Survey on Taiwanese People's Attitudes towards Climate Change and Energy
1
Abstract Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) published 2018 Survey on Taiwanese People’s Attitudes towards Climate Change and Energy, and the results showed 86% of Taiwanese support to develop renewable energy. The poll has been run by TAISE every year since 2011, and this year the survey asked a sample of 1,102 people taken from around the country with series of questions on climate change and energy. It found that 79.6 percent were concerned about climate change, a 6.4 percent increased on the last year record. Over half of people have discussed the issue with others, and also 58 percent thought that climate change has caused an impact on Taiwan. 64.3 percent knew that the government is currently promoting energy transformation policies. The public is aware that Taiwan is facing the challenge of climate change. The Paris Agreement stated that the rise of global temperature should be kept well below 2℃ above pre-industrial levels. However, only 9 percent of Taiwanese could correctly answer the number. 63.7 percent thought that Taiwan might be subject to international pressure due to inadequate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and 73.2 percent thought that the performance of carbon emission reduction efficacy in Taiwan is bad.
Survey on Taiwanese People's Attitudes towards Climate Change and Energy
86 percent were positive to support the development of renewable energy, and to reduce environmental pollution was the main reason (69.5 percent). In the energy plan, Taiwan government plans to use gas as 50 percent of electricity generation method, and the renewables will be 20 percent. Nevertheless, only 6.6 percent answered correctly that gas will be the major method instead of renewables.
