proposal urban retreat

Conservation and privacy both are necessary for sociological and psychological well-being. The project aims to incorporate existing programmes of rejuvenation spaces into a transitional adventure of social interaction and social disengagement with intention of creating a low-stress society while strengthening the locale and rejuvenate it. The project intents to mediate between hectic daily activities and social spectrum. It also intends to mediate between the Spinningfield area and other areas to restore back social connectivity.

strategies threshold

Re-locate and re-arrange the spaces based on maximum human aerial view (30 - 62 degree). To allow visual connectivity and continuity hence connecting the culture within the urban fabric. An eave or overhang and smaller windows suggest that one can withdraw into the shadowed concealment.

strategies monolithic architecture study on surface treatment Experimental treatment The tectonic construction of temporary formwork can be expressed through the relief texture of the shuttering. “The timber shutters lined with cellophane or casting concrete onto paper gave the concrete surface wrinkles and visual discontinuity, creating an inexpensive, but visually rich texture (Jamie Fobert, Anderson House) Different texture and roughness give various quality and tactual experience within the space. It also defines the boundary and safeness of the spaces.

Casting model has been done to study on different kind of surface texture of the formwork

Small and narrow windows are implemented to restrict the view from outside to inside and maintaining a high level of privacy for the interior spaces. Windows are recessed deeply into the volume of the building that the effect of concealment can be achieved. Concealment is implicit in the recesses, while the overhanging spaces such as terraces and balconies suggest a panoramic outlook from within. Windows’ pocket in level 2

spaces of interaction the pool swimming in the pool introspecting in the dark

Water is the foundation of life and has energy, healing qualities, light and meditative inspiration. But we value the dark place of concealment too; this is where we procreate, and sleep, and meditate, and recover from illness and injury. It is our essential and reassuring haven in times of vulnerability.

spaces of interaction the RAMP standing on the ramp overlooking the city

There is little change in height from one space to another to suggest a zone of containment. Warm, dim, quiet, sheltered from view, and encouraging introspection. Being on another level of prospect giving pelasure to people, feeling superior and being hidden from generic view.

spaces of retreat the terrace

hiding at the terrace overlooking people movement

Small spaces of 1.5m wide and 2.5 meter high giving sense of cramp and suffocation. A kind of pleasure that emit fear and insecurities as when people feel pleasure when they feel pain. Walking to a dead and dark end of contemplation terrace giving a chance for the people to feel closer to themselves.

spaces of retreat the spa bathing in the hot air experiencing the light rays

Neutral environment of the sauna room giving a pleasure of being humble. All the city life are being equalized.

The building footprint allows cross ventilation to occur in each spaces because all of the spaces don’t have deep planning due to the blocks arrangement.

The building footprint was designed according to the lowest sun agle during winter. To allow the ray to pass across the site, the south west part of the building footprint was raised up to 6m hence creating a void and threshold facing the Wood Street.

Shadow casting

The slope angle of the ramp abide the BS for disabled people. However, it was explicitly designed as a long ramp to maximize the journey experience. Thus, making disabled people can’t access into the site without getting mobility help from the building workers.

The staircase core served as concealed space which lead to spaces of safety outside the building. The small footprint of the building allow easy escape in case of fire. Fire extinguisher also need to be provided as stated in BS part B. As the building is design as a two separated blocks, each block was provided with one extinguisher, making it two per floor, complying with the standard of providing one extinguisher per floor.
