When it comes to the business of producing beef, Tyler Copland is a firm believer that size matters. Story By Lee Hart
orn and raised on a long-time Simmental farm near Tees, in south central Alberta, Copland says that while many in the beef industry are leaning toward medium-sized cattle, he still prefers to run larger-framed 1,500 to 1,700 pound crossbred cows on the family farm. “The purebred industry has done an excellent job of improving many traits within the breed,” says Copland. “But the medium size, smaller frame cattle don’t really suit my program. I still want the traditional Simmental cattle. I like the traditional colour (fullblood Fleckvieh influence), and the dual-purpose aspect of larger cows. They produce the milk that produces larger calves and more pounds of beef.” Running about 300 head of females (250 head of mature cows along with about 50 heifers) Copland points to early November weaning weights, which average about 800 pounds. “These cattle are raised on summer pasture that is a combination of native and tame grass paddocks, but they really don’t receive any special treatment,” he says. “The calves are growing because their mothers are producing lots of milk. The cows may take a bit more feed, but then they are producing more beef.” Copland is second generation on the familyoperated Tyco and Sons Ltd. farm about 40 kilometres northeast of Red Deer. Along with his wife LeeAnn, Copland is joined in the mixed-farming venture by his sons Tanner, 12 and Taylen, 10. His parents Howard and Helen Copland are still actively involved as well. In 2019, Tyco and Sons Ltd. was named Commercial Breeder of the Year by the Alberta Simmental Association. Along with cattle they also crop about 2,500 acres of grains, oilseed and pulse crops. About 230 acres is seeded to corn for silage, while 20 acres of corn will be used for early winter grazing. One of the early Simmental breeders in Alberta, Howard Copland was very active in the purebred industry when Tyler got involved in the 4-H program. “I remember as a kid that dad was taking cattle to shows, improving genetics through A.I., and flushing cows for embryos,” says Tyler. “It was a lot of work. I remember as I got involved in 4-H probably in the early 1990s, he was starting to transition toward a commercial herd (purebred but not registered).” Some of the first crosses were with Beef Booster bulls, and later they also used Red Angus in their heifer-breeding program. The Angus-cross produced good cattle, although Copland felt the cows were getting too small.

“I have just always liked the traditional Simmental cattle,” says Copland. “The fullbloods with the size and white and tan colour are getting more difficult to find. Today our breeding

continued from cover program involves mostly Simmental bulls for both cows and heifers, and we also use a couple Charolais bulls as well.” About 70 per cent of the herd shows the traditional tan and white colors, nearly 30 per cent are red, showing the Angus influence, and there are a few tan coloured reflecting the Charolais influence. Copland sources breeding stock from a number of breeders including, Beechinor Simmentals of Bentley, Lockhart Valley Simmentals of Rimbey, and SIBL Simmentals of Cherhill, Alberta. Calving season starts in midFebruary and wraps up with the last few head in mid-April. “The bulls are out for a two-month breeding season timed so we start calving in February,” he says. “The plan is to have calving finished before we begin field work.” Calf birth weights with the cowherd average about 90 pounds, with it ranging to 100 and even 110 pounds with a few bigger calves. The heifers, also bred to Simmental, are producing calves that range between 70 and 80 pounds. About 80 per cent of the cowherd is bred to Simmental while the remaining cows are bred to Charolais. “Everything is on full feed at calving season, so the herd is close in so we can keep a close eye on them,” says Copland. “We have good facilities here if we need to bring something in, but calving difficulty really isn’t a concern. We have very good calving success.” As calving season ends, Copland turns to getting the crop seeded, which takes about three weeks. Bulls are usually turned in with females in early May. “When seeding is done about the third week of May we shut the tractor off, and immediately turn to getting cows and calves processed and heading out to pasture,” he says. “We are fortunate that all our grass is close by so the cow-calf pairs can walk to all our pastures.” Aside from the annual cropped acres, about 25 to 30 per cent of the farm is in developed pasture. “We also have quite a bit of native grassland,” says Copland. “That includes some low lying slough grass areas as well as quite a bit of bush land as well.” While the heifers make up one breeding group, the cowherd is divided into three different groups for summer grazing. “It is not a super intensive grazing system, and pasture and paddock sizes will vary,” says Copland. “It depends which pasture they are in but we are usually moving cattle about once a week.” The length of the grazing season depends largely on the amount of rain during the growing season. In dryer growing seasons he has provided a creep feed supplement for calves and in an extremely dry year like 2018, he had little option but to wean
12
calves early and start feeding until calves were sold. “In 2019 we were fortunate to have good and timely rainfall,” says Copland in an early December interview with Simmental Country. “Cows are still out grazing, although we’re providing about half a feed ration to supplement the grass.” Most years Copland aims to market steer calves in late September or early October. He has used the DLMS electronic marketing service for about five years. “Our plan has been to market the steer calves by early October, get them sold, but then the calves will remain on pasture with their mothers until they are weaned and delivered around November 1st.” Heifers are weaned about the same time as well. Cows and heifers will remain on pasture in late fall and into early winter as long as snow permits. And while most of the corn is cut for silage, Copland saves about 20 acres for winter grazing. “We’ve been working with corn on and off for the past dozen years or so,” he says. “In 2019 we left about 20 acres of standing corn to be used as short term feed particularly over the mid-December to mid-January period. The standing corn is good, but we want everything to be on full feed about a month before they begin calving.” Copland doesn’t put up any hay, so full feed includes about 10 per cent as a slough grass ration with about 90 per cent being corn silage ration. While steers leave the farm in early November, Copland keeps heifer calves on feed until February. “Just before calving I’ll select those to keep for our own replacement heifers,” he says. “I’ll also select another 30 good quality heifers to be marketed to other producers as replacement heifers. Any remaining heifers will be sold into the feeder market.” Copland says the Simmental breed continues to have an excellent fit in optimizing beef production. “I like those big cows,” he says. “They can produce a bigger calf and then they have the milk to keep it growing during the grazing season right through to weaning. They have exceptional milk production. Buyers like these big calves. When you have something that weans 800 pounds it doesn’t take long on feed before it’s at 1000 pounds. I am more than happy with the way the breed performs.”

How Genomic Profiles Benefit the Canadian Commercial Cattle Producer
anadian commercial cattle producers are faced with many challenges but share a common goal of managing the available inputs to maximize the outputs and get the highest return possible. Each herd is evolving and changing, and each producer needs to identify areas to improve or change their own herd. For example, maybe fertility is an emerging issue and you have identified your open or not pregnant rate is increasing over the years. Or say your weaning weights are shrinking and therefore your pay cheque is as well. How can you determine what could be the issues and more importantly how to solve them? One piece of the puzzle is genomics, the study of, in this case beef genetics and DNA. There is a lot of information to be gained by taking the opportunity to learn more about the genetics that are in your herd and that can pass down to each season’s calves. There are three DNA-based tools that can help commercial producers manage their herd. The first of these tools is sire verification or parentage. Determining parentage provides information to know which bull from your herd is the sire of each calf. Knowing which bulls are getting the job done for you and producing the best, (or the worst) of your calves.Knowing the sires of your replacement heifers allows you to plan so you don’t breed them back to their sire. The other DNA based tools that commercial producers can use are Igenity® Beef Profile and EnVigour™. The Igenity® Beef Profile is a genomic tool offered by Neogen Canada that provides a score of 1-10 on key measurable traits plus parentage. This 1-10 number is based on beef cattle records and genetics in the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) database. IGS is the genomic evaluation provider for most North American beef breeds thus providing you with the most accurate and relevant data in relation to your animals in your operation. The Igenity® Beef Profile evaluates 16 maternal, performance and carcass traits plus parentage. The traits that are evaluated and how they are measured are; Maternal Traits Birth Weight – Variation in birth weight a heifer or bull will pass along to its offspring. A higher score indicates potential for heavier birth weight. Calving Ease Direct – Percentage of unassisted births, indicating greater probability a calf will be born unassisted out of a first-calf heifer. A higher value is greater calving ease. Calving Ease Maternal – The probability a first-calf heifer will calve unassisted. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) includes all genetic factors that impact a heifer’s ability to calve unassisted. A higher value is greater calving ease. Stayability – The chance a heifer will remain in the herd as aproductive cow until at least six years of age. A higher value is desired. Heifer Pregnancy Rate – A heifer’s potential to conceive during breeding season, a higher value is desired. Docility – The animal’s genetic potential to be calm or have calm offspring. Higher scores indicate a higher probability of progeny with acceptable disposition. Milk – Is expressed as pounds of calf weaning weight affected by the milk production of a calf’s dam.
18
Performance Traits Residual Feed Intake – This is an indicator of feed efficiency. Lower RFI indicates greater feed efficiency. Average Daily Gain – Based on pounds of gain per day. The Igenity score for Average Daily Gain (ADG) identifies an animal’s genetic potential for post-weaning growth. Weaning Weight – Pounds at age of 205 days. Yearling Weight – Pounds at age of 365 days. Carcass Traits Tenderness – Animal’s genetic potential for carcass tenderness as measured by the Warner-Bratzler Shear Force test. A higher score indicates greater tenderness. Marbling – Marbling score indicates the degree of marbling in the rib eye at the 12th rib expressed in USDA marbling units. Ribeye Area – Ribeye Area estimates muscling in a beef carcass andis measured in square inches of the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib. Fat Thickness – Fat thickness is scored as depth of fat in inches over the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib. Higher Fat Thickness scores equate to lower lean yield. EnVigour™ is the third tool to help commercial producers and measures heterosis in their cattle to give an indication of hybrid vigour. What hybrid vigour adds to your herd is increased health, lifetime productivity, stayability, as well as increased tolerance to environmental conditions and stressors. EnVigour™ uses genetics from 13 cattle breeds to create a single measure of heterosis as a 1-10 score. Producers can use this 1-10 EnVigour™ score to help them select replacement heifers aligned with their herd goals. When added to the Igenity® Beef Profile, EnVigour™ generates the Igenity® Total Cow Index. The Igenity® Total Cow Index weighs the maternal traits of birth weight, calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, stayability, heifer pregnancy rate, docility, and milk and adds into the equation the animal’s heterosis (EnVigour™ score) to generate the index score. This index provides information that balances the hybrid vigour of the replacement female with her genetic potential to pass on heritable maternal traits to her offspring, providing a comprehensive score of her ability to stay healthy, wean calves, and contribute to the genetic gain of your future calf crops. When it comes to determining what scores are “ideal” it is very operational dependent. It is important to identify your goals. Do you want high ranking maternal cows who pass on strong performance traits? Maybe your goals are to raise animals with strong carcass traits that are enjoyed by the end consumer. Using the genomics can help in many ways. For example, you can use the Igenity® scores to sort cattle and managethem for breeding or production. You can choose which traits are important to enhance your operation and make decisions based on that. Or, the data can help you pinpointstrengths and weaknesses in your cow herd and identify traits you want to improve. A common way to make improvements in your herd is to buy bulls that excel in specific traits. For example, if your cows average low for marbling scores, you can improve your herd by buying bulls that are in the top 30% of their breed for marbling. You can also select your best females for marbling traits. This would move you faster towards your goals. Long term, you can use your Igenity® Beef Profile and EnVigour™ reports to track improvements across multiple traits, increase heterosis in your cattle and measure your progress to put you in the most profitable position possible.

Simmental – Becoming the Beef Industry Standard
H
appy New Year and welcome to the first issue of Commercial Country for 2020! 2019 was again an interesting year for Canadian agriculture with many of us again needing flexibility because of challenging weather conditions during the seeding and harvest seasons. Those of us who have been in the industry for several decades have seen these same challenges before although that doesn’t make them any easier when they are now combined with the new challenges and pressures of food production. Like the Simmental breed in Canada adaptability is crucial as agriculture continues to change and evolve. For those of you who may be new to the cattle business, it might come as a surprise that Simmental was not always as popular and as well received in the beef cattle sector as they are today. In fact there was a time when Simmental influenced cattle were hard to sell and were often sold at a discount to other breeds. That has definitely changed as Simmental breeders are now providing much different genetics that better suit market demands. While many commercial cattle producers did alright marketing their calves in the fall of 2019, some experienced lower prices than expected; these were mainly straightbred British calves that lacked the quality and/or size of the Simmental calves in the pen beside them. Throughout the fall run of 2019 Simmental influenced feeder calves brought premiums when compared to other breeds, and in some areas were bringing ten to twenty cents or more per pound over older straight British bred calves of the same weight. A ‘money stripe” or a blaze face on a calf brought an even larger premium as it clearly indicated Simmental influence. Weight also played a factor in take-home pay as Simmental influenced calves of the same age were often one hundred pounds heavier than straight British calves and at $2.00 per pound provided a $200 to $300 per calf higher return. There were few complaints from cattle producers who sold $1600 calves at the beginning of October when buyers were looking for Simmental calves and were paying a premium for them because they know that today’s top quality Simmental influenced cattle feed well, and provide the yield and carcass size while grading to fit today’s market demands.
24
Nowhere was the Simmental presence noticed more than at one of the highlight events in November at the Canadian Western Agribition Commercial cattle show and sale. Simmental genetics were found in almost every pen in the barn and all of the show winners and high sellers were Simmental influenced. All of the open replacement heifer pens were Simmental influenced seventy-five percent of the bred heifers carried Simmental genetics. While bred commercial female prices were somewhat lower, premiums were definitely paid on the top end Simmental influenced females. It was also great to see Simm-cross heifers selling that were bred to easy calving Simmental bulls. Yes that’s right, producers are now breeding their heifers to easy calving Simmental bulls! The maternal influence of the Simmental cow is well known and is in demand and brings a premium. It is also evident that there are many reasons for British based cowherds to use today’s Simmental bulls and retain the crossbred heifers as replacements. The weight gain that will be realized on the steer calves makes for a double win. While some traditionalists may worry about qualifying for branded beef programs such as Certified Angus Beef (CAB), they can rest easy as the black hided ones will still qualify out of black Simmental and non-diluter red and traditional Simmental bulls. There is a reason that SimmAngus has become an industry buzz-word throughout North America and nothing adds more immediate value to an Angus cowherd than a Simmental bull! As we continue to see in every part of the country, quality is still rewarded in all aspects of beef production, and it has never been more important to have more pounds of calf to sell than it is now. The most cost-effective way to gain more pounds is through heterosis and no other breed provides more opportunity to increase profitability for today’s beef producers than Simmental. Whether you are looking for a group of quality replacement females or need a bull that can add profit to your program while still providing calving ease and convenience, contact a Simmental breeder and discover how the Simmental advantage can benefit you!

An IGS Insight
elow is an update written by Dr. Lauren Hyde., who is one of the lead staff on EPD development and computer programming with IGS. This provides some insight into the science that is regularly deployed and updated in the IGS evaluation system that CSA is a part of. Some of the following may be a bit computer speak, but hopefully it gives you a bit of an idea of the background workings and ongoing improvements that continue to happen in our evaluation working through our relationship with IGS. The IGS evaluation is conducted weekly on over 18 million individuals and represents the largest beef cattle evaluation in the world. CSA data (pedigree, performance, DNA) is submitted weekly and new EPD are updated into the CSA system on a weekly basis. Lauren is heading into retirement shortly, but her position will be capably filled by Dr. Miranda “Randie” Culbertson.
Check Out What We Have Done So Far
By Lauren Hyde, Ph.D. Nearly a year and a half ago, on Saturday, May 5, 2018, the American Simmental Association released the first full suite of multibreed EPDs powered by the state-of-the-art BOLT software. I have to admit that the ASA staff, with the exception of very few (maybe only Steve McGuire), was very scared as to what we would find in our email, voicemail, Facebook Messenger and so on come Monday morning. However, it wound up being so quiet, we all heard that mythical pin drop. I’m not saying that we were perfect in our execution, but as your members started to evaluate the new EPDs, you had some well-deserved comments and questions that we were expecting. We knew that the software wasn’t “done.” It never will be. In fact, I was still revising the 30-year-old Cornell software as recently as two short years ago. As with the old Cornell software, we will continue to update, revise and improve the EPDs produced by the new BOLT software. Check out what we have done so far: June 2018 • Developed evaluation audit reports on incoming record counts for ASA staff and IGS partners • Developed quality control (QC) reports for incoming genomic data • Started clearing up erroneous and missing genotypes among all associations • American Shorthorn Association released IGS EPDs July 2018 • Started parallel (aka beta) testing for IGS partners yet to release IGS EPDs • Started delivering weekly QC reports to each association through the genomic pipeline, which routes genomic data from all genomic labs to the IGS partners and then the IGS database August 2018 • American Gelbvieh Association, North American Limousin Foundation and Canadian Simmental Association released IGS EPDs • Added embryo transfer data to the evaluation • Discovered and corrected duplicate animal IDs • Began collecting feed intake and heifer pregnancy data from IGS partners September 2018 • Canadian Shorthorn Association released IGS EPDs • Initiated monthly IGS partner conference calls to discuss issues and updates with the evaluation
32
October 2018 • Red Angus Association of America released IGS EPDs • Developed a web-based interface for bull lookups and QC (Quality Control) error checking for ASA staff and IGS partners • Established a “white list” to keep animals with insignificant genomic discrepancies in the evaluation • Adjusted the evaluation system to add genomic data on animals without carcass or ultrasound phenotypes November 2018 • Implemented a Java script to compute breed composition of all animals in the IGS database at a much faster rate • Began a research project with CSU to develop a days-to-finish EPD • Initiated a project known as Work Order 1 (WO1) in order to: – Remove erroneous birth weights from the evaluation – Separate birth contemporary groups between calves out of two-year-old dams from calves out of older ones – Include heterogeneous variances for weaning weight based on sex of calf – Remove the moderately negative genetic correlation between weaning weight direct and maternal and set it to zero – Implement an updated marker subset of genomic data December 2018 • Added trio (sire + dam + calf) mating checks to the QC error reports January 2019 • Began investigating multi-breed imputation • Started evaluating the latest version of the FImpute software package February 2019 • Began refining the Zoetis arm of the genomic pipeline • Received preliminary results on the days-to-finish EPD research project • Combined the heifer pregnancy (HPG) data from the IGS partners and began refining it March 2019 • Started to investigate potential improvements to the carcass weight-ribeye area (CW-REA) evaluation • Fixed minor bugs in the online bull lookup tool • Added birth dates and other supplemental data to the HPG dataset • Received the first set of health data courtesy of Darr Feedlot • Upgraded the Postgres evaluation database
April 2019 • Started exploring modifications to the utilization of external EPDs • Tested several scenarios in the investigation to potentially improve the CW-REA evaluation • Updated carcass breed differences with new data from USMARC • Fixed a small bug in the docility evaluation scripts May 2019 • Canadian Angus Association released IGS EPDs • North American South Devon Association submitted external EPDs • Began planning for the IGS partner meeting to be held October 23-24 in Bozeman • Started building and developing server #5 June 2019 • Developed a standard format for sharing pedigree extracts among IGS partner associations in order to catch dual-registered animals more quickly • Released data to Colorado State University (the leaders in PAP EPD development) for development of a PAP EPD July 2019 • Implemented multi-breed imputation software • Installed and configured FImpute • Implemented updates to the CW-REA evaluation
August 2019 • Added Australian Shorthorn Association data • Added updated American Angus Association externals • Re-calculated progeny equivalents for each trait computed by IGS I am writing this article on September 18. In just a few days, I will be traveling from Denver to the Rhine River in Germany to find out where my maternal grandparents lived before they immigrated to Chicago and met in English school. After my excursion, I will be finishing up all of my outstanding projects so that I can retire on December 31 to pursue my dream of coaching and teaching swimming. I am fortunate to have worked with the best team in the beef cattle industry. The ASA staff is knowledgeable, hard-working, creative and fun. This fantastic group of individuals has shown time and time again that it is more than capable of developing and implementing innovative sciencebased products to help you produce cattle that make a significant genetic contribution to the beef industry. I truly wish all of you, ASA members and staff alike, much success in your efforts to keep moving the breed forward and ensuring that SimGenetics continue to have a major influence in the global market.

W
ith pain medication there may be adjunct treatment with antibiotics but often times the antibiotics may be unnecessary. If your veterinarian prescribes NSAIDs for pain he/she may choose the one they do based on label claim, past experience in the field, price per treatment or per 100 pounds, duration of activity, ease of administration, advice of associates or slaughter withdrawal. Lots of things to consider but hopefully this article and discussion with your veterinarian will make the decision that much easier in the future for you. With hard calvings for years, the clinic I was associated with, would give calves Flunixine IV thinking swelling and soreness on the legs and potentially ribs were greatly reduced and I believe they were. Calves on IV fluids for scours as long as being treated for the dehydration, NSAIDs were given routinely and now proven that appetite is increased. With calving season approaching let’s talk about the cow. After calving treatment with NSAIDs should lead to less obturator paralysis, quicker recovery from vaginal contusions and all other pain and soreness with calving should be diminished. Appetite is not lost so milk production is maintained. If one follows the beef codes of practice major surgical procedures such as C-sections, usage of NSAIds at the time of delivery or actually just at the beginning of surgery is the accepted practice. I know from experience the recovery to C-sections is much more rapid and they don’t spend the first day moping around. I have used injectable products, oral meloxicam and now the Banamine TD all with great success. The later two have a greater ease of administration which makes them both desirable around the calving cows. Most vets are prescribing NSAIDs for all the prolapses they deal with including a prolapsed uterus. Again, if recovery is quicker milk production is better, so never a bad thing. With calving one needs to have your parameters based of a hard, medium or light pull. Light being able to pull by hand with no other assistance. Stages medium or hard is when a calf puller may be applied. One also knows pulling with the cows contractions and going slow and methodical and applying lots of lubricant can avert a tough calving. One must recognize the type of skill level you have and treat accordingly. Was there a tear created, did you pull too fast, was the calf slow to get breathing, did you hear any unusual pops or snaps indicating tension. Did the cow end up with a little obturator paralysis? All these are clues the pull may
44
have been too hard. From better milking to increasing appetite, quicker to mother up and potentially being quicker to rebreed are all possibilities NSAIDs can help with when given to cows after a pull. Even though we seldom have hard pulls, manipulation for malpresentations, torsions, breech births etc. all cause at least irritation to the vagina. A lot of producers now have painkillers prescribed for the season and have them close to the chute so they can easily be given. Keep in mind no labels have “pain control at calving” on them but those changes will come with more research I feel. Therefore, because prescription drugs veterinarians prescribe them for extra label ways. I think most veterinarians would agree with me and probably prescribe something like Dexamethasone for the cows you find down from a difficult calving. The very potent effect of this steroid seems quicker and effective if given early in cows with obturator paralysis. The negative effects are its immunosuppressive effects so often antibiotics may be prescribed concurrently. I personally wouldn’t prescribe steroids for anything other than the down cow. The NSAIDs are the way to go most times. There is no doubt the use of NSAIDs as an ancillary treatment or a stand-alone treatment at calving goes a long way towards a quicker recovery. That is for both in the pair (cow and calf). If you feel the calf needs a NSAID, think of the cow. If you think the cow needs a NSAID think of the calf. A tighter pull affects both the cow and the calf so think of treatments for both next time a difficult calving arises. There are many choices you and your veterinarian can work out. It is also good for the public to know, you as producers, give painkillers for difficult birthing’s to both cow and calf. Cattle have been looked after and observed closely at calving, so these painkillers add another tool in the tool box to improve welfare of the Canadian cattle herd. Get familiar with the various painkillers out there including their dosage and withdrawal dates. A horse NSAID called Phenylbutazone or “Butazone” should never ever be used in cattle production and is a banned product. Hopefully calving season goes well, and you have very few even moderate to tough pulls, but if you do it is nice to know NSAIDs can increase the comfort of both cow and calf.

David Haywood-Farmer CCA President
The past few months have been extremely active for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). On the foreign trade front, the CCA was extremely pleased with the resumption of trade with China in late November. Following discovery of fraudulent pork export certificates on June 25th, 2019, Canadian exports of meat were halted. Since June, CCA has been actively engaged in discussions with government officials to help ensure Canadian beef exports to China would be eligible as soon as possible. The Government of Canada completed an investigation and submitted an Action Plan that supported the re-establishment of exports to China; all establishments eligible to export as of June 25, 2019 are once again eligible. CCA wants to thank all those involved in restoring this important trade relationship. Shipments of Canadian beef to China represented 2.6 per cent of Canada’s total beef exports in 2018. In the 1st half of 2019 exports to China were up 271% in value at 11,315 tonnes valued at $96 million and were on pace to reach 6.1% of total exports. The CCA was recently in China for meetings to further build the CanadaChina trade relationship. Back in Canada, CCA representatives met with Beef Farmers of Ontario and the Ontario Cattle Feeders Association in November to discuss challenges in Eastern Canada. Chief among these is the shortage in packing capacity, which has resulted in significant economic impact on both the dairy and beef industries. The extent of the situation is estimated at $174 million economic benefit if cattle prices were normalized to the five-year fall average price for fed cattle and cows in Ontario and Quebec from the 2018 eastern fall price lows. The problem is being further exacerbated by the hopefully temporary closure of one of the plants in Ontario. This value of course does not fully capture the extent of the hardship caused by shortage of slaughter capacity in the East. This lack of processing capabilities also increases other costs, for example, if cattle are being kept on feed longer than anticipated and often results in price discounts on these cattle. Furthermore, the processing shortages have ramifications extending beyond Ontario and Quebec, and into the Maritimes. The economic impact of these ongoing shortages is significant and warrants careful consideration and timely action. We at CCA foresee a number of solutions that would help alleviate these challenges, including the funding of an export diversification fund, a joint government and industry initiative assessing the need for a short-term assistance program, increasing access to labour through the temporary foreign workers program and recently announced pilot program, and undertaking a study to assess the regulatory competitiveness of Canada’s packing industry. As we head back to Ottawa this fall, this will be top priority for CCA working with the new government.

Further East, the Maritime Beef Strategy covering New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island has a goal to expand cattle inventories and beef production. There is ample pasture for the cow-calf sector to expand and feed available with the region being a net exporter of barley. There is also growing demand for locally grown beef through Atlantic Beef Products Inc. These signs all bode well for expansion of the Maritime beef herd, however, a lack of risk management tools available in the region increases the price risk and limits the options for young producers in accessing financial support. CCA met with Maritime beef representatives throughout the fall to assess some of these challenges. The Maritime beef and dairy combined cow herd of 100,800 head (as of January 1, 2019) typically ships over 50% of calves to Ontario or Quebec. Some feeders are backgrounded locally before being sold to Ontario or Quebec for finishing. The pinch point is at the finishing stage as packer demand is currently 650 - 1,000 head per week, with the shortfall being purchased in from Quebec. Atlantic Beef Products does have plans to expand cooler and shipping space as well as moving to an all-day kill and fabrication. There are currently around 26,800 head of cattle on feed in finishing feedlots in the Maritime region that could potentially be interested in price insurance as a useful tool to establish a base price. If risk management tools better equipped producers to retain all beef calves and dairy steers for finishing in the region, available supplies could increase to over 70,000 head (depending on beef heifer retention percentages). Unfortunately, there is currently not enough price data in the Maritime region to support a Maritime Settlement Index similar to those in other provinces. However, producers have recognized that there is already a high correlation between cattle prices in Ontario and Quebec, as the local prices arbitrage to those larger markets. Maritime producers are willing to accept an out of province settlement index, through the creation of an Eastern Settlement Index, consisting of data from Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. CCA will continue to work with its Eastern members to advance this initiative in the new year. Throughout the remainder of 2019, CCA staff and directors have been meeting with global and domestic stakeholders and policy makers. I am extremely pleased with the work being done on our behalf by the dedicated and talented staff. Finally, with this being the final column of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow producers from coast to coast a safe and happy holiday season. May 2020 be a year of continued prosperity and opportunity for Canada’s beef industry.

Congratulations to Hoffus Stock Farms 2019 SSA Commercial breeder of the year Hoffus Stock Farms have been breeding Simmental for over 30 years. HSF is run by Randy & Irene Hoffus, and Aaron & Amber Hoffus, along with their kids Grace and Vance, and is located near Bjorkdale, SK. They grain farm 8,500 acres, with another 2,500 acres dedicated to hay and pasture land. They annually calve 325 females that are predominantly straight Simmental. The added pounds at weaning and the exceptional females are what drew them to the breed, and has had them hooked ever since. They sell their calves at the auction mart and annually top the market with their consistent quality group. They sell replacement females to a string of repeat customers, direct from the farm. The family takes true pride in the day to day operations of their farm. They have dedicated their life to always enhancing their herd in the best possible way.
2019 SSA Commercial Breeder of the Year Aaron & Amber Hoffus, along with their kids Grace and Vance, sign presented by President Kirsten Fornwald.
