LECTURE

by Greg Missingham

REFLECTION Developing design ideas, This lecture is relevant enough to my current studio because I am stuck. The feedback that I get is, not that constructive (it isn’t a criticsm, but saying I am on the right track.) For me, that is not enough. How to use previous exercises to start developing my concept? It’s overwhelming. The lectures in Earth is giving to many ideas, which isn’t good. I need to eliminate things. morphing the ideas? Or start to consider things using the scale of consideration? Or use SCAMPER? Can’t think.

I come back to UHÁHFW RQ WKH above passages.

Okay, in previous PLP/MASS/F&I exercises, I am more interested in MASS. In MASS, I explore subtraction, and rotation. And now, I am going tosubtract the earth, How am I going to do it? In what way? Either I will let go and visit it later, or try to organise it. And, this time, the ‘aaah’ moment is midnight when I woke up from sleep. It’s sudden. And, it’s true, sometimes, I don;t need to think to get the answer. I t will justify itself. Maybe I should not think so hard next time. Or, maybe I can use the strategies in the lecture to slowly further my design process.

REFLECTION FAST diagram helps me to justify a part of elements and ideas to explore in developing earth project. Left side is the reasoning, while right side is the brief. Vertical is what should I consider when designing of a particulat area. This diagram is helpful to show the overall process of how am I going to reason with each design decision that I made. For future refernce, I might or might not use this technique to assist me in evaluating my design. On second thought, this can be another type of checklists that I can use for verbal presentation. It’s similar to mind map, it just have structure to it.

WORKSHOP

ACTIVITY 1: RUBRIC FOR DESIGN STUDIO REFLECTION I think this exercise is answering how tutors are assessing us. There are lots of consideration. I will never look at the assignment rubrics the same again. When I told my friend, Zaza (she’s studying at Bartlett), she aggreed with me that what am I learning in this subject will help students/designers to think properly. She complaint that in her school, there is no subject equivalent to design workshop. Maybe her school expect the students to learn/know this formal design process by themselves? Not only using instinct and intuition. Designing is a logical and rational process but I never see it that way. And to evaluate yourself, it is a good thing to do. Evaluating my own project and compare my evaluation with feedbacks from other people will show me, how to do think. Am I think too highly of my project, or am I degrading my project. Anyway, I need to practice this self-evaluation so that I can make better decision later in design develiopment.

REFLECTION I am anticipating to know what is this lecture is about. Assessing the students. I am the student. Decision matrices used in architecture school? It is easily manipulated; change the criteria, scoring method and mark weightage. And Greg commented that this is a good system? Hm. Yes - we VWXGHQWV JHW EHQLÀWV IURP LW " (DV\ IRU WKH HYDOXDWRU to tweak the percentage according to overall performance of the students..? Oh, i don’t know. It’s just a speculation. Another thing is, why we can’t get 100% in our projects? Does anyone desrve to get 100%? In my opinion, it is possible to get 100%, as it depands on the criteria and weightage. But, they don’t really deserve it in a sense that we cannot evaluate everything about a project. It is a bit too much. Maybe that’s why in Earth studio, there are only 5 criteria maximum, while in DDF, there is only 4 criteria. I agree with both subjects; considering the amount of knowledge that the student already have and what they are going to learn.

Built adjacent to Golibar slum in central Mumbai, this 27-storey tower is home to a single family and currently holds the title of the world’s most expensive private residence The project has received widespread disapproval from the residents of Mumbai who argue the tower is insensitive and excessive

The critic is pointing out the huge socioeconomic inequality in India. I do agree with the crits. It is insensitive. There is a lot that the money to build that house can do for the people. Beginning in the 1960s, QXPHURXV SUROLÀF architects including Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto launched unsuccessful campaigns to modernize Gaudi’s designs, suggesting his work had become dated and irrelevant.

I would love to be inside the temple. It’s very interesting to see that this building can teach us about 200years of architecture (method, design, style). I have no comment on the cost of construction or the appearance or anything. Well, in previous years, I do thought that this building is hideous (sorry, still naive that time). After learning about architecture history last year, I become more appreciative to buildings around me even though I still don’t like it.

First, we make the assessment rubric ourselves, hence, we will put the best percentage of marks to what we think as the best. It is so unfair, dont you think? Yes and no. There are rationality behind it, DV ZH ZLOO ORRN EDFN DW WKH SHUVRQDOLW\ ÀUP GHFLVLRQ tree and brief. That’s what our group aggreed upon. And, that’s where we want people to assess us with.

Inspiration This is the result from 4 days workshop for students to learning parametric software. It is good. Simple in fact. The form, material and digital process is easy to understand. Compared to our progress in DDF, it’s different. Maybe because we just started learning digital craftmanship for a year. By 4 or 5 years later, we will be ble to do things like this, maybe still need to develop softskills and gain more experience. Anyway, this project inspire our DDF design. It is our turning point. This homework do helps me in preparing for Earth presentation. I started to do think about the board during my conceptacle development, 3 weeks before the presentation day. Knowing what to put in the board helps me to eliminate unnecessary elements and ease my design development. REFLECTION It went great. My presentation board attract viewers because I use different style and vibrant colours. The C3 lecture is assisting me how to start with talking DERXW ZKDW GR , ÀQG LQWHUHVWLQJ DQG H[SODLQ KRZ it relates to my concepts. Narrating from the point of being a user(how we use the space) engage the audience more rather than talking about the design process. And keep using positive words and just talk about the good stuff really works. Haha. Two most important points are: explaining my project to others and preparing the text. I will try to never fail doing this for any presentation. Just be prepared and HYHU\WKLQJ ZLOO EH ÀQH However, the presentation is a bit lacking in physical model. The model did not really show the aesthetic of what am I saying and presenting. The feedback is, my visual and verbal parts are more poetic, but the model is not that poetic. I tried, but laser cutting is not that suitable. Maybe next time, maybe use clay, plaster, concrete or wax for the model. Hence, there is harmony in visual, verbal, and physical presentation to sell my ideas.

ACTIVITY 1: REDESIGN THINGS THAT YOU HATE REFLECTION How do I evaluate MSD? Most probably the convinece. I have no disagreement on anything that is good, or what the building suppose to look like, or what it’s function. The experience and material also is good enough. However, the space. The use of space. We need more space. It is understandable to have that big atrium, but there is a lot of unused spaces also. Anyway, to change something that we don’t like might make things worse. We might be the only one ewho do not like it. It’s subjective, unless I can make decision/evaluate from an objective perspective. That’s why we need rubrics, guidelines, standards. In studio, the tutor(s) are marking our work based on the assessment rubrics. If there is no rubric, what will happend? It will depanded more on the magic and sparkles of a particular project. Is it true? Yes? No? I only can answer this question later in life, or maybe not.

ACTIVITY 2: THE GRAND DEBATE REFLECTION A debate on famous buildings. 3 teams: the optimists, the haters and the adjudicators. It’s hard to hate buildings that you like and support buildings that you dont like. This activity teaches me that, to sell your idea, it not only matter on how good your deisgn process, the development, the rationality and etc, if you are not presenting properly. Verbal explaination have an effect on the hearer. In any presentation, WKH ÀUVW LPSUHVVLRQ LV WKH ERDUG DQG PRGHO WKLQJV ZH FDQ VHH ,I WKH ÀUVW VWHS VLJKW LV LQWHUHVWLQJ WR WKHP WKH\ ZDQW PRUH H[SODLQDWLRQ YHUEDO , DP FRQÀGHQW in my ability to attarct/convince people with my hardskill. For the second step, verbal, is where I need to do preparation. Really.

haters win

optimists win

we as judges It’s a wonder when a building like this can’t win. I learn that, we need to back up our arguments/presentation with solid UHVHDUFK DQG XVH IRU MXVWLÀFDWLRQ

we as haters Hamster cage? Haha. I notice that we back up our ideas with emotional and personal means. The bad stuff that we said (others mostly) are not compelling to the judges. Maybe the judges are rational people

optimists win

optimists win

we as judges I don’t know this building. I don’t know KRZ WR MXGJH WKLV EXLOGLQJ RQ ÀUVW impression. It’s not ugly nor pretty. It’s just, hm...

we as optimists Again, I do kind of understand why people dont like fed square. But, why do we need to hate it?

And, being the judge is hard to. To evaluate someone’s argument is condlicting. My personal opinions kept popping here and there while listening to their arguments.Do I need to be objective or subjective in this matter? Maybe, if there is any activities that recuire me to be a judge, I need to have a assessment rubric to make sure, I am not bias. Well, there is still bias, it’s just with more constraints.

ACTIVITY 3: 50 YEARS TO THE FUTURE REFLECTION , QHYHU OLWWOH DIÀQLW\ WR WHFKQRORJ\ ,W·V QRW , DP EDG with it, but it’s, plastic? I know, digital fabrication/ modelling/crafts is one thing. The use of computer to render, make models, store data, informations, as tools, as the canvas and almost anything now. It is here with the existance of designers/engineers/ thinkers/people who funded/managers/etc. Why do they think of the future? Are they evaluating the future as a better place, or they don’t want the future to be bad, hence they create these ideas/ concepts? (ex sustainability) Can we evaluate future? No. Evaluation is for the past. Yes, so we can make decision? What am I going to do? Do I need to evaluate everything? There some things that I can’t evaluate? The unseen (emotion/mind-reading) and stuff that I don’t know about. As far as I know, I can evaluate previous designs, projects that are done. And I can evaluate the present. Things that are happening now. But to evaluate future, No. As a designer, no.It’s hard to assess something that is not solid (abstract).

Inspiration Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens, Dandenong One day after the last class, me and my roommate went to Dandenong to breath. Literally and mentally. To take a forest walk is good. Just get away from the computer and it’s worth it. It’s the time to evaluate what had I been doing. Am I doing it right? Is there anything that I missed? And after all, we are designing our life, don’t we? Going to do the same with my daily life as what I do when designing my projects.
