TCC Student Receives Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Transfer Scholarship Simbarashe Change, one of Tacoma Community College’s stellar international students, was recently selected to receive a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Simbarashe is one of just 73 scholars nationwide to receive the award this year. The scholarship will pay up to $30,000 per year. It’s designed to cover the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she may receive. Simbarashe graduated from TCC in 2013. He served in student government while at the college and was Outstanding International Student of the Year in 2012. He hopes to transfer to Stanford University, University of Southern California or New York University to study economics. His long-term plan includes pursuing a master’s of business administration and a law degree so he can start his own securities firm, with the goal to help children in his native country of Zimbabwe. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is a generous scholarship for the nation’s top community college students to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities. The Foundation provides up to $30,000 per year, making it the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. Tacoma Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, or age in its programs and activities.

Transitioning Veterans to Civilian Life Did you know? The number of troops leaving the service at Joint Base LewisMcChord (JBLM) is projected to jump from 6,000 per year to 13,000 per year by 2014. Washington ranks among the top five most popular states for military personnel separating from the service. About 22,000 veterans, active-duty personnel, and their dependents are enrolled in Washington community and technical colleges.
Learn English – and bring the kids! Did you know that TCC offers classes in South Tacoma for parents who need ESL or GED classes – and that infants younger than 1 year old are allowed in class? The Madison Center for Family Literacy, a joint program run by Tacoma Public Schools and Tacoma Community College, offers education for parents and pre-school aged children. It’s located near the Tacoma Mall. This fall, a limited number of spots are available for parents just beginning to learn English (levels 1-3 CASAS). Funded by an Innovative Digital English Acceleration (I-DEA) grant from the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the class enables students to borrow a computer, connect to free internet access at home, and access new instructional technology. What’s YOUR goal?
TCC Students Complete More Certificates At TCC, we believe that preparing our students to compete starts with helping them complete a degree or certificate. Or both! That’s why many TCC career-training programs are structured like ladders, giving students the opportunity to earn certificates as they work toward degree completion. And that’s why Community College Week ranks TCC among the top 100 schools in the nation for certificate attainment by African Americans. Many students work while attending school. Why not get an entry-level job in your chosen field while earning the credential you need to advance in that field? Find out more at www.tacomacc.edu/careertraining.
