TALL tale
Tanzania’s game drives call for exaggerated elation.
If travel were a book, the chapter on Africa may just have the most exclamation points. When recounting most any game drive experience, the effect on both storyteller and listener is dramatic, often conjuring grins and shares of sensational iPhone pics. And while the memories from travel — no matter where they are fostered — remain a part of the journey long after the return flight is wheels down, there’s nothing quite like viewing giraffe and zebra on a sunset safari. This year, companies like Micato and African Travel, Inc. are up-leveling African adventures with refined and customized approaches to private travel. So go ahead, imagine what’s possible. Your own tall tale awaits.

Dive in!
WITH EACH NEW YEAR, INSTEAD OF SETTING PERSONAL RESOLUTIONS, I REFINE MY TRAVEL WISH LIST. There are places that remain from the year prior — Greece, Morocco, South Africa — yet as we grow and evolve, so does our wanderlust. Topping my 2023 list? A dive trip with my 13-year-old son, who recently received his PADI certification. As such, the far-flung reefs of Little Cayman Island or the Blue Hole in Belize now top my list. And while it may only be February, time sure speeds up as the years tick by, which is why working with a Travel Advisor is as paramount as time with a business coach or personal trainer. I consider travel my most cherished mentor. Afterall, we have one shot to discover earth’s wild landscapes and different cultures — what a gift! I hope that within these pages you, too, find inspiration in travel’s ability to expand horizons, both literally and figuratively.

RARE FIND
CHECKING INTO THE RENOVATED BAB AL SHAMS DESERT RESORT & SPA
BY AMY ROBERTSOpposite: Resort architecture reflects the natural landscape. From top: Rooms are replete with modern design and neutral tones; exploring nearby sand dunes.
IN A CITY OF OVER-THE-TOP EVERYTHING, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO STAND OUT. But despite sharing a home with the world’s tallest building, indoor ski slopes, and the world’s finest hotels (complete with a gold leaf covering 19,000-square-feet of space), Bab Al Shams on the edge of Dubai still manages to evoke a sense of wonderment and awe. In part, that’s because when this resort reopens in early 2023, it will do so as the first property in the Rare Finds portfolio, a collection of diverse and distinct properties recognized for their proximity to rich culture, soul-rattling experiences, and genuine connection to the customs and history of their environment.
RENOVATION: Having earned its reputation as one of Dubai’s most sought-after desert escapes, Bab Al Shams has long been preferred by travelers seeking an authentic desert destination. The hotel is removed enough from the city’s hustle and bustle that gazelles, Arabian oryx, and other wildlife are frequently spotted, and the resort is framed by the surrounding sand dunes. This relaxed and unrushed vibe will remain when the resort reopens in the spring of 2023 to unveil a new look after nearly a year of extensive renovations. It will pay homage to local history, resembling a revived rural Arab village set against the backdrop of Dubai’s desert landscape. But the rooms, restaurants, and common spaces will celebrate a newly refined aesthetic and subtle opulence, punctuated by redefined experiences.
RECREATION: Some of those unique experiences include a robust selection of leisure and play options. The desert’s black canopy is ideal for star gazing with a local astronomer. During the daytime, the expansive vistas of sand and sky are best viewed from atop a camel’s back. Equestrian sports allow guests to connect with one of the UAE’s most cherished customs, while nature walks, archery, desert safaris, hotair ballooning, and wildlife viewing are also easily accessible in the tranquility of the Marmoom Desert Conservation reserve.
CULINARY: Why only have dinner when you can have dinner and a show?

performances that tantalize all the senses. Live cooking stations that deliver mouthwatering mezze, kebabs, and other traditional Arabic cuisine are complemented with locally and responsibly sourced ingredients at the hotel’s quintessentially iconic Al Hadheerah restaurant.
CALM: One of the most anticipated updates of the completely renovated Bab Al Shams is the resort’s Desert Spa, which will offer detoxifying and healing treatments, among others. Therapeutic sessions that draw heat and healing from the nearby sand dunes, along with an extensive list of massages, are also available. A couple’s treatment room, sauna, steam room, and relaxation area are part of the new space, and the temperature-controlled infinity pool, complete with private cabanas, will remain a favorite way to pass the time. If the desert air isn’t enough, guests can work up a sweat in the new state-of-the-art fitness facility or inquire about a customized training program.
PUERTO RICO PASSPORT
JOURNESE ® OFFERS ACCESS TO FINE CARIBBEAN CULTURE. BY
JOYFULLY COMBINING FOUR CENTURIES OF SPANISH CARIBBEAN CULTURE, A DASH OF AFRICAN AND TAINO TRADITIONS, and a heaping spoonful of American influence, it’s easy to understand why Puerto Rico is part of, but also apart from, the US. The archipelago is an interwoven tapestry of ancient and avantgarde, vibrant and verdant, bustling and beach. Of the world’s five bioluminescent bays, three of these natural wonders are found in Puerto Rico. The island is also home to the world’s finest rums; little wonder it’s the birthplace of vacation’s official drink — the pina colada.
Enjoy everything Puerto Rico offers from any of these top lodging options.
AMY ROBERTSTHE ST. REGIS BAHIA BEACH RESORT
Puerto Rico’s first and only AAA Five Diamond resort, The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort is located on a former coconut plantation spanning over 480 acres and is perfectly situated between the El Yunque National Forest and Espíritu Santo River State Preserve. This pristine natural setting is home to more than 240 unique species of flora and fauna, a Certified Gold Audubon Signature Sanctuary, tennis center, expertly designed 18hole golf course, cabana-framed pools, nature trails, and endless tropical splendor. Even better, personal butlers are available 24/7 to tend to your every need; and they do so with legendary precision.
DORADO BEACH, A RITZCARLTON RESERVE
Putting the “ritzy” in Ritz-Carlton, the Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is one of the finest hotels in the region. Spanning 50 acres, the resort entices the world’s most discerning travelers with an elevated ambiance and white-glove service. It also exudes romance. As fans of pop culture know, this is where rapper Colson Baker proposed to actress Megan Fox (she said yes). But the resort is more than celebrity fairytales and exquisite attention to detail. A top-rated kids program includes interactive and entertaining experiences featuring coral reefs and forests, recycling and sustainability, storytelling, art, and more.
FAIRMONT EL SAN JUAN HOTEL
One of the Caribbean’s most soughtafter retreats, the Fairmont El San Juan is just minutes from downtown San Juan on Puerto Rico’s awardwinning Isla Verde Beach. Genuine Puerto Rican hospitality can be expected, as well as timeless stories sprinkled with island lore. The hotel is equal parts modern and a vintage icon — it’s not hard to imagine society headliners from decades past crooning in the nightclub, or locals celebrating milestone events in the hotel’s ornate ballrooms. These visions of the past are juxtaposed against the hotel’s luxe fullservice spa, well-appointed suites, exceptional pools, a world-class fitness center, live entertainment, and numerous dining options.
THE ROYAL SONESTA SAN JUAN
Overlooking palm-fringed Isla Verde Beach and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, the recently renovated Royal Sonesta San Juan houses seven restaurants and bars — including Ocean Breeze, Isla Verde’s only oceanfront bar where Mediterraneaninspired cuisine is served alongside stunning views. Additional amenities include a lagoon-style swimming pool with a swim-up bar, ocean-facing fitness center, and a full-service spa. Each of the 398 elegantly appointed and contemporary guest rooms offer picturesque vistas of the turquoise ocean or vibrant city of San Juan. The nearby El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and worthy of exploration.

The Essence of Spain
INTERCONTINENTAL BARCELONA IS A DELECTABLE ECO-FRIENDLY URBAN OASIS.
WHEN TERMS LIKE “ECO-FRIENDLY” AND “ENVIRONMENTALLY FOCUSED” ARE USED AS ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE A HOTEL , they are often associated with intimate boutique properties that can present those claims largely because of their small spaces, limited accommodation offerings, and independent ownership.
InterContinental Barcelona flips that script on its head. Located in the heart of the city’s hilly and historic Montjuïc district and just steps from several notable landmarks including the Magic Fountain, InterContinental Barcelona is part of the IHG hotels and resorts portfolio — the largest luxury hotel brand in the world. After a massive remodel, the property
reopened in October 2021 with the goal of sustainably revolutionizing sophisticated urban tourism. And by all accounts, it has done so with great aplomb.
In the summer of 2022, the 5-star hotel was honored at the Barcelona Sustainable Tourism Awards Ceremony for its active commitment to environmental stewardship. InterContinental Barcelona was specifically acknowledged for its rooftop landscaping project, which features vegetable patches, aromatic and medicinal plants, shrubs, fruit trees, and natural grasses. Combined, the flora and fauna span nearly half an acre and are expected to offset roughly 30 percent of the hotel’s energy consumption. The area also offers an oxygen-infused respite in the middle of the city.
Even better, the green rooftop serves as a place for meetings, conferences, and special events. In addition to the garden, the rooftop boasts an infinity swimming pool, cocktail lounge, and 360-degree views of Barcelona’s sparkling skyline.
Inside, InterContinental Barcelona oozes effortless luxe. Each of the hotel’s 273 guest rooms and gathering spaces project a contemporary-meetscomfortable vibe. The aesthetic includes natural woods and high-shine marble floors contrasted against swanky lighting and gold embellishments.
And while InterContinental Barcelona has quickly earned its reputation as a planet-forward cool kid, the posh property is perhaps best known for its onsite Quirat Restaurant, where Spain’s youngest Michelin-starred chef, Víctor Torres, delights guests with inspiring flavors and unforgettable culinary experiences. It should come as no surprise Chef Torres can often be found hand-selecting produce for the night’s menu from the hotel’s rooftop garden.
Quirat is known for its contemporary Catalan-based dishes, delicately prepared tasting menus, and seasonal offerings. Every dish is thoughtfully curated to connect guests to the chef’s
personal interpretation of quirat, which when translated from Catalan means “the measurement of purity amongst the elements that make up the earth.”
True to its namesake, the gastronomic experience at Quirat is based on simplicity and authenticity. The menu is designed around locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Current dishes include scarlet shrimp and caviar tartlet, smoked butter and homemade guanciale
toast, and persimmon panna cotta with lemon textures.
Other on-property restaurants include the Mediterranean-inspired Arrel Restaurant, the seasonal 173 Rooftop Restaurant, which offers international cuisine, and Gebre bar, where a variety of specialty cocktails and refreshments can be enjoyed.

A VIKING VOYAGE CELEBRATES ANTARCTICA’S HARD-TO-REACH ALLURE.
A TRIP TO ONE OF THE WORLD’S HARSHEST CLIMATES DEMANDS A SHIP THAT IS UP TO THE TASK. Built specifically for Antarctic voyages with both safety and comfort in mind, Viking’s two new custom-built, polar-class ships — Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis — have joined the fleet.
Energy-efficient and environmentally conscious, these new ships are among the industry’s first recipients of the SILENT-E notations. As the highest-level certification for quiet ship propulsion, the certification not only minimizes underwater noise pollution (a little-known environmental impact cruises may have on delicate ecosystems) but provides a more peaceful cruising experience.
DISCOVER THE LAST CONTINENT
With itineraries cruising the Antarctic peninsula, guests will witness serene snow-covered landscapes, towering icebergs and glaciers, and magnificent wildlife sightings such as penguins, seals, and whales.
With only 378 guests onboard, voyagers can expect intuitive service along with plenty of space to move about the ship. Between four different dining experiences, a Nordic Spa, library, Science Lab, and more, there is never a dull moment aboard the ship.
ANTARCTIC ACCOMMODATIONS
Six stateroom categories range from 222-1,223 square feet. All have kingsized beds and ensuite bathrooms equipped with glass-enclosed showers and heated floors. A unique floor-to-
ceiling drying closet with circulating warm air stands at the ready to dry clothing and expedition gear between activities.
No matter which category guests choose from, each stateroom is specially designed to maximize exposure to the views, sans prolonged exposure to the elements. Voyagers can stand in awe of the polar landscapes, deep blue Antarctic Ocean, and the resident creatures that may appear right from their staterooms’ Nordic balconies. Each room features this unique private terrace — a sunroom that converts to an alfresco viewing platform — complete with an elbowheight observational shelf designed to help stabilize binoculars.
ENRICHED EXCURSIONS
Through exclusive partnerships with several prestigious scientific institutions, Viking is the world’s leading scientific enrichment environment. A Viking Expedition Team of experts, including field research scientists, photographers, and adventure guides, accompanies each journey, offering an immersive, one-ofa-kind travel experience through the wonders of Antarctica.
On board, experts provide guests with daily briefings and world-class
lectures about the destination. And when exploring on shore, guests can assist in fieldwork like monitoring migrating birds or join in activities from kayaking to learning professional nature photography.
INDOOR-OUTDOOR ONBOARD
Each ship features a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces designed for guests to view Antarctica’s otherworldly surroundings in maximum comfort. Gather around the lava rock “fire” pits on the Finse Terrace, an outdoor lounge built to warm, and shelter guests from the elements while maximizing views. Stand at the bow for forward-facing views, and duck into The Shelter — a partially enclosed space to warm up with a hot beverage before braving the elements.
For those who prefer to stay fully indoors, the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Explorers’ Lounge and Living Room are ideal spaces to curl up with a good book and glass of wine, hot tea, or cocktail and watch the world float by.

SAVOR GLOBALLY INSPIRED CUISINE ABOARD OCEANIA CRUISES .
BY AMY ROBERTSOCEANIA CRUISES IS RECOGNIZED ACROSS THE INDUSTRY FOR TWO THINGS: APPROACHABLE LUXURY AND CULINARY EXPERIENCES THAT WOULD MAKE EVEN MARTHA STEWART BLUSH WITH PRIDE.
The cruise line’s seven ships are intimate upscale enclaves and offer a high-class experience without being haughty. Another defining feature of Oceania Cruises is the focus on food. Never an afterthought, food is emphasized on each excursion — gourmet cooking classes, custom culinary tour shore excursions, and exclusive experiences to coveted restaurants — are all part of the itinerary.
So perhaps it’s no surprise Oceania Cruises now plans to pair its distinctive culinary considerations with an
immersive mixology program that really raises the bar.
The new spirits concept will feature a Moët and Chandon champagne experience, the latest cocktailcrafting trends including flavored smoke bubbles, savory zero-proof cocktails, wooden-barrel aged Negronis, and specialty beverage carts like the Bubbly Bar and Ultimate Bloody Mary Bar. These toast-worthy options will debut in May on Oceania Cruises’ newest ship, Vista , which also celebrates her inaugural season this spring.
As Oceania Cruises’ newest ship, Vista sets high standards for comfort and residential-style luxury with allveranda accommodations. Stunningly appointed bathrooms with oversized showers, vanities, and storage
space are a standard amenity, as are sumptuous furnishings, plush linens, tasteful artwork, and timeless décor.
AN INTOXICATING EXPERIENCE
On Vista , “having a drink” will be an experience unto itself, with skilled bartenders smoking an old fashioned at your table or meticulously grinding espresso beans by hand to make the perfect espresso martini. Naturally sourced ingredients, homemade syrups, and local garnishes can all be expected as well.
Experiential beverage offerings will include The Bubbly Bar, where passengers can order delightful champagne cocktails and The Ultimate Bloody Mary Bar, where guests can hand select their edible embellishments.
Additional immersive mixology experiences include:
THE CASINO MIXOLOGY BAR is laserfocused on the art of the cocktail, dedicated to both performance and palate. Expect Instagram-worthy tableside preparation along with a unique selection of bourbons and ryes for the readymade Negronis that flow from the wooden barrel they were aged in. A “flavor blaster” device tops cocktails with vapor filled bubbles and aromatic clouds.
MARTINIS is often the origin of an extraordinary evening; the bar’s sophisticated vibe and glamorous design are likely to leave passengers both shaken and stirred. Martini’s convivial gathering spaces are nestled among walls of shimmering glass while custom sculptural lighting casts a warm glow over patrons. The bar’s namesake cocktails are made with handcrafted and ethically sourced Mermaid gin and vodka.
BARISTAS has long been a favorite – if not a necessary – morning routine for passengers in need of a caffeine fix. This treasured coffee shop turned cocktail stop
will stay true to its Italian roots, offering passengers innovative cocktails made with Italian liqueurs and the country’s best-known mixers: Crodino, San Pellegrino, and Campari sodas. Don’t be surprised to hear a chorus of “Salute!” with each order.
PERFECTLY PAIRED
Passengers can blend their cocktail and culinary affairs by reserving exclusive pairing experiences designed to exquisitely complement the flavors, aromas, and tastes of both dish and drink. A soak in the natural healing hot springs is recommended during a stop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
Small Ships, Big Dreams
PONANT CRUISES HAS LONG BEEN REVERED AS A WORLD LEADER IN SMALL-SHIP CRUISING — a distinction that was recently validated by Cruise Critic, who named Ponant “Best in the Arctic” in its 2022 Editors’ Picks Awards. It’s not difficult to understand why Ponant is worthy of such recognition. After all, the company has roughly 20 years of experience in extreme regions and has completed more than 400 polar cruises. But there’s more than stats and numbers that make Ponant a true expedition specialist. The cruise line’s onboard experts, inspiring itineraries, and sumptuous amenities set Ponant poles apart from other Arctic operators.
Evoking an almost mythical sense of place, the Arctic is often dismissed as an isolated and iced-over tundra where only the hardiest survive. The common misconception being the far North is a place reserved for glaciologists and documentary film makers catapulting themselves toward unknown adventures. Yet on a Ponant Cruise, passengers can explore the vast remote in complete comfort — stunning suites offer panoramic views of calving glaciers, floating icebergs, and migrating humpbacks, while executive chefs prepare gourmet cuisine and butlers cater to every need.
In all, Ponant offers more than 60 Arctic cruises, each with jaw-dropping scenery and heart-pumping wildlife viewing — polar bears, Arctic foxes, walruses, orcas, and whales are all possible sightings. For an extra adrenaline rush, activities like polar snorkeling, snowshoeing, or kayaking are options. While the Arctic encompasses eight countries, including the US (thanks, Alaska), here are some of our top picks.
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND is the northernmost capital city in the world, famed for its nightlife, museums, and restaurants as much as its 64°08‘N latitude, just two degrees south of the Arctic Circle.
GREENLAND is home to the world’s largest national park: Northeast Greenland National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and a dreamlike alpine landscape where immense glaciers and astonishing icebergs lie beneath dark waters.
THE GEOGRAPHIC NORTH POLE is the northernmost point on the planet and getting there is no easy feat. With some expert maneuvering by the ship’s captain, the vessel will be positioned at exactly 90 degrees, signifying you’ve reached the holy grail of polar exploration.

If you prefer to dock in the heart of town — within walking distance of castles, vineyards, and villages — rather than disembark in an industrial port — river cruising is undoubtedly an ideal option. And
if timeless sophistication, exceptional service, and boutique shore excursions are more your style, all-inclusive Uniworld is tops. While the company journeys to spectacular destinations throughout Europe, Egypt, Asia, and Peru, some of its most popular itineraries include the following.
TIMELESS WONDERS OF VIETNAM, CAMBODIA & THE MEKONG
The journey begins in Vietnam’s largest city — Ho Chi Minh City — where modern
skyscrapers are juxtaposed against the backdrop of ancient temples. Throughout this 15-day itinerary, you’ll explore the Viet Cong’s vast network of narrow tunnels, paddle through slender canals on a traditional sampan, visit the untouched island of Tien Loi and colorful Siem Reap — the gateway to the UNESCO-designated jungle temple complex of Angkor Wat. The welcoming spirit of Cambodia is on display as friendly villagers excitedly greet passengers and local Buddhist monks offer a water blessing.
PORTUGAL, SPAIN & THE DOURO RIVER VALLEY
The magic of the Iberian Peninsula’s Douro River Valley has beckoned curious travelers for centuries. Spain and Portugal have influenced cuisine the world over, and this adventure provides a taste of their greatest contributions. In Porto, a customary flat-bottomed rabelo — just like those used to transport wine from vineyards hundreds of years ago — delivers you to the historic Ribeira district. Later, wind your way through the dramatic landscapes of the UNESCOdesignated Douro Valley. Beguiling architecture, zig-zag alleyways, opulent churches, and famous museums await.
SPLENDORS OF EGYPT AND THE NILE
Easily the most famous river in the world, cruising the Nile was once reserved for queens and pharaohs. After all, Cleopatra isn’t remembered for crossing the Pacific. The Temple of Luxor and a journey to 4,500-year-old Pyramids of Giza and neighboring Sphinx are some of the highlights. Extensions include a journey to Jerusalem where passengers can visit holy sites including the Pool of Bethesda, Temple Mount, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Stops at Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity are also planned.
INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE & THE SACRED GANGES
Circumnavigating the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Jaipur and Agra — this 13-day itinerary includes a stop at Mother Teresa’s tomb, the Rajbari Temples, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, and of course, the world’s grandest tribute to love, the Taj Mahal, which passengers can see at both sunrise and sunset. Other wonders of romance include a massive red sandstone marble tomb in Delhi and the Pink City of Jaipur, with its ornate royal palace that was painted in a dusty pink to welcome members of the British Royal Family.

National Geographic Orion is elegant without being stuffy, with ample outdoor space for taking in the beautiful surroundings. With 14 Zodiacs (one with a glass bottom), guests can land on most any island shore and can also experience the bountiful undersea life by way of snorkeling and SCUBA diving. COLORS OF INDONESIA: CORALS, KOMODOS, & VIBRANT CULTURES
Indonesia’s rich tapestry of cultures is on display with each exuberant welcome ceremony, a specialty of the country’s remote island villages. A stop at Komodo National Park brings a good chance to see the rare Komodo dragon. Spectacularly colorful reefs, isolated atolls, and ivory beaches await swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers at Kri Island, Raja Ampat, and West Papua.
ANCIENT POLYNESIA: TUAMOTU
MARQUESAS ISLANDS
Astonishing turquoise lagoons, dramatic volcanic peaks, and welcoming villagers are a few
&
certainties on this journey. Lucky divers might spot giant manta rays in the nutrient-rich waters of Rangiroa during a visit to the world’s largest marine sanctuary — a haven for dozens of threatened species of cetaceans, sharks, rays, sea turtles, and other marine life.
KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION:
AUSTRALIA’S WILD NORTHWEST
Spread across Australia’s northwest coast, the Kimberley plateau is an immense and complex landscape of plunging waterfalls, towering red rock, and emerald rainforests. Travelers can expect astonishing sites like Aboriginal rock art, otherworldly geological formations, and gravity-defying
horizontal waterfalls located deep within the Buccaneer Archipelago. Some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth can be witnessed at Montgomery Reef.
SOUTHERN ODYSSEY: NEW ZEALAND & THE SUBANTARCTIC ISLANDS
Untouched islands, rare wildlife, pristine beaches, quiet coves, soaring peaks, and dazzling fjords are just a few of the natural wonders found along on this journey. Birders will delight in the chance to view many of New Zealand’s nearly 300 bird species. Penguins and other pelagic birds can be found throughout the rarely visited Subantarctic Islands.

Fabulous French Polynesia
FAMILY FUN VIA PAUL GAUGIN CRUISES ’ MOANA EXPLORER PROGRAM
WITH ITS PRISTINE PALM-FRINGED BEACHES, CALM GEMSTONE-COLORED WATERS, AND SIGNATURE OVER-WATER BUNGALOWS , French Polynesia has long been regarded as the quintessential honeymoon destination for the privileged. Considering the island nation is as exclusive as it is exotic, as unspoiled as it is uncrowded, and as idyllic as it is iconic, it’s little wonder newlyweds consistently pursue the area’s beauty and romance.
But in recent years, Paul Gauguin Cruises — the highest-rated and longest continually sailing cruise company in the South Pacific — has decided to share the love by catering to families just as much as couples.
After the box-office success of Disney’s Moana, Paul Gauguin Cruises recognized kids were equally as enchanted with the culture, traditions, beauty, and wonder of French Polynesia as their parents. This led to the Moana Explorer Program, an interactive combination of naturalistled excursions, science experiments, art projects, games, and adventure.
MOANA EXPLORER PROGRAM
Curated for passengers ages 7-15, the Moana Explorer Program is far from the traditional camp-like structure found on most cruises. Instead, kids will enjoy visiting a sea turtle rehabilitation center and learning about conservation efforts. Some itineraries include a trip to a local village to learn about dolphins or stopping by the Ministry of Marine Reserve for a lesson on giant clams. Team-building experiences like “Survivor, Tahitian-style” are always a favorite — kids get to build a shelter made from materials they find on the beach and forage for fruits. Hiking volcanic mountains, snorkeling in the pristine lagoons, making jewelry with collected seashells, learning about local marine life, stargazing, conservation talks, swimming with sharks and stingrays, and designing their own Polynesian

tattoo (temporary of course) are also options.
While educational, the Moana Explorer Program focuses on experiential learning. Video games and interactive discussions help to prepare for and unpack daily lessons learned in nature. Before their trip is over, kids will know how to make shrimp using palm leaves and how to use binoculars to explore island geography and spot wildlife.
And the best part? Except for a few optional excursions, the Moana Explorer Program is entirely complimentary.
PENGUIN QUEST

icy home on the shores of the Weddell Sea. Other days are spent cruising around the Antarctic peninsula, taking in the snowy landscapes and deep blue sea while also spotting other Antarcticdwelling creatures in their chilly home — like seabirds swooping past the decks, and seals resting on floating slabs of ice.
Take Zodiac rides or kayak around towering icebergs, learn from expert scientists and biologists during lectures and other hands-on experiences, standup paddleboard along icy shorelines, improve photography skills with the resident photography guide, or opt for pampering treatments at the onboard spa during your days at sea. HELLO, Explora Journeys!
MEET A NEW CRUISE GAME CHANGER BY AMY
ROBERTSIN THE WORLD OF CRUISING, THERE’S A GOOD DEAL OF FANFARE SURROUNDING A SHIP’S MAIDEN VOYAGE — ANTICIPATORY EXCITEMENT, CHAMPAGNE TOASTS, A CEREMONIAL RIBBON CUTTING. But when a company launches both a new cruise line and vessel, well that’s a distinct level of special that only a privileged few are privy to.
This July, an elite group of people will be able to say, “I set sail on Explora Journeys’ inaugural ocean experience.”
The new cruise line set to debut this summer has ambitious plans to shift industry expectations. For starters, all cabins on EXPLORA I , the first ship in the Explora Journeys fleet, will feature a “Homes at Sea” atmosphere, boasting a minimum of 377 square feet of living space, with some suites offering more than 3,000 spacious square feet.
Regardless of suite selection – Ocean Suites, Ocean Penthouses or Ocean Residences — all guests will enjoy walk-in wardrobes, seated vanity areas, private terraces, sweeping ocean views, and an unrivaled roominess cloaked in European elegance. Heated bathroom floors, a customized minibar stocked to taste, espresso machine, personal binoculars, and wireless bed-side charging stations are additional touches conveying a sense of home and belonging.
Designed in partnership with the world’s foremost superyacht specialists and harnessing cutting-edge maritime technology, EXPLORA I will offer 27,000 square feet of outdoor space, three swimming pools, dozens of private cabanas, an indoor pool with a retractable roof, and an exceptionally large and
poshly equipped spa and fitness studio, which is also where passengers will experience Explora Journeys’ signature Ocean Wellness program. Designed to optimize whole-body healing and centered around complete restoration, tailormade programs include energy flow classes to replenish stamina and strength, sleep programs to realign your body’s circadian rhythm, and immune-boosting experiences to promote health and reduce anxiety. Plus, all are enhanced by the revitalizing influence of the sea.
OCEAN CONNECTION AND CONSERVATION
While Explora Journeys might be a new name in the cruise industry, it’s hardly a naval novice. Explora Journeys is a descendent of MSC Group, but that’s just one proverbial drop in the ocean. In fact, founder and owner Gianluigi Aponte can trace his seafaring ancestry back to the 17th century in
Sorrento, Italy, where generations of Apontes ferried goods between Naples and Castellammare di Stabia.
True to the family business, Gianluigi Aponte began his maritime career as a ferry captain. After becoming smitten with a Swiss passenger who he later married, Aponte and his bride created the global shipping operation MSC Group, and later MSC Cruises, the largest privately-owned cruise line in the world. Now, the family synonymous with ocean travel and transport has launched Explora Journeys.
Given the family’s 300-plus years of livelihood by sea, it’s little wonder they’re as committed to ocean conservation as they are to exploration. That’s why each Explora Journeys ship will be RINA dolphin
certified, reducing underwater noise to protect marine animals. Other sea safeguards include no singleuse plastic on board or ashore, high-efficiency and energy saving appliances, a state-of-the-art recycling and waste management program, and selective catalytic reduction technology.
ALL ASHORE
Explora Journeys is poised to transform ocean travel through a synergy of the chicest ships and the most immersive itineraries. Explora Journey’s collection of Destination Experiences will provide inspiring opportunities for guests to discover authentic cultural, historical, and culinary delights from
an extraordinary perspective, all while offering an impressive guest-tohost ratio allowing travelers to fully connect with each destination.
Itineraries range from seven to 44 nights, with the inaugural journeys covering Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, the US and Canada, Caribbean, South America, Hawaii, and Alaska.

Seabourn Venture and sister ship Seabourn Pursuit combine the brand’s signature service and luxe touches with adventure-ready design and technology. Built to PC6 Polar Class standards, the vessels can venture to the far reaches of some of the most remote places on the planet, like Arctic Canada and Antarctica, while still delivering five-star amenities.
Famed designer Adam D. Tihany is responsible for the artful details and custom furnishings found
in the 132 all-veranda, all ocean-front suites as well as in the common areas, which include the sky-lit Atrium and stylish Expedition Lounge. Offship experiences allow guests to follow the call of adventure thanks to a fleet of double sea kayaks and Zodiacs. The ships’ standout toys — two custombuilt submarines — provide an unbelievable view of the mysteries that lie deep below the ocean’s surface. Footage will be shared on high-definition screens in the Expedition Lounge. Each day, guests will gather in this teaching and academic center to get briefed by scientists, wilderness experts, naturalists, and other members of the ship’s 26-person expedition team.
Itineraries explore distinct, far-flung locales including the Northwest Passage, the Amazon, East Greenland, the Falkland Islands, and South Georgia. And you won’t just visit these places, you’ll be deeply immersed in them. In the Amazon, kayak over seasonally flooded forests, where you’ll spot sloths, howler monkeys, and colorful birds. Cruise in a Zodiac to see river life on a caboclo buffalo farm. The Arctic offers an unparalleled safari experience, with opportunities to see polar bears, ivory gulls, and the elusive narwhal. This spring and summer, Seabourn Pursuit will explore the waters and landscapes of Greenland, Iceland,
and Norway, retracing the path of the Vikings to the frontier town of Tromsø while carving its way through the inside passage of the Norwegian fjords along the way.
Active travelers will relish the wide range of expedition activities. The ships’ expert guides lead walks and hikes that provide insights into the history and ecology of destinations, while kayak and Zodiac outings get travelers up close with nature. In warm water destinations you can snorkel and learn to scuba dive.
If you prefer to stay dry, you can still observe the wonders beneath the sea aboard a custom, state-of-theart submarine. Each environmentally
friendly, battery-powered sub carries just seven people — six guests, three each in two clear acrylic spheres — plus the pilot guiding the journey. Dive to depths of nearly 1,000 feet and come face-to-face with neon-hued fish, curious seals, and other ocean marvels. Keeping with the ultra-luxury experience found on Seabourn, subs are outfitted with custom-embroidered leather upholstery, a Bluetooth stereo system, air conditioning, and a champagne chiller so you can toast your extraordinary journey. You’ll never think of cruising the same again.

complimentary. The 2024-2025 Voyage Collection is full of both far-flung and beloved locales as well as new tours that allow travelers to engage and explore with a destination like never before. Here are some not-to-miss highlights.
BE AN ECO-MINDED TRAVELER
We all know we need to do our part to leave the world a better place. And nothing inspires change like a first-hand experience or personal connection. Regent’s new Eco-Connect Tours do exactly that. More than 150 unique experiences provide enriching
opportunities to learn about the conservation efforts of local communities around the globe. Visit a sloth sanctuary in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and learn how deforestation is threatening these animals’ habitat, or go deeper than swirling and sniffing in Bordeaux, France, and discover how biodynamic and organic farming is elevating wines produced at Château de La Dauphine.
OBSESS OVER ARCHITECTURE
Some travelers want to do more than ogle brilliantly designed buildings. They’re curious about the inspiration, materials, and process. Regent’s new Behind the Design Tours celebrate architectural achievements by delving into the history of some of Europe’s most marvelous buildings such as the Munchmuseet in Oslo, Norway, and Barcelona’s Toree Glòries. An architectural historian will share the challenges of building two avant-garde landmarks, the La Villa Mediterranée & Mucem, in Marseille, France. And in Copenhagen, a design mecca, you’ll get an insider’s look at two radical, modernist buildings: Royal Library and Blue Planet.
THINK LIKE A LOCAL
You don’t truly know a destination until you see it through a local lens. Regent’s Go Local Tours connect you directly with local
communities so you can go beyond the famous attractions and experience everyday life. Spend a day at a family-owned goat farm in the countryside of Andalusia to learn the generations-old way of making cheese, observe skilled local artists in their personal studios on Palma de Mallorca, or watch villagers in Dubrovnik demonstrate how flour was made centuries ago in a water-powered mill and how bread was traditionally baked in an iron dome.
DISCOVER LOCAL FLAVORS
Food is a universal language. Whether it’s a home-cooked meal or a Michelin-star restaurant, culinary experiences have the power to capture the history, culture, and flavor of a destination. Regent’s Gourmet Explorer Tours take food lovers to local spice markets, street food stalls, boutique vineyards, and into the kitchen for hands-on lessons. In Provence, Michelin-decorated Chef Rene Berard hosts guests at his property for a cooking demonstration and lunch. Additionally, in Valencia, guests learn the nuances of paella, and in Sicily a pastry master will teach guests how to make cannoli.
BE WELL
Regent has always promoted wellbeing on its ships with complimentary fitness classes and nutritious cuisine. But its Wellness Tours weave physical activity and mindfulness into excursions, making it fun and easy to maintain your healthy routine on vacation. Practice yoga on the beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife or on a terrace overlooking the sea in Taormina. Learn about apitherapy, a school of alternative medicine based on bee products. Or experience the healing benefits of the thermal springs where popes once soaked while visiting the ancient city of Viterbo just outside Rome.

Evolution of Elegance
STEP ABOARD SILVERSEA’S SILVER ORIGIN BY AMY ROBERTS
ALMOST TWO CENTURIES HAVE PASSED SINCE THE BRITISH NATURALIST CHARLES DARWIN VISITED THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS and observed wildlife behaviors that informed his theory of evolution — a notion that changed both modern science and humanity. Today, visitors can still witness real-time evolution as volcanoes continue to erupt and lava flows form new islands within this UNESCO World Heritage archipelago. Those volcanoes are largely responsible for the uniqueness of the Galápagos, creating rock formations that provide shelter to some 9,000 animals and plant life, including the area’s unofficial mascot — the blue-footed booby. This endearing bird is one of the dozens of charismatic and indigenous animals guests will delight in seeing during a cruise aboard Silversea’s first destination specific ship — Silver Origin .
NATURE
Boasting the highest Zodiac-to-guest ratio in the archipelago allows Silver Origin guests to enjoy more time exploring what is often referred to as “a living museum.” A team of naturalist guides — all Ecuadorian nationals — accompany guests ashore and lead informative nature walks to identify flora and fauna and explain the symbiotic relationships between organisms and their environment. There’s no better way to explore the remarkable ecosystems, which boast an astonishing number of endemic species, including the Galápagos giant tortoise, Galápagos sea lion, Frigatebirds, Flightless Cormorants, marine iguanas, and, of course, the symbolic bluefooted booby.
NURTURE
The learning continues on board as a team of 10 naturalists, each certified by the Galápagos National Park, ensure an enriching, engaging, and educational voyage. These handpicked experts are all permanent residents of the islands, providing a unique perspective to help guests connect with the pristine natural environment. While real-world exploration is the focus, advanced lectures, slideshows, and personal discussions are hosted in the ship’s Explorer Lounge. Meanwhile, Basecamp is an interactive and innovative “knowledge lounge.” Here, guests will find an endless supply of books, learning materials, and equipment to provide a deeper understanding of the exceptional ecosystem around them.
NAUTICAL
Snorkeling and kayaking opportunities are plentiful too, with sea turtles, manta rays, white-tipped reef sharks, sea lions, and tropical fish all likely to make an appearance. Lucky snorkelers might spot Galápagos Penguins, dolphins, hammerhead sharks, humpback whales, or the native marine iguana — found nowhere else on earth. Even better, all equipment is included, so there’s no need to cram gear into your suitcase or pack a wetsuit.
ELEGANCE AT SEA
Just because the Galápagos Islands are unspoiled doesn’t mean you’ll be. Silversea’s Silver Origin offers every luxury imaginable, including 50 all-suite accommodations, private balconies, personalized butler service, indulgent interiors, premium bed linens, and large floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the ship that usher in sweeping views of nature’s majesty. Amenities like a fitness area and pampering spa services are an
unexpected bonus. But the real jewel is an observation deck and stargazing platform that provide an elevated option for simultaneous views of the Southern Cross and North Star in the night sky.
ENVIRONMENT AT SEA
Touted by Silversea as “the most environmentally conscious ship we have ever built,” Silver Origin was designed with the destination and environment in mind. The ship features a dynamic positioning system crafted specifically to Galápagos Adventure. Enter
protect the delicate seabed and limit impact on wildlife. Guests are gifted a metallic reusable water bottle upon arrival to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles. These can be filled in the reverse osmosis fresh-water purification systems located in each suite and throughout the ship. Exterior lighting is also dimmed to avoid disturbing animals after dark. There’s also the Silversea Fund for the Galápagos, a fund created by Silversea and dedicated to safeguarding the archipelago for future generations to enjoy.

Japanese culture is one of the most influential in the world, largely because of how fascinating and everchanging it is. Traditional customs peacefully coexist with modern life. Visitors can interact with the country’s Living National Treasures — artists and craftsman who have dedicated their lives to mastering a technique. Don a kimono as you learn from skilled woodworkers who use over 200 different chisels and knives in their carvings, sit on the sidelines and watch the giants of Japanese martial culture practice Sumo wrestling, or enjoy traditional maiko dance performances in a historical teahouse.
CONTEMPORARY + COMFORT
Whether you prefer views of towering skyscrapers or Mt Fuji rising from the mist, Japan offers sumptuous accommodations catering to all definitions of an Instagram-worthy vista. Africa for All
TAKE A MULTI-GENERATIONAL TRIP WITH AFRICAN TRAVEL, INC
ASK ANY TRAVELER WHAT TOPS THEIR BUCKET LIST, AND MOST WILL SAY, “A SAFARI IN AFRICA,” then go on to explain the reasons they haven’t taken one yet: Their kids aren’t old enough; they can’t decide where to go; or, they don’t know where to begin.
Fortunately, African Travel, Inc. — the longest established luxury safari operator in the U.S. focused exclusively on the African continent — has a retort for all these rationalizations.
The company offers a variety of safaris that cater to families and bestow a deep sense of connection to the natural world, and to each other. In fact, African Travel is known for specializing in multi-generational trips, tailored to each member of the family – from kids to octogenarians. Perhaps that’s why the company has been named Travel + Leisure’s “#1 World’s Best Safari Outfitter” and received the Departures “Legend Award.”
While the company covers almost the entire continent, these itineraries are the most popular for multi-generational family trips.
SOUTH AFRICA’S NATURAL WONDERS
Over the course of 10 days, families can explore Cape Town — a melting pot of biodiversity and culture. From there, it’s off to the southern tip of the country for a stay at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve where you’ll board an eco-boat cruise in search of South Africa’s Marine Big Five: Southern right whales, great white sharks, bottlenose dolphins, Cape fur seals, and African penguins. The final days of the trip are spent at the world-famous Shamwari Game Reserve, one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa, and home to the coveted Big Five.
WORLD’S GREATEST SHOW
Capturing the wonders of Kenya and Tanzania, guests will follow the most likely route for observing the Great Migration — an annual event where millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River — rare predators following in their tracks. The Ngorongoro Crater, views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, and the famous largetusked elephants of Amboseli are all easily viewed given the included bush flights between luxury camps. This safari itinerary is also an investment in East Africa’s future wildlife leaders. A donation is made to support a local child’s participation in the Land & Life Foundation Wildlife Warrior program.

NorthArgentina: & South
Editor at Large IGNACIO MAZA discovers the essence of this vibrant country, including the birthplace of tango, spectacular landscapes, the heritage of indigenous civilizations, colonial settlements, and a cosmopolitan metropolis.
EXPLORING ARGENTINA IS LIKE DISCOVERING MANY COUNTRIES IN ONE. You’ll find tropical jungles and wetlands in the northeast, dry valleys and high mountain peaks in the Andean region to the west, fertile plains in the central Pampas, and vast Patagonian steppes reaching towards Antarctica. As the eighth largest country in the world, Argentina is enormous — roughly the size of India! Due to the long distances between regions and limited time, I visited two locales I’d yet to experience: the Northwest and Patagonia. I also couldn’t help myself and added on a few days in Buenos Aires, the country’s capital. Here are my top takeaways to a country that already has me yearning for a return trip.
RAFFISH LA BOCA put BUENOS AIRES on the map, considered the first city port and the BIRTHPLACE OF TANGO.
BUENOS A IRES
LATIN AMERICA’S HEART OF CULTURAL PURSUITS
Most trips to Argentina begin and end in Buenos Aires. This sprawling metropolis located at the mouth of the River Plate is where 15 million-plus inhabitants (roughly one out of every three Argentines) reside. The most European of all South American capitals, Buenos Aires is sophisticated and always in motion. The city combines the architecture of Paris and Madrid with an irrepressible Latin American spirit. You’ll experience nonstop traffic, late hours, decadent dining, festive nightlife, and worldclass arts and culture.
Buenos Aires is also a collection of distinct neighborhoods. The most notable include the stately Centro, a historic district on the edge of the river where you will find the Cabildo, an 18 th-century town hall, Casa Rosada (Argentina’s Presidential Palace), and Plaza de Mayo, where Argentines protest and celebrate special occasions. Raffish La Boca put Buenos Aires on the map, considered the first city port and the birthplace of tango. Walk down colorful El Caminito and admire the street art. Explore the charming cobblestone streets of San Telmo in search of
antiques and the perfect empanada, a pastry filled with meat and savory ingredients. Don’t miss La Recoleta, the elegant neighborhood of Argentina’s elite, where you’ll find opulent palaces, chic apartment buildings, and enticing shopping and dining. Visit the namesake cemetery, the burial place of Argentina’s wealthy and powerful, including Eva Perón. Continue to Palermo and stroll the parks, and then wander through its trendy Soho and Hollywood subdivisions lined with hip restaurants, bars, and stylish shops. While in Palermo, visit the Eva Perón Museum for a survey of her life and legacy. Whether you are for or against peronismo , learning about the history of Juan Domingo Perón and his famous wife is essential to understand today’s Argentina. For something completely different, visit the city’s newest neighborhood, Puerto Madero, home of high-rise residential and office buildings, renovated grain warehouses, and top city restaurants.
Buenos Aires is proud of its rich cultural heritage, vibrant theater district, and one of the world’s finest opera houses, Teatro Colón. Although the capital has hundreds of bookstores, the most beautiful is El Ateneo Grand Splendid, an ornate theater turned

into a book lover’s temple. And for the culinary traveler, the capital is celebrated for its diverse and high-quality dining, particularly the abundant grass-fed beef, considered by many the finest on the globe.
THE NORTHWEST
COLORFUL PANORAMAS AND THE LIVING LEGACY OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS
From Buenos Aires, I flew to Salta, the premier gateway to Argentina’s noroeste . Here you’ll find stunning landscapes, snow-covered mountains, colonial towns, spectacular deserts, and rock formations, and above all, the living heritage of ancient indigenous civilizations. Salta’s spirit is tied to the altiplano of Bolivia and Perú, not distant Buenos Aires. The ideal way to experience the northwest is with an expert guide who knows the secrets of this hardscrabble land and a driver who can navigate the often unpaved and narrow roads.
The sights in this region are of top note. In the Quebrada de las Conchas, wander inside a 60-foot sandstone amphitheater carved by wind and water and featuring perfect
acoustics. Hike rocky paths covered by forests of giant cactus ( cardones ) in the highlands of Cachi or explore the otherworldly landscapes of Angastaco Nature Reserve. Sample some of the finest wines in Argentina, especially Malbecs and Torrontés whites in Cafayate’s vineyards. Ride the “Train to the Clouds,” one of the highest in the world, with sections reaching 14,200 feet above sea level. An engineering feat, this famous railway can be experienced in one day.
Travel north to Jujuy province to see natural wonders like the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This northsouth valley — a key commercial link during the Spanish colonial period — is known for charming towns and emblematic vistas. Another highlight? The Serranía del Hornocal, best seen in the afternoon. Layers of eroded limestone and exposed minerals have created chromatic mountainsides and the multicolored rocks are the result of being exposed to the elements over millennia. Another must: Salinas Grandes. The enormous salt flat extends as far as the horizon and is the remains of an ancient lake (now dry). Best of all? The enchanting villages of Molinos, Cachi, and Uquía. These settlements, some dating back to the 16th Century, are frozen in time and offer a window into the area’s rich and storied past. Spend time in Salta, a pleasant city of colonial architecture featuring grand churches painted red and pink, a café-lined central plaza, and the Museum of High Altitude (MAAM), where you’ll find perfectly preserved Inca mummies.
PATAGONIA WILD, UNTRAMMELED, AND BREATHTAKING
This remote region of endless landscapes, windswept plains, and towering mountains has enchanted travelers of all stripes, including Magellan, Butch Cassidy, and Charles Darwin. The top highlight in Patagonia is Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, home to jagged peaks, awe-inspiring scenery, and world-class hiking trails. This National Park has two focal points: The northern town of El Chaltén (the trekking capital of South America), and the southern El Calafate, the gateway to the region and main airport.
Stay at the newly opened Explora Lodge near El Chaltén, the ultimate basecamp to explore the northern region. The lodge is located within the conservation reserve of Los Huemules and frames fantastic views of the Electric Valley and Marconi Glacier. Of the many hikes offered by Explora, the most sought-after is the trek to Laguna de Los Tres for the best views of Mount Fitz Roy, Argentina’s Matterhorn. This challenging, 15mile hike will demand every ounce of energy but is well worth the effort. The day I hiked this trail we had good weather, so I was able to see splendid Mount Fitz Roy from the edge of the lagoon, which was still frozen in Patagonia’s early spring. The sense of accomplishment and
rush of emotions felt when reaching Laguna de Los Tres is unforgettable. At the south end of the park is the star attraction: Perito Moreno Glacier, an arm of the Patagonian Icefield. This notable glacier is easily accessed and is constantly advancing, causing massive chunks of ice calving from its front walls. There are many ways to experience the wonder and grandeur of Perito Moreno Glacier: trekking across the ice, cruising or kayaking on the glacial lake, or walking down elevated boardwalks for great views of massive ice formations over three miles wide. Halfway between El Calafate and the glacier is EOLO, the intimate Relais & Chateaux Lodge embodying the spirit of Patagonia and the best place to stay in this area. This serene and warmhearted lodge, set on a hill within a vast estate, was the perfect place to end my journey.
On the last night before flying home, I searched the night sky until I found the Southern Cross (always a good sign!). My trip to Argentina had come to an end, and my wish for a great adventure had come true.

BEAR ESSENTIALS
Journeying through Canada and Alaska with Natural Habitat Adventures, AMY ROBERTS discovers an elevated approach to sustainable travel.
SSUSTAINABLE TRAVEL, ECOTOURISM, ENVIRONMENTAL VACATIONS — BUZZY TERMS
LIKE THESE, ONCE CONSIDERED PROGRESSIVE AND COMMENDABLE — CAN SOMETIMES BECOME OVERLY EMPLOYED. Yet Natural Habitat Adventures, the world’s first carbon-neutral tour company and the first travel outfitter to pull off a zero-waste trip , is proving to the industry it can be done. The company is hyper focused on doing good versus pontificating about it.
Perhaps this is to be expected of a company that partners with World Wildlife Fund (WWF). You can’t really place the leading environmental organization’s iconic panda logo next to yours if you aren’t able to justify the association. Even so, Nat Hab, as it’s often referred to by travelers, seems to be on a continual quest to one-up itself environmentally.
How so? For starters, the company pays to offset 100 percent of the carbon emissions from each trip by funding carbon reduction programs all
over the world. Investing in renewable energy sources in India, protecting forests in Zimbabwe, and purchasing efficient cook stoves for villagers in Rwanda are just a few examples. While admirable, Nat Hab readily admits carbon neutrality is the floor, not the ceiling, and community impact must be part of the foundation.
This became obvious to me on two recent trips I had the pleasure of experiencing: one to the company’s newest offering, brown bear viewing in Alaska’s remote Lake Clark National Park, and another to its longest running adventure, a polar bear safari in Churchill, Canada.
ALASKA The Experience
Accessible only by air or by sea, no roads lead to Lake Clark National Park. There’s also no electricity, cell service, or Wi-Fi. But, if you’re doing it right, none of those things are missed. The antics of the area’s brown bears, the “pinch me, this can’t be real” scenery, and the engaging dialogue with guides provide more entertainment, inspiration, and education than any website or Netflix special.
NATURAL HABITAT ADVENTURES READILY ADMITS CARBON NEUTRALITY IS THE FLOOR, NOT THE CEILING, AND COMMUNITY IMPACT MUST BE PART OF THE FOUNDATION.From left: Natural Habitat Adventure’s Bear Camp in Alaska; daily wildlife viewing all but ensures excitement; the company takes guests bear viewing in Alaska’s Lake Clark Natural Park.
The trip begins in Homer, Alaska, where seven passengers board a small bush plane (the kind where you’re assigned a seat based on your weight and can expect to get intimately familiar with the tops of your kneecaps), for a 45-minute scenic flight across the Cook Inlet. Before landing on the beach in front of Nat Hab’s Bear Camp, our pilot had to overshoot the landing and circle back. “We don’t want to disturb that mom and her cubs,” we heard him explain in our headsets. Soon enough, mama bear’s stroll along the beach came to an end, allowing us to land and meet up with the seven other humans we’d be spending the next few days with.
Located within Lake Clark National Park, Bear Camp encompasses a handful of private ocean-front acres on the Alaskan coastline. Nat Hab acquired the land less than one year ago and committed to ensuring an intimate bear-viewing experience in nature’s uninhabited — and largely uninhabitable — wild.
Tented cabins offer a cozy escape from the elements when needed, but given the nearly 18 hours of daylight during an Alaskan summer, a lot of time is spent bear viewing on the elevated platforms and observation decks, and walking through meadows and forests seemingly straight from a children’s novel that begins with, “Once upon a time …”
The Impact
The bush camp is 100 percent off the grid; a solar powered, rainwater collecting, composting, enclave that manages to feel more luxury than hippie — a proverbial pristine paradise that almost wasn’t.
Several years ago, a Canadian company called Northern Dynasty Minerals proposed the Pebble Mine project — a gold and copper mine that would destroy crucial denning areas and poison the salmon runs of Bristol Bay — which would decimate the area’s bear population.
Plans for Pebble Mine included an open pit mine roughly six football fields deep and covering more than a square mile. A 270-megawatt power plant, 165-mile natural-gas pipeline, and 82 miles of road were also intended. Toxic mine tailings were to be dumped in nearby ponds.
It’s hard to believe this proposal was ever probable. Fortunately, for now, plans are halted, in large part due to the activism of Nat Hab guides and WWF, both of which played a major role in stopping the mine. Together, they continue to monitor the threat and work with local native communities and administrations to protect the ecosystem.
ON OUR FIRST DAY IN THE TUNDRA OUR GROUP GOT LUCKY WITH TWO CURIOUS BEARS, ONE OF WHICH STOOD ON ITS HIND LEGS AND STRETCHED CLOSE TO NINE FEET TALL.From left: “Polar Rovers” keep guests safe yet close to the action; navigating Natural Habitat’s Bear Camp; daily photography is a must.
CANADA The Experience
It can be difficult to watch a polar bear roll around on its back in Canada’s sub-arctic tundra, struggling to sit upright and think anything but, “Awwww.”
When I witnessed a pudgy white bear doing this, paws flailing about, I couldn’t help but suggest he was auditioning for a Coca Cola commercial. But when that same bear silently covered 100 yards in less than ten seconds to approach our Polar Rover, I changed my mind. Sure, he was still adorable. But his paws were the size of snowshoes and when he yawned, I was certain a bowling ball could fit in his mouth. Observations that reminded me cuteness is not a disqualifier for being a lethal hunter.
On our first day in the tundra our group got lucky with two curious bears, one of which stood on its hind legs and stretched close to nine feet tall to get a better look at the people safely perched atop the vehicle. When the bear walked underneath our Polar Rover and stood to sniff the bottom of my boots through the grated steel-mesh floor, I silently prayed I hadn’t stepped in seal blubber.
As one of only two companies to hold an exclusive
permit allowing access to the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, Nat Hab can safely provide these unforgettable encounters with one of the world’s top apex predators. And while polar bears are certainly the main attraction, the tundra is home to several other species uniquely adapted for the severe environment, including arctic fox, snowy owls, and willow ptarmigans who comically appear to be strutting down a catwalk, showing off the latest in footwear fashion.
The Impact
Polar bears are the poster child for climate change, so it’s little wonder Nat Hab’s initiatives are focused on protecting the bears and their environment, which includes the small town of Churchill. Neighboring the Hudson Bay, Churchill is home to roughly 900 humans. At times, the lines between town and tundra are blurred, and it’s not uncommon for bears to wonder into the city limits. “It’s the only place in the world where if a stranger speeds towards you and opens the car door and yells, ‘get in!’ you do it,” Nat Hab’s Director of Travel Industry Relations, Don Martinson, told our group.
When bears roam too close to town, conservation officers try to scare them off with loud noises, flares, and if needed, rubber bullets. If those measures fail, bears are trapped, consciously sedated, and sentenced to a few weeks in what is colloquially referred to as “polar bear jail,” where they’re given nothing but a block of ice for the duration of their stay. It might sound harsh, but the goal is to ensure the polar bear equivalent of a one-star Yelp review.
“We don’t want them associating humans with food,” explained our guide, Garrett Fache. “We want the experience to be harmlessly unpleasant.”
When their stint is up, bears are again consciously sedated and flown about 50 miles away in a net that dangles from a helicopter. This prison reform program is successful, but pricey. Between pilot time, helicopter rental, fuel, and other expenses, each release can cost upwards of $3,000 — a tab regularly picked up by Nat Hab.
These ongoing efforts make it clear; Nat Hab isn’t your average sustainability-driven company. Equally of note, its “playground” is even more reason to return, be it for the alpenglow, unexpected bear encounters, or the truly transformative nature of travel.
Opposite: New life, up close and personal; Above: Alaska’s preferred mode of transport.

A COUNTRY OF CULTURE
Immerse yourself in the stories and culture of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples.
THE SMOKE FROM THE BONFIRE WISPS THROUGH THE AIR INSIDE THE TRADITIONAL TEEPEE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA. Around it, guests sip hot chocolate and take turns reaching for the tray of warm Bannock and local berry jam. In Saskatchewan, guests in a river canoe are enthralled with the voice of an Indigenous storyteller; lulled by the pull every time the paddle sweeps through crystal-clear water. In Quebec, a drumbeat helps tell the story of the Indigenous Nations who first called the area home. Each thump is like a heartbeat connecting travelers to both the past and future of the people.
The spirit of Indigenous Peoples in Canada runs as deep as the rock and as wide as the waters. And for travelers hoping to find authentic connections to the people whose ancestors were here long before there were flags to wave and anthems to stand behind, Indigenous hotels offer the perfect perch from which to explore.
These five Indigenousled tourism initiatives offer respectful, mindful connections to the land, the culture, and the people, and all will stick with you long after you leave.

SPIRIT BEAR LODGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The distinctive white fur of the elusive Spirit Bear has long been a draw for travelers seeking the largest coastal temperate rainforest on earth, located in one of the most remote places in the country. But visitors will tell you: The bears are only the beginning of the magic here. This lodge, set in the Great Bear Rainforest, offers a transformative experience that brings you closer to all kinds of wildlife, culture, and biodiversity. Architecturally designed to resemble the traditional long houses built for thousands of years by west coast First Nations, rooms are warm and welcoming. With only 12 ocean view rooms, experiences are intimate and exclusive and multi-day adventures offer small groups ample opportunity for authentic connection. Best of all, stays here directly support research and conservation efforts in the Kitasoo/ Xai’xais territory. The Galápagos Islands, with BITINIA ESPINOZA, Cruise Director on Celebrity Flora.
GROWING UP IN THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS, WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES?
It was truly amazing! I enjoyed playing outside with friends, swimming, hiking, fishing with my father, and watching whales and dolphins during our navigations.
AS A LOCAL OF SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, WHAT ARE SOME SITES YOU RECOMMEND SEEING IN ADDITION TO THE CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION?
Santa Cruz is surrounded by beautiful places such us Tortuga Bay, El Garrapatero Beach, Divine´s Bay, Playa de los Perros, Las Grietas, and The Giant Tortoises Reserve. Los Gemelos is a forest in the Highland which is being restored thanks to Celebrity Flora and her guests.
IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE TIP ON TAKING THE BEST WILDLIFE PHOTOS IN THE GALÁPAGOS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
First, you have to respect the wildlife, be patient, and wait for the animals to become used to your presence (which is not difficult in the Galápagos). You’ll want the right gear: A telephoto lens is a must for wildlife photography, but you should never forget a wide-angle lens to capture the essence of the habitats and the beautiful landscapes of the islands.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR EXPERIENCE THAT ALWAYS SURPRISES OR AMAZES TRAVELERS?
The innocence of a sea lion pup, or a small bird flying into a camera lens to watch from the other side. Flocks of birds will plunge-dive in front of a boat, plus birds will do their courtship dances in front of a group of visitors—showing no fear at all.
WHAT LESSONS DO YOU HOPE GUESTS WILL LEARN FROM THEIR TIME ON THE ISLANDS?
To live in peace and coexist with nature. There is always a good way to protect our own planet and a way to repair it for the future generations. Our guests on board Celebrity Flora have the unique opportunity to help park rangers plant trees. The most important is if we all do it together, we can make a tremendous difference in the world. We have taken over 23,000 guests and planted more than 50,000 trees!
