OCTOBER ALREADY. The rapid passage of time always astounds me. When we highlight Breast Cancer Awareness each year, inevitably we hear stories of spirit, strength, survival and yes—sadness—because not every cancer story has a happy ending.

But the point of this month focused on awareness, is precisely to create more happy endings. Early detection, medical advancements and the abundance of knowledge we continue to gain, are all part of a combined effort to ultimately make Breast Cancer a distant memory. We are not there yet, so in the meantime, let’s do what we do best. Let’s make those we know and love who are facing this disease (or any form of cancer), aware that we are here, and if we could we would make it disappear. Let’s rally behind those who need others right now and join a cause, fix a meal, clean a friend’s house, do their shopping, or participate in an event just to make someone else’s life better even if it is only momentarily. This month, learn about the first annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day which gives women insight into reconstruction choices after a mastectomy or lumpectomy, and meet our Enterprising Women who have embraced the Northshore. As always, we thank our advertisers who will participate in Shop-To-Stop Breast Cancer. To every person facing cancer, we wish you restored health. Please remember to do regular breast selfexams, get annual screening mammograms, and most of all, be there for someone if the need arises. Finally, to all of our neighbors affected by Hurricane Isaac you are in our thoughts as you continue to rebuild.

I LOVE HOW Goldilocks in the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears seems so satisfied when at last, she discovers the right porridge and she says, “Just right.” Not too hot, not too cold. That’s how October is for us in Louisiana, just right. For some things, not too much, not too little, is perfect—average. We trophy, medal and ribbon excellence but often overlook the middle place. In statistics, the bell curve or normal distribution, places most events in the commonplace. An average day in an industrialized country might look like this: Jane Doe or Demetrius Doe turn over in bed, wake up, turn on the light, walk across a secure floor with roof overhead, turn on the stove, make breakfast, have coffee, shower, decide what clothes to wear, listen to broadcast of her or his choice, decide what time is best to leave the house, and go where they want to go. In non-industrialized or war-torn countries, people think our average days are premium, spectacular events. So many of the world’s people long to be in the United States. People have climbed mountains, swam rivers and lost everything to become American. Waking up an American is no ordinary event. Ancestrally, all Americans were once part of the huddled masses longing to be free. Voting is an act of freedom to decide. Not voting too, is commonplace. I recall as a child walking to the voting booth with my mother (she never learned to drive). I watched her do something of importance. She explained that I would get to vote later on when I was of age to do so. I waited the years, and then got to vote. I hope you too will exercise this ordinary act of great significance. It’s just right.

IF ANYONE HAS had the unfortunate mishap of having a tooth (other than a wisdom tooth) removed, they soon realize the defect that is left behind. When teeth are removed, about half of the bone in the area is lost within the first year. Consider losing multiple teeth—facial asymmetry is certain. Today there are multiple options for tooth replacement. The success of the restorations is dependent upon the surrounding support structures staying true to their original form. Today we can control this by grafting the site at the time of tooth removal. Understanding your options is key to guaranteeing success. The treatment of choice in most instances to replace a single tooth to multiple teeth is a dental implant. Many times the implant can be placed in the same site as the tooth that was removed. Bone is then grafted around the site to reinforce the implant. After three months a crown can be placed on top. If a bridge is chosen to restore the missing tooth, preserving the gums and bone can allow the

Occasionally there may be a need to delay restoring the missing tooth. The bone graft will help to keep the bone support intact for a period of time to accept a restoration in the future. Newer techniques allow dentists to replace gum and bone support that may have deteriorated over time. They are more costly and less predictable. The best plan is to be proactive and prevent the loss at the time of extraction. This is soon going to become the new standard of care. Call Dr. Charles A. BETTER AND STRONGER, with as many options as are possible, is the goal for every cardiac patient in Dr. Aduli’s care. “The Physicians at St. Tammany Heart and Vascular Institute always provide state-ofthe-art cardiovascular care in our nationally accredited facility,” Dr. Aduli says. “We do not practice ‘organ-specific’ medicine. Yes, we are heart specialists, but my philosophy is that your entire body works together, and each part affects another.” Voted Northshore’s Best Cardiologist in 2011, Dr Aduli attributes this honor to all of his co-workers at St Tammany Heart and Vascular Institute, St Tammany Parish Hospital, Lakeview Regional Medical and Louisiana Heart Hospital who give 100 percent to patient care every day. “From the receptionist to the physicians, it takes everyone to create the best experience for our patients,” he says. “Dr. Aduli has been an active staff cardiologist with St. Tammany Parish Hospital since 2000, delivering on the promise of world class health care close to home with high quality care and excellent
patient outcomes,” says Sharon Toups, FACHE, Sr. VP/COO at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. “At St. Tammany Heart and Vascular Institute, we never lose sight of the patient. Spending ample time taking care of the entire patient is our goal. We advise them on ways to keep heart healthy, while we address their medical needs. Every member of our team consistently treats each patient with the same level of care and respect we would for members of our own families,” Dr. Aduli says. He encourages everyone to be aware of their risk factors for heart disease and address them early on. “Family history, high cholesterol and triglyceride numbers, high blood pressure and smoking are all risk factors. Take action if you can.” He says a comprehensive initial screening including blood work, an echocardiogram and a cardiac calcium scan can produce a clear diagnosis for the average person. “I would say that through this screening, we can catch roughly 99 percent of early heart disease in
high risk patients. Once you know it is there, you can treat it.” “Dr. Aduli is no stranger to the Cath Lab. He has performed a combined average of 750 diagnostic catheterizations, including carotid artery and coronary stent procedures, per year. He is one of the most experienced physicians on the Northshore in treating congenital holes in the heart that may be responsible for the occurrence of unexplained strokes,” notes Jeffery Kitch, APRN. Problems like poor circulation, congenital heart defects and carotid artery issues, are treated with the latest, minimally invasive technology available like medicated balloon stents. Because he approaches each patient as an individual, Dr. Aduli feels compelled to not just diagnose cardiac issues, but also to offer applicable solutions. “Technology has come such a long way. Medicated stents are just one example,” he stresses. “The patient’s only option does not have to be invasive open heart surgery or a lifetime of swallowing several pills every day. These less invasive choices leave the

Voted Northshore’s Best visit to Dr. Aduli, and a few diagnostic procedures, my wife Lori and I left town. Dr. Aduli called us and suggested that we come back and address certain problems pretty quickly. We came home, he placed a defibrillator, and I was back on my way. Since then, I have only improved,” Chef Paul recounts. “He did it in such a way that I realized the urgency, but I knew that I could trust him with my care. When you have a good doctor, he can help you get back on your feet.” His faith in his trusted doctor extends beyond the exam room. Chef Paul and his wife are now in collaboration with Dr. Aduli on a new seasoning line that is both salt and sugar free. “We brought this idea to him and since that time we have developed approximately 30 to 40 formulas. Six of them are on the market now,” Chef Paul says. “We travel the country speaking to dieticians and food professionals, sharing the new product and they are certainly on board—in fact most just want to know how they can get it.” Currently

open heart surgery option for the future if it comes to that. This can ultimately mean a longer, more productive quality of life for patients with heart disease, and that is our goal.” Dr. Aduli describes the essence of his practice as caring and he describes himself when it comes to treating patients as “reasonably aggressive.” “If I feel a riskier procedure can benefit a seriously ill patient long-term, I will offer them that option,” he says. “I will exhaust all efforts to help a patient obtain a better quality of life.” So when celebrated Chef Paul Prudhomme began to feel less and less like himself, his daughter-in-law (a physician) suggested that he visit Dr. Aduli. “Dr. Aduli bespeaks the quality of health care we have here in our own region. He does what he does so well and so simply. He really takes away the worry. Everything he has done has made me feel better and feel stronger.” Chef Paul experienced this “reasonable aggressiveness” firsthand. “After my initial

FOR BOTH NEW patients and established patients, Dr. Gary Agena, board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, has one goal in mind when it comes to his practice—life-long care in a warm, family-friendly environment. “Each patient who comes to me is an individual,” he says. “I customize each patient’s care to their needs. And I establish a lasting, ongoing relationship with them.” Offering complete, comprehensive, gynecologic and obstetric care, Dr. Agena treats patients from premenstrual to postmenopausal, with needs on every level. From adolescent young women experiencing their first visit to the gynecologist, to expectant mothers, to patients in need of medical intervention through surgery, he treats women at every stage in life. “I am certified in the daVinci® robotic surgical system and I am a certified instructor as well,” he notes. “My patients are not just a number. I work on their needs even after they leave. And if for some reason, I feel I need to check in with a patient, myself or one of the nurses will check in just to make sure everything is okay.” With the philosophy that healthy families are made up of healthy individuals, Dr. Agena offers patients a long-term plan to reach their optimum health and wellness goals. “If a patient comes to me with a goal of becoming healthier by quitting smoking, or losing weight, I will take that extra ten minutes to help them formulate a solution,” he says. I have a vested interest in their well-being, and I think I can offer a different perspective on approaching a problem. It matters to me that they reach their goals.” Actively involved in the health care community, Dr. Agena will appear on the local television show Health Quest in October. He also teaches monthly educational courses at two area hospitals. For new patients or parents seeking a health care provider for their adolescent daughters, Dr. Agena is happy to sit down one on one for a consultation before the initial visit. “I am available to all of my patients. Patients rarely call, even after hours, without getting an immediate or extremely fast response,” he says. “It all comes down to the respect I have for each one of my patients. I try to treat them equally and I strive to be a better physician each and every day.”

DOES IT REALLY help to start exercising in our 40s or 50s? Or by that time have we left it too late to do much good? Investigators at the University of Texas and The Cooper Institute have found that we should still “go for it.” According to their recent study, being physically active during mid-life helps extend lifespan and increases the chances of aging healthily and preventing chronic illness. Analyses of 18,670 patients showed that when patients increased fitness levels by 20 percent in their 30s, 40s and 50s, they decreased their chances of developing chronic diseases like congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease and colon cancer decades later by 20 percent. “What sets this study apart is that it focuses on the relationship between mid-life fitness and quality of life in later years,” said Benjamin Willis, MD, MPH, lead author of the study. “Fitter individuals aged well with fewer chronic illnesses to impact their quality of life.”

My parents are coming to visit this month from Australia. They are in their 70s but look amazing. They’re still working out most days and climbing mountains. Literally climbing mountains! Now that’s the kind of life that you may be able to have in your retirement if you start exercising now. It is pretty clear, that if we want to live long, live well, and like the way we look, it is important to exercise. So what are you waiting on? Find a health club and a physical therapist that can work hand-in-hand to make sure that your exercise program is fun, safe and effective. And don’t worry that you’ve left it too late. It seems that it’s never too late to make a difference.

to the dedication of local plastic surgeons and general surgeons who promote awareness of this option. The American Society of Plastic surgeons (ASPS) and the Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) were also alarmed by this lack of dissemination of information nationally. Despite a federal mandate which requires that all breast cancer patients have knowledge of both their reconstruction options, and knowledge that insurance companies must cover the procedure they choose, there are still patients slipping through the cracks in the system. “Of the 250,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone, only a small percentage will undergo reconstruction. In fact, only three out of ten women will even be informed of their reconstructive options. These statistics are concerning at a time when information is so easily available and dispersed through the internet,” Dr. Cooper indicates. “As plastic surgeons, we are presented almost daily with a patient that has survived breast cancer but is permanently scarred from the procedure. We can’t go back in time and change that, we can only work with what we have been presented. The patients are
distraught and we know this part of their recovery could have been prevented with greater collective and preventative energy by physicians and surgeons.” The first ever National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day or BRA day will be held in the United States on October 17, in New Orleans. This is the inaugural event of a two year campaign to empower women with information about their breast reconstruction choices. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation and The Center for Restorative Breast Surgery (Dr. Sullivan and Dr. DellaCroce) are National Sponsors of this event. Dr. Michele Cooper is a local sponsor. To learn more about the first ever BRA Day visit www.breastcenter.com, 504-899-2800. Find Dr. Michele M. Cooper at www.michelecoopermd.com, 985-626-6163. FOR THE PATIENT, a breast cancer diagnosis is devastating enough, but concern over how their body may be permanently scarred and disfigured can further deepen their anxiety. Often times, in the rush to rid themselves of the cancer the patient fails to investigate her reconstructive options prior to having her mastectomy or lumpectomy performed. “Having this information ahead of time would not only give patients the peace of mind of being whole after surgery, but it greatly impacts the aesthetic outcome of the case,” says Dr. Michele Cooper, a Mandeville plastic surgeon and St. Charles Surgical Hospital staff member. Seeing this deficiency and the further stress and trauma it adds to these women’s lives at an already vulnerable time, Drs. Scott Sullivan and Frank DellaCroce, cofounders of the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery at the St. Charles Surgical Hospital, have devoted their careers to changing this. St. Charles Surgical Hospital is the only hospital in the world dedicated to breast cancer reconstruction. “Our ideal standard for breast reconstruction is a coordinated effort between the general surgeon and the plastic surgeon. We work in concert to first remove only the breast tissue from the affected breast. We leave an empty component of breast skin in tact, and in many cases the nipple too. Micro surgically transplanted tissue from another area of the body is then used to fill the breast. The patient awakens from surgery with a breast very much like their previous one—and often better,” notes Dr. Sullivan. According to Dr. Cooper, the New Orleans metropolitan area has a higher percentage of patients who undergo mastectomy and reconstruction together, and utilize their own breast tissue, than other areas of the state as well as the nation. Do I Need a Prenup? MOST PEOPLE ARE familiar with the term “prenuptial agreement” (or prenup), but in Louisiana the true legal term is a “marriage contract”. Before deciding whether or not you need one, it is important to know how our law works without one. Not only is Louisiana a civil law jurisdiction (and the only state that is) we are also a “community property” state (along with eight other states). If you marry without confecting a prenup, then you and your spouse are subject to the legal regime of the “community of acquets and gains”. The community regime means that all assets acquired during the marriage are presumed to be owned as “community property”. This means that both husband and wife each own an “undivided” one-half ownership in all assets. The exception, of course, would be property that one spouse acquires as a gift or an inheritance. The property that was inherited or owned prior to marriage is called the “separate property” of that spouse. However, the income that is produced from that separate property is community property! Many people mistakenly believe that the income from their separate property (let’s say rental income) is also their separate property. Even if you keep that rental income in a completely separate

account, without the other spouse’s name on it, it is still considered to be “community property”. If you wish to completely renounce the community regime and basically remain the same financially as you were the day before your marriage, then you must execute a marriage contract before you marry (or within one year of moving into Louisiana). You may also terminate the community post-marriage but then you must go to Court. If you are already married and do not wish to terminate the entire community regime but merely want the income from your separate property to remain “separate”, then you can confect what is called an “Article 2339” declaration. The 2339 is a simple notarial act (no Court needed) that must be filed in conveyance records to properly notify “third persons”. Now it is up to you to decide whether or not you want to modify how our law works regarding your marital assets.

Weight Loss Surgery Saved My Life—Twice The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana
Three weeks later she noticed that her bra wasn’t fitting quite right. “I thought it was because I’d lost so much weight, then I felt a large knot in my right breast. I was scared to death and the next day I was in my doctor’s office.” She was diagnosed with Scarf –Bloom Richardson Grade 3—an invasive ductal carcinoma that is very aggressive and has a high propensity for reoccurrence. A week later Madeline had a double mastectomy. After six months of chemotherapy, a 10 day stay in ICU, and 25 radiation treatments, she began rebuilding her strength and stamina. This month Madeline will celebrate her “third birthday.” She will be cancer-free for three years. And at 138 pounds lighter she has the energy to care for her two-year-old grandchild. “I’m alive today because of weight loss surgery. I’d done self breast exams for years but because I was so overweight, I just didn’t feel the lump.” Dr. French concurs. “Like most of my patients, Madeline was familiar with the harmful effects of obesity related to her high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes but had

In fact post-menopausal women who are obese are 30 percent more likely to develop breast cancer and 50 percent more likely to die of their disease. Part of that increase in mortality rate is definitely related to a delay in diagnosis due to difficulty feeling the mass on self breast exam or on physical examination by the patient’s physician.” As Madeline shared her story and finished her makeover at H2O salon, the teary-eyed staff stood in line to hug her and wish her well. “I’m off to see Dr. French. I’m going to tell him thank you—again. If it wasn’t for him and weight loss surgery, I wouldn’t have lost the weight and found the lump. I wouldn’t be here today. He saved my life—twice!” The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana and Mississippi offer free weight loss surgery seminars on a weekly basis in various locations. MADELINE COUVILLIER LOVED rodeos, monster truck shows, craft fairs and Paula Deen. Watching her grandson play football was the highlight of her week, but at 338 pounds, climbing the bleachers every Friday night was excruciatingly painful. And even though it was difficult doing all of these activities, it wasn’t until Madeline overheard her grandson talking about her that she decided to do something about her weight. “I cried and cried when I heard my grandson say he was embarrassed to be with me because I was so big,” Madeline says with tears in her eyes. June 8, 2009 was the day that changed her life in more ways than one. Dr. Matt French, Partner at the Surgical Specialists of Louisiana, performed a laparoscopic gastric bypass and within 24 hours Madeline stopped taking her many daily medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. “I went home without one ounce of pain. I had to peek under my bandages to make sure I’d had surgery!” she jokes. At her three month post-op visit with Dr. French she had lost 80 pounds and was feeling great. “Weight loss surgery was so easy for me!”

I’VE BEEN VERY lucky to meet many happy cancer survivors in my industry. These folks are full of life and have beaten this disease. My Dad will hopefully join the ranks of this group after his upcoming treatments. I often see breast cancer survivors. After radiation and chemotherapy treatments, many lose the hair not only on their heads but all over their bodies. They tell me how nice it would be if only the hair on their heads returned. Unfortunately, it seems, after such treatments facial hair returns full force. My clients, now burdened with the additional effects of unwanted facial hair, want to look as healthy as they now feel, so a more natural method of hair removal is the answer. Body Sugaring is the all-natural alternative to laser, electrolysis and waxing. The sugar is extremely gentle and has been around since the days of Cleopatra. The sugar paste comprised of sugar, lemon and water, removes hair from the root. It leaves the skin silky and soft so makeup goes on smoothly and makes the face look like it’s been airbrushed. The hair growth slows down and in time stops altogether, in every area treated. The foot detox system pulls post-treatment poisons from the body from the over 2,000 pores on each foot. In a short 30-minute session, the feet are immersed in plain tap water and a special machine is used to detoxify the entire body. We gain an idea of what is going on in the body by the color of the water after the treatment is complete. The water will turn from clear to orange to brown as the result of toxicity. Other avenues of detox include massage and body wraps. Regular visits to your local day spa will help bring you to an ideal healthier state.

The Girls of Swirl—Courtney, Celie and Sibyl Stumm Pinkberry Yogurt

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

FOR THE STUMM SISTERS—Courtney, Celie and Sibyl—their collective passion since as far back as they can remember consists of three things; family, friends and food. “We have always had fun together as a family,” Courtney says. “We ate dinner around the table as a family every night, and our parents encouraged us to try whatever we wanted to try, they did not force us down any certain path.” In their current business endeavor, the award-winning Pinkberry Yogurt, the impact of their cohesive, positive upbringing is pervasive on every level. “Our mission every day at Pinkberry is to refresh everyone,” Celie notes. “We want to reset someone’s day and surprise and delight them when they come into one of our stores.” The women recall as teens enjoying yogurt near their uptown home nearly every day after school. “We had a yogurt club,” Courtney remembers. “We made such great memories.” As adults, the girls still loved to grab yogurt on occasion with their parents, but their favorite uptown shop was a casualty of Hurricane Katrina. One evening they found themselves having to drive out to Metairie for yogurt, and that is when they decided it was time to bring their favorite dessert back to their own neighborhood. “We immediately thought, ‘Why not make something happen here?’” Celie recalled a wonderful yogurt she’d had on a recent trip to
Los Angeles, and she was determined to introduce her family to the product she loved so much. At the time, Pinkberry was just beginning to franchise, but in much bigger markets than New Orleans. Determined to introduce her family to the flavors she could not forget, she led the rest of the Stumms to New York to try it out. “We were literally on our way to Pinkberry in New York when Pinkberry executives called to invite us out to Los Angeles to discuss a New Orleans location. In the end, we were the second new market to open outside of New York and Los Angeles.” With a product they all believed in and a partnership with a company whose values were in sync with their own, the first Pinkberry location in New Orleans was opened in April of 2010. “We wanted to bring a worthy product to our hometown,” Celie says. “We knew that bringing in an outside product was a risk, and still we believe so much in this one, we felt we could not pass up the opportunity to share it. In short, if we did not do Pinkberry, we were not going to do frozen yogurt.” With additional locations now on Canal Street, their most recent here on the Northshore, and one slated to open in Harahan, the sisters are fully immersed in the metropolitan area. “We are local, and we are out in the community every day where we strive to be a partner,” Sibyl says. “What we enjoy most is enjoying our city and spending time

with positive people. Luckily, we now are able to that every day in our shops.” Touting Mandeville as business-friendly, family-oriented and one of the closest-knit communities they have ever seen, the ladies say they were eager to share this product with another integral part of the metro area. Pinkberry has taken an active civic role with programs like the Swirly Scholarship Contest in which each area high school nominates a senior, the school creates and names a flavor, and the flavor that is most often purchased at the end of the contest wins. The prize is a $1500 scholarship for the named senior. What makes Pinkberry so delectable, according to the ladies, is the level of quality in each product. “We cut fresh fruit every day, we use only natural, hormone-free skim milk, and real non-fat yogurt,” Celie says. “Pinkberry strives to be the most innovative yogurt retailer in the world. They have just launched a fresh—not frozen—fat-free Greek yogurt with both sweet and savory toppings that will be available in stores nationwide come January.” “Not only that,” adds Courtney, “we make the product our own on so many levels,” she says. “And we really are like a family. We have seen our employees through new babies, breast cancer, and many other major life experiences. We also reward team member excellence. Unlike other selfserve shops, we serve you. We value the customer interaction. We get to know our regular customers and we are in our shops every day. We want your customer experience to be different when you come to see us.” While they work together to make their business a success, each
sister brings her own expertise to the table. “We intrinsically know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Courtney says. Sibyl handles much of the behind the scenes marketing, while Celie brings her passion for food, and Courtney crunches the numbers. But the sisters all agree that their Director of Operations, Lon Nichols is who they refer to as “the glue that holds us all together.” They do admit that working together as a family has its challenges, but because of the role models they have in their parents, they are able to meet them headon. “Our father puts everything in perspective,” Celie notes. “He has always led our family with such a sense of optimism and he stressed what was really important; family and good health. He is a role model.” Their mother impressed on her daughters her own strengths. “There is no one on the planet like our mother,” Courtney says. “She is kind-hearted and loving and she brings a little light into everything.” Sibyl adds, “We are a close family and we do have our moments, but we are happy, because at the end of the day no matter what happens at work, we have each other, and this one-of-a-kind place we call home.” Pinkberry is located at 3460 Highway 190 in Mandeville, 985-612-7306. They have two other locations in New Orleans at 300 Canal St., 504-899-4260 and 5601 Magazine Street, 504-899-4260. Their new location in Elmwood is set to open in October. Visit them on the web to learn more about fundraising opportunities and Pinkberry catering www.pinkberry.com. “We wanted to bring a worthy product to our hometown,” Celie says.

WHILE ATTENDING COLLEGE, I worked as a gas station attendant in the days when stations provided full service. An eight-gallon minimum purchase also bought a check of all tires and fluids under the hood, cleaning of all windows, and vacuuming of the interior. Then the gas shortage of the Carter years came. In just a few weeks, lines of cars encircled the block for a maximum purchase of eight gallons with no time for the extra services. Times had changed forever. As physicians contemplate the upcoming Obama health care mandates which will increase the 2014 Medicaid rolls alone by 17 to 33 million people, including prisoners and parolees (but not parole officers), there’s a realization that things will change forever in medical clinics to accommodate the huge increase in patient demand. Many doctors have already decided to retire or to restrict their practices because Medicaid reimbursements are not enough to cover costs, and soon private insurance reimbursements will also fall. Waiting room congestion and delays will increase as providers will be required to stay within mandates which limit services. Some of us will try to continue to serve the needs of our communities as best we can, but we will need an ever-increasing number of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and others involved in direct patient care as well as our own little bureaucracies to handle the behemoth national health care bureaucracy about to be born. And we will need your patience. Please know that, although we didn’t ask for this, we shall try mightily to continue to render the best care we can, just as years ago we pumped away the long lines, eight gallons at a time.

Spicy Stuffed Poblanos — Paleo Style
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wash poblanos, and cut lengthwise to make a nice shell to stuff. Wash out all of the seeds, and place the peppers on a cooking pan, open side up. Bake in oven at 350 for about 20
minutes, to soften shells. While the peppers are cooking, prepare the meat stuffing. In a large skillet over high heat, add olive oil and garlic and heat until there is a fragrant smell. Add the onions and cook until they become translucent. This takes just a few minutes. Next, add the ground beef until it is fully cooked and brown. Add the remainder of the ingredients and blend them with the meat. Lower the heat to a simmer and Colors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. let these flavors meld for about 15 minutes. This ad may not be used without permission from G&A Publishing. Failure to acknowledge or return this proof will Remember to check the peppers and remove after 20 minutes or when the shells are soft. Let the meat stuffing and poblanos cool for a few minutes. This makes them easier to work with. When cooled enough to handle, stuff the poblanos with the meat mixture and place back on the baking sheet. Return them to the 350 degree oven for approximately 30 minutes, and you are ready to serve. Makes six poblano peppers

HANNA, AGE 10, had difficulty staying awake and focusing in class. At night, her sleep patterns were disrupted, and she was agitated and irritable at home with her family. After a series of neurofeedback sessions, Hanna’s teachers reported that she was staying awake during class, focusing, and participating appropriately. Her sleep patterns improved, and her temperament evened out. Many factors affect the deregulation of the brain, (including diet, sleep, stress, etc.). Neurofeedback can be helpful in a majority of cases to retrain the brain that is out of balance. Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive technique utilizing a learning process to rebalance the brainwaves that are out of sync. It has been shown to improve cognitive function, attention, mood, anxiety, sleep and behavior. Over time the brain learns to reopen the pathways that were closed or disconnected due to trauma or general imbalances. The first step is to attend a complimentary consultation with a neurofeedback technician. After the decision is made to undergo neurofeedback training, a QEEG, (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) or brain mapping is performed to evaluate how the different regions of the brain communicate in a colored format, allowing for an individualized training plan. During the training sessions, the client plays a game or watches a movie solely controlled by their brain activity. When the brainwaves are balanced, the movie or game plays; likewise when the brainwaves are not balanced, the movie or games pauses or dims. So over time, the brain learns to retrain itself.

WHEN CINDY FISCHER, an RN, saw the need for a nurse advocacy company in the Northshore area, she decided to jump in feet first. Teaming up with some of the top health care professionals in the area, the newly developed team created Gifted Nurses. “We offer a holistic approach to our care,” said Mullady Voelker, President of Growth and Development. From infants to the elderly, Gifted Nurses offers care on every level. “Our mission is to help clients maintain or gain independence in the home, so that all of their options stay open,” explained Mullady. “There is no situation too small or too involved for our team.” The company has expanded into four different states and attributes their teambased approach as just one of the things which sets them apart. Gifted Nurses views the families as a “functioning system.” “We want to do our part so that [the system] can function as well as possible.” She also notes

Women Build—Communities Grow Habitat For Humanity St. Tammany West Chapter
32
“GIRLS PLAY HOUSE, women build them.” This tag line that sums up exactly what the Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West (HFHSTW) chapter will do this October at the Groves at Mile Branch. The annual Women Build gives women an opportunity to work with families in need, and gives them the tools to make a difference in their communities by building homes with partner families, who might not otherwise be able to own a home through traditional means. They help them realize their dream and participate in making it happen. “Women Build is so rewarding,” notes Darnell Shuart, Co-chair of the 2012 Women Build. “It is a solid part of the community now. It is one area that showcases what women can do when they collectively focus on a cause.” Darnell, who has worked with HFHSTW and Women Build for many years, stresses that women also take away
practical life skills, like installing windows, hanging shingles and actually raising walls. For Karen Slaton, PHD, and Co-chair of the 2012 Women Build, her involvement some years ago opened her eyes to a need in St. Tammany for affordable housing for people who need it. “What I love about Habitat is that it is not a handout,” she says. “The partner families are expected to put sweat equity into not only their homes, but into others’ homes as well. It is really a hand up, and it is some of the hardest work I have ever done, so I know the families who do it every day, are working hard themselves.” “Like any venture, you take small steps,” Darnell says. “It seems that Women Build has gone up that extra step. People want to help. They want to get involved.” Contact HFHSTW at 985-893-3172, or visit www.habitatstw.org to learn more.
the effectiveness of the case management component, explaining that Cindy will personally visit patients, regardless of the hour. Gifted Nurses’ team members are referred to as “Gifted Ones.” By each employee knowing the other on a personal level, they are “like a little family.” “When we hire a new staff member, we ask ourselves if this is a person we would want caring for our own mother, son or daughter,” Mullady says. “We know that is what our patients expect from us.” To contact Gifted Nurses call 1-888-566-8773. I WANT TO take this opportunity to personally thank the City of Slidell employees for their hard work and dedication to our city, especially during Hurricane Isaac. The effort of our essential personnel during Isaac was one of the most extraordinary displays of teamwork I have ever had the privilege to witness. I was Police Chief during Hurricane Katrina and no one could have predicted the nightmare that would follow in Katrina’s aftermath. But I can tell you that for Isaac, the City of Slidell was prepared. It was a smooth, coordinated effort between city employees and departments, the Slidell Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office, and St. Tammany Parish government and elected officials on the local, state and national level, as well as first responders and support crews. Everyone worked together to support our citizens. Many of the city employees slept in their vehicles, on air mattresses, or uncomfortable cots in the Emergency Operation Center. They were away from their homes

and their families, putting the city’s needs before their own. To those family members—every husband and wife, mother and father, child and grandchild—thank you for lending us your family members during our time of need. I have received many compliments about Slidell’s efforts before, during and after Isaac. But I can’t take all the credit. It’s the employees and police who were out in the field in the driving wind and torrential rain, rescuing people, removing fallen trees, manning pump stations, and fixing breaches in the levee. It’s the people who cooked to feed the weary crews, those who took care of administrative requirements, those who answered the phones, and those who updated our city website and social media pages to keep you informed of our progress. Our success in weathering the storm is a testament to those employees’ hard work and devotion to our City.
The effort of our essential personnel during Isaac was one of the most extraordinary displays of teamwork I have ever had the privilege to witness.

Barbeque at its Best
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK once said, “Beam me up, Scotty. There is no good BBQ on this planet.” Obviously he was not on our beautiful planet earth during Ponchatoula’s flavorful Party in the Pits. The fifth annual International Barbeque Cookers Association (IBCA) “State Championship” cook-off event will be held in the midst of Indian summer on Saturday, October 20 in Memorial Park. Each year cooks from all corners of Louisiana, as well as from neighboring states, travel to our historic city to compete against the best and the most creative BBQ teams in the South. Cash prizes of over $5000 make this the largest cash award in the state. Adding more money to the pot, this year’s Party in the Pits has been chosen the ‘money-added’ event by the IBCA. Party in
the Pits has been recognized as one of the premier BBQ events; and as such, last year’s grand champion has been invited to attend the World BBQ Championship in Las Vegas. Participants and spectators are expected to number in the hundreds. The Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce encourages all to gather a five-member team to grill chicken, ribs and brisket and join in the fun. Traditionally men have made up the teams, so women, show the guys that you can do more than slave over a hot stove. Scotty, beam me to Ponchatoula for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Party in the Pits! Please call 1-800-617-4502 for more information on participation and sponsorship.
Chamber Offers Small Business Services
WRITTEN BY MARY LEE WEST CHAMBER
THE ONGOING DECLINE in the national economy has taken its toll on many area businesses. In response, The Chamber has placed a strong focus on the support services we offer our small business members. Through our partnership with SCORE and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southeastern Louisiana University, we offer business counseling for our members. Whether you are considering starting your own business or need to grow an existing one, both organizations can provide sound advice on how to proceed. We also offer members an array of networking opportunities including B2B, a business-to-business promotional experience; Speed Dating for Business, a quick-paced networking event; monthly Business After
Hours and luncheons. Recently, we began offering advertising opportunities to our members, including online ads on our new website, ads in our weekly Chamber Update email newsletter, and bi-weekly promotional e-blasts. These exclusive, members-only marketing avenues provide an excellent way to reach area residents. We also provide members business exposure through our Membership Guide & Directory. The 2012-2013 directories are being distributed parish-wide not only to our members but around town at local coffee shops, restaurants, etcetera. With over half of 2012 behind us, our Chamber looks forward to continuing to provide services that support our business community.

Local Nonprofit Needs Support
38
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness) St. Tammany offers free support, educational and advocacy services to individuals with mental illnesses as well as their families. This local nonprofit organization partners with State Legislators, the Judicial Court, the Sheriff’s Office and the Public School system to offer suicide prevention assistance through awareness and education. With the closure of Southeast Louisiana Hospital, NAMI St. Tammany will potentially lose 64 percent of its operating budget. Now, more than ever, we are asking for support from our community. Their fundraiser, “FRAME OF MIND” will be held on October 6. This art opening features artists with a diagnosed mental illness. Their work is available
for purchase with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the artist. NAMI St. Tammany receives only the funds from ticket sales and sponsorships. For more information visit, www.namisttammany.org. Mandeville’s own Krewe of Lyra has forged an alliance with NAMI. Lyra’s mission is to positively assist individuals whose lives are impacted by mental illness. Lyra is currently looking to expand and is inviting interested ladies 21 and over, to join in their mission. Contact them at lyramuse@gmail.com. We are fortunate to be the home of The Krewe of Eve and The Original Krewe of Orpheus, two seasoned philanthropic organizations who have also graciously given back to our community.
