Custody and Parenting Plan Mediation Parents strive to do right for their children and protect them in any manner they can. They chase away the nasty night time monsters hiding in the cupboards and make them eat their vegetables and take their medicine despite their wriggly protest. But if the marriage or relationship is over parents have much larger issues to protect them from. If you are divorcing or ending your relationship, with children the situation become even more stressful. You are probably struggling with thoughts such as whether you should rather not stay together for the sake of the children, what is it going to do to them and who will they hate in the end, to name a few, as the list is quite extensive. Family members are probably advising you “to think about the children” as you are going to turn their whole world upside down with your irresponsibility”. The reality is that children will handle the break up as well as you do. If you enter into a litigious battle in respect of every issue of your divorce or separation such as custody, access or maintenance, then the children will most probably emulate such adversarial behaviour now and in time to come.

Rocket Pesto Rocket pesto is one of my favourite stand-by items. I make up a big batch and keep it in the fridge for unexpected guests – spread it on crostinis, drizzle on top of tomato and mozzarella salad or toss it into hot pasta . It also freezes well. Spoon into suitable containers, add enough olive oil to cover the top, and pop it into the deepfreeze until needed. Ingredients: 4 Cups fresh rocket leaves ½ Cup parmesan cheese, nely grated 1 Lemon, juice and zest 4 Garlic cloves, crushed 1 Cup cashew nuts 1 Cup olive oil 1 Teaspoon salt
Method: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth (you might have to give it a stir now and then).

The fruits of our labour? Apple pie easy, plum crazy – talking tutti frutti! We are all tempted to pick a perfectly healthy fruit from our own tree, the sheer satisfaction cannot be had when buying it off the supermarket shelf. Can you blame Eve?

Oh, that apple! Before making the commitment, consider the following: Space and place All fruit trees require a sunny spot, very few will produce sufficiently with less than 6 hours sun per day. Most trees reach a height of between 3 – 5 meters and a crown with a width of approximately 3 meters. A good guideline for orchards would therefore be 7 meters between rows and 3 meters between trees. Also consider the winter temperatures in your area. Sub tropical varieties like citrus, avocado, mango, paw-paw and litchi to name but a few, are frost sensitive and will have to be protected during the colder months. Deciduous fruit trees can handle cold, sub zero temperatures very well. Take your pick from apples, pears, plums, apricots, peaches, quinces, pomegranates and grapes vines. Two of a kind, more than one kind, selfpollinating, requiring a pollinator? Ÿ Most fruit trees require pollination between two or more trees for fruit to set. Ÿ Pollination occurs when the trees blossom. Ÿ Pollen from the stamen (male part of the plant) has to be transferred to the stigma (female part of the plant). Completed pollination fertilizes the tree and fruit grows. Otherwise, flowers grow, but no fruit. Ÿ Pollination between trees can be performed by birds, wind or insects. The most common fruit tree pollinator is the honeybee that gathers nectar from the flowers. This zealous little insect can visit as many as 5,000 flowers in a single day – another lesson from nature! Ÿ More than one tree or more than one variety is therefore advisable. How do i plant my tree? Ÿ Bed size should be at least 1mx1m with a depth of 1m. Mix the soil dug out with ample compost and some coco peat. Ÿ Fill the hole back up to the right planting

depth (the size of the plant bag). Now mix in 500gr of Efekto's superphosphate (to establish healthy, strong roots), water the hole to allow air pockets to escape and help the phosphate so spread. After the water settled, add some more soil/compost mixture if the planting level is not correct. Remove the plant bag carefully, not disturbing the roots. If the roots appear too “bound”, rather soak the root ball in a bucket of water instead of trying to detangle them. Place tree in centre of hole and close up. Water again and then wait 5 – 6 days between watering for the first month. New growth should appear within 6 – 8 weeks, only then give the first application of Efekto's 3:1:5. Established fruit trees should be watered once a week during summer and once a month during winter.
Don't like protein with your fruit? There's always some extent of uncertainty as when to spray for fruit fly, codling moth and false codling moth (mostly citrus). Lots of tiny maggots inside fruit is the result of fruit fly whereas moth damage will have one nasty caterpillar eating its way out of the fruit, leaving excrement. Action should be taken as soon as the fruits are marble sized. Tissue is soft and easily penetrable. Fruit fly stings the fruit directly on the peel, the moth lays it's egg via the opening at the back. Most fruits are smooth and the product applied will simply run off. Use Efekto's G-49 or Insure wetting agent together with either Efekto's Malasol or Garden Ripcord. Very often trees will have fruit ready for spraying, but also blossoms that still have to fruit. Unfortunately bees will not come near blossoms sprayed with a chemical insecticide. It is much more practical and less labour intensive to do a coarse drop application with a brush against the main trunk and more solid branches by mixing the product with sugar. The insect is attracted by the sugar and then bites the dust. An environmentally friendly solution Fill a 5L plastic bucket halfway with water, add 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of vinegar and spoiled fruit. As the fermentation process
starts, the insects are lured and they sadly drown! Did you know? You can plant a seed of any fruit tree, it will most likely grow to be lovely and healthy, but no fruit? Most fruit trees aren't simply planted from seed, but are grafted. Rootstock is cloned from a mother rootstock and grown to a sapling. The rootstock tree is then topped and a branch from a proven variety of fruit is grafted to it. Some trees – apples, for example – produce seeds that result in trees nothing like the parent tree. If you have the world's most delicious apples, you can plant its seeds and have a good chance that it will produce, if any, hardly edible apples. Seeds from other species of grafted trees – cherries, peaches and pears – might produce offspring that are very close to the parent. But the parent in this case is the top half of the tree. The rootstock a tree is grafted to makes a big difference in size and hardiness of both the tree and the fruit. Thus a tree grown from seed might be genetically identical to the parent but still produce very different fruit if the parent is grafted and offspring isn't. Some of us might still remember the days when there was no such thing as a fibreless mango. Best way of eating them was in the pool or the bath and the kids used to make porcupines of them afterwards. Last, but not least Correct pruning of deciduous fruit trees for the first 2 years after planting is essential. If you are not too sure about handling this yourself, get professional advice from your local garden centre. Always remove any growth below the graft.
