are Possible In life people often limit themselves or allow others to tell them what it is they can and cannot do, as well as how far they can go. This is why a lot of people live mediocre lives even when they have potential to become so much more.

Auzweke recently spoke to a young woman whose life is the direct opposite of mediocre. The 25 year old Thato Mocumi has achieved things that a lot of people her age can only dream of. She is evidence that anything is possible and that it depends on one’s will and drive to pursue their dreams. She is a radio DJ, an MC, singer, PR graduate and actress. Ms Mocumi lets us in on her life and how she got to where she is. She grew up in Soweto, lived with her parents and younger sister; she lost her father in 2007. Thato describes herself as fun, exciting and a creative. “I love music, food and laughing; laughter is the best medicine.” She said. When we asked her why she chose the media/music industry, this is what she had to say. “honestly, I think it chose me, besides the fact that I love music, I never thought I was good at it at all, I just loved being around my musician friends and creating nice things but I never really thought I would be in it like I am now.” Ms Mocumi is an obvious lover of music and through it she makes people feel good. “I call myself

a microphonist because I love being behind the mic, it is my happy place.” She said. When people live in their truth, life becomes that much easier and clearer. It becomes easier to go after the things that you wouldn’t normally go after, and that in itself creates greater opportunities. Ms Mocumi joined the industry officially in 2006 as an intern at Sheila Afari PR for her graduating programme and never looked back. She went on to work at DJ Sbu’s MassivMetro, she is now working with Music Xpress radio. Her favourite Job out of all of them is the one that includes holding a mic on her hand, whether it’s MCing, speaking, singing, or doing radio. “As long as I’m using a mic I’m happy.” She said. We asked her how she had grown from her experiences and this is what she had to say, “yoh! I have grown substantially, I have learnt so much, I could go on and on but the media industry has made me who I am today and every day is a new day to grow for me.”

7

With growth, comes challenges and people in the public eye are always faced with the public’s opinions, some of which are negative. Ms Mocumi says the people around her love her, they love her work and it boils down to whether or not she loves what she does. If she does, it will show and it will be well received. This socialite has plans to open her own PR Company and musically, she wants to heal people, she plans to make timeless music that people will relate to. “I want to fill up huge venues because people want a portion of the healing. I want people to enjoy spending their money and not regret attending an event I am MCing at, singing at or speaking at.” She said.

“…I love being behind the mic. That is my happy place.” If Mocumi wasn’t in the media industry, she would be a child psychologist because she has a passion for children. She believes that we need more black psychologists to help the black children because sometimes it’s difficult to express yourself in a language that’s not your own. She would like to help black children in a language they understand.

8

“…Musically, I want to heal people.” At the end of our interview with Thato Mocumi, we asked her what she would say to young women who have potential but don’t know to get to where they want to be, this was her response. “Well. I would say do what you love the way you love to. We listen too much to the world and forget what we want and who we are. Let us just be us and do us. Believe in yourself and stop asking for validation elsewhere, God has given us the authority to speak things into existence, we need to believe that we can!!” Everyone has a purpose in life and in order for us to birth those purposes into life we need to look within ourselves for strength, courage and validation. It was once said that your biggest enemy is yourself. Get up and chase your dreams, Ms. Mocumi is doing it, so can you. By: P.Mlambo

AUZWEKE #Ask_IGirls

HAS MARRIAGE LOST ITS MEANING… Every little girl has dreamt about their big day, their wedding day. Almost every little girl has imagined themselves in a big white Cinderella type of dress or mermaid sparkling dress, fairy lights all around, a cute tiara with plenty diamonds, a long veil and saying “I do” to their Prince charming.

12

But how many have prepared themselves for marriage? How many women have prepared themselves that “Prince Charming” might actually turn out to be not so perfect? Many women are prepared for their wedding, but how many have been actually prepared for marriage? Waking up to smelly morning breath, picking up socks all over the house, having to prepare every meal with love and of course have to perform wifely duties in the bedroom even when you don’t feel like it. It is said that a lot of young women these days don’t want to get married. I for one also believe that marriage is overrated. Marriage back then was considered as some form of achievement. You were considered an embarrassment when all your peers were getting married and you weren’t. But our mother’s stayed in loveless marriages all because they didn’t want to be labeled as “failures”. They endured abuse in all forms, stayed with cheating men who would spend their income on alcohol and women, even endured hatred from their in-laws all for the sake of staying married. All for the sake of trying to raise their children in “stable” homes. Maybe it is because of the rules one is given on their wedding days, from their own families and in-laws. A woman is told how she must remain in the marriage no matter how rough things get, “Mosadi o tshwara thipa ka bohaleng” translated: “A woman holds the knife by its sharpest end”. A woman is told that she must never

tell anyone about the problems she faces in her marriage, and if it gets too tough, her in-laws are the only people she’s allowed to run to. In the midst of all of that, her duties are to ensure that her husband is clean, fed, well groomed, sexually satisfied and must give him children. But women these days are too independent, and that’s why less and less females are interested in getting married. We don’t need men to assert us or confirm our femininity. We can be mother’s, business women and home owners without the help of male counterparts. Marriage is not an achievement or the epitome of a successful life, that we know, but rather a blessing. Just a blessing. So when you do get blessed with partner who is willing to marry you, go into the union with clear intentions and a pure heart. Know who you are before attempting to learn about another person, love yourself before attempting to love another person, enough to know when you’re not receiving the love you deserve, enough to leave the table when love is no longer being served. Marriage is a beautiful journey and it is not a joke. It is something both parties need to work hard at and be tremendously proud of. If you want it to last a lifetime, you need to treat it accordingly. By Phindile Sibiya

45 Auzweke! Mjojo Livity

By T Dhlamini

45 is one of the names it is known by in tsotsi taal. The penis is the quintessential representative of all things male and associated. The power, vitality, identity and virility that are linked to the penis are what have been engendered in most of the world’s societies who are paternal in nature. The Mediterranean ancients celebrated and enthused over the penis as a male symbol with artistic sculptings’ and paintings depicting men and the male genital area. Whilst in an African context this power and prowess was hinted at more than depicted, creating a high order of secrecy around the genital area and the related issues around masculinity and manhood. The two over millennia have become intricately intertwined that we pass one for the other and vice versa. In South Africa, with our tradition across many societal groups, of circumcision at the mountain being practiced and botched, it is my efforts to shine some light- not in manhood, but rather in the scientific function of the highly revered and much praised penis. The penis as a member of an elite class of complexity called the body holds its own welter weight title in the punch it packs and the speed it carries. It is the only organ in the male body that is able to alter its shape, size and constitution in nanoseconds. Bringing to mind the Dpt. of Health’s “Zing” advert during their clinical male circumcision campaign. And just as the advert intones, there are many upgrades that come with taking care of your penile health, least of all is the mutual enjoyment for you and your partner during sexual intercourse. Penile health has very little to do with sexual exploits and many a male slut or more politically correct, a playa, might find themselves challenged for their risky sexual behaviours which masks their immaturity and bolsters it as some sign of knowing how to take care of their third leg and alter-ego. Penile health dictates a restriction of sexual exploits to keeping these to the safe quarters of monogamous relationships or sexually responsible ones that will not have you singing along to Chris Brown’s: “Put your panty to the side and let me make you feel alright”. So, if reckless and irresponsible sexual behaviour has no

14

play or place in penile health, what does?

#1: Circumcision Starting from two paragraphs ago’s thought pattern, the truth is that circumcised penises have less bacterial ecology versus their hooded counterparts. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention theorises that this reduction in bacterial variants in the ecology of a circumcised penis may lend to the reduction of risk of contracting HIV when compared to their counterparts with foreskin. HIV is real and the use of PASSOP and/or ABC still applies whether you are circumcised or not.

#2: Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Allow me to start where I left off: a healthy lifestyle includes a responsible and accountable sexual lifestyle. Besides this basic, should you be over 26 years of age and are already sexually active, getting an HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccine is recommended. This will assist in preventing genital warts, which may cause penile cancer among other complications if not attended to. Practise good hygiene, especially if you are uncircumcised. Ensure that you regularly clean beneath your foreskin with soap and water. Become aware and careful to return your foreskin to its normal position after sex. Lack of TLC of your foreskin may complicate and cause a condition known as Phimosis, where the foreskin can’t be retracted from the penis head, causing painful urination and erections. If you are still puffing as you read this, stop and do whatever it takes to get assistance to stop your smoking! Other than contributing to a higher probability of you developing cancer, tobacco narrows blood vessels, reducing blood flow, which decreases the supply of oxygen and therefore promoting inflammation to every organ in your body- including the penis. And while we speak to the smokers, let us address the alcohol mongers, whether an occasion abuser of alcohol or a regular weekend bender, please stop. Alcohol as a substance reduces the body’s ability to create testosterone. The only place in reality that Beyoncé’s Drunken Love song plays out is if you are anxious about your upcoming sexual encounter, therefore the negative effects of alcohol are temporarily supressed by the inhibitions of your mental anxiety. Then again, if you are sexually responsible, there would be no need to enter into anxious sexual liaisons every weekend or often (Just saying!). Do consume alcohol, however small quantities infrequently are just what your penis ordered. For the hustlers working 24/7 with sleep being a luxury, sleep is not, if you’re interested in a healthy penis. Sleep constitutes part of a healthy lifestyle choice for a healthy penis. Be sure to get plenty of it. A penis needs to be used regularly to maintain the health of its tissue, and your body has tasked the brain to carry out maintenance and replenishment function during your REM (deep dream) sleep.

No, not just your language, but yourself. Your emotions and environment needs to be kept at optimum as much as possible. Developing and maintaining healthy emotional relationships is key to the optimum function of the penis. Some of the problems that lead to ED (erectile dysfunction) are head based. This can have as great an impact as problems with your physical health. And as humans, all systems are linked, so when you are stressed or experiencing emotional discomfort or depression, you are likely to suffer from erectile issues, prolonged experiences of these adverse emotional experiences may permanently foster an ED condition which may

What we aptly call ‘Wet dreams’ have less to do with the hot babe from the Taxi rank but more with your body doing routine maintenance to ensure that the penis does not lose elasticity and therefore reduce in size. This reduction is real as it can be as much as 2 centimetres. And lastly, make yearly visits to an Urologist or Clinic, especially when you hit your 40’s, just to ensure that all is still in order and in great working condition.

not stem from physical body function. Stress releases the hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline narrows blood vessels, which negatively impacts erection, whilst excessive cortisol secretion causes the accumulation of belly fat, as cortisol is a driver for appetite. As mentioned above, belly fat has a negative impact on your penile function and health.

#3: Do E Well: Eat and Exercise

#5: Keep Sexually Active

Ensuring that you keep a healthy diet and exercise routine is good for your body and what is good for your body, is great for your penis. A healthy and well balanced diet and exercise plan ensures that weight gain which may lead to obesity is negated. Obesity steals away your masculine abilities by reducing the testosterone levels in the body. As if the reduced production of testosterone was not adequately distressing, abdominal fat converts the male hormone testosterone to the female hormone estrogen. The fatty plaque deposits further clog up blood vessels; this includes the artery to the penis. This makes it very difficult to obtain and maintain good quality erections. Good nutrition will not only keep the penis functioning, but has the added health benefit of keeping you away from chronic conditions such as Diabetes. A robust exercise plan ensures that you get more effect from your diet choices and assists in creating more energy, flexibility and overall healthy body and mind connection. Kegel exercises for your pelvic floor muscles is essential as these are the muscles responsible for moving the penis from flaccid to erect and once erect and fully aroused, to ejaculation.

Yes I said it! The lady in your life might not like me for having said it, but you need to keep the penis in regular use to maintain its virility. And I see the lone ranger brother, don’t fear for the trusty right hand assistance is always near to assist. Remember, this is something that needs to be regular not obsessive. Regular as is healthy within your lifestyle confines. It is no excuse to be going out of your chosen life’s confines to be regular. And ladies if he doesn’t know what regular is, don’t bother looking it up in the dictionary, just refer him back to #2 and let the brain take over. Penile health is important as lack of it has dire consequences that affect the functioning of body and psyche in the man. It is important therefore to educate yourself about the functions of this great muscular tissue and to be a custodian that respects and honors the penis and its genital organs for its multifunctionality and defiance of gravity. And no matter what the concern, nothing is too small or embarrassing for you not to be able to address it with your health professional.

#4: Mind yourself

45 gun salute!

Keep it clean, keep it healthy and keep it up:

How to repel insects naturally #2: Catnip

By T Dhlamini Nothing exists in our ecosystem that has no benefit. However there are some eco agents that are bothersome and an irritant, even to a tree hugger like myself. There are insects that truly don’t know their place and can never distinguish boundaries, and they insist and persist to thrive where we least need or want them. In the summer seasons, mosquitoes try their utmost to become my best friends, and they never take the subtle or the pointed no. They become like an obsessed stalker that invades every waking thought and pushes you to the boundaries of insanity. Summer being behind, I thought my two pet peeves were well behind me – mosquitoes and flies, however, I have had the discomfort of having to deal with ants that have not receded with the winter months setting in. When I checked around friends and relatives, they seemed to be having the same problems I was, with unwanted visitors still scouring their homes and becoming worse than informal settlements to the government, for they, unlike their human counterparts, are not going anywhere and it would seem unlikely that calling the red ants would assist in getting a message to them. Wait… Fear not, Auzweke’s How to has come to the rescue-for now and in the upcoming warmer seasons. You can even keep a copy for uGogo, as I have found some natural repellents for her old nemesis- iphela (cockroach). This may come as a surprise to many, that nature has naturally ocuring repellents, which are far better for you, your family, your pets and the environment. Having said this, it may mean coercing that neglected uncle who is amazing when it comes to gardening to come to your aid, but the benefits are far beyond getting rid of irritating, destructive and disease carrying insects- it might just inspire gourmet meals. In the order of this season’s pest to the pests that occur outside this season, I give you our natural insect repellent list:

#1: Bay Leaf

Catnip is a multipurpose insect repellent that is better on your sinus and allergies than any store bought product. This plant repels cockroaches very well and can be used as a rub on for your skin over the summer months where mosquitoes try to become your best friend.

#3: Tansy

Tansy like Catnip is a highly efficient natural insect repellent for flying and crawling insects alike. It too is a flowering herb that repels flies, roaches, bedbugs, mites, ants and moths. This plant’s oils can be bought at discerning health and pharmaceutical stores and its pure oil diluted with water can serve as a great repellent on your skin.

#4: Mint

Great for not only the Xtra Strong Soccer chant, mint is a magic wand herbal plant that crosses the medicinal, cosmetic, nutritive boundaries to serve as an insect repellent for biting and flying bugs. The smell of its crushed leaves screams: “Get outta here!” to these insects. Mint spreads aggressively so it’s best grown in pots unless you want it to take over your yard.

Known for its aromatic and tenderising effects in gourmet circles, especially in chicken dishes, Bay Leaf is a great and efficient natural repellent. This plant is useful for repelling roaches, moths in our clothes and mosquitoes. Having this beautiful plant; will give a strong fragrance in your home whilst doubling as medicine and repellent.

#5: Lavender Bay Leaf Plant

16

Oh my, is all I can ever say about the transcendent smells of this plant. Known for its soothing and calming properties, young mothers who have finicky babies swear and live by it, using it to induce natural sleep and less agitation in their children. It is featured in most cosmetic lotions

and creams, in bath salts and beauty products. Planting lavender around your home and garden repels insects big and small, whilst giving an unending supply of great smells for your outdoor summer evening hiatus when the heat is suppressive in the house. Lavender is among the plants that act as natural insect repellents.

#6:Citronella

Available as candles and as an essential oil in most stores and pharmacies, citronella is a great multi insect repellent. Mostly advertised and marked as a mosquito repellent, this lemon grass plant actually exudes a wonderful citrus smell which humans enjoy and insects dash away from. It can be used both in and out doors. And unlike the other herb plants, you can give the uncle a break and purchase the easily available store version for your need.

(Photo: Google images)

Moving away from our herb plants that are effective natural repellents among other uses, we look at other means of repelling insects out of our homes and away from our bodies. The above plants are not the exhausted list of helpful herb plants that are great repellents, if you are looking for a more comprehensive list, please hit us up on our Facebook page and tag us #Howto and we will be sure to attend to your query.

#7: Citrus Peels Technically not a herb or plant but not straying too far away from food items are citrus peels. These are handy for keeping away insects, by cutting the peels of citrus fruit and rubbing these against areas where insects travel, windowsills, along doorways, it assists in keeping away insects such as ants. By strategically placing the peels in sunken areas where insects may crawl inside, in particular spiders, it helps you deter these insects from these areas. All this, whilst giving your home a fresh and zesty smell.

Citrus Peels

#8: Baby Powder Whilst I will be the first to admit that Baby Powder is not natural, I fully support its inclusion in this list, as it is not as harmful as the alternate chemical insect repellent and for those who have respiratory tract problems, is not harmful at all. By lightly sprinkling baby powder along the inside of your doorways and windowsills, as well as around room corners, you are able to keep out ants, wasps, bees and mosquitoes.

#9: Scented Toiletries Whilst we are on a cosmetic run with baby powder, the avoidance of scented toiletries- especially those fruity ones is a great insect repellent. This is a preventative strategy, especially over summer, where a large variation of insect life is drawn to fruit and flowers. Our understanding of this natural urge and not serving ourselves to insects by confusing them because we smell like fruit is a great way to keep insects away from us. As an alternative utilise non scented toiletries and if you really need to be smelling something, opt for one of the herb plants, favouring citrus ones.

#10: Cedar Blocks/Shavings Cedar blocks or shavings are great insect repellents, especially of the creeping and crawling kind. If you are not blessed to have access to Cedar trees, Cedar Blocks and shavings are available commercially for purchase. Putting a few of these in just the right corners and places can assist you in avoiding bed bugs, moths and mosquitoes to mention a few.

#11: Keep it Clean As the saying goes; keeping the best for last, yep this is another one of those preventative repellent methods. Keeping our homes and yards clean truly reduces the amount of insect issues and problems we may experience. It also makes it harder for insect to complete life cycles and easier for us to attend to any pests and get rid of the insect problem before it gets out of hand. Remember all those times Gogo and maybe uMama kept going on about removing all the low lying apricots or peaches? Or how about closing the dustbin or getting the dustbin out? Yep, this was their way of making sure that the ant colony doesn’t recruit the fly colony to come to war over your place of rest and shade. Keeping it clean, tidy and clear- inside and outside truly makes a big difference. That is how to repel insects naturally in your home front. Ensuring that you serve the environment by not emitting chemicals to deal with the problem and ofcourse ensuring that respiratory tract sensitive people like myself and young children can enjoy the surroundings with you. AUZWEKE Feature Cover Story

YOUNG WITS BASKET

A WITS female basketball player Ipeleng Nyatlo (19) is one of South Africa’s leading women basketball players who has once represented the country at a BWB (Basketball without borders) camp held in Canada in 2016 and also holds in her possession over 2 trophies and 6 medal all acclaimed in her overall basketball career which started in 2011 at a middle school named Matale Middle School based in Phokeng (Rustenburg NW) where she was also born and raised. The young basketball sensation was born in 1999 April 18 and only has one older male sibling who is 26 years of age – who surprisingly isn’t much interested in his little sister’s basketball wagon and only focuses much on his own DJ career. Ipeleng went to preschool for 2 years and then to Sarone Primary school in Phokeng. She then finished her primary career and moved to Matale middle school where she was doing athletics for a season and then tried out basketball just to keep fit until she had to choose between the two and then decided to make basketball her official sport. At Grade 11 (2015) she played for the national team’s under 16. Years prior she had trialled for the under 20’s national team, she says that she saw herself as good enough to play for the

18

senior national team, even though she was only 15 years old. She added that the same year was fun and challenging, “I remember there some exams that I missed, and I literally missed a lot of school, I did not go for like… A total of the days I missed for school were almost for like a month.” The reason also being the tournament in Botswana, of which before the tournament, her team had to go for preparations in Joburg for about two weeks then heading to Botswana. She also added that she could catch up with her school work because they came back to school three weeks before the exams. From her high school years at Mangope Tech where Ipeleng got herself MVP at a junior WNBA (Women National Basketball Association) programme championship. She recalled a few of her team mates who were Refilwe Mogomotsi, Boitumelo Sepotokele. The reserved young, vibrant star with a charming broken fore tooth spent the whole of her high school career without a friend to really call a friend – is now studying in Witswatersrand University in Braamfontein – she is looking forward to completing her Accounting Science honours in four years.

TBALL SENSATIONAL A onetime MVP, and a multiple time super star admits that the first time she played for Wits was hectic, because of the next level game play - in terms of the physicality and pressure. “Then you get here and find 3 people who play for the national team and then you kinda have to adjust to their style of play without having to compromise your own game.” She added. In the last year alone (2017) Ipeleng has played 2 leagues with Wits University which are ICSL where they came out second, and GUBL (Gauteng Universities Basketball League). They also won against Vaal Universities at the USSAs last year July, at Stellenbosch University.

Wits also held a tournament which she missed because she was invited to play a national invitational team against the team from the USA – Virginia Common Wealth University while the University was on its own tour and requested to play against SAs national team. Miss Nyatlo sees herself as blessed and is also looking forward to finishing her education and actually becoming a CA, as well as being a professional basketball player. “I wanna be umm, go on the corporate world so… I do consider playing professional basketball, I wanna have that – and something related to the investment I put in my academics”

Ford Fiesta 1 Automatic (2 The new Ford Fiesta has finally made it to South Africa – not only does it look more attractive, but its interior represents a significant improvement over that of its predecessor. We recently tested the range-topping 1.0T Titanium automatic derivative to find out if this new Fiesta lives up to the hype... and whether you should consider buying it.

The Fiesta is a (B-segment) compact hatchback that has proven popular with buyers in South Africa over the years and the latest version, with its larger dimensions and refined styling, aims to shake up the segment where it competes with notable rivals such as the new Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio, Mazda2, Opel Corsa, Kia Rio, Hyundai i20, to name but a few.

We Like: Styling, SYNC3 infotainment, lots of standard features, ride and handling, warranty and service plan, good overall value

While it still rides on the proven, but now stiffer, chassis of the previous generation, Ford has gone to great lengths to enhance the Fiesta’s fun-factor while also improving refinement, in-car technology and safety.

We Don’t Like: Disappointing transmission, rear passenger space and practicality could be better, middle-of-the-road interior quality

Alternatives The archrival: Consider the Volkswagen Polo 1.0TSI Highline automatic, priced at R302 200. The new Polo is an excellent product and this derivative offers 85 kW and 200 Nm from its turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine. However, it’s not as generously specced as the Fiesta and its warranty and service plan are not as comprehensive either. Tick optional extras carefully. French value: For R40 700 less, you can hop into the Renault Clio 88 kW Turbo GT-Line priced at R269 900, which offers 88 kW and 205 Nm of torque from its 1.2-litre turbopetrol engine. It too comes generously specced with most of the features offered in the Fiesta. If your budget can’t stretch beyond R300k (but you still want good value for money), then the Clio is a worth a look. Japanese class: Consider the Mazda2 1.5 Individual Plus auto priced from R292 000. It lacks the outright punch offered by its turbocharged rivals, but outputs are still decent at 82 kW and 145 Nm developed by its naturally-aspirated engine. The Mazda’s cabin is both modern and well-built with a generous amount of standard specification including leather seats, which makes it a good value proposition. However, its load bay is smaller than the Fiesta’s (280 litres).

What is it? 20

On test here is the range-topping Fiesta 1.0 Titanium automatic in metallic Blue Wave body colour and this derivative comes equipped with features such as automatic elongated headlights with LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport4 rubber and a wide grille that’s finished in chrome to differentiate it from its lesser derivatives. This Fiesta is, in our opinion, the neatest-looking Fiesta to date... How does it fare in terms of…

Performance and refinement? While the Fiesta’s overall performance is adequate, it lacks fizz in automatic guise. In automatic guise, the Fiesta 1.0T Titanium’s 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbopetrol engine delivers 74 kW and 170 Nm of torque (the manual Fiesta Titanium offers peak power of 92 kW). It’s front-wheel-driven and makes use of a new 6-speed automatic transmission. While the Fiesta is refined and delivers adequate performance, its quirks come to the fore when you drive it more spiritedly. We found the Ford performed best when driven with a measured approach, as the engine becomes noticeably strained when driven with more fervour. The throttle pedal is very responsive – but perhaps too responsive – because the 1.0T Titanium has a tendency to lurch if you don’t apply smooth inputs.

1.0T Titanium 2018) Review

The automatic transmission was not as smooth or as responsive as we would have hoped. Many will enjoy the convenience of the automatic transmission, but its shifts were not as smooth and seamless as we had hoped. In fact, when in sports mode, it didn’t feel entirely sure which gear it wanted to be in. There are steering wheel paddles, with which can use to manually shift gears, but because the transmission is quite slow to respond to inputs, it was simply better to let the transmission change gears on its own.

In terms of shove, the Fiesta has enough to comfortably execute quicker overtaking manoeuvres and it accelerates to the highway speed limit with very little fuss. For the most part then, the Fiesta automatic offers average performance, but it’s not as fun to drive as we expected it would be. The Fiesta has an encouraging claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.2 L/100 km, but it proved to be much thirstier during our test with a real-world average of 9.2 L/100 km, a figure that we could probably improve upon with more effort. 21

Ride and handling? The Fiesta offers entertaining handling ability and its ride quality is excellent. The Fiesta positively shines in terms of ride and handling, however! It remains admirably composed on the road and delivers an excellent ride quality that is both comfortable/forgiving on varying surfaces without ever feeling floaty or ponderous. What’s more, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) has improved significantly: the cabin is noticeably quieter while driving, something that both the driver and passengers will appreciate.

test. Taller adults will, therefore, struggle to get comfortable in the back, but it must be added the seats are reasonably soft and supportive. In terms of in-car storage space, the new Fiesta now has an enlarged glovebox, as well as a 1.0-litre central storage bin that doubles up as an armrest for the driver, which is very nice. The door mouldings have space for small bottles and there is a pair of drinks holders for the driver and front passenger. There’s also ample space ahead of the gear lever to store your phone and other oddments.

Interior and features?

The Fiesta’s handling is a major highlight. With its stiffer chassis, planted underpinnings, sporty tyres and well-weighted and communicative steering, the Ford can be committed to corners with confidence. It feels agile and exhibits impressive front-end grip as it bites into a corner. In fact, Ford says that cornering grip has increased by 10% in this new Fiesta. In terms of handling then, the Fiesta delivers on its fun-to-drive promise...

Practicality? This Fiesta is packed with standard features and the 8-inch Sync3 infotainment system is a highlight.

Taller passengers will find rear leg- and headroom to be a bit of a squeeze. The Fiesta is average in terms of practicality. Its luggage bay has a claimed capacity of 303 litres, is wider than before and reasonably deep, with the 60:40 split rear seatback offering flexibility when you need to haul bulkier items. With the rear seats folded down, there is 984 litres of utility space. Ford says that rear passengers are afforded 16 mm more knee room, but we found it to be quite tight when we conducted the standard sit-behind-yourself 22

The interior design of the Fiesta is a significant improvement over the previous version and it will appeal to youthful buyers especially. The multi-function steering wheel is well-sized and wrapped in plush leather and the column is adjustable for rake as well as reach. However, elsewhere, the interior offers a mixed bag of materials of varying tactile quality and although the build quality is generally good, it’s not class-leading. As a result, the Fiesta’s interior is middling. It’s not cutprice in any way, but it’s not all-out premium either and we don’t think it will age particularly well. Nonetheless, this Fiesta’s value proposition is significantly strengthened when you delve into its extensive standard features list, which is notably generous. It comes crammed with standard features such as an easy to read (and use) “floating” 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with SYNC3, Bluetooth, voice control, navigation and App Connect. There’s also 2 USB ports, cruise control, climate control air conditioning, rear park distance control and heated seats. It’s also worth noting that automatic headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers are standard on the Fiesta.

However, although it does a lot well, it’s not a perfect package. The somewhat erratic-shifting automatic transmission is perhaps the 1.0T Titanium’s most disappointing feature and we feel that it ultimately detracts from the fun-to-drive, dynamic aspect of the Fiesta. After all, what’s the point of providing excellent handling when the transmission can’t adequately exploit the engine’s potential? For this reason, we can only hope that the manual Fiesta will be more entertaining to drive and we look forward to testing it soon... Interior quality is a mixed bag and we found the instrument cluster to be a bit bland-looking in this range-topping Fiesta. Safety specification is comprehensive too and a total of 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control, hill launch assist and ISOFIX child seat mounts are standard. If it’s ultimate value for money you seek, then the Fiesta makes a strong case for itself. Pricing and Warranty The Ford Fiesta 1.0T Titanium automatic is priced at R310 600 and is sold with a 4-year/120 000 km warranty and a 4-year/60 000 km service plan.

Verdict

https://www.cars.co.za/motoring_news/ford-fiesta-10t-titanium-automatic-2018-review/45216/ Review fro Cars.co.za The Fiesta automatic has its flaws, but it still offers good value if you can afford its price tag. There is much to like about this new Fiesta, which is arguably the strongest rival to the top-selling Volkswagen Polo. Not only does it look good in the metal, we anticipate many buyers will find its “all-inclusive standard features list” difficult to resist. We found the newcomer’s handling ability and ride quality particularly impressive; the Blue Oval’s compact hatchback will adequately serve as a stylish and relatively practical daily runabout. 23

Maritzburg College, in the KZN region, is ranked the highest in South Africa School sports hockey. Amongst those produced from the boys institution is S/A’s Men hockey versatile star player Tyson Dlungwana, who recently took time to chat with Auzweke’s, Gift Tlou. Born and bred and in Pietermaritzburg, Tyson, attended two boys’ schools in Merchiston prep School and Maritzburg College. The 21 year old, took part in different sporting codes growing up. “I would’ve been a decent striker, I used to play football”, he recollects. It was only until grade six when “Ty” as his affectively known in hockey, started focusing on hockey solely as he possessed great skill and power with the stick in his hand. The right back went on to make the S/A professional team, Maritzburg united at age group, where his dreams of becoming a hockey star slowly became a reality. “It was in high school that I started taking it a bit more serious, I realised there’s a lot at stake rather than just playing for fun”. “What I liked the most about hockey, is that it’s a fast paced sport, it requires a lot of physical energy and that’s a skill a lot of people don’t have”, he says. Although he started representing S/A at school level, Tyson never neglected his studies. As he managed to juggle both academics and sports, completing his matric in record time, in the year of 2015. The following year saw Ty, travel to the big city of Johannesburg, where he enrolled at the University of Johannesburg, to study teaching. A career he always dreamt of besides sports, inspired by his drama teacher, Mr Barbour. In a bid to get an overseas move and focus on hockey, Tyson decided to put his studies on hold at the beginning of this year. “Yes, I only did two years of my teaching degree, then I decided to stop this year, but it’s something I’ll continue with later on”. “Doing both and still keep a social life was task and very demanding”, he explains. The Durban born player currently, turns out for Old Albanian, when he’s not on duty with the national team,

where they compete in the Northern blues league. “I’m still new in the team, we’re busy with the playoffs at the moment, there are eight teams with a home and away fixture, and we’ll see how it turns out”. “Tuks are the dominating team as their squad consists of many players who just won the Varsity cup tournament with the university”, he states.

PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Hockey is not popular or well recognise as other sporting codes in the country, which shatters the dreams of thousands hockey hopeful kids around the country. A number of high schools are willing to integrate hockey but the resources and infrastructure remain the main stumbling block which has led to the sport developing at a slow rate. With no hockey Astros for young stars to nature their talent and transition into professional stars. “You can’t compare the hockey league to the super rugby or the PSL, no, but in terms of player quality we’re not far behind”, he clarifies. “We have players that can match your top hockey players playing in the Netherlands or Belgium, those are your top countries, and we just don’t have the structure”. Another thing is that we’ve got people who just play hockey as a hobby, people who are working in other fields, they just play part time, I feel like that decreases the quality, having people who are not training at a high intensity ”, he says. Despite such challenges in hockey, Tyson has managed to build a name for himself, with a persona sponsorship, Zudo Hockey, from Australia. “It’s a cool brand, I’ve been with them for eight years now, they provide me with my annual specs, bag packs and a few clothing items”.

SA NATIONAL TEAM With Tyson featuring for the junior national side at high school level. Tyson has maintained his form catching the attention of, S/A senior team hockey selectors. The former Uj student got his first call up for the national outfit in 2016, during his first year in varsity.” I remember, it was a big moment we were competing in the summer series, out in Cape Town, I didn’t get to play in the first two games I was on the stands but I was given a run in the third game against Germany, I was tasked to mark a guy by the name of Christopher, he was the best junior player at the recent concluded world cup at the time”. “It was a grilling experience, an unforgettable one, I only touched the ball twice and unfortunately we lost the game 6-0”, he reminisces. The year 2016 was remarkable one for the hockey sensation, making the under 21 squad that competed in the Africa cup, held in Namibia where S/A finished as the runners up. Followed by his debut for the Golden Gladiators, to top it all playing in the junior world cup. “Yes, that was a good year, I also won the varsity hockey cup with the university of Johannesburg”, he adds. With such a hectic schedule it’s no surprise that Tyson, decided to put his studies on break. His heroics saw him help the

senior men team win gold at the Africa cup, in Egypt 2017. Which grants them a spot at this year’s hockey world cup, scheduled for November. Tyson’s, performance on the Astro has seen him feature regular for the senior team, as they also took part in this year’s common wealth games in Australia. However, Ty remains humble and true to himself, “Yes, being with the national team is great but I still have to work in order to get selected for the world cup”.

LOOKING AHEAD Aged 21, Tyson has proved himself to be a force with a hockey in his hands. “I’m really grateful to the coaches, I’ve worked with so far in my career, starting from school level up to where I am today”, he says. The declining standard of hockey in the country has led him to search for greener pastures abroad. “At the moment I can’t say anything but there is a team, I’m in negotiations with in Belgium”, he reveals. “I’d like say people, the youth should give hockey a chance, come learn and see what it’s about, hockey is an interesting sports and I also hope the viewership expands”.
