HAECO Group Chief Commercial Officer Richard Kendall welcomes the good news

n Rolls-Royce PLC and HAECO Group, a global leader in aircraft engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), have announced that HAECO will become RollsRoyce’s principal provider of global on-wing and in-field services for large civil aeroengines. This will enable Rolls-Royce to further enhance its customer

experience by providing airlines with greater capacity and capability through HAECO’s global network. support for aeroengines. Lee McConnellogue, RollsRoyce, Senior Vice President – Services Operations, Civil Aerospace, said: “We welcome this agreement with HAECO. It will allow us to provide our customers with greater on-wing services support across our global network at a time when many airlines are seeing their fleets return to more robust levels of activity. Partnerships such as these help us help our customers as they recover from the impact of Covid and continue to grow into the future.” Angus Barclay, HAECO Group Director Components & Engine Services, said: “This agreement builds upon the long-standing, close relationship between RollsRoyce and HAECO for engine MRO services. We look forward to supporting Rolls-Royce and their customers with our global onwing and in-field services.” www.haeco.com

Olivier Legrand, President and CEO of Revima Group said, “This renewed authorized facility repair agreement highlights the strong relationship between Pratt & Whitney Canada and Revima, which goes back to the early 1990s for APUs and even the 60s when we were repairing main engines. Along this agreement, we have in 2020 and 2021 further strengthened our long relationship with Pratt & Whitney with end-

of-life authorized repair facility agreements and have capability for virtually every APU model in their portfolio, from small APUs used in military and regional applications, to single aisle and large commercial APU applications such as the A320, B787, B747 and A380. Bamboo Airways buys Boeing 787 support n Continuing its rapid development despite the global crisis, the dynamic young Vietnamese operator has entrusted AFI KLM E&M with a support program for its GEnx engines, coupled with a first C check on its Dreamliners fleet. Both contracts came into effect in early October. A Bamboo Airways Boeing 787 has already undergone a C-Check at AFI KLM E&M’s Amsterdam base, followed by the removal of a first GEnx engine. The partners’ objective is to capitalize on these scheduled maintenance visits to optimize logistics and TATs during engine shop visits. This is a new mark of confidence in AFI KLM E&M from Bamboo Airways. The MRO has been accompanying the Vietnamese airline since its founding in 2018. At the end of 10

2020, Bamboo Airways joined the 787 Operators Community led by AFI KLM E&M and has since benefited from full components support for its fleet, including repairs, logistics, the provision of an advanced stock at its Hanoi base and access to spare parts pools located around the world. “We are pleased to continue to build on our trust-based relationship with Bamboo Airways,” said Ton Dortmans, EVP KLM Engineering & Maintenance. “Over the past months we have worked closely together to address the crisis and implement all necessary adapted solutions. Today, we are more than ever committed to helping Bamboo Airways prepare for the restart of international traffic in the best possible conditions, and to support its strong growth

ambitions in terms of fleet expansion and the opening of new routes, especially to Europe”. Nguyen Minh Khoa, Director of Leasing and Procurement at Bamboo Airways, commented: “As airline-MRO, the AFI KLM E&M teams in Amsterdam have been very responsive and attentive to our needs, both technically and in terms of preparing to welcome our teams and aircraft. The expertise of an MRO with a thorough knowledge of the 787 fleets is of great significance for Bamboo Airways to enhance the operational efficiency and superb services of outstanding quality, contributing to the commercial success of our expansive flight network from Vietnam to the most demanding aviation markets in the world.” www.airfranceklm.com

CONFERENCE

Bouncing back? The “new” normal could have highs and lows as supply chains and labour issues dog management

The conference was well attended over the 3 days of content 14

T

here are bottlenecks in terms of human resources and maintenance is labour intensive, HAECO Group chief commercial officer, Richard Kendall, told the Ramping Up and Ongoing Challenges session that kicked off the MRO Europe 2021 Conference. Despite Asia’s reputation as an economic juggernaut, Kendall saw that region as still looking down, with Hong Kong traffic down 94 per cent on 2019 levels. Air France-KLM engineering and maintenance executive vice president, Anne Brachet, said the key question was about the engines, is there going to be a big wave of engines or not? She added that for the long term, “we feel very comfortable”. Short-haul from an Air France-KLM perspective is doing better every day. “Each time constraints are replaced, we see a big increase in the bookings,” Brachet explained. But increases in bookings means more flights, and that ultimately means more maintenance. “While we haven’t laid anyone off, there has been attrition and attracting people back to MRO,” Kendall said, pointing out that having the resources for levels of maintenance activity seen in the past is a struggle. Virgin Atlantic engineering and maintenance vice president and engineering director, Phil Wardlaw. said: “We haven’t seen the worst of the supply chain issues. When we get into the engines, I think the supply chain will really matter.” Virgin has 70 per cent of its network across North America, and only 10 per

cent of its fleet has not been activated. Wardlaw explained that what helped was the reopening of the USA in November. “It gave us a chance to get our manpower back in and retrained, and any skills fade removed from the system,” he said. Skills and training are all important for the incoming workforce, and Brachet told the audience that the industry needed to demonstrate to young people that they should work in aviation. “We are working on digital tools to convince young people to come to our industry. There are still a lot of people leaving the industry,” she explained. AAR repair and engineering services senior vice president Brian Sartain admitted that his company had “a lot laid off and we have a very aged workforce of maintenance workers, and they took a package and never returned to the industry.” He added that a lot of workers were lured away from aviation. Despite AAR investing in the workforce it had left and reaching out for recruitment, it still saw a net decrease in staff. A solution to better training was an investment in augmented reality, “to become more efficient, but it’s also become an attraction,” Sartain explained. Yet still, AAR is short of people. While MRO firms struggle with labour and supply chain issues, the airlines want flexibility and cost reductions. Air FranceKLM’s Brachet explained that airlines needed an industry of flexibility for the future. Part of this is the uncertainty of the worldwide recovery so flexibility, and cost reductions, are key. Kendall saw a problem with people

costs not going down. Labour costs will continue to go up and material costs will continue to go up. “We’re seeing unprecedented wage pressure, it’s to do with those people who decided to retire during the pandemic and not come back. Wages have increased substantially,” Kendall said. He added that a lot of the firm’s airline partners are expecting HAECO to maintain a certain level of capacity because the airlines could need that capacity in the near term, but they do not want to contract for all that capacity right now. What the fleets will look like, as airlines whose activation levels are far below Virgin Atlantic’s, is another big unknown. Brachet asked the question, what will be the balance between new and old aircraft, and the answer she gave, and the other panel members agreed: “We are all 100 per cent sure we don’t know.” For Virgin Atlantic, it has Airbus A350 joining the fleet soon, but the airline, Wardlaw said, slowed some fleet renewal, but it will still certainly happen. Like so many airlines, when Covid struck, Virgin grounded its four-engine aircraft. The airlines’ fleets could be single-aisle heavy as Sartain pointed out that with Covid the planned narrowbody fleet divestitures did not happen. Kendall said that his firm is still retaining capability on “those old aircraft because they aren’t retiring soon”. Brachet said that very recently, Air France-KLM was “seeing signals that the airlines need their engines. We expect a big recovery.” n 15

VIP LOUNGE

Connections are everything and when you are a buyer with a strong market presence it makes sense to maximise your network.

T

he VIP Club Lounge, open to attendees with Airline VIP status and open during exhibition hours, provided select seats and tables, free drinks and a quieter zone where the conversation could flow. Summit Aerospace was the VIP Club Lounge sponsor for MRO Europe 2021 and have taken the sponsorship for 2022, when it takes place in London, and for 2023 when the show returns to Amsterdam. Summit Aerospace serves more than one hundred clients a year worldwide. It helps its customers reduce their repair and overhaul maintenance costs with innovative solutions. Summit employees are dedicated to continuously improving the quality, value, and, above all, the safety of all. Customers could have a drink in the VIP Club Lounge and take the time to relax or schedule a meeting. At the heart of the VIP Club Lounge is the idea of partnership, and Summit works in partnership with its customers by continuously integrating its services within the wider air transport industry. Summit manages the growth of each of its businesses by investing in all aspects of its services. Investing time is something that can be done in the VIP Club Lounge. “It’s been excellent. We love the concept of the VIP Club Lounge, and we intend

to be the sponsor now and for a while,” Summit Aerospace Chief Operating Officer Kent Kendrick said, beverage in hand, in the VIP Club Lounge. A lounge is where long-term relationships can be formed. For Summit, partnering the firm’s companies with its customers is the vision. This is done by creating the best possible relationship, thinking of the long-term relationship from the moment the customer decides to put their trust in Summit services. And that can begin at MRO Europe, in the VIP Club Lounge. “It’s been great; we’ve made a lot of

“We’ve met a lot of new people here, even met some people from the States who can give us business, we met them here, so it’s really worked out very well” contacts. The VIP Club Lounge has been excellent. So much so we have secured it for next year,” Kendrick added. The concept of the VIP Club Lounge tallies with Summit’s values. Be easy and simple to do business with. Form partnerships to ensure the delivery of a seamless and stress-free service. Always consider the complete journey from the moment the customers send in their repairs. Invest in time to install the latest equipment, more than any

other MRO company in the world, to make customers’ repairs safer and more reliable. Introducing state-of-the-art technology throughout each Summit facility is an ongoing process, just like those introductions that can be had in a VIP Club Lounge. “It’s been a great [MRO Europe] show. It’s one of my favourites for sure. For us personally, yes [to making connections]. You get to meet them as they walk in the door. They come up wanting to come in, so it’s a great opportunity for us, so we’re very happy with it. We’ve had a lot of contacts come in,” Kendrick enthused. What is better than open and honest conversation in the relaxed surroundings of a VIP Club Lounge? Aim high is another Summit value, tempered by knowing that it is key to always being realistic about what can be achieved. “We’re ready to go,” said Kendrick. “Summit Aerospace had no slow down whatsoever through the Covid [pandemic]. We’ve met a lot of new people here, even met some people from the States who can give us business, we met them here, so it’s really worked out very well.” Summit Aerospace is about working together, a people business, talking to the customers and more importantly, listening to the customers. Summit aims to develop a partnership approach and what could be more appropriate than that than a VIP Club Lounge. “Simplest way I can summarize this year’s MRO is: Quality over Quantity,” said Summit Aerospace Vice President Sales and Marketing, Alain Torres. n

The customer’s needs are always met at FL Technics

FL Technics is top quality The high standards of certified quality management systems have been demonstrated by FL Technics MRO service

L

eading maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services provider FL Technics (FLT), and a family member of Avia Solutions Group, has successfully been in receipt of the Certificate for Continuous Airworthiness and Technical Asset Management Services, awarded by the Bureau Veritas. The FL Technics Quality Management System meets the high requirements of EN 9110:2018 and EN ISO 9001:2015 standards. FL Technics Quality Management System is designed to meet the demands of the company’s global onestop-shop MRO service. With over 20 years of operations, FLT has 1,200 people working in Indonesia and in Lithuania and across a network 30

of 40-line stations worldwide. An EASA Part-145, Part-M, Part-147, Part-21 and FAA 145 certified company, FLT can carry out A-, C- and D-Checks. As the largest independent line maintenance network, customers can be assured that despite these turbulent times in aviation, FL Technics standards and the quality of service are designed to ensure the smooth continuity of business worldwide. That reach only became wider with the incorporation in the last few months of Wright International into FL Technics and into FL Technics subsidiary Storm Aviation acquiring Manchesterbased Chevron Technical Services and Prestwick-based Chevron Aircraft Maintenance.

These companies will also meet the EN 9110:2018 and EN ISO 9001:2015 standards which define FL Technics capabilities to match the growing needs of the market; including those of major players such as Airbus, Boeing, and other leading stakeholders. Whether it is base maintenance, line maintenance, engines, airframes and materials, aircraft engineering, design and production, technical training and logistics, the company’s competencies across this industrial breadth have been confirmed by this certification. GO LIVE

Going forward with Go Live!

Go Live! was well attended throughout MRO Europe 2021

Find the best of the innovative solutions the industry has to offer in bite size presentations at the Go Live! Theater during MRO Europe 2021 in Amsterdam

T

he Go Live! Theater successfully returned to MRO Europe this year with a roster of not to be missed expert speakers. This year the messages were connectedness, supply 32

chains, sustainability, synthetic fuels and blockchain finally coming of age. While Covid is an economically significant but relatively temporary impact lasting a few years, climate change is here for the very long term and becoming a carbon-neutral

industry will be aviation’s contribution to staving off the worst mother nature can throw at humanity. For this reason, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a dropin fuel solution that does not require the entirely new infrastructure required for hydrogen or hybrid electric. That was one part of the message about SAF from Pratt & Whitney (P&W) fellow of sustainable propulsion, Sean Bradshaw. “We will work with key stakeholders to make SAF is there

Expertise was on display at the Go Live! Theater

in the future,” he said. He described how P&W’s Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine could extract additional efficiencies. “We are working on advanced game-changing technologies to reduce CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions and other emissions even further,” he added. The industry is expecting airlines to use SAF in blends with jet fuel to reduce, over time, the CO2 emissions. The blend of jet fuel to SAF can be as low as 10 per cent and ultimately up to 100 per cent SAF. “We’ll be ready for the next step of SAF when blends approach 10 per cent. We’ve been testing our engines on SAF for over 15 years on various blends from zero to 100 per cent across our wide array of product families. Our engines will be compatible at blends of 50 per cent and eventually up to 100 per cent.” The standards organization ASTM began work on a new industry standard of 100 per cent SAF blend process and that standard is likely to take up to five years to become reality, according to Bradshaw. From a sustainability perspective, SAF is still small volume with significantly less than one per cent of global fuel demand. President Joseph Biden’s SAF challenge aims to have production of three billion gallons of SAF by 2030, but this is only 10 per cent of preCovid airline jet fuel consumption. Sustainability was at the heart of the Go Live presentation by Dubai Aerospace Enterprise engineering arm, Joramco, chief executive officer, Fraser Currie. “Sustainability is what an MRO needs, if you can’t sustain quality, you can’t sustain your customers. You need to understand

your risks. Transformation, sustainability it works, but you have to work hard at it,” he told the audience. “The key is planning, organization, strong leadership, communication and being very honest with yourself.” An MRO such as Joramco is like a large factory and while the leased aircraft returns kept Joramco staff employed the

“Sustainability is what an MRO needs, if you can’t sustain quality, you can’t sustain your customers. You need to understand your risks. Transformation, sustainability it works, but you have to work hard at it” levels of work during the pandemic were not what the company had previously enjoyed. “We are now seeing recovery in the market,” he explained. “What kept us strong through Covid was our capacity and ability from 737 classics to 787 and A321NEOs; that is what kept us strong. We could cover what our customers needed.” Connecting with customers and suppliers is key, but what does connectedness really mean? Buffalo, New York-based AireXpert chief executive officer Andy Hakes said: “We rarely hear the word connected, and it really matters. Being linked to 1,800 people on LinkedIn doesn’t really mean anything. It’s about making sure everyone is on the same page all the time.” In Hakes’ view, connectedness is people actively collaborating together with the same goals.

Pratt & Whitney Fellow Sean Bradshaw spoke

What enables control is the integration that delivers the data and analytics’ insights that deliver efficiency. When a business does not have “visibility about what is going on around its networks and systems, we have problems working out the root cause of the problems,” Hakes added. Connections is at the heart of blockchain, a digital ledger that is distributed making its data resilient and automatically updated to all parties involved. SITA business innovation senior product manager, Pierre-Yves Benain, promoted the benefits of blockchain for end-to-end automation, traceability, and transparency to the Go Live! audience. “We are innovating new solutions for the industry” he said. He pointed out that aviation has $50 billion in global parts inventory and 60 per cent of the cost of that is for engines and components. The human error costs related to the management of that vast inventory are not insignificant. Benain explained that SITA was invited by a group of aviation companies to investigate the application of blockchain to solve a range of challenging industry problems. The criteria for success included, end to end process automation with complete visibility, data confidentiality, compliance with industry standards, independent auto-reconciliation and asset value protection for the end user. Benain said: “We believe we are the only ones to make it right [blockchain for aviation].” The key to unlocking blockchain, Benain explained, was that the supply chain needs to adopt it. n 33

HANGAR EQUIPMENT

Hangar Equipment & GSE Pavilion First introduced at MRO Europe 2019 the Hangar Equipment & GSE Pavilion was back again for 2021

F

rom engine stands to ground support equipment, airframe and engine tooling, docking and access platforms, test equipment and safety equipment, visitors to the Hangar & GSE pavilion were able to find suppliers of all kinds of specialist equipment that would be found in an aircraft maintenance hangar and much more. 34

That much more can include automated testers for all types of aircrafts. Entire ranges of pitot testers, bonding and loop testers and battery testers for original equipment manufacturers, operators and maintenance centers are available to assist aviation manufacturing and maintenance. Hangar pavilion exhibitor ATEQ Aviation is a worldwide manufacturer of automated testers for all types of aircrafts.

ATEQ has developed a complete range of products and customized hardware and software solutions, adapted to all industry requirements: pneumatic, electric and electronic safety testing systems. With a presence in 40 countries, ATEQ is servicing more than 5,000 customers worldwide. ATEQ engineers sell and service the aviation product line to more than 1,000 customers. More than 20 engineers work to improve the measurement quality of ATEQ’s systems. Since the concept of the aviation division, ATEQ has introduced its most advanced technological features to

worldwide customers. Cobra Systems has been an ATEQ company since 2018, and it also manufactures pitot-static adapters, accessories and covers. Another company with many years’ experience is Rubb Buildings. It has been designing, manufacturing and constructing high quality, code compliant, engineered fabric tensioned hangars and shelters for more than 40 years. Rubb’s semipermanent and permanent aircraft hangars offer an alternative solution to traditional hangars. Rubb Aviation has a track record in delivering fast, flexible and cost-effective aircraft hangars to aviation and military organisations to protect their planes and helicopters. The hangars are designed to lower project costs, overall structure weight and construction times. Rubb’s clients include easyJet, Lufthansa, Flybe and British Airways. While the hangars are built to last, they are also fully relocatable or extendable to meet changing needs. Custom-made aircraft hangars is Schwarzmann’s forte. A central European steel structure engineering and manufacturing company, it has produced structures for more than 25 years in various industries, including prefabricated aircraft maintenance hangars. Schwarzmann’s hangars are designed from the outset in close cooperation with the client, as the type of aircraft that will be stored or serviced in the hangar dictates the dimensions and equipment of the facility. The purpose or use determines the various properties of the hangars, such as

construction materials, door dimensions, insulation, and accessories, for example mechanical and electrical installations. Aircraft hangars are designed, manufactured, and installed as steel structures covered with insulation panels, or where internal temperature control is not required, PVC membranes. Due to the demanding service activities as well as sensitive and expensive spare parts, hangars for aircraft maintenance and storage

“Rubb Aviation has a track record in delivering fast, flexible and cost-effective aircraft hangars to aviation and military organisations to protect their planes and helicopters. The hangars are designed to lower project costs, overall structure weight and construction times” usually require a controlled environment with a constant temperature. As such the building needs to be isolated and have a built-in heating and ventilation system. A maker of inflatable aircraft maintenance shelter solutions is J.B. Roche (MFG), and it has been providing these structures for more than 25 years. Without the requirements for foundations, J. B. Roche’s large-scale hangars can be classified as temporary facilities. The main benefit of a temporary building is that it does not require a construction permit. These large-scale

hangars can be quickly deployed, and their flexible size can fit any aircraft. The heavy-duty design makes the large-scale hangars good for all aircraft maintenance and repair and for aircraft or helicopter storage. The firm’s IglooMX range of shelters are deployed globally by OEMs, MROs, airlines and aircraft-on ground teams to carry out maintenance tasks in a safe and controlled working environment. Another company with decades of experience is Finnish firm Best-Hall. It produces fabric structures for storage and maintenance areas for aircraft. The dimensioning of Best-Hall aviation hangars is performed according to the equipment used and stored in them, to provide sufficient space. Special doors increase the functionality of the building to fit large aeroplanes inside. The building’s size is also designed according to the size of aircraft being stored or maintained inside it as well as the equipment that will be operated there. The structure can be equipped with very large doors for the purposes of transporting equipment easily. And there is a range of service doors, sliding doors and roll-up doors with suitable options for personnel and service vehicles. The MRO Europe 2021 Hangar Equipment & GSE Pavilion showcased hangar builders, hangar outfitters, ground service equipment providers, an electric and remote-controlled tug maker and a drone inspection specialist. It was a strong line up to a welcome addition to the MRO Europe exhibition. n 35

Industry 4.0 is the network the industrial world is moving towards, and ISYBOT (French pavilion) designs business-to-business collaborative robots to assist operators in performing their tasks. ISYBOT is at the heart of Industry 4.0, improving the productivity of manual operations. The first applications in production are related to sanding and polishing or surface treatment for Airbus and Safran. ISYBOT is an interactive solution that relieves the operator and increases productivity. Mainblades inspection offers drone inspection of aircraft with a fully automated solution. Every aircraft type, whether indoor or outdoor, the drone can provide full dent-and-buckle damage reporting. Using key robotics technology for localization, mapping, navigation, planning and the best sensors in the market Mainblades

provides an industrial inspection drone with the equivalent of eyes and a brain for fast, safe and easier maintenance. Different types of robots can use a sensor developed by NEDAERO (Netherlands Pavilion), which created its special sensor with its Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) Program. The FOG sensor is suitable for flight stabilization and attitude control of aircraft, helicopters, drones and missiles. NEDAERO specializes in MRO and the distribution of components and systems for civil and military aircraft and helicopters. NEDAERO manufactures new parts for Airbus and Lockheed Martin.

“Over time, jet engines are subject to a loss of performance... Aiir has developed an Artificial Intelligence system for visual inspection which can overcome human weaknesses that lead to missed problems ” Donecle (French pavilion) offers an automated aircraft inspection solution combining a 100 per cent automated drone with advanced image analysis algorithms. The technology enables aircraft inspections to be completed up to 10 times faster than normal. Supporting applications include lightning strikes, GVI, regulatory markings and paint quality checks. This solution helps optimizing maintenance activities, reducing the inspection time to less than an hour. It automatically analyses damages on the aircraft structure and generates inspection reports to improve traceability. Another type of automation is aiding

jet engine inspections. Aiir Innovations (Netherlands pavilion) is an Artificial Intelligence startup that focuses on the automation of jet engine inspections. Over time, jet engines are subject to a loss of performance. This can be due to external factors such as foreign object damage, or internally generated causes such as wear and tear, overheating, erosion, corrosion, etc. In the engine upkeep cycle, visual inspections of the rotors play an important, even critical, role. Aiir has developed an Artificial Intelligence system for visual inspection which can overcome human weaknesses that lead to missed problems. All the data that can be generated by automated inspections need to be analyzed. The Aviation Academy (Netherlands pavilion) is part of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and its offers in-company master classes and applied research in the field of ‘Data Analytics in MRO Processes’, ‘Advanced Maintenance Technologies’ and ‘Human Factors & Safety’. The Aviation Academy provides the current and next generation of professionals with the skills they need to meet the international aviation challenges of the next 10-15 years. At the regional pavilions, a mix of MRO excellence can be found, from high tech to dependable processes tried and tested across a wide range of aircraft types. For highlighting a businesses presence in a particular nation or region, the pavilions provide a one stop-shop for that company seeking MRO services and at this year’s MRO Europe, the winners are French, Dutch and Floridian. 37
