the project
The Curio House attempts to address many 21st century questions. The Interiors team chose to focus on simply one:
Do we simplify our lifestyle and thereby use, buy, or do less? Or, can design facilitate flexibility allowing us to do more with less?
Early in the design process, the Architectural design team developed the Curio House to be an unencumbered environment with several spans of glass connecting users to the site. The challenge for the Interiors team was to address
contemporary and practical notions of program such as privacy, intimacy, and differentiated uses of space within the limits of the shell. How do we make living, dining, and sleeping spaces comfortably overlap? Our response is an adaptable living wall that allows people to define space through use.
the process
The Interiors team was engaged in the project professionally with the Architectural team enacting the client. It was led by a Project Architect who established criteria, provided timely feedback, and gave approvals.
Our process relied on the use of physical modeling as a means of understanding scale, finding problems, and discovering opportunities. We literally played “House” throughout the process using narratives based on various end users to determine how needs could be met.
the concept
The living wall allows users to rotate it and create living, sleeping, or playing arrangements. Pull-out cubes afford several user defined functions. Each cube can be oriented to allow users to play with the look of the wall. Some faces are painted, others have pictures or games, and all come with one opened face and one upholstered face for seating purposes. Each can function as a storage bin, a chair, an ottoman, or a building block.
