WE ARE SO EXCITED to launch our New Look. We hope our readers and advertisers like it as much as we do! I would thank the many people who were involved in its creation, especially Joanne Gallinghouse, our Publisher, for giving us her blessing to give the magazine a makeover. We could not have done it without the talents of our Art Director Cheryl Sohn, who so enthusiastically took this project on and created our new color scheme and logos. In this issue we say goodbye to our beloved editor Amy Bouton who has been our editor for two and a half years, we wish her the best of luck in her new position and look forward to reading her blog on our website sophisticatedwoman.com. It is that time of year when we ask you to vote for the Enterprising Woman of the Year. Voting ends on February 28 and the ballot can be found on page 30. The winner will be announced at our annual Hats Off luncheon on Friday, April 5. Our Northshore’s Best voting also starts this month and you can vote for all your favorites at sophisticatedwoman.com. Personally, my life is about to change as my son turns thirteen at the end of the month. I am not sure I am ready to live with a teenager but I am definitely up for the challenge. Happy Birthday Colin! Finally, I would like to thank all the Sophisticated Woman magazine staff, our readers and our loyal advertisers for your support, and wish you a wonderful and prosperous New Year.

WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
NEW YEAR’S DAY is every man’s birthday. ~Charles Lamb Most of us want happiness. My years of working with people and businesses have taught me the rule of happiness which is assuming personal responsibility. Letting others carry what is your own responsibility is a joy cheater. Having immediate amusement only robs from the ultimate experience. I bought a new car—red in color—hard to miss. My ninth grade Sunday school class thought my car was “the bomb.” I thought so too. They also thought that as a sign of generosity and goodwill that I might hand the keys over to them. These youths responded with the ability given their years. I considered letting them go for a ride. Letting them test the car out. I held the keys and looked at these underage drivers and thought, “I have the responsibility of this car—a pleasure yes, and a duty too.” So, I held the keys, took them for a spin and said, “In time, if you want a car like this one, you can do just that. Now, is too soon, too much responsibility for you to shoulder.” That car was also a lemon. I carried that purchase to its reasonable conclusion. I paid for it and never bought another like it. A way to happiness is to establish and define 2013 as not a he-said, or a she-said year, but an I-say year.

Our January Charter HERO Abigal Gardener
For Mandeville High School/ New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) senior Abigail Gardener, every day brings her closer to her dreams of earning her BSA in Musical Theater, traveling the country in musicals, and the ultimate goal of performing on Broadway. “Eventually, I would like to come back to the New Orleans area, and either open my own community theater or work closely with an existing one,” she says. “This is where I got my start and there are so many vibrant theaters here.” Abigail has maintained a 4.5 GPA, and she recently created clay bones for the nationwide collaborative art installation, One Million Bones Project, a remembrance of the victims and survivors of genocide worldwide. The installation will be on display at the National Mall in the spring of 2013. Perhaps the cause nearest to her heart, however, is the annual Turkey Trot Lung Cancer Run she devotes her time to every year, in honor of her great Uncle and Godfather, a non-smoker, who died of the disease in 2004 . “I would like to be one of those people who inspires someone to follow their dreams.” Congratulations to Abigail, our January Charter HERO Award winner.

of leaving the cocoon of familiarity I have grown to love, and excited to start out on a new venture. I have so enjoyed my time here at Sophisticated Woman. The best part of this job is meeting people from all walks of life, who make up this wonderful community we all call home. Close seconds are the ability to speak to such a large number of people on subjects that are close to my heart, and the people I work with who are creative, funny, supportive, and in so many ways like family. They are encouraging and caring and I will miss them all. In this issue, our Enterprising Woman, an education expert, gives us hope for starting the New Year off on a new path. Our special section on Health and Fitness Facilities offers endless possibilities for personal wellness. And we get a rare glimpse into the world of our Fashion Editor and professional Wardrobe Stylist, Patty Beal. As hard as it is to say goodbye to my familiar comfort zone, I know that I leave having made life-long friends and having learned so much that will contribute to my newest venture. Special thanks to Joanne Gallinghouse for entrusting me with the job of Editor. Thanks also to Sophisticated Woman’s loyal readers. It has been a pleasure to come into your homes every month. Here is hoping your New Year is prosperous and full of many blessings.

Health & Fitness Facilities “My trainers are all former clients, so we all come from the same place,” she notes. “Each one is certified in several areas, we have all had weight struggles and ultimately came back to optimum fitness. We get it. We do not judge.”
The Place for Transformations— Ingrid Rinck, FITCAMP Training Studios WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTO BY CLAIRE THOMAS
AT FITCAMP TRAINING STUDIOS, voted Northshore’s Best Fitness Studio 2011, you will notice little extraneous equipment, but you will notice little sources of inspiration like the quote written on the mirror, “What you eat in private will show in public.” Master Trainer and FITCAMP owner, Ingrid Rinck, says everyone who chooses FITCAMP, does so to solve their fitness quandary. “All of our clients are here because somewhere along the way, they lost track of their fitness goals. They are fit individuals, but for whatever reason, their lives took over and fitness lost out. Sometimes, when you put your family and work first, you put yourself last,” Ingrid says.
Sophisticated Woman | January 2013
Ingrid, voted Northshore’s Best Personal Trainer 2011, built her 13-year training resumé in fitness facilities where she garnered a loyal following. She decided to strike out on her own because she wanted her clients to have more personal attention, less inhibition, and freedom of choice, without contracts that would force them into a situation where they felt trapped. “I know every one of my clients,” she says. “I know their family situation, their goals and their reasons for being here. People have real lives, where real things come up, and when they do, I want to know about it and help them figure out a way to get back on track.” Ingrid stresses that people are free to come and go in a way that works for them. “We have no rigid contracts. Everyone who is here is here because they want to be here.” Fitness at FITCAMP comes in many different packages. With various training options like six-week fit camps, personal training (private and semi-private), kickboxing, bootcamps and FITCAMPmeals, Ingrid and her staff work with each client to customize a plan that fits their training goals as well as their schedules. “My trainers are all former clients, so we all come from the same place,” she notes. “Each one is certified in several areas, we have all had weight struggles and ultimately came back to optimum fitness. We get it. We do not judge. In fact, when a new student walks in, class members take them in and welcome them. We all want the best for one another, and this is where we make exercise fun.” “We also meet people where they are,” she says. “Some people have not worked out in quite a while, but when they joined other facilities, they felt pressure to perform at a higher level than their present capability. We are all about modification, and progressing you into each level of fitness.” Ingrid says that every person will see results. “When clients realize that their hard work yields such amazing results, they undergo a complete transformation, and they cannot help but hold their heads higher and feel better about themselves. That is our ultimate goal.” FITCAMP Training Studios is located at 105 Campbell Avenue, Ste. 3, Mandeville. Call 985-898-3400 or 985-290-9757 (Ingrid’s cell) for more information, or visit them on facebook at www.facebook.com/fitcampbodies.

An Opened Door With A Purpose— The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana Photo by Tom Ballantine
After
TANYA JONES HAD battled weight problems all of her life. Following the birth of her three babies and the aftermath of Katrina, things got out of control. “I tried everything with no success. I looked into weight loss surgery and our insurance wouldn’t cover it. I was devastated. I didn’t feel like doing anything or going anywhere.” Then several months later her husband came home with the news that his company’s insurance was changing. She immediately called The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana. After six months on a medically supervised weight loss program Dr. Jimmy Redmann performed a laparoscopic gastric bypass. “I prayed about it and God opened a door. I thought, ‘This is going to take forever.’ But the doors opened and everything worked out!” Immediately following the surgery the weight started falling off. Tanya admits that it wasn’t easy but it was worth it. Eighteen months later Tanya has lost 113 pounds and feels incredible. “If I hadn’t had this surgery, my health would have been horrible. And I’m too young for that. I’ve got three children to raise! I’ve had such wonderful results, I’m so happy I did it!”
Dr. Redmann agrees. “Tanya had not done anything wrong, and she was on a path to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and heart problems. None of this was her fault.” He explained that dieting alone would not solve the problem and keep the weight off. “Tanya has been successful because of her hard work. After surgery she’s focused on good nutrition and continued follow up. I’m blessed to be able to perform this type of surgery on those who need it. It not only changes lives, in many cases, weight loss surgery saves lives.” But Tanya feels as if she’s the one who’s most blessed. “God had this purpose for me. My prayers were answered. He opened a door to allow me to have surgery and let me do so much more with my life. I know this was His will.” In addition to the laparoscopic gastric bypass, Dr. Redmann also performs the sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric banding, duodenal switch and the new incisionless procedure, POSE. The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana offer free weekly weight loss surgery seminars in various locations. Call 1-877-691-3001 or visit www.whyweight.com or www.poseinfo.com for more information.

Belotero®—a New and Unique Filler
5:00 pm | Wednesday, Dec. 12
A UNIQUE, NEW dermal filler has just been launched in the US with a unique name: Belotero®. Named after “La Belle Otero” (Carolina Otero, 1868-1965), a famous European actress and dancer known for her beauty, Belotero’s own claim to fame is its ability to subtly diffuse into the uppermost layers of the skin without leaving ridges or a bluish discoloration (called the Tyndall effect) which has limited the use of other fillers in some areas, especially the tear trough. This breakthrough is due to the product’s gel matrix which allows it to fill superficial wrinkle lines without disturbing the structure of the skin. A good analogy is a dry sponge absorbing water and swelling without changing its basic structure. Hyaluronidase, the specific filler in Belotero®, is a molecule which absorbs and holds water like a sponge for months on end, stretching out the collapsed wrinkle. Because Belotero® is able to diffuse ever so gently throughout the skin’s second layer (which contains the damaged or diminished collagen and elastic tissue), it can be injected inconspicuously higher than any other filler. This means that especially fine lines, such as lipstick and smoker’s lines on the lips, tiny criss-cross lines on the cheeks and chin, and sunken tear troughs under the eyes, are more precisely treatable. With the introduction of Belotero®, those shallow and aggravating lines often found on otherwise fine and wrinkle-free skin can be efficiently erased for an average of nine months. In conjunction with deeper fillers such as Sculptra®, we now can accom-

Shed the Winter Pounds WE ALL WANT to be healthy, and if you’re reading this article, chances are you may be interested in losing a little weight. While you could fill a library with books about how to lose weight, the following is what works for my patients. The first phase is exercise. For women who have gone for more than a month without exercising, I always recommend walking to start. The first day isn’t the hardest part. The hardest part is making the commitment to do it consistently. Commit to 30 straight days of exercise. Whether it is walking with your kids as they ride bicycles or crushing an intense spin class, do not miss a day. This jump start ensures that you create an exercise habit that is hard to break. The second phase involves adjusting your diet. The human body is like an engine. There is input and output. And if there is a mismatch, you’ll accumulate fuel in the form of fat. I recommend two important diet modifications. The first is to dine out less. We often consume more than an entire day’s calories in a single restaurant meal. The second is portion control. Be aware of how many calories are in the food you eat.
1116 West 21 Avenue
exercise. The final phase is maintenance. Do your best to limit indiscretions. It is easy to let daily stresses serve as excuses to not eat right or exercise. Exercise and a healthy diet make your days better and reduce stress. These steps are the keys to achieving the goal of not only losing weight but also becoming the healthiest, most energetic version of you possible.

The cancer genetic counseling and testing process can be quite complex. It is not simply a positive or negative test result and there are many different tests that can be ordered. “If your personal family history meets any of the listed risk factors, consider seeing a certified cancer genetic counselor for a personalized risk assessment and a discussion of the risks and benefits of appropriate testing options,” says Matthew McElveen, M.D., medical oncologist and SMHRCC Medical Director. While most cases Dr. Superneau sees relate to cancer, any patient with a non-cancer genetic disorder, including pediatric or obstetric patients, can also be seen in the clinic. Exciting breakthroughs in genetics are already happening and they will only increase in the coming years because we better understand the human genome,” Dr. Superneau says. “Medical genetics in general and cancer genetics specifically, have already led to the development of new treatments
ever developing cancer, genetics risk assessments can have a huge impact on a person’s life,” Dr. Superneau says. Some of the issues that indicate a person and their family could benefit from genetics counseling include: a personal or family history of early-onset cancer; multiple family members on the same

Patients can either self refer to the clinic, based on their family history or diagnosis, or they can be referred by their physician. To get an appointment, call SMH Centralized Scheduling at 985-649-8585.

ONE OF THE MOST universal questions cancer patients have is, “Why did this happen to me?” Frequently, the concern is about whether there is a chance it will happen to other members of their families. What if it’s in their genes? “It is important to know your family history and the patterns of disease found there,” says Clinical Geneticist Duane W. Superneau, M.D., with the Slidell Memorial Hospital Regional Cancer Center (SMHRCC) Genetics Clinic. “Because of media stories, those who have breast and colon cancer are most concerned about the genetics aspect. But truly, this affects everyone. Know your family history so you know your risks.” As a geneticist, Dr. Superneau is on the new frontier in the fight against cancer. He leads a program at the SMHRCC that offers genetics counseling and testing to people at increased risk for hereditary cancer, and helps them make informed medical decisions based on their own personal risk assessment. The clinic helps patients establish a diagnosis, to further explore an established diagnosis, or to assess risks when there is a family history of a genetic issue. “By allowing them to better manage their health and reduce their risk of

I HOPE YOU are staying well this flu season. The health of your immune system plays a major role in protecting you against bacteria and viruses, inflammation and disease. Studies show eating foods rich in antioxidants, getting exercise, reducing stress and getting enough sleep are some simple ways you can insure your immune system is strong. Today’s research also supports the historic beliefs that high quality, loose-leaf, white teas can help boost your immune system. In particular, white tea has been shown to have antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal potential. Sources say it can aid in building up the immune system, as well as decreasing inflammation and sometimes even allergic response. It is the least processed tea, so it retains more antioxidants than other teas, and provides a fresh leafy taste. As such, white tea is also excellent in cancer prevention, artery function and bone strengthening (all topics for another column). Research suggests that people who drink three to four cups of white tea per day are remarkably 50 percent less likely to die after a heart attack. In addition to its health benefits, loose-leaf white teas contain little caffeine, cost only a few cents per cup, and come in a variety of exotic flavors like: Pomegranate Madagascar Vanilla, Wedding Blend, Blueberry White and Pai Mu Tan to name a few. So start your New Year White and ditch those high calorie sugary drinks and high cost caffeinated coffees, and start building a healthy immune system. I recommend loose-leaf teas for one reason—the difference is in the quality of the tea you drink, and the flavor and nutrition in my cup of tea matters to me.

Invest in Your Child’s Future— Ann Habisreitinger Barré, M. Ed., Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution
Sophisticated Woman | January 2013
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
18
PASSIONATE, FEARLESS AND never one to shy away from a challenge, Ann Habisreitinger Barré, M. Ed., Director of Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution has enjoyed many adventures in her life simply because she seized the moment. She started college on a softball scholarship. At the end of her sophomore year, a few cheerleaders noticed her tumbling skills while she was helping a friend learn a beam routine for her gymnastics class. Virtually right then and there, her college cheering career began. Similarly, she accompanied a friend to the New Orleans Saints cheerleader tryouts, who had a co-ed squad at the time, and someone talked her into trying out. As the last candidate, Ann took the leap, made the squad, and went on to cheer for the Saints for the next six years. In the professional working world, Ann was an educator and counselor in a formal school system, when she began to tutor parttime. As she became more engrained in tutoring, she was eventually asked to become the director of Huntington in Metairie. She opened the Northshore location three years later in 2009. Though it meant leaving the security of her familiar teaching career, once again she decided to take the challenge. “What we can do here at Huntington that cannot be done in a classroom setting, is take a
child one-on-one, find their problem or specific need, and address it.” Watching the transformation brings her professional satisfaction. “What I love the most is when I see the light bulb go off in a child’s mind,” she notes. “When a child is struggling academically, the entire family dynamic is affected. Once the struggles end, it is an immediate improvement for the entire family.” Pinpointing whether or not a child needs outside tutoring help can be a challenge. “I have never tested a lazy child,” Ann notes. “Many children simply lack study skills, or a foundational skill which can impact many areas. We perform a thorough evaluation of their child to determine what they need, and in what exact area they need it.” She also suggests that parents pay close attention to cumulative grades such as those on standardized tests and final exams. “Cs on larger

tests could indicate that the child may be getting only half of critical reading, math or science skills that will build from year to year.” From comprehension to study skills, to math, phonics, English and writing, the staff of certified teachers at Huntington work with students from pre-K through twelfth grade, individually, where they specifically need help. Some students sail along academically at first and then encounter problems as they advance through the grades and meet different teachers. Ann indicates that there may be certain foundational skill sets they might be lacking. “A child with skills in place should have the ability to adapt to any teacher, no matter their teaching style.” For Dr. Ashley Geoghegan, the transformation in her daughter Aidan led to academic success. “Within three months, Aidan had a completely different attitude about school! They empowered her with the knowledge and skills to be very successful in second grade. I am truly grateful,” she notes. Aidan gained a newfound love of learning. “I like Huntington because I feel smarter and my work is easier. When my friends ask me a question about school work, I can explain it to them. And now I really love reading,” she says. In addition, high school students attend Huntington for individual ACT and SAT test preparation. “One of the biggest benefits of this individual prep is that students tend to ask questions they may not
otherwise ask in front of a large group,” Ann says. “We have students who have increased their ACT scores by as much as 10 points after tutoring.” Students, like Hunter Ward, realize the benefits as well. “Huntington helped me immensely with my ACT. I improved from a 26 to 31 and scored a perfect 36 on my reading section. I am extremely grateful for everything Huntington did for me, and I would recommend their ACT prep to any student.” Ann stresses to parents that academics can count toward college admission as early as junior high. “Many honor courses in junior high, such as algebra, can be counted on high school transcripts,” she says. She encourages parents to start early when looking into scholarship money, and for students, she stresses the importance of uncovering the multitude of scholarship sources available. Students should do everything they can to develop a high grade point average. Ann will tell you that her passions are her family and education. “My husband and I have known each other since kindergarten,” she says. However, they did not actually start dating until after their tenyear high school reunion. “Then we fell in love and got married,” she notes. She says that her three children, all different, are the focus of her life, and keep her and Emile very busy as they participate in many sports and clubs. She tries to instill in them to always do their best, put God first, and listen to their inner voices. “Luckily what I do professionally has been beneficial to my family as well. Education today is critical and so competitive. My goal for my children, as well as all of my students is to help them obtain the best education possible. It is an investment in your child’s future.” Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution is located at 1748A North Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. A Cerius Surprise
WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK
Jan 2013
a fine mixture of quality potting soil, and some sand. As the seeds dried out, I dropped them into the little soil-filled pots and began watching for signs of regeneration. In a few weeks time, with the help of sunshine and consistent watering, a stem with two tiny leaves that resembled the parent plant emerged. I felt quite good, as I had never heard of anyone (including myself) successfully growing a night-blooming Cerius plant from seeds! Unfortunately, this first attempt was soon to be thwarted by an unwelcome red and black grasshopper who, after apparently squeezing his way through a crack in the greenhouse door, hopped up on the counter and was happily munching on my baby plants. Nothing was left of my dream to grow night-blooming Cerius plants from seeds except another, unnoticed seed pod which I let remain on the plant until it split open on its own. Two weeks passed as the seeds dried out. I have planted these with a wary eye as my daily visits now include a search for any signs of the hopping villain who ate my babies and ruined my dreams. May you each have success in your gardening endeavors and may the blessing of good gardening dreams come true.

WE CAN’T CONTROL the weather as it seems to be creating problems all across America, as well as in the rest of our natural world, with fires, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes. Take heart and a walk around yours or a friend’s garden where you can control some of the favorable conditions. Mulch well with pine needles, leaves, or hay. Prepare proper coverings for protection of your favorite, tender vegetation. Water—especially our beautiful Southern oaks—when Mother Nature forgets. Enjoy what remains of fall colors. Personally, I have had a curious experience that may be of interest. Last Spring I discovered an unusual growth on my night-blooming Cerius (which has produced a couple of new blooms almost every week during this past summer and up until September). At first I thought it was another bloom, just pink instead of the customary green, which would eventually flower. To my surprise it turned out to be a seed pod. I observed the pod on a daily basis. After a few weeks, I removed it from the plant, split it open, and laid it on a counter in the greenhouse to allow the tiny black seeds inside to “dry out” from the nourishing gel that filled the interior. As I waited for the seeds to mature, I cleaned and prepared 12 little pots with gravel in the bottom (for good drainage),

І PATTY BEAL, CLOSETOPIA
Line, Design, Proportion
Sophisticated Woman | January 2013
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

WHAT IS A WARDROBE STYLIST and who really needs one? Patty Beal, owner of Closetopia, definitely fits the bill. “There is a science behind fashion. Your wardrobe needs to work for you, and it can, if you understand the science behind dressing properly and proportionately.” Patty jokes that her first client was Barbie ™. “Because my twin sister never did appreciate fashion the way I did, as a child, when our parents would take us to the dime store to buy an outfit for our Barbie™ dolls, I would get to buy both of ours. To stretch our dollar, I would make sure both outfits were interchangeable. I also shopped for our school
wardrobes in the exact same way.” Closetopia is the marriage of Patty’s love of all things fashion and her extensive education, knowledge and expertise of wardrobe building. “I studied fashion in college and I worked for a designer directly out of school. When I opened stores for him, our specialty was building women’s wardrobes based on the science of proportion and fit. Decades later, I am still doing the same thing, it is just customized based on what each client already owns.” Patty starts with wardrobe assessment. “We get rid of anything that is ill-fitting,
is a bad cut, or just does not work. Line, design and proportion are key. People tend to develop an attachment to their clothing, based on its perceived value. If you do not wear it, it has no value to you,” she says. For client Joanne Gallinghouse, this was a lesson Patty helped her learn. “She really helped me let go of some things that I had been hanging onto, hoping they would work,” she noted. The next step is organization to get a feel for what is left. All discarded clothing is either donated to women in need through Patty’s Angelhood Clothing Ministry, or consigned so that the client retains some of the value.
Patty’s Fashion Tips • When shopping, try to get there when the store opens. The store is organized and the store consultants are fresh. • Become a purposeful shopper. Shop with a list and be patient and purposeful. • Statistics show that roughly only 10% of women can fit into something off the rack. Think about tailoring to get the proper fit. It is worth it because when clothes fit properly and proportionately, they accent your best assets.
Lastly, she creates several different outfits and documents them in photographs for her clients to use as a reference every day. “Patty put together things that I would have never thought to put together. She came in with a fresh pair of eyes and helped me look at my clothes less rigidly.” “What I really love is when we finally define a client’s style. It’s like My Fair Lady,” she says. “The best part of this process is that every step is optional. Each client keeps her style, but uses my science.” To contact Patty call 985-502-6673, or find her on Facebook at Closetopia.
“For a long time I bought items one at a time and could never put them together. They were great pieces but I did not know what to do with them. Though I thought about a hiring a wardrobe stylist, I could never find a local one. When a friend referred me to Patty, I immediately called her. It has been such fun! She has taken things that I kept, but did not know what to do with and repurposed them into things I can wear. I’m her biggest fan! Now, getting dressed is a pleasure. I know which outfit I will wear. She has even accessorized for me. And I feel confident that I can implement what I have learned from her.”
—Donna Taylor
Sophisticated Woman | January 2013
“I ended up with three piles,” Joanne says. “She did consign some for me, which was a fabulous service, because it was something I had always wanted to do, but never did.” Next, she and the client discern where the holes in the wardrobe lie, and make a list of what she needs to complete and complement that wardrobe. “She made a list for me of items I needed to flesh out my wardrobe,” Joanne recalled. “This was not an ‘essentials list’ for every woman, it was specific to my wardrobe needs and it increased my use of basics tremendously.” If necessary, Patty will shop with her client to fill in the holes.

BOOK REVIEW
Destiny of the Republic WRITTEN BY MIMI NOTHACKER
DESTINY OF THE REPUBLIC: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard, is an inspiring and heartbreaking story of James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, and his deranged assassin, Charles Guiteau. Garfield and Guiteau both began life with humble beginnings, but while Garfield worked hard, excelling in his endeavors, Guiteau, indolent and delusional, was a chronic failure. It is ironic that a leader who offered much to the improvement of his world could be destroyed by a person possessing so few redeemable traits. The book is set in Washington D.C. during the 1880’s, a period of fascinating innovations and inventions. It was also a period of scientific rivalry, often driven by egos and politics. Soon after Guiteau shot Garfield in a D.C. train station, telegraph offices kept the country apprised of the president’s condition with medical bulletins and news releases. Alexander Graham Bell was called upon to find the bullet lodged in Garfield’s back, using an early prototype of a metal detector. The nation, still in turmoil after the Civil War, became solidified in grief behind the Republican president, a popular politician who supported civil rights while uniting the country. Throughout Garfield’s arduous and horrific ordeal, he remained a gentleman: stoic, patient and courteous. Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard is available as a book or downloadable audio and CD at St. Tammany Parish Library or area bookstores.

5pm | Wed., Dec. 12 Annual Gift Tax Exclusion WE ARE OFTEN ASKED “How much can I give my children each year?” Usually what folks are referring to is the “Annual Gift Tax Exclusion Amount” (AGTE). This amount for 2013 is $14,000 per person. Technically, this means that if you are wealthy enough, you can gift $14,000 to every person you know! Contrary to popular belief, there is no need that the person be related to you. Also this $14,000 AGTE applies to both husband and wife, so a married couple can actually gift $28,000 to each person per year. If you gift to someone more than the $14,000 AGTE, then you will need to file a federal gift tax return (a Form 709). However, it is very likely there will be no gift tax due as the amount we are allowed to gift in 2013, without having to pay any gift tax, is $1 million. (This figure assumes the law did not change after the writing of this article.) There are some gifts that are exempt from any gift tax requirement; in other words, the value of the gift may be unlimited. These include: gifts to spouses (if they are U.S. citizens, if not a citizen, the gift is limited to only $143,000), gifts to charities, gifts covering someone’s medical expenses as long as it is payable directly to the provider, and gifts covering tuition as long as that is paid directly to the educational institution.
January 2013
WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB
There are some gifts that are exempt from any gift tax requirement; in other words, the value of the gift may be unlimited. The AGTE is a “calendar year” gift which means you may gift $14,000 on December 31, 2013, then again the next day, on January 1, 2014. However, the gift must be completed in the calendar year. For example, if you write your child an AGTE check for $14,000 on December 31, 2013, it must be cashed before the end of the year. Lastly, you may not take a deduction on your income taxes for making an annual gift. The benefit is that neither the donor, nor the donee, is required to report the transaction on their tax returns. Your proof of the gift is as simple as your canceled check with the memo note of “annual gift.”

Looking at it Both Ways
Sophisticated Woman | January 2013
WRITTEN BY PAUL CIMINO

THE MONTH OF January is named for the Roman god, Janus. A double faced god, Janus could look backward and forward simultaneously. With the arrival of January, we too, can look forward to a whole new year, the beginning of another decade. We can reflect on the past, wondering particularly—where did it go to so fast? But, having arrived here, we have survived the Olympic times of eating known as the “holidays.” For many of us it has been a marathon of foods of all types and origins as it was with our ancestors. To many of these holiday celebrations were attached legends and traditions to certain foods, which could bring prosperity or good fortune or bad luck. Possibly the most popular tradition which has endured for decades is the eating of cabbage during the month of January, beginning with New Year’s day. This is a particularly popular tradition here in our own region, where cabbage and black-eyed peas reign supreme for bringing good luck and monetary gain. In keeping with this tradition, included below is a recipe for an old favorite with a
new twist; cabbage. Simple to prepare and simply delicious, this is a dish you’ll want to add to your list of favorites. But don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself. Ciao. Buon appetito and Buon Anno.
Chicken and Cabbage Delight 1 three pound fryer chicken, cut up 2 thinly sliced medium onions 2 cloves minced garlic 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup white wine 3 tablespoons wine vinegar 6 cups shredded cabbage Salt and pepper In sauté pan, cook chicken, onions and garlic in hot olive oil over medium heat for about 20 minutes, or until chicken is brown, turning occasionally. Drain off fat. Combine wine, vinegar, and 1/2 teaspoon each, salt and pepper. Pour over chicken, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add shredded cabbage. Simmer covered for about 15 to 20 minutes longer or until chicken and cabbage is tender. With a side of couscous and a salad, this makes for a great meal.
Simple to prepare and simply delicious, this is a dish you’ll want to add to your list of favorites.

The Next Chapter of Southeast Louisiana Hospital
WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
AFTER FIVE MONTHS of hard work and negotiations, we are incredibly pleased that we are moving forward with a solution for Southeast Louisiana Hospital (SELH). The signed Cooperative Endeavor Agreements between the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, St. Tammany Parish and Meridian Behavioral Health Services, will allow the continuation of psychiatric care that St. Tammany and the Northshore desperately need. This innovative solution is a great thing for St. Tammany Parish, but in the end, the patients and families of those that desperately need those services will benefit the most. These citizens, our neighbors, cannot live a productive life without this type of behavioral health care. The agreement between the signatories gives the Parish control of the SELH property while the State
retains ownership. With this agreement, we will be able to recruit other organizations to have a presence on campus. We are already in discussions with groups that would add value to the services patients receive, and would like to relocate or create new organizations on campus. This agreement continues to provide necessary services to this Parish and the Northshore. We have worked through this unavoidable, although potentially devastating, closure and can now move forward to assure mental health care is available near the level we have had in St. Tammany for decades. It also keeps scores of jobs in this community, but that is in pale comparison to the services that those employees provide on a daily basis. Life saving and life changing care right here in St. Tammany Parish.

Inspired by Servant Leadership
34
WRITTEN BY KIERAN WELDON WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THROUGHOUT 2012, I fully embraced the opportunity to serve as Chamber chairman. I did not take this role lightly. When I joined my firm in 1997, our founders who had both previously served as chairmen, challenged me to get involved to both better our firm and give back, but mostly to better my own personal growth. Their stewardship and insight led me to my role in continuing their leadership legacy. Now that my term has ended, I am grateful for the collective impact of our board’s actions as we upheld the foundation of excellence for our members and future leaders. We recall the Greatest Generation. I want my generation to be the Grateful Generation. Grateful for our
business community, ethical, abundant and exemplary community servant leadership, the ability to—through one action or dollar at a time—make our community the finest place to live and work for our children and grandchildren. In the year ahead, I will stand behind our incoming chairman Amy Edwards of Capital One. In future years, I look forward to passing on the torch to other members of our architectural firm. I can now attest to the personal and professional rewards of chamber involvement, opening the door to leadership. For this I am grateful. I encourage other business owners to consider the opportunity to step up, to serve and to lead.

what are dental implants? Dental implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They bond with healthy bone and provide permanent support for dental crowns and dentures. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime.
why replace missing teeth? Losing one or more of your teeth creates a gap in your smile, affects your ability to chew properly, and can alter your diet and nutrition. In addition to these serious issues, tooth loss also causes bone loss.
tooth loss causes bone loss When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it shrinks from lack of stimulation. Not only does losing teeth affect your smile, it also changes the shape of your face causing you to look prematurely aged.
Q What will happen without treatment?
Q. How soon can I return to work after treatment? A. You may return to work the next day unless otherwise instructed by your clinician. You may be prescribed medication to alleviate any minor discomfort you may have.
Q Who is a candidate? A Dental implants can be placed in most adults. Adolescents may be eligible once their face structure has matured. Please ask your dental implant specialist to explain the benefits and risks to see if dental implants are right for you.
Q How long does it take to place dental implants? A. They may be placed in as little as 30 to 60 minutes depending on the location and the number of implants placed.
A Your jawbone begins to shrink from lack of stimulation. Losing your teeth will affect your smile and change the shape of your face, causing you to look prematurely aged.

Q Is implant placement painful? A No, dental implants are typically placed under local anesthesia. Most treatments can be completed in your clinician’s office.
Q What if there is not enough bone or gum tissue for the dental implant? A A graft may be needed if your clinician determines there is not sufficient bone or gum tissue.
