful practice and has been a staff member at St. Tammany Parish Hospital for the past 25 years. “Periodontal disease does not only affect the mouth, it can lead to deeper systemic ailments. Early detection and intervention can produce the best result. Whether procedures are performed in my office or for those who need it, in a hospital setting, my primary concern is restoring the oral health of all of my patients.” Dr. Fagan’s office is located at 2301 N Highway 190 Suite 1 in Covington. FOR OVER TWO DECADES, board-certified orthodontist Dr. Laurie Fricke has made building beautiful smiles her mission. “I have had the privilege to improve smiles and to see my patients’ self-confidence soar. Giving each person the smile they deserve is very rewarding.” Her Covington office welcomes each patient with a crisp, clean environment, as well as a seasoned staff. “My team is exceptional, and we make it our priority to treat each patient’s needs with individual, specialized care,” Dr. Fricke notes. “This is not a one-size-fits-all practice. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated and a treatment plan is developed that will achieve the finest result in the most efficient way.” Treatment options are numerous as she offers Invisalign®, clear braces which do not stain and are barely visible, and traditional
braces integrated with the newest technology. These self-ligating brackets speed up the treatment process, cause less trauma to the inside of the mouth, and increase the time between follow-up appointments meaning fewer visits to the orthodontist’s office. “We are also dedicated to good oral hygiene and reward our patients accordingly. For instance, colors may be added to a well deserved smile.” Dr. Fricke says, “The goal of our treatment is a beautiful smile and a healthy bite.” On a personal note, when her own son
became involved with sports, Dr. Fricke found that his generic mouth guard did not fit. “I found a way to customize his sports guard, and since then I have treated many young athletes. Orthodontics has always been so rewarding for me,” Dr. Fricke says. “It is truly a blessing to be in a profession that I love and to change the lives of so many wonderful people.” Dr. Laurie Fricke can be reached at 985-892-2081. Her office is located at 2301 N. Hwy.190, Suite 7 in Covington. To learn more about treatment options visit makingsmilesnew.com.

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTO BY CLAIRE THOMAS
FOR AN ENTIRE DECADE, certified physician assistant Melanie Mire of Southern Pain and Neurological Consultants, LLC has worked closely with Dr. Paul J. Hubbell, III, Dr. Donald E. Richardson, FACS, and Dr. Thomas D. Schult to make a difference in the lives of people suffering from chronic pain. “Everything we do here is to improve the function and quality of the lives of our patients,” she says. “Our goal is to identify the source of the pain and find an interventional technique that will target it, and lessen a patient’s need to rely on medication as the main remedy to the problem.” Melanie says that the patients she evaluates have pain that affects the neck, back, extremities or face. “Often we find that patients suffer from the degeneration of discs, which causes bone on bone contact at the facet joint,” Melanie notes. “When we gather the evidence to support our findings of degenerative disc disease, we can then offer interventional treatment.” Temporary pain relief can be achieved through a diagnostic test block injection that places numbing medicine on the affected nerve using small needles

to interrupt sensation in the joint. A second procedure, a treatment named radiofrequency, involves surrounding the nerve with heat using small needles in order to ablate them. In turn, the nerve branch will cease to send pain signals to the brain. Relief can last anywhere from eight to eighteen months. Minimally invasive interventional modalities are available to treat patients who suffer from intractable post-surgery pain syndromes, peripheral nerve injuries, face pain and central pain syndromes from multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries. “Spinal cord stimulators, deep brain stimulators and continuous infusion pumps are just a handful of additional techniques we offer to help the chronically ill deal with symptoms that detract from their quality of life,” Melanie says. “There is no doubt that this field is challenging, but when you do see the success stories happen, it is pretty rewarding.” Southern Pain and Neurological Consultants, LLC is located at 64026 Highway 434, #230 in Lacombe, 1-800-277-1265. WHEN HE WAS voted Northshore’s Best Dentist for 2011, Dr. John J. Killeen was humbled and grate2 0 11 ful. “I appreciate everyone who voted for me, all of my patients and of course, my staff for their passion,” he says. During his many years in practice, Dr. Killeen has seen marked advancements in dentistry. “In the past, we used a sharp object to locate an area of decay. Now, we use laser technology like DIAGNOdent and digital x-rays.” But he notes that the greatest advancements are in the area of cosmetic dentistry. “We now have the ability to actually know and see what a beautiful smile looks like,” he says. “We analyze every detail of someone’s face from their skin tone to the shape of their face to formulate their best smile. When we are finished, patients have a renewed sense of confidence and really, a renewed sense Dr. John J. Killeen of self.” For patients who have no teeth or who, for some reason, have to lose all of their teeth, implant technology not only can change a patient’s appearance, but also helps them to regain their ability to chew and use their teeth normally, which actually changes their lives. Dr. Killeen is able to extract teeth and place implants and teeth all in one appointment. The patient is never without teeth. “Patients are so appreciative they sometimes shed tears of joy when implants are placed. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to help people overcome this handicap and regain their quality of life.” The Northshore’s Best

Provisional Custody by Mandate LOUISIANA HAS SPECIFIC laws that govern who may care for your minor child (children) in your absence. Everyone with children should execute a Provisional Custody document when you go out of town and leave your kids behind. If your child becomes ill in your absence, this document assures that the caretaker of your child will be able to make medical and surgical decisions on their The Northshore’s behalf. It allowsBest your caretaker to speak with the child’s school and many other important decisions that you probably take for granted. Even when you leave your children with your own parents, without this document, the grandparents have no legal right to speak on your children’s behalf. This can be very easily alleviated by the parents (or the custodial parent if divorced) of a minor child executing a document called a “Provisional Custody by Mandate”. The parents appoint whom they choose to be the “Provisional Custodian” in their absence. The document may be for any length of time but may not exceed one year from execution. We generally advise to have the document be valid for the entire year and whenever the kids are with “Grandma” for the rest of the year, she
may rely on this document. Additionally, you may choose whomever you wish, as it may be a friend or neighbor, there is no relation requirement. Most folks never even think about this when they go away for a long weekend away from the kids, or more importantly, if you happen to be in Europe for a few weeks! You do not need a lawyer to draft this document as it can be readily found on the internet if you “Google” this topic. However, you will need to have the document witnessed and notarized. Keep one form blank, and pick an annual date you can easily remember (your child’s birthday), then every year go to a notary public and have them updated. Hopefully, your child will never need to use this document, but in my line of work I always “plan for the worst and pray for the best”.

For the last 30 years, the non-profit organization has promoted and supported the arts locally by offering professional exhibitions, arts education through classes and lectures, as well as nonprofessional exhibitions for local aspiring artists,” says Executive Director, Melissa Griffin. “To further enhance our commitment to the community, the Hammond Regional Arts Center will begin to offer grants and scholarships for arts education.” Owned and operated by Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), The Columbia Theatre breathes life into the Hammond cultural scene year-round. From concerts, to theatrical productions to special events, the theater has become an integral part of the arts community since it was renovated and re-opened in 2002. IT IS SAFE TO SAY that what we define as culturally significant in South Louisiana may differ from other areas of the world. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. The roots of our culture start simply enough—a down-home history peppered with people who came from around the globe to call Louisiana home. Yet they evolve into richness in music, artistry, creativity, craftsmanship and even into the decadent world of the pomp and circumstance of Mardi Gras royalty. The Northshore in particular is rich in history, talent and tradition. Slidell encourages love of the arts for all ages and all genres as they make the most of the Slidell Cultural Center, the Slidell Municipal Auditorium, and host festivals and outdoor concerts throughout the year. As with every other cultural season, the lineup this season promises excitement and variety well into 2013. Touted as the highlight of this year’s calendar, From the Vaults of New Orleans Museum of Art: Picasso, Miró and Matisse, debuts in the spring of 2013 just as Slidell’s Olde Towne festival, Arts Evening, moves from the fall into the spring. The exhibit begins March 2 and runs through April 12, 2013. On loan from the New Orleans Museum of Art, expect to see ceramics by Picasso and works on paper by Miró and Matisse. Thanks to the St. Tammany Art Association, Covington also plays host to the National Juried Artists Exhibition, now in its 47th year. This exhibition, going on now, is open to artists from around the United States and runs through August 11. The St. Tammany Art Association hosts events year-round to enhance the thriving artistic community in Covington such as the upcoming DIVA Exhibition and fundraiser to benefit breast cancer awareness, which begins August 18. What began as a traveling educational program known as “Museum Without Walls,” is now evolving into the concrete vision of the Junior League of Greater Covington for the Children's Museum of St. Tammany. Currently in the planning phases, the vision for the museum is becoming clear as the St. Tammany Parish Government has dedicated land at Koop Drive, and the Junior League continues to raise money to see the project through to completion. The museum is slated to serve as yet another avenue for the youth of St. Tammany to grow in their knowledge and appreciation of the cultural arts.

Is Wii Effective in Reducing Falls?
The Northshore’s Best
8:00 am | Monday, July 23
WHEN YOU’RE A KID or even a young adult, falls can be funny or just mildly embarrassing. However, with advanced age, falls can become downright deadly. Once an older person hurts themselves from a fall, the required bed rest that is needed for recovery could be more damaging than the fall itself. For many older people, a fall is the incident that leads them to the often-dreaded nursing home. So much time, money and resources are spent in learning how to best prevent falls in older adults. As published in the June edition of the Journal of Aging Research, it was found that regular Wii Fit workouts proved as effective as a robust walking routine in reducing the risk for falling in older people with mild Alzheimer’s disease. The study compared the fall risk of individuals before and after an eight week exercise program. Before they started exercising, they were at a high risk for falls. But their fall risk was significantly decreased by the end of the eight week program.
August 2012
…with advanced age, falls can become downright deadly. Does that mean that we should all go out and buy Wii’s for our folks? Well, it’s probably not for everyone. If someone has compromised balance already, then they probably need supervised exercise in order to safely obtain results. But sure, if you have okay balance and are looking for a way to improve it, then the Wii is probably a great option. Some physical therapy clinics utilize the Wii for balance training in older adults. Not only does it encourage us to move more quickly than we would normally during exercise, it is also just a lot more fun. And don’t we all want to have more fun when we’re exercising?

Lending Relationships for Life— Carrie Sanders and Melissa Brackley, GMFS Lending

IT IS EASY to love your profession when day after day you watch people achieve the dream of owning their own home. For loan officer Carrie Sanders and her colleague, Melissa Brackley, licensed loan originator, every day at GMFS Lending is quite a pleasure. “It is always a thrill for me to see someone move into their first home,” Carries says. “But the process to get to that point can be confusing, both for first-time homeowners as well as people who have purchased a home in the past. This is where we come into the picture. We also handle refinancing of current home loans, so we can help clients with every aspect of their home financing.” At different phases of their lives, Carrie a happily married mother and grandmother, and Melissa a happily married mother of two young children— both women work toward the same professional purpose. Educating their clients and walking them through the multi-step process in obtaining a home loan is their ultimate goal. “Our job is to navigate the process for people looking for a new mortgage product, or seeking to refinance their current mortgage,” says Melissa. “We pride ourselves on taking an in-depth look at every client’s profile to determine what product is right for them, and what needs to be done to obtain that product. We realize that not every person who walks through our doors fits the same mold.” With so many options—conventional mortgages, FHA Loans, Rural Development Loans, VA Loans (with 100 percent financing), reverse mortgages—GMFS is poised to walk everyone from the least experienced first-time client to the senior citizen in their golden years, through the proper steps to find a product that will suit their needs. Carrie and Melissa each possess exceptional financial proficiency, with a
“It is always a thrill for me to see someone move into their first home,” Carrie says. LEFT: Carrie Sanders RIGHT: Melissa Brackley involved. “Clients benefit from this too, because they can come in and meet the processors and they can correspond with them and ask questions,” Melissa says. “Many places do not offer this opportunity. We all work together towards the same goal.” Ultimately Carrie and Melissa are focused on building trusting relationships with their clients. “The key in choosing the right person to handle your mortgage or refinance is to find someone you are comfortable with and whom you feel that you can trust,” Carrie says, “If you are uncomfortable, you are not in the right place.” Both ladies recommend consulting a loan officer at least three to six months before you plan to purchase a home to begin getting everything in proper order. “You have to find the person who has your best interest at heart,” Melissa says. “And the person working with you should be accessible to answer any of your questions. I have had first-time clients who emailed me on a daily basis, and that is why we are here.” As a born and raised Northshore resident, Melissa and her husband, Thomas, have chosen to raise their own family here as well. “We like to fish, swim and hang out with our family,” she says. “And of course we are huge Saints fans.” Somehow, she and her husband find the time to coach their son’s soccer team
as well. Melissa is also active in raising money for cancer research through her annual participation in both Relay for Life and Light the Night events. “As a local, I appreciate everything the Northshore has to offer,” she says. “It is so great to be able to live and work in my own community, and feel like I am helping people reach a goal in the process.” Carrie is also fully immersed in her life here on the Northshore. From taking an active mentorship role in her church alongside her husband BJ, to her affiliation with the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce, the Women’s Council of Realtors, and the Professional Women of St. Tammany, she thoroughly enjoys the Northshore. “I am loving life here. I enjoy meeting so many wonderful people both through my professional and personal life,” she says. “And I am fortunate to have my family close by so that I can enjoy my children and my grandchild. Someone wise once told me to do what I love and to love what I do, and I truly am. This is what makes it so worthwhile and so very gratifying.” GMFS Lending is located at 114 Terra Bella Unit A, in Covington in TerraBella Village. To contact Carrie, call 985-231-1648. combined twenty-plus years experience in finance. “One of my mentors once told me to always do right by the customer,” Melissa remembers. “And that is what we do every day. We will not recommend a mortgage or refinance option solely based on obtaining another client.” As a long-established company that began in Baton Rouge, and now has a presence in over 25 different states, GMFS Lending is a place where every client is given the full opportunity to get what they need. “If someone comes to us and for some reason they are unable to qualify at the time, we determine the problem and take the proper steps to help them reach their goal, by working collaboratively with the client,” Carrie says. “Everyone here is so well-rounded and has so much experience that we are able to work on the structure of every loan.” Because the entire loan procedure is handled in the GMFS office, clients have a faster, more accurate and more efficient result. “We are like a little family here,” Carrie notes. “Our loan processors are here in our office, so instead of sending an email or placing a phone call to someone in another state, we simply walk down the hall and have a face-to-face discussion.” For clients, this means a solid relationship with everyone

I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) WHO COULD IMAGINE a southern landscape devoid of a tree’s presence? Here on the Northshore, our live oaks provide shade from the blazing summer sun and design elegance to any spot they grace. The tall pines tower over gardens, homes and fields. Like any cherished possession, trees require regular and proper care to stay strong and healthy. Deeply watering a tree’s roots is the number one rule in tree maintenance. That means letting the sprinkler go for about an hour, slowly to get the water soaked into the soil. If the water runs off, do some aeration to the soil around the base of the tree. Improper watering can contribute to tree roots coming up to the surface, which in turn contributes to a weak root system. Remember that roots are what hold a tree in the ground. Keep the ground around the base of the tree mulched. Do not put mulch directly against the tree bark. That could cause
tree rot. Make a mound about three to five inches away from the bark and spread mulch outside of the mound to keep moisture over the root area. Ground cover also helps with this. Trees should be pruned regularly to promote even growth and to remove dead weight. Dead branches are a hazard so remove them as soon as possible. Plant trees at least 25 feet away from a house and preferably away from other trees. Almost all trees enjoy sunlight, so planting too close together means one tree will crowd the other. Check your gardens and lawns for little trees that sprout from seeds (acorns or pine cones). Remove these when they are young to keep unwanted trees from sprouting up. Transplant the seedlings in spots where you need trees. Remember that citrus, maples, oaks and pines all do really well in our area. Local nurseries have an abundance of varieties or check with your local AG Center for advice. Sometimes you can obtain seedlings for free from different forestry organizations. Finally, remember that trees not only provide beauty, they are also home to many of our wild brethren and they are the providers of clean air.

BILLIE COMEAUX will tell you that what sets their family business apart is that it is truly a family owned and operated business. “My husband and I, and two of our three children are heavily involved in the day to day operations of our stores,” she says. American Factory Direct Furniture is known for quality home furnishings at affordable prices. “Because we attend five or six markets a year, we purchase finer quality items in large amounts shipped to our local distribution center and pass those savings on to our clients. This enables us to carry items that fit into every price point and to compete with national stores with better quality for our clients. Our complimentary in-home design service is an added value to our already low prices.” When Billie married her husband, Bob, his family was already in the furniture business. “We have always had a passion for the business. We spent our honeymoon attending

FASHION EDITOR'S PICKS
Good morning class,
Today’s lesson is on the wearability of platform shoes for all those skeptics out there. With a little help from my sister, the engineer, we’ve calculated with geometric proof that platforms are not as steep of an angle as you think. So try on a pair and give yourself an A+.
These colorful strappy wedges by TOM’S would make a great addition to your wardrobe, $69. Available at Columbia Street Mercantile. 985-809-1690.
X° = tan-1
B = C – A (B/D); Y° = tan-1 (C/D) X° < Y°

In other words, the greater the height of the toe platform, the less of an arch angle, thus more comfy!

And you thought you'd never use the math you learned in school! Apply the formula on these elevating Dee Keller wedges available at The Villa, $385, (p.s. They are now 50% off!) 985-626-9797.

THE PIGMENT CELLS in our skin are the extroverts of our bodies, reacting quickly to our surroundings and announcing their presence to everyone in sight. Genetics determine not only how many of these cells (called melanocytes) populate our skin, but also how and when they react to produce darkened skin tones. These tenacious melanocytes are responsible for general skin darkening (aka a tan), discrete sunspots on fair skin due to chronic UV exposure, and splotchy darkening on female faces in response to hormonal fluxes during pregnancy, menopause and contraceptive usage. Although we can’t change the nature of these cellular extroverts which cause pigmentation, we can minimize their behavior by preventing Party & Events Catering: and/or reversing the extra pigment generated Bridal Luncheons by environmental or internal factors. Some deep-penetrating antioxidant serums are actually stored under the skin’s surface and will not wash or rub off, providing longer lasting protection than most creams or lotions. If our extroverted pigment cells have already announced their presence in the form of splotches or sunspots, laser-type devices have the ability to target any extradark cells and minimize or erase this excess pigment. Can Neurofeedback Work For You? PARENT TESTIMONIAL WRITTEN BY STACY PILOTE
5:00 pm | Friday, July 20
LANDAU–KLEFFNER SYNDROME (LKS) is a rare neurological disorder that usually occurs in children between the ages of three and seven years, and affects the parts of the brain that control comprehension and speech. Typically, children with LKS develop normally, but begin to lose their receptive and expressive language skills. Early manifestation of the disease correlates with poor language skills and the appearance of night seizures. Michael began to lose the ability to speak at the age of three and after an EEG confirmed nocturnal seizures, was diagnosed with LKS at the age of four. For the next 11 years sign language was his main form of communica-

tion. At the age of 14 Michael’s EEG showed severe brain damage. Prior to neurofeedback, Michael was able to comprehend only 30 percent of what was verbalized to him. He was participating in group sports at his age level, but he was unable to understand the concepts of the game. He needed a full time interpreter during his core classes. It was not until Michael started neurofeedback that improvement was noted. After 40 sessions the results were amazing. As a mom I can say “he is perfectly normal now.” Michael still has a lot of catch-up work to do, but he no longer requires an interpreter. He takes no medication, is on the high school basketball team, and has a wonderful group of friends. He even has a learner’s permit! As concerned parents we spent a lot of resources on experimental treatments to no avail. All of the medicines and treatments in the world do not even compare with neurofeedback. Michael is an active 10th grader in St. Tammany Parish. Please feel free to contact Stacy Pilote (Michael’s mother) with any questions at 985-869-3399.

The Northshore’s Best
Alike WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
I AM ON a multi-leg trip and am writing this article somewhere over an ocean. So far, the legs have included three countries and nine cities. In each airport, I go through security points and immigration checks as do the thousands of others also boarding planes. Security checks and clearances allow us to enter designated areas and other countries. Our documentation proves we are who we say we are, and not someone else. Yet for all of our language and customs differences, we are traveling for the same reasons. We are moving about countries because of people or work, or some combination of both. And, we have another similarity despite language barriers and expression—we have the same emotions. We note the emotional states, and based our perceptions, decide to approach or distance from others. Some emotional states are: anticipation—studying faces, looking for familiarity in someone or someplace. How I looked in Guatemala waiting for my son, David. Sadness—how I was as I left my newborn grandson, Jet, in Guatemala. Happiness—looking up, smiling, arms open. How I felt arriving in Canada. Fearful—how a non-native, Englishspeaking, fellow traveler looks asking about connecting flight information. Anger, manifested with knitted eyebrows and agitated movements. Paranoia, or always looking behind. How a few people look going through security. Calm with relaxed features, quiet voices. How we look settling in seeing the unlighted seatbelt sign. Keeping one’s emotions in check allows for a happier travel experience. What this trip is teaching me overall is that allowing ourselves ample time for connections helps us get along better, and that neither the boundaries of language nor miles are impermeable.

THE THINGS THEY CARRIED, a work of fiction by Tim O’Brien, is a fascinating collection of interrelated short stories about war, each building upon each other. The book begins with stories of physical objects that soldiers carry, but as the reader becomes more immersed in the daily lives of the infantrymen, he can feel the psychological weights that the soldiers accumulate and carry as the days pass. The well-crafted descriptions of events in these stories carry the reader into the confused, emotional darkness of soldiers’ psyches, particularly those who seem to be suffering from post-traumatic stress. The veracity of the stories is a result of the author’s experiences as a foot soldier in Vietnam. In the book, he appears as one of the characters of the Alpha Company. Other characters appear as the platoon leader, the medic, and the radiotelephone operator. Others appear only in the soldiers’ reminiscences. The Things They Carried was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the French Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger. It is a book that begs to be explored, and fortunately St. Tammany Parish residents will have the opportunity to discuss it during September, as the parish participates in a program called “The Big Read.” Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried is the featured literature. Thanks to a partnership with Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the library administration has received a grant from Arts Midwest, which will provide funding for several programs related to the book. This month watch for notices in the newspaper, library website and other information sources for a full description of events. Tim O’Brien. The Things They Carried. І LEADERS Expo Gives Local Businesses a Growth Tool
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THE MISSION OF the Ponchatoula Chamber is “to promote and advance the economic development of the Ponchatoula community.” With this in mind, on Tuesday, August 14, we will host the 16th annual Business Expo to heighten awareness of the benefits of shopping and doing business locally. Past Expos have been overwhelmingly successful for the whole community, making it a much anticipated yearly event. Business participation in the Expo affords participants the opportunity to meet face-to-face with prospective customers plus offers a fun, interesting and informative venue to showcase their goods and services to the community and other businesses—an effective tool for a company’s growth.
It is important to remember that every dollar spent in Ponchatoula at local businesses returns to us through tax income, employee wages, school and non-profit programming support, local sports team sponsorships, and the support of other local businesses. The Chamber means business and is proud to sponsor the premier business and professional event in Ponchatoula. Growth of Ponchatoula and the surrounding community equals opportunity and development for local business. Whether you’ve participated before or are new to this event, you are sure to enjoy and reap the rewards of the evening.
Citizens’ Voices Heard
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
AS AN ELECTED public servant, it is my job to listen to our citizens’ comments, both positive and negative. And that’s a good thing. Some of the biggest complaints I hear from citizens pertain to blighted properties in their neighborhoods. In an effort to continue moving forward from Katrina, the city has stepped up with funds to demolish abandoned properties. In the last month, three properties have been demolished with plans for more still ahead. Following the letter of the law, we make every effort to notify and pursue action from negligent homeowners. If those efforts are unsuccessful, the city has no choice but to condemn and possibly demolish those properties in an effort to clean up the city. Among the many positive comments I receive about Slidell are in regards the abundance of cultural events
in our city. The Department of Cultural and Public Affairs has just released their calendar of events for the 2012–2013 Cultural Season, with amazing events planned. One of the highlights of the new season is sure to be From the Vaults of the New Orleans Museum of Art: Picasso, Miró and Matisse exhibit, which will feature a number of exquisite works by some of the most significant artists of the 20th century. There will also be a 3D art exhibit, Spencer’s Theatre of Illusion, and even a fiddling poet from Alaska. Most of these events are free for our citizens, thanks to our Cultural Season Sponsors. If your business or organization is interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Cultural and Public Affairs at 985-646-4375. For more information, visit www.slidell.la.us.
Moving Mandeville Forward

DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
WHILE OTHER CITIES around the country are struggling through this economy, it is my pleasure to report to you that Mandeville’s financial health is sound and secure. Our sales tax is holding steady and we will continue our conservative spending practices and planned infrastructure, to maintain our quality of service as well as our bond rating. In the past two years we have improved our budget process and we will continue to refine practices to accurately predict revenue and expense requirements. One challenge facing our new administration over the next four years is to move Mandeville forward while still maintaining the natural beauty and serenity we have enjoyed for many years. We will do everything possible to protect our natural resources and our environment through progress that preserves the culture.
A mayor and council are not alone. We rely on our relationships with state and parish government, and all municipalities. We rely on citizen involvement on many levels including, Planning and Zoning, Parks and Parkways and Keep Mandeville Beautiful. Temporary citizen committees to take up several specific tasks like long range finance, the operations study and a historic district study. We appreciate their valuable time and recognize their important contribution to our city. We have increased communication with our citizens through the city web site, new water bill, cultural calendar and outbound notices of city events. Visit us at www.cityofmandeville.com or on our City of Mandeville Facebook page.

Community Health Center Serves the Needs of All
WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
THE RIBBON WAS CUT on the St. Tammany Community Health Center on August 17, 2011. The Center, located on Robert Boulevard in Slidell, provides services to both uninsured citizens on a sliding fee scale as well as to citizens with insurance. A second center is planned for the Covington area. With one year of operations complete, the Center is seeing about 250 adult and child patients each week in the Medical Clinic. The Health Center is available to ensure that children have all the immunizations required to begin the school year. Many of the patients, and their families, are between jobs caught in the window where their old insurance has lapsed and their new insurance has not started. This is a vulnerable time for families and the Center plays an important role as a bridge during this period. Mental Health professionals see about 132 patients
each week for therapy. The Center is a critical partner in the Suicide Prevention Initiative that provides assistance to citizens in need, their families, and to emergency personnel who respond to suicide attempts. To date, none of the citizens who agreed to enter this program has had a repeat suicide attempt. St. Tammany Parish assists with this cost through the parish’s public health millage. A Community Health Center also has related community-wide benefits. By making health care available on a sliding scale, those in need are less likely to visit the emergency rooms in our hospitals. This keeps health care costs down while allowing doctors and nurses more time for life threatening situations.
If you, or someone you know, could benefit from these services, please call the St. Tammany Community Health Center at 985-607-0400.
By making health care available on a sliding scale, those in need are less likely to visit the emergency rooms in our hospitals.
Healthcare Reform
WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER
Sophisticated Woman | August 2012
OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
38
ON MARCH 20, 2010 the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act passed Congress. We continue to try to understand it. As the voice of business, it is our responsibility to inform our members on issues that directly impact their bottom line. We would like to share the following provided by the U.S. Chamber. “At the end of the day, this law is largely about the worthy goal of expanding access to coverage, rather than the pressing imperative of addressing explosive health care costs. While the law makes a number of changes to reduce spending, particularly in the Medicare program, several more provisions will actually increase health care costs over and above costs that would have happened without enactment of health reform. Therefore, at least from the perspective of controlling costs, the law is likely worse than doing nothing at all. “Our opinion is that the combination of reduced
flexibility, new taxes, new penalties, new benefit mandates, new reporting requirements and uncertainty about implementation, far outweighs the potential benefits to employers of the new law. We have significant work to do to educate policy makers, employees and their families to understand these negatives and to help effectuate positive change. “Our goal should be to promote expanded coverage and hold costs down. Doing one without the other makes little sense. While challenging, this combined task is not impossible. We have outlined common sense solutions, and look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to undo some of the damage that has been done by the health reform law. “Many of the reforms will not take effect until 2014, so there is some time to make adjustments. Together we can effect change that will promote a high value, efficient health system.”
As the voice of business, it is our responsibility to inform our members on issues that directly impact their bottom line.
