New Opportunity for TCC
Paralegal Students
Q: What’s this about paralegals opening their own practices? You can’t practice law with just an AA degree – can you? Washington State recently passed a law to help people who can’t currently afford legal counsel. The new Limited Legal License Technician (LLLT) certification – the first of its kind in the United States – enables paralegals to independently assist clients with family law. As an LLLT certified paralegal, you won’t be arguing cases in court. But you could eventually open your own practice! “LLLTs are paralegals that are specialized,” says Jennifer Sorensen, chair of the Paralegal program at TCC. “They can help their clients fill out forms and assist with the process, but there are limitations, such as not being able to represent a client in court or negotiate with opposing counsel.” To get the LLLT certification, students need to take courses from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program. TCC is one of just four ABA approved community colleges in Washington.
Q: But there’s more to it than just completing an AA degree, right?
Veterans Services 253.566.5033 www.tacomacc.edu/veterans
FERPA
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
FERPA is a federal law that protects students’ yy yy yy yy
right to inspect and review education records right to seek the amendment of education records right to consent to the disclosure of education records, and right to obtain a copy of the school’s FERPA policy.
A complete copy of TCC’s written policies and guidelines governing the review, inspection, release, confidentiality and maintenance of a student’s education records is available upon request at either Enrollment Services or the Student Services Administration office.
If you complete TCC’s paralegal program, you’re most of the way there. You’ll also need to: • Take a class in Contract Law – it’s already an elective for the TCC program. • Take a class in Family Law, currently offered by the University of Washington. • Pass two certification exams. • Log 3,000 hours of substantive law experience as a paralegal.
Q: What if I want to be a paralegal… but not necessarily an LLLT? It doesn’t hurt to keep your options open! You might still choose to start out as a paralegal. But if you decide to pursue LLT certification later, you won’t have to start over if you got your degree at TCC!

Campus, Reinvented If you haven’t visited TCC’s Tacoma campus in the last few months, you’ll hardly recognize the place. Just in time for the college’s upcoming 50th anniversary, the past year has seen a complete revitalization of the heart of campus. The (nearly) completed Harned Center opens onto the new Campus Commons, a beautifully designed space that ties the center of campus together visually and serves as an outdoor activity hub. The new space also brings art into the open for public enjoyment. The Campus Commons includes the eye-catching five-pillar bronze posts that mark the Trustees Plaza. A twostory glass sculpture will be suspended in the Harned Center and visible from the Commons when the Harned Center opens this fall. We hope you’ll stop by and explore the new campus center next time you’re in the area!
Share your TCC Story! Break out the cake and light the candles – we’re celebrating our 50th birthday in 2015! More than 500,000 students have passed through TCC’s doors and gone on to accomplish great things since we opened in 1965. We’d love to hear from as many alumni as possible. You can upload stories, photos, and video at tcc50.org. You’ll also find a timeline with stories, history and images to explore. We’re kicking off a year of celebration this fall with the Harned Center Grand Opening Sept. 4. We’ll keep you posted on upcoming 50th events!
