LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Sara Calvosa sara@synthesis.net
Presenting My fellow Chico-Americans, put your hands together for the new all-lady Synthesis production team. Yes, that's right; in an exciting and unprecedented turn of events, Bill Fishkin has compiled an all-woman dream team. After a short and super pain-free search, we found a new entertainment editor right under our noses-literally she was under our noses-sitting at Dain's desk, being his girlfriend. Come to find out, she's also a talented and clever writer, she's cheeky and charming; "she'' is Amy Olson. We think Amy is going to bring a broader scope of diversity to the Arts & Entertainment pie, so feel free to welcome her by sending in all your ideas for entertainment coverage! *Cue Laverne & Shirley theme song* Another thing I wanted to mention-it's about your vegetables. If you're not getting the weekly CSA from GRUB, you're kinda blowing it. It's a weekly horn-of-plenty and such a great deal. As I was walking in the sunshine down the dirt path, past the trampoline to pick up my box of badass vegetables, I was thinking, "this is such a great service, we're so lucky:' And a lady walking past me plucked that thought right out of my head and said out loud to nobody in particular (well to me, I was there), "this is so great...$20 bucks a week, it's just the best, we're so lucky!" I thumbs-upped her sentiment and collected my bushels. I'm not sure what your excuses are for not joining this CSA but I've tried to imagine what they could be: "It's too expensive:' No it's not, shut up! $20 per week and you get veggies to feed a family of six, plus there are always freebie extras to take home. I have a family of four and we have so many leftovers. "There's too much, I can't eat all those vegetables, what do I do with them all?" Get a juicer or a blender. "But isn't that hippie talk?" No! Juicing is awesome and an excellent way to use up the last of that bok choy/kale/parsley. Also, you can freeze those juices to make healthy, delicious popsicles. My friend just made a bok-choy/honeydew melon -juice popsicle and she is a genius, so there you go. "All the leafy greens seem to wilt and go bad really fast:' I cracked that code for you, baby: clean your veggies when you get them home, store them in a ziploc with a damp paper towel, and voila, you're out of excuses. Plus, you can bring your kids to the GRUB farm to jump on the trampoline while you pick up your produce. What a great thing for kids-doing trampoline tricks right next to a big, beautiful, abundant farm. I think that's an excellent farm-to-fun association and childhood memory. This week we've pulled off an amazing feat of local photography, gathering photographers from all over Chico to compile a 24-hour project about life in Chico. Thank you Kathy, for herding cats to make it happen, and thank you so much to our amazing photographers for working on this project with us. We've also got a Wayne "The Train'' Hancock interview by Jeremy Gerrard, so feast your eyes and don't forget to harass Amy with all your new ideas at editorial@synthesis.net! JUNE 3 - JUNE 9, 2013

Blowout The Memorial Day weekend turned on me. This happens sometimes. I tend to get so excited about the first official long weekend-the first paid break from the constant, weekly, fortyhour robberies of time and life-that I over-plan, smoke out, and go up in flames. This was one of those times. I could feel the depression coming on by mid-Sunday, and by Monday morning I was crippled with angst and pain, barely able to pull myself from the recliner in the carport. Eventually I dragged my pathetic carcass onto the couch where I watched a barrage of war movies, fading in and out of consciousness so that I might miss the end of one film and tune in a third of the way through the next. By early afternoon I made the time-tested decision to try to drink through the depression, and it seemed to work, until I blacked out. But retribution was swift and sure. The morning after, in the process of jockeying the two cars into position, I realized the right rear tire on the truck was flat. The Toyota has a full-sized spare, but it took me about half an hour to figure out how to free it from its position under the truck's bed. I resorted to the owner's manual, but in my addled state even the simple pictograms were confusing.
The attachments I had before me didn't seem to match the ones in the book. After piecing the thing together, I jammed it into a hole and twisted it and lo and behold, the spare tire lowered. There are some crafty engineers over there at Toyota, or at least there were back in the late 1980s when this particular truck was manufactured. Once I finally managed to free it, I learned that the spare tire had no air. White as a ghost, hands shaking, sweating profusely and on the verge of vomiting, I made my way down to the gas station and aired up the spare. It held the air and so I made my way back home, jacked up the truck, and switched it out for the damaged tire.
FACEBOOK.COM/CHICOCA • SYNTHESISWEEKLY.COM
I took the bad tire down to Quality Used Tires (probably my favorite business in Chico) and because I get all of my tires there, they fixed it no charge. It turned out to be sliced, as opposed to punctured, but they were able to patch it with no problems. All said and done, I rolled into work Tuesday morning at 11:30 a.m., just short oflunchtime. Overall, the weekend was a complete bust. I dug a few holes for Trish, but otherwise failed miserably to make any meaningful forward progress on any of the many projects I currently have going. I didn't fire up the weed whacker, the lawn mower, or the tractor. I mostly laid around, feeling bad and drinking myself stupid.

Anustart Well guys, it finally happened. The day we were all waiting for came and went. I'm speaking (obviously) about the release of season four of Arrested Development on Netflix. By now, at some point, most of you (like me), have probably already stripped down to your cutoffs, fired up the ol' Cornballer, and watched every single episode of the new season. This week, I'd like to share my feelings about the newest season. I'm going to try to do this without giving away too much for those of you who might not have seen all the episodes yet (dummies).

First of all, I'd really like to watch them all again, because the jokes were all threaded so closely together that they were difficult to follow. It was so full of intricacies that it became a little convoluted. Part of what made seasons 1-3 so great was the ensemble cast. With interactions that were engaging and hilarious, and the characters weaving in and out of the episodes, you never got tired of any one character or wondered what others were up to. However, with this new format of focusing on one character per episode, and with very little screentime for ensembles, it ends up putting all the weight on one person at a time, and leaves the viewer feeling wistful for the dynamic of episodes past. This strange format probably resulted from the fact that it was difficult to get all the actors on the same schedule, so they had to get a little creative. Some scenes were filmed
using a green screen, but mostly they had to shoot the scenes with only one or two characters at a time. One of my favorite bits I missed in the new season was when the Bluths would get together for a family party, and it would end up being "one of the better ones:' The wall between Mexico and the US was a strange plot point, one that didn't really get better as the season progressed. What was up with George Sr.? It seemed like he was almost an entirely different character. Was that just me? Also, can we talk about Portia De Rossi's face? I've always thought she was a staggeringly beautiful actress, and didn't she go on some very publicized tirade about how good Ellen DeGeneres made her feel about herself? I don't think I'm alone when I say, "why, Portia? WHY?" It got better when she stopped wearing the wig, but still. .. Good God, woman. Overall, season 4 of Arrested Development ... wasn't bad. There were definitely some good bits, and it was nice to see the gang back together again ... even if they weren't back together again in the same room. To me, it seemed like the biggest issue was that the writers were too aware of what had made the show successful in the first place. They tried to turn it into a formula, and ended up creating a season that feels slightly pandering. Candy Crush Update: Level 169. I fear I may have reached the end of my abilities with this game, despite a successful week.

Bulleit, Reed's, and Five by Five When you love someone, there are some little things you just find dear. For example, someone I've loved for years recommended a cocktail to me, and it quickly became one of my favorites. I called him one night while he was hanging out in his bedroom in San Francisco, drinking a cocktail he was very proud of. By the time our conversation was over he had consumed at least three of these babies, and though his words may have been slightly slurred, they were still as lovely as ever: honest, real, and slightly inebriated. Do I talk a lot about getting drunk in this column? Yeah, well, it IS the Synthesis. I finally got the chance to taste the famous "Bulleit Bourbon and Reed's Extra Ginger Brew" cocktail. It tastes like something you'd pay 16 bucks for in the city. But if you make it at home, you're probably hovering right around four to five bucks a pop. You could keep it super simple with only Bulleit and Reed's Extra, but we recently had some fun tweaking it with orange zest and locallymade Aged Citrus Bitters from Five by Five Tonics. The Reed's is perfect because it has wonderfully bitey ginger flavor, and is sweetened with honey and pineapple juice for a great roundness that sugar alone just wouldn't offer. When you mix that with the fantastic flavor of Bulleit Bourbon made from limestone-filtered water, and aged in charred American oak barrels ...jeez. It's refreshing and sweet and punchy and great for summer. For a delicious twist to round it out, the Five by Five Aged Citrus Bitters-with their small-batch craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the flavor of aged tangerine peel-adds that high-end cocktail element. Finishing with fresh orange zest brings balance to the bitters and compliments the lemon and lime in the Reed's. Dang.
ICT
ICE
Here's the quick and dirty version:
1. Fill a pint glass halfway with ice Pour the Bulleit over ice until it just covers the top of the cubes Fill the glass the rest of the way with Reed's Extra Ginger Brew Add one or two dashes of Five by Five bitters (to taste) Stir Top with a bit of orange zest To class-up this cocktail a bit more, make it in a martini shaker and serve it in a martini glass rimmed with orange-infused sugar. To make this, you'll need: 1 large orange, or 2 smallish ones 2 cups sugar Remove the zest with a microplane or a citrus zester. Transfer the zest to a food processor, and add 1 cup of sugar. Pulse it for a couple of minutes until the zest has become fine and is fully incorporated into the sugar. Transfer to a large bowl and mix in the second cup of sugar. Spread the orange sugar on a baking pan, and let it sit at room temperature until dry (about 1 hour). I have a feeling this cocktail would go to new heights with hickory-smoked brown sugar and orange zest. Oh, fun in the kitchen! Enjoy!

Very few things in this world are more beautiful than human compassion. Whether you have survived cancer, know someone who is fighting cancer, lost a loved one to cancer, or simply want to quit hearing about cancer, the Relay for Life is a great opportunity to contribute to the cause of hope. A hugely inspiring group of people will be gathering at 10:00 am and running through the night to raise money toward a cure and lend support to an undeniably worthy cause. cancer.
The lineup for this show has so much going for it I can barely fit a word in edgewise. Kicking off at 9:30 pm, $5 will get you ska from Chico's own Brass Hysteria, multi-genre fed rock from San Jose's Ghost Town Hangmen, San Diego rockabilly trio Hard Fall Hearts, Living End tribute Longneck Congregation, and grimey Blues-Rock from Lush Baby. At less than $1 a band for these great musicians, it's pretty much a steal.

Sexy Sex Dear Balls: From a dude's perspective, what are your favorite sex toys and why? -Curious Sex toys? Ohh, you FANCY! You<l be surprised what a roaming finger can accomplish. No?
Do NOT surprise your partner with the Ass Hammer 3000 and expect it to go over well if it has not been previously discussed. Sex and sex play should be about the fun, romantic and lustful magic that happens between two (or more) persons. Take an hour to discuss your fantasies, and then go shopping together, either in a store or online. But talk about it, y'all!
It is really not possible for one "dude'' to
speak to the likes and desires of all mankind. Are we talking about sex toys to use on men? Women? A partner? Ourselves? I love the idea of sex toys, but have yet to find one that does a better job than my tongue. I suppose a high-quality vibrating dildo of NORMAL size can be fun to have in the bedside drawer, along with blindfolds or scarves to do some light bondage. It all dependswhat do you like? As with nearly all of my suggestions, it starts with a single point: communication. "Yes, some light anal play could spice things up" means start small, and explore your fantasies in a safe, non-judgmental setting. It does not mean "grab your socks and bite the pillow!"
Many avoid talking openly because of embarrassment or fear of being uncomfortable. Know what's more uncomfortable? Discovering the hard way that your lover has secretly picked up an inflatable pineapple. Someone is left terrified and crying and the other is out $50 and is likely looking for a new mate. Seriously, you're a grownup-talk to your partner(s) about what it is that THEY like, so they may ask what YOU like-then WOW go buy those things and GOLLY HOLY GOOD LAWD, SOO MUCH FILTHY FUN! WHEEEEE! Totally unrelated note: Costco's moist wipes are really worth having around.

Chico is an Art Center I was at a loss as to what should be covered this week, and was on the verge of devoting this week's column to praising the virtues of Pokemon and Tumblr, when I happened to walk past Chico Art Center. It's next to Empire Coffee, and part of the long building on Fifth and Orange that makes up the train station. Two bubbly little writing prompts popped off the gallery's doors and into my yellow pad! Pokemon will have to wait. Firstly, I'll describe what's going down in the gallery proper: lots of really great art, in all sorts of mediums. Who knew? I had wandered through the very spacious room for a few moments, and passingly admired about thirty great pieces, when it struck me that every piece was by the same person! There was so much work here, of so many different styles, from so many time periods: '60s, '80s, '90s ... quite impressive. The name listed on the tags was Betty Benson, a local personage who I'm beginning to suspect is a major fixture in the art scene here. Betty went to college here, taught college courses here, raised a family here, and conquered cancer here. She was also making art the entire time-I mean, creating is probably how she got through it all.
What I found most striking in this sixty-year collection of creation were her yarn pieces. One piece could have been an abstract watercolor painting, portraying many layers of feeling and color in autumnal greens and browns. As a painting it would've been alright, but it was made of yarn. It had dimension, and 1 depth, and texture, and it was fuzzy to the touch. Other pieces were these yarn ... constructions, I guess. They resembled hats, or octopi, or something an ancient forest nymph would make out of the roots of a petrified tree. Secondly, I'll rep Chico Art Center's first foray into the open community art challenge. Manas Gallery has been doing exhibitions like this for a while-one theme might be "keys"; you pay five bucks, you get a random key, you make art about it, it goes in the gallery that month. The Art Center's theme is a little more specific-and, dare I say, more challenging? The theme is "rock paper scissors": you can make anything, in any medium, and it will go in the exhibition, but it has to somehow include or allude to rocks, paper, and scissors. Work that imagination and drop your work off by this Saturday! Here's a feeder idea: A cat, on a rock, holding huge red scissors, wearing a paper hat. Howl is a biweekly column devoted to helping local artists/creators/performers get press. If you're ready to get to represented, email me.

Lisa Valentine EP Release Show With BOGG feat. Aubrey Debauchery & Katrina Rodriquez June 7, 8pm \ 1078 Gallery
It is a great time to
be a lover of live performance these days; our fair town of Chico is brimming with artistic talent. Music permeates the air yet again this upcoming Friday evening as local songstress Lisa Valentine and friends transform the 1078 Gallery into a jazzfilled cocktail lounge. The show is being held in support of the release of Valentine's debut EP, "Secret Lover." Notably, Ms. Valentine is the most recent winner of the annual "Celebration of the Song" contest sponsored by KZFR community radio and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, and she was chosen for the critic's choice CAMMIES award as this year's Best Female Vocalist. The takeaway message is that this woman can sing! Her compositions about love, loss, heartache and redemption, combine elements of folk, blues, jazz and soul, but the primary driving force behind the songs is Valentine's dexterous, emotive, and powerful voice. "Secret Lover" is the result of a successful, community-driven crowd-sourcing campaign. The seven song collection was recorded at the Origami Lounge here in Chico, and mastered at Sage Audio in Nashville, Tennessee. Friday night is the opportunity for the artist, and the community, to come together and celebrate
their collective achievement. For those who haven't pre-purchased the album, $10 will get you a copy. Joining Valentine to fill the evening with song are additional performers Katrina Rodriguez of the Rugs, and the jazz ensemble BOGG featuring Aubrey Debauchery. Together, Valentine, Debauchery, and Rodriguez make up the wondrous "Duffy's Sirens:' This will prove to be a lot of vocal talent assembled for an evening of merriment and musical entertainment, all for less than the cost of a movie ticket! Admission to the "Secret Lover" EP release party is $8. The show is all ages, but beer and wine will be available for guests 21 years of age and older. JUNE 3 - JUNE 9, 2013

HEAR THAT TRAIN
A COMIN' There's a good amount of music similar to Wayne Hancock's, but there aren't many musicians like him. He works in the traditional song structures of country music (the good kind), and you don't need your wits about you to understand the imagery and substance of his lyrics; however, for all of its simplicity, the music of Wayne "The Train'' Hancock transcends sheer expediency. The tone of his voice ranks with (and some say surpasses) Hank Williams'. The dynamics are unique and tasteful. His approach to touring and taking care of his musicians is selfless, humble and impressive. He's respected by many in the industry, and next Tuesday right here in Chico, you'll have a chance to find out why.
So I've been doing my best to stay sober, and I had some players in my band who had some drinking problems, and I got rid of all those guys. The audience seems to really like it.
Now, you've got a good head on your shoulders as far as putting a record together. Have you considered self-producing a record? The thing about having a good producer is that he can hear things that you can't hear. You know, I'm known for recording albums in about a day and a half, and after twenty takes or so, I start getting worn out on different ideas. Lloyd [Maines] is one of those guys who brings out the best in me. Two heads are always better than one.
Recently, The Train took some time out of his tour to chew the fat with Synthesis. He divulged some personal and musical tidbits that reveal why he's been a special icon in the country/juke-joint-swing scene for several decades. By the way, try to hear his words in a voice that's akin to the manager's from the Major League movies.
Your pockets have never been heavy. Tell me a little about the money aspect of your recent tours and your attitude about money in general. How important is it? Well, I'm never gonna be a millionaire. I still struggle day to day. I live in a trailer park. I always pay my band better. But things are still going good for me. I believe that if I take care of my band, then God'll take care of me.
What's new? Just got a new bass player, and I'm back to having a four-piece band again. What's the result of the change? The result is that I sound more like my old self. The guitar players are really good, and the bass player and I have been friends for damn near 30 years. You said you were tired of Austin and its cliques; what's your opinion of the California lifestyle, since you're gonna be coming to see us pretty soon? Well, California's got its cliques, too. But it's always a joy coming out to California. After you've been on the road for over 20 years, you pretty much have family and friends everywhere you go. I'm not gonna grill you on sobriety too much, but what's the road life been like since you curbed your drinking? Is it the same seeing your friends on the road? Is there any void that needs to be filled? When I first started drinking, I drank because it made me happy. And when I was depressed, I would drink trying to be happy. And as you know, that doesn't work out too well.

playing it upbeat. This gives the listener some kind of hope. It's real live blues, man. Thank god for African-Americans; if we didn't have those people, weCl have some real crappy music.
As far as the songwriting goes, do you feel like there's any clouds lifted, so to speak, as far as your ability to put together a song? No, not really. I write the lyrics and the chords together at the same time no different than I always have. When I write songs, I'm purging my soul. [optimistic sigh] You've got to be consistent with your songwriting; otherwise you'll lose your audience. Your audience makes you who you are. Well said. And as far as the performance, I like to play my songs like Bob Wills. He'd play sad songs and always be smiling and
What can the folks here in Chico expect at the show next week? Every show is different. We play enough on the road that we don't have to rehearse, so sometimes you'll see a show one night, and the next night it might be the same set list but a completely different show. We like to keep things off the sleeve; keep the audience guessing. And I feel like I was put here for one reason only, and that's to be an entertainer. Gonna get a little morbid on you, but what song would be most appropriately played at your funeral? [With absolutely no hesitation]: "In the Mood'.' I want it to be a big celebration. And which song do you wish you would've written? I wish I wrote the "Lovesick Blues:' Whoever originally wrote that song was pretty badass.

Reutews---Jessica Fichot Le Secret Self Produced
Trance
by Sara Calvosa
directed by Danny Boyle
French Elevator Music? I like to listen to music and imagine that it 's soundtracking my life at that moment. This album is the soundtrack to naps. Cutting to the chase here, Le Secret was nothing special. I don't know why! There are franchy songs, a jazzy clarinet, an accordion-it's like the best band idea that ever failed. On paper, it's everything I'd love in an album, but unfortunately it just didn't translate. Jessica Fichot, a native Parisian squeezebox player, attempts to fuse some gypsy jazz with lyrical French chansons (I know! Sounds awesome, right?) But when I think of gypsy music I think of full , robust, naughty debaucheries, wherein you don't necessarily need to know the language to get the gist of the song. I think of a large,
raucous band full of sly-eyed party animals singing fiery, punchy choruses. Fichot was more, "wee-waa wee-waa I play an accordion and I'm totally indie so I'm automatically rad! Macarons! " Anyway, she 's coming to Cafe Coda on June 10th and maybe she's better live? I haven't decided ifI 'm going or if I'm really that dedicated when it comes to trying to like all the franchy musics I can get my hands on. If you'd like to use this album as the soundtrack to a nap, or an anime flashback montage, or for the background to your next cat video, stop by my office and it's all yours.
Murder She Wrote Creator: Peter S. Fischer by Amy Olson
What's Hot Now: Murder, She Wrote This circa-1984 crime drama, or "crim dram" as we in the "biz" call it, is possibly the most important piece of television you' ll ever see. What would you do if everywhere you went, week after week, city after city, somebody was murdered? And worse, unfailingly, someone close to you was accused of that murder and had no alibi. You' d freak out, right? The nightmare scenario I just described is stone-cold reality for widow and mystery maven, Jessica Fletcher. While
people drop like Visine and accusations fly, Jessica never for a moment loses her shit. On the contrary, she faces every irate police detective and hysterical mistress with ultimate class as she gathers clues and trips up the culprits. Peppered with the vaguely familiar faces of every actor who ever worked in the ' 80s, and featuring a priceless crossover episode with the immortal Magnum PI. , this Netflix-streamable series is available 24/7 for your viewing pleasure and betterment as a human being.

by Shwan Ziad Trance, directed by Danny Boyle and starring James McAvoy, tantalizes as much as it tells. As an employee at a London auction-house, a fetcher of millions for art masterpieces, McAvoy's character undergoes a shattering psychosis when the heist of a Goya painting goes awry. Haunted and spellbound as the painting itself, the movie relentlessly shifts the boundaries of time and truth, with memory and the mind's power to reshape memory on opposite sides of the same membrane.
Like James Stewart in Vertigo-one of the greatest acting performances ever of a psyche in duress-Trance depends upon McAvoy being able to pull you into his tragedy. Underappreciated despite his fame, McAvoy acts with such subtle, variegated emotion that one can take him for granted .. He carries Trance with a combination of vulnerability, violence, and compulsion in his character's attempt to solve the puzzle of his memory loss. There are moments when he could burst from frustration, others when he is helplessly sedate. McAvoy has matured since his breakthrough in The Last King of Scotland, gaining a command that was also on display in his performance in The Last Station. Innocence-meets-experience is certainly McAvoy's forte; his aqua-mist eyes are capable of a tremulous intensity.
Aside from some outright silly gore, the direction of Trance has a real panache to it, even if it is unstable. The soundtrack and lighting are particularly poignant, contrasting the grey-lit, traditional architecture of London facades with the modern glare of streamlined apartments, messaging gadgets, and a neon nightclub. Visually, it's an ambitious movie, cutting and connecting images from past, present and future without explanation-and trusting the images to tell the story, even while dislocating the viewer's senses. Yet stock movie-mechanisms (heist, amnesia, hypnosis) push the narrative along in the tradition of a Hitchcock thriller. The script may have too many narrative twists, but it nonetheless retains a high suspense; I can't say if a second viewing will allow it to make conclusive sense. The movie as a whole is a kind of foreboding hallucination, yet an intensely dramatic three-actor play emerges between McAvoy's broken self, Vincent Casell's criminal (interestingly toned down from the tyrannical ballet teacher of Black Swan), and Rosario Dawson's therapist (tepid and mechanical when she's intended as seductive), with each of them bound in their own way by the most primal of human motives. Focus more on your family this week, especially siblings. The new moon on Saturday will open up lines of communication and will help you to appreciate the environment around you. It's easy to be clannish and insular. Open up to other people's ideas and see how working as a team takes you further.
