THE ETERNAL CITY IS AN ECLECTIC DICHOTOMY—ANCIENT LANDMARKS PROVIDE A BACKDROP TO MODERN AMENITIES , diverse cultures and divine symbolism coexist in harmony, and masterpieces can be centuries old frescoes or made-from-scratch culinary delights.Butdespite Rome’s vast “something for everyone” appeal, it has traditionally lacked one discerning quality—luxury accommodations in the heart of the city. The InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace is poised to satisfy this need when it opens in early 2023. Situated in downtown Rome on the legendary Via Veneto—the boulevard of sophisticated glamor—the InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace is just a few minutes from the Barberini metro stop. Couture shopping along the Via dei Condotti and Rome’s most popular park, Villa Borghese, are also nearby. The brainchild of renowned Italian architect Carlo Busiri Vici, the hotel was constructed in 1900 to host (and impress) ambassadors. Originally designed to mimic the Renaissance’s classic architectural elements, The InterContinental Rome Ambasciatori Palace still boasts a fin de siècle elegance. Imposing columns command attention, a central marble staircase evokes an air of timeless grandeur, and embellished neoclassic details perfectly capture the hotel’s historical splendor and understated luxury.All160 rooms and suites hint at subtle signs of opulence—wood floors, custommade Italian furniture, marble bathrooms with waterfall showers, plush linens, and warm-tone fabrics combine to provide a sophisticated comfort. FOR THE ROUGHLY 900 PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN CHURCHILL, CANADA, THERE ARE THREE SEASONS: BELUGA WHALE WATCHING, POLAR BEAR ENCOUNTERS, AND VIEWING THE AURORA BOREALIS—OR NORTHERN LIGHTS. Regardless the time of year, it’s always awe-inspiring adventure season in this remote town situated along Manitoba’s northern Hudson Bay coastline. The summer months are the best time to view and interact with beluga whales. In July and August, these inquisitive and vocal white whales give birth in the nearby estuaries and remain in the area to feed on capelin and Lake Cisco fish. Belugas are known to playfully engage with paddleboarders and kayakers in the Hudson Bay. While the northern lights are most impressive January through March—when the skies are the darkest and clearest (don’t miss an opportunity to dine beneath them in peak season)—Churchill boasts over 300 nights of aurora borealis activity every year, meaning almost any night is a good one to observe the northern lights. No matter the temperature, visitors can stay comfortably warm inside an Aurora Dome, a bubble-like structure
Marvelous Manitoba DISCOVER CANADA’S ADVENTUROUS SIDE. BY AMY ROBERTS providing a 360-degree view of the night sky and its kaleidoscope of violets, greens, and blues. For those seeking unfiltered appreciation of the lights at night, there are several options to stay in a mix of ecosystems—from remote yurts and eco lodges to the famed Tundra Buggy® lodge. A tundra vehicle is also a top choice for viewing polar bears—the highlight of any trip to Churchill. Known as “the polar bear capital of the world,” Churchill is the southernmost place to view polar bears in the wild (and the most accessible). From July through November, the polar bears outnumber people, as roughly 1,000 migrate to the area and gather along the coast waiting for the bay to freeze over. In the summer months, visitors can view the bears from the safety of a boat, and in the fall, a tundra vehicle provides unrivaled proximity to the bears. From inside the vehicle, you can watch them play, interact, and occasionally engage with your group. Curious bears have been known to sniff the vehicle and stand on their haunches for a better view of the humans occupying their territory.

Today, almost two full centuries later, visitors can still witness real-time evolution as volcanoes continue to erupt and lava flows form new islands within this UNESCO World Heritage archipelago. These volcanoes are responsible for the uniqueness of the Galápagos—creating rock formations that provide shelter for many animals, including the area’s unofficial mascot, the blue-footed booby. This endearing bird is one of dozens of animals that guests will delight in seeing during a cruise aboard the all-inclusive Celebrity Flora Celebrity Flora—a 100-guest, all-suite yacht— seamlessly blends sustainability and luxury. For starters, the ship boasts ecofriendly initiatives that go far beyond recycling and sourcing local ingredients. Celebrity Flora’s dynamic positioning permits her to remain on station without dropping anchors, protecting the seabed; a special silicone paint allows for easy gliding and increased fuel efficiency; and solar panels generate electricity onboard to reduce emissions.

Begin your Marrakesh discovery at La Koutoubia , Marrakesh’s bestknown landmark dating back to the 12 th century. A jewel of Almohad architecture, this tall minaret sits next to the eponymous mosque and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. La Koutoubia is also a great reference point, as you can view it from every vantage point in the city. From here, it’s a short walk to the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, a vast public space considered the heart and soul of Marrakesh. By day, the dusty, open space isn’t overly impressive, but after sundown the square comes alive with bustling food stalls, Gnaoua musicians, snake charmers, belly dancers, acrobats, storytellers, and throngs of locals and visitors. The square is so special that UNESCO declared it a “Masterpiece of World Heritage” in 2001.
F ew places in the world have the allure, enchantment, and authentic character of Marrakesh. The city that gave Morocco its name has a legendary history dating back over a thousand years. As a gateway to Africa and the terminus of the Trans-Saharan gold and salt trade routes, Marrakesh’s strategic position made the city wealthy beyond measure. Over time, Marrakesh became the capital of important Islamic dynasties, and by the 20th century this fabled city was Morocco’s most sought-after travel destination.Marrakesh sits in a sunny and dry valley and is surrounded by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, which soar to 13,000-plus feet. Cool winters and hot summers make spring and fall ideal times to visit. The city is a hub for travelers seeking active experiences, with both desert and mountain adventures, while it also claims the best golfing in North Africa. Beyond a wealth of activities, Marrakesh offers a heady mix of five-star resorts, a rich culture, sophisticated dining scene, vibrant nightlife, and world-class shopping. You could easily spend a week in Marrakesh and never run out of things to see and do.

are the famous souks (open marketplaces) of Marrakesh’s Medina . Imagine a crowded labyrinth of narrow covered walkways crammed with handicrafts and winding streets going in every direction, and you’ll get the idea. A few recommendations: The Souk Semmarine , a traditional Berber market, is considered one of the city’s finest. dozens of palaces, mausoleums, madrasas, and mosques that highlight genius Moroccan artisanship and design. Wherever you go, expect displays of Zellige tiles—Morocco’s colorful, handmade terra cotta tiles. In the heart of the Medina is the Ben Youssef Madrasa , a 14-century Islamic college. In its heyday, this Koranic learning center was the largest in Morocco and today is renowned for its serene courtyard, superb tilework, and spectacular carved ceilings. Next, take a short walk to Bahia Palace , Marrakesh’s most visited site. This royal residence was built in the 1860s with the talent of Morocco’s finest craftsmen. The palace features over 100 rooms, plus a harem and gardens, and is best known for intricately painted inlaid woodwork and rich decorations.
Bahia Palace’s displays of Zellige tiles on floors and walls will take your breath away (especially within the Grand Courtyard, which is built to impress). Morocco’s king still uses the palace to host visiting heads of state. For the absolute pinnacle of Moroccan architecture and interior design, visit the Saadian Tombs , built against the outer walls of the Kasbah. The mausoleum was built in 1603 to house the remains and family of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansour, and was rediscovered in 1917, when it was restored to its current splendid condition. Lastly, don’t miss The Chamber of the Twelve Columns . Considered the city’s most ornate gallery, it houses the remains of the Sultan and his inner circle.
ART & ADVENTURE
After visiting palaces and monuments, a leisurely stroll through one of Marrakesh’s beautiful gardens is the perfect way to rest and recharge. If you visit only one garden during your stay, make it the Jardin Majorelle —the former home of French painter Jacques Majorelle. Starting in 1924, the artist began planting and landscaping a lush twoacre garden featuring over 300 different trees, plants, and flowers surrounding an electric blue Art Deco villa. This was Majorelle’s home until the 1950s, after which the property fell into disrepair. In the 1960s, fashion designer Yves St. Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé bought the property, restored it, then opened it to the public. The resort’s unique setting is the perfect launching pad for trekking, visits to local Berber homes, or volunteering options.
If you enjoy hiking, head straight to the Atlas Mountains . A professional mountain guide can show you the most scenic paths, from which you can access colorful villages perched on cliffs, especially the trail between the villages of Asni and Imlil. The ultimate experience? Spending the night in a luxury tented camp on the edge of the Sahara. Nothing compares to getting a taste of Berber life, riding a camel into the sand dunes, marveling at the night sky, or waiting for the sunrise or sunset over the Sahara. These are just a few of the many options available to you. Before you leave Marrakesh, experience a Hammam , the traditional Moroccan cleansing and purifying ritual. Hammams use hot steam to invigorate and cleanse the body, followed by intense scrubbing and a massage. After your treatment, rest in a cool relaxation room, close your eyes, and start thinking about your next trip to Morocco.

The luxury travel company has won the prestigious title “World’s Best Safari Outfitter” by Travel + Leisure an unprecedented 10 times, and Micato is the only tour operator in Travel + Leisure’s Hall of Fame. While these honors don’t come with rings or induction ceremonies, there are well-deserved bragging rights—most of which come from Micato fans. WOULD MOST LIKE TO DINE WITH : My extended family and friends, as the combination of living abroad and the pandemic make these moments rare and extremely desirable. WISH LIST TRIP : Istanbul, Turkey. We are preparing for the opening of The Peninsula Istanbul in early 2023, which will provide me plenty of opportunities to go and explore this fascinating city. The location of the property will be perfect for that, as it’s within walking distance to the Galata Tower and facing the Golden Horn. I just can’t wait. Istanbul is such a great starting point to then go and further explore Cappadocia, Ephesus, the South Aegean Coastline, and more. So many wonders to discover.
CURRENT OBSESSION: Vintage tableware. There’s nothing like dressing up a table with pieces from the past: vintage dinner service, crystal glasses, silverware—always a new piece to find along my travels. There’s nothing like dressing up a table with pieces from the past: vintage dinner service, crystal glasses, silverware—always a new piece to find along my travels. Like in Peninsula restaurants, the attention given to setting a table is the first step to a good evening. I think I got that from my father.
