Sophisticated Woman was able to get this “Enterprising Woman” to slow down long enough to prepare for and enjoy her cover photo shoot. CHANGE OF HEART

December 2012 Dr. Edward Brown, Jr Dr. Edward Brown III EVERY ADVENT SEASON, our family enjoys our second generation tradition of reading stories around the dinner table. The goal of my children, as I may have mentioned before, is to make their sappy mother cry. It really does not take much. One of our favorites is the story of a man who takes underprivileged children shopping every year to buy Christmas gifts for their families. This year, he tries to take two young brothers to a toy store, but they insist that he take them to a shoe store. He does and the boys pull out a pattern of a man’s shoe on brown paper and ask the salesman if he has any shoes to fit the pattern, which they drew of their Daddy’s foot while he was sleeping. They want to buy him a new pair of shoes, they tell him, so that he can go out and look for work. He finds the right shoe, and asks the boys how much money they have. They had much less than the shoes cost. The salesman tells

them, “Just for today, these shoes are on sale for four dollars.” The boys whoop with delight when they realize they will have enough money. Later, the father sees the man who sold them the shoes, and now employed, thanks him for his generosity and tells him that his kindness changed his life. To his surprise, the salesman tells him that the selflessness of his children changed his. In this issue, our Enterprising Woman offers many ways for you to brighten someone’s holiday. Here is hoping that the beauty of the season touches your heart! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us here at Sophisticated Woman.

І NEUROFEEDBACK

Neurofeedback— What’s All the Fuss? NEUROFEEDBACK (NFB) HAS been gaining popularity over the last several years as an option to alleviate symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), autism, anxiety, insomnia and other disorders. It is a safe, non-invasive technique that retrains the brain by utilizing a learning process. Over the course of the sessions, training with NFB has been shown to improve cognitive function, attention, mood, anxiety, sleep and behavior. It simply balances the brainwaves, thus increasing the level of function.

It simply balances the brainwaves, thus increasing the level of function. To identify the areas of the brain that NFB training would benefit, brain mapping, or a QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) is performed during the initial assessment. This gives a snapshot picture of the functionality of the brain. It evaluates how effectively the different regions of the brain communicate and transfer information in a colored format, and pinpoints the areas that need adjustment. Each training session begins with the placement of sensors on the scalp in areas designated on the QEEG. During the session, the practitioner adjusts the goals as the client plays a game or watches a movie. The game or movie is controlled solely by the client’s brain activity. When the brainwaves are balanced, the movie or game plays; likewise when the brainwaves are not balanced, the movie or game pauses or dims. So over time, the brain learns to retrain itself. Sessions are usually 45 minutes long, twice a week.

Brain Works Academy (Northshore NEURO Services, Inc.) provides brain training to enhance quality of life. Cheryl Schoenberger, RRT, neurofeedback technician, has been a healthcare provider for over 30 years. Please contact us at (985) 809-7077 for a complimentary consultation.

When given the opportunity, Christ Episcopal School Junior, Karen Robbins says yes to service, through activities like a Key Club Halloween food drive, the clean up for Lake Pontchartrain, and collecting supplies for the Humane Society. As a living tribute to 4-H, a club she is heavily involved in, she helped plan and construct the 4-H wetlands garden at Christ Episcopal School. This honor roll student has earned the 2012 Distinguished Service Award for Christ Episcopal School. In her free time, Karen likes to show sheep and spend time with her family. Karen has always had a special place in her heart for children. She has actively worked with them through Head Start St. Tammany in various capacities. “Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed caring for other children.” Couple this with her love of science, and it is perfectly clear why she would choose the path she hopes to pursue. “I plan to attend LSU and study pre-med, with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician. It is an ideal match of my love of science and children” Congratulations to Karen Robbins, our December Charter Business HERO Award winner.

Each year, my parents create a scavenger hunt for one of our presents—usually the one that they are most excited to give us. The clues lead us all over our house, sometimes even to the nearby park. My sister Beverly and I love this special addition of excitement to giftgiving, and we plan to continue this tradition with our own children. —Mary-Brent Brown, Kids Wanna Help®, November 2012

Yuletide Reminiscence

Sophisticated Woman | December 2012

Our 2012 Enterprising Women share their favorite holiday memories and traditions.

8

Every Christmas Eve I have dinner for all of my husband Billy’s family and mine too. We also let the girls open one present on Christmas Eve after everyone is gone. I have done this for 24 years. And everyone would be upset if I did not make my traditional pound cake for the occasion! —Marta Bragg, The Villa, February 2012

Christmas is definitely a favorite holiday in the Stumm family! Each year, we spend weeks planning our meal and then invite as many friends to join us as we can. We love to include others that may not be able to make it home for the holidays. We have a small family, so we like to make our family table as big as possible on Christmas! It’s all about being with great friends, enjoying great food! —Courtney, Celie & Sibyl Stumm, Pinkberry, October 2012

On Christmas Eve, my husband and I bake all day long. We love getting up early and going to the grocery store to buy tons of baking supplies. We see how many varieties of cookies/bars we can make with the different ingredients! The kids love cooking with us but they enjoy tasting the best! —Allyson H. McMahon, Three Rivers Services, March 2012

Christmas is my favorite time of year! I have been accused of taking the holiday a little too far, with the excessive boxes of decorations and the transformation that our home goes through over the holiday season. From the five or six Christmas trees to the singing snowman, and life-size Santa, it’s delightful to see the finished display. But the most important part of the holiday is the opportunity to spend time with friends and family, a time to gather, a time for giving, and a time for remembering the best gift of all—the gift of our Savior Jesus Christ—for without Him, all of this would be for nothing. —Carrie Sanders, GMFS Lending, August 2012

Every year we celebrate the Holidays by having a huge family feast at my home on Christmas Day. We then leave for the mountains in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and stay until New Years. This is a great tradition for us and even though my parents have been divorced for 19 years, we still vacation together as a family. This is such a blessing to me and my brother! —Jenny Pennington, Mira Mia, December 2012

Some of my fondest Christmas memories growing up as a child, were when my grandfather would dress up as Santa Claus and call out our names. We would sit on his lap and receive our gifts. Some of our family traditions stem from my mother and grandmother’s heritage as they are from Uxbridge, England. Every year we make homemade sausage rolls, Yorkshire pudding, lemon and mincemeat tarts, and pies. —Melissa Brackley,GMFS Lending, August 2012

My fondest holiday tradition continues to this day. A requirement for my undergrad and graduate degrees in History required Latin. Shopping in Napa prior to final exams, I found Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas written in Latin! Upon arriving home from California, so began the Christmas Eve tradition of reading The Grinch aloud to family and friends while we enjoyed champagne and dessert until time to attend midnight mass. —Julia Deal, The Law Offices of Julia Deal, September 2012

Embarrassingly enough, I fondly remember sneaking into the kitchen to pinch off crispy wing tips from the turkey when mom wasn’t looking! I also loved the way the jellied cranberry sauce looked—it held that ribbed pattern from being in the can! I ate that sugary sauce with EVERYTHING. —Sherrí Hansen, Culinary Kids, July 2012

Sophisticated Woman | December 2012

The family tradition I most remember and love so much, and now continue with my own family, is a Christmas morning scavenger hunt. My mom would put our first rhyming clue on the tree with our name on it. That would lead us to our first gift, we would bring the gift back to where everyone was, and open it. Now, realizing the time and effort she spent making rhymes for each clue, I appreciate the magic she brought to each Christmas. —Grace Comeaux-Piro, January 2012

THE HOLIDAYS ARE here and the spirit of giving is in the air. Make your holiday gift one that your loved ones would not go out and buy for themselves. This year, surprise them with the gift of health and well-being. It says “I love you and I care about giving you stress relief.” This gift can also be a break to ease sore muscles and weary joints. A massage releases the entire body in one hour, or you can enjoy a two-hour session. It can be customized with warming stones, as a pre-natal session, or even shared with your special someone during a couples massage. For the athlete in your life, give a sports massage that is deep tissue in nature and focuses on the runner’s legs, or the tennis player’s upper body. Massage relieves the body of toxins and releases endorphins that naturally lift the spirit and bring joy.

Surprise your loved one with the gift of health.

Diversity in Dough GLUTEN FREE SEEMS to be all the rage. There are a variety of reasons why people choose a gluten free diet. For example, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his wife Brittany faithfully adhere to one because of food allergies. Celebrity talk show host Elisabeth Hassleback even penned a book about her health struggles and what ultimately led her to live gluten free. Some choose to go gluten free because they have heard it offers health benefits, irregardless of their dietary status. For Sherrí Hansen, owner of Culinary Kids in Mandeville, the discovery that one of her own children had Celiac Disease was ultimately what prompted her to learn how to provide gluten free choices for her family. The recipe below, provided by Sherrí, offers a blank gluten free canvas on which to build a myriad of delicious dishes. Enjoy! Gluten Free (GF) Pie Dough Recipe 2 cups of your favorite GF flour 1/4 cup cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon xanthium gum 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 cup powder sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 5 ounces palm shortening, cold cut into cubes 1/4 cup ice water Mix all dry ingredients into a bowl, use your hands or a dough cutter to cut the fat into the dry mixture. Work the mixture until the fat is pea-sized. Add half of the water and work it into dough. If too dry add the other half of the water and work it into the dough. The dough should stick together when pressed. Divide the dough into two halves and wrap each half in plastic wrap pressed into a disc. Refrigerate for an hour. When cold, use flour to roll out for tarts, pie crust and even cookies. Culinary Kids is located at 3441 East Causeway Approach, Suite G in Mandeville. Call 985-727-5553 to schedule an event, or visit www.culinarykidsns.com to find out more. Visit them on facebook at Culinary Kids Mandeville.

Experience A World Of Taste Oil & Vinegar is a “culinary gift shop” that combines a wide range of international food and cooking products in alluring, Mediterranean-style surroundings. Our product line and everything we do reflects our focus— being

“PASSIONATE ABOUT TASTE.”

Experience Epicurean Excellence Pemmie Sheasby wants guests to experience the same evocative sensation she did the first time she walked into an Oil & Vinegar shop in Spokane. “When I tasted and smelled these products from all of the places I had been throughout the world, and they were so true to what I remembered, I fell in love with the concept and the superiority of the international products. It reminded me of being abroad.” After thoughtful consideration and extensive research, Pemmie decided to bring the Oil & Vinegar concept here, to the Northshore. “Because of my travels, and living in South Africa for five years, I have been exposed to many culinary pockets,” Pemmie notes. “At Oil & Vinegar, you will taste authentic products, directly imported from their countries of origin.”

Sophisticated Woman | December 2012

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

JENNY PENNINGTON ALWAYS knew she wanted to own her own business. At the age of 25, in Slidell, she plunged in and ran with the idea of an affordably priced, on-trend, niche jewelry store, which she affectionately named, Mira Mia. “When I could not find the beautiful sterling silver, monogrammed necklace locally, that I had seen online—it hit me—I immediately realized the need for a jewelry store with elegant, unique items at a great price point,” she remembers. “I always believed in myself and my vision. I knew that I could manage and operate a store, but it wasn’t easy to convince lenders that your idea would work, despite the fact that I had an extensive business plan laid out. I was turned down many times, but kept pushing forward and finally—persistence paid off.” Now, over seven years later, Jenny is the proprietor of two Northshore locations— Mandeville and Covington. “I am a fourth generation entrepreneur,” she notes. “Retail has been my passion since I was 16 and landed my first job with The Gap. I knew my ability and believed in myself, and since childhood, my parents have taught me discipline and an excellent work ethic. Within six weeks, I had my first store up and running.” During her nearly decade-long career with The Gap, where she worked her way up from a seasonal part-time stock associate to an Associate Store Manager, Jenny not only learned the ins and outs of the retail business, but also discovered that she excelled at retail on multiple levels. “There is nothing I loved more than connecting with people and helping them create just the look they desired. I loved to work with people one-on-one,” she says. “I loved to strategize and fashion merchandise.” Today, the same holds true in her boutiques.

“I help people find just the right gift, or that little something special for themselves.”

Sophisticated Woman | December 2012

“The reasons I love what I do now, are pretty much the same as why I loved what I did then—the people,” she notes. “I help people find just the right gift, or that little something special for themselves.” Jenny is proud to offer the handmade work of local jewelers as well as sterling silver, white bronze and pewter product lines. Among the many jewelry lines carried in her stores are Brighton and Chamilia. Mira Mia is also among the top 50 retailers in the country for the Waxing Poetic jewelry line. “We have tried to incorporate and maintain a selection suited to every budget and have a style variety from classic to high fashion,” Jenny says. “We really do have something for everyone, offering jewelry and gift items for as little as $10 and as much as $400.” With the rising value of precious metals, Jenny, like many in her industry, has seen a substantial increase in cost. “We, like the industry, have made adjustments in order to accommodate our broad customer base. Rather than exclude a percentage of customers who may be priced out of a certain market, we would rather expand our product line and introduce as many customers as is possible to the versatile metal alternatives out there.” Ear piercing, done by appointment and personally by Jenny, engraving, children’s jewelry, bridal jewelry and cake pulls are just a few of the amenities and extras customers have come to love. “We even offer a wish list service,” she says. “Just come in and choose your favorite

items, tell us your ring, bracelet and necklace sizes then tell your friends and family we have your wish list, or we can call them for you. All they have to do is come in and pick from items you’ve pre-selected. I think it is my mission to help men figure out what women actually want in a gift!” Jenny has built her business by providing her customers with quality products and the best experience possible when they shop at any of her locations. “I love the people here in this community. They are family-oriented, loyal customers who shop locally. They love their small boutiques. They know where they can go for the products and service they want.” She credits her team of loyal employees with upholding her work ethic and giving customers a positive, warm experience every time they walk through her doors. “I value my staff’s feedback and opinions, because they are on the front lines, if you will, of my business.” Jenny says her strengths lie in her ability to be simultaneously a leader, entrepreneur and manager. “I have high expectations, and thankfully, my team rises to these expectations.” Jenny admits she is happiest when surrounded by her family. “My fiancé and I enjoy simple things like rides in the jeep along the lakefront, gardening, traveling, weekly family dinners and game nights,” she says. In the midst of planning her upcoming spring wedding to Northshore businessman Wesley Lagasse, she remains fully involved in the day-to-day running of Mira Mia. “You have to have a passion for what you do. It takes discipline, sacrifice and very hard work to achieve something you believe in, but it is well worth it,” she says. Mira Mia is located at 69305 Hwy. 21, Suite 500 in Covington, 985-893-6556, and 4350 Hwy 22, Suite B in Mandeville, 985-624-2880. ’Tis the Season— Act Up WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED

NO MATTER HOW they are spoken: Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, Kawanza, Merry Christmas, Happy Christmas, (what I say)—I love hearing these peacemaker greetings. They are part of what I appreciate most about the holidays. People want acknowledgment. Typically, I see people in therapy because of “other” people whose behaviors have given cause for them to act in, or act out. Those who act in may arrive for sessions with their faces downcast, somewhat lethargic and dismayed. Clients who act out, pace the floor, clench their fists, and vocalize their displeasure at injustice. Typically, I ask clients to notice the exceptions to others’ maltreatment, or people acting up. Throughout the holidays, instances of people who act up abound. When someone acts up, as I see it, their actions are based in altruism. Examples that my clients report back from this “homework” assignment are as follows. Strangers smile and greet me like they really notice me. Someone stepped aside and let me go first, with my few items, in the grocery line. I got a greeting card from a friend who had tracked down my address. People at my work pooled their money to give so that those less fortunate could have gifts of their own choosing. People sang carols to my elderly parents. My boss called me into the office to point out that my work makes a difference for good. Clients giving these accounts look brighter. They have lightness in their voices. The homework assignment that follows is for them to find three or more ways to act up themselves. ’Tis the season.

ESTATE PLANNING

Noon | Today, Nov. 19 A Rose by any Other Name OUR FEMALE CLIENTS often ask us what effect having a different name has on legal documents. This can occur if a client has married, remarried, or divorced. It is common for someone to have purchased or inherited real estate under their maiden or married name yet now have a completely different name on all of their identification. We always try to draft legal documents to include a woman’s maiden name. This is a requirement under Louisiana law for acquisition of real estate. If you include a maiden name, you will always have that “bridge” to future married names. For example, Mary Sue Doe on a deed will be easy to identify with Mary Doe Jones after she marries; whereby “Mary S. Doe” who later becomes “Mary D. Jones” is much harder to track. Using “maiden” names is a very civilian law (Louisiana) tradition. Notice that married ladies from Louisiana will usually use their maiden name initial as their middle initial, but it is more common for women to use the initial from their “middle” name outside of Louisiana. So, what does a woman need to do to change to her name? Since 2004 and a change in our law, it couldn’t be easier. Here is the actual statute found at La. R.S. 9:292: Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, a woman, at her option, may use her maiden name, her present spouse’s name,

WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB

or a hyphenated combination thereof. If widowed, divorced, or remarried, a woman may use her maiden name, the surname of her deceased or former spouse, the surname of her present spouse, or any combination thereof. Proper documentation (such as a birth certificate, marriage license, or divorce decree) is sufficient to use the above-mentioned statute to go back to a former name. These documents can also be used as proof of identification when a different name appears in a legal document than the name presently being used. It is always a good idea to be sure your “official” identification (such as driver’s license and passport) shows the name you intend to use. Remember, you may also need to have certain certificates reissued as well, like a notarial commission, or professional designations, and especially health insurance cards. There is no need for an attorney or any kind of Court proceeding at all to accomplish this task.

Fatal Attraction of Tanning Beds (Part II)

Meet the Owners— Mandeville Party Co.

LAST YEAR AT this time I wrote an article about two twenty-one-year-old women who had recently been diagnosed with melanoma, the potentially deadly skin cancer which has become so prevalent in the last few decades. Recently a seventeen-year-old girl visited one of our nurse practitioners for facial acne, and fortunately her back was examined as well. Despite vociferous objections which were overruled by her mother, a dark mole on her back was biopsied and later determined to be malignant melanoma. It is important to note not only the tender years of these patients but also their gender. Why? Because tanning bed use is rampant among teenage girls and young women, and the radiation emitted by tanning beds is estimated to increase the chance of melanoma by four to five times. I tell my patients it’s the skin equivalent to chain smoking, not only for causing melanoma, but also for other common skin cancers as well as premature aging. It’s time for our appearance-conscience youth, and especially their parents, to recognize the undeniable danger of tanning beds and to also insist on regular spot checks for abnormal moles and melanoma. Any mole that changes in appearance and calls attention to itself by being extra dark, multicolored, unevenly bordered, or irritated needs the eye of a specialist cast upon it. Anyone with a history of blistering sunburns, a family history of melanoma, or simply a large number of moles is also at risk. The teenage patient who initially came to our office for acne will now hopefully enjoy a long and happy life because a specialist recognized a lethal threat quietly growing on her skin.

ON THE CUSP of their tenth year in business, Tina and Mike Gunaldo, owners of two locations of Mandeville Party Company, are ecstatic to be part of such a thriving community which so readily supports local businesses. “Over the last nine years that we have been in business, we have found our place in this community,” Tina says. “At the same time we are growing our business.” As a local business, Tina and Mike are heavily involved in the community and strive every day to offer customers exceptional services and products. “We now offer custom printing on team spirit cups here in-house,” Tina notes. “What was once a two week turnaround time, plus freight, is now done here, locally, in roughly five business days, with no freight costs whatsoever. Customers not only save time and money, but they can get a product they will love from a local retailer they know.” Though Mandeville Party Company is locally owned,

December 2012

Owners Mike and Tina Gunaldo with managers Jackie Levy and Paul Riley. this small business has begun to spread its wings as other retail stores, both state and nationwide, have sought them out to imprint their cups. With gifts and party items hand-selected from over five markets across the nation, from New York to Las Vegas, Tina and Mike go to great lengths to uncover hidden gems relevant to our area, but on-trend nationwide. “Our customers have come to expect the unexpected from us, and we would not have it any other way.” Mandeville Party Company is located in Northlake Shopping Center with a second location at 2200 North Causeway Approach, 985-674-1605, 985-674-0635, www.mandevillepartyco.com.

THE FACE OF Christ Episcopal School is poised for change, as the school prepares for expansion and breaks ground on the newest stateof-the art building on the Covington campus. Headmaster John Morvant, notes that the expansion, including the 24,835 square foot Center of Inquiry set for completion by summer 2013, will address present and future needs for the school. “This spring, we will graduate our first senior class, making our pre-k through twelfth grade vision a reality. With our growing student body’s needs and expectations, we are expanding our campus to ensure long-term success,” he notes. With an estimated cost of $4.5 million, the building is part of an integrated master plan which will ultimately include classrooms, a stateof-the-art theatre, digital library, conference rooms, and a lobby that will be a showcase for artwork by students. A new track and athletic field facility will allow the school to train athletes as well as host local and regional events. Seniors in the first graduating class wax nostalgically about the expansion. “Leaving the school with something to be remembered is the best thing the senior class could ask for. 5:00 pm | Today, Nov. 19 A Patient Story I’D LIKE TO share with you a patient story that I was privileged to be part of recently. Every patient has their own “story.” That’s what makes being a physical therapist so much fun, and so deeply rewarding. Here is the story of 48-year-old Dianna. I’ll let her tell it. “I had my knee cap removed in 1980. The doctor said that it was too damaged from arthritis to remain, and I’ve been doing pretty well without it. That is, up until late 2011 when I fell down some stairs. It really started to hurt and it also swelled a lot. Eventually I saw an orthopedic surgeon, who cleaned it out and then sent me to physical therapy (PT).

I’m still surprised and in awe by the results from PT. “I went to therapy with Matt faithfully at 6:30 am three times a week. My goal was to get back to running again. I really wanted to complete a 5k run with my daughter. My doctor wasn’t optimistic about that, but Matt thought it was possible. So we got to work. “I am so excited to be able to say that I was able to participate in the Ochsner Back to Football 5k which kicked off the Saints Season. I also just completed the Glow Run in New Orleans! I was always active, and I was determined to return to that lifestyle. Physical Therapy was wonderful! I never expected the outcome that we were able to achieve. I’m still surprised and in awe by the results from PT. The knowledge gained during physical therapy has also allowed me to continue working out on my own, and I feel great!”

І LEADERS Noon | Friday Nov 16 St. Tammany Parish Introduces a New Website

Dec 2012 WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT

ST. TAMMANY PARISH has a new website. We have improved and redesigned our website to make it easier for citizens to interact with Parish Government. This was undertaken to increase accessibility, transparency and accountability of parish government, and was designed with the user in mind. For most of St. Tammany’s residents, businesses and visitors, the primary interaction with parish government is through the web and smart phones. We want to continue to simplify the way in which people get information about starting a business, contacting elected officials, or area festivals. The general look of the site has changed, but the intention is still to give citizens access to their government and make it easier to do business for themselves and with the parish. I have said many

times that we want “Government that Works” and this website is a great example. Some of new features include the ability to refine the results of our search engine. We have also added Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on many pages and plan to add more in the future. In addition, we are gathering all the forms that citizens need from parish government and putting them in one place that can be accessed from the FAQs on the homepage or from “Forms” on the Parish Departments page. The redesign is a work in progress. You will continue to see changes through the next several months. If you cannot find what you need or have a suggestion, please write the webmaster@stpgov.org or send me an email at AskPat@stpgov.org.

Christmas Glow in Ponchatoula

WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON, PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

“YES, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.” Santa will arrive in Ponchatoula December 8, mounted on his sleigh in the annual Christmas parade. This year’s theme is, “Christmas Characters on Parade.” Floats, as well as bands, marching, dance and school groups all proceed down Main Street in their holiday garb, but this is just one of many holiday activities. With store windows decorated, white lights sparkling, and illuminated ornaments hanging from every light post, Ponchatoula is ablaze in the glow of Christmas. Each year the mayor hosts the Downtown

Christmas Lighting Ceremony where half the population visits and toasts the advent of the season. You missed it this year, but there is more to come! Friday Night Lights continues for two more weeks, enticing visitors from near and far to stroll the streets of Ponchatoula and shop locally at the diverse shops in their paths. The gifts purchased here will be personal, unique and chosen with that special person in mind. It’s the season to show your love, generosity and devotion, and to partake in the highest beauty and joy. Share time with family and friends in the glow of the season. Come to Ponchatoula and see that there really is a Santa Claus and the people acknowledge the joys and beauty of life.

Business Support is Top Priority

WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT

WITH TODAY’S ECONOMIC environment, growing competition, increasing Internet sales, marketing options, and on and on, there are overwhelming challenges for local small businesses. Our board recently analyzed member input gathered through surveys and focus groups to determine priorities for 2013. It was no surprise that small business support came out as number one. How we provide that support is something we constantly state through multiple means of communication, news articles, Facebook, new website and weekly e-mails. Actively engaged members gain the most value from the Chamber. However, our web and printed information, as well as one on one counseling offered by our partners with Southeastern University’s S.B.D.C. and S.C.O.R.E., and input on public policy and governmental affairs,

impact not just every member but every local business. So, building partnerships and coalitions with other organizations and governmental bodies, and our work to be a strong voice of business, remain as priorities as well. The questions of why join the chamber, and why some remain members for 10, 20, or more years was analyzed. Those nearly 400 of our 1,100 long-term members are the “investors” who, together with those who have served as board leaders, have enabled our Chamber to grow to its current highest accredited status. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
