RWANDA RESILIENT REGENERATIVE CITY
The Third Industrial Revolution is on its way and with it will come dramatic changes in the practice of architecture. Moving of building materials and products around the globe as we do now will become much lessncommon as technology facilitates the local fabrication of goods. This would benefit landlocked countries where importation is especially impractical.Vice versa it will encourage country such as Rwanda to utilize its local timber in architecture, at the same time increasing its competiveness of local economies.
By inducing afforestation in the underused urban area to replace imported construction with locally made CLT architecture. By utilize the state of art of Lignor’s Cross Laminated Strand Timber (CLSTTM) with a new CLT construction system, the forest to urban fabric ratio would be controlled to the minimum while accommodating the growing population with vast urban greenspace. Ultimately,, instead of being built under enormous carbon footprint, Kigali would be city of carbon storage instead.
New CLT construction system is designed
1.The brick system will allow the same structural property with less material used.
2.The edge wise joint will replace conventional metal joints, and windows and door opening will made by CLT alone, hence creating a holistic architecture that will require no materials import, but, only with CLT.
The state of art of Lignor’s Cross Laminated StrandTimber (CLSTTM) which has a higher log to timber conversion ratio is to use pulp wood – Eucalyptus Grandis with stranding technology which allows a higher log to timber conversion rate (80%) with a much faster rotation of only 12 years compared to conventional spruce for CLT which require 28 years rotation.2This may further reduce the forest to urban fabric ratio. By using Eucalyptus Grandis which grow best in valley environment with vast water resource, the un- derused valley area in Kigali can be used for forestation. This will give green space as well as timber source for local CLST construction. Furthermore, it would help filtering city water going back to earth as well as alleviate flooding problems.
ARIZONA HOSPICE FOR NATIVE AMERICAN
Arizona is looking for a way to generate income for the capital but is pondering the idea of developing the great canyon into a tourism park . e canyon holds signi cant meanings to the native Americans that may ended up heavily polluted due to tourism.
e government kept exploiting land resources from the native Americans the Navajos since long time ago. By building coal factories in their land that exhale huge amount of carbon dioxide annually that greatly harm the local’s lives.
Meanwhile the Navajo Coal Factory is facing nancial problems and is facing demolition. Can this piece of architecture be reused to generate a more sustainable income and future for the capital and the locals?

e Concept is to reuse the architecture of the Coal Factory and revitalise it with herbal plants that are healing to the Navajo patients and scenic enough to be a botanical garden for tourism.

Patients will live in the typical oors of the silos, those are the rooms of patients.
Upon the last few days prior death patients will move to the top oor, where sky lights are available to allow patients to stay connect to the nature, all their belongings will be moved around the death bed with their family members staying by their sides.
As they passed away the light from the sky will lead the way to their a er life, and their belongings will be burned away.
e coal eld is now turned into a cemetery, for each Navajo patients who passed away there will be a memorial stone put in place.
It will be one of the main destination for tourism on top of the botanicalgarden.Asaneducationofthehistoryandharmfulness of coal factory has on the people.
AUTOMATIC HAND FABRICATION WORKS
Incorporating CNC fabrication in creating an Installation Art. It is an asembled COAT RACK that can anchor itself and carry the weight of clothing without falling.
It is made from collected scraped woods with CNC joints. e vertical elements are carved out by CNC to create a hollow core to create an illusions that the racks can hang itself at the corner despite the heaviness of the woods.
