RIBERAS DEL HABITAR VALDIVIANO- 2015 VALDIVIA, CHILE This workshop was a colaboration between the School of Architecture of Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Brazil) and the Austral University (Chile). The area to be studied was Las Animas, located at the north of the city. This area presents some geographic limitations because of the rivers Cau-Cau, Calle-Calle and the wetlands, but also concentrate industries due to the north-south road and once used to have a urban beach. Besides that, the area has some problems because of the lack of infrastructure and connections to the other parts of the city. As a challenge, the teams should design a urban plan by using different groups of strategies. This team in specific should work with urban and social strategies.

URBAN SKETCHES ATELIER- 2014 SAO PAULO, BRASIL This workshop was an invitation from the Municipality of Sao Paulo to various Schools of Architecture in the city, including one of the most traditional: the School of Architecture of Mackenzie Presbyterian University. The students, were free to choose any area in Sao Paulo that would change with the New Master Plan proposed in 2014. This project was an experiment and critic to an iconic and full of issues sector: the surrounding areas of the Elevado Costa e Silva, also known as Minhocao. It is an elevated expressway, with 3.4km long, built in 1970’s. One of the biggest polemics of this construction is the demolition or maintenance of it due to its influence in the city. The surrounding areas are undervalued and also dangerous at night. There were two teams working on the same area. One was proposing the removal of the Elevado, and the other, was working with the maintenance of it. This is the result of the second group, that choosed to create 4 different thematic areas: one focused in culture, others in housing (but with distinct focuses such as housing for the third age, for students and for handcaped) and medical incubators (hospitals, schools and research laboratories linked to it) as a network, bringing life to te area.

VALPARAISO, LAS CAÑAS- 2014 VALPARAÍSO, CHILE This workshop was a colaboration between the School of Architecture of Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Brazil) and the Universidad del Desarollo (Chile). In 2014, there was several fires in Valparaíso, destroying part of the area considered as a World Heritage by Unesco. As a challege, students of both universities should propose a project that would help improve the area in case of any other disaster, considering the adversities of the site due to the topography, lack of roads for emergency cars and the dumping ground at the bottom of Las Cañas. This group created a net of towers that would be icons in the skyline of the city, helping in case of fire and also being a new touristic reference. By bringing a better tourism infrastructure, part of the local population can stay in the area since the jobs come from the port and other neighborhoods.

PARAISOPOLIS- 2014 SAO PAULO, BRAZIL One of the first strategies workshops made in the School of Architecture of Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Brazil). Paraisopolis is one of the largest slums in Sao Paulo, located at the south of the city. It is where the famous picture of poverty x rich separated by a wall was taken. Paraisopolis, like any other slum, is an illegal appropriation of land. This one happened in the 1920’s by workers who worked close to the area and couldn’t afford to rent a house in the middle of the city. As the years went by, this informal city remained and grew more and more. In this workshop, students were encouraged to think some possibilities to make this “parallel city” grow and have more independence, but respecting its caracteristics like compact spaces, quick self-construction, sense of community and freedom of mobility. This group proposed a creation of bridges and elevated areas with commerce, observatories and green roofs that would help the economy and tourism in the area.

M.A.S.H -Pad - Habitat for Healing - 2015 SIERRA LEONE Due to the alarming numbers of the deaths by ebola in 2014, the Habitat for Healing (Student lead Non-Profit Organization comprised of Architecture and Medical students of New York Institute of Technology) challenged students and professionals to create an effective system that will serve as an environment of healing, protection for the general public in the event of a rapidly escalating epidemic or pandemic situation. They should also creatively crowd source ideas for mobile architecture for strategic healing to be utilized to address future epidemic and pandemic issues; create a guide book for typologies used in response to disease spread prevention and apply some of the ideas in areas where they are most needed. This project is composed by giant air bubbles. The main characteristcs of it are the quick construction, mobility, is adaptable to any terrain and also sustainable. It has independent energy, air, water and waste systems, that makes the project really effective for emergencies and future outbreakings.

CAMBODIA - ELEVEN MAGAZINE - 2015 TONLE SAP LAKE, CAMBODIA Tonle Sap is an important lake in Cambodia, with many communities around it. These villages use the lake for subsistence, such as fishing, cokking and showering, but also use it as waste disposal; wich brings health issues, bringing diseases to the villagers. The aim of the competition was to design a structure, or series of structures, with the Tonle Sap Lake, whom need to be transient so that they can move freely around the water and service the floating villages. the structure(s) is intended to embody three primary roles, which were healthcare, research and education. This proposal, compesed by floating structures, has a boat that would sail along the river in one direction and smaller boats that would sail, bringing people from the villages to the main boats. All this floating structures could be built in the villages, generating jobs. They are made of bamboo with metallic joints and fabric, with a design that remembers the Cambodian palaces. There are two types of big boats: the schools and the research labs with the medical care. They also count with a system that helps cleaning the lake and collects samples for research purposes. All of this is a solution that tries to make it sustainable as possible.

PIRACICABA’S OBSERVATORY - 2014 PIRACICABA BRAZIL Promoted by the IAB (Institute of the Architects of Brazil), this project shoud revitalize an area of the city of Piracicaba. This area actually is a park, with no infrastructure, close to the river Piracicaba. Having this park and also the river as visual references, the participants should propose a design for the park with observatories. Using flows, urban recycle and continuity, this proposal has unique buildings that are interconnected and reveals the city by the towers with observatories. The architecture acts as a mark in the park. To smooth the sloping ground and highlight the architecture, the landscape plan presents a geometrical design and native plants.

PATHS ALONG THE RIBEIRA RIVER - 2015 BACHELORS THESIS - IGUAPE, BRAZIL For the bachelor’s thesis, the students should choose a place and a building program of their own choice. In this case, the city of Iguape, located on the south coast of Sao Paulo state, was chosen. It is a small city with a little more than 30000 habitants. Besides the size of the city, once it used to be an important city to Brazil’s early economic development. Due to the presence of a river and the construction of a riverway in early 1830’s, the city started to concentrate the exportation of Brazilian rice and other commodities. With the presence of a port in the city, some companies such as the Matarazzo Industries and naval factories came to the city. Unfortunately, due to the silt of the riverway, the port was soon closed. That made the industries close and go to Santos, where unti today works the biggest Brazilian port. After the closing of the riverway, the economy of the city was based on agriculture, fishing and historical tourism. With all the potential the city presented, this thesis had the intention to bring back some glamour to Iguape and also create a new future scenario to this unique place. To make this possible, a plan was designed and divided in 3 phases: - 1: Revitalization of the facilities of the old Matarazzo Industries, turning them into a tourist information center and a rowing school - 2: Construction of a nautical school, a theater to support the school and city events and a museum to the naval history of the city. - 3: Creation of a new open public space simillar to the Patio Bellavista in Santiago and redesign of the borders as an interconnection between waters, green areas and citycreation of a floating green park and a pool complex With the implementation of this ideas, the city would have the appropriate support to sports, education and leisure, atracting not only tourists but also students, professors, researches; turning the city active and atractive again.

PARI WATERS COMPLEX - METRO STATION - 2014 STUDIO PROJECT 08 - PARI, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL During the 4th year of Architecture, the main focus of the studio project is the context of the project. That way, the students are challenged to analize a part of the city and after designing a master plan, they can propose a building project along the Rubi / Coral railway. The studied area is a neighboor called Pari, located in the east-center of Sao Paulo, close to the Tamanduatei river. The biggest problems of this place is the lack of infrastructure and presence of a informal market in a gigantic open space. Besides that, the area has a good location, close to the municipal market and cereal sheds. The group proposal was to create a series of “wetlands to help contain and slow down the rainwaters and also a serie of educational buildings connected to experimental labs like markets, restaurants and sportive areas. This project included opening a station, once the glebe is crossed by the railway, and a faculty of economy and administration.

LUZ COMPLEX - CONTAINER HOUSING- 2013 STUDIO PROJECT 07 - LUZ, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL During the 4th year of Architecture, the main focus of the studio project is the context of the project. That way, the students are challenged to analize a part of the city and after designing a master plan, they can propose a building project. The studied area is a neighboor called Luz, located in the center of Sao Paulo. The biggest problems of this place is the old infrastructure, high criminallity and drug users rate/ incidence in the area. Besides that, the area has important cultural buildings, including theathers, museums and parks, and infrastructure such as train and metro. The group proposal was basically to increase the public green areas, the transportation systems and create a technological pole. The individual project should be a part of the masterplan. This project was a conceptual residential building of quick construction, using a crane and containers. Each container could be a unit or a part of one, that can be organized according to the customer’s need. The crane is responsible for placing the units in the building. IMPORTANT NOTE: This project was made before the knowledge of the project of a conceptual hotel with a crane and containers in Hong Kong.

THE SWARM - FLOATING SETTLEMENT - 2016 STUDIO PROJECT - HONG KONG The first experience in the Master Design programme in Hong Kong. The look for a sustainable, quick and easy construction housing experimentation in the middle of the sea. Why the sea? It is a no one land. The most suitable place to receive refugees and people in need. Also, maybe it can be the answer to the overflowing population. The swarm is n experimentation that brings almost complete independence of the land, a starting of domestication of the sea. Its is a versitile and flexible solution, combining the possibility of many arrangements and the reuse of materials such as containers, gallons and bamboo.
