Dear Mom, In our first edition of Mom's Notes for 2013 we focus on beginning things the right way. Although the school term is already in full swing, it's never too late to kick-start healthy routines at home. Cora Breytenbach offers us some helpful hints on how to do just that on page 6. The first school term is packed with sports activities. To make sure that little active bodies get all they need, our Mom's Notes dietician has summarised some important tips on what to give your child before and after a sports event (see page 8). With so much fun in the sun, the Lowveld CANSA Care Centre reminds us about the importance of sunscreen on page 12!

READY STEADY, ROUTINE! After a long holiday and after the excitement of a new school year has waned - it is time to establish the routines that will not only make Mom’s life easier, but will also benefit children in more ways than one. Routine establishes so many aspects of healthy living, good habits and good behaviour. Children need and even desire routine – even if they don’t know it. There are plenty of ways to get them going by building a schedule that works for the whole family. Children don’t have a lot of control in their lives and it can give them a sense of organization, stability and comfort. That, in turn, should help develop better behaviour and some sense of personal control – always a challenge, especially with young children. How to set up a routine: •
Start to build the routine around the times when family members wake, eat and sleep.
•
Be realistic and allow enough time for your children to wash and dress, especially if this is new for them.
•
Add in extras to the routine which you know your family needs; chore time, one-to-one time if you have more than one child, homework time and any out of school clubs or classes.
•
Pay close attention to night time: if bags are packed, sports stuff is ready, school clothes are laid out and water bottles filled there’ll be less to do in the morning. School age children can help with all of these things.
•
If you can, remember to rotate duties with your partner, especially the bedtime routine as this will increase your child’s trust in both parents.
•
Get as much input as you can from your family and talk it through with other carers. A routine which works for everyone will be much easier to stick to.
•
6
If there’s one activity, like toothbrushing, which is a nightly sticking point, set up a Reward Chart to deal with it.
Doing things like bathing and brushing teeth as part of morning or night time routines, can help establish good personal hygiene and health habits. Having built in chore time somewhere in the week or day, having them help pick up at the end of dinner, tidy up the house at the end of the day or playing, establishes responsibility and work ethic. MORNING RITUALS Getting up and going can be hard whether young or old, kid or parent, in school or not. No matter how getting started in the morning; if you have established a solid routine, you will have an easier flow to the day. Sticking to a similar wake-up call could mean all the difference between having a good day and having a bad one. Think about it, even if it is obvious, if the kids are used to waking up at 6.30 and for some reason rise an hour earlier or later you now need to figure out how to add an hour to the day or squeeze in a day’s worth of routine in 60 less minutes. The implications are worse if the kids are in school or there is something taking place that morning. Having a solid morning ritual, maintains a good stress level for everyone. MEALTIMES Mealtime are a perfect way to establish good eating habits. Always eat breakfast, and a good one. Lunch and dinner are more of a given, but specific times set a structure for kids so there are no surprises. Set standards for when snacking takes place and what kinds of foods are eaten. Don’t indulge in food whenever a child wants something. The results should equal good eating and eating habits. Mealtime is always a good time for family interaction! Always try to find time to sit down together, preferably at a table, to talk and eat. Additionally, have the children help get dinner started, set the table and clean up afterwards to teach the them responsibility. BEDTIME Getting the children to sleep, whether for a nap or for the night, is one of the greatest challenges for parents. A consistent bedtime routine is important for the establishment of a regular sleep-awake cycle. A regular schedule allows the child to be
physio-logically ready for sleep at the same hour each evening. •
Be sure to establish a regular hour for both going to bed and for waking up. These times should be changed only for special occasions. The hour just before bed should be a quiet, relaxing time for the child. Thus it is not a time for playing rough with the child or watching scary TV programs.
•
A warm bath can help to prepare a child for sleep.
•
Children will go to bed more readily when they receive advance notice from their parents that bedtime is approaching. Give an advance warning 5 to 10 minutes ahead of bedtime so the child can get ready for it.
•
Try to associate going to sleep with as much pleasure, affection and relaxation as possible. For example, you might read or tell a child a bedtime story, say an evening prayer, sing a goodnight song, or have a close intimate talk with the child after he/she is in bed. These bedtime rituals should be calm and relaxing.
•
•
Make it clear to the child when you give the goodnight kiss that this is the end of your interaction for the night. Leave the room without hesitation or uncertainty and, if necessary, state that you are not coming back. If the child whines or cries after you leave, try to ignore it. The key is to expect your child to go to bed at the same time each night and to firmly and confidently enforce the time for bed. A blanket or cuddly stuffed animal in bed can give the child much security as he/she makes the transition from wakefulness to sleep.
One of the best ways to prevent sleep disorders in the very young, is to be sure the child is getting plenty of affection from both parents. Do not give constant or intense criticism which will make the child feel uncertain of your love. Do not send you child to bed early as a punishment. Children tend to associate going to bed with punishment. A good sleep routine, can keep your child HAPPY!

Healthy eating & exercise for
young bodies School age is the perfect time for children to learn about healthy food, bodies and activity. Make this the year of moving more! Physical activity is a natural and lifelong part of healthy living. It can be as simple as riding a bike, playing tag, jumping rope or doing chores. Inactivity plays a major role in the development of obesity, whether it results from television and computer use, limited opportunities for physical activity, or safety concerns that prevent children from enjoying free play outdoors. The amount of physical activity they have in a day will be an important part of how much they need to eat. Children need a wide variety of foods for a well-balanced diet and when children are busy and active, snacking is important to keep energy levels high. It is important to keep young athletes strong and fit with healthy snacks, and with meal pre- and post training and events that provide the right nutrients at the right time. It’s also important to limit ingredients that will impede performance.
Healthy Snacks before Training Help your child to train at his/ her best. Fuel muscles with carbohydrates one to two hours before an athletic event or practice. Grains, such as pasta or whole wheat crackers such as Provitas are your best healthy snacks for exercise less than 60 minutes. 8
For a longer game or training session, you may need to add some protein to sustain energy Choose fruit or low-fat protein options such as milk, chicken, cottage cheese or yogurt. Avoid fatty foods (these slow digestion too much) and foods with high sugar content such as fizzy drinks, sweets and sports drinks before exercise. These cause a spike in blood sugar. If sugar levels then drop quickly during athletic events, your child could become sluggish or even dizzy. Meal Ideas 1-2 hours before the event: • Whole-grain bread, crackers, tortillas, or pretzels • Wholegrain cereals • Brown Rice with chicken and veggies • Pasta with grated cheese and cooked ham • Low-fat cheese with crackers, yoghurt, or milk • Snack ideas pre – event to boost energy levels: • Hydration is important- so keep the water flowing • Bananas (cut in half for younger kids so they can peel and eat more quickly) • Orange slices • Clementines • Grapes • Small slices or chunks of melon • Apple wedges (sprinkle with orange juice to prevent browning) • 125 – 150 ml of Clear fruit juices such as apple juice- Try this during training first to ensure it is safe on the stomach.
Healthy Snacks for after a Game or Workout Immediately following intense practice, kids need lots of fluids to replace what they’ve lost to perspiration. Milk (including Milo) and water are good choices.
summer ...
tasty treats ! If they’ve really been sweating and/or it is extremely hot outside, athletes also need sodium and potassium, which is why sports drinks contain these electrolytes. Finally, carbohydrates and proteins help kids refuel muscles and re-energize. While a little sugar is OK, don’t go overboard; it’s not wise to reinforce the idea that sweets are a good way to reward yourself. Post-Athletic event snack suggestions: • Fresh fruit • Frozen yoghurt • Dried fruit • Cereal Bars Such as Jungle Oats “light” bars or Oatsli or Nestle Cereal Bars • Digestive Biscuits • Provitas or Oat cakes with Peanut butter or Edam cheese or low fat cream cheese • Low fat Yogurt • Popcorn or pretzels • Homemade Bran Muffins with low fat spread • Safari Trail mix
REMEMBER: Families are key for modelling food choices, healthy eating, and leisure activities for their children. Parents influence children’s environment by choosing nutrient-rich foods, having family meals, offering regular snacks and spending time together in physical activity, all of which can be critical in weight management. ,To get your tailor made diet plan to enhance performance, contact a dietician. the secret to a
BRIGHT NEW YEAR!
home work
NuLight lighting specialists in Nelspruit would like to share their secret to a healthier and more productive 2013. why whiter & brighter is better There is more to light than flicking a switch. Correct lighting can have a dramatic impact on your and your family’s health. Recent studies over the past few years have showed that insufficient, or yellow-coloured light, can be associated with: • eye strain and headaches • tiredness • lack of concentration • increased likelihood of accidents • increased appetite • depression - similar or associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).1
INTRODUCING Skywhite To ensure that you and your family make the most of the new year, make the most of your indoor lighting. NuLight offers a unique new product that delivers the closest light quality to that of brain and mood-boosting natural daylight. The remarkable “daylight” quality of these flourescent fixtures are especially perfect for: • study/homework stations • computer/craft corners • kitchens • offices • workshops/garages SkyWhite is a range of fluorencent tubes and are available in standard sizes for most domestic and commercial applications. An energy-efficient version is currently being developed too.
seeing is believing Linda and Willie at NuLight are very excited about the SkyWhite lights because of the tangible benefits their customers will experience: • less eye-strain and headaches • increased concentration • increased productivity • enhanced mood A satisfied NuLight customer said: “Thanks for taking the initiative to introduce SkyWhite lights for our business. (Staff) immediately noticed the change and are less tired at the end of the day. In their own words, they “ ... feel more productive ...”. Regional managers were also impressed. ... the idea was to improve staff productivity and moral but also to create a client-friendly environment. “
THE BRIGHT-SIDE: COST Units are in high demand. Linda confided that they have sold more than 2000 since November 2012! Yet this revolutionary break-through in lighting design doesn’t cost much more than a normal flourescent equivalent.
To find out more Linda and Willie at NuLight will be more than happy to tell you more about SkyWhite and the benefits it holds for you and your family. Invest in healthy
productivity this year - invest in SkyWhite lights at NuLight. 1 A diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder was first proposed by Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal in 1984. Rosenthal wondered why he became sluggish during the (darker) winter months after moving from sunny South Africa to New York. He started experimenting increasing exposure to artificial light, and found this made a difference. (Source: Wikipedia)

THE TRUE STORY Every day, children are diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Help is often available at specialized
government hospitals, but for many children and their families the treatment they so desperately need is out of reach because the cost of transport to these facilities is simply not affordable. Where the treatment required is not available locally, we arrange and sponsor flight or bus tickets to a suitable medical facility.
ABOUT WINGS & WISHES Wings & Wishes was established in 2006 after a group of employees from Coca-Cola Sabco (Pty) Ltd identified the need in their community and started donating their frequent flyer miles as part of an internal Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The miles were committed to facilitating the transport of critically ill children and an accompanying adult to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, or an alternative appropriate medical facility, for treatment. The program is now a registered project under The Coca-Cola Sabco Community Foundation (IT 60/2007) and is run primarily by employee volunteers. The program is funded entirely through donations and is supported by many individuals and organizations in South Africa. As word of the program spreads, requests for flights and bus tickets are a daily occurrence and we are now assisting at least one child a day.

Purpose, Vision and Values
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Core Purpose:
Money Your donation of funds towards flight costs and essential provisions will make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. Funds raised are also used to provide alternative transport methods should a flight not be a suitable option.
Dedicated to transporting critically ill children to receive lifesaving medical treatment.
Vision:
Transport should never be a barrier for a child to reach lifesaving treatment, wherever they live.
Core Values:
Compassion, Minimal bureaucracy, Integrity We undertake to provide compassionate support immediately, with minimal bureaucracy, whilst maintaining the highest levels of integrity for the children and their families.
Criteria:
We assist children who do not have access to the required specialised medical treatment in their home towns and whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the transport to get them to a suitable medical facility. We also require written motivation from a medical practitioner explaining that the treatment required is not available at a local institution.
Children supported to date since 2006
1588 Flights sponsored to date since 2006
2840 Bus trips sponsored to date since 2006

Miles Your donation of frequent flyer air miles, in amounts of 20 000 or 30 000, will be used to purchase air tickets. Mercy We provide basic essentials for the children whilst in hospital. These Mercy Packs contain pyjama’s, soft toys, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, colouring in books and pencils, and any other comfort items to make their stay in hospital more bearable. Donations towards the Mercy Packs are gratefully received. Pledge a flight As flights are requested, the bookings are made, and the cost of the flight is invoiced to the individual or company who pledged the flight. Average cost of a flight is approximately R1300.

“Pa is in beheer”. Die kinders het al voor die eerste tentpen die grond tref, die swembad opgesoek en jy en mamma is getaak met die opslaan van die nege-man tent. Liefie trippel ongeduldig rond en weet, nou is NIE die tyd om te karring nie. “Pappa is in beheer!”
Your local outdoor & gas choice since 1984
“So James, are we braaing rump tonight? Look at my home made three-legged-braai-contraption with adjustable levels to cook the perfect piece of steak”. Net‘n ysmasjien en vrieskas kombinasie (as daar so iets is). Keeping up with the Jones’s op die kampeerterrein is harder werk as tent opslaan. Klop aan by Camp & Gas in Nelspruit vir goeie raad! Groete uit die Nes, Robin Jansma
