finder As we are nearing the end of the year fast, we definitely feel the summer sun burn down on us when we leave the protection of a building. Luckily, some rainy weather started to build up and gave us a few needed showers. Protect your Home while you are on holiday. When you leave your home, whether for a quick weekend getaway or a longer holiday, you'll want to take some basic safety precautions to keep your house and belongings as safe as you can. This makes most of us think about burglar proofing, but preparations extend beyond locking your doors or setting timers for your lights. 1. Create the Illusion that someone's home Beyond setting your lights on a timer, you can also set the television and radio on a timer to create the typical noise and flickering lights of an average family home at night. But wait, that's not all! Arrange for someone to mow at least once a week. If you normally leave toys outside, or keep a hose unrolled, or do anything that shows signs of a home being lived in, don't tidy up too much before you leave.

Trees and your pool Trees are one of the greatest gifts of Nature. In our hot country many a person enjoys them for the shade they provide. Just as human beings and animals, trees also need water. In a hot country like Namibia, where water is a scarcity you cannot blame the roots of the trees to do their utmost best to find moist. The slightest wet spot from a pool skimmer box not sealing properly, or water seeping through interlocks around the pool will inspire the roots to work their way to the pool. Problem is that the damage to the pool and surrounding area normally takes place over a longer period. It is thus important to look for early warnings of possible pool leaks causing trees to flourish and there by encouraging the roots to grow towards the pool and later on damage it.

Tips to make sure trees and pools do not get to “closely acquainted”. Ÿ If you have lawn around the pool and one particular part keeps on being greener than the rest, chances are good that there is a leak on one side of the pool. Ÿ If the paving or tiles around the pool develops cracks, do not take it for granted….. It might be the roots from a nearby tree, working their way to the pool, and the pool is actually leaking. Ÿ Do regular level check on the pool water Ÿ If you cover the pool in the evening you should virtually have no water drop to the next morning. If the water does drop you might have a potential leak. Ÿ Emptying a swimming pool and letting it stand dry or at a low water level for a long period in time is not recommended at all. Ÿ During times when the pool is standing empty the sun heats up the skimmer box and pool shell. Ÿ This causes all sorts of structural movement. Ÿ As soon as it's filled, months later small leaks may start. This is exactly what the roots are looking for. WELL HIDDEN It's always a bit puzzling, not to stay disappointing, when a beloved tree or plant shows signs of decline, but no pests are obvious. A few months ago we discussed the Red Palm Weevil, also a critter that can cause extensive damage before any signs of doom appear on the horizon, as it does its destructive work from the inside of the plant. This month we have the Fig tree borer, aka Phryneta spinator. As can be derived from the name, the common fig, Ficus carica, is the most preferred host plant. This large beetle is indigenous to South Africa and has become a serious pest of fig trees in Cape Town. Alas it also rears its ugly head in Namibian areas from time to time. Larvae bore in the wood and in severe cases can actually kill the tree, especially if its old and lacking in vigour. The insect's appearance makes it easily recognisable: large size, long antennae, mottled appearance and prominent spines on each of the thorax (mid-section of the body) – not exactly endearing? Unlike most other insects, it has a very long life cycle, slightly over three years! Each egg is laid in summer, from mid-November through to mid-March, in a T-shaped slit made by the female near the base of a branch. As these insects are not usually nocturnal, egg laying seems to only occur during the day. Unfortunately, they blend in well with colouring of the branches and are not easily spotted unless trees are closely inspected during the period. Eggs take 10 – 8 days to develop. At first the hatched larva feeds on the bark and later enters the wood, chewing its way through, forming tunnels in the process. Naturally, this diet of wood is not very nutritious so it needs to eat a lot of wood in order to grow. Larvae are cannibalistic and therefore

tend to space themselves out in the wood, avoiding contact with larvae in other tunnels. THE TELL TALE SIGNS As it burrows through the wood the larva packs excrement ('frass') and castings behind it and pushes some of it through small holes in the bark. Often small heaps of reddish wood fragments can be found at the base of the tree. Obviously one is not always looking for small holes, let alone fragments, and the damage can be far gone by the time one does. Fragments also get washed away when watering the tree. When Fully grown, the larvae tunnel to just beneath the bark where they moult into a pupa, making an easy exit when they emerge as adults. The tunnel leading from the pupation chamber is blocked with frass and wood chips. Pupal development period lasts 80 – 100 days. When emerging as an adult, the female needs to mate with a male and find suitable sites on host plants to lay her eggs. CONTROL – When noticing tiny entry holes on branches, spray hard into them with Efekto's Cypermethrin. Repeat at last three times with a seven day interval. Burrows can be easily located by the presence of course sawdust-like material that was thrown out, or by the absence of such material, the broken or sunken condition of the bark. Insert only the point of a sharp knife, making vertical slits, avoiding cross cuts, to dig out the larvae. The reason for vertical slits is that a callous readily forms of the side of such slits. In time, if no further injury is caused, new tissue covers the wound. After locating the larva, it can either be destroyed by means of a knife or by inserting a strong flexible piece of wire into the burrow.
