EDITORIAL The Hajj and Eid al-Adha 2013

The Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam and one of the largest religious pilgrimages in the world, is currently taking place in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Starting last Friday and continuing through Wednesday, some 3 million Muslims from around the globe are participating in several rituals, including the Tawaf -- the circumambulation of the Kaaba, the enormous cube-shaped building in the center of the Masjid al-Haram mosque. The pilgrims are are also taking part in the Sa’i, traveling back and forth between the mountains of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, and Ramy al-Jamarat, in which they throw pebbles at three walls in the city of Mina to show their defiance of the Devil. Directly after the Hajj, Muslims all over the world will observe Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice. The feast honors Abraham who, according to Muslim tradition, was prepared to sacrifice his son Ishmael before God sent a ram in his place. To commemorate this event, worshippers sacrifice sheep, cows, and camels, and share the meat among family, neighbors, and the needy. Collected here are scenes of this year’s Hajj and Eid al-Adha, from Mecca and around the globe. Jawaid riaz

Turkey visit

NEWS Nawaz visited a low-cost housing scheme in Ankara and met with investors in the housing sector, also mentioning potential assistance in this area three times in his interactions with the media. It is to the prime minister’s credit that he is using these trips not just to shore up our alliances with important powers but also to sign the kind of economic agreements that are sorely needed to spur economic activity back home.

Nawaz

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Turkey can be seen as a success both in the security and economic realms as the two countries agreed to intensify their cooperation in various sectors. On the issue of militancy and radicalisation, Pakistan sought help from Turkey particularly in the field of cybercrime.

Turkey, as a regional power, also has particular interest in Afghanistan once US troops pull out next year and so will be relieved to know that the PML-N government seems to be less committed to the idea of ‘strategic depth’ than previous governments and is more interested in maintaining better ties with the Afghans.

Leading businessmen from Pakistan also attended the forum to explore mutually beneficial entrepreneurial opportunities. Turkey and Pakistan have had a history of positive cooperation. In 2005, Turkey’s housing development administration assisted in the construction of 5,000 homes in earthquake-affected areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Turkish companies are becoming increasingly active in Pakistan’s energy sector as well and in 2009, Turkish firms built Pakistan’s first wind turbines.

Talks with Taliban deemed not to move forward: Nawaz

The PM was speaking to the Pakistani media in London as he arrived here for a brief overnight stay on his way to the USA. When asked by ‘The News’ about the relentless attacks by militant groups and the government’s intention to start whathave been termed ‘peace talks’ with the Taliban, Sharif explained that the All Parties Conference (APC) was called with sincere intentions and “all the decisions made there were based on sincerity and the whole nation was represented in the decisions that were made.” Nawaz defended the APC’s decision to speak to the militants but looked frustrated at the total disregard shown by them to his offer. He said that the killing of innocent Christians had plunged the whole nation into grief. “It’s a national tragedy. No sane person can condone such barbarism. Everyone, no matter what his religion or creed is, will feel sad over this. This is the work of the enemies of Pakistan.” He said that terrorists had no religion and were targeting innocent people and this was against the teachings of Islam and all religions.

When asked if the government would now start an offensive against the militant groups, Nawaz Sharif was evasive about what would happen next when there was little hope left that political dialogue would result in anything. The militant groups seemed to be in an aggressive mood, believing LONDON: Prime Minister Nawaz that the government was in a deSharif said that the behaviour and fensive mood. actions of the militants did not augur well for any kind of peace talks Nawaz Sharif said that he would as the government’s efforts for a hold talks with heads of states in dialogue with the Taliban were the US, including several ministers now deemed not to be moving for- from all over the world. “Pakistan ward despite the fact that the gov- has a solid point of view on many ernment had been very sincere in issues and we will raise them in the General Assembly. How wonderful it is that a democratic government has taken over from another and the transfer of power has been through the power of the ballot. It was all cordial and we have set a democratic example by sitting together with all political stakeholders as seen recently, including during the presidential takeover ceremony,” he said in reference to the tribute he paid to former president Asif Ali Zardari and vice versa. When asked by ‘The Media’ what would happen to accountability, Nawaz Sharif said that accountability as a process would continue. “The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is there to do its job and it’s the function of NAB to do so. We believe that democracy should function and deliver. We want to play our role to strengthen democratic values and we should meet the expectations of our people.” Nawaz Sharif announced that he would ensure that legislation was brought in for the rights of overseas Pakistanis and their rights were protected accordingly. “I love the overseas Pakistanis and the whole nation loves them. They are patriots, whether they carry Pakistani passports or otherwise. Their hearts beat with Pakistan.”

minister bombings condemns toll hits 81; over 145 ‘gutless act’ injured

“We carried out the suicide bombings at Peshawar church and will continue to strike foreigners and non-Muslims until drone attacks stop,” Ahmad Marwat, a spokesman for the group, told AFP by telephone. In June, the group claimed responsibility for killing 10 foreign climbers at a base camp of Nanga Parbat, the second highest mountain in Pakistan after K-2. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the “cruel” attack, saying it violated the tenets of Islam. Pope Francis also spoke out against the violence, calling it “a bad choice of hatred and war”.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also telephoned the Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to express his condolences over the loss of lives and to discuss the likely response to such an attack.

When asked by ‘The Media’ whether overseas Pakistanis would be allowed to stand for Pakistan’s public offices, Nawaz Sharif said that the decision on this issue would be taken by parliament but “I personally feel that they should not be discriminated against and should not be given the proverbial step-motherly treatment. We must remember that they love Pakistan and it’s important.”

The minister expressed solidarity with the army on behalf of the government and paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of Army for the defence of the country.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Begum Kulsoom Nawaz were received at London’s Heathrow Airport by Pakistan’s envoy to the UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak condemned the incident as well. He conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and declared the incident a great loss to the country.

AFP adds: The two attackers struck at the end of a service at All Saints Church in Peshawar, the main town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has borne the brunt of a bloody extremist insurgency in recent years.

Sahibzada Anees, one of Peshawar’s most senior officials, told reporters the bombers struck when the service had just ended. “We are in an area which is a target of terrorism and within that area there was a special security arrangement for the church. We are in a rescue phase and once it is over we will investigate what went wrong,” Anees said. Former minister for inter-faith harmony Paul Bhatti and provincial lawmaker Fredrich Azeem Ghauri both said the attack was the deadliest ever targeting Christians in Pakistan. The small and largely impoverished Christian community suffers discrimination in the overwhelmingly Muslim-majority nation but bombings against them are extremely rare. Schoolteacher Nazir Khan, 50, said at least 400 worshippers were greeting each other after the service when there was a huge explosion.

Pakistan’s umbrella Taliban movement claimed responsibility, saying it had set up a new faction, Junood ul-Hifsa, to kill foreigners to avenge US drone strikes on Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives.

Pages of a Bible were scattered near the altar and rice meals mingled with dust on the floor amid shattered benches. Walls were gouged with ball bearings used in the explosives, he said.

6 September - 2013 Grieving relatives blocked the main Grand Trunk Road highway with bodies of the victims to protest against the killings, an AFP reporter said. Christians in Karachi, Lahore, Multan and other cities also staged protest rallies to condemn the attacks and demand state protection for their lives and properties, AFP reporters said. In the southern port city of Karachi angry protesters clashed with police when they tried to clear a road in Isa Nagri, a low-income Christian neighbourhood. Pakistan’s Ulema Council, an association of leading Muslim scholars, branded the attack as “shameful”. Sectarian violence between majority Sunni and minority Shiite Muslims is on the rise in Pakistan but Sunday’s bombings will fuel fears the already beleaguered Christian community, could be increasingly targeted.

Ignoring US sanctions, Russia offers to build Pak-Iran gas pipeline

ISLAMABAD: Russia is ready to execute the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project, ignoring the US sanctions on Iran, a Russian minister has revealed in a meeting with Pakistan’s petroleum minister in Islamabad. This will be done in view of the new Russian policy to look towards South Asia.To this effect, Gazprom, a state-owned Russian company or one of its subsidiaries will soon make a formal contact with the Government of Pakistan to execute the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project. This message has been clearly conveyed by a Russian delegation led by Yury Sentyurin, Deputy Minister of Energy, at a meeting with the Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, here on Wednesday, a top official who was part of the meeting told The Media. The Russians have also decided to play a role in accomplishing the TAPI gas line project and want to become part of a consortium which is to execute the project. Apart from it, Moscow has also clearly indicated to Islamabad that it wants the electricity trade project (CASA-1,000) to be extended to Russia as it is rich in electricity and is currently exporting power to Mongolia, China and Europe.

NEWS Russian delegation also offered its services to install power projects based on the lignite coal of Thar.

Official sources told this news agency here on Wednesday that Afghan security forces opened indiscriminate fire on the Pakistani area of Qamaruddin Karez in Zhob district from Afghanistan that resulted in the killing of five Pakistani nationals and caused injuries to three others, a Levies Force soldier among them.

The serious concern of the Government of Pakistan was conveyed to the Afghan government. The Afghan government was asked to hold an inquiry into the incident, adhere to the border coordination and cooperation mechanisms, and prevent the recurrence of such incidents, which are detrimental to the friendly relations and undermine goodwill between the two brotherly countries. Meanwhile, two persons including a member of the Hazara community, were gunned down in the Double Road area of Quetta. Iran will not build nuclear weapons, says Rouhani

WASHINGTON: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that his government won’t build any nuclear weapons, as speculation grew here that President Barack Obama may hold direct talks with the new Iranian leader on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. In an interview in Tehran with NBC News, a leading American television network, Rouhani, who has struck a moderate tone, reiterated Iran’s stance that “under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever.” “We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb, and we are not going to do so,” he said. “We solely are looking for peaceful nuclear technology.” “In its nuclear program, this government enters with full power and has complete authority,” Rouhani said.“The problem won’t be from our side. We have sufficient political latitude to solve this problem.” Both and Obama will address the General Assembly in New York on September 24th. White House officials said Obama currently has no planned meeting with President Rouhani. But the two sides have communicated ahead of what diplomats could be the first face-to-face interaction

Malala Yousafzai receive top Amnesty award in Dublin

DUBLIN: Pakistani education rights activist, Malala Yousafzai, who was shot and almost killed by the Taliban, received an Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience award tonight in Dublin.

“They are not accepted as human beings but are neglected and marginalised. Women are deprived of their basic right of equality and freedom and justice,” she said. “I know that every time a person comes, delivers a speech, the audience claps and that is the end of it. Dear brothers and sisters, I’m not here to explain the issues that we are faced with. Rather we are here to find a solution to these problems. “You may be asking yourselves ‘what is the solution?’ What is the solution? I believe the only solution is education. Education. Education.” Earlier speakers reminded the audience that Malala was just 11 years old when she began to write a blog for the BBC’s Urdu language service in which she campaigned for women’s rights and the the right of girls to go to school. Her views cast her against the Taliban, the Islamic fundamentalist group active in neighbouring Afghanistan and also trying to exert control in the Swat Valley of northwest Pakistan where she lived. In October 2012 while returning home on a school bus, gunmen boarded the vehicle, singled Malala out and shot her in the head and neck. Remarkably, she survived and, transferred to hospital in England, made a remarkable recovery.

In a short speech to a Mansion House Round Room packed with human rights campaigners, rock star royalty and society glitterati, she had the rapt attention of her audience as she spoke in a careful and deliberate manner, delivering a clarion call for education as the route to freedom.

She received her award tonight from Bono who spoke of her “once in a century kind of courage”. Another speaker, the Iranian-born American writer and academic, Azar Nafisi, made a connection between Seamus Heaney, a strong presence throughout the ceremony, and Malala - “they both belong to imagination and to the “I want to live in a world where free, republic of conscience,” she said. compulsory education is available everywhere to every child,” she The same award honour was besaid, adding “and, let no one be stowed also on Harry Belafonforgotten.” te, the US singer and civil rights campaigner, “a warrior for human Her head covered by a colourful shawl, the now 16-year-old cut a rights,” said Orla Guerin, the Irishstriking figure as she stood alone born BBC journalist based in Pakion the stage, speaking slowly and stan who orchestrated proceedclearly with a mixture of confi- ings. dence and iron passion.

Investigations stalled: Headless NAB stands paralysed

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the country’s top anti-graft watchdog, has almost become dysfunctional after the Supreme Court dismissed the then NAB chairman, Fasih Bokhari, through its May 28 judgment. In the absence of a chairman, most of NAB’s affairs have been halted, as inquiries and investigations are suffering due to an acute shortage of prosecutors and experts. According to the law and justice ministry, the NAB deputy chairman cannot approve contractual extensions of lawyers and prosecutors, documents available with The Express Tribune revealed. Furthermore, under the current circumstances NAB cannot file any new reference(s) before the respective accountability court, while no new inquiry and investigation can be authorised or closed in the absence of a NAB chairman. I’m not the greatest player: Serena

BEIJING: Serena Williams said yesterday she was not the greatest ever women’s tennis player after securing the year-end world number one ranking for the third time in her glittering career. But the 32-year-old American power-hitter, now on a career total of 55 titles with 17 major wins, told reporters in Beijing ahead of the China Open that she was ‘maybe top five’. Serena achieved the feat in 2002 and 2009, and joins Justine Henin and Martina Hingis as a three-time year-end number one, with only Steffi Graf (8), Martina Navratilova (7), Chris Evert (5) and Lindsay Davenport (4) ahead of her. “I’m not the greatest player,” said Serena. “I’m still playing and I’m still trying to reach records. And people like Steffi and Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova and Margaret Court, they are the greatest,” she said. “Maybe top five, but definitely not number one. For me it’s an honour to even be mentioned amongst those amazing ladies.” Serena also became the first woman to surpass $9 million in prize money in a single season, pushing her career earnings past $50 million. She is the top seed in the $5,185,625 China Open, while home favourite Li Na is seeded fourth. 31-year-old Li also received a boost with the news that she has become the fifth player to qualify for the $6 million end-of-season WTA Championships. Serena, along with Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska – the world numbers one, two, three and four – have already qualified for the WTA Championships.

Zinda Bhaag: This Deserves An Oscar Nod

character is refreshing, it has hardly any contribution to the narrative. She doesn’t serve the purpose of eye candy, nor is she a good actor. More than that, her dialogue delivery is monotonous and she has a limited range of expressions on screen. Shoots and the ramp, it seems, are better places for Amna. All in all, Zinda Bhaag stylistically highlights one of the most central social issues faced by Pakistan-

is — the issue of survival. Those who can run away will, but only after accumulating adequate resources. Others dream of running away, even if it means putting all their resources at stake. Verdict: Zinda Bhaag is a must watch. In its modest, yet ingenious approach towards storytelling, Zinda Bhaag easily becomes the best film to have come out of modern day Pakistani cinema.

Pakistan Ready To Get Its First Singing Idol

I

n one scene of the film, an illegal ‘immigration expert’ is surgically recreating a passport for a man who is desperate to get out. He meticulously uses tweezers to peel off one passport picture and then replaces it with another. His hands are steady; after all, the consequences of getting caught are too frightening. This single act encapsulates the theme of Zinda Bhaag — a depiction of the essence of the ‘Pakistani dream’ as we know it today.

In the heart of a lower-middle class neighbourhood in Lahore, friends Khaldi (Khurram Patras), Taambi (Zohib) and Chitta (Salman Ahmed Khan) are living life to the fullest; they eat, drink and make merry. They look for love, get their hearts broken, and tease each other like any tightly-knit group of old friends would. Naseerudin Shah as Pehlvan is less of the mohalla’s ‘social worker’, and more the Godfather figure. He is introduced to us when he walks into the funeral of Booba, one of the residents of the area, who had managed to escape to France by hiding in a container. He eventually started his own restaurant called La Booba, so he became an inspiration to youngsters in the mohalla. The scene shows the obsession the residents of the neighbourhood have with finding success in foreign lands. In Zinda Bhaag, the film’s directors Meenu Gaur and Farjad Nabi manage to create a culturally accurate story world, while taking a limited amount of screen time. The naturally raw Lahori accent; the corny humour; a family’s obsession with Urdu soaps and the yearning of the boys to make an appearance at a funeral just to get a taste of free mutton qorma are examples of an apt cultural representation that Pakistani films fail to achieve. A pleasant combination of traditional cinema shots and snappy cinematography captures

provide them with the opportunity to showcase their hidden talent,” he said.

both, the soul of Lahore and the essence of a neorealist saga. The visuals are supported by a light hearted yet unsettling story with back to back powerful one-liners that keep you glued to your seats and leave you craving for more. Shah as Pehlvan has a largerthan-life persona, but also relates the ghosts of his past. Despite donning funky pink kurtas and wearing multi-coloured rings, there is a menacing darkness to Pehlvan, without whose blessings, it seems you cannot make it big in the mohalla. His proficiency in Punjabi is as immaculate as his fluency in Urdu. Khaldi, Taambi and Chitta are newcomers turned method actors. Their comfort in the atmosphere created by ZB plays a seminal role in making them believable. Bringing in nonactors was a smart choice, and an even smarter one to edit their shots well-enough to prevent their naivety from being translated on screen. That shouldn’t, however, take away from the well-performed long takes. Editing is the backbone of any film but very few (especially in Pakistan) have used it effectively, and it’s the clever cutting of the shots, along with tight pacing that keeps the audience of ZB wanting more. The songs are good, but they sometimes become a needless deviation from a very precise plot, preventing Zinda Bhaag from being considered perfect. One wonders whether the powerful words penned by Mohammad Hanif in Dekhainge deserved something better than a half-hearted retaliation and a whole-hearted celebratory dance by a bunch of socially suppressed waiters.

“From among them, the people will choose one voice that will reign in our hearts.”

slamabad As a Mirror of Integral structure of evolving consciousness, Akhtar Raza Saleemi’s collection of poetry ‘Khawab Daan’ marks his poetic moments of truth lived in the present and yet extended into a temporal existence outside of linear time and space. Touching on facets of space and time, Saleemi’s poems belong to the realm of the lofty and mythical. After grooming himself successfully as apoet of ‘ghazals’, Saleemi ventures into the world of versified poetry in ‘Khawab Daan’, seeking to revel in his poetic liaison to a larger consciousness, embracing the order of things from small to great and how they are interrelated, sharing a oneness with the nature and human existence. Saleemi’s verses paint portraits of individuals at a certain point in time representing the poets own varied experience over a span of time, yet the same themes run through all of them in a mystic connection. Going through Saleemi’s moments of truth, as intricate as the sound properties of poetry may be, it is difficult to imagine a poet more straight- forward and unadorned in modes of address.
