THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT The role of an architect is quite as diverse and fascinating as their work. These professionals spearhead the process of creating unique, functional spaces developed from design concept to full realization. The Architect is typically the leader of various projects from undertakings as small as an addition to a home, to those as large as a hospital, campus, or an entire neighbourhood. He/she brings together the creative ideas and vision of the client and keeps in mind the needs of those that will be using the space whilst adhering to the governing standards of the industry. Having studied an average of five years to attain a Masters qualification, followed by a minimum of two years' work experience and a stringent board exam, an architect is in an ideal position to offer expert advice and guidance to minimise your risk and maximise your investment potential and return. Whilst the stigma exists that an architect is just too expensive, the opposite is true. The professional expertise, aesthetic design and encompassing knowledge of the trade and building economics provided when utilising an architect's services simply can't be matched by someone without this training. Just as one seeks out a highly experienced investment manager to invest your money, so too should one utilise an architect when investing in building property. It has been proven that even with the fees charged by an architect the client can still save money due to the cost-saving experience and time saving efficiency an architect offers. During the entire process, the architect will liaise with you, the client, in order to blend your requirements, the restrictions of your budget, the desired project timeline, legal and statutory requirements, building regulations and responses to site conditions with his/her knowledge of building technologies and materials and their creative touch to produce a building that combines sound construction, unique design and practical functionality. In negotiating the appointment of the architect, the client has the option of

utilising his/her services up to a point they decide. This does reduce the architects fee as less services are offered (as described below) but this comes with additional risks to the client once they depart from the architect's services and therefore it is usually recommended that they make use of an architect to get the project to the point where municipal approval is attained or alternatively through to the completion of construction on site. A host of additional services, such as feasibility studies, assistance with marketing and more can be provided by the architect, all of which is defined and set out in the client-architect agreement. The use of this contract between architect and clients as well as contractual documents between client and contractor, when combined with the architect's knowledge of construction law and regulations provides protection for the client, but also ensures that the architect has sufficient control and power as the client's agent to ensure that a quality building project is completed on time and within the budget. An architect's fee is governed by the Namibian Government through the NCAQS. A minimum fee scale has been set out by which a building's complexity is defined and according to the total cost of the proposed works a percentage fee is defined. For example: for a complex building, say an individual residence of approximately N$2, 000 000,00 the defined fee is 7.5% of the cost. This fee is then split across the five stages of progress within a construction project as follows (NOTE: The percentage split and work done in each phase varies slightly from office to office.): Ÿ 5 % of this is invoiced once the clients requirements and brief has been defined (Project Appraisal and Definition) Ÿ20% is invoiced once a sketch design of plans, sections and elevations as well as

perspective views are approved by the client (Design Concept) Ÿ20 % of the fee is invoiced once all municipal drawings have been completed, submitted and a municipal building permit has been approved (Design Development) Ÿ35 % is charged upon completion of technical drawings sufficient for securing a contractor and constructing the building (Technical Documentation) Ÿ20 % is charged for overseeing that the progress and quality of the works proceeds in accordance with the contract documents and drawings utilised (Contract Administration and Supervision). The architectural profession in Namibia is regulated by the Namibian Government through the Namibian Council for Architects and Quantity Surveyors (NCAQS). This body not only protects the public interest against unprofessional conduct but also establishes and defines the route to registration as a professional for any aspiring architect. Furthermore, the Namibia Institute of Architects (NIA) works in collaboration with the NCAQS to ensure sound practice and promote the architectural profession in Namibia. BOOSTING BANANA SUPERFOOD MUFFINS With the busy lives we all lead at the moment, we often forget to eat a breakfast. Bake a batch of these on the weekend, keep in a sealed container and you'll have a healthy breakfast-on-the-run, ready for those hectic weekday mornings! INGREDIENTS: 90g Butter, melted 225g Self-raising flour 70g Sticky brown sugar 40g Linseeds 40g Pumpkin seeds 40g Chia seeds Half teaspoon salt 120g Oat bran 2 Bananas, mashed Half cup plain yoghurt 2 eggs, lightly beaten with a fork 125g Blueberries

METHOD: Grease a 12 cup muffin pan Preheat oven to 180oC Combine seeds and split in half Combine self raising flour, sugar, salt, oat bran and half the seed mix In a separate bowl combine butter, banana, yoghurt and eggs Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and combine, being careful not to over mix the batter. Fold in blueberries. Spoon into muffin pans and sprinkle remaining half of the seeds on top. Bake in the center of the oven for 20-25 minutes

Slipping out of Hibernation... It's the month of August and a (not too cold) winter is fading into the background, we're ready to get things going in the garden, eagerly awaiting spring and the first balmy summer days. AUGUST TO DO LIST:

Lawns

Lawn roots become dormant when the soil temperature drops and sort of “curl” up for their winter sleep. Aerate lawns to help roots find their way again and for water and nutrients to be used optimally. Use a garden fork, pushing the prongs in about 7cm and wiggle slightly forwards and sideways, spacing approximately 5cm apart. Be careful not to punch holes in irrigation pipes! Lawn hair roots become old and damaged after a season or two. Apply Efekto's superphosphate to encourage the growth of new ones. Strong and healthy hair roots ensure that water and fertilizer are effectively used. Superphosphate is static and cannot be applied as a top dressing. Make holes of 10cm as required all over the lawn with the back of a broomstick, or anything similar, fill halfway with superphosphate. These will be closed up when you now apply a layer of compost or old kraal manure. Your first application of a follow up fertilizer at monthly intervals will start beginning of August until end of April. Efekto's 7:1:3 Lawn and Leaf is an excellent product. Mole Cricket nymphs are already plentiful, lurking down below, progressing towards adulthood. Mature mole crickets, if you have a close look, are “armoured” and extremely, if not impossible”, to control with any insecticide. Now is the time to do a soil drench to destroy, or at least, minimize populations. Use Efekto's Plant Protector.

Roses

If you forgot to apply Efekto's Insecticide Granules Plus after pruning in July, you can still do it now together with you first 60gr per plant application of Efekto's 8:1:5.

Plants

Protect your perennial bulbous plants – your beloved Agapanthus, Arum Lilies, Clivias, Amaryllis, etc. As we are not a cold winter area larval

activity starts as early as August. Lily borers, Arum hawk moths, and Amaryllis borer deposit their eggs in the crown of the plant. As the larvae develop and feed on the plant material, they cause havoc. Spray with Efekto's Cypermethrin which is now available in 50ml bottles. It replaced Efekto's Garden Ripcord which had cypermethrin as active ingredient, but in a much weaker formulation. The same product can be used to protect Geraniums and Pelagorniums against borer beetle larvae.

Fruit Trees

Trees were pruned / cut back in July and a thick layer of organic material applied. Now the first application of 3:1:5 should be given, perfectly balanced with not too much nitrogen, but sufficient potassium for flower and fruit forming. A perfect companion plant to deter fruit fly and minimize, or even eliminate the use of insecticides, is rue (wynruit), a very hardy, waterwise perennial of medium size. As a matter of fact, hardly any insect likes rue, so plant a few to keep your entire garden healthy and your fruit maggot- and worm free.

Summer Veggies

New areas for summer veggies and flower seedlings should now be prepared for seeding or transplanting. Remove old plants, replenish organic matter by adding sufficient compost and coco peat. Work in some of Efekto's 2:3:2 for veggies or 3:1:5 for flowers together with Efekto's Vitaboost Organic fertilizer which is now in a coarser format, not longer a pellet, which makes if available faster to plants. Cutworm will prevent you from enjoying the fruits of your labour. As they overwinter in the soil mainly as caterpillars spring is exactly the time they become active. When flower or vegetable seedlings are about 4cm high, cutworms feed on the young leafs, but cause damage by cutting through the stems. Being nocturnal feeders they surface at night, so sprinkle Efekto's Cutworm Bait around seedlings as late as possible in the afternoon so that the active ingredient will still be strong when they start feasting. Weeds that were not removed would have set seed by now. Get rid of them before
