An Emerald Outlook

WHILE hiking along the famous Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, my local guide, Ollie, instructed me to time a Charlie Chaplin jump-for-joy alongside him. Thanks to a beautiful spring rain, we had barely encountered another soul during our five-mile trek, until we encountered three Ukrainians who captured the image. While the Cliffs of Moher — the “baby cliffs" and "the big boys” as Ollie coined them — will forever remain etched in my memory, so too, will this encounter with fellow travelers. Juxtaposition was tangible: As the sun attempted to peek through storm clouds, there was an acknowledgment of the Ukrainians’ painful few years, shown respectfully with a simple nod by Ollie, who added, “We’re happy you’re here.”

The Cliffs have witnessed both beauty and pain as visitors continually tread along its enticing coastline. Young, enthusiastic, and full of surprising local anecdotes, I’ll forever remember Ollie’s zest for life. Ultimately, this is why we travel — to foster real connection with those encountered along the way. My hope is that you find inspiration to continually travel and dance amidst life’s storms. Afterall, juxtaposition makes both all the more potent. Enjoy the issue!

HAPPY TRAVELS!

WHEN it comes to the perfect vacation destination, the Caribbean checks all boxes with its azure waters, powder-fine sand beaches, incredible restaurants, and rich local culture. With more than 700 islands, you could spend a lifetime exploring the region. We’ve narrowed down our top three island escapes for sun-soaked adventures both on land and at sea.

SANDALS HALCYON BEACH ST. LUCIA CASTRIES, ST. LUCIA

The all-new beachfront suites with butler service are the epitome of luxury. The resort also owns bragging rights of having the Caribbean’s longest pool. Ocean adventures are endless, from snorkeling and windsurfing to wake boarding and kayaking, while golf fans have their choice of two challenging courses.

ROOM KEY WOW FACTOR /

SANDALS DUNN’S RIVER OCHO RIOS, JAMAICA

Known For: Jamaica conjures images of reggae tunes, jerk chicken, rum drinks, and James Bond novels. The island’s gorgeous coastline is complemented by lush jungle interiors with dramatic waterfalls and lazy rivers.

It’s a brisk, 90-minute hike to the summit, but there are plenty of natural swimming pools for cooling off along the way. A Grand ESCAPE

Checking into the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa.

IF you’re a discerning nomad, get ready to be swathed in nextlevel service and luxury. When staying at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa, every whim or desire is carefully catered to. The property’s pinch-me locale along Seven Mile Beach hosts unrivaled enticements. Here’s a sneak peek.

If a master mixologist and a seasoned bibliophile were tasked with concepting a boldly unprecedented new business, they’d likely end up with something like Library by the Sea. This fully immersive cocktail experience encourages guests to read between the wines by offering narrative-driven specialty drinks paired with the characters, experiences, and plot twists of some of the world’s most celebrated pieces of literature. Shelves are adorned with vintage spirits displayed with notable first-edition novels, many signed by their famous authors — Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe, and Maya Angelou.

The drink menu falls somewhere between science lab and storytelling festival, with rotary evaporators, refrigerated centrifuges, and sous vides used to craft the perfect complement to supporting prose.

CELEBRATED SEA FOOD

With the influence of roughly 150 nationalities and well over half a million visitors each year — many hailing from the world’s top foodie destinations — it’s little wonder Grand Cayman is lauded by gourmands as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. With such a vibrant food scene, it can be difficult to standout. Kimpton Seafire manages to do just that. Seafire’s signature restaurant, Ave, marries Mediterranean and Caribbean flavors. Ave is a beachside breakfast bistro by day, upscale epicurean establishment by night. Meanwhile, the resort’s centerpiece restaurant, Avecita, is located inside Ave and offers Spanishstyle plates served family style. For the ultimate beachside vibe, Coccoloba pays homage to Mexican street food while proclaiming to serve the best piña colada on the island.

SEASIDE SERENITY

While it might be difficult to find anything calmer than the gemstone-colored waters that border Kimpton Seafire, The SPA at Seafire is a worthy competitor. Boasting 8,500 square feet, dozens of pampering treatments, and the island’s only Hammam, holistic wellness is a top priority. For those who need more convincing, consider the annual Seafire Wellness Festival. Held every summer, this weeklong event features seminars and classes led by world-renowned health, fitness, and wellness experts, along with farm-to-table culinary experiences and indulgent relaxation.

ARCTIC ACCESS

Venture to the end of the earth with Abercrombie & Kent.

WIDELY recognized as the pioneers of luxury adventure travel, Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) has earned a reputation for going to the ends of the earth for its guests. Though now, “the ends of the earth” is no longer just a figure of speech — it’s also an itinerary. In the summer of 2024, A&K will debut its first expedition to the North Pole, a journey across the Arctic aboard the amenity-rich icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot.

Limited to fewer than 200 passengers, this epic adventure to the northernmost point on the planet begins in Oslo before whisking intrepid travelers to Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard, in the sovereign Arctic Archipelago of Norway — a remote island chain where nearly two-thirds of the surface is covered by stunning glaciers. Passengers will board an exclusively chartered, sumptuous, and sustainable expedition vessel and set sail towards a vast expanse of virgin sea ice. While many tend to dismiss the Arctic as an isolated and icedover tundra where only the hardiest survive, A&K makes exploring the Northern frontier equal parts posh and progressive.

For starters, Le Commandant Charcot is the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration ship powered by liquified natural gas, and the onboard pool — the Blue Lagoon — is heated by the ship’s energy recuperation system. Passengers can absorb the immense landscape in complete comfort. Stunning suites — all with private balconies — offer panoramic views of calving glaciers, floating icebergs, majestic polar bears, and migrating humpbacks. Gourmet restaurants, daily wellness classes, a relaxing sauna, and a full-service spa only add to the private yacht-style ambiance.

Led by A&K's acclaimed Expedition Team, educational and social onboard activities include hands-on scientific research projects, stargazing sessions, polar survival workshops, and cooking demonstrations — enriching ways to pass the time as the ship’s Captain charts the clearest and safest path to the Geographic North Pole. Upon arriving at the northernmost point on the planet, the captain will position the ship at exactly 90 degrees, signifying you’ve reached the holy grail of polar exploration.

A champagne toast, Instagram-worthy photo session, and for the bravest of souls — the polar plunge — mark the occasion.

A Green HORIZON

Travel with a purpose via Star Clippers.

IN August of 2019, the Swedish eco-prophetess Greta Thunberg sailed from the UK to New York City for the United Nations Climate Action Summit. Her goal? To send a message about sustainable travel and avoid contributing to the greenhouse gasses emitted by airplanes and other modes of transportation. At the time, the act seemed like a noble but unrealistic travel option for the vast majority. But just a few short years later, sustainable vacations are no longer a “someday” goal — for the eco-minded, green travel is a requirement. And for those looking to minimize their carbon footprint, traveling with Star Clippers is smooth sailing.

POWERED BY WIND

Star Clippers’ fleet of ships operate on wind power for an estimated 80 percent of each trip. Captains aim to maximize the amount of time under wind power, charting courses where the wind is most predictable. This reduces the use of auxiliary engines, which also power the air-conditioning and provide electricity for day-to-day operations.

CLEANER FUEL

When fuel is used, Star Clippers opts for a cleaner, highquality, low-sulfur gas oil — an action that awarded the company an International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate. In fact, every ship in the Star Clippers fleet has been recognized with this certification.

KEEPING IT SMALL

Star Clippers' largest ship holds just 220 passengers. The modest size minimizes waste and water use.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

The company’s waste-management policy includes using only eco-friendly and biodegradable cleaning products as well as biodegradable straws, reusable melamine glasses and plates, and stainless-steel cutlery. Single-use plastics have been eliminated from each ship.

Transformative Travel

LIFE-CHANGING are words to describe travel at its best, and Luxury Gold is consistently delivering transformative exploration. The high-end company specializes in upscale, small-group journeys designed to elevate travel, with the goal of leaving guests changed for the better.

For starters, Luxury Gold provides a personal Travel Concierge who creates a bespoke itinerary based on each guest’s unique preferences. It’s like traveling with a friend who is fluent in the local language, knows the culture and history, and has a robust network of local contacts at the ready. And, because Luxury Gold limits group sizes — usually an average of 20 people per trip — guests enjoy exclusive experiences.

For example, globetrotting gourmands seeking to satisfy their epicuriosity will enjoy life-changing culinary tours, classes, and restaurants. Snag a coveted reservation at one of the world’s best restaurants — where plaques humbly showcase Michelin stars, AAA Diamond designations, and Zagat ratings as you’re served a meal you’ll be talking about for years. Or go all-in during a hands-on cooking class with local chefs willing to share family recipes and techniques handed down for generations (and don’t be surprised if the chef’s Italian grandmother ambles into the kitchen to oversee the pasta rolling!).

Curated by Luxury Gold’s founder, the late Stanley Tollman, the Founder’s Collection taps into his extensive network of contacts and friends to connect travelers with local legends.

And if rail travel tops your travel desires, Luxury Gold's Golden Journey extensions offers the world's leading rail experiences in Europe, South Africa, and North America. No matter which mode of transport you choose, Luxury Gold ensures every guest checks out of ordinary and into extraordinary.

DISCOVER the Danube

Explore Europe aboard AmaMagna with AmaWaterways.

AMAWATERWAYS is regarded as the leader in European river tours. Afterall, one of the company’s cofounders, Rudi Schreiner, grew up next to the Danube River in Vienna and is credited with developing the concept. The river cruising idea came to him when the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal opened in 1992, and not too long after that, he and his fellow cofounders launched AmaWaterways.

But the company is known for more than simply sailing the world’s most iconic rivers. It’s also recognized for offering exclusive experiences to passengers — like Oktoberfest celebrations at a designated spot in Vilshofen, Germany, and private wine tasting tours at Austria’s Greinburg Castle. On every AmaWaterways ship, passengers enjoy decadent dining, spacious accommodations and incredible innovation. And nowhere is this more evident than on the award-winning AmaMagna.

The apricot brandy and chocolate tasting in Dürnstein seem unbeatable, that is until your exclusive invite to a wine tasting in Spitz arrives. A walking tour in Bratislava leaves no doubt the city has earned its nickname as the “Coronation City of Kings.” Vienna’s treasure trove of Baroque splendors, including its grand Schönbrunn Palace, gives you a glimpse into bygone grandeur. While your ship is docked in Krems, the gateway to the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley, stroll the cobblestone streets to the Baroque Stiftskirche, the famed church tower in the enchanting Baroque village of Dürnstein.

GEMS OF SOUTHEAST EUROPE

History comes alive on this cruise across Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Sailing along the lower Danube offers opportunities to enjoy Celtic fortifications, medieval towns, grand cities, magical pastoral landscapes, and the Danube’s famed Iron Gates. Pedal through Belgrade’s sprawling Kalemegdan Park, sip a glass of wine at a centuries-old vineyard, and learn the secrets of the perfect pastry from a local Bulgarian pastry chef. In Serbia, order a Šlivovitz, which was added in 2022 to UNESCO’s list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage.” The itinerary is extra festive over the holiday season, when Orthodox traditions, Winterfest in Novi Sad, and several location-specific Christmas markets can be visited.

MAJESTIC CAPITALS OF THE DANUBE

Delight in the Old-World grandeur of Europe’s most spectacular capital cities — Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria. This journey follows the paths of kings and queens, including Habsburg royalty. Hike to hilltop castles such as Bratislava’s gleaming fortress and pedal your way to Klosterneuburg Abbey, where you can taste a bite of sachertorte — the cake that started a national holiday in Austria. In Vienna, aka the “City of Waltzes,” visit famous regal splendors, including the majestic Opera House and the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs. A stop at the historic city center, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, or a visit to a traditional Viennese café for a hot Viennese coffee should be added to any itinerary.

Antarctica’s Allure

Explore the White Continent with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic.

FOR a lot of well-traveled explorers, the idea of visiting Antarctica seems almost as extreme as the continent itself. But, with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, Antarctica is hardly unattainable. As the pioneering global leader in journeys of deep discovery, Lindblad Expeditions was founded in 1979 and has been traveling to Antarctica ever since. As National Geographic Expedition partners, they offer three polar-class vessels traveling to the White Continent, expertly navigating its rugged, raw, and remote landscape. All journeys are purpose-built for polar exploration — a welcomed distinction when crossing the infamous Drake Passage.

National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Endurance, and National Geographic Resolution all employ an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to interact with the captain and crew. All offer five-star dining, spacious cabins, and comfortable common areas for gathering.

Even better, the National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution feature a top-tier ice class rating of PC5 and are outfitted with glass igloos for an unforgettable onboard glamping experience.

And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Guests will also enjoy interacting with and learning from onboard naturalists, scientists, undersea specialists, and National Geographic Photography Experts on every voyage. And, thanks to a new partnership with OM System, complimentary access to high-quality camera gear and photography equipment is also available. When not capturing the perfect shot, passengers can choose from a variety of daily activities, including kayaking, Zodiac cruises, and in early November, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. On the ship, guests have access to state-of-the-art expedition tools like an underwater remotely operated vehicle, hydrophone, splash-cam, video microscopes, and more, which can be used to better understand and study Antarctica’s wildlife.

Those who yearn to become members of travel’s most coveted and exclusive society — The Seven Continents Club — can do so knowing their expedition is helping protect Antarctica’s marine life and critical habitat. Passengers aboard the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet contribute to the LEX-NG Fund, which supports conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology. Currently, the LEX-NG Fund underwrites research in remote locations around the Antarctic Peninsula, which gathers data on whale species to provide a snapshot of current whale health, the surrounding ecosystem, and detect changes over time.

30 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES CRUISE GPS WOW FACTOR / Soaking

sun at The Haven's sundeck and infinity pool on Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Viva! HELLO,

Norwegian Cruise Line debuts its latest vessel.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE is often lauded for its upbeat, laid-back ambiance and inventive “freestyle cruising” reputation. A lack of strict onboard itineraries, designated times to dine, or formal dress codes have made NCL a favorite among “go with the flow” travelers. In the last few years, the company has also made waves for its new Prima Class of ships — an upscale fleet of vessels that boast “how is this possible?” amenities, itineraries, and luxuries (think go kart tracks, free falls, stunning ports, mesmerizing entertainment, and private butler service).

NCL’s second ship in the distinguished Prima Class — Norwegian Viva — was recently scheduled for its maiden voyage, followed by a host of late summer itineraries through the Mediterranean region, and later a fall and winter season of island hopping throughout the Caribbean.

While Norwegian Viva is bow to stern impressive — the ship offers over 43,000 square feet of outdoor space, an infinity beach and pool, a glass encased “Oceanwalk” walkway, a choice selection of sumptuous staterooms, indulgent spa, a tidal wave waterslide, and a free-fall dry slide called The Drop that spans the height of 10 decks — the real eye popper is the Viva Speedway, a 1,400-foot racetrack that caters to those with a need for speed.

A HAVEN AT SEA

Of course, the surefire way to know your ship has come in is if it offers The Haven, and sure enough, this exclusive enclave of suites, amenities, venues, and services is available on Norwegian Viva.

Similar to a country club or skybox seating, The Haven is perched atop select NCL ships. Guests with Haven privileges still enjoy access to everything onboard — but when they retire for the evening, they do so in the ship’s most luxurious and well-appointed accommodations. Perks include a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, private sundeck, expedited embarkation and disembarkation processing, and priority seating for entertainment — which quickly makes the leap from nice to necessity given Beetlejuice The Musical is the headline production onboard.

MUST-SEA ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS

NCL enjoys a proven history of delivering envelope-pushing entertainment at sea, and its theatrical productions are no exception. Norwegian Viva is set to one-up an already impressive list of feats when the curtain rises on the Tony Award-nominated musical “Beetlejuice.”

The Tim Burton classic has been adapted for a performance at sea. Patrons can expect immersive special effects, elaborate lighting and sound, and heightened paranormal antics, thanks to the lavish three-story Viva Theatre and Club, a Vegas-style venue complete with a multi-story video wall, jaw-dropping chandelier, and VIP lounge seating. This summer marks the first time the pop culture classic will be performed on a cruise ship, and guests can expect to see a few of the show’s Broadway stars to take the Viva stage.

While the musical promises to be memorably spectacula r, it’s hardly the only entertainment onboard. Norwegian Viva also promises improv comedy, live concerts featuring rock-androll tribute bands, casinos, parties, and the Galaxy Pavilion, an immersive reality experience that allows passengers to explore the first flying theater simulator at sea.

AT SEA FOOD AND DRINK

As the second of six vessels in NCL’s highly anticipated Prima Class, Norwegian Viva will offer a plethora of dining and beverage venues — all of which boast world-class cuisine and cocktails. At the Indulge Food Hall, passengers can sample foods from 11 different eateries, or peruse the elevated menus at Hudson’s, an upscale restaurant offering 270-degree ocean views. Afterwards, raise a glass to an industry-exclusive sustainable cocktail at the Metropolitan Bar.

MEET

the Winemakers

Savor Salvatore Ferragamo Vino*

Raise a glass (or two) in celebration of Norwegian’s Meet the Winemaker Cruise Series, now in its seventh year. Pair exceptional vintages with gourmet food and international locales. Highlights include an evening with Salvatore Ferragamo.

Since 1993, Salvatore Ferragamo, alongside his father Ferruccio, have conserved the Il Borro estate and transformed the property into a fivestar Relais et Châteaux Hotel in a 1000-year-old medieval village. Of top note, the family has converted all agricultural farming practice to organic farming, resulting in world-class wines with a unique concept of terroir.

JOURNEY TO Jordan

Traverse an enchanting land defined by local culture.

VENTURE to this intriguing country and expect to be met with welcoming hospitality, endless adventure, exquisite cuisine, wineries and breweries, ancient architecture, holy sites, plus the delights of the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. Filled with wow factor that goes far beyond the carved city of Petra, here are a few reasons why Jordan deserves top billing for any traveler.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY GO NOW /

BEDOUIN BANTER

The Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan's largest nature reserve, covering roughly 125 square miles of picturesque mountains and the wadis that snake along them throughout the Great Rift Valley. Straddling the intersection of three distinct climate zones, this desert oasis supports more than 600 varieties of plants, more than 180 species of birds, and 45 species of mammals. It's also home to nomadic Bedouin shepherds known for their hospitality and traditional meals. Visitors can expect to be welcomed into a tent for tea, coffee, and delightful conversation.

STAY AFLOAT IN THE DEAD SEA

As one of the only bodies of water in the world where floating is effortless, the Dead Sea is also famous for being the lowest point on Earth — roughly 1,390 feet below sea level. It was also the world’s first natural spa — ancient civilizations found soaking in the mineral rich waters to be a healing experience. The Dead Sea still exudes a therapeutic ambiance today.

RED SEA SNORKELING

If you prefer a little more action in the water, snorkeling or scuba diving in the Red Sea is hard to beat. The plethora of marine life — more than 1,200 species of fish and vibrant coral reefs dating back about 7,000 years — are just two reasons the Red Sea is a celebrated destination.

One of the seven underwater wonders of the world, the Red Sea also boasts great historical significance as a hub for cultural exchange and civilization, which is still evident today.

AS-SALT WALKING TOUR

The country’s newest UNESCO Heritage Site, the lively hillside city of As-Salt is a delightful junction of modern and ancient traditions. A few walking trails zigzag across the city, allowing visitors opportunity to join locals in a game of mangaleh , explore the area’s rich culture, or pop into Beit Aziz for a traditional dish such as sajiyeh , mansaf , fatteh , or a famous Salti dessert — knafeh and hitaliyyeh are both tasty options.

DO GOOD AT THE IRAQ AL-AMIR WOMEN’S COOPERATIVE

Socially minded travelers can stop by the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative, an organization dedicated to helping women become financially independent. Guests will learn the basics of papermaking using natural, local materials or they can take a cooking class and make an Arabic dish.

THE PONANT EXPERIENCE

Here are some highlights from Ponant’s 14 inspiring and introspective journeys to choose from.

The ancient village of Kake is home to one of the largest totem poles in the world, carved by indigenous Tlingit people. Connecting with a native of Elfin Cove reveals the way of life in the quaint fisherman settlement. While cruising near the west coast of British Columbia, experience a traditional cultural dance performed by the Kwakwaka’wakw people — the original inhabitants of the Northern Vancouver Island area.

Because Ponant specializes in small-ship cruises, passengers can enjoy access to the small island and inlets of Sitka Sound, where it’s common to observe Alaska’s charming and extraordinary wildlife, including sea otters, humpback whales, sea lions, orcas, black bears, and bald eagles. The majestic grizzly bear — an iconic symbol of untamed wilderness — can easily be spotted pacing the sea cliffs, steep fjords, and rock walls jutting 3,000 feet straight out of the ocean in Misty Fjords National Monument. Blue glacial lakes, dizzying waterfalls, and snowcapped peaks surround you during a hike through the Tongass National Forest.

Another small-ship advantage is the ability to journey through the narrow Endicott Arm Fjord, which ends with a front-row view of the towering Dawes Glacier. More than 600 feet tall and a half-mile wide, this active icecap is known for spectacular calving displays.

Exploring the far reaches of the globe and destinations untamed — the places less traveled — is both bold and rewarding. So, it’s little wonder why Silversea offers expedition voyages to some of the world’s least traveled destinations.

ARCTIC

There’s no need to check your phone here as cell service doesn’t exist. There aren’t any paved roads either, which is understandable given there are no cars. And the only skyscrapers you’ll see are enormous icebergs — many jutting hundreds of feet into the air from the sea. In Greenland, you’ll also find the largest fjord system in the world, an important part of the Inuit culture. As many as 16 species of whale can be found in the Greenlandic waters, many of which are quite curious of passengers on a Zodiac cruise and even those paddling a kayak. Spot polar bears while circumnavigating Svalbard or while crossing Canada’s Northwest Passage. Seeing the king of the Arctic in its natural environment is sure to put a lump in your throat.

Sailing to both poles, Silver Endeavour is the newest ship in the Silversea fleet. With a PC6 ice-class rating (one of the highest in the industry), and state-ofthe-art equipment and exploration technology, Silver Endeavour pushes the boundaries of discovery with more departures and longer seasons in some of the most remote destinations on Earth. She’s also widely considered the most luxurious expedition ship at sea, meaning just because the Arctic is unspoiled doesn’t mean you’ll be.

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

Almost two centuries have passed since the British naturalist Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands and observed wildlife behaviors that informed his theory of evolution — a notion that changed both modern science and humanity. Today, nearly 200 years later, visitors can still witness real-time evolution as volcanoes continue to erupt and lava flows form new islands within this UNESCO World Heritage archipelago.

Those volcanoes are largely responsible for the uniqueness of the Galápagos, creating rock formations that provide shelter to more than 9,000 animals and plant life, including the area’s unofficial mascot — the blue-footed booby. This endearing bird is one of the dozens of charismatic and indigenous animals passengers will delight in seeing during various cruises offered aboard Silversea’s first destination-specific ship — Silver Origin .

Silver Origin offers every luxury imaginable, including 50 all-suite accommodations, private balconies, personalized butler service, indulgent interiors, premium bed linens, and large floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the ship that usher in sweeping views of nature’s majesty. But the real jewel is an observation deck and stargazing platform that provide an elevated option for simultaneous views of the Southern Cross and North Star in the night sky.

Circumnavigating the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Jaipur and Agra — this near two-week itinerary includes a stop at Mother Teresa’s tomb, the Rajbari Temples, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, and of course, the world’s grandest tribute to love, the Taj Mahal, which passengers can behold at both sunrise and sunset. This architectural marvel is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Other wonders of romance include a massive red sandstone marble tomb in Delhi and the Pink City of Jaipur, with its ornate royal palace that was painted in a dusty pink to welcome members of the British Royal Family. Guests will stay at three magnificent Oberoi properties: The Oberoi New Delhi, The Oberoi Amarvilas, and The Oberoi Rajvilas.

Spend a day in Kalna. Once an important trade port on the river, today this city is best known for the magnificent Hindu temples built by the maharajas of Bardhaman.

Inhale the fragrant air in Kolkata’s famous Flower Market, and visit the Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site devoted to astronomy. Here, local astronomers study the heavens and measure celestial phenomena to help determine which days are promising for a wedding.

The journey begins aboard the Ganges Voyager II , an all-suite vessel with spacious staterooms that offer a cozy sitting area and a French balcony with floor-to-ceiling glass doors. take me to Tahiti

Treasure every moment in The Islands of Tahiti.

IF you thought The Islands of Tahiti were overwater bungalows, romance, and turquoise waters, you’re not alone. Those staples are indeed what have made the island nation famous, and none of them are in short supply. But this South Pacific paradise offers much more than the iconic emblems so often depicted on glossy postcards — from horseback rides on the beach to ATV tours through the jungle.

In all, there are nearly 120 islands and atolls sprinkled over five distinct archipelagos — each radiating a distinct personality. But they all have one thing in common: they inspire travelers to treasure every moment.

SOCIETY ISLANDS

Arguably the most famous and most visited island chain in the region, in large part because it includes Bora Bora and the capital island of Tahiti, the Society Islands are adorned with translucent water, colorful coral reefs, spellbinding luxury, and of course — the celebrated overwater bungalows. But they offer far more than sun-filled days spent in a hammock, including some of the most scenic and (literally) breathtaking hiking outside of the Rocky Mountains. Imposing peaks, verdant valleys, ancient landmarks, and gushing waterfalls await.

TUAMOTU ISLANDS

Idyllically dotting the Pacific Ocean, the Tuamotu Islands boast pink-sand beaches, legendary pearl farms, and top SCUBA diving. While you’ll find internationally known resorts on some of the larger islands, smaller enclaves offer a more intimate experience. Accommodations often include dining with locals, personalized guides, and the discovery of hidden gems.

GAMBIER ISLANDS

The Gambier Islands are the most secluded of The Islands of Tahiti — which also makes them the most seductive. Find rich island history — archeological relics like a triumphal arch, watchtowers, and the oldest monument in The Islands of Tahiti — Cathedral Saint Michel — can all be found here. Plus, the island’s inhabitants are known for their hospitality and warmth.

MARQUESAS ISLANDS

Filled with rich culture, history, and endless adventures, the Marquesas Islands also claim one of the tallest waterfalls in The Islands of Tahiti. Dramatic cliffs jut from an equally impressive coastline of black-sand beaches and stunning bays. Wild horses, boars, and goats roam the islands, while the biodiversity underwater is also alluring. Divers and snorkelers can expect to see manta rays, eagle rays, sharks, jackfish, tuna, swordfish, and even dolphins. Adventurists can explore via foot, horseback, or an off-road tour.

AUSTRAL ISLANDS

The cliffs and caves of the Austral Islands serve as the perfect vantage point for watching migrating humpbacks frolic in the waters just offshore. Between August and October, whales mate and give birth in the area — a magical experience for any nature lover to witness. The Austral Islands are also home to pastoral farmland and colorful, picturesque villages where locals sell their artwork alongside handwoven baskets and hats.

MIDDLE EASTERN MAGIC

Discover new frontiers with Windstar Cruises.

SINCE the beginning of time, voyagers have navigated by the wind and stars. For those traveling with Windstar Cruises, this still rings true — a sense of wanderlust is the only compass needed. The luxury small ship cruise line now has an all-suite yacht in the Middle East that serves only 312 guests. Choose from more than a dozen itineraries across the Middle East — including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and other stops along the Red Sea and Persian Gulf — as it’s time to let your inner explorer chart its own course.

DESERT DUNES

Join a trained driver for an Arabian Desert dune exploration session in a specially equipped 4x4. Maneuver over rugged terrain and scenic sand dunes. Drifting down the dunes on a board is another option and sandboarding is a top thrill for many desert enthusiasts. And for an authentic experience, there’s no better way to scan the expansive horizon than from atop a camel — just as nomadic Bedouins observed the same landscape centuries ago.

BEDOUIN BANTER

Often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Middle East,” Jordan’s Wadi Rum is one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. Celebrated for its narrow gorges, towering cliffs, and expansive caverns, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to nomadic Bedouin shepherds, known for their hospitality as much as their traditional meals.

RED SEA SNORKELING

When it comes to diving and snorkeling, the Red Sea tops nearly every “world’s best spot” list. The plethora of marine life — more than 1,200 species of fish, 44 species of shark, and vibrant coral reefs dating back 7,000 years — are the reason enough the Red Sea is a celebrated destination.

This extreme biodiversity is recognized and monitored by the Egyptian government and a section of the sea is considered one of the seven underwater wonders of the world.

WILDLIFE ISLAND

THE LAST CONTINENT

Ethereal exploration via Viking ®

FOR decades, the name Viking has been synonymous with river voyages. But in recent years, the company has made new waves with its expansion into ocean voyages and expedition sailing. After all, when it comes to an ocean expedition, it’s hard to top the bottom of the world.

ANTARCTIC EXPLORER

Often referred to as “The Last Continent,” Antarctica’s moniker is a literal translation for many intrepid travelers — it’s usually the last continent they need to visit to become members of travel’s most coveted and exclusive society — The Seven Continents Club. And with two purpose-built expedition ships, both well appointed with amenities and a Polar Class 6 rating, Viking makes exploring the world’s most remote destination both possible and elegant.

The company’s Antarctic Explorer journey sails through the Antarctic peninsula, where snow-covered landscapes, astonishing icebergs, and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing await. Here, itineraries are shaped by calving glaciers and migrating humpbacks. Time ashore is dependent on the current mood of a herd of elephant seals. Passengers can participate in activities like polar kayaking, so long as the leopard seal patrolling the icy waters agrees. Antarctica offers near constant reminders that nature is both raw and ethereal. It’s also likely you’ll find yourself confirming what you’re seeing and experiencing isn’t manufactured, supplemented, or enhanced. It is simply nature in its purest and most untouched form. Curious seals, playful penguins, and several species of birds found nowhere else in the world all converge to delight and entertain. It’s easy to understand why Ernest Shackleton was so captivated by the last continent.

VIKING VESSELS

Today’s travelers can explore Antarctica without sacrificing the comforts and convenience of the modern world. Both of Viking’s polar ships – Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis — boast spacious staterooms, ranging from 215 to over 1,200 square feet of living space.

Passengers will never miss a moment of the at-sea action, thanks to all ocean-view accommodations and private balconies featuring floor-to-ceiling, distortion-free glass. Luxury linens, expansive bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, daily housekeeping, a personal drying closet, and 24-hour room service round out the in-room amenities.

On board, guests can interact with working researchers and scientists and even have the option to participate in current projects. Heated couches and lava rock firepits adorn the outdoor lounge spaces, allowing passengers to admire the dramatic scenery in cozy relaxation. Bars, restaurants, a library, and three different pools, each with its own temperature setting, also offer panoramic views of the pristine wilderness.

ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES 59
Opposite: Hawa Mahal, Palace of the Winds, in Jaipur. Above: A traditional Rajasthani dancer performs in the desert.

When we think of India, we think of the Taj Mahal and the emblematic cities of Rajasthan. This is the India of novels, films, and legends; the country of Mughal emperors and vibrant colors; the land of festivals, majestic forts and palaces; the India travelers dream about. Northern India is also a great introduction for this vast and complex subcontinent. Here is a sketch, to help you plan your journey.

First stop: Delhi, main gateway to northern India and the country’s capital. Delhi is two cities in one: Old Delhi, the original settlement and seat of empires and kingdoms; and New Delhi, the planned city built from 1912 to 1931 by the British during the colonial period. Delhi is best-known for an abundance of impressive sites, like the Tomb of Humayun (second Mughal emperor), built in the 16th century and forerunner to the Taj Mahal. Delhi’s most famous monument is the Red Fort, former home of the Peacock Throne and Koh-I-Noor diamond. This massive sandstone complex contains palaces, terraces, gardens, a mosque, and reception halls. Another Mughal-era landmark is Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque), a focal point of the city’s Muslim community. Compared to the narrow streets and crowded pathways of the old city, New Delhi feels like a world apart. Broad tree-lined boulevards and stately government buildings were conceived by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Don’t miss the regal Janpath avenue, the imposing India Gate, and elegant Secretariat buildings. For a pleasant break, stroll through the Lodhi Gardens, dating back over 500 years, with immense trees and domed mausoleums. Before you leave Delhi, make time for shopping. Visit Chandni Chowk, the lively bazaar selling silver, used books, gems, street food, and handicrafts; and Janpath Market for clothing and souvenirs. A more relaxed shopping experience awaits you at Connaught Place and its upscale shops, popular with local residents.

AGRA & THE TAJ MAHAL

A four-hour drive south of Delhi is Agra, the former capital of the Mughal empire and a treasure house of spectacular architecture. The highlight here is The Taj Mahal, built in the 17th century by emperor Shah Jahan for his favorite wife. This masterpiece of world architecture is a symbol of India. No matter how many photos you may have seen of the Taj Mahal, the real thing will take your breath away. The site’s perfect symmetry, harmonious blend of light and shadow, and serene setting on the banks of the Yamuna River come together to create an unforgettable experience. For a full appreciation of the Taj Mahal, visit at sunrise, when the white stone changes from grey to white; return at mid-day to admire the artistry of the inlaid marble and precious stones; and right before dusk, cross the river to admire the Taj Mahal with the light of the setting sun. Nearby is Agra’s Fort, surrounded by its moat and enormous walls. Wander through the fort complex’s largest residence, Jahangir Mahal, the beautiful Pearl Mosque, and then climb the upper terraces for indelible Taj Mahal views. Other must-see sites in the area are the intimate, jewel-box mausoleum of Itimad ud Daulah (also known as “Baby Taj”), and the abandoned and haunting walled city of Fatehpur Sikri, a short drive away.

JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN

Jaipur, India’s Pink City, is the gateway to the fabled deserts of Rajasthan. The city was built in 1728 by Maharajah Jai Singh II and designed with an urban grid. Jaipur is justly famous for its vibrant bazaars, royal palaces, mighty forts, old havelis, and local crafts. To get your bearings, climb atop an elephant and ride to the massive Amber Fort, with its colorful pavilions, palaces, and great views of Jaipur. Visit the City Palace, home of the region’s royal family and a fascinating window into the lives of Maharajas. Nearby is Jantar Mantar, the Royal observatory, a unique achievement dating back to 1716. A beloved spot in the city center is Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a façade with 953 niches, where secluded women of the palace watched the outside world. While in Jaipur, experience the bazaars, including Johari for jewelry, Bapu for Jaipuri items, and Chandpole for handicrafts within the walled city. In a class by itself is The Gem Palace, unsurpassed merchants of exquisite jewelry for royals and celebrities since 1852.

RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK & UDAIPUR

A visit to India is not complete without spotting the elusive Bengal tigers, an endangered species and one of the most magnificent creatures in all of nature. Bengal tigers are one of the biggest wild cats, each with a unique stripe pattern. One of the best places to spot the tigers, as well as some of India’s unique wildlife, is Ranthambore National Park, just 80 miles from Jaipur. The National Park, once the hunting grounds of Maharajas, is also home to leopards, bears, deer, and 300-plus species of birds.

After experiencing the crowds and dust of Rajasthan, Udaipur feels like a balm for the senses. This magical city of lakes, surrounded by the Aravalli Range, is the ideal locale to end your travels in northern India. Udaipur is also home to the Rajput royal family of Mewar, one of the oldest dynasties in the world. The city is well known for narrow streets, lakeside bathing ghats, slower pace, and Hindu shrines — particularly Jagdish Temple, a local landmark. Udaipur is perhaps Rajasthan’s most romantic city, with photo ops galore, particularly of Lake Pichola and its two natural islands at sunset. The largest of the two, Jag Mandir, was built in the 16th century as a summer pleasure palace by the Maharajas. The smaller, Lake Palace, is now a TAJ luxury hotel. To understand Udaipur, visit the City Palace, a labyrinth of richly decorated courtyards with frescoes and dazzling inlaid mirror work. Before returning home, wander through bazaars selling Rajasthani handicrafts. On your last afternoon, watch a mesmerizing sunset from your cruise on Lake Pichola — your journey’s end.

Ireland offers ethereal landscapes and endless local personalities along the Wild Atlantic Way.

68 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES

EMBRACED

by a hazy mist of light rain, I trek along Ireland’s famous Cliffs of Moher with Ollie, one of Brendan Vacations' local expert guides and an Ennis local. After just 45 minutes into our five-mile coastal hike, we’ve discussed the intricacies of the area: the history of Doolin’s traditional Irish music and the famous Gus O’Connor’s Pub; how local farmers rallied to protect this famous stretch of coastline; plus, tiny Inis Mor on the Aran Islands, which looks like an alligator when viewed via plane. As we veer toward a steep stretch of the hike that tumbles precariously toward the sea and tempts seasoned surfers, our conversation lands upon the cycle of life. The Cliffs have long been a site of birth and death, where chaos is both quelled and entertained as the Atlantic’s ebb and flow mirrors human triumph and tragedy. For young Ollie, this cherished UNESCO Heritage Site is not just a must-see. It’s indicative of what I’ll further discover while exploring the Emerald Isle with Brendan Vacations: resiliency anchors Ireland’s playful personality.

The Best of the Burren MAKE TRAVEL MATTER

My main entice to explore southwestern Ireland with Brendan Vacations is not just for a private, personalized experience, but also for its MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences program. As part of Brendan Vacations and The Travel Corporation’s non-profit The Treadright Foundation, MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences focus on benefiting planet, people, and wildlife. As such, my private introduction to the Burren Farm Experience focuses on all three. A fifth-generation operation by husbandand-wife team Cathal and Bronagh O’Rourke and located in the heart of the Burren in County Clare, the working farm embraces a growing sustainable movement in southwestern Ireland. Gracing 500 acres, the land feels like a step back in time, framing the Burren’s landscape of bedrock — a stark yet beautiful UNESCO Heritage Site of glacial-era limestone sprinkled with cliffs and caves, fossils, rock formations, and archaeological gems. As we bump along the farm in a rustic jeep, the O’Rourkes relay their mission: to preserve the rich heritage of the land. Guests here can forest bathe in ancient woodlands, savor picnics of 28day aged organic beef accompanied by local market produce and famous Irish cheese, and learn about Ireland’s fairy trees and mystical folklore while walking their ethereal grounds. Yet similar to my experience with Ollie, what makes this day most memorable is the human connection: The O’Rourke's Irish pride is undeniable, and I’ll forever remember their dedication to preserving nature and a family legacy.

Next up, a private tour of the Burren Smokehouse with Swedish owner Birgitta Hedin-Curtin. Located in Lisdoonvarna along Ireland’s famed Wild Atlantic Way — a 2,500 km coastal driving route navigating nine counties and three provinces — the smokehouse is world-renowned for smoked Irish organic salmon (recently awarded what’s considered the Oscars of the food industry). A non-discreet entrance leads to an impressive visitor’s center, where guests can sample Clare Islands fish while learning about how the salmon is salted and smoked. After an interactive showcase explaining the company history, Birgitta takes me to the smokehouse, detailing the source of each ingredient. Afterward, I meet her husband and local raconteur Peter Curtin, owner and brew master of the famous Roadside Tavern. Over samples of his impressive beers, our conversation covers everything from the Irish War of Independence to hops and Limerick musician Mick Hanley.

My evening is capped with a decadent wine-paired dinner at Gregans Castle Hotel. A charming 18th-century manor house and gourmet retreat in Ballyvaughan tucked among lush gardens, the property has enticed the likes of artists Seamus Heaney, Sean Scully, and J.R.R. ASHFORD CASTLE & A Taste of Galway

While Dublin may be Ireland’s most famous east coast city, any exploration of the western coast must include a stop in Galway. A small university city, its vibrant streets are a fascinating intersection of art, architecture, history, and cuisine. I spend a half day with Regina, a Galway local and private expert guide with Galway Food Tours. We uncover hidden sights, sounds, and architectural elements. Yet our main mission is savoring the flavors of leading local entrepreneurs during a tasty whirlwind of cuisine and spirits. The walking tour celebrates artisan producers, cheese makers, creative beer projects, exceptional chocolatiers, traditional family run businesses, and ambitious entrepreneurs showcasing exceptional Irish cuisine.

Just a two-hour drive from Galway with my private driver, Andy, who shares my love of ‘80s road trip music (note: Brendan Vacations is known for its chauffeured experiences, which equals no lines, no buses, and plenty of unforgettable local intel with a dedicated driver for your entire visit), whisks me through the grand entrance to Ashford Castle. My trip culminates with a three-night stay here, a property I’ve been yearning to experience since I was a child combing through my grandmother’s travel diaries. My long weekend includes a visit to Ireland’s School of Falconry, where I take a hawk walk with Pippin; a property run with Irish Wolfhounds; a bike ride to the charming village of Cong (stop for lunch at Pat Cohan’s pub and back drop to the famous Quiet Man film); a boat tour along Lough Corrib, plus a decadent spa treatment at Ireland’s most lauded spa. The castle oozes history, of course. Peruse the library, spend time in the billiards room and feel like royalty, or simply savor an Irish whiskey at one of the castle’s opulent bars. And in true Irish fashion, my takeaway after sampling a recommended whiskey at the Drawing Room, is many laughs with a Chris O’Dowd doppelganger. “You come for the landscapes, but remember our stories,” the bartender winks.

FLAVORS OF THE WEST

Experience these storied streets one bite at a time during a food tour in Galway .

LITTLE LANE COFFEE SHOP. Operated by a husband-and-wife team, the main focus is specialty, sustainable, and traceable coffee roasted just outside of Galway City in Oughterard.

TRUFFLE CHOCOLATE SHOP. Also run a by-husband-and wife team, try decadent truffles or the raspberry croissant filled. The Burren truffle is infused with wild honey from the Burren with floral and citrus notes. All truffles are named after mountains and patisserie is crafted from Irish butter.

ÉAN. Helmed by Chef Enda McEvoy, this restaurant holds an Irish “bib gourmand.” Opt for the seasonally inspired chef specialty, such as heirloom tomatoes, radish, leek, and local mussels.

WA SUSHI. A vendor of the weekly farmers market, sample the tasty turnip sushi and smoked mackerel sushi.

MCCAMBRIDGES. One of the oldest shops in the city, taste a selection of Irish spirits, cheese, and charcuterie.

KINGS HEAD. An historic pub, the building dates back over 800 years. Try the pan-fried hake with baby potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and The Blood Red Ale, a house brew.

GALWAY CITY DISTILLERY. As the first Distillery in Galway City Centre, the main focus is a “taste of the West in a glass.” It forages all botanics locally to create signature tinctures and cocktails. An on-site pot still also produces in-house gin. Try the signature gin and tonic, personalized with a hand-crafted bitters.

From road tripping along the famed Alaskan Highway to viewing polar bears in the Arctic, Canada offers an experience to fulfill your wildest dreams.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN

EXPERIENCE

Travel should make you feel alive. The most life-changing trips allow you to step outside of your comfort zone, connect with the natural world, and find yourself again. You don’t need to go far to find awe-inspiring wilderness and epic adventures. Canada, the second-largest nation on the planet, offers diverse landscapes of epic proportions and endless possibilities to satisfy all thrill levels.

ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE YUKON

Get off-the-beaten-path in the Yukon. Canada’s remote northwest territory will spark your imagination and stir your soul with its wild beauty. A road trip is the ultimate way to take in this region’s dazzling diversity, from historic sites to wildlife preserves. Snap a photo of the log skyscraper in Whitehorse, the Yukon’s quirky capital, before hitting the road to visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. You’ll want your camera ready to frame photos of woodland caribou, wood bison, muskox, and moose. It’s a two-hour drive along the historic Alaska Highway to Haines Junction, a town of just 800 people, fewer than the number of grizzly bears in Kluane National Park. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, take an air tour over the park so you can ogle the world’s largest non-polar icefields and get a bird’s eye view of Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan, which tops out at 19,545 feet.

80 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES
From top: Kayaking through Canada’s natural forest; brilliant lakes are found along the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction. Opposite, from top: A bear sighting in the Yukon; a Yukon dog-sled tour.

If fresh air and wide-open space are what you crave, you’ll get a big dose of them driving from the Chilkat River Valley to the windswept Chilkat Pass. Roll your windows down to admire the otherworldly landscapes as you skirt the boundaries of the largest contiguous area of protected wilderness on earth. The shores of shimmering Kluane Lake are the ideal stop to stretch your legs with a short hike.

Back on the Alaska Highway you’ll drive to Tok, the dog mushing capital of Alaska. Visit with some of the rambunctious sled dogs before continuing to Dawson City by way of the Top of the World Highway. This stretch of your trip takes in stunning backcountry and gold mining areas. Stop at the summit, which peaks at 4,515-feet, to savor the views.

A ferry ride across the Yukon River delivers you to Dawson City, a trapped-in-time outpost full of relics from its Klondike Gold Rush days like the Grand Palace Theater and Gertie’s Casino. History buffs should stop by to see the SS Keno , the last steamer to run the Yukon River from Whitehorse while literary fans won’t want to miss the Jack London Interpretive Center, which houses the poet’s original cabin. The return journey to Whitehorse provides one last stretch of raw wilderness and an opportunity to reflect on how this adventure in big nature has changed you and reignited your sense of wonder.

OCEAN HOP IN STYLE

You could spend a lifetime exploring Canada. Or you could touch all three of Canada’s coasts (Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific), plus iconic destinations in between, on a single vacation. Embark on a three oceans adventure featuring a private jet to take in the country’s most spectacular sights, while the most luxe lodges serve as your basecamp. Begin your adventure in St. John’s, the capital of the east coast province of Newfoundland and Labrador. While it doesn’t get as much buzz as Vancouver or Toronto, this city holds its own when it comes to fantastic dining. Just wander George Street, which claims more restaurants and bars per square foot than any street in North America.

A helicopter transfers you to isolated Fogo Island, where you’ll stay at the award-winning Fogo Island Inn. This architecturally striking hotel is operated under the Shorefast Foundation, a registered nonprofit dedicated to promoting cultural and economic resiliency in the community. Guests are paired with a local host who showcase’s the island’s heritage including the local cabin culture and boat building traditions. Depending on the season (the island has seven), you can spot icebergs off the coast or forage for wild berries.

Next, jet north to Resolute Bay where a seaplane will deliver you to Arctic Watch Wilderness Lodge, set 500 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This magical wildlife base is nestled on the shores of the Northwest Passage in Nunavut and attracts thousands of beluga whales each year. Excursions, like kayak and ATV adventures, promise close encounters with whales, muskox, Arctic foxes, and even polar bears.

“JOURNEY
from Jasper to Lake Louise along the scenic Icefields Parkway, where you’re likely to encounter black and grizzly bears, moose, and mountain goats.”

More thrilling wildlife encounters await on Canada’s west coast. A private eco-tour of Jasper National Park, a UNESCOdesignated World Heritage Site, offers opportunities to view bighorn sheep, elk, bald eagles, and even black bears. The journey from Jasper to Lake Louise travels along the scenic Icefields Parkway, where you’re likely to encounter black and grizzly bears, moose, and mountain goats. On the coast, you’ll be immersed in rugged coastline, empty beaches, and an oldgrowth forest. You’ll stay at two top lodges deep within the Great Bear Rainforest where you can view grizzlies from a floating sauna.

After being off-the-grid, jet to Vancouver, where you can indulge in such urban delights as designer boutiques along Alberni Street and acclaimed restaurants in the city’s Chinatown. Your final stop, Victoria, mixes big-city attractions with nature-based thrills. Start the day browsing the downtown shops on Lower Johnson Street and end with an exhilarating open-air zodiac adventure as you go whale-watching through the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits. When it comes to a country that offers it all, no other place on earth can top Canada.

PACK FOR A PURPOSE

Fostering meaningful global travel, one suitcase at a time.

IT started with a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope. When Rebecca Rothney, a longtime schoolteacher, coordinated a trip to Kenya in 2008, she had an a-ha moment. As she corresponded with the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on her itinerary, the company mentioned they supported a nearby clinic and school. “So we asked them what supplies were needed,” Rothney says. "Their response? A blood pressure cuff and stethoscope. I thought it was a joke. How could a clinic not have these? I was inspired to action.”

Since its launch in 2010, Pack for a Purpose has taken over 414,469 pounds of supplies and essential needs to 55 (and counting) countries. Rothney believes small changes can produce huge impact, and after founding her global nonprofit she’s proved herself right. Working with international hotel partners and tour companies, Rothney created a simple yet impactful model for travelers who want to make a difference, simply by packing a suitcase.

The process? Travelers visit the Pack for a Purpose website, search for the region and country they are visiting, access the “Essential Needs” list, and then pack up a recommended five pounds (travelers can pack more if desired). Needs lists are provided directly by the community-based projects that receive and use the supplies, enabling travelers to make informed decisions and only take items that meet the needs of those who will be using them. Once travelers arrive to their destination, they have directions on where and how to drop supplies off — simple, easy, and highly effective.

“Growing up in the south, my mother always told me, If you're going to visit somebody and accept their hospitality, be it lunch, dinner, or a weekend, you take a gift,” Rothney says. “You say thank you for the hospitality. Gratitude is at the heart of Pack for a Purpose, and when you are expressing this kind of gratitude it is also helping people who really need it."

SMALL EFFORT. BIG IMPACT

5 SIMPLE STEPS TO PACK FOR A PURPOSE

1. Visit packforapurpose.org and select your destination.

2. Find an accommodation or tour company and a project it supports.

3. Choose the supplies you wish to take from the specific items requested.

4. Drop off the supplies at the accommodation or tour company.

5. They will be delivered to the project. It’s that easy!
