Frail Care The intention is to provide care services in the house of people requiring such services for as long it is practical and possible. Let your pool work for you. Most of us installed a swimming pool because either the kids drove you mad and ensured you that your household was the only one in the neighbourhood without a pool and they absolutely need it to cool down and thereby getting better grades in the exams etc. So you got the pool…..Problem is, that a pool installed for cooling down only is a very expensive item and once the kids leave school, it may quickly turn into a “White elephant” In this month's edition I want to plant a small seed, to show you some of the options around to getting this chlorine eating white elephant to do it's bit for the household.

Persian Lamb Tagine I know this looks like a load of ingredients and a very involved process, but it's worth it. Absolutely delicious recipe and perfect for winter. Ingredients: 3kg lamb neck 5 tbsp olive oil or sunflower oil 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp hot chilli powder 1 tsp turmeric Large pinch of saffron 1 cinnamon sticks 1 preserved lemon (from a jar), drained and cut into thin wedges 300g ready-to-eat dried apricot 250g ready-to-eat dried pitted dates 100g shelled pistachios 2 tsp rose water 25g cornflour Small bunch coriander, leaves roughly chopped Cooked couscous or basmati rice, to serve

Method: Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Trim the lamb of any hard fat, cut into chunks and season all over. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and brown the lamb in 3-4 batches over a high heat for 1-2 mins until lightly coloured. Add 1 tbsp more oil between each batch and transfer to a bowl each time a batch is browned. Heat the remaining oil in the same dish over a medium heat and fry the onions for 5 mins or until softened and lightly coloured. Stir in the garlic, cumin, coriander, chilli powder, turmeric, 1 tsp ground black pepper and 1 tsp flaked sea salt. Cook for 1 min, stirring. Return the lamb to the dish and add 1.5 litres of water, the saffron, cinnamon and lemons. Bring to a simmer, stirring a few times. Cover with a lid and transfer to the oven. Cook for 1 hr. Carefully remove the dish from the oven and stir in the apricots, dates and half the pistachios, then cover once more and return to the oven. Cook for a further 30 mins or until the lamb is very tender. Transfer the dish to the stove top and adjust the seasoning to taste. Mix the cornflour with the rosewater and 3 tbsp cold water, then stir into the tagine. Cook over a medium heat for 1-2 mins or until the sauce thickens. When ready to serve, roughly chop the remaining nuts and sprinkle over the top. Garnish with coriander and serve with couscous or rice.

Cold out there... Nature turns a cold shoulder, that's inevitable, we have to experience cold to appreciate warmth. After a heartbreaking spell of drought, we were blessed with rain, this means an earlier start of a much colder winter, so be prepared!

below freezing, a strong wind can make a frost more damaging. Cold winds remove moisture from evergreen foliage more quickly than it can be replenished by the roots, this causes leaf browning particularly at the tips and margins.

Lend a helping hand ... Ÿ Insulate by using a mulch such as bark nuggets, this not only keeps the cold out in winter, but also the heat in summer and prevents evaporation. A thick layer of compost or old kraal manure will serve the same purpose, as a matter of fact, the soil will slowly be organically enriched, ready for the first application of fertilizer in August. Ÿ Watering should be minimized – metabolism has slowed down, sap flow is low, less water in the system will lower the risk of frost damage. Ÿ Areas with a high frost factor (Avis, Finkenstein, etc.,) – cover sensitive plants with frost sheeting. Frost cover can be left on for the entire winter, sufficient air and light is let through.

“Frost pockets” in your garden? Cold air naturally flows downwards on sloping ground, collecting at the lowest point or against a barrier. Avoid planting in such areas or select plants that are hardy and frost resistant. Personnel at your local garden centre might not always ask the necessary questions, bear in mind to inform them about your area so that they can recommend suitable plants. No matter how pretty a picture might be in a magazine, always consider and settle for what will work in your garden.

Ground frost occurs when the temperature of the ground falls below freezing point and air frost when the temperature of the air falls below freezing point. Plant cells can be damaged or even destroyed by frost. Repeated freezing and thawing or very rapid thawing (very common in Namibian zones) can be particularly damaging to plants. Once the temperature has fallen

Many plants are surprisingly resilient and may well rejuvenate from dormant buds at or below soil level. This takes time, so recovery may not be seen until early summer.
