Motivate your child towards academic
mind matters
success
Motivation can be seen as the love of learning, the love of challenge. Motivation is often more important than initial ability in determining our success. A child with positive academic motivation has a desire to learn, likes learning-related activities and believes that school is important. Positive academic motivation not only helps a child succeed in school, but also help the child to see that learning is rewarding and important in all aspects of their life. The good news is that there are many things that parents can do to increase their child’s academic motivation. As a parent, you play a huge role in fostering your child's academic success. From helping with homework, to encouraging reading, your attitude toward learning can set your child on a lifelong course toward academic success. Positive parentchild relationships form an important background for academic motivation. The following ideas can help you increase your child’s motivation to learn. •
•
•
•
4
If you want your child to be motivated, don’t limit learning just to the wall of his classroom. Although the skills he is learning there are crucial to his intellectual and social growth, your child needs your support to open up the world of ideas. His renewed joy in discovery will transfer to his schoolwork.
•
Celebrate achievements no matter how small. Offer positive reinforcement, not presents or sweets, but rather interactive activities that will inspire him to keep learning and challenging himself.
•
Fill your child's world with reading. Take turns reading with your older child, or establish a family reading time when everyone reads their own book. Demonstrate how important reading is to you by filling your home with printed materials: books, newspapers, even posters and placemats with words on them.
Encourage positive family relationships and responsibility
•
Provide reasonable structure to help children become independent and responsible.
•
Teach your child to be responsible at home by assigning chores and maintaining expectations for proper behavior. Selfdiscipline at home can transfer to schoolrelated learning. Take time to do fun things with your child individually and as a family.
•
Have regular conversations with your child and provide time to listen to his or her interests and concerns.
•
Praise your child for both trying hard and for being successful. All children need to know when they are doing well.
•
Model the importance of learning
•
Let your child know that you think learning is important and is the central purpose of
Show enthusiasm for your child’s intersts and encourage him to explore subjects that fascinate him. If he loves horses, offer stories/ books about horses or challenge him to find facts about horses in the ecyclopedia or internet. Help your child organize his school papers and assignments so he feels in control of his work. Don’t try to take it over or do everything for him. If his task seems too daunting, he'll spend more time worrying than learning. Check in with him regularly to make sure he's not feeling overwhelmed.
aDVERTISE FROM AS LITTLE school. Talk with your child about your interests and likes. Talk with your child about school and show an interest in what goes on at school. Talk with your child about career interests and how school is related to a career. •
Teach habits that encourage learning
•
Have a set routine for schoolwork.Your child should know when he is expected to work on schoolwork each day.
•
Set up a place to study where your child has the needed supplies and as much quiet as necessary.
•
Make sure your child finishes schoolwork at home before doing things that could distract your child from doing school work.
•
Limit things that interfere with learning, such as watching TV or playing video games.
•
Help your child become expert at something, such as dinosaurs, sports, whatever, and use those things to encourage learning.
•
Provide opportunities for success to encourage your child to try new things.
•
Work with your child’s teacher to enhance academic motivation
•
Show your child that you respect his or her teacher. Do not handle disagreement with the teacher in front of your child.
•
Talk regularly with the teacher so that you and the teacher know what is going on in school and at home.
•
Develop a system to give reinforcements at home for working hard in school.
•
Children need to get enough sleep (9-10 hours a day); they need to eat breakfast and balanced meals; they need to avoid over-consumption of sugar and processed foods; and they need exercise each day. Help your child to practice good posture and deep breathing.
•
•
Be patient. Children's motivation generally improves when parents take the steps discussed. However, patience may be required. Children need the gift of time to develop the maturity that allows them to complete homework assignments and chores with a minimum of supervision. Make sure that your child knows that you love him for what he is, not for what he does!

IRON LADY Spinach and other Iron rich foods may not give your child superhuman strength to fight off villains like Popeye's nemesis Bluto, but these leafy green vegetables and other iron containing foods can help your child to fight of infections. Children who do not eat enough iron containing foods may become tired, faint, pale, uninterested in play and may complain of headaches and often have low appetites. To improve blood iron levels it is recommended that your child should eat at least two or more iron rich food every day (see iron rich foods below). While children need less dietary iron than adults, getting their daily dietary dose is important to stay healthy. Kids need food rich in iron to produce healthy red blood cells. These provide oxygen for all of their cellular growth and development activity including brain development and healthy grow. Fortunately, plenty of child-friendly iron foods are inexpensive and easy to prepare. Iron needs fluctuate with age: - ages 1 to 3 years: 7mg /day - ages 4 to 6 years: 6 mg / day - ages 7 to 10 years: 9 mg /day - ages 11 to 14 years: 11 mg /day
How Our Body Uses Iron in Food
When we eat food with iron, iron is absorbed into the body mainly through the upper part of the small intestine. There are two types of dietary iron. Haem iron is found in animal products such as red meat, chicken and fish, and non-haem iron is found in plant foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals and green leafy vegetables.
6
The iron in meat, chicken and fish (haem iron) is better absorbed than the non-haem iron. The absorption of non-haem iron is increased greatly when a food containing vitamin C is eaten at the same meal. Foods rich in haem iron can help to absorb iron from non-haem sources too.
What are the best sources of iron?
Foods which contain haem iron include: • Lean red meats such as beef, lean mince meat, lamb. ostrich • Offal meats such as liver and kidney. • Chicken, pork (including ham), fish and shellfish. • Pate or fish paste. Popular meals that are rich in iron include pizza with cooked Ham, chicken Stew and spaghetti with meat and tomato sauce. Beef and bean wrap is an easy high in Iron meal.
If you can get your kids to eat beef, chicken or turkey liver, even small servings will give their diets huge mineral boosts. Foods which contain non-haem iron include: • Iron-fortified breakfast cereals (check the label to see if iron is added) • Oats porridge. • Wholemeal/wholegrain breads and crackers • Dried peas, beans and legumes e.g. lentils, baked beans, soybeans, kidney beans and tofu. • Leafy green vegetables e.g. spinach, parsley, broccoli , brussel sprouts
• • • • • •
Eggs. health Dried fruit (e.g. prunes and raisons) notes Peanut butter and nuts (whole nuts are not recommended for children under three). Milo or Ovaltine Tahini and hummus. Dark chocolate
Peas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and spinach can be eaten as sides or "hidden" in favourite pasta meals or sauces. Eggs is an easy, healthy meal, try to give your child an egg every day. Raisins and trail mix (from Safari) make good snacks that are rich in dietary iron and ideal for lunch boxes. Vitamin C helps the body to absorb more iron. Foods that are high in vitamin C include some fruits (melon, strawberries, pineapple, citrus fruits, quava, kiwi fruit and tomato) and some vegetables (broccoli, capsicum, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts).
Include a serving of vitamin C rich fruit and vegetables with meals to help the body absorb more iron. Here are some ideas to try: • • • • •
Fruit on breakfast cereal. Sprinkle raisons over oats Vegetables or a salad with meals. Fruit for dessert. A small glass of diluted 100% juice with meals.
TO AVOID:
Avoid giving your child tea or coffee with meals because this can prevent the absorption of iron from the foods.
Hope your child your have a healthy iron rich body! NATALIE GROBLER LIVEWELL DIETICIANS 071 246 0357

Mom's Notes went to visit one of Nu Light's recent projects on the Uitsig Estate in Nelspruit. The spectacular garden comes to life after dark and the energy efficient patio and garden lightning is switched on! The client, Dr. Maas and his wife, Dianne, had been searching for the perfect patio lighting solution since building their house 7 years ago! It was with their new additions to their house last year that they first knocked on Nu Light's door for assistance with their patio, and the lighting around their newly constructed pool terrace.
They required lighting for subtle atmosphere that would suit their very slim and contemporary veranda pillars, yet still provide enough practical light to see snakes (frequent visitors). Around the pool, Dianne wanted to create an outdoor space where one could entertain effortlessly and safely, while enjoying the beauty of the garden at night. Nu Light succeeded beautifully in fulfilling these needs, even the pool sparkles with "nu light"!
switch & save!
Nu Light can help you switch your lighting over to cost-effective and planet friendly LED options. The process need not be intimidating or expensive. Simply ask the professionals. Nu Light's consultation will ensure that you not only save money with the correct LED options, but also choose the lighting option best suited to your lighting needs and physical space to be lit.
Mrs. Maas was also very pleased with the added benefit of cost-effective energy-saving LED lights, which Nu Light recommended. After switching over to LED, their electricity consumption has dropped considerably. Dianne explains that the LED lights last much longer and can withstand power dips (either due to the municipal dips or power tools used on site) with ease.
Dianne explains that Willa and Linda's attention to detail, exceptional service and extraordinary efforts combined to create the outdoor living space they always wanted. Now, the Maas family eagerly waits for summer so they can take it outside every evening!

Poolware With sunny skies and short winters, it comes as no surprise that swimming pools are seen to be a necessity, rather than a luxury locally - especially in the hot and humid Lowveld summer. Poolware in Nelspruit will share some points around swimming pools - from installation to maintenance, safety and more for the following six editions of Mom's Notes.
Mom's Notes had the pleasure to meet the husband and wife team behind Poolware and would like to introduce the friendly couple to our readers too. Tertius and Tersia van Aarde proudly states that they have been Lowvelders for a long time. They are a happy, friendly family - complete with two young boys in primary school. They "dived" into the pool business with passion and conviction when the opportunity arose and they're making a splash indeed. Poolware is about personal service says Tersia. A customer to their business premises in Silva street, Nelspruit can expect a warm welcome, friendly and knowledgable service, completed by a wide range 14
of products, services and advice related to swimming pools, jacuzzi's, and even koi-ponds. crib notes Accommodation:
Knowing the milestones of your baby's vision development (and what you can do to help it along) can insure your child is seeing properly and enjoying his world to the fullest. We will continue this developmental journey to that of primary school level with Grant and Stacy Freeman. This Month we are going to look at the vision for a child from birth to 6 Months of age. Early detection and treatment are essential to preventing vision conditions that have the potential to cause permanent loss of vision. Screening by the pediatrician or other primary care physician is important at birth and during the first 6 months of life when the visual system is highly susceptible to interference. However, screening this population has been problematic, leading to under detection of significant refractive error and strabismus (squint)
Let’s start with a few definitions:
Visual acuity: the clarity or clearness of vision Accommodation: the increase in thickness and shape of the eye’s lens in order to focus an image on the retina Stereopsis: when both eyes work together to enable you to see 3 dimensional or depth perception. There are different theories about the visual acuity of infants. Some literature says that a baby has adult like vision at 6 months and others, at the ages of 3-5 years. If I watch my little one I personally think that their vision is adult like at 6 months of age. How do you tell if your little one has poor vision? This is a difficult one as your baby can’t tell you that they are unable to see.
The sure signs that your infant might not have good vision are: • • •
A baby that is unresponsive to the parents Abnormal eye movements are often the first symptom of significant visual impairment Intense eye rubbing
For the first month of your little ones life they are unable to focus on an object further or closer than 30cm. It is thought that the distance from your face to where you hold your baby when you breast feed is the distance that they are able to focus on in the first month. So when that little one is lying in your arms staring at your face they can see you clearly. They have adult like accommodation at 3-4 months of age which means that at this age their eyes can focus an object no matter how far or close it is from them.
Stereopsis: Sensory fusion is present at birth so from the get go your little one will not have double vision but will see singularly. Average stereoscopic vision development if 3-5 months.
Colour Vision:
The Fovea (part of the eye responsible for colour vision) is immature in infants. Newborns are unable to make colour discriminations. At about 7 weeks babies distinguish colours and at 2 months of age they have normal colour vision. Below is a table showing at what age a baby will more than likely be able to fixate on an object and do certain eye movements etc.
Skill Age Fixation to: Lights Faces Visual objects Auditory objects
3 months Birth 3 months 3 months
Eye Movements: Horizontal Vertical up gaze Vertical down gaze
Birth 4-6 weeks 3 months
Stimulus (that babies react to) Faces Birth
Penlight 3 months Pursuits (ability to follow an object) 6-8 weeks Coordinated head-eye movements 3 months
And lastly. Some babies appear to have a squint, most of the time it is either because their accommodative system hasn’t developed fully or in some cases the folds of skin on the inner sides of the eye are larger than average making the child look like his eyes turn inwards when in actual fact they are perfectly fine.

MUCUS MATTERS Believe it or not, but mucus is good. Yes, sniffles and snot are signs that your little one’s body is functioning correctly and activating its healing ability. The tissues, tantrums and tears might be difficult to swallow, but it’s a vital part of body function. However, excessive mucus is an excellent medium for organism growth, which may lead to infection if left untreated.
Origin Mucous membranes act as “internal skin and line all hollow organs and passages. When irritated by foreign or allergic substances, the membranes produce mucus to capture the “invaders and help work them out of the body via sneezing or a running nose. Mucous build-up most commonly affects the throat, nasal passages and lungs.
Triggers Apart from environmental factors like pollen, dust, cigarette smoke, etc., mucous production is also promoted by food. Common food allergens that stimulate mucous production include dairy, wheat, soy, corn, potatoes, cabbage, bananas, food additives and preservatives. Avoid if intake worsens symptoms.

Colour-coded t $MFBS – Often related to bouts of allergy and mostly accompanied by sneezing. Your little one’s nose will become red and painful as a result of all the wiping required. t 8IJUF UP HSBZ – Clogs the upper airways and may lead to bouts of croup or bronchitis. This mucus is also thick and sluggish, and accompanied by a tendency towards sinus congestion. t :FMMPX – Also sticky or slimy and generally accompanied by skin rashes and eczema. t (SFFO – Usually caused by persistent and recurrent mucous build-up. Lumpy and considered to indicate infection.

White blood cells colour mucus. When fighting an “invader, clea mucus is produced. It usually thickens and turns yellow/green as the infection progresses. White blood cells are responsible for the change in colour and texture – the amount of cells present in the mucus increases as the infection develops.

DO WE NEED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR MY CHILD?
With the forthcoming National Occupational Therapy (OT) awareness week from 8-12 October the occupational therapists of the Lowveld would like share more about what we do. We all know that we should not compare our children with other children or their siblings. But let’s be honest: WE ALL DO! We expect our babies and children to do certain things at certain times, like smiling, making sounds, being able to be content, sleep and feed well, start rolling, sitting and crawling and eventually walking.
We observe their play and social behaviour and – compare. We see that other children can play for longer periods, they can adjust in many new situations, have no problem with a variety of foods, they love being on the jungle gym and can ride a tricycle or bicycle. Maybe our child is withdrawing from others, clinging to mother, having sudden emotional outbursts, is too busy, or is avoiding a lot of situations and things. An international expert in early detection and intervention once said: If a mom is concerned about the development of her child, we specialists must realize that 70% of the time she will be right! If you are concerned, you can consult an OT. We help you find out if and why there is a developmental delay. Is it the muscles or the nerves? Is it from the brain due to something that has happened during pregnancy, at birth or through handling? Is it the child’s personality, learnt behaviour or because of certain influences from the environment? Or is it nothing to worry about? Consulting an OT may give you, as parent, an objective perspective of your child’s function and abilities according to international standards. Occupational Therapy provides services for children with a wide range of needs from those children who are having difficulty developing skills, to those who simply need their skills refined. Clients include children with sensory integration difficulties, neuro-developmental delays, attention difficulties, specific learning difficulties, syndromes such as Down Syndrome or physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy and autistic spectrum disorders. The goal of treatment is to develop , adapt or improve skills, needed for everyday independence through purposeful activities. Both children with or without a disability may receive therapy. Occupational Therapy is beneficial when there are concerns regarding sensory processing (organisation of sensory information from our body and environment), gross motor (big body movements) or fine motor
(small hand and finger muscle movements) and visual perceptual skills (ability to understand what we see). OT’s train at medical schools and have a thorough medical background. We have good knowledge of the human body, its functions and how it’s used in daily activities. Being registered at the health professions council, therapy can be claimed back from the medical aid (from day-to-day benefits). As OT’s we were trained to analyze activities and grade them. We ‘break down’ specific activities into simpler steps and step-by-step help the child to accomplish each step, till he/she can do the whole activity alone with success. It is advisable to contact an OT as soon as you suspect a delay in the development of your child or have any concerns, like a strange pencil grip or extra ordinary behaviour which does not make sense to you as a parent. OT should not be seen as a quick fix, as it addresses the fundamental problems of a child according to the sequence of development. Let us assume a teacher refers a child because of a poor pencil grip or inability to catch a ball or balance on 1 leg, the OT will do an in depth assessment to establish the root of the problem and then start working at that level.Therapy is therefore, not always immediately directed at the presenting problem but builds up to it. Unfortunately there is a stigma attached to the word therapy and parents assume that their child might have a major problem or disability and therefore ignore their worries and hope that the problem will solve itself. In reality approximately 20% of cases referred to an OT, don’t need formal therapy but only minor adjustments or guidance to get back on track. AS MOMS, WE WANT TO URGE YOU TO ACT ON YOUR MATERNAL INSTINCT. If something bothers you or makes you wonder – rather ask about “unnecessary” concerns than not ask at all!
Finding an OT can be a daunting process. One doesn’t always know where to go and what to look for. Some of us work centre-based, others home-based. Some of us work in schools, others in private practice. Some of us have done special courses because we have special fields of interest. Part 4 Mom's Financial Notes
OWN YOUR LIFE - PLAN AHEAD "Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other Plans" John Lennon.
Cancer –the leading cause of Critical illness claims during 2011
Don’t let a Critical Illness derail your plans for the future.
Research shows that up to 90% of cancers are caused by environmental factors. This includes lifestyle factors which account for up to 40% of cancers. One of the major lifestyle factors is body weight.
A critical illness is an illness or accident that creates a major health crisis and becomes a lifechanging event for the survivor and her/his family. For the majority of individuals, there are financial implications associated with experiencing a critical illness. Although many people have a medical aid which can be used to fund surgical procedures, hospital stays and medication, this is usually not sufficient to assist someone through the whole recovery process. After all, medical aids are not designed to pay for the cost associated with adjustments in lifestyle a critical illness may necessitate. Liberty’s Living Lifestyle is a critical illness benefit – it pays a lump sum in the event of the life assured being diagnosed with a critical illness – in other words lifestyle adjustment costs. Liberty Life paid a total of R266 million in critical illness claims in 2011, of which 35% was paid to women. • 9% of these claims were paid to people within the age group of 20 to 30 • 60% of these claims were paid to people within the age group of 30 to 50 • 30 % of these claims were paid to people within the age group of 50 to 70 • 1% of these claims were paid to people older than 70
24
“Maintaining a healthy body weight throughout life may be one of the best ways to protect against Cancer” - World Cancer Research Fund, 2007 Out of all Critical Illness claims for both men & women: • 38% were for Cancer, • 28% for Cardiac disease, • 17% a combination of other illnesses • and 5% for strokes. • 16% of all claims due to Cancer was for Breast Cancer. In the majority of cases where breast cancer has been diagnosed at an early stage instances have proved to be non-fatal.This does not mean to say that in all instances there are no adjustments in lifestyles to be made. Expensive treatment is a fact of life and hopefully medical aids will cover a major part of the actual costs of treatment. During this treatment, the patient will more than likely spend substantial time away from work with the resulting loss of income, or perhaps not
OWN YOUR LIFE be able to perform the roll of mother and home keeper for a while, necessitating the need to hire housekeepers or nannies. At a time when peace of mind is required in the convalescence process, someone not financially prepared for such a tragedy would experience huge stress. We all know the importance of the role that a Mum plays in everyone lives, not only emotionally but in these days financially as well, can you afford not to give the above facts some serious thought and do something about securing the well being of your family. We are all aware of the invasive nature of cancer and if not diagnosed and treated early the spread to other organs can be rapid and fatal, for this reason we at Liberty urge you to undergo regular screening for the sake of your health and the wellbeing of your family. Mums, we urge you to Own Your Lives. Written for Mom's Notes by Tony Page for Liberty Life Nelspruit

The Water Cycle The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or H2O cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth.Water can change states among liquid, vapour, and ice at various places in the water cycle. Although the balance of water on Earth remains fairly constant over time, individual water molecules can come and go, in and out of the atmosphere. The water moves from one reservoir to another, such as from river to ocean, or from the ocean to the atmosphere, by the physical processes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, and subsurface flow. In so doing, the water goes through different phases: liquid, solid, and gas.
Evaporation:
Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapour or steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air. Do plants sweat? Well, sort of.... people perspire (sweat) and plants transpire. Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water out of their leaves. Transpiration gives evaporation a bit of a hand in getting the water vapour back up into the air.
The earth has a limited amount of water. That water keeps going around and around and around and around and (well, you get the idea) in what we call the "Water Cycle". This cycle is made up of a few main parts:
Condensation:
Water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. This is called condensation. You can see the same sort of thing at home... pour a glass of cold water on a hot day and watch what happens. Water forms on the outside of the glass. That water didn't somehow leak through the glass!
It actually came from the air. Water vapour in the warm air turns back into liquid when it touches the cold glass. Ever wonder where dew and frost come from?
Precipitation:
Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, or snow.
Collection:
When water falls back to earth as precipitation, it may fall back in the oceans, lakes or rivers or it may end up on land. When it ends up on land, it will either soak into the earth or become part of the “ground water” that plants and animals use to drink or it may run over the soil and collect in the oceans, lakes or rivers where the cycle starts.
The same process happens over and over ... and over again; that is why it’s called the water cycle!
