Real World

MATH

Statway™ = 2-Quarter Math Completion Did you know you could complete your math requirement in just two quarters – or even one? And did you know that in many career fields you’re more likely to need statistics than algebra? “Real world” math is useful to students going into fields like human services, communications, and political science, Statway™ is a two-quarter class fully equivalent to TCC’s college-level transferable statistics class (MATH& 146). Statway™ gives you the tools you need to dig into data, analyze trends, and figure out what the statistics are really saying. Talk to your advisor about Statway™ before you register for the traditional MATH 90 (Elementary Algebra)! Depending on quarterly offerings you may also have the option of taking Statway™ as a linked 10–credit course – completing your math requirement in just one quarter. Planning to transfer? We have direct-transfer agreements with local four-year schools in the state. Visit www.tacomacc.edu/statway to find out if Statway™ is a good fit for your transfer and career plans!

Harned Center Construction Underway Q: What’s with all the construction equipment at the south end of campus – and why is one of the parking lots closed? A: We’re building our new Harned Center for Health Careers! Our Allied Health programs will be moving into their new state-ofthe-art digs as soon as it’s complete. Meanwhile, we ask your patience during construction, while sections of Parking Lot C and D and some areas in the central quad are fenced off as construction sites.

College Bound Students:

Welcome to TCC! In 2007, thousands of low-income 7th and 8th graders across the state signed the “College Bound Pledge” – a contract stating that if the students kept their grades up and stayed out of trouble, the state would pay for their college education. In Fall 2012, Tacoma Community College welcomes its first group of students who signed up for the College Bound program as 8th-graders.

Jessica Ramirez is one of those students. She was an 8th grader at Woodbrook Middle School when one of her teachers gave her mom a College Bound flyer. Now she’s enrolled as a student at TCC, with plans to transfer to UWT and become a social worker. With help from the College Bound program, Jessica is confident that she can achieve her goals. “If I hadn’t had the scholarship, I don’t think I would have been able to attend college,” said Jessica. She considered enrolling at a four-year school, but chose TCC to save money and be near her family. “I have a baby sister who’s two, and I don’t want to miss out on that,” said Jessica. The TCC community is eager to help the College Bound students take advantage of this opportunity and succeed in classes, obtain their degrees, and realize their career goals. To Jessica and her fellow College Bound Students we’d like to say – welcome to TCC!
