NOW GO Long Layover

SPEND A FEW HOURS EXPLORING THE BEAUTY AND

CULTURE OF QATAR. BY AMIEE WHITE BEAZLEY

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A BONUS TRIP? THE LAYOVER IS A QUICK TASTE OF A LOCALE WHILE IN ROUTE TO YOUR FINAL DESTINATION. Should you be lucky enough to find yourself in Doha, Qatar, for two or more hours, here are myriad ways to indulge in one of the world’s most unique countries.

Opposite: Qatar at dusk; From top: boutique hopping at the Villaggio Mall; the flavors of Nozomi Restaurant.

SHOPPING

The capital of Qatar, Doha is home to a variety of souqs (Arabic for bazaar or marketplace). Shop for high-end jewelry at the Gold Souq and luxury carpets at the Carpet Souq. The Souq Waqif is built on the site of an ancient market, and known for its delicious garments, nuts, honey, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs.

If you have limited time and are looking for a more western shopping experience, visit the exceptional Galeries Lafayette of Parisian fame. Don’t miss Villaggio Mall, located on the west end of Doha, designed in the Venetian architectural aesthetic. You’ll find 200-plus boutiques, including Panerai, Bulgari, Valentino, Gucci, Celine, Bottega Veneta, Dior, Tom Ford, Luis Vuitton, Fendi, YSL, and more.

Finally, there’s the Mall of Qatar, the largest mall in the country and one of the finest malls in the world. Located just 20 minutes from the Hamad or Doha International airports, near Al Rayyan Stadium, the Mall of Qatar is easily accessed. The space offers 500 retail and dining options and is often photographed for its centerpiece, the “Oasis,” a 30-meter-high atrium landscaped with planted beds creating an indoor, green paradise.

CULTURE

For a small country, Qatar is rich with cultural offerings. Start the day by visiting the Museum of Islamic Art. The museum charts 1,400 years of Islamic history, with interactive exhibits allowing visitors to walk through the history of the region.

Minutes north of Doha is the historic Zubarah Fort, once the largest pearl harvesting and trading center in Qatar. Today it has been transformed into a museum displaying diverse exhibits and works of art. The UNESCO World Heritage site also offers visitors the chance to explore partial excavations of palaces, courtyard houses, mosques, defensive walls, streets, and cemeteries, dating to the 17th century. Murair Fort, a ruined and abandoned castle built by Al Bin Ali of the Utub tribe in 1778, is adjacent to Zubarah.

DINING

When exploring Doha meals at local restaurants are a must. Just minutes from Souq Waquif is Parisa, a Persian restaurant with a true—and tasty—sense of place. Or head to the Pearl, a manmade island of luxury residences, boutiques, and restaurants. Try one of seven restaurants in the Marsa Malaz Kempinski hotel such as Toro Toro Doha or Nozomi Restaurant. Another option is to find a restaurant to suit the entire family along the Corniche, a seven-kilometer, crescent-shaped promenade overlooking the Doha Bay waterfront.
