Hello, Sunshine Rediscover The Florida Keys, where sunsets are as magnificent as world-class sport fishing. IF THERE’S ONE ASPECT OF A FLORIDA KEYS VACATION THAT IS NEARLY GUARANTEED, IT’S A COLLECTIVE PASSION FOR SUNSETHUNTING. While standing in Key West’s famous Mallory Square or tucked away in a remote cove off Islamorada, when the sun curtsies, celebration ensues. Whether on the water, at a sea-to-table restaurant, or while simply driving along the famous Seven Mile Bridge, a perfectly poised Florida sunset sends cotton-candy streaks across a brilliant sky, reminding us that simplicity can be the pinnacle of travel. And when dawn arrives, the cycle begins anew—and in Florida that equates to another remarkable day on the water.

Ultimate Experiences February 2022

In Kenya, which will forever remain a favorite destination.

Architects of Exploration ONE OF MY FAVORITE ASPECTS OF BEING A TRAVEL EDITOR IS LEARNING ABOUT TRENDS AND INNOVATION. As we’ve collectively held our breath numerous times over the past two years, awaiting news and updates, something worth celebrating happened along the way. Travel leaders and luxury brands got to serious work. And while attending a recent travel conference, I witnessed this innovation first-hand. First-of-its-kind expedition ships. Hotel openings blurring the lines between art and architecture. Restaurants showcasing craft menus to support local communities even more so. And spas unveiling wellness offerings catered specifically to these times. While in the midst of adversity, progress is continually made and one aspect of travel remains the same: the power of connection. As we continue to journey together, the essence of travel—expanding personal perspectives—will never change. My hope, as you read these pages, is that your inner adventurer takes action. Go on that wishlist Caribbean trip. Book the cruise. Celebrate your milestone in a far-flung land. Because we, too, are innovators of our own journey. HAPPY EXPLORING!

CHECKING IN … THE ST. REGIS BORA BORA RESORT BORA BORA HAS LONG BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH LOVE AND ROMANCE, and for good reason. With its gemstone-colored waters, overwater bungalows, and postcard-worthy beaches, it’s difficult to envision a more unspoiled or serene destination for adoring newlyweds. And while the honeymoon phase is far from over, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort takes things to the next level—catering to families just as much as couples.

10

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

BY AMY ROBERTS

The only resort in Bora Bora to offer two separate pools— one for all ages, the other adults-only—The St. Regis also boasts a private lagoonarium featuring tranquil water and colorful marine life (look for the resident Napoleon fish, Thierry), a complimentary Kids Club, and unlimited access to a plethora of water toys including snorkel equipment, standup paddle boards, water bikes, kayaks, a Hobie Cat sailboat, and more. In addition to its famed over-water bungalows (the largest in all of Bora Bora), the resort also offers two-bedroom reefside villas, two-bedroom overwater villas, and for those with a larger family and budget, a three-bedroom Royal Estate Villa.

Opposite: The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort. Clockwise from top left: Snorkeling among the sea’s wonders during a manta ray safari; sea-to-table cuisine; toasting the mighty Mount Otemanu.

An exclusive stretch of white-sand beach, private pool, and chef’s kitchen are just a few of the amenities you’ll find in this 13,000-square-foot residence. Delightful surprises like frangipani-infused chilled towels at the beach, fresh fruit served poolside, and dedicated cruiser bikes for peddling about make it easy to understand how this five-star resort consistently nabs the number-one ranking for guest satisfaction across all Marriot properties worldwide. The only downside? Readjusting to the “real world” without 24/7 butler service.

CONSERVATION & PRESERVATION: While turquoise blue is the predominate color in French Polynesia, The St. Regis is committed to green. General manager Emmanuel Richardet has prioritized protecting the area’s delicate ecosystem and plans to eliminate all single-use plastics by 2023. Other initiatives include an onsite coral restoration program, upgrading the resort’s waste management systems, and even hiring a full-time environmental engineer focused on sustainability. SERENITY NOW: Nestled on its own island in the resort’s private lagoonarium, the Iridium Spa bestows

floor-to-ceiling windows ushering in panoramic views of Mount Otemanu. Treatments include body scrubs, wraps, facials, and more. For the ultimate in relaxation, try the signature Polynesian massage.

BON APPÉTIT: With a total of four restaurants sprinkled across the resort, plus a bar menu and 24/7 room service, dining options are plentiful. But a meal at the Lagoon Restaurant by Jean-Georges is widely considered the top culinary experience in all of Bora Bora. Known for his eclectic mix of flavors in both food and drink (think jalapeno, thyme, and kiwi cocktails), Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s creations are both award-winning and mouth-watering. Plus, a vegan and vegetarian menu is available upon request. UNDER THE SEA: Snorkeling with stingrays and reef sharks is a must, and the resort’s concierge can arrange beneath-the-sea excursions. There are several experiences available; be sure to book one that includes a manta ray safari. And for those who are scuba certified, dive a little deeper and explore the abundant pelagic marine species.

PONANT DEBUTS LE COMMANDANT CHARCOT. BY MEREDITH DIERS

READY TO EXPLORE THE ENDS OF THE EARTH? Discover the immensity, silence, and unknown of the Arctic and Antarctica as you experience sea ice on the very first hybrid-electric polar exploration ship—Le Commandant Charcot by Ponant. The ship navigates deep into the middle of ice, where only a PC2 polar class ship can safely venture. What’s more, travelers will experience a combination of exploration and science. Biologists, naturalists, engineers, glaciologists, and geologists are all on deck to ensure safety and share their passion for the poles.

SAILING SUSTAINABLY Le Commandant Charcot opens the gateways to the highest latitudes of the Arctic and Antarctic. The vessel is equipped with a hybrid LNG propulsion system, battery bank, routing software, and energy management systems that contribute to optimizing and maintaining fuel consumption. The ship also recycles its own energy as the Brazier, Blue Lagoon pools, and promenade deck benches are all heated via recuperation of energy generated by the ship’s propulsion system. The ship also features wildlife detectors and anchor-free electronic positioning to protect the seabed and marine wildlife. With a reduction in noise and vibrations as well as zero fine-particle emissions, Le Commandant Charcot works to preserve the pristine regions of the poles. Plus, Ponant is committed to zero breaking of ancient ice.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES Ponant travelers will encounter an exceptional range of wildlife in marine sanctuaries overlooked by ice shelves, cathedral-like icebergs, and unexplored volcanic islands. Le Commandant Charcot passengers can also experience the thrill of polar adventures via a kayak, zodiac, or hovercraft to get up close to wildlife. After a day exploring the ice, relax in the ship’s Blue Lagoon heated pool while enjoying passing vistas of ice floe and towering icebergs.

MENTORING GLOBAL STEWARDS WITH LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS. REGARDED AS THE FATHER OF ECOTOURISM, LarsEric Lindblad brought the first non-scientific travelers to such fragile and far-flung locales as Antarctica and the Galápagos more than 55 years ago. And he never questioned bringing along his son, Sven-Olof Lindblad, on his adventures. He believed the key to preserving our wild places was to bring people—especially the next generation—to experience them first-hand, so they could understand the importance of protecting them for generations to come. Sven-Olof has carried on his father’s legacy with the National Geographic Global Explorers program developed in conjunction with National Geographic Education. Designed with multi-generational families in mind, these naturalist-led expeditions encourage shared activities that actively explore the natural environment and unite families. Instead of parents at cocktail hour and kids in the game room, families

gather together in the lounge before dinner and review the day’s wildlife sightings, from large creatures (humpback whales) to small (bald eagles). Parents get a fresh perspective when they get to see a destination through the eyes of their kids, while kids get to play naturalist as they chronicle observations in Field Notebooks, view plankton under video microscopes, and learn to drive a Zodiac. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic-certified photography instructors (CPIs) are also on hand to give tips on capturing the perfect wildlife shots. It’s a learning experience for all ages that leaves travelers with a deeper understanding of the natural world and a commitment to being future environmental stewards. Here are highlights from Lindblad’s long-running trips in Alaska, Baja, and the Galápagos, as well as a look at the National Geographic Global Explorers program, which debuted in Antarctica in December 2021.

OCEAN SCAPE EXCLUSIVE & ALL-INCLUSIVE DEFINES SEABOURN.

WHEN IT COMES TO EXPLORING THE WORLD’S MOST REMOTE AND WILD PLACES, “ultra luxury” is rarely found anywhere in the guidebooks or marketing materials. For the most part, intrepid globetrotters have shrugged their collective shoulders and accepted the notion that one usually must forfeit comfort in favor of adventure. Yet Seabourn Venture turns that long-held belief on its head: the ship is essentially a floating five-star resort.

30

U LT I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

With its maiden voyage scheduled for April 2022, Seabourn Venture combines sumptuous amenities and unparalleled service with access to some of the planet’s most untamed locales—from the Amazon to Antarctica. On board, guests will find elegant and spacious suites—all 132 of them are oceanfront and feature private verandas— as well as walk-in closets, heated lockers, flat-screen TVs, writing desks, full bathrooms, plush robes and slippers, vanities, and more. Thoughtfully designed and wellappointed common spaces include multiple lounges and upscale dining options, a card room, wellness spa, fitness center, and even a dance club! In the ship’s Discovery Center, the venue for enlightened conversation and intellectual

enrichment, the on board expedition team (a collection of 26 wilderness experts, scientists, historians, and naturalists) will lead lectures and group discussions about the regions and wildlife found along the journey. This state-of-art, theatre-style room is large enough to accommodate all guests at once and includes several high-definition viewing screens. Outside, passengers can take a dip in the heated infinity pool, relax in one of the two hot tubs, or lounge with a cocktail on the expansive sun deck. Even better, the ship holds two custom-built submarines ready to provide guests with an unforgettable underwater experience. No matter the destination, shore excursions can be expected along the way, though they can’t always be planned. Itineraries are often shaped by calving glaciers, floating icebergs, migrating humpbacks, and curious polar bears. Afterall, in the places Seabourn Venture takes you, nature dictates what’s next.

IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION

While it might be difficult to imagine a ship or experience that can match what the Seabourn Venture presents, its sister ship, Seabourn Pursuit, promises to do just that. Currently under construction, Seabourn Pursuit is scheduled for delivery in February 2023, with

its maiden voyage to Greenland, Iceland, and Norway planned just a couple of months later in the spring and early summer. In August of 2023, the ship will journey through some of the most remote areas in the Northern Hemisphere from Kangerlussuaq, Greenland to Nome, Alaska. Like Seabourn Venture, Seabourn Pursuit is built to PC6 Polar Class regulations and equipped with the latest technology to ensure the highest standards

of safety and comfort in all climates and conditions. The ship will feature the same level of luxury and space, gathering places, custom submarines, Zodiacs, kayaks, and esteemed team of experts that are all part of the Seabourn Venture experience. Equally as exciting is the lineup of adventurous voyages for the summer of 2023 on Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit. The program includes the line’s firstever voyages to the Northeast and Northwest Passages in the Arctic, where guests will discover two of the world’s most remote and fascinating regions filled with an abundance of history, wildlife, and unique landscapes.

For more than 30 years, Royal Caribbean Group has been going green and investing in its commitment to adopt a non-carbon-based future. In partnership with World Wildlife Fund in 2016, the company set specific, ambitious, and measurable 2020 sustainability targets to reduce its environmental footprint, increase sustainable tourism, respect coastal communities and cultural heritage, and support WWF’s global ocean conservation work. The group’s luxury brand, Silversea, is now redefining sustainability at sea with its new Evolution-class ships—one of the greenest cruise ships ever built—and slated to debut in Europe in summer 2023. The new class of ships, the Silver Nova and the Nova Class, are the first hybrid-powered ships free of local emissions while at port, utilizing a fuel cell system, battery technology, and dual-fuel engines using liquefied natural gas as the main

fuel. Liquified natural gas emits less CO2 and 97 percent fewer particulates than normal fuel oil used on ships, while a bank of batteries helps save fuel by optimizing the overall ship power system. And the ships will remain emissionsfree while at port—an industry first—thanks to a state-of-the-art fuel cell system that employs hydrogen technology to provide 100-percent power. This trio of power sources will allow Evolutionclass ships to achieve a 40 percent overall reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions per double occupancy when compared to the brand’s previous class of ships. Other first-of-its-kind eco initiatives include the newly developed Micro Auto Gasification System. With a decreased carbon footprint of ship construction, it reduces onboard waste volume, resulting in lower incineration emissions.

Evolution-class ships will also feature Silversea’s new Otium wellness program, which will debut in spring 2022 on Silver Dawn. A nod to the cruise line’s Italian heritage, Otium takes inspiration from the leisurely Roman times when people philosophized, feasted, and relaxed. Roman baths, a staple of the ancient lifestyle, were the muse for thermal areas intended for socializing in the new spa, as well as the Otium bespoke bathing experience. Every suite category will feature a multi-sensory soak prepared by Silversea’s butlers, complemented by candlelight, music, and haute snacks like caviar and champagne. Indulgences extend to the Otium food experience, which includes an in-suite comfort food menu of gourmet popcorn and lobster

rolls, available 24 hours per day. The delights continue with sthe brand’s culinary program S.A.L.T., which is overseen by James Beard Journalism Award winner and former Saveur magazine editor-in-chief, Adam Sachs. First introduced in 2021 on Silver Moon and rolling out aboard Silver Dawn in 2022, the immersive food experience will be a signature of all Evolutionclass ships, connecting guests to destinations through the lens of

food, people, and culinary traditions. A unique narrative approach brings regional chefs, local historians, cookbook writers, winemakers, and farmers onboard to share their passion and expertise through talks and hands-on cooking lessons in the S.A.L.T. Lab. Local drink specialties dictate the cocktails served at S.A.L.T. Bar, and menus at the modern S.A.L.T. Kitchen restaurant will change based on where the ship is sailing to showcase regional flavors and ingredients. Evolution-class ships truly speak to the interests and concerns of a new generation of travelers, ushering in a new era of wellness, cultural and culinary immersion, and sustainability initiatives at sea.

TRAVEL with PURPOSE Micato’s fresh approach to sustainable change. IN 1966, SECOND-GENERATION KENYANS FELIX AND JANE PINTO STARTED A LITTLE SAFARI COMPANY NAMED MICATO. Over the decades, their commitment to conservation, first-class service, and exceptional guiding in East Africa and Southern Africa has earned them world’s best safari outfitter accolades for a record-setting 10 times by Travel + Leisure magazine. The outfitter stands apart for the depth and breadth of its exclusive, truly transformational experiences. Guests don’t just spot wildlife from the back of a Jeep. They meet with acclaimed wildlife conservationists, have the privilege of being honored guests at tribal celebrations, and observe fossils one-on-one with the first family of paleoanthropology, the Leakeys. Micato only works with the finest lodges, like Ol Jogi Ranch and Segera Retreat, and when it comes to surprise touches, Micato one-ups the sundowner tradition with more fanciful affairs, like a white-tablecloth meal served at a camel derby match in the Namib desert.

The family-owned safari operator’s unconventional approach to sustainability has earned it a reputation as an industry leader in responsible luxury travel. The company believes that education is the most powerful tool for sustainable change in Africa. Through AmericaShare, a program founded in 1986 by Micato employee Lorna Macleod, Micato executes educational and community outreach programs dedicated to improving lives of the vulnerable and impoverished women and children living in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi, especially those who have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Guests can visit the Micato-AmericaShare Harambee Community Centre, a multi-purpose facility built through the generosity of past Micato travelers, and witness first-hand the direct impact these charitable initiatives have on the lives of these children and their families. Guests also have the opportunity to visit the nearby headquarters of Huru, which manufactures reusable sanitary pads—1,600,000 to date—distributed in free Huru Kits to more than 189,000 girls in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Huru Kits have saved girls 5.1 million school days that otherwise would have been lost. While trekking through the Chyulu Cloud Forest near Mt. Kilimanjaro and sandboarding Kenya’s remote Suguta Valley are remarkable experiences, many guests say it’s the face-to-face community encounters through Micato’s AmericaShare program that leave the deepest impressions when they return home.

Go north and dare to explore. The heartstrings of our wanderlust have never been pulled harder during these last two years. But all that we’ve been seeking— space to breathe and reflect, a wilderness of epic proportions, a culinar y scene that takes our tastebuds around the world and indigenous cultures that enrich us with their stories, foodways, and spiritual beliefs— lies just north of the American border. C

Canada, the second largest country on the planet, beckons with a spectacular diversity of people, places, food, and wildlife. Boasting three coastlines and vast space between them, each season promises new experiences that will leave you feeling energized, renewed, enriched, and ready for a return trip. Here is a snapshot of the not-to-miss wonders you’ll only find in Canada during each unique season.

WINTER

When snow falls, the legendary ski slopes of Whistler and Mont Tremblant capture the imagination. But Canada’s winter season offers more than downhill thrills. The country’s Northwest Territories are world renowned as one of the best places to view the aurora borealis as often as 240 nights of the year. Dark, clear skies make the Yukon one of the top viewing spots to witness this otherworldly celestial display, also known as the northern lights. Shakat Tun Wilderness Camp in the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations is run by James Allen, an elder from the Southern Tutchone First Nations. He joins guests around evening campfires to await Mother Nature’s light show while sharing stories of how the northern lights are a message from ancestors who have passed on. Discover Canada’s southernmost ice fields via a private helicopter experience above Whistler and the Fitzsimmons Range in British Columbia, where you’ll explore the untrammeled Garibaldi Provincial Park. After touching down, navigate ancient ice caps on a fully guided tour.

SPRING

While the wilderness transitions seasons, take advantage of the rich culture of Canada’s vibrant, multi-cultural cities. In Toronto, the Royal Ontario Museum is a must-visit for its expansive collection of historic and cultural artifacts with exhibits dedicated to everything from Canada‘s First Peoples to 1,000-piece fossil collections representing the

dawn of life on our planet. Montreal lures visitors with its Francophile food scene and annual Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, the largest jazz festival in the world. On the west coast, Vancouver delivers a perfect dose of nature and culture with its expansive network of bike paths and diverse display of Asian cuisine found in the largest Chinatown in Canada.

SUMMER

Unforgettable wildlife viewing experiences are available coast to coast throughout summer. Further east, the northern reaches of Manitoba deliver once-in-a-lifetime land-and-sea safaris where you’ll witness polar bears, beluga whales, wolves, and black bears in their natural habitat. On the west coast, whale migration is at its peak along the coastline and black bears are easy to spot along the rocky shoreline in protected bays of the Broughton Archipelago. And in Banff National Park, this is prime time to view elk, deer, and bighorn sheep thriving in the Rockies. While viewing Niagara Falls is reason enough to visit Canada, there is more to experience around the Niagara Escarpment, with 50-plus wineries in the area producing some of Canada’s most coveted wines. Take a tour and sample sparkling wines and rosés served at the Insta-worthy Trius Winer, or discover the ice wines found in Peller Estates’ frosty 10Below Icewine Lounge.

FA L L

This is the season to hunker down on the edge of the wilderness in one of Canada’s many nature lodges. Notoriously elusive, grizzly bears make a rare appearance to feed on spawning salmon on the Oxford River from late August through October—and Sonora Resort, a fivestar stay on the west coast, affords guests prime viewing opportunities helmed by expert guides. Churchill, a remote town in Manitoba, is dubbed the polar bear capital of the world, and this is the time of year these powerful creatures move to the shore from inland, affording visitors a unique perspective. Fall—or really any time of the year—is also the ideal time to visit the remote shores of Prince Edward Island. With more than 90 (yes, 90!) beaches to explore, stroll through remote coves, swim in the inviting Gulf of Saint Lawrence, or simply watch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Lastly, if train travel is more your speed, the decadent and innovative Rocky Mountaineer has been elevating rail travel for more than 30 years. Its signature glass-domed car frames indelible views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and Jasper National Park, which are on brilliant display during Canada’s enticing fall season.

A Day in a Life: Lisa Helps The Mayor of Victoria, British Columbia, shares her favorite ways to enjoy the city. MORNING ROUTINE “The best way to start the day in the summer is with an ocean swim. I head down to Banfield Park, where there are always morning swimmers in the water. You can swim out to a floating dock that has a tree planted on it.” FAVORITE WINTER ACTIVITY “Victoria is one of the best places for leisure all times of year. We get snow once or twice each winter, but you can recreate outdoors allyear round. The city is surrounded by 300-plus acres of world-class parks. You can hop in your car and be in a rainforest in 20 minutes. I have a tradition of going for a long hike every New Year’s day.” GO-TO NEIGHBORHOOD COFFEE “Located across from City Hall, the Sherwood does double duty—a coffee shop by day and a bar at night. They make a really mean decaf soy latte. I often head there Fridays for late afternoon work meetings. The bar has good local beers on tap and the menu has great appetizers ranging from candied nuts to Brussels sprouts as well as heavier mains.” CULTURE FIX “The Royal BC Museum is the biggest and best museum in the province. Their exhibits are always changing. Right now, they have a fascinating display on orcas as well as an exhibition called Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum, which examines the story of Afro-diasporic British Columbia history. Both run through March 2022.” From left: Sonora Resort features a five-star guide service; a grizzly bear searches for a salmon dinner.

A NIGHT OUT “Even though we’re a relatively small city, we have an amazing live music scene. Any night you can wander into a performance venue for really great music. Alix Goolden Performance Hall and Cenote Lounge are two I frequent.”

EYE CANDY

Stay at these art-forward and highly designed hotels and resorts, and visual inspiration is all but guaranteed. BY AMY ROBERTS

ART AND ARCHITECTURE HAVE LONG BEEN INTERWOVEN IN A TAPESTRY OF INSPIRATION AND INTENTION. From Italian frescoes designed to mimic marble columns to Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, it’s nearly impossible to confidently separate the artistic from the architectural. So why bother? That seems to be the question some of the world’s top hotels are asking. Instead of making a distinction between the two, these properties celebrate the age-old alliance. You could say they have a good night’s sleep ... down to an art.

ME DUBAI: DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

In a city of excessive wealth and over-the-top everything, it can be difficult to stand out. But despite sharing a home with the world’s tallest building, indoor ski slopes, and the first-ever seven-star hotel (complete with a gold leaf covering roughly 19,000-square-feet of space), the ME Dubai still manages to evoke a sense of awe. That’s largely because it’s the only hotel in the world designed by the late, Pritzker-winning architect, Dame Zaha Hadid. Even the most creative SciFi writers would be hard-pressed to imagine such a building. Each of the 93 guest rooms and gallery-style spaces embody Hadid’s signature organic flowing shapes and geometric design. Curved glass panels, wavy furnishings, and walls that fall somewhere between funhouse and futuristic make guests feel as though they’ve stepped onto a luxury spaceship. Aside from its boundary-breaking design, ME Dubai is an otherworldly escape for the world’s posh and creative. The hotel offers views of the Burj Khalifa—the world’s tallest tower—and just across the street is the Dubai Canal’s waterfront promenade (where you can watch yachts set sail on the Persian Gulf). For the ultimate in couture shopping, fine dining, and entertainment, the city’s cultural epicenter is just a short drive away. Careful Curation: After a day of exploring, the generous poolside foot massages offered by the spa staff are a delightful indulgence.

From left: Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada; the art-centric 21c Museum Hotel Chicago; Miami Beach’s swanky Faena Hotel.

FAENA HOTEL, MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA

The neighborhoods of Miami Beach have long been chameleon-esque, able to shapeshift in an effort to complement the current vibe. The budding Faena District is no exception; yet it is exceptional. The district stretches from 32nd to 36th Street on historic Collins Avenue and has quickly claimed status as the city’s cultural hub. In the heart of the district, you’ll find the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, a conception of well-known hotelier and developer Alan Faena. In its first year of operation, the hotel earned the prestigious Forbes five-star rating—making it the first luxury resort ever to claim that status so quickly. Faena pays homage to its past (it was formerly the iconic Saxony Hotel), with a reimagined Art Deco meets mid-century glamour design. Hollywood costume designers and producers were beckoned to blur the lines between present-day luxury and 1950s opulence. A striking red-carpet entrance sets the tone as you walk the beach-front property and discover works by the legendary artist Damien Hirst. The entire Faena District was created with intention. Just steps from the hotel you’ll find the Faena Forum, a landmark building that serves as

62

U L T I M AT E E X P E R I E N C E S

an incubator for creative expression. Guest galleries, high-end shopping, and experimental art can also be explored throughout the district. Careful Curation: Faena Hotel Miami celebrates the culinary arts just as much as the visual arts. Inside the hotel you’ll find four restaurants offering a variety of options, including Pao by chef Paul Qui.

FOGO ISLAND INN, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA

Named “one of the most dramatic buildings on the planet,” by Selector Magazine, the Fogo Island Inn’s bold design is matched only by its end-of-the-world location. Each of the 29 guest rooms are perched on stilts to avoid damaging the natural landscape and minimize the building’s impact. The design is a throwback to the area’s 400-year-old tradition of creating structures that are light on their feet. The juxtaposition between the inn’s radical contemporary architectural design and the centuries-old fishing village it calls home is at once startling and pure. The harsh angles and sharp contours create an effortless balance with Fogo Island’s jagged and severe topography. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout provide the perfect vantage point for guests to view the surrounding North Atlantic coastline.

Given its remote location, the inn is ideal for those seeking a secluded getaway. A rooftop deck with woodfired saunas and hot tubs, plus an art gallery, library, fitness center, theatre, and restaurant provide all the necessary comforts. Fogo Island Inn is an initiative of Shorefast, a registered charity with the mandate to build community wellbeing for Fogo Island. The Inn is a 100% social business and a community asset: all operating surpluses are reinvested in Shorefast’s initiatives to help secure a resilient future for Fogo Island. Careful Curation: Upon reservation, guests are provided an estimate of the carbon footprint of their visit and can opt to purchase carbon offsets that support local sustainability efforts.

21C MUSEUM HOTEL CHICAGO CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

21c Museum Hotel Chicago offers guests the chance to have their own “night at the museum.” Unlike the movie, the exhibitions don’t come to life after the lights are off, but perhaps that’s because the lights never turn off. The galleries are open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.

Boasting more than 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, 21c Chicago is the continent’s only multi-venue museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting art of the 21st century. Curated exhibitions and site-specific installations draw on global, thought-provoking themes. Guests can also enjoy guided docent tours, cultural programming, and prominently featured local artwork. If that’s not enough, just step outside. Located on Rush Street, 21c Chicago easily accesses the city’s famed Magnificent Mile and downtown museums. The museum and hotel were envisioned by the famed architectural firm Deborah Berke Partners. While the signature staircase in the two-story lobby is the statement piece, the welcoming sculptural sofas also deserve some attention. In each of the 297 rooms you’ll find original artworks and a calming color palette that draws on the vibrant Chicago skyline and nearby Lake Michigan. With its seamless mix of function and luxury, it’s little wonder 21c Chicago was recently voted one of the top hotels in the Midwest in the Conde Nast Traveler “Reader’s Choice Awards.” Careful Curation: If you’re looking to entertain and inspire, 21c Chicago offers event space for private parties from 10 to up to 300 guests.
