WHAT IS TABAKALERA ?
_
After 90 years as a tobacco factory, Tabakalera reopened its doors in 2015 as an International Centre for Contemporary Culture. Tabakalera’s aim is to foster and disseminate creation, which is the purpose behind its services and cultural activities. Besides the cultural project, Tabakalera is also a cultural ecosystem of private initiatives and institutions, as well as a public venue for citizen enjoyment.

TABAKALERA CULTURAL PROGRAMME
_
EXHIBITION PROGRAMME An international project These are the most visible part of the cultural project. They reflect the centre's editorial approach and position Tabakalera on the international network of contemporary art centres. As a creation centre, most of the exhibitions focus on new production.
CULTURE FOR ALL, A PUBLIC PROGRAMME 15/04/2016 > 26/06/2016
Tabakalera is a centre for contemporary culture with two purposes: to be a production centre, and to offer a public programme of activities. These two aims run through every part of the project, which revolves around creation, reflection-based training and exhibitions. As well as being a place which supports artists and creators along their professional path, it also puts together a programme for a diverse audience and provides routes to the general public for outreach and access to contemporary culture and creation.
AIDS Anarchive Curated by the Equipo re collective, this exhibition project is the first to address the cultural practices around the HIV/AIDS crisis which have evolved outside of the USA and central and northern Europe.
08/07/2016 > 28/10/2016
Yto Barrada The first solo exhibition in Spain by French-Moroccan artist Yto Barrada. The exhibition includes videos, photographs and sculptures from her latest collection, as well as some older pieces.
21/10/2016 > 05/02/2017
Agency of Living Organisms A group exhibition bringing together works by 13 local and international artists. The works and artists selected for the exhibition use different perspectives to take a closer look at the footprint that humans are leaving on the planet. Nature is being moulded by humanity and taking on a new shape. Exhibition curated by Pauline Doutreluingne.

CINEMA AND AUDIOVISUAL ART Supporting contemporary cinema
PUBLIC PROGRAMMES A space for generating critical thought
The Tabakalera cinemas focus on contemporary films, those that are not usually screened at conventional cinemas. They offer a variety of films from Wednesday to Sunday, meetings between producers and the public, residency programmes and projects such as EIECINE (International Film Students Meeting), among others.
The public programmes are designed to promote study, reflection and debate on the modern world. They are usually designed as seminars, workshops, presentations, screenings or talks.
_PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS Stimulants: circulation and euphoria
_PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS Laboratories Audiovisual workshops offering practical and theoretical sessions on cinema and audiovisual art, delivered by local and international media professionals. The workshops complement the cinema programme and provide a space for thinking and making films and audiovisual art.
FOCUS Film programme involving internationally renowned auteurs. The initiative arose from the need to find complete works from important contemporary film-makers. The directors are invited to take part in the programme, enabling us to get as close as possible to their creative process through presentations, talks and workshops.
8 _
Drawing on the history of the former tobacco factory Tabakalera, the project takes modern stimulants such as tobacco, coffee, sugar and cacao as a starting point for exploring contemporary culture and thought. Stimulants: circulation and euphoria has launched these and other questions into the public domain through various programmes that will run to the end of 2017, including conferences, public debates, seminars, expository essays, concerts and publications.
Architecture and public space A programme of conferences, screenings and workshops with professionals which looks at the relationship between architecture, urbanism, culture, art and politics and generates a conversation with social agents and citizens.

TABAKALERA: PUBLIC VENUE
_
One of Tabakalera´s main features is its use as a public venue. The building itself is like a city, with its venues and streets. The areas have no specific use and are provided to citizens and visitors as an indoor place for walking, playing, resting, meeting friends or holding work meetings and enjoy the possibilities that Tabakalera offers. This wide variety of uses also make this place special, turning each visit into something different and opening doors to surprises. Tabakalera already has a cafe, pizzeria and bar on the centre's main floor. There are plans to open a 4-star hotel with 43 bedrooms –with one floor allocated to Tabakalera's resident artists– and a restaurant in the building's prism.
