Welcome to our 12th Annual Steppler Farms Bull Sale. We are truly honoured to be able to continue raising purebred livestock, making it Steppler Farms 49th year. Mom and Dad started their purebred operation in 1973 with their first registration in 1974. All the bulls were sold by private treaty where great friendships and long-term customers were established. As a child, I remember every weekend was spent in the bull pen and there was a constant emphasis on customer satisfaction. Now we are selling twice as many bulls through a bull sale, our customer reach has expanded immensely, and two new breeds have been introduced. The one thing that has not changed, is that commitment to our customers. Producing high quality breeding pieces that sell with the industry leading guarantee is the goal. Check out the programs on page 4. Simply put, these programs are designed to add more value to your purchase. We, at Steppler Farms, are consistently looking for ways to provide more value for dollars invested and these programs do exactly that. One of our closest friends describes it as – simple and easy!

For new customers looking through the catalogue, you will notice that we rank all the bulls for calving ease. With the reality of the industry moving to more calving on grass, bulls must calve. With that said we also want to make sure that the cow has the right genetic ask to raise a great calf. Analyse your cow herd and your calving needs, then sort through the bulls and select the right fit.

This is the first year that we are now offering Black Angus and Simmental bulls. This has always been in the works to help provide our customers with a broader range of genetics to increase their profitability. Each one of these divisions are being designed with the cow always as the most important part. The maternal abilities of these two breeds are truly unmatched. With different management practises and environments of our clients, we felt we needed both breeds to help achieve the best maternal selection.

I would also like to take this time to introduce and welcome Bryce and Nikki Olmstead as partners in supplying us high quality Simmental bulls. Bryce and Nikki are not only some of our closest friends, Nikki is Kate’s sister! The Simmental breed is not foreign to us since Kate and Nikki grew up in the Simmental breed with parents being Kelly and Elaine Ferris; Boynecrest Stock Farms. We are all closely working together to supplying you a tremendous Simmental bull pen.

To put together this solid set of bulls, it takes a progressive team. This includes everyone from our family, employees, nutritionists, vets, marketing team, silage crew, and of course our clients. Welcome to the 12th Annual Bull Sale at Steppler Farms

Welcome to the Steppler Farms 12th Annual Bull sale, February 15, 2023, at the ranch in their heated sale facility. From one of industry’s largest multi-breed cow herds, Andre, Katie and the crew present you with an outstanding and exciting lineup of bulls for your appraisal. The program is a half century old and supplies both purebred and commercial producers alike with added value sires to enhance their cow herds and pounds of gain at weaning. It has been said many times that the cattle are only as good as the people that produce them… well, these folks are among the finest in the industry. Strong in family values, dedicated to community functions and devoted to the production of high-quality purebred seed stock. Their powerful Charolais cow herd now has competition as the Stepplers have added Simmental and Black Angus to their program. Although these breeds are still in their growing stages, several bulls are on offer in addition to the over 100 Charolais money-makers. The bulls are rugged and stout with top performance… muscle, hair, and testicle are mandatory, but ease of calving has been selected for and bred into the cow herd. The Charolais offering is comprised of 65 two-year-olds… bulls that can cover more cows, bigger cows, and all types of terrain. The yearlings are madeup from the top selected 2022 models… genetically and phenotypically diverse, there are sires for all types of breeding programs and all types of budgets… one must search and discover the bulls that will work for you. The Simmental and Angus bulls have been produced and maintained with the same management principles as their counterparts in the Charolais program. The insurance plan, the Steppler Bull Guarantee and extended warranty, along with discounts for volume purchases makes this bull sale the one that can fill your breeding requirements.

Steppler Farms Breeding Warranty

• All bulls sold through the 2023 bull sale are covered for injury and death 6 months after the February 15th bull sale date with ZERO PREMIUM.

• The buyer must contact Steppler Farms immediately to ensure coverage is within the 6-month warranty date.

• All injured bulls become the property of Steppler Farms and a signed transferable registration paper must accompandy the bull upon return.

• If requested, injured bulls must be checked by a certified vet and this report shared with Steppler Farms.

• You will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2024 bull sale. Steppler Farms will only cover up to a $10,000 investment on a bull. If a buyer wants to cover a more expensive bull, he or she will need to deal with their own outside insurance.

• Buyer will receive a backup bull to get their cows bred at zero charge to the buyer.

• The backup bull must be returned by the customer to Steppler Farms by October 1st.

Steppler Farms Herd Bull Guarantee

• We want to make sure the sale bull you purchase meets your requirements. Not all bulls work out as hoped. Steppler Farms sale bulls have met the following requirements in our goal of ensuring customer satisfaction when you purchase a sale bull:

• All bulls have passed a semen evaluation and are sold with a semen report.

• All bulls are selected for sound structure with breeding capability.

• All bulls are handled and are guarenteed to be able to be worked with proper handling skills.

• All bulls have been fed a high forage diet which develops the bulls to be able to recondition themselves.

IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH YOUR BULL SALE PURCHASE, PLEASE CONTACT ME FIRST.

• Bulls returned in the Herd Bull Warranty must be vet checked, if requested, to ensure they are fertile, healthy, and injury free. After the 6-month guarentee date, bulls are not covered for injury.

• Bulls must be returned to Steppler Farms with a satisfactory body condition score, with a signed transferable registration paper. Steppler Farms reserves the right to deduct from the sales credit for any bull returned with a body condition score lower than 3. Steppler Farms also assumes full possession of the returned bull.

THE HERD BULL GUARENTEE IS AS FOLLOWS:

• After 1 breeding season - 75% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

• Year 2 - 50% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

• Year 3 - 25% sale credit of the original sale price to be used in the next year’s sale.

Steppler Farms will only cover up to a $10,000 investment on a bull. If a buyer wants to cover a more expensive bull, he or she will need to deal with their own outside insurance. The best part of both these programs - you are dealing with Andre directly. There is no middleman, no run-around. Just call Andre.

Steppler Farms Extended Warranty

This exciting new program is designed to get your cows bred to a high quality bull when a bull goes down. The reality is bulls will get hurt and never just before the bull sale season. It’s expensive to buy extra spare bulls, so it’s time to be covered by Steppler Farms. Every Steppler bulls comes with an extended warranty. If any Steppler bull, of any age fails, simply phone me. We will supply a high level back up bull to get your cows bred. Time is money and nobody can afford open/late or cows bred to a second cut individual.

$1000 gets you a breeding bull, delivered; bull comes back to Steppler Farms by October 1st. Now the best part, that $1000 turns into credit in the next year’s bull sale. See it as a down payment on your new herdsire. It is time to get more out of your herd bull purchases. Steppler Farms provides you that!

Credits

Credits can be used in either the female or bull sale. All credits must be used within a year.

Calving Ease Rank

The majority of cattlemen’s programs have changed in the past decade; with larger cattle herd and more calves born on grass, calving assits must be minimal. Calving ease has always been an important consideration in our breeding program, so we have included a calving ease score to help you select your next herd sires. We provide in the catalogue actual birthweights, as well as birthweight and calving ease EPD’s. Before selecting your next sire, first evaluate your cow herd and breeding program and know the type of bullls that work for you. All bulls should sire calves with high levels of vigour at birth, with the majority being born unassisted as long as the bulls are used on the recommended cow type. I should note that we run several different types and ages of females, so we have used bulls on all 4 levels of our calving ease score. By using our calving ease score, you get my best evaluation of a bulls calving ease ability, so we have included a calving ease ranking to help you select your next herd sires.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS WHEN YOU EVALUATE YOUR COW HERD:

• What are my calving ease expectations and program goals?

• What does my cow herd look like? Consider breed, cow size, age of female, female genetics, etc.

• What are my management factors? Consider nutrition, exercise, time, and interval of calving.

• What are outside influences? Consider the weather.

MY CRITERIA WHEN I DETERMINE A BULL’S CALVING EASE SCORE: Phenotype

How the bull is made. Structural soundness for calving ease. Smooth shouldered, smaller head, degree of bone, balance.

Gestation

Days between conception and birth date.

Maternal Calving Ease

Pedigree - How predictable and consistent has the pedigree been for calving. Ex - Inconsistency can come from a larger birthweight grandmother.

Actual Birthweight and Calving Ease

Each calf is weighed and a calving ease score given at the time of birth.

Environment

• Weather and nutrition of dam in the last 30 days of gestation. Calves’ birthweights and calving ease can be substantially differnt when comparing calves born the 1st of January to those born the 1st of March.

• Outside facotrs affecting the calf’s actual data (Twin, placenta issues, dam injury, etc.)

Calving Ease Ranking

The bull feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health; they are developed on grass with their moms on a strict mineral program. All the forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality forages are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly moved onto a balanced TMR.

The bulls are challenged with a forage-based TMR to help them develop and express their genetic potential. Matching suitable protein sources with proper starch is key to promoting lean muscle growth. Organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health. If you have any questions about the nutrition program, please feel free to reach out. Exotic is one muscle building machine. When I saw his video, I said to Kate that we need to investigate into this bull. Then we found out that he was a ½ french bull out of the 7X donor female at Pro Char Charolais. Now we need this bull. After trying to buy possession and not being able to achieve him, we settled on just buying semen. The calf crop is impressive and again will give you that different pedigree.

We purchased Winchester from Pro-Char Charolais to run in our heifer pen and what a job he has done for us. Winchester was recently purchased by CK Sparrow Farms and will continue his consistency in calving ease. We probably didn’t realize when we bought Winchester, how great a female maker he would become. The Winchester females are simply awesome. The whole sire group is consistent in their moderate frame, easy doing ability, sound structure and are already laying down that cattleman’s udder. The Winchesters calved efficiently and are great mother cows, with ample milk and beautiful udder structures. Winchesters are such functional females that can do so much for the industry.

We bought Braxton because we believed he had the potential to take our cow herd to the next level. By teaming up with Beck Farms, SK, we were able to purchase this breed leader who was the highest selling bull in Canada that year. Braxton is one of the most impressive bulls we have ever walked at Steppler Farms. Braxton is so fluid in his stride; he is quiet, deep chested, huge hipped, with perfect structure, and he comes from a tremendous cow. The calving ease in this sire is second to none. The calves have tremendous amount of vigour at birth and never look back. The Braxton females are simply awesome.

Game Changer was the high selling red factor bull coming out of the HTA program. He’s has absolutely stamped his calves with that long spine, correct structure and muscle mass. Game Changer has performed great for us here, but with the addition of the Simmental breed, the drive to produce red factor Charolais bulls isn’t as relevant for us. What a great opportunity to buy a proven herd bull!!

Get Your Bull Settled In:

Bulls can sometimes have difficulties settling into a new environment. Different feed, management practices, and climate all contribute to new stressors for the bull. If you want your bull to reach his highest breeding potential, it is important to get him a few weeks prior to breeding to make this transition easier. If you don’t have any extra pen or space, sometimes this just isn’t a reality and a box stall in the old barn doesn’t count as a pen for the bull.

Evaluate Breeding And Re-Evaluate His Breeding Soundness Throughout The Season:

With yearlings and virgin two-year olds, we need to make sure they can effectively breed a cow. Time and patience are essential! If your breeding season happens on grass, this evaluation becomes more difficult, but due diligence will aid in preventing lost time and open cows. Take the time to evaluate the bull throughout the breeding season. If you suspect an issue, contact me immediately. Back up bulls are always on hand.

Recheck Semen And Re-Evaluate Breeding Soundess The Following Year:

Leading up to the next breeding season, it is important to recheck semen and the bull’s ability to breed. Injuries and damage from our cold winters can greatly affect the bull’s breeding potential.

Pull Your Bull And Provide Proper Nutrition Accordingly:

The most important management practice for ensuring your bulls’ next year service is to pull them from the cows. All bulls will perform better and recondition more efficiently if they are pulled and fed the proper nutrition to regain lost weight, grow and put on needed muscle for the following year. Work with your nutritionist to develop the right ration for your bulls. Having your younger bulls away from your mature bulls is also well worth the investment. Younger bulls can be built up more effectively and the mature bulls won’t get over conditioned.

Semen Testing Bulls After The Sale

With such an early bull sale we have decided to semen test the bulls after the bull sale. With the majority of the bulls not going to work until end of the spring, a later semen check date will evaluate the fertility of the bull at the correct time. Two dates have already been booked for semen evaluation: end of March and end of April. We will also semen check any bull immediately after the sale if requested. All bulls will have scrotal measurement on sale day.

Our Program

Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have a short, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred for efficiencies and calculated matings. We try to get 95% of the cows exposed in the first cycle with a 70- 75% conception rate. Correct, accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heat detection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Once the cows go through the 28 day AI program, the herd bulls go to work. Since most of the cows have conceived already, the herd bulls are ultimately clean up bulls. The mature bulls easily travel throughout the last 32 days of the breeding program. All females are pregnancy checked early in the summer and culls and opens are taken out.

We maintain a high and rigorous herd health regime as outlined below. This enables us to have a successful breeding program and ensures potential buyer the high health standards of these sale cattle.

Terms and Conditions

TERMS OF SALE The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association unless otherwise stated. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

PEDIGREE ESTIMATES: Pedigree Estimates (PE) are created on the projected mating of the animal’s sire and dam based on averages of the two, creating estimated calues that do not hold the same accuracy of actual EPDs issued from the association and should be used as such.

HEALTH: The health of the herd is excellent. All cattle in this sale is free from disease or defect to the best of our knowledge. We guarantee that all sale cattle will ship to Canada or mainland United States. All cattle are on a full herd health program. Our veterinarian is available for consult upon request.

GUARANTEE: Each animal becomes the purchaser’s risk immediately after the animal is sold. All animals in this sale will be sold under the terms and guarantees set forth by the Canadian Charolais Association with regard to health, freedom from defects and from both reproductive and specific genetic unsoundness.

INSURANCE: We cannot stress strongly enough the importance of insuring your purchases immediately following the sale. Your purchased animal is your sole responsibility as soon as the sale concludes.

ERRORS: All announcements at sale time, written or oral, supersede any written material in the catalogue.

LIABILTITY: All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.
