YUTING HU’S PORTFOLIO I am tremendously interested in the arts. Architecture is one of the most magical art forms, which can be used as a tool to influence people. For me, architecture is not a designed construction. Nor is it about architects’ subjective emotions. It embraces the whole society and impacts people’s daily life and their different cultural background. Architecture is also considered as a documentary material, which records every change and turning point of human history. Beneath the lines and dots weave the simplicity for living; between the surfaces and floors pile the hope for the future; with the ideas and schemes bring the care for each individual. In Syracuse, I hope to figure out how architecture impacts daily life and culture; specifically, I want to know whether they can impact change.
For my portfolio, I select a piece of animation work by pen and ink, three pieces of portrait, three pieces of sketching still life, a piece of sketching the landscape, a watercolor work of landscape, two works of the animals by Canvas with Acrylic Paints, and two 3-dimensional works respectively by paper card, plastic, wood sticks and strings.
Cat Man Pen and Ink
Finished on my own
16x20’’
I create the image of the cat man to indicate that the day has eyes and the night has ears. What we have done will eventually appear.
SELF-PORTRAIT1 Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Done on my own
18x24’’
My inspiration comes from the aura of various colors. The cold and warm tones around impose my feelings and emotion. Instead of awaiting my doom, I choose to fight them back.

SELF-PORTRAIT2 Black Charcoal
Done on my own
8x10’’
Between the contrast of black and white I find out the grey area which bestows me the power to prevent myself from getting extremes.
OLD MAN Ink
Finished in school
16x20’’
Impressed by the trace of years and aging on my Art Teacher, I adopt the monochrome to imprint the destined gift of the time and illustrate the dusky sorrow for the fading youth.
PROCESS OF EATING APPLE Sketching
Done on my own
16x20’’
While eating an apple, I always think of How Long Will the Full Moon Appear. The poem written by Su Shi, the famous litterateur in Song Dynasty:The moon may wax and wane; people come and go.And the apple will never return to the original.
POT AND PEAR Sketching
Done in school
18x24’’
I choose a two-handle pot and a pear and place them unattached.By sketching the two substances, I want to express the idea that though being grouped together, things can be actually different in inherent quality and nature.
SET OF STILL LIFE
Sketching
Done on my own
11x14’’
This is the sketching work about the setting I have been placing for a dozen times. My intention with this combination of random objects was to make people feel the importance of balance.
Landscape1
Watercolor
Done on my own
11x14’’
While visiting the hometown in my country, I saw this old Chinese house. On the green-glazed roof and white walls carved the wisdom of the ancients. The chilly breeze blew on a cloudy day. So dim and dense; so dull and damp.
LANDSCAPE2 Sketching
Down in school
12x16’’
Strolling around the narrow alleys in the Chinese countryside, I was surprised by The close distance between the old buildings which didn’t feel depressing at all.Instead, the broken eaves, the ground with emerald mosses, and the one-arm-long spaceReveal the intimate relationship among people, the environment and the building.
Lizard Canvas with Acrylic Paints
Done on my own
11x14’’
Fortunes change with dizzy abruptness. In the face of the changing future, I envy the chameleon’s innate talent of blending itself into every possible environment. But for what is worth, is it better to become invisible by becoming the same as the crowd?Or should we just play by our own rules no matter how starkly we act?
SHARKS Canvas with Acrylic Paints
Done on my own
11x14’’
I seldom visited the aquarium because I can’t bear watching the marine lives suffer. I choose to paint the vague and pale images of sharks to show What people see in the huge glass cabinet is not the dangerous and beautiful creatureBut the restless and lonely specimens imprisoned in the artificial sea.
ASSEMBLING HOUAE Paper card and Plastic
Done in school
15x15x15cm
This is a project to design a building assembled by 27 rooms, each of which has dierent designs and is linked together with spiral stairs. I design this house with the inspiration of a magic cube, which reflects the complex intercommunication of each house in the same building and community.

STRAIGHT CURVE Wood Sticks and String
Done on my own
15x15x27cm
I use the wood sticks to make a frame of a triangular prism, on which I tie the straight lines to create the two curved surfaces. In this work, I hope to express the idea that too much rigidity will break while flexibility embraces the strongest power that sustains the structure.
