The Texas Southern University Staff Council (TSUSC) exists as a positive collective voice to foster a spirit of unity by encouraging the exchange of ideas among staff, faculty and students in keeping with the mission of Texas Southern University. The Staff Council promotes recognition of staff contributions to the mission of Texas Southern University, and recommends individuals to serve on committees where policies and procedures affecting staff will be discussed. The Staff Council will keep all staff informed and in turn keep the President advised of needs and interests of the Staff on University issues and activities. The Staff Council will always seek to promote a positive and collaborative work environment that is committed to assessing, prioritizing, and communicating Staff needs.

See you at the Game! TSU staff expressed interest in attending University sporting events, at the Town Hall Meeting held September 26, 2018. GUESS WHAT! You asked and you received! Courtesy of President Lane and Kevin Granger, Interim Vice President of Athletics, TSU staff members were eligible to receive free tickets to four home football games. TSU Staff Council is pleased this initiative, shaped during the Town Hall Meeting, came to fruition and was available for staff members. We, in Staff Council, look forward to more morale boosting incentives such as this, in the future.

Get Involved! Staff Council General Meetings are open meetings. Staff are welcome and encouraged to attend. Meetings occur the second Wednesday of each month in Hannah Hall Room 129.

Standing Committees (Comités permanents) Public Relations/ Communications Committee: This committee works with the appropriate University offices and/or news services to foster Staff pride and publicize Staff Council activities to the Texas Southern University community. Santa’s Elves Come to TSU TSU Staff Council organized a Toy Drive with proceeds going to W. R. Banks, Parent-Child Learning Land and TSU Charter School on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Many staff members came out to support this event benefitting 100 children. Delighted faces filled 6

the MLK Center Auditorium as staff served as Santa’s elves. They directed gleeful children to the brightly adorned Christmas tree where their gifts were located. Music filled the room as staff engaged the waiting children with Christmas sing-along songs.
TSU staff played an important role in helping to provide these children with an extra helping of Holiday Cheer! A big Thank You to all TSU Staff who participated in this event! TSU Staff Council appreciates all of Y-O-U!
Los duendes de Santa vienen a TSU El Consejo del personal de TSU organizó una Recolección de juguetes con los ingresos destinados a W. R. Banks, Parent-Child Learning Land y TSU Charter School el miércoles 19 de diciembre de 2018. Muchos miembros del personal participaron para apoyar este evento y beneficiaron a 100 niños. Carita encantadas llenaron el auditorio del Centro MLK mientras el personal servía como los duendes de Santa. Dirigieron a los niños alegres al árbol de

Town Hall Meeting Recap TSU Staff Council held its first Town Hall Meeting, Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Education Building Auditorium, with an audience of over 300 TSU staff members. The overall purpose of the meeting was to provide staff across the University an opportunity to have a dialogue with Dr. Lane. TSU Staff Council chair, Melanie Jackson, opened the meeting and welcomed all in attendance. She then turned the meeting over to President Lane, who shared important University news and information on a wide variety of topics, including: 1) The (5) Points of Vision and its correlation to University staff and the staff’s significance in achieving each concept; 2) The President’s Council on Equity and the relevance of this council to staff; 3) The need to complete the mandatory online trainings and how non-compliance affects the University as a whole; 4) Moving of the Title IX office directly under his leadership; 5) The one-time bonus; and 6) The hiring of the new Sr. Associate Vice President of Human Resources. Afterwards, Dr. Lane opened the floor for a lengthy questions and answers period. Some questions raised included: Why is Hannah Hall on Lock-down? Can we create a Tuition Reimbursement program for staff? Can staff members receive complimentary tickets to athletics events and the recreation center? Can the 4-day workweek be extended? Decrease in Parking Rates? One concern staff expressed was the lack of confidentiality in HR, 10

specifically, can we get something in place for a confidential barrier for grievances, cannot trust HR. To which resounding applause erupted. Dr. Lane addressed this concern by informing the audience, he was aware of the need to change leadership in Human Resources and he impressed upon the new Senior Vice President the need to rebuild trust and confidentiality in that area. Many in the audience expressed their satisfaction with this change through more handclapping and verbal expressions of gratitude. Staff were pleased with the personal discourse with Dr. Lane and the commitment from Staff Council to address the needs for staff at Texas Southern University. As staff left the meeting, a graband-go style lunch awaited each person in attendance, which left many satisfied with the overall experience. Resumen de la reunión del ayuntamiento El Consejo del Personal de TSU celebró su primera reunión del Ayuntamiento, el miércoles 26 de septiembre de 2018, a las 11 a.m. en el Auditorio del Edificio de Educación, con una audiencia de más de 300 miembros del personal de TSU. El propósito general de la reunión fue brindar al personal de la Universidad la oportunidad de dialogar con el Dr. Lane. Algunas de las preguntas que se plantearon fueron: ¿Por qué Hannah Hall está bloqueada? ¿Podemos crear un programa de reembolso de matrícula para el personal? ¿Pueden los
miembros del personal recibir boletos de cortesía para los eventos deportivos y el centro de recreación? ¿Se puede extender la semana laboral de 4 días? Disminución en las tarifas de estacionamiento? Una de las preocupaciones expresadas por el personal fue la falta de confidencialidad en los RR.HH., específicamente, podemos poner algo en el lugar para una barrera confidencial para las quejas, no podemos confiar en los RR.HH.
