Swan’s Most Successful AdultEx Show With the completion of AdultEx, Swan has returned to its head offices in Toronto, Canada reporting incredible success. I would suggest that like most owners of a business I am constantly looking on a daily basis at trends of media advertising, window displays etc. The 2 free local newspapers can be a good guideline. Store layout and product knowledge is important on a weekly basis and then I have the monthly MYOB to do for Mr Tax Man.

Pleasures Unlimited is open 7 days a week. Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm with Thursday late night trade until 9pm. Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday we have gentleman’s hours of 10am to 4pm. We close 3 days a year being New Year’s Day, Easter Friday and Christmas Day. I usually

What have been some of the best moments at your business? Personal satisfaction from when we sponsor people for sporting events, donate towards quiz nights for sick kids, (one especially to raise money to buy a wheelchair for a young boy with cerebral palsy where they raised $10,000.00 on the night), sponsoring or donating to our yearly Relay For Life to raise money for cancer.
What are a few of the key variables in order of importance to ensure the best chance of success in adult retail? You need to be business aware but discreet in advertising so as not to offend the general public or local council. Have a clean, presentable and well stocked store. You need to have capable staff who know what they are talking about. You need to be 100% on the ball at all times. The Adult Industry can be quite fickle and change very quickly with products so you need to be aware of changes. You need to be approachable not stand offish when meeting people at business gatherings or casual events and try to always promote your business at these events.
What makes a great store? The décor, staff, cleanliness and display of items.
What variables define a great store location? Foot traffic, locality to parking, window display to catch the eye of people driving or walking by and good but discreet signage.
What size is your store and how is the fit out? The store is 110 square meters with the service area in the middle of the store. When you come through the front door you see novelty items to “soften” the image of the store that then run into the vibrator area. Free standing display units in the middle of the front of the store guide the person to dildos, bondage and anal toys. Through to the back of the store is the DVD section with male toys
and larger items. There is also a back door entry door so customers have two ways to enter the store.

It is hard to define demographics when in a country area even though Bunbury is a city. Country areas tend to have a more transient population than a larger city. I have always preferred to exclude income, education, home ownership etc and focus on welcoming all people.
I would say we have about a 60% repeat business rate.
On average we do a remerchandise fortnightly with a major relay about every two months.

How do you train your staff? Training can come from my wholesalers, company reps/owners and feedback from customers. I train on a one on one basis unless a rep is here when I ask staff to attend. With the changing forms of packaging now I even show staff how to open some of the trickier products and make sure they can do it correctly without breaking the packaging. Not easy sometimes.
What makes a great adult retail staff member? Definitely their ability to make a customer feel at ease when they

focus are looking for a personal product. Then their expertise in product knowledge is also a key factor to a good staff member. After that it is the respect from me towards my staff that encourages their “want and desire” to work in the Adult Industry.
How/where do you find new staff? Fortunately I don’t have a lot of staff changes but when I do need a staff member I put the feelers out locally through friends and then use the local newspaper. A classic timing case about five years ago was when Sharon walked through the door and asked if there were any jobs available. I was literally just at the point of sending an advertisement to the newspaper. To cut a long story short; I employed here and she is still with me today.
What do staff most love about their jobs at your business? I am sure we would like to think as owners of a store that it is because they love working for us but we have to be realistic about this don’t we. I asked my staff to jot down a few points and the dominant theme from them was that they really liked assisting customers to purchase the correct item for their needs especially when it was a first time for the customer so here are their words. Sharon. Assisting customers that come into the shop for the first time, putting them at ease and making it an enjoyable experience for them. Also working with a great group of people. Tamara. Being able to help our customers purchase the right product for their specific needs. Working in such an open and fun environment is great too. Deborah. The highlight for me is the enjoyment of helping customers that come into the store because of medical or health issues such as prostate or erectile 30
dysfunction and being able to educate them about their different options in resuming a sex life. The relief on their faces after seeing or hearing about products that can assist them is most rewarding.
If we look at your adult retail business 5 years ago versus now, what changes did you see and how have you responded to them? One of the biggest changes for my business was the sharp decline in magazine sales attributed to the internet and social media. I focused on new lines and expanding growth areas like anal and bondage products. Also the increased interest from customers for rechargeable products saw me start to increase that range and decrease some of the battery style toys.
What categories of product do you carry? What proportion of the store is devoted to those categories? Adult toys 40%, Novelties 35%, Body Products like toppings, lubrications etc 15%, DVD’s 10%.
What are some of your best selling brands? Loveline vibrators, RealRock dildos, Fleshlight. We-Vibe, Novelle, Sports Fucker cockrings and recently the upgraded ranges from Adam and Eve are becoming popular.
What makes a great brand? For me it is the packaging to catch the customer’s eye, the back up service from the manufacturer/ wholesaler and promotion of a product.
Do your customers desire well known American and European brands or is it not so important? Branding does not appear to be a major contributor to a customer’s choice of product but obviously
there are exceptions to this with brands like We-Vibe etc.
What would be your mix of sales of premium higher priced branded items vs lower end product. Premium is about 15% of sales mainly in the rechargeable ranges.
How important is new product or product selection in a store? Very important. We make sure that we have new products each month which we highlight in store and on line.
What trends has your business observed in adult pleasure products? Without a doubt, bondage and anal products are the two biggest increase areas over the last 3 years.
How does your business keep informed about adult pleasure products?
Ease of use, quietness, shape, features, word of mouth recommendations to friends and company promotion of the product. A classic example is the Womanizer. We now have people coming in and just buying them. They have already done their own checking of the product.

I have tried promoting through Google but found their restrictions to my web site content frustrating. I have Facebook but since they launched onto the stock exchange you now have to boost your posts to reach the people that like your page. Unfortunately Facebook will allow you to have an Adult Site with age restrictions, but they will not allow you to boost a post because you are an Adult Store. I even did a cut and paste from their web site recommended wording to promote condoms and they declined the post.
I updated my web site just over a year ago to make it user friendly to all social media avenues like ipads, mobiles etc. I do a monthly newsletter to people who register on line. We check that a product is working and give a warranty but with these vibrators, you have to cut the packaging off because it is completely sealed. This means that if someone is buying it for a gift, their friend is receiving an open item in a cut package which does not look good. It would be far better to have it in a resealable package.

It is definitely an interesting industry to work in and you make some good friends who are like minded. Build a good rapport with your wholesalers because without them on your side you will always have an uphill battle. That is one of the joys of owning my business for 21 years; the help and support I get from my wholesalers. They have definitely made it easier for me with advice and support.
Be aware that most people coming into your store require help in guiding them to the right product for their needs. Find an area that you can become a specialist in; whether that be health issues like erectile dysfunction, using a local doctor to recommend people for personal items like lubrications etc. Find an area and become the best at it.

Tell us about your premises Our Nomi Tang products we design in Germany, where our team of experienced designers
is based. But the majority of our staff is based in our two offices in Hong Kong and in China where we manufacture our products and manage the distribution business. From our China warehouse we obviously serve all customers in China. All other countries are served from our Hong Kong warehouse. Hong Kong is also our central hub for all imported products we distribute in Asia.
How and to what countries are you selling to? The Nomi Tang product line we started to sell in Asia and Europe, but we are now also selling in Australia after having set up another warehouse in Sydney. In a next step we are looking for distributors to expand in the Americas. Talking about our distribution business, we distribute to virtually all major Asian markets from India in the west to Japan in the east, from China in the north to Indonesia in the south.
In terms of growth, where do you see yourselves now? How are the markets developing globally for you? Despite constantly growing the past 7 years, we still see a solid growth and we are very optimistic about our markets. Especially in our home market Asia we predict to grow above average.
How do you promote, create awareness, social media, trade shows… Despite Loewie and Nomi Tang are already well known in our markets, we are always reaching out to connect with new and existing customers. We are using many social media but also our newsletter to inform about news and to announce new products. And of course we are present at many trade shows.
Direct sales? Amazon, Ebay, your thoughts? These days there is a growing number of sales channels which are all very diverse. Different sales channels attract different customer groups. There are pros and cons which every customer may weight differently. Finally customers are choosing their favorite mix of sales channels. This is what all successful brands are accepting and hence we are serving all those channels from offline to online from small shops
to big chains, from small web shops to big online platforms.
What percentage of your product do you think is sold online vs brick and mortar stores? This question is not easy to answer, because this percentage is different from market to market. On the one hand there are many online driven markets such as China, but there are also many markets with high offline sales such as Singapore.
What can you tell us about working with retailers? Retailers are in the center of our focus, because they are the first line of contact for the customers. Therefore we provide all kinds of support, such as training materials, floor samples, displays, graphics, local translations, videos

Are there any country specific trends globally or are some countries more receptive to certain product categories over others?

Every market has its own characteristics and preferences in terms of product categories or colors. Therefore our team developed a very good sense of which products are selling well in which markets. This experience is the key to success and we share that knowledge with the brands we are representing to be successful.
What brands are you now distributing and how did you select these? In selecting the brands we are representing we are very

focus selective. We apply many criteria such as product quality, innovation, reliability of their supply chain, etc. but we also try to create a portfolio of brands which complement each other, so that we have a well rounded assortment of top notch products.
How has the market for lubricant evolved over the years? Lubricants are essentials, maximizing the user’s experience. In this regard we have educated the markets about the usage of the right lubricants and this is now paying off. Our lubricants are made in compliance of the highest standards catering exactly the customer’s demand for high quality lubricants.
What are some of your best sellers and what makes a product a ‘best seller’. Best seller always have one thing in common, they do not excel in just one characteristic but in all, namely innovative and useful features, plausible use cases, attractive design, safe materials, superior quality, attractive packaging, reasonable pricing… supported by well thought of marketing. Since these are the basic ingredients for successful products, both Loewie and Nomi Tang applying these criteria throughout the whole product selection process.
What can you tell us about the manufacturing process? In the beginning is the inspiration, the product idea which is later discussed with our various teams in-house, but we also invite customers to share their opinion in these early stages. Once we have collected as much input as possible and we have fixed our requirement list we start the industrial design process which typically takes several selection stages and iterations until the whole team is happy with the prototypes. Then the tricky part starts. Our 34
engineering team needs to fit all components into the space the industrial design allows. This process also takes a few iterations between engineering and design to finish the detailed 3D drawings. At this point of time a functional prototypes are created which are then extensively tested to ensure functionality and ergonomics. Also here several iterations are needed to get the perfect solution. Only then the tools and molds are created and the production process is prepared. Once the first parts are received it takes another few iterations to optimize the molds before the first trial production can start. Only after extensive tests these products are approved and we ramp up the production. So you may understand that due to these many tests and iterations the exact launch date is hard to predict. But since quality is at our utmost importance, we are willing to spend this extra effort.
What legal and compliance issues are there to deal with in regard to manufacturing? Since we are mainly active in Asia, we often see manufacturers producing counterfeits or misusing trademarks. Hence the legal requirements and compliance requirements have increased over the past few years. Especially when it comes to online sales,
platforms and sellers are getting very cautious asking for many certificates and documents before allowing a product to be sold.
Tell us about your staff resources. How have staff resources changed for you over the years and the technology involved in selling? Back in 2008 we started with 2 people. Not counting manufacturing, our team meanwhile grew to more than 30 employees. Our processes have changed a lot since we constantly introducing new technologies to increase our efficiency and also to cater the needs of our customers in terms graphic designs, website development, digital marketing, etc.
Where do you see the company now and where would you like it to be in 5 years? Currently Loewie is the leading distributor of western brands in Asia. We will continue our path to increase the brand awareness and brand value of the brands we represent in our markets and so we will target higher turnover. Also we will continue our successful cooperation with Nomi Tang to launch more exciting products…stay tuned!

When and how did you get into your current business? I started into this business in 2007, after some very disappointing visits to adult toy stores. The stores I visited at that time did not offer the design and quality I was looking for. They just sold the old-style products with offensive designs and very poor quality. So I decided to create my own products and soon after I realized that many of my friends were very enthusiastic about my stylish handmade products and willing to buy some for themselves and their friends. So I started to sell my products and my own personal Nomi Tang brand was born.
A typical day… …starts with a good coffee! :) Once in the office I get involved with my team at Loewie to discuss our designs, prototypes, customer feedback and resulting ideas for new exiting products. But I also like to spend time in our production, the birthplace of our products, to make sure only top quality is leaving our factory. But there are also a lot of days I’m out of the office, visiting customers or attending tradeshows.
The most significant influence in my working career was/is Most inspiration I receive from Loewie! Besides they are a fantastic distributor, they are a great team doing an awesome job helping me with Engineering, Production, Sales and Marketing. Without Loewie I would not have been able 46
to be so successful with my brand. Also I get inspired when spending time in nature. There are some favorite places where I like to go to relax. Once I watch Mother Nature, I get a clear mind and new ideas are popping up which I take back and discuss then with my team at Loewie. When and how did you get into your current business I have been with Calexotics for 14 years. When I started working for Cal, I was not familiar with the industry. I found out about the position from a personal trainer that was also working with Susan.
A typical day There’s no such thing as a typical day at Calexotics and that’s one of the reasons I love working here, there’s always something happening and never a dull day. I can be on the road visiting with customers, in the office following up after my trip or working with our new product development team. Our daily focus is providing exceptional customer service, high fulfillment rates and a fantastic assortment of products to suit all customers. CalExotics is a great company to work for and I definitely enjoy myself.
The most significant influence in my working career was/is Susan Colvin & Jackie White have had the biggest impact on my career. I’m so fortunate to work with two amazing women, they’re the dynamic duo! I’ve learned so much from them about business and how to have a strong work ethic, integrity and foster long lasting business relationships.
I’m most proud of Professionally, I’m most proud of the direction our company is going. Last year, we changed our logo and have made some packaging changes and enhancements. In addition, we’ve launched the CalExotics Institute, an e-learning platform designed to help educate industry professionals about our products. This is an extension of our sales staff and something I use on a daily basis. I can’t be everywhere, even though I try, so 48
the CalExotics Institute is the perfect tool for my customers to use when I am not there. This year I’m most proud of our new Inspire collection. Inspire is a beautiful line of intimate products designed to enhance the overall well-being and health of women. A portion of the proceeds are being donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, an organization dedicated to the successful recovery of cancer survivors. This is an incredible cause and is will ultimately help many people, I am proud to be a part of it. Personally, I’m most proud of my parents. They have made many sacrifices so that my sisters and I could get a college education and make something of ourselves. I’m where I am today because of them.
One of the most memorable moments was The first time I went to Australia for Adultex in Cairns is very memorable. It was a great experience even though I was only there for the show and had very little time to myself. I wasn’t sure if I was going to have the opportunity to go back, so on my last day there I ran to the zoo to checked out koala’s and wallabies. It was such a fun experience. I loved seeing all of the animals and experiencing something new.
Last book I read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I read this book years ago and came across it recently and read it again. It’s an inspirational book and a great tool for personal growth. The four agreements are: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best. These statements have been a staple for me in my work life and reading this book again helped me put them back into focus. I recommend this book to my colleagues all the time.
Favourite movie/TV show I enjoy watching reality shows. My favorites are Dancing with the Stars, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Real Housewives of Atlanta. I can’t believe I’m admitting to this.
What would most people not know about me One thing most people don’t know about me is my love for fast cars. I love driving fast; it’s exhilarating and gets my heart racing. Sometimes this love gets me into trouble; in fact I recently got a speeding ticket in Denver Colorado. I may need to slow down a bit, but only when I see a police officer.
My favourite place My favorite place is Australia! It’s beautiful and the people are wonderful, I look forward to my trips every time.
When I’m not working I’d rather be doing I travel a lot for work and when I’m home it’s nice to get together with family and friends and do “normal” things.

Heidi ZUEGN When and how did you get into your current business I’ve been in the industry since 2006 when I started up Max Black in Newtown with my ex partner. It was a sharp, steep learning curve and I turned the store from one of the worst, to the best independent stores in Australia. Since selling up I’ve been doing all sorts of things such as personal consulting and making over stores (Passionfruit Melbourne and three Everything Adult stores), PR for major brands, sales rep for Two Ducks and my own lingerie pop up store. I’m ready for a new challenge though!
