We’ve published an insightful editorial piece written by Perfect Fit Brand CEO, Steve Callow, who identifies the origins and influencers of the current popular gay Pride movement and the critical role those identified as homosexuals played and continue to do so, in carving out the human rights, tolerances, societal and legal changes that we take for granted today.

Synergy’s Mia More spent time (pre-covid) in New York and penned this wonderful expose on New York City’s Museum of Sex which opened in October 2002. It was founded by software millionaire Daniel Gluck, whose aim was to build a cultural institution akin to a ‘Smithsonian of Sex’. Mia spoke to Kit Richardson, Buyer and Merchandiser of the MoSex store, who told us about her role and the store in general.

Julia Margo and Adam Lewis started a passion project with a desire to create sex toys that would blow people’s minds and make pleasure better for everyone. Employees at global sexual wellness brand Lovehoney are sporting an attention-grabbing new look to raise awareness of Mental Health.

Sustainability at ORION trade news

As a responsible company in Flensburg, ORION has been fulfilling numerous social and economic aspects of sustainability for years. However, ORION has also made environmental sustainability a priority and is producing more and more products and packaging that can be recycled. This means that all the erotic specialist’s electrical items are properly registered so that they can be handed over to the municipal utilities and recycled.

Many of the drug store items from ORION’s assortment are already 100% vegan. This will also be extended to other products as well. Another sustainable aspect: ORION doesn’t have plastic bags any more either – paper bags are offered instead.

Sustainability is a complex topic that is full of challenges, even with all of ORION’s efforts. However, ORION will continue to keep trying without losing sight of the product or its sales-boosting presentation.

THE GAY COMMUNITY CATALYSTS AND DRIVERS OF CHANGE

Currently we live in a world where Gay Pride has been marginalized and stolen from the gay community as a celebration for all minorities that have sought for some level of equality. This ‘free ride’ is disappointing, because the impact this event had on today’s acceptance of gays and lesbians deserves its own celebration — it was their courage and decades-long fight that got us to where we are today. Stonewall occurred in ‘69 and started a movement where gay men and women refused to be put to shame and ostracized for what others called a “deviant” lifestyle. That lifestyle included anal sex, group sex, sex clubs, S&M and fisting, to name a few. For decades, gay men were told that it was wrong, sick and disgusting. But we knew it wasn’t — it was exciting, enjoyable and extremely sexually gratifying. With no possibility of tolerance from the outside world, we sought out safe places to engage in our “deviant” sex and live our lives as best we could. However, the disgust went so deep in the heterosexual world (by only some, of course) that gay men were harassed and often beaten or killed.

But, in just one generation, all of these demonized sexual activities have become mainstream, printable in major press, and even taught to young people. What

changed? Thirty-five years ago, were men getting pegged by their girlfriends and openly discussing it with their friends? Were straight men going into the sex shop and buying cock rings to make their package bigger when they walked down the street? Were guys asking their girlfriends to rim them? What about light bondage and S&M? Was it considered deviant in the straight community?

If I were to ask you how many cock rings were sold from your store 20 years ago to straight men, versus gay men, I’d suspect you’d say not so many. But, when I look at how many cock rings were on the market 20 years ago, it was clearly not the market it has become today.

The reality for many cities that had “gay-borhoods” is that these formerly safe spaces for the community have now become the heart of yuppy families. The safe and tolerant environment that the gays created, coupled with the fixer-upper mentality made these areas cool and fun to live in. The gays are displaced, and although they may have started nesting in nearby areas in the last five to 10 years, there really is no need to, since gay men and women can safely move anywhere they want now.

Additionally, there is the demise of cruising as a result of the explosion of online hook-up sites — which started in 2001 with launch of Manhunt.net. Now, there is no need to seek out a gay area for cruising to meet like-minded individuals.

Although Match.com was around earlier and possibly takes the title of the first online dating site, there was a difference between dating and hooking up at that time. Today, the straight sites like Tinder offer the same easy hook-up platform that Grindr created in 2009. Hooking up is no longer considered taboo — it is mainstream and even desirable. Gays led the path to sexual freedom, but more specifically to hooking up frequently without guilt. What continued was a trend of erosion of the differences between the gay and straight sexual worlds, bolstering acceptance and this led to greater exploration of sexual practices.

If I look at the examples of what was considered deviant or specifically “gay/ lesbian” a few decades ago and what is now considered acceptable and heteroapproved and mainstream, I would say the hetero world owes the gay and lesbian world a big thank you.

The men and women who took stand at Stonewall were the first non-visible minority to fight for their sexual beliefs on a newsworthy scale, as these individuals made it clear to the world that what they were naturally driven to do sexually was not going to be suppressed. I say, “Thank you,” for fighting back and staying true to their desires. They set a foundation for allowing the development of products that at first were specifically for the gay man or woman, but would eventually become mainstream like cock rings, enemas, large dildos, butt plugs and strap-ons.

Thank you to the early merchants who recognized that opportunity for developing products specifically for the gay man. There was Doc Johnson, which developed a number of products that were very popular among gay men and some of my personal favorites; and CalExotics that developed the Colt range of products, as well as a handful of other vendors. When I first saw these products on the shelf, it was a validation that gay men and women needed different products than were being offered in the mainstream at the time. I suspect these adventurous manufacturers didn’t know that most of those specialized products would later become mainstream categories — and in fact, huge revenue-

earners. Thank you to these manufacturers for taking the time to understand the needs of gay men and women.

But, we also have to remember those gay men and women who went into the shops. They often had to find the products behind a curtain or from behind the counter, as they were not considered “pleasing” to other consumers. These shoppers were brave enough to overcome the shame that followed them when paying at the counter. I doubt anyone feels much shame today about buying a cock ring or a large dildo at an adult store.

This all happened in the last three decades. I look back at my first sex toy company and the development of a douche system that was going to make life a bit easier for the gay man — that was only 18 years ago. However, it immediately sparked a number of other brands to enter the markets, and suddenly, there was an enema/douche category, and stores created a space for a selection of items. This category has since evolved from being a gay man’s category to being a category for everyone.

This movement has opened a new frontier, and we have a more diverse array of products for the transgender and nonbinary communities as well. Some of these

sex toy innovations have even given new breath to medicalized products.

Today, we still need and want to have stores that appeal to different sexualities and niche interests, because the audience willing to shop at specialized stores is much broader than it was years ago. You will often see heterosexual couples shopping in a “gay”-themed store without any hesitation, and the vice versa. Isn’t this wonderful?

So next time you sell a strap-on to a heterosexual couple, you may fairly be wondering if it is for pegging, or for him to wear, or both — and it really does not matter because all of these uses are understood today to be completely acceptable, understandably desirable and without any sexual “labelling” implied.

And you can thank the gay men and women who stood up at Stonewall for being true to their identity and sexual desires; and the vendors who made products for the “deviants” of the time. Without these first products on the market and the shoppers for them, we may never have had the selection and acceptance of products available today.

The museum is appropriately situated in the city’s historic Tenderloin district where, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fight clubs, saloons, gambling dens, dance halls and brothels offered entertainment well into the night. Today, like its neighbours Saks and Tiffany’s, MoSex has the appearance of a swanky store. The museum entrance is found on E 26th St, while the MoSex store opens directly onto the prestigious 5th Avenue, the very definition of both prime retail location!

We visited MoSex in March, only a couple of days before the COVID-19 lockdown began in earnest. At that point the streets and subways were conspicuously quiet, but most stores and restaurants were still open, albeit almost empty. Despite this, MoSex was still surprisingly busy: to an outsider it looked like business as normal.

Editorial

We started with a tour of the museum (well, when in Rome...). The first floor featured Stag, the Elicit Origins of Pornographic Film, a collection of vintage film and more recent audio interviews with classic porn stars and their viewers. Up on the second floor was audiovisual artist Laia Abril’s sensitive, exhibition titled On Abortion: And the Repercussions of Lack of Access, complete with early medical tools from the Burns Archive & Collection (AKA the world’s largest collection of early medical and historic photographs).

Next, we queued to get into Superfunland:

Journey Into The Erotic Carnival, a raucous ride through the groundbreaking World’s Fair to the more infamous carnivals and circuses. Sponsored by Lelo, Womanizer and WeVibe brands amongst others, Superfunland was an absolute riot, the highlight for us being the Glory Stall game. This was a series of empty toilet stalls with mechanised dildos shooting out at different heights from various holes covering the walls. The aim was to tug as many dildos as possible in the allotted time, while the electric display above each stall announced the participant’s progress in points. What a hoot!

In the basement we visited the MoSex bar, Play. As founder Daniel Gluck explained in an interview with online resource ZDnet, ‘Our concern with the bar was that people would think, 'whips and chains’ [which is] too narrow an audience. If we want to engage people as a business, we can’t just serve this five percent. Not that we don’t want them to come… But I want your grandmother to come, too.’ Along with the bar, the store is open to the public, who can visit without paying admission to the museum.

Back on the ground floor we spoke to Kit Richardson, Buyer

and Merchandiser of the MoSex store, who told us about her role and the store in general. Read on to learn more about the staff and clientele of the MoSex store, and the enduring appeal of the cumrag. You have been warned!

Trading hours

The Museum is open 7 days a week from 11am to 10pm on weekdays and 11am to midnight on weekends. I work a typical full-time week, 5 days, 40 hours. But more than likely it’s 6 days and many, many more hours.

Mondays and Saturdays are our busiest days of the week. The busy season for us starts during the holiday season Early December and ends after Valentine’s – Valentine’s, of course being the busiest of all. I usually plan my vacations around these dates. I always go away mid-November to relax and prepare for the busy season to start and go away again in March – once everything has settled –to re-fresh and renew.

What makes a great store I believe there are a few fundamentals that make a great store; Product selection, educated & enthusiastic staff, and a safe welcoming environment. These 3 pillars ensure that all who come into the store can leave with a positive and valuable experience that is remembered.

What categories of product does the MoSex shop stock

Since we are both a museum and adult store, we carry some items you wouldn’t find at the Met and some items you wouldn’t find at your local sex store. Our product offerings vary from pleasure products, kink, smoke, to apparel, ceramics, and art. I try to ensure that no matter who walks in the door with whatever interest, there is something for them. And if there is not, I need 2 weeks to order it and it will be there.

What are some of your bestselling brands

What makes a great brand

In the past companies were considered great by the amount of product they produced. Now, it’s different. What makes a great brand is the mission behind the company, the research, the community it builds. Brands now have a balance of business and social impact which customers respond well too. If a company can show that they not only produce a body safe innovative product, but there is a philanthropic and social aspect to that brand, people gravitate more towards that company and will likely pay any sum to support them.

What are your most popular selling items

As far as pleasure products, the Je Joue G-Spot Bullet and the We-Vibe Sync are our best sellers. However, our best-selling product in the store…. is our infamous Cum Rag. A plain black rag with white text stating “Cum Rag.” I have learned to never underestimate customers and the power of the word “cum.”

How important is new product

To remain a leader in the industry it is essential to evaluate and bring in new product. New product is mostly synonymous with new research. And the more we research what people wants and how bodies respond to stimulation, the better we can adapt our products. I want to be able to offer the newest and best products on the market for my customers, so I am constantly staying up to date on trends, innovations, and market research.

What trends has your business observed in adult pleasure products

While I mentioned how companies are beginning to expand their missions and customers are responding well to this, what is happening is that companies are also

beginning to create products that are ambiguous in design and function. The more society has become open about sexuality and identity, toys now aren’t designed for specific genitalia in mind, but rather a product that can be used by anyone. Which in return has also changed the colors of toys in the offering. No longer are products bright pink. They vary in hues of blues, greens, purples, greys, and even yellows. The spectrum of toys is a reflection of the spectrum of sexuality and pleasure that exists. We are all into different things and have different bodies, so why not make a product that can be used in a variety of ways for a variety of people?! I am definitely a fan of this progress!

How do you create awareness

Unfortunately we are actually not allowed to advertise that we are an adult store, so people coming into the Museum are here for the museum and get a wonderful surprise when they find out they can leave with not only a boob jello shot from the bar, but some great lube and a new toy. We are able to advertise the Museum as a whole though, so we create awareness through our campaigns with the MTA, partnerships with NY tours, and search engines.

Does being connected to a Museum affect and shape the products you choose to stock Absolutely! Our clientele and foot traffic are quite different than most adult stores, so as much as I would love to bring in the 11 inch bright pink dildo, I know that product won’t sell well here and that the ceramic butt plug flower vase will.

The Museum of Sex is currently showing Superfunland, Stag and Laia Abril’s statement showcase On Abortion. How often do the exhibitions rotate

The rotation of exhibits varies. it is very dependent on the current social status, what people are into now, what’s popular, and what needs to be addressed more. The common lifetime of an exhibit is anywhere from 6 months to about 9 months. However, you have an exhibit like Superfunland which is permanent at the moment.

Does your stock change in line with the museum’s exhibitions I always want the store to reflect the experience one has in the museum, so whenever there is a new exhibit I bring in related material. For example, one of my favorite exhibits was Punk Lust. The Punk exhibition explored

the sex and the punk lifestyle in NYC in the 70s, so I brought a product selection from Manic Panic, started by Tish and Snooky Bellomo who were leaders in the punk era. When we launched the Araki gallery we had shibari extraordinaire Midori come and create an immersive rope experience for visitors as well as bringing in her book on bondage, a more diverse selection of rope offerings, and we hosted bondage workshops. We want the museum – including the store – to be a full experience, so bringing in product that reflects the galleries is essential.

Abril’s On Abortion is a political exhibition championing the Pro-Choice approach to abortion. Are you able to explore political opinions in-store

We do carry Abril’s book On Abortion in the store, and its launch coincided with Women’s Month (March) so we had it featured with other female, femme, and queer products in retail. I do think it is important to mention that the gallery in fact does not take a pro-choice approach. It is left to the viewer to form their opinion after experiencing what effects the lack of access to abortion has had on women.

The store at MoSex features huge windows on two sides

I love these windows and being able to design them is a highlight of my job. What we put in these windows reflect the museum and our mission. I tend to partner with brands to create windows that are relevant and catchy. You won’t see a window at Saks that says, “Oh MY G-Spot” or a black leather basque and chain leash surrounded by red latex with the words “WOOF.” I get to take creative liberties and produce windows that not only feature product that we sell but make commentary on taboos and force people to engage in conversation about sex. That is maximizing their potential. That is what windows should do.

The store opens onto the street and boasts entrances feeding from and into the museum

We wanted to make the store as open as possible. In most sex stores they are dimly lit small businesses overflowing with product. The Museum has large open windows and floor space to accommodate many products without becoming overbearing or intimidating. No-one wants to discuss their sex life and pleasure with someone standing behind a 6-foot podium looking down at them. Sales staff are staggered throughout the store to address any questions and in a comfortable way. Cashier is located towards the back to create a more intimate feel of your purchase. Testers are out on simple stands ready to be touched and turned on. There is a flow to the museum that inspires and encourages even the most shy and prudent to explore. Our entrances our strategic. An entrance on 5th Avenue to a world of sex. The first step a customer takes into the store, is the first step into normalizing sex.

The Museum of Sex in New York draws in all sorts of visitors

The demographic of the museum changes with the launch of exhibits I have found. We are mostly a tourist destination. Lately, our clientele have been younger adults in the age range of 18-35 and predominantly female. But any given Saturday you will see visitors from all races, ages, religions, and backgrounds wandering the store and sharing stories of favorite toys and laughs.

Locals versus tourists

We get in more tourists than locals. But local or tourist, their purchases aren’t distinguishable from one another. Pleasure products, enhancers, lube, naughty candy, rope. Tourists do end up buying more travel sized product though that’s for sure. I make certain that when I can get a travel size of a product, whether it be lube, massage oil,

or a smaller compact toy, I do it. We do have a few regulars, but because we are considered more of a tourist attraction it is quite a small number. They usually come in for a re-up on lube or enhancers.

In-store events

The Museum offers a myriad of events. I actually teach the workshops that we hold. The workshops range on a variety of topics including BDSM, anal, oral, and so forth. Bachelorette parties are very popular here as well. We recently had Planned Parenthood rent out the museum for a gala. We’ve done Fashion Week shows here, Stormy Daniels had her book signing here. One of my favorites was Doha Cat having her album release party here! That was great! We are a museum for the people, by the people.

Retail staff

The museum employs around 75 staff. Of that staff, 25 are retail.

Staff selection

I think what makes the store so fantastic is the absolute diversity of our staff. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, but the one passion they all share is in human sexuality and sex education.

Training

All of our retail staff are trained. They undergo typical retail store training, but also adult retail store training which is offered through some fantastic distributors like Williams Trading and Blush Novelties. These trainings address gender and sexuality, how to talk to customers, differences in lubes, product variety, and much more. I am a Certified Sexual Health educator, so it is also my job to ensure staff are trained in proper verbiage, knowledge, and resources for customers. Staff also receive trainings directly from vendors in-store and are often given products to review so they can best talk about the products with clientele. Our staff are trained to approach customers in an open and inviting manner to establish a safe space where the customer is welcome to ask questions and have the sales associate liaison and guide them in this exciting exploration of pleasure.

What do staff most love about their job

It is never a dull day at MoSex. I believe most of our staff love the opportunity to expand their knowledge here and work in a unique field that allows them to

help others explore the realms of passion and explore their own pleasure as well.

Online

We do not have an online store. Having an online store would unfortunately jeopardize our ability to market and advertise with some agencies, so we sacrificed this part of the store. However, even when we did have an e-commerce it did not bring in enough to compete with other online retailers or even our own brick and mortar. Currently there are no plans to sell online; however, with COVID we may need to revisit.

New York in covid lockdown

It is certainly rough for all of us involved. We miss working at the Museum and can’t wait to get back. At the moment we are all discussing creative ways to continue the work of the Museum even from home. We stay connected through email, group texts, and social media.

I have been able to schedule various webinars and vendor trainings for staff. Three times a week, each for an hour. It is completely optional, but it does keep everyone engaged and up to par with their knowledge and

skill set. Vendors have also sent staff products in the mail as gifts to show their appreciation for the staff which is a real mood booster! This way once we do open, we are ready to hit the ground running! And it also shows the Museum cares about their staff which in return ensures that they stay with us. And that is important to me.

5 years ago versus now

The Adult retail business is becoming more inclusive and has more of a social impact than ever before. An industry predominantly run and controlled by men focused mostly on profit, is now flourishing because of the innovation and leadership of people of color, women, femmes, and queer professionals who’s focus is creating product that of quality. I cannot emphasize enough that the industry is truly progressing in a way that I am proud to be part of. And how do I directly support this? By carrying these brands that may be a little more expensive for me to bring in and may take longer to sell, but the truth is, every gamble that I take with these companies ends up paying off because they are companies with missions that customers believe in; that I believe in, that staff believe in.

The best thing

I think the best thing our business has done is our participation in the PRIDE march and activities every year. It shows we value the community, we care, and we support them.

Last words

New York City is a beautiful island full of people from all over the world, the Museum of Sex is able to bring all these people

together over our common interest, sex, and give space to those people to explore it further in an environment that is engaging, stimulating, and safe. And I am proud to be part of that. It doesn’t matter if I make a sale. What matters is the conversations people have after they leave and if they take what they learn here and spread the good word of sexual freedom and acceptance to the man afford.

When and how

I have been in the adult retail business now for 5 years. I was working internationally with the UN as a mediator in the Middle East, and while conducting research started to see how political conflict and the environment can seep and directly influence sex lives. I finished my stay abroad and came back to the US where I convinced the owner of the Velvet Lily in Philadelphia to take me on as a staff member. From there I began taking sex education courses

within a few weeks I was in NYC working at the Museum of Sex. If there’s one thing I have learned it is persistence is key to achieving my dreams and goals. Without it I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. When I know I want something I do it. Could be the Triple Scorpio in me too, though!

A typical day at the Museum of Sex retail store

Coffee. It always starts with coffee. For me, a typical day isn’t hours of checking emails and

adult products in the market, taste testing lubes, designing windows with vendors to feature, evaluating stock levels and inventory, making sure staff have trainings, and I also dedicate 2 days a week to working directly on the floor with the retail team. I spend that time working with customers and staff alike. It allows me to see what customers are asking for and current product trends. If I get home and don’t smell like lube and dildos, it’s been a disappointing day.

A typical day during lockdown

Still coffee. Every day starts with coffee in my world. Certainly not as exciting and eventful as a typical day at the Museum, but I have managed to set up online interactive trainings with staff throughout this period, which is proving to be a lifesaver for us all. It gives us something to look forward to especially being in NYC and on lockdown. I do answer the occasional emails and have some business calls about plans once we do open, but for right now

What I have tasked myself with is creating ways in which the Museum can be both profitable and have a larger positive social impact once we open again. Also, working from home during lockdown means I can blare my music without judgement and in no pants. Not sure how fond my colleagues would be of my 80’s rock playlists

The most significant influence in my working career

There have been many influences in my career that have led me to this point. There is a person that I truly respect and admire who has truly guided me during this time; my mentor at the Museum of Sex, Ian Kulp. As Director of Retail, Ian taught me the ins and outs of the business and constantly pushed me to grow and further my skill set while fusing my passions and vocation. I am thankful to him for that. Ian now works at [sex-tech company] Lora DiCarlo.

What are the pluses and minuses

Soo many pluses! I have met so many wonderful people, made fantastic connections, and heard the best stories. I take pride in my job and the Museum. It has provided me with knowledge and experiences that would have been unattainable at other places. Minuses… I do work a lot and the stress can get pretty heavy, but in the end, it is absolutely worth it.

I’m most proud of

My diligence. If I wouldn’t have persisted in this field I would not be where I am today. As a woman in any profession there are hurdles to be overcome and while this industry is progressing to be one that is more inclusive and accepting, there are still battles to be fought, and I will not go gently into that dark night. I will persist and fight on the front lines for a better industry; a more inclusive, diverse, and educational industry.

One of my most memorable moments

Winning the Xbiz Award for Best Retailer 2020. It wasn’t just that I got to wear a beautiful gold sequin gown and accept an award, but that there was recognition from my industry peers of the hard work that I have put into the MoSex store. I am grateful to those who notice and appreciate what the Museum and I stand for.

Last book I read

I am currently re-reading Portrait of a Killer by Patricia Cornwell. When I was 12 my mother gave me the book and I was soo fascinated by Jack the Ripper that I put together a 60 page powerpoint for my Book Presentation at school. Now, the school was not particularly fond of a child showing their classmates photos of women slashed apart and discussing sex, so the presentation was not necessarily received as fondly as I had hoped.

However, my mother being a professor and admirable of my passion took me to London and we went on the Jack the Ripper tour. I was soo intrigued by the sex work and sexuality that this book addressed that I believe it to truly be the point in my life where my journey into this industry began. I figured during these times it would be great to connect with the book that kind of started it all for me.

Favourite movie and TV show

Admittedly, my favorite movie is Marie Antoinette by Sophia Coppola. Mostly because the soundtrack and costumes are phenomenalwho couldn’t love a movie with music by The Strokes, New Order, and the Cure?! Also, because Versailles is probably my favorite place that I have been. I was an Art History minor in college and the Rococo period is by far my favorite art period. Hidden beneath this tattooed and leather clad exterior is a gaudy soul who loves macarons, gold leafing, and pastels. My favorite TV Show would have to be Peaky Blinders. Again, amazing music selection and I have a thing for Cillian Murphy.

What I wanted to be

It was tie between wanting to be a star on Broadway and being a Marine Biologist. I loved performing and was always singing when I was younger, but there was also part of me that was soo drawn to the sea. I ended up going to Pace University for Musical Theatre but graduated a Political Science major.

What would most people not know

I grew up a military brat and did, at one point, live on a rodeo. I was the sassiest little cowgirl in white fringe diamond studded cowboy boots you’d ever seen. And I periodically indulge in 90s country music.

When I’m not working, I’d rather be

Traveling. I love to travel and any moment that I can I am on a plane and off to explore the world. Every place that I visit I make sure to find the local sex shops and check them out.

What I like best

What I love most about my job is the conversations I have with visitors about sex and sexuality from all types of people. Different ages, races, religions. How and when

Adam and I were already good friends. One day in 2012 he saw an article in a medical journal about technology being used to harvest semen from men with spinal cord injuries. In terms of growth, where do you see yourselves now

Currently, North America remains our strongest market with increasing sales year over year. In the last 12 months, we’ve had incredible growth and have seen our strongest sales ever from

the European market as well as massive development in the Australian market which seems to be steadily increasing every quarter. We are aiming to grow South America, Russia, as well as Asia as those regions are the newest and have been the most challenging in terms of growth so far.

How do you promote and create awareness

We run sex-positivity based campaigns, educating our audiences about important issues like masturbation, G-spots, and erectile dysfunction. We have a special love for FUN campaigns like the GuyFi masturbation booth we hosted in New York and more recently, our Australia’s Biggest Wanker campaign which was a smash hit.

As things open back up, we look forward to returning to our favourite trade shows where we can continue to contribute to our community and stay at the forefront of developments in sex tech.

Working with retailers

Working with retailers is really where we shine and our team loves to strategize, build and execute plans for retailers to grow their sales. We work tirelessly to create marketing initiatives and promotions to fit any size retailer. We create custom marketing campaigns which contain many different elements such as SPIFFs, GWP’s, incentives for staff and for buyers, additionally, we keep our brand looking fresh in-stores with beautifully designed displays and educative materials to help our products pop off the shelves and create an experience for the consumer to help make the sale. We conduct instore trainings all year round to keep staff up-to-date and

informed and we have gorgeous life-style images and product assets to help the online retailers showcase our brand. We will always be adapting, creating, and thinking to the future when it comes to working with the retailers because we are the future, and the future is now.

We consider our distributors as our partners and a very important piece to our B2B business. Our distributors can offer similar marketing packages and promotional elements to their customers and they have

access to the same selling tools, materials, and assets as we provide our direct retailers. We regularly train the distributor’s sales reps and provide them with product kits so they become Hot Octopuss product experts and can provide their customers with the best possible service and information.

Overall, the market seems to be evolving by demanding more high-end penis toys and more powerful, innovative vibrators.

Country specific trends

Over the years, USA seems to be the most receptive to our design and branding while Latin American and Russia seem to be

a lot slower with selling highend penis toys. We’re working hard to create products to fit all budgets, bodies, and categories. The industry as a whole has seen the penis toy category explode in the last two years and this trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere so Hot Octopuss will continue to do what we do best-create beautiful, functional, powerful sex toys for everybody that can be purchased in every country.

Product categories

Our first love has always been penis toys that provide solutions for erectile dysfunction. We knew how painful the lack of penis toys was, especially for those who don’t get reliable erections (which is most penis owners at some point in their life.)

We’ve recently launched our first G-spot vibrator, because vulva owners deserve luxury toys as well! We took into account senior women and those with disabilities, who might prefer a broad, gel tip and larger buttons for comfort and accessibility. Design and manufacturing

We put a great deal of time and intention into the design process. We interview focus groups to get feedback from specific groups of people, such as seniors, queer folks, and people with disabilities.

As you can imagine, the development process is quite thorough and involves testing several prototypes. This part is never rushed. We take all the time we need and get as much quality feedback as we can along the way. Even naming the products is a group collaboration!

Staff

Our sales teams are absolute power houses; we have one based in the US and one based in Europe. Our customer service folks are absolute angels and part of our core team based in the UK. How and when

I have a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Law and I never anticipated that the world of pleasure would be my purpose in life. In 2008, my close friend, Amy Baldwin along with her mom, opened a sex-positive boutique adult shop in California and asked if I would be the store’s manager. Granted, I had zero retail experience and had never owned a vibrator, but I decided to take her up on the challenge. Afterall, I was still preparing to become a lawyer but wasn’t practicing yet so I decided to dive in, and that decision changed my life and my career! I moved to become Director of Sales in 2012 and in 2013, I met Adam and Jules [the founders of Hot Octopuss]. I had an incredible magnetism to both as people and could see how innovative and influential their brand was from the beginning. It took some time but, 2017 would mark the year my pleasure stars would align. That year, I launched the Shameless Sex podcast with Amy Baldwin and became the Global Head of Sales at Hot Octopuss both of which have given me more purpose, drive, and inspiration than anything I could have ever imagined.

A typical day

The only thing typical about a day at Hot Octopuss is that there’s nothing typical. From our product collection, to our team, to our customer base, we continue to grow very quickly so there are always a million things to do. I typically wake up, do a morning

meditation, and have a chai.

Then I’m ready to hop on a video call with the team in London or our rep in the Netherlands who are approaching the end of their workday (I’m in California so I’m 8 hours behind). After that, I meet with our US rep to strategize, analyze, and organize. From there, I could be on a call with a buyer, conducting a product training, building promotions for an account, designing a pitch presentation, forecasting for sales, creating marketing initiatives, shooting video content for our social media channels, or I could be on an airplane headed to meet a buyer and train a store, each day is different but it’s always very busy.

The most significant influence in my working career

I have two people I must mention. Amy, the Shameless Sex co-host who birthed me into the industry and who teaches me how to be a better sex educator every day with her shining certifications and gleaming credentials in the field of sexuality. And Jules, the co-founder/COO of HO who consistently impresses me with her keen skills in all facets of the business and who I admire greatly for her patience, strength, and perseverance. She has shown me what it means to be a leader, she has taught me the power of listening and the importance of believing in oneself. It’s an honor to work with her every day.

I’m most proud of

The Shameless Sex podcast. We get hundreds of emails from listeners expressing their gratitude and telling us that we’ve changed their lives. It brings me to tears on the regular because I never knew that speaking openly about sex and pleasure would help so many. It’s been an absolute joy to have a positive impact on so many people and we won’t stop until everyone in the world has the sex and pleasure they deserve!!

One of the most memorable moments

One of the most memorable moments in my career was receiving the WIA Women of the Year award. It was the first year the award was ever given so I was in absolute amazement that I was the one being honored with such a prestigious industry award. It felt like I was winning our industry’s version of an Osar.

Last book I read

The Astrology of Self-Discovery. I’m very intrigued by western astrology and this book combines depth psychology with astrology to help unlock your potential and deepen your personal awareness. I love science and astrology is a very ancient science people have used for thousands of years, the accuracy will blow your mind!!

Favourite movie/TV show

Sex and the City. Love the series and the movies too! I re-watched every episode last month and it still rings true in so many ways. Plus, the fashion is INCREDIBLE.

What I wanted to be

I was born in the 80’s and I loved the cartoon She-Ra Princess of Power. My mom has kept several of these school projects and I love having the reminders that I wanted to be a cartoon superhero when I grew up. Well, I didn’t make She-Ra happen, but I do feel like I’m the Princess of Pleasure and for that, my mother is proud.

What would most people not know about me

I love hip hop music, snowboarding and doing black flips (and sometimes all of those at once).

My favourite place

The beach. I prefer white sand and turquoise waters, but I’d be content with turquoise sand and white waters. I just love the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. It’s relaxing, tranquil, and rejuvenates my soul.

When I’m not working, I’d rather be doing

Drinking a glass of beautiful wine with friends and snuggling with my 10lb dog, Legend. He’s the best!

What I like best about my job

If I could change one thing

I would ensure pleasure was taught to all people early in life. Currently, if there is any sex education taught in school, the curriculum only covers STD’s, contraception, anatomy, and maybe sexual orientation but nothing about pleasure and consent. If schools could adopt a sex-positive, more pleasure focused sex-ed program, there would be less shame, judgement, and stigma around sex and the world may just be a better place.
